The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Name of the School Observed: NONESCOST Laboratory High School
School Address: Old Sagay, Sagay City Date of Visit: Jan 15&22, 2013
Year Level: 4th Year Subject Area: T.L.E.
1. What principles in teaching - learning were commonly applied?
In our 2 days observation experience, we had identified two principles of teaching-learning.
One of it is “A non-threatening atmosphere enhances learning”. The physical
condition of the classroom is well-lighted and well-ventilated. In fact, it is air-conditioned. And
the teacher himself creates a psychological atmosphere inside the classroom that is
supportive of learning. The other one is “Learning is meaningful when it is connected to
students’ everyday life. As we observed, the teacher always relate the lesson to students’ life
experiences. He ask his students if who among them experienced already the application of
technology into their lives.
3. 2. What instructional materials were used in teaching?
The teacher used programmed materials such as PowerPoint presentations and text slides
in discussing the lesson. He also used computer units when he involved his students to hands
on learning experience.
3. Which of the principles in teaching facilitate the cognitive, metacognitive and positive
motivational processes of learning?
There are several principles in teaching which facilitate the cognitive, metacognitive and
positive motivational processes of learning. They are the following: a.) A non-threatening
atmosphere enhances learning; b.) Learning is an active process; c.) The more senses that are
involved in learning, the more and the better learning; d.) Learning is reflective; e.) Emotion
has the power to increase retention and learning; f.) Good teaching goes beyond recall of
information; and g.) An integrated teaching approach is far more effective than teaching
isolated bits of information.
Scribble a brief reflection of your feelings and insights from your observation
experience.
In our two days observation experience at NONESCOST Laboratory High School in the class
of Mr. Tonepher Caballero, we have learned that it is best to engage our students to varied
activities which provides “hands-on-minds-on” learning. This reminds us of a saying which says
“What I hear, I forget. What I see, I remember. What I do, I understand”.
We also learned that there should have a connection between the lesson that you are
going to discussed and the instruction material that you are going to use in your lesson.
5. At the end of this activity, we will be able to identify and describe the teacher’s activity and
the behavior of the learners in these activities.

Name of the School Observed: NONESCOST Laboratory High School
School Address: Old Sagay, Sagay City Date of Visit: January 15, 2013
Year Level: IV-Diamond Subject Area: T.L.E.
Topic: Electronic Communication
Description of Teaching Strategies:
The teacher uses inquiry approach in reviewing and in discussing the lesson. He asks his
students with what-why-how questions. He also let his students do procedural knowledge
through hands-on-learning activity. And he uses a PowerPoint presentation in presenting and
in discussing the lesson.
Description of Learning Activities:
The teacher engaged his students in an individual activity through hands-on learning. He
let his students type their experiences through computers. He also involve his students in his
discussion through reading the powerpoint presentation and interacting with possible
6. questions that may arise during the discussion.
Description of Learners’ Participation (proportion of learners who participated and quality
of participation):
Almost 80% of all the learners are listening and are participating with the discussion. Few only
especially some of the boys are not participating well in the lesson. They tend to react with
what the teacher is discussing. These boys are sometimes talkative during their activity but
their teacher always lead or guide them to have a smooth flow of discussion.

Scribble a brief reflection of your feelings and insights from your observation
experience.
In our more than 5 days of observation experience at NONESCOST Laboratory High School
in the class of Mr. Tonepher Caballero, we had learned that the teacher’s teaching strategy greatly
affects students’ attitudes and behaviors towards the subject.
We had also proved to ourselves that learning is primarily controlled by the learner and not
by the teacher; that learning is an experience which occurs inside the learner and is activated by
the learner and that whatever efforts the teacher has done, it will only become useless if the
learners don’t find it interesting to learn.
12. At the end of this activity, we are able to identify the lesson objectives, learning activities,
instructional materials and assessment tools used by the teacher and to draw insights from
the teacher as to the reasons of their use in such learning activities.
An Observation Guide for Assisting the Teacher
1. What are the objectives of the lesson?
Understand tools and methods used to obtain information from the internet.
Understand internet search tools and methods.
Understand how to validate, authenticate and legally use information from the internet.
2. How do the learners participate in the learning activities?
The learners were participating well in every activity. They always listen to their teacher’s
instruction which was provided to them wherein they successfully done their activity.
3. What instructional materials are employed?
Instructional materials such as computers, programmed materials and powerpoint
presentation.
13. 4. How does the teacher assess the learning in the lesson? Is she assessing the process or the
product?
The teacher assesses the learning of the students through the process. When he give an activity
to his students, he never let his students to do it by themselves. Instead, he roams around and
checks the works of his students if it is already correct or need to improve.
5. What reasons does the teacher give in having such learning activities?
He’s giving such learning activities for his students to know how to manipulate the computers.
He give these learning activities also for his students to be active in the class because if he didn’t do
it, there is a tendency that the students will get bored.

the product of students’ learning.
5. What reasons does the teacher give in having such learning activities?
In order for the students to develop their skills and attitudes towards the use of computers and
other technologies in communication. Also, to motivate the students to participate in the
discussion or learning activity.

2. How do the learners participate in the learning activities?
The learners are actively participating in the class. When the teacher asks his learners, they
answered it well. There is what we called “sharing of ideas” between the teacher and his students.
The teacher injects some jokes in the discussion in order that the level of interest of the students
will arouse. And sometimes, he let his students read the written texts on the powerpoint
17. presentation.
3. What instructional materials are employed?
He used powerpoint presentation and programmed materials.
4. How does the teacher assess the learning in the lesson? Is she assessing the process or the

He is able to discuss and explain further of what the topic is all about. He is assessing his
students’ learning both the process and the product, but he is assessing more on the process than
the product. Otherwise, he involves his students through discussion.
5. What reasons does the teacher give in having such learning activities?
For me, he use and give such learning activities because he wants his learners to be active.
And that’s why sometimes he injects some jokes so that the interest of the students will arouse;
the students will not get bored. And he gives also such learning activities because he wants his
learners understand and realize how important the use of computers is. If it is a “boon or bane” to
the teaching-learning process.
