The famous Five
 The famous five were a group Canadian of women
working together to help give all women the rights
they deserve.
 The famous five consisted of: Nellie McClung, Emily
Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Henrietta
Edwards.
 The famous five was also called The Valiant Five.
Emily Murphy
 Emily Murphy was born on March 14th, 1868 and died
on Oct.17th, 1933 at age 65.
 She was best known for helping in Canadian
Feminism.
 She was an author, a Canadian Women’s rights
activist, and she served as a jurist.
 She was the third of 6 children.
 She was the first was the first female
judge on the British Empire.
Nellie McClung
 Born Oct. 20th, 1873, died Sept. 1st, 1951 at age 77.
 She was a member of The Alberta Legislature and a
famous suffragist.
 She was married to Robert Wesley McClung.
 She was born in Chatsworth Ontario.
 Her and Robert had 5 children, they are:
Mark, Jack, Florence, Horace, and Paul.
 She taught in a one room school house
in Summerset, Manitoba.
Henrietta Muir Edwards
 Born Dec. 18th, 1849 and died Nov.10th, 1931.
 She was born Henrietta Louise Muir in Montreal.
 In Oct. 2009 her and the famous five were voted the
“honorary Sensations” by the Senate.
Irene Parbly
 Born Jan.9, 1868 and died July 12,1965.
 She was born Irene Marryat in London, England and
came to Canada in 1896.
 Parbly helped find the first woman's local United
Farms of Alberta in 1913.
 In 1921 she was elected to the Alberta
Legislature for the Riding of Lacombe
holding the riding for 14 years.
Louise McKinney
 Born Sept.22,1868 and died July 10 1931.
 She was born Louise Crummy in Frankville, Ontario.
 She was the first woman sworn in to be
the legislative Assembly in Alberta.
 Louise was the first elected woman to a
legislature in Canada
and in the British
Empire from 1917-1921.

What Happened?
 These five extraordinary women were the heart and
soul of the fight for women’s rights.
 They were best known as the group who struggled to
have women recognized as “people” by law.
 The right for women (The Person’s Case) is the most
well known victory for the Famous Five,
 They gave women the right to vote and run in
elections.
When Did It Happen?
 They won the right to vote in 1917.
 They won the right to run in elections in 1919
 In the late 19th century, women could vote only in the
town/ city elections and only if they owned property.
Achievements
 The Famous Five gave women the rights that only
men had.
 Achieving the female suffrage and winning the
Person’s Case were highlights in the 20th century.
 The Famous Five worked and achieved the following:
Equal pay for equal work
Laws surroundings
women’s property rights
How Did it Happen?
 They held rallies, gave speeches, and even wrote
letters to politicians.
 In the First World War thousands of women joined
the work force and proved to be the equal of men.
 Manitoba was the first province to give women the
right to vote and by 1917 women could vote in
Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and
Ontario.
 Women got the right to run in elections in 1919.
Where Did it Happen?
 In all provinces and Territories across Canada.
 Nellie was from Manitoba.
 Emily was from Alberta.
 Henrietta was born in Quebec.
 Irene was from England.
 Louise was born in Ontario.

A girl in the developing world receiving 7
years of education marries 4 years later on
average and has fewer, yet healthier,
children
If all women completed primary education,
there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths
WHAT’S KEEPING GIRLS OUT OF
SCHOOL?
Many barriers prevent girls from receiving
the education they deserve. Most of these
obstacles are unimaginable to many of us
here in Canada, but for millions of girls in
developing countries, it’s a daily reality.
These include:
Child, early and forced marriage
Poverty
Poor health and nutrition
Family care and domestic housework
Early pregnancy
Violence in schools
The long distance to school
A lack of girls’ washrooms
You’re going to become an advocate
for children’s education.

  • 1. EQUAL RIGHTS? Have a look at the image on the left. What does it symbolize? Do you agree with the idea conveyed? Why (not)?
  • 2. Do you think that men and women have the same rights these days? Think about….a) house chores; b) payments; c) finding a job Now think about boys and girls who are your age. Are they being treated equally? Why (not)?

The famous Five  The famous five were a group Canadian of women working together to help give all women the rights they deserve.  The famous five consisted of: Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Edwards.  The famous five was also called The Valiant Five.

Emily Murphy  Emily Murphy was born on March 14th, 1868 and died on Oct.17th, 1933 at age 65.  She was best known for helping in Canadian Feminism.  She was an author, a Canadian Women’s rights activist, and she served as a jurist.  She was the third of 6 children.  She was the first was the first female judge on the British Empire.

Nellie McClung  Born Oct. 20th, 1873, died Sept. 1st, 1951 at age 77.  She was a member of The Alberta Legislature and a famous suffragist.  She was married to Robert Wesley McClung.  She was born in Chatsworth Ontario.  Her and Robert had 5 children, they are: Mark, Jack, Florence, Horace, and Paul.  She taught in a one room school house in Summerset, Manitoba.
  • 11. Henrietta Muir Edwards  Born Dec. 18th, 1849 and died Nov.10th, 1931.  She was born Henrietta Louise Muir in Montreal.  In Oct. 2009 her and the famous five were voted the “honorary Sensations” by the Senate.

Irene Parbly  Born Jan.9, 1868 and died July 12,1965.  She was born Irene Marryat in London, England and came to Canada in 1896.  Parbly helped find the first woman's local United Farms of Alberta in 1913.  In 1921 she was elected to the Alberta Legislature for the Riding of Lacombe holding the riding for 14 years.

Louise McKinney  Born Sept.22,1868 and died July 10 1931.  She was born Louise Crummy in Frankville, Ontario.  She was the first woman sworn in to be the legislative Assembly in Alberta.  Louise was the first elected woman to a legislature in Canada and in the British Empire from 1917-1921.

What Happened?  These five extraordinary women were the heart and soul of the fight for women’s rights.  They were best known as the group who struggled to have women recognized as “people” by law.  The right for women (The Person’s Case) is the most well known victory for the Famous Five,  They gave women the right to vote and run in elections.
  • 16. When Did It Happen?  They won the right to vote in 1917.  They won the right to run in elections in 1919  In the late 19th century, women could vote only in the town/ city elections and only if they owned property.
  • 17. Achievements  The Famous Five gave women the rights that only men had.  Achieving the female suffrage and winning the Person’s Case were highlights in the 20th century.  The Famous Five worked and achieved the following: Equal pay for equal work Laws surroundings women’s property rights
  • 18. How Did it Happen?  They held rallies, gave speeches, and even wrote letters to politicians.  In the First World War thousands of women joined the work force and proved to be the equal of men.  Manitoba was the first province to give women the right to vote and by 1917 women could vote in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.  Women got the right to run in elections in 1919.
  • 19. Where Did it Happen?  In all provinces and Territories across Canada.  Nellie was from Manitoba.  Emily was from Alberta.  Henrietta was born in Quebec.  Irene was from England.  Louise was born in Ontario.
