Fertilization in angiosperms involves a process called double fertilization, where one male gamete fuses with the female gamete to form a zygote which develops into the embryo, and the other male gamete fuses with two female nuclei to form the endosperm which nourishes the developing embryo. The male gametes are contained within pollen grains which adhere and hydrate on the stigma, with compatible pollen tubes growing through the style and ovary to enter an ovule and discharge the gametes into the embryo sac for the two fertilization events.
