DEFINITION
• Floods are temporarily inundation of large
regions as a result of an increase in reservoir
or the river flooding their banks.
• A flood is an over flow of an expanse of
water that submerges land
CAUSES
1. Over flow of river water
2. Blocking of river channel
3. Storms in the sea
4. Cyclones& Tsunamis over water bodies

PERSONAL PROTECTION
1. MEASURES BEFORE FLOOD
• Good town planning (GOVT. Responsibility)
reduces the impact of floods
• People in risk areas(Down streams) should
know special signals used(FOG HORNS) when
a dam threatens to break
• Small floods can be fore seen by watching
water level after heavy rains and regularly
listening to weather fore cast.
• Particular vigilance must be exercised at the
time of the year in which cyclones & hurricane
occur.

• Turn off the electricity to prevent
electrocution.
• Take vulnerable people to upper floor.
• Beware of water contamination.
• Evacuate danger zones as ordered by
authorities.
• Emergency supply should be taken by the
families during the evacuation.

• Evacuated people should not return home
until ordered by authorities.
• Untreated water must not be used for
drinking unless it is declared safe.
• Clean and disinfect any room that has been
flooded.
