Post Cold War Dbq Essay
Following WWII and during the Cold War, there was a sense of instability in Europe. To counteract
this, many nations believed that a united Europe could suppress the intense nationalism and militarism
that lead to both world wars. Other nations reacted with advocacy, protest or were simply equivocal.
Post WWII Europe was extremely chaotic and disjointed. Alliances had been made and broken during
the world wars, so tensions were at an all time high throughout the continent. Germany was split into
zones of occupation and the Cold War was brewing. For these reasons and many more, certain
officials wanted to create a better sense of unity in Europe. In 1957, with the Treaty of Rome, the
European Economic Committee (EEC) was formed. Officials ... Show more content on

Britain in the years after 1950 was especially concerned at what joining the EEC would bring. The
British finance minister Harold Macmillan worried that by joining they would damage their internal
commerce system even if they were gaining new outside trading opportunities (Document 7). As
finance minister, he was likely thinking purely money and not acknowledging the other factors
associated with unification. The EEC did not seem to be the perfect fit but staying out of it would put
out the impression of isolation. Britain wanted a way of associating with this initiative in Europe in
such a way as to benefit us all . Those in Britain did not appear to make a concrete decision; over 30
years after Macmillan issued his statement Margaret Thatcher voiced a similar opinion. In 1988,
England had joined the EEC 15 years earlier but there were still topics of unanimity England was
unsure about. In this case, Thatcher was concerned that the Single European Act which seeked a single
currency and market would take away the uniqueness of each individual country. Thatcher believed
that Europe would benefit from being more united and with a greater sense of common purpose, but it
must be in a way which preserves the different traditions, parliamentary powers, and a sense of pride
in one s culture (Document

I Hear The Cry Of My Life
I hear the cry. Of course it is four thirty in the morning and my little boy is ready for his middle of the
night feeding. This is the everyday life of a mother of two. I wrap my bundle of joy up and feed him.
While this usually isn t a normal time for people to think about their hopes and dreams it tends to be
mine. At the age of sixteen, I moved with my husband to Norman and realized that the best
opportunities for my family s future would be to pursue a professional degree. My college experience
began the summer after I graduated a year early from high school. This definitely left me clueless at
answering the dreaded question, What are you going to do for the rest of your life? But the one thing I
had set in stone was being in the medical field. After picking the wrong major over and over, I felt
passionate and committed to follow a career in medical imaging.
When I think about a sonographer s job the first thing that comes to mind is a computer. Recently, I
had multiple ultrasounds during my second pregnancy. Every time I stepped into the perinatal center I
got excited. While I was thrilled to see my little boy swimming around I couldn t help but be excited
to see the ultrasound preformed. When we were let back into the room I couldn t resist trying to read
all the buttons on the computer and try to figure out how to work the machine. In high school, I joined
the bot ball team. Botball is a program that engages middle and high school students in a team

The Pros And Cons Of Planned Parenthood
V) Planned Parenthood
To reiterate how important symbol creation and media framing are to modern scandals, look no further
than the allegations brought on family planning organization Planned Parenthood in 2015. In many
ways, the scandals themselves were nearly identical in composition. David Daleiden, a journalist and
founder of the pro life group the Center for Medical Progress, accumulated undercover footage at
eleven Planned Parenthood offices claiming to be a representative for a fetal tissue procurement
business. In the footage, abortion clinic doctors and executives [admit] that their fetal tissue
procurement agreements are profitable for clinics and help keep their bottom line healthy. A report
from the Center for Medical Progress goes into detail about Planned Parenthood works with
StemExpress, LLC, and several other companies which supposedly profit off of fetal tissue.
In fact, though the Center for Medical Progress does not seem to be affiliated with any larger
organization like biggovernment.com was with Breitbart, there is a relatively noticeable attention to
academic detail in his approach to investigative journalism. The report previously mentioned has full
citations (most of them are either references to small, conservative news sites or citations from their
own website) and there is a portion of centerformedicalprogress.org entirely dedicated to archived
documents taken from Planned Parenthood chapters, including fetus tissue invoices and pricing

The Sinking Of The RMS Titanic
In 1912, the RMS Titanic was the largest passenger ship in the world. It was also the most talked
about ship. Everyone spoke of the ship as being one of the strongest ships in the world as well as the
biggest. The sinking of the RMS Titanic was one of, if not the most tragic accident of an ocean liner in
history due to not just its mass death to almost two thirds of the passengers on board bu also the way it
went down. The Titanic was said to be an unsinkable ship. Everyone that believed the ship was
unsinkable was horribly mistaken. The Titanic sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912.
More than 1,500 people had lost their lives that fateful morning. It was in March 1909 that the Titanic
was being assembled to be the largest and most elegant passenger ship in the world. The ship was built
in the Harland and Wolff yard in Ireland. The lengthy process of ... Show more content on

Unfortunately, there were not enough lifeboats for everyone onboard. There was only enough room for
about a third of them. In 1912, there were not any laws or regulations on needing a seat for everyone
onboard a ship. The passengers with the higher statuses, which were the first and some second class
passengers, were the first ones allowed to board the lifeboats. They also integrated the women and
children rule when it came to boarding the lifeboats. Not everyone could be saved that tragic night.
Cunard s Carpathia heard Titanic s distress signal around midnight and came to the rescue, but they
could not get to Titanic s location quick enough. The Titanic sank below the surface at about 2:20 AM
on April 15, 1912. Along with the ship, about 1,500 passengers went into the ocean with her. There
were not many survivors of those 1,500 people. Most of the dead were third class passengers or those
who were staying below deck for the entrie leg of the journey. All of the survivors in the lifeboats

The following report is a brief comparative analysis of two of Australia s largest deposit taking
financial institutions (FI), Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. (ANZ) and Westpac
Banking Corporation (Westpac). This report seeks to identify which of the FIs has a greater aggregate
return per dollar of equity and thus establish the highest performer, or most profitable, of the two. The
Return on Equity Model (ROE) (Koch amp; MacDonald, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to ROA, ANZ s profitability fell short of Westpac s by 0.146%, with the ROA percentage at
0.95% and 1.096% respectively (Appendix A). The difference in profits is caused by Westpac s
substantially higher total assets, which outweigh ANZ s by $75,740,000. Although ANZ has a greater
level of liquid assets, Westpac s substantially higher loan portfolios generate higher returns. The lower
ROA is caused by ANZ s interest bearing assets under performing, or carrying lower risks leading to
lower yields, or a greater reliance upon non interest bearing assets. ROE is linked to ROA through the
EM.
ANZ s 2011 EM was 15.62x, slightly higher than Westpac s 15.35x, suggesting ANZ s assets are
funded by more debt than Westpac, this combined with lower returns is usually indicative of a low
performing institution (Koch amp; MacDonald, 2010, pg. 122). Further decomposition leads to
analysis of the Expense ratio (ER) and Asset Utilisation (AU).
ANZ s overall ER of 4.99% is relatively lower than Westpac s at 5.36% (Appendix A) supporting the
earlier conclusion that ANZ s lower ROA is caused by lower earning interest bearing assets rather than
an inability to control expenses (Koch amp; MacDonald, 2010, pg. 122). ANZ s lower ER can be
attributed to its considerably lower Interest Expense (IE) percentage, 3.35% compared with Westpac s
4.05% (Appendix A), suggesting that, during

Multiple Sclerosis Report
Worldwide, more than 2.3 million people are currently affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This
condition is a life long, potentially debilitating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) (Pasquier,
2014, 537). Specifically, it is a chronic auto immune disease that attacks the central nervous system.
Furthermore, the person s own immune system does not recognize the neurons and attacks the myelin,
and the nerve fibers it covers and protects. The myelin then creates scar tissue which causes damage
and keeps the nerve impulses in the neuron from being able to travel to the brain or the spinal cord. If
this occurs, bodily functions become difficult or impossible because messages aren t being delivered
to or from the organs back to the CNS. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What patients experience due to this disease are a range of physical and cognitive problems.
According to Bonafede (2013), these symptoms may include difficulty with balance, muscle
coordination, memory, concentration, vision and speech. Moreover, they may come and go or become
progressively worse, which will end up hindering the person s abilities and productivity. Until
recently, the major course of therapy only included the use of steroids, due to their
immunosuppressive qualities; however, now several new compounds have been developed and
approved, in hopes to change the course of the disease (Tavazzi, 2014, 833). Current available
treatments include steroids and Glatiramer acetate, Natalizumab, and Fingolimod. The first,
suppresses the immune system to reduce the inflammatory response, thus avoiding the immune cells
from entering the central nervous system. However, long term use of steroids puts the patient at risk
for infection or hypertension; so, during the use of these drugs one must make into account if the
benefits outweigh the risk. The latter, is a synthetic amino acid polymer resembling myelin basic
protein, delivered via injection (Tavazzi, 2014, 833). To be more specific, it is thought to set the
immune system so as not to attack the myelin, so as to reduce its scarring and damage to the CNS. It
has been shown to be safe and well tolerated. Some

Solemn Soot and Social Despair In the Transformative World...
Solemn Soot and Social Despair
In the Transformative World of William Blake England was changing. The rolling green shires and
inspiring scenery that was fixed in the earliest memories of the Romantic poets was quickly vanishing.
There was a trade off happening. Rivets for rocks, chimney stacks for trees, locomotives for carriages
and steal tracks for cobblestone. Piece by piece England s quaint agricultural backdrop was being
replaced by a stern industrial one. Progress! Some shouted. The greater good! Others exclaimed.
Expansion was becoming virtuous. In droves they came from the country to work in London s
factories. The machines ruled the fields now. Farmers turned their plows in for hammers and the way
peopled lived was never going to be the same.
A new social class was developing in England. It was the working class. And although a wider
segment of the population was producing, creating steam for the Empire, certain leading minds of the
time had to examine the under belly of this fiery beast. In William Blake s poems The Chimney
Sweeper and London he does just that. Through this examination Blake dwells on the theme of the
loss of innocence. He writes these two works in a straight forward tone, almost like a social awareness
pamphlet, urging the reader to wake up. And in typical Romantic fashion he does this through stark
imagery. What impression would a first time reader have after digesting these pieces when first
published? Depending on their class

Witches Influence On Macbeth
Wole Soyinka once said Power is domination, control, and therefore a very selective form of truth
which is a lie . In Shakespeare s play the Tragedy of Macbeth the lead character Macbeth starts as a
humble and good hearted person. Not long after he is influenced by three witches and begins his
ambitious journey to fulfill the prophecy and take the throne.
First of all, Macbeth is directly influenced by the witches when they show him he will become the
king, because this leads him to believe he is entitled to certain power and his thirst for it grows.
Macbeth first encounters the witches early on with his friend Banquo. When Macbeth is with Banquo

Before Macbeth murders King Duncan Lady Macbeth states But screw your courage to the sticking

shows that Lady Macbeth was planting ideas in Macbeth s head. She also basically tells him that if he
doesn t do this he is not a man. However even though she seemed to have influenced him the most this
is not the case. The three witches had the largest influence because they told him their prophecies
which lead to him do things that cause them to come true. Since Macbeth knows no man born of a
woman can harm him he ignores the warning beware Macduff. When confronted by Macduff at his

important because it proves the prophecy is true and Macbeth caused his own death. It also proves

1860 Slavery Essay
The matter of slavery is one that has plagued humanity for the horrors it has committed. Despite the
fact that most Americans look down at the south s shameful past of slavery, it is known that history is
written by the victors, and that we must critically judge the north for the treatment of its workers like
historians have judged the south in order to gain a better understanding of the situation.
By 1860 the manufacturing industry was growing fast, there were approximately 140,000 factories
mostly located in the north with about 1.5 million factory workers. Each worker made a median of 2
real dollars in income per week. As can be seen, 2 dollars isn t much to keep an average family size of
5 persons afloat. Due to this all family members needed to work, including children.Furthermore,
Women were happily employed by factory owners because companies could pay them less. Due to
their size, children were willingly employed to fix arduous places to approach in factory machines. As

equivalent to 75% of all of the year s exports. In the same year 58% of all laborers were farmers and
the south produced 179 million pounds of cotton. This caused farmers to retrieve colossal profits. One
considerable reason farm owners received enormous revenue was through the use of slave labor. In
1840 2,457,355 slaves were in the south. By 1860 the figure had elevated to 3,951,798. Due to the
number of slaves bought and sold by farmers mostly in the south, slaves made up 13% of the United

Stereotypes In Little Women
Little Women, a novel by Louisa May Alcott, tells the story of the March family who live in New
England during the Civil War. Three of the sisters are typical girls for the time period of the nineteenth
century, doing the cooking, cleaning, and other household chores. In contrast, the character of Jo
wants to spend her time writing and being in adventures outside the home. Jo is hardworking, brave,
and she is also a tomboy. Alcott uses Jo to challenge the stereotypes of the nineteenth century. Jo

In the nineteenth century, women were supposed to stay in the home. They were not to be outside
running wild (Radek stereotype). Jo shows more of a masculine personality and one way it is
displayed is through her bravery. Jo seeks adventures especially when she goes outside and plays
Laurie and avoids her domestic responsibilities, which was considered not common in the nineteenth
century. One example of Jo showing her bravery is when Laurie s, Jo s best friend, asks Jo to come
over to his house, to see his library full of books. Laurie claims, that Jo will not come because being a
girl, she would be too afraid to go alone. One of Jo s sisters Meg, tells to Jo that she can not run over
to his house uninvited, walk in and have tea, and she should not be the one to chase after boys (33). In
both situations Jo answers, I am not afraid of anything (31). Jo would always be found outside the
house or alone with Laurie. She is never in the house, cooking, cleaning or helping her mother. This
challenges the stereotypes but also shows how brave Jo is. Jo does not like being in the house; she
would rather do what a nineteenth century man would prefer. Another example of how Jo shows
bravery is when she travels to New York by herself. Jo has lot fortitude and does not have much fear
when she travels because see seeks adventure! This is not typical of women in the nineteenth century.

However, how does the advancement of video games affect our relationships with one another? While
a group of people strongly believe that it is helping bring people together, the addiction, the over
competitiveness mentality, and the frustration that video games generate are, in reality, pushing people
apart.
Video games are addictive. It makes its users forget themselves and their surroundings, including their
loved ones. What makes people addicted to video games is the fact that video games are constantly
rewarding people for every little in game act they do when playing the game. For instance, one gains
virtual currency or skill points for every point, rebounds, blocks, and steals one records in the game
NBA 2K. Another example, one gains money and reputation points every time one finish a mission in
the game Grand Theft Auto. The constant rewards are a type of positive reinforcement that people do
not easily receive in real life and this makes people want to keep playing the games over and over
again: The addition of a stimulus [will] increase the probability that a behavior will be repeated
(Grison 212). In this instance, the addition of a stimulus is the rewards (virtual currency or reputation
points) that video games give to its users and the behavior that is expected to be repeated is the act of
playing that video games. In an article for the video game addiction.org, Meghan Vivo, the Content

By passing the Military Commissions Act of 2006, the person in control of all decisions would be the
President. They also gave the president absolute power to designate enemy combatants, and to set his
own definitions for torture (Military Commissions). If someone were to identify the players who were
deemed responsible for this act to pass, that someone would most likely identify President Bush and
Congress. These central figures wanted to take the extra step in keeping the United States protected
from any additional acts of terrorism. With what is stated in the Military Commissions Act of 2006
and those who stressed for the passage of the act, mixed messages are sent. President Bush, at the
time, believed in less harm and more protection for the United States due to the extenuating

If their people got in their way or tried to slow down their progress, civil war was the first option to

Feminism, itself, is the support or promotion of women right s on the grounds of social, political, and
economic equality to men. More specifically, black feminism is thought to be equity; seeking equal
rights for men and women, as well as, patriarchy which in today s society is considered to be unequal
power between women and men, whereas women are oppressed and systematically disadvantaged.

McMurphy said he lost his clothes during the night time, so he couldn t wear anything on except his
hat and towel. The big nurse got mad at the black boys, because they didn t give him a green uniform.
But it was McMurphy s mischief. He wore the shorts under the towel. When the big nurse saw his

Tay-Sachs Disease Analysis
Tay Sachs disease is an inherited disorder that progressively destroys nerve cells in the brain and
spinal cord. Commonly it becomes apparent in infancy. Infants with this disorder usually appear
normal until ages 3 6 months, when their development slows and muscles used for movement weaken.
Affected infants can t turn over, sit, or crawl. They also get startled easy to loud noises. As the disease
continues they can experience seizures, vision loss, hearing loss, intellectual disability, and even
paralysis. Usually they live into only early childhood. Seizures becomes a problem between ages two

The HEXA gene provides instruction for making part of an enzyme called beta hexosaminidase A,
which plays a very critical role in the brain and spinal cord. This enzyme is found in the lysosomes,
which are the structures in cells that break down toxic substances and their job is that of a recycling
center. Beta hexosaminidase A helps break down a fatty substance called GM2 ganglioside. The
mutations in the HEXA gene disrupt the activity of beta hexosaminidase A, which prevents the
enzyme from breaking down GM2 ganglioside. As a result, this substance accumulates to toxic levels,
particularly in the neutrons in the brain and also the spinal cord. Damage by the buildup of GM2
ganglioside leads to the destruction of the neurons; Causing signs and symptoms of Tay Sachs disease.

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Joan Didion s Santa Ana Winds
People are influenced by everything around them. The people they associate with influence their
decisions, their surroundings impact their mood and behavior, and even weather can affect the
outcome of a person s day. Joan Didion, an American essayist, explains some strange impacts wind
can have on people in her essay Santa Ana Winds. The author teaches teaches about the changes Santa
Anas bring upon people and shows how mechanistic people are. Ms. Didion s point is emphasized
through her vivid diction, diverse syntax, and educated tone. Didion s descriptive diction helps readers
envision effects of the unusual Santa Ana Winds. She says that, we will see smoke back in the
canyons, and hear sirens in the night which effectively brings to mind thoughts of fires caused by the
Santa Ana Winds without having to directly reference them. Later in her essay, she uses small details

uses phrases such as, when I first moved to Los Angeles and [I] was living on an isolated beach. Later
on in her essay she moves into a relating of factual information which appeals to the logos of the
audience and, once again, gives credence to her message. She states that [o]ne cannot get much more
mechanistic than that. By this Didion means that people are unconsciously and uncontrollably
impacted by their surrounds just as machines are controlled. She backs up this claim throughout her
essay with descriptions of how [m]eek little house wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study

The Eruption Of Mount Vesuvius
Introduction
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD was a pyroclastic event discussed in greater detail over the
course of this essay.
Mount Vesuvius is located on the southern coast of Italy, 1,281 metres above the Bay of Naples on the
plain of Campania between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Mount Vesuvius is part
of the Romana volcanic belt which covers about 450km from Mount Amatia, 130km from north west
Rome and 110km from East Naples. The Romana volcanic belt is made up of two parallel volcanic
scars. Mount Vesuvius is on the Western arc. This zone is highly fractured which allows magma to rise
up into the magma chamber beneath Mount Vesuvius. This chamber is thought to be approximately
5km below the volcano and almost 2km high with a diameter of around 1km. The volcano is situated
where two faults in the Earth s crust converge. (De Boer and Sanders, 2002)
Development of Mount Vesuvius
Mount Vesuvius developed inside the caldera of an older volcano. This volcano was known as Monte
Somma. Monte Somma became active around 400,000 years ago. Only the northern side of Monte
Somma is left, creating a wall like ridge around the northern edge of Mount Vesuvius. This feature can
be observed today at the site of Mount Vesuvius. The development of Vesuvius produced a volcanic
complex consisting of the two volcanoes. (De Boer and Sanders, 2002)

Description Of AAutomatic Transmission
A automatic transmission (additionally called auto apparatus shift, self moving transmission or AT) is
a sort of engine vehicle transmission that can naturally change gear proportions as the vehicle moves,
liberating the driver from needing to change gears physically. Like other transmission frameworks on
vehicles, it permits an inward ignition motor, most appropriate to keep running at a moderately high
rotational rate, to give a scope of rate and torque yields essential for vehicular travel.
The most prominent structure found in vehicles is the hydraulic automatic transmission. Comparable
however bigger gadgets are additionally utilized for overwhelming obligation business and
mechanical vehicles and gear. This framework utilizes a liquid coupling as a part of spot of a rubbing
grip, and fulfills apparatus changes by locking and opening an arrangement of planetary riggings.
These frameworks have a characterized arrangement of apparatus reaches, frequently with a stopping
pawl that bolts the yield shaft of the transmission to keep the vehicle from moving either forward or in
reverse. A few machines with restricted rate runs or altered motor paces, for example, a few forklifts
and yard cutters, just utilize a torque converter to give a variable adapting of the motor to the wheels.
Other than the conventional programmed transmissions, there are additionally different sorts of
robotized transmissions, for example, a ceaselessly variable transmission (CVT) and self loader

If you do not know a pipe has frozen and has been damaged, when the frozen water thaws enough to
allow water flow to return, this is when unexpected flooding can occur due to a burst pipe. Frozen
water applies thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch on a pipe, so it is no wonder that they
sometimes break. If you happen to be away from home when this happens, it spells disaster.
If you have a pipe that burst unexpectedly, shuts off the valve to that pipe. You may need to turn off all
the water to your home. The more quickly you can get the water off, the less flooding there will be. If
appliances or any electrical thing is getting wet, turn off the electricity first, then the water. After you

If plumbing is not your thing, then call one. Hopefully, you only have one pipe that has burst,

Invitation To Sociology Summary
Peter L. Bergen wrote Invitation to Sociology with hopes to get the reader to reexamine his or her
social world and become cognizant of never before considered issues. He discusses many sociological
topics including culture shock, culture shock minus geographical displacement, and sociological
debunking. Culture shock refers to the feeling of disbelief or astonishment when something totally
new to one person is completely mundane and traditional to another person s culture. A similar
sentiment can occur in your own culture when something behind closed doors comes to light that you
had no idea was happening.
Within any society, people take their own way of life for granted. Like Bergen says in his article,
Invitation to Sociology, Americans take the fact that we are not cannibals for granted. However, if we
were to travel to another country that does practice cannibalism, we would be shocked. Most people
are not hoarders, so when we see on television or hear about those who are, we are bewildered by this,
also. This happens because most people tend to avoid shocking discoveries and ... Show more content

His justification for this is that he thinks people should look behind the facades. For example, what
factors go into choosing students in the college admission process? At first, one might say Grade Point
Average, SAT scores, or extracurricular activities. These factors may play some part in determining
who is accepted and who is rejected from a college, but if you look beyond that, you could argue that
race, gender, and social class also have some impact on admitting students. Colleges and universities
are always looking for diversity. If one year a college has less Hispanic females than usual, then more
Hispanic females will be accepted into the college for the following year. This goes for any race,
gender, and class. It is important to look behind the facades of social structure because that is where

Elements Of The Most Dangerous Game And The Most Dangerous...
The stories The Most Dangerous Game and The Gift of the Magi are both well written and vivid
stories. The Most Dangerous Game is about a hunter who becomes hunted, and The Gift of the Magi
is about a married couple trying to find each other gifts for christmas. Both stories have literary
elements that move the story along, but in The Most Dangerous Game the elements are used more
effectively. In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, two hunters, Whitney and Rainsford, sail past an
island with a bad reputation among sailors. Rainsford falls out and swims to shore. A man named
Zaroff takes him in for dinner. It turns out that he is a hunter like Rainsford, but his method of hunting
is different. Rainsford ends up being hunted by Zaroff and he comes to a very difficult choice. He
decides to risk it and jump off a cliff to swim back to shore. The story ends when Rainsford finds his
way back and challenges Zaroff. This story portrays many literary elements. One of them is
forshadowing. There are two ways that the author, Richard Connell, uses this technique. First off,
Whitney says, The world is made up of two classes. The hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I
are hunters. This foreshadows when Rainsford is going to be in the position of the huntee. Second, he
foreshadows the eerie island. The place has a reputation a bad one. says Whitney. Later on, the island
has great importance in the story. Another element Connell uses is situational irony. He uses it when

The Consumption Of Cow Milk, It Has Become Highly Consumed...
Introduction Since the discovery of the nutritional benefits associated with the consumption of cow s
milk, it has become highly consumed within the western diet and worldwide (Kanekanian 2014).
However, health concerns arose in the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries due to an increase
in infant mortality and milk borne illnesses relating to the consumption of raw cow s milk (Knechtges
2012). This became an increasing public health concern and highlighted the growing need to introduce
and enforce laws and legalisations relating to the processing and sale of cow s milk. In 1864 Louis
Pasteur discovered pasteurisation was an effective processing method for destroying pathogenic
microorganisms responsible for foodborne illness present in beverages; prolonging its life and quality
(Brown 2015). Current laws and legislations now state milk must undergo this process before being
sold for retail sale and intended for human consumption. Yet, there is still a growing demand for the
sale of raw cow s milk due to beliefs in greater nutritional benefits if consumed. This creates a
growing public health concern to ensure safe laws and legislations are in place and practice. This
paper investigates the introduction of a new milk processing technique allowing for the sale of raw
milk which undergoes a high water pressure processing (HPP) technique and whether it is an effective
alternate processing method. Moreover, it identifies the human health risks associated with the

Reading And Writing Of Reading
Are reading and writing connected? Reading and writing have always been strong elements, in our
lives, studies have shown that reading affects writing and vise versa. Stephen King said, If you could
put together a model car or assemble a piece of furniture from directions you could write a sentence .
He states the importance of two powerful elements, reading and writing, and by putting them together
we could make something out of them. I can come to terms with the fact that reading and writing are
the key elects to many opportunities although it has not always been easy to convey. Reading and
writing together are both the path to improving our vocabulary and expanding of our knowledge, even
though certain people will argue differently, and say that only one (reading or writing) of them is the
key element.
First, the important connection that reading and writing has to our vocabulary is that we expand our
mind and our words as well. Elements like reading and writing are both major factors on what
someone can accomplish, reading helps us become better writers in writing an essay or even a book. It
also starts from the time we start going to school, that we learn how to read and write, how to sound
our consonants and vowels. Instilling in us from the beginning the importance of reading and writing;

mentioned. The emergence of speakeasies and gin mills in the dark unoccupied centers of cities
created a fervent market for the illegal production and consumption of alcohol. Many lawmakers,
doctors and officials participated in the distribution of alcohol, and as a result, enabled the growth of
organized crime rings.
A second institution was in the growth of public amusements or fads. This constant change in
American mood and popular topic was a new revelation. Fads flowed from Mah Jongg, a chinese
game, to marathon dancing, to flagpole sitting and to crossword puzzles. These shifting trends mirror
the ever changing obsessions of the American public today as new concepts are constantly introduced
and forgotten. This mood around popular pastimes reflected the general free and whimsical mood that

Essay on Standardized Test
Standardized Test Standardized test have been a means measuring student performance. Some
important questions that always come up regarding standardized test are what are the tests really
measuring? Are they measuring a person s intelligence? Their ability to perform well on standardized
tests? Or just some random quantity of the person s IQ? When examining the issues around which
these tests are given and the content of the tests themselves, it becomes apparent that however useful
the tests may be for standardizing a group s intellectual ability, they are not a good indicator of
intelligence.
To issue a truly standardized test, the testing environment should be the same for everyone involved. A
person s environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What about physical intelligence, conversational intelligence, social intelligence, survival intelligence,
and the others that go into everyday life? Why are these important traits not figured into intelligence
tests? Standardized tests certainly get predictable results where academics are concerned, but they
should not be considered good indicators of general intelligence because of the omissions they make
in the testing process. To really gauge a person s intelligence, it would be necessary to put them
through a rigorous set of real life trials and document their performance. The standardized IQ tests of
today are test only a limited quality of a person s character that can hardly be referred to as
intelligence. Standardized test also have no way to compensate for cultural differences. Different
cultures have different methods of solving problems, and speediness is not always the best way to
tackle a problem. Therefore the time limitations on standardized test are a major drawback.
The reasons that IQ tests fail at their task can be separated into two main groups. The first grouping is
where the tests assume too much. Examples of this are the assumption that speed is always good,
vocabulary is a good indicator of intelligence, and that different test taking environments won t affect
the outcome. The second grouping comes because the tests gauge the wrong items. Examples of this
are different culture groups being asked to take the

An Organization s Future Success
An organization s future success depends on its own internal conditions as well as external conditions.
Companies need to identify its strength to remain profitable and its weaknesses for a competitive
advantage. An internal analysis focuses on the factors that give an organization certain advantages and
disadvantages in meeting the needs and creating value through competitive advantage and core
competence, value chain and financial analysis. Facebook generates a significant amount of its
revenue from advertising and from fees associated with their payments infrastructure that enables
users of Facebook to purchase virtual and digital content from developers. Facebook s has a Market

A framework for understanding social networks is developed; distinguishing networks on content
ranking mechanism, network type, and device focus. Facebook is found to be robust towards often
considered risks, such as privacy concerns and global shift towards smaller screens. Competitive
Advantage: Collection of factors that sets a company apart from its competitors and gives it a unique
position in the market while adding value for its customers. Facebook s competitive advantage its
massive user base that gives it a lasting edge over its rivals in the foreseeable future. Figure 1: Social
Media Users Figure 1, shows Facebook s monthly active users (MAU) is more than double its nearest
competitor; which makes it impossible for marketers to ignore. As a result, demand for Facebook s ads
surged to the point that the company can control the number of ads it displays to increase prices. Core
competencies: A unique set of lasting capabilities that a company relies on to achieve competitive
advantage and add value, innovation, efficiency, customer responsiveness, quality, special expertise.
The core competencies of Facebook is their ability to hire the top code writers, skilled engineers and
building data centers required to deliver exceptional service to its users and generate revenues.

Andy Clark s Natural-Born Cyborgs Essay
Andy Clark, in Natural Born Cyborgs, offers an extended argument that technology s impact on and
intertwining with ordinary biological human life is not to be feared, either psychologically or morally.
Clark offers several key concepts towards his line of reasoning. Clark argues that a human being
thinks and reasons based on the biological brain and body dynamically linked with the culture and
technological tools transparently accessible to the human. This form of thinking and reasoning
develops new quot;thinking systems quot; that which over time become second nature thoughts and
reasons and are the basis of even newer quot;thinking systems. quot; It is a repetitive cycle that
continues forever being built upon previous systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The example he uses is of a boy trapped in isolation at a computer or video game. Clark asserts that
isolation is a matter of perspective, and that as it appears the boy is alone, he is actually spending
quality time in his chosen community that is brought together only through the power of technology.
He contends that this may expand our embodied awareness, In a strange way, we may even come to
better appreciate the value and significance of our normal bodily presence by exploring such
alternatives. Not disembodiment, then, so much as a deeper understanding of why the body matters
and of the space of possible bodies and perspectives. Not isolation so much as a wider and less
geocentric kind of community. (Clark, 194) The argument strategy that Clark employs is similar to a
critiquing strategy where he clearly defines his opponent s concern(s), usually by the use of a real
world example. After he has made the reader well aware of his opponent s concern(s), he generally
uses the same example to tactfully pitch his proposal as a solution to eliminate or neutralize the
concern. The proposal is based on one of two sources, his personal beliefs or observations and theories
based on his research and comprehensive knowledge of humans, technology, and society. In some
instances, he will offer multiple proposals to strengthen his defense and allow the reader to understand
there a several possibilities. It appears from the heavy citation of Daniel Dennett s works

Robespierre, The French Revolution And The Symbol Of Evil...
Those people of the past that are studied as historical figures major and minor make up a virtually
insignificant portion of the people that have inhabited the earth since the beginning of civilization.
And yet to die without a memorable legacy is much more desirable a fate than to be remembered with
enduring hatred for what one accomplished and stood for during life. Certainly, there are many who
deserve to be remembered with spite people whose beliefs and actions were unacceptable whether
evaluated in a modern context or that of their own period. And yet still some are hated for centuries,
mainly due to having made powerful enemies while alive. Maximilien Robespierre, who is often
regarded as the leading figure of the French Revolution and the symbol of violent excess during that
period, was one such person. Although the view of Robespierre within the historical community has
softened (to a certain degree), he remains a personification of evil in the public mind. For example, the
first result of a quick Google search for most evil people includes a list of 25 historical figures, with
Robespierre at no. 17, ahead of others such as Adolf Eichmann, Heinrich Himmler, and Osama bin
Laden. While this website is by no means a scholarly source, it serves to underline the way in which
the average person views Robespierre in a grossly inaccurate fashion. The legacy that was created for
Robespierre by political opponents who used him as a scapegoat is not at all one that

The Smiley s Journey
He set the frog the down and went after this feller. (Twain) The story is good ol smiley chased after
this fella for days. His journey began just leaving camp, having no idea where this fella went he
simply just started along the main road hoping to find someone who might know where he d gone off
to. He eventually came across a man that seemed like he s been traveling for ages. His black hair was
down to his chin, his beard was down to his chest, his body was covered in bruises and scratches. Ol
smiley almost giving up hope of ever catching the man who d done him wrong, he asked if this fella
had seen anyone like the crook on the road. The man looked up angrily and stated that he had his
scratches because the man had robbed him of all he had. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After passing a large hillside, full of green and beautiful flowers as far as the eye could see. He found
himself at a dilapidated ol tavern. He decided to step off the road to ask the owner of that said tavern if
he s seen the crook he was after maybe also catch a drink before departing. Upon entering the tavern,
he felt as if he was being watched from afar. The tavern seemed like one good gust of wind could
blow the whole worn place down but he knew he wouldn t stay long. The tavern owner was an old
man that seemed barely able to walk, with his hair line receding behind his forehead. Smiley sat down
at the broken down ol bar and asked the bar keep if he seen anyone come in here matching the
description of the crook. The bar keep said he had some information on the man but nothing in this
world was free. Smiley, wanting to find this man at all cost even if it would cost him everything,
payed what little money he had left, ruining that chance of ever having a drink. The bar keep told him
he saw a man looking like that enter the road behind the tavern that led up the mountain. He said there
was nothing but death up in those parts with the road only leading to a dark

Prostitution In Prisoner 1167
The predicaments leading up to a person choosing prostitution as a method to support oneself
financially must be difficult, however many women residing in the East End of London succumbed to
such a lifestyle. Sadly, all five canonical victims of the notorious Ripper had come to live out their
lives in a manner most of us would find unfathomable. In James Tully book, Prisoner 1167: The
Madman who was Jack the Ripper, explains the how the East End of London was a place where
prostitution was prevalent:
The prostitutes in the East End come in all ages, shapes, and sizes from the prettiest of young girls to
most broken down hags and they catered for all classes and requirements. In 1888, the Metropolitan
Police were to estimate that there

Vladimir Nabokov and Lolita
A man of many talents, Vladimir Nabokov is known not only for his controversial work Lolita, he was
also an avid lepidopterist in particular, butterflies. There is no doubt that when penning Lolita s
character, Nabokov imprinted several butterfly characteristics on her. This essay however does not
seek to investigate the parallels between Lolita and the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Rather, it takes
the road less travelled and examines the parallels between Nabokov and Humbert Humbert, not as a
pervert, but as a scientist. Nabokov s interest in butterflies stemmed from a childhood obsession as he
recalls chasing butterflies (Time) in Switzerland in 1964. While most people relinquishes their
childhood hobbies, Nabokov pursued his interest in lepidopterology throughout his adult life where
his passion for butterflies lead him to become a specialist in lepidopterist. As a scientist, Nabokov was
acquainted to the clinical ways of science experiments and observations. While this is greatly
illustrated in Humbert s interaction with Lolita in both cases, the former assumes the role of the
scientist and the later the object of investigation Humbert s analytical nature is also reflected in
relation to other characters and incidents including himself as Nabokov draws from his scientific
persona in crafting Humbert s character. In both cases, the former assumes the role of the scientist and
the later the object of investigation. Scientists have to approach an

  • 2. Post Cold War Dbq Essay Following WWII and during the Cold War, there was a sense of instability in Europe. To counteract this, many nations believed that a united Europe could suppress the intense nationalism and militarism that lead to both world wars. Other nations reacted with advocacy, protest or were simply equivocal. Post WWII Europe was extremely chaotic and disjointed. Alliances had been made and broken during the world wars, so tensions were at an all time high throughout the continent. Germany was split into zones of occupation and the Cold War was brewing. For these reasons and many more, certain officials wanted to create a better sense of unity in Europe. In 1957, with the Treaty of Rome, the European Economic Committee (EEC) was formed. Officials ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Britain in the years after 1950 was especially concerned at what joining the EEC would bring. The British finance minister Harold Macmillan worried that by joining they would damage their internal commerce system even if they were gaining new outside trading opportunities (Document 7). As finance minister, he was likely thinking purely money and not acknowledging the other factors associated with unification. The EEC did not seem to be the perfect fit but staying out of it would put out the impression of isolation. Britain wanted a way of associating with this initiative in Europe in such a way as to benefit us all . Those in Britain did not appear to make a concrete decision; over 30 years after Macmillan issued his statement Margaret Thatcher voiced a similar opinion. In 1988, England had joined the EEC 15 years earlier but there were still topics of unanimity England was unsure about. In this case, Thatcher was concerned that the Single European Act which seeked a single currency and market would take away the uniqueness of each individual country. Thatcher believed that Europe would benefit from being more united and with a greater sense of common purpose, but it must be in a way which preserves the different traditions, parliamentary powers, and a sense of pride in one s culture (Document ... • 3. I Hear The Cry Of My Life I hear the cry. Of course it is four thirty in the morning and my little boy is ready for his middle of the night feeding. This is the everyday life of a mother of two. I wrap my bundle of joy up and feed him. While this usually isn t a normal time for people to think about their hopes and dreams it tends to be mine. At the age of sixteen, I moved with my husband to Norman and realized that the best opportunities for my family s future would be to pursue a professional degree. My college experience began the summer after I graduated a year early from high school. This definitely left me clueless at answering the dreaded question, What are you going to do for the rest of your life? But the one thing I had set in stone was being in the medical field. After picking the wrong major over and over, I felt passionate and committed to follow a career in medical imaging. When I think about a sonographer s job the first thing that comes to mind is a computer. Recently, I had multiple ultrasounds during my second pregnancy. Every time I stepped into the perinatal center I got excited. While I was thrilled to see my little boy swimming around I couldn t help but be excited to see the ultrasound preformed. When we were let back into the room I couldn t resist trying to read all the buttons on the computer and try to figure out how to work the machine. In high school, I joined the bot ball team. • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Planned Parenthood V) Planned Parenthood To reiterate how important symbol creation and media framing are to modern scandals, look no further than the allegations brought on family planning organization Planned Parenthood in 2015. In many ways, the scandals themselves were nearly identical in composition. David Daleiden, a journalist and founder of the pro life group the Center for Medical Progress, accumulated undercover footage at eleven Planned Parenthood offices claiming to be a representative for a fetal tissue procurement business. In the footage, abortion clinic doctors and executives [admit] that their fetal tissue procurement agreements are profitable for clinics and help keep their bottom line healthy. A report from the Center for Medical Progress goes into detail about Planned Parenthood works with StemExpress, LLC, and several other companies which supposedly profit off of fetal tissue. In fact, though the Center for Medical Progress does not seem to be affiliated with any larger organization like biggovernment.com was with Breitbart, there is a relatively noticeable attention to academic detail in his approach to investigative journalism. The report previously mentioned has full citations (most of them are either references to small, conservative news sites or citations from their own website) and there is a portion of centerformedicalprogress.org entirely dedicated to archived documents taken from Planned Parenthood chapters, including fetus tissue invoices and pricing ... Everyone spoke of the ship as being one of the strongest ships in the world as well as the biggest. The sinking of the RMS Titanic was one of, if not the most tragic accident of an ocean liner in history due to not just its mass death to almost two thirds of the passengers on board bu also the way it went down. The Titanic was said to be an unsinkable ship. Everyone that believed the ship was unsinkable was horribly mistaken. The Titanic sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. More than 1,500 people had lost their lives that fateful morning. It was in March 1909 that the Titanic was being assembled to be the largest and most elegant passenger ship in the world. The ship was built in the Harland and Wolff yard in Ireland. The lengthy process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, there were not enough lifeboats for everyone onboard. There was only enough room for about a third of them. In 1912, there were not any laws or regulations on needing a seat for everyone onboard a ship. The passengers with the higher statuses, which were the first and some second class passengers, were the first ones allowed to board the lifeboats. They also integrated the women and children rule when it came to boarding the lifeboats. Not everyone could be saved that tragic night. Cunard s Carpathia heard Titanic s distress signal around midnight and came to the rescue, but they could not get to Titanic s location quick enough. The Titanic sank below the surface at about 2:20 AM on April 15, 1912. Along with the ship, about 1,500 passengers went into the ocean with her. There were not many survivors of those 1,500 people. Most of the dead were third class passengers or those who were staying below deck for the entrie leg of the journey. All of the survivors in the lifeboats made it to the Carpathia after Titanic s ... Financial Ratio Analysis Griffith University, Gold Coast | Group Assignment for 2204AFE Financial Institutions Management | Comparative Analysis of ANZ and Westpac | | s2758329, s2762895, s2773847, s2784238Diamond, E., Dong, G., Huang, Y. amp; Lin, B.Due: 5th April 2012Tutor: Sonja Kobinger | | | The following report is a brief comparative analysis of two of Australia s largest deposit taking financial institutions (FI), Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. (ANZ) and Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac). This report seeks to identify which of the FIs has a greater aggregate return per dollar of equity and thus establish the highest performer, or most profitable, of the two. The Return on Equity Model (ROE) (Koch amp; MacDonald, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to ROA, ANZ s profitability fell short of Westpac s by 0.146%, with the ROA percentage at 0.95% and 1.096% respectively (Appendix A). The difference in profits is caused by Westpac s substantially higher total assets, which outweigh ANZ s by $75,740,000. Although ANZ has a greater level of liquid assets, Westpac s substantially higher loan portfolios generate higher returns. The lower ROA is caused by ANZ s interest bearing assets under performing, or carrying lower risks leading to lower yields, or a greater reliance upon non interest bearing assets. ROE is linked to ROA through the EM. ANZ s 2011 EM was 15.62x, slightly higher than Westpac s 15.35x, suggesting ANZ s assets are funded by more debt than Westpac, this combined with lower returns is usually indicative of a low performing institution (Koch amp; MacDonald, 2010, pg. 122). Further decomposition leads to analysis of the Expense ratio (ER) and Asset Utilisation (AU). ANZ s overall ER of 4.99% is relatively lower than Westpac s at 5.36% (Appendix A) supporting the earlier conclusion that ANZ s lower ROA is caused by lower earning interest bearing assets rather than an inability to control expenses (Koch amp; MacDonald, 2010, pg. 122). ANZ s lower ER can be attributed to its considerably lower Interest Expense (IE) percentage, 3.35% compared with Westpac s 4.05% (Appendix A), suggesting that, during ... • 9. Multiple Sclerosis Report Worldwide, more than 2.3 million people are currently affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This condition is a life long, potentially debilitating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) (Pasquier, 2014, 537). Specifically, it is a chronic auto immune disease that attacks the central nervous system. Furthermore, the person s own immune system does not recognize the neurons and attacks the myelin, and the nerve fibers it covers and protects. The myelin then creates scar tissue which causes damage and keeps the nerve impulses in the neuron from being able to travel to the brain or the spinal cord. If this occurs, bodily functions become difficult or impossible because messages aren t being delivered to or from the organs back to the CNS. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What patients experience due to this disease are a range of physical and cognitive problems. According to Bonafede (2013), these symptoms may include difficulty with balance, muscle coordination, memory, concentration, vision and speech. Moreover, they may come and go or become progressively worse, which will end up hindering the person s abilities and productivity. Until recently, the major course of therapy only included the use of steroids, due to their immunosuppressive qualities; however, now several new compounds have been developed and approved, in hopes to change the course of the disease (Tavazzi, 2014, 833). Current available treatments include steroids and Glatiramer acetate, Natalizumab, and Fingolimod. The first, suppresses the immune system to reduce the inflammatory response, thus avoiding the immune cells from entering the central nervous system. However, long term use of steroids puts the patient at risk for infection or hypertension; so, during the use of these drugs one must make into account if the benefits outweigh the risk. The latter, is a synthetic amino acid polymer resembling myelin basic protein, delivered via injection (Tavazzi, 2014, 833). To be more specific, it is thought to set the immune system so as not to attack the myelin, so as to reduce its scarring and damage to the CNS. It has been shown to be safe and well tolerated. • 10. Solemn Soot and Social Despair In the Transformative World... Solemn Soot and Social Despair In the Transformative World of William Blake England was changing. The rolling green shires and inspiring scenery that was fixed in the earliest memories of the Romantic poets was quickly vanishing. There was a trade off happening. Rivets for rocks, chimney stacks for trees, locomotives for carriages and steal tracks for cobblestone. Piece by piece England s quaint agricultural backdrop was being replaced by a stern industrial one. Progress! Some shouted. The greater good! Others exclaimed. Expansion was becoming virtuous. In droves they came from the country to work in London s factories. The machines ruled the fields now. Farmers turned their plows in for hammers and the way peopled lived was never going to be the same. A new social class was developing in England. It was the working class. And although a wider segment of the population was producing, creating steam for the Empire, certain leading minds of the time had to examine the under belly of this fiery beast. In William Blake s poems The Chimney Sweeper and London he does just that. Through this examination Blake dwells on the theme of the loss of innocence. He writes these two works in a straight forward tone, almost like a social awareness pamphlet, urging the reader to wake up. And in typical Romantic fashion he does this through stark imagery. What impression would a first time reader have after digesting these pieces when first published? Depending on their class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First of all, Macbeth is directly influenced by the witches when they show him he will become the king, because this leads him to believe he is entitled to certain power and his thirst for it grows. Despite the fact that most Americans look down at the south s shameful past of slavery, it is known that history is written by the victors, and that we must critically judge the north for the treatment of its workers like historians have judged the south in order to gain a better understanding of the situation. By 1860 the manufacturing industry was growing fast, there were approximately 140,000 factories mostly located in the north with about 1.5 million factory workers. Each worker made a median of 2 real dollars in income per week. As can be seen, 2 dollars isn t much to keep an average family size of 5 persons afloat. Jo shows more of a masculine personality and one way it is displayed is through her bravery. Jo seeks adventures especially when she goes outside and plays Laurie and avoids her domestic responsibilities, which was considered not common in the nineteenth century. One example of Jo showing her bravery is when Laurie s, Jo s best friend, asks Jo to come over to his house, to see his library full of books. Laurie claims, that Jo will not come because being a girl, she would be too afraid to go alone. One of Jo s sisters Meg, tells to Jo that she can not run over to his house uninvited, walk in and have tea, and she should not be the one to chase after boys (33). In both situations Jo answers, I am not afraid of anything (31). Jo would always be found outside the house or alone with Laurie. She is never in the house, cooking, cleaning or helping her mother. This challenges the stereotypes but also shows how brave Jo is. Jo does not like being in the house; she would rather do what a nineteenth century man would prefer. However, how does the advancement of video games affect our relationships with one another? While a group of people strongly believe that it is helping bring people together, the addiction, the over competitiveness mentality, and the frustration that video games generate are, in reality, pushing people apart. Video games are addictive. It makes its users forget themselves and their surroundings, including their loved ones. What makes people addicted to video games is the fact that video games are constantly rewarding people for every little in game act they do when playing the game. For instance, one gains virtual currency or skill points for every point, rebounds, blocks, and steals one records in the game NBA 2K. Another example, one gains money and reputation points every time one finish a mission in the game Grand Theft Auto. The constant rewards are a type of positive reinforcement that people do not easily receive in real life and this makes people want to keep playing the games over and over again: The addition of a stimulus [will] increase the probability that a behavior will be repeated (Grison 212). In this instance, the addition of a stimulus is the rewards (virtual currency or reputation points) that video games give to its users and the behavior that is expected to be repeated is the act of playing that video games. Introduction Since the discovery of the nutritional benefits associated with the consumption of cow s milk, it has become highly consumed within the western diet and worldwide (Kanekanian 2014). However, health concerns arose in the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries due to an increase in infant mortality and milk borne illnesses relating to the consumption of raw cow s milk (Knechtges 2012). This became an increasing public health concern and highlighted the growing need to introduce and enforce laws and legalisations relating to the processing and sale of cow s milk. In 1864 Louis Pasteur discovered pasteurisation was an effective processing method for destroying pathogenic microorganisms responsible for foodborne illness present in beverages; prolonging its life and quality (Brown 2015). Yet, there is still a growing demand for the sale of raw cow s milk due to beliefs in greater nutritional benefits if consumed. This creates a growing public health concern to ensure safe laws and legislations are in place and practice. I can come to terms with the fact that reading and writing are the key elects to many opportunities although it has not always been easy to convey. Reading and writing together are both the path to improving our vocabulary and expanding of our knowledge, even though certain people will argue differently, and say that only one (reading or writing) of them is the key element. • 42. Calvin Coolidge s Accomplishments The 1920 s in itself is perhaps the most definitive time period in American history. The period is bookended by the triumph of the Great War and the economic crisis of the Great Depression. The era, aptly nicknamed The Jazz Age, by author F. Scott Fitzgerald, brought changes for all people. The twenties followed the rise of black culture with the Harlem Renaissance, which spread jazz music to the nation. Women triumphed and continued to push the limits of their societal expectations after they finally received the right to vote with the 19th amendment. Organized crime came to the forefront of society as bootlegging and speakeasies became common with the enforcement of the prohibition. As these cultures emerged, it became clear that America ... Miller begins his coverage of organized crime with the first recorded criminal activity after the implementation of the prohibition, which occurred only 59 minutes after the prohibition began, with the theft of $100,000 worth of whiskey. This record of gang activity was the first of many in the following years which Miller mentioned. The emergence of speakeasies and gin mills in the dark unoccupied centers of cities created a fervent market for the illegal production and consumption of alcohol. Many lawmakers, doctors and officials participated in the distribution of alcohol, and as a result, enabled the growth of organized crime rings. A second institution was in the growth of public amusements or fads. This constant change in American mood and popular topic was a new revelation. Fads flowed from Mah Jongg, a chinese game, to marathon dancing, to flagpole sitting and to crossword puzzles. These shifting trends mirror the ever changing obsessions of the American public today as new concepts are constantly introduced and forgotten. • 43. Essay on Standardized Test Standardized Test Standardized test have been a means measuring student performance. Some important questions that always come up regarding standardized test are what are the tests really measuring? Are they measuring a person s intelligence? Their ability to perform well on standardized tests? Or just some random quantity of the person s IQ? When examining the issues around which these tests are given and the content of the tests themselves, it becomes apparent that however useful the tests may be for standardizing a group s intellectual ability, they are not a good indicator of intelligence. To issue a truly standardized test, the testing environment should be the same for everyone involved. A person s environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What about physical intelligence, conversational intelligence, social intelligence, survival intelligence, and the others that go into everyday life? Why are these important traits not figured into intelligence tests? Standardized tests certainly get predictable results where academics are concerned, but they should not be considered good indicators of general intelligence because of the omissions they make in the testing process. To really gauge a person s intelligence, it would be necessary to put them through a rigorous set of real life trials and document their performance. The standardized IQ tests of today are test only a limited quality of a person s character that can hardly be referred to as intelligence. Standardized test also have no way to compensate for cultural differences. Different cultures have different methods of solving problems, and speediness is not always the best way to tackle a problem. Therefore the time limitations on standardized test are a major drawback. The reasons that IQ tests fail at their task can be separated into two main groups. The first grouping is where the tests assume too much. Examples of this are the assumption that speed is always good, vocabulary is a good indicator of intelligence, and that different test taking environments won t affect the outcome. The second grouping comes because the tests gauge the wrong items. Examples of this are different culture groups being asked to take the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Andy Clark s Natural-Born Cyborgs Essay Andy Clark, in Natural Born Cyborgs, offers an extended argument that technology s impact on and intertwining with ordinary biological human life is not to be feared, either psychologically or morally. Clark offers several key concepts towards his line of reasoning. Clark argues that a human being thinks and reasons based on the biological brain and body dynamically linked with the culture and technological tools transparently accessible to the human. This form of thinking and reasoning develops new quot;thinking systems quot; that which over time become second nature thoughts and reasons and are the basis of even newer quot;thinking systems. quot; It is a repetitive cycle that continues forever being built upon previous systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The example he uses is of a boy trapped in isolation at a computer or video game. Clark asserts that isolation is a matter of perspective, and that as it appears the boy is alone, he is actually spending quality time in his chosen community that is brought together only through the power of technology. He contends that this may expand our embodied awareness, In a strange way, we may even come to better appreciate the value and significance of our normal bodily presence by exploring such alternatives. Not disembodiment, then, so much as a deeper understanding of why the body matters and of the space of possible bodies and perspectives. Not isolation so much as a wider and less geocentric kind of community. (Clark, 194) The argument strategy that Clark employs is similar to a critiquing strategy where he clearly defines his opponent s concern(s), usually by the use of a real world example. After he has made the reader well aware of his opponent s concern(s), he generally uses the same example to tactfully pitch his proposal as a solution to eliminate or neutralize the concern. The proposal is based on one of two sources, his personal beliefs or observations and theories based on his research and comprehensive knowledge of humans, technology, and society. In some instances, he will offer multiple proposals to strengthen his defense and allow the reader to understand there a several possibilities. • 46. Robespierre, The French Revolution And The Symbol Of Evil... Those people of the past that are studied as historical figures major and minor make up a virtually insignificant portion of the people that have inhabited the earth since the beginning of civilization. And yet to die without a memorable legacy is much more desirable a fate than to be remembered with enduring hatred for what one accomplished and stood for during life. Certainly, there are many who deserve to be remembered with spite people whose beliefs and actions were unacceptable whether evaluated in a modern context or that of their own period. And yet still some are hated for centuries, mainly due to having made powerful enemies while alive. Maximilien Robespierre, who is often regarded as the leading figure of the French Revolution and the symbol of violent excess during that period, was one such person. Although the view of Robespierre within the historical community has softened (to a certain degree), he remains a personification of evil in the public mind. For example, the first result of a quick Google search for most evil people includes a list of 25 historical figures, with Robespierre at no. 17, ahead of others such as Adolf Eichmann, Heinrich Himmler, and Osama bin Laden. While this website is by no means a scholarly source, it serves to underline the way in which the average person views Robespierre in a grossly inaccurate fashion. • 49. Vladimir Nabokov and Lolita A man of many talents, Vladimir Nabokov is known not only for his controversial work Lolita, he was also an avid lepidopterist in particular, butterflies. There is no doubt that when penning Lolita s character, Nabokov imprinted several butterfly characteristics on her. This essay however does not seek to investigate the parallels between Lolita and the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Rather, it takes the road less travelled and examines the parallels between Nabokov and Humbert Humbert, not as a pervert, but as a scientist. Nabokov s interest in butterflies stemmed from a childhood obsession as he recalls chasing butterflies (Time) in Switzerland in 1964. While most people relinquishes their childhood hobbies, Nabokov pursued his interest in lepidopterology throughout his adult life where his passion for butterflies lead him to become a specialist in lepidopterist. As a scientist, Nabokov was acquainted to the clinical ways of science experiments and observations. While this is greatly illustrated in Humbert s interaction with Lolita in both cases, the former assumes the role of the scientist and the later the object of investigation Humbert s analytical nature is also reflected in relation to other characters and incidents including himself as Nabokov draws from his scientific persona in crafting Humbert s character. In both cases, the former assumes the role of the scientist and the later the object of investigation. Scientists have to approach an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
