Context
This fanzine was produced in early 2015 for the university of the arts
London .They produced a 24 page fanzine with original stylised
drawings made through digital drawing .This product was made
due to the author being told that games were “pointless time
wasters” inspiring them to talk about the importance of
videogames.
Style
The style of this magazine has a very select colour pallet of
red, blue, white and black these are traditionally used in newspapers
giving the fanzine a sophisticated and sensible feel. The illustrations
are all based off of or interpretations of existing art in a unique style.
Techniques
This fanzine was made digitally and exclusively made for online
reading. With the artwork being made presumably within
Photoshop and the main bodies being word processed. These are
techniques that I will use in my own product. The fanzine also uses a
mix of pages taken up by images or a traditional format
Content
The content itself includes articles about other products written by
the author and how they link to his argument, the text also uses
supportive quotes i.e. Andy Serkis. And as previously mentioned all
images are original drawings unless stated on the penultimate
page.
Context
This fanzine was made by Reece Crowder who is a graphic designer
who has made two other zines. This fanzine was made with modern
technology so most likely InDesign and Photoshop
Style
The colour scheme is quite limited with black, white and shades of
brown which make it appear smooth and mature. The font
resembles an indie coffee store with a mix of serif and sans serif
fonts
Techniques
This fanzine was made through digital methods and made for online
reading. With the artwork being made presumably within
Photoshop; the photos being taken by the creator and the main
bodies being word processed. These are techniques that I will look
to use within own product. The fanzine also uses a mix of pages
taken up by images or a traditional format
Content
The content is mainly facts and statements of different types of
coffee and what likers of a specific coffee are like. There are also
single and double pages dedicated to original images
Context
Modul is a fanzine based around the works of a modern Spanish
artist (Fernando Fom) which is arranged into themes within
separate issues. This fanzine is modern and was assembled with
modern programmes.
Style
This fanzine has a warm and neutral colour pallet of reds, beiges
and blacks giving it a very minimalistic feel. The art featured
within is extremely minimal and fits with the issues colour
scheme.
Techniques
The fanzine is made with modern methods and uses word
processing as it is online based. The artwork used takes up 1 page
on each double page spread. The fonts used are solely sans serif
to give it a modern feel.
Content
All pages after the intro are dedicated to titled artworks, other
bodies are explaining what the fanzine is about and a contents
page.
Context
This fanzine is very modern in which the creator does interviews
with artists and was created with modern programmes. This is
also the authors only fanzine.
Style
This fanzine has a very gothic style with scanned in original
artwork and photos as well as barbed wire acting as segmentors
and an entirely serif font. The colour scheme is entirely black and
white (except the front and back cover ) which also add to the
gothic aesthetic.
Techniques
The fanzine itself was most likely assembled in a graphic design
programme i.e. Photoshop or InDesign. Some of the photos and
illustrations are definitely hand drawn and scanned in , which is
something I can use in my own work.
Content
Written content includes the authors poems and interviews with
artists that fit the authors theme. In terms of images the content
includes photos of buildings, tapestry creatures, interviewees and
her own art
Context
This fanzine is made to inspire its readers to shape their
environment after the COVID-19 period. This is a very modern
fanzine and so will be made using modern creative applications.
Style
The style of the fanzine is very ‘modern’ with bright bold colour
scheme (mostly primary colours). There is also simple geometric
shapes as well as off centre text placement and solely sans serif
fonts, all adding to the ‘modern’ motif.
Techniques
This fanzine was made solely digitally, any images from within
the fanzine aren't original however are poignant and relevant to
the subject and do look good when taking up a single page. All
the text is word processed .
Content
The written content is done in a traditionally newspaper fashion
as in standard articles in columns with quotes woven in. In terms
of visual content images follow the newspaper trend with being
relevant to the article and not much else, however introducing
the segment is a visually pleasing double page spread.
Research summary
 Fanzine does not holey follow conventions of magazines
 Most if not all fanzines have an indie feel.
 Colour schemes should be consistent or consistently inconsistent throughout
 Hand drawn assets generally add to the feel of the fanzine
 Original assets are better received
 Written content is mostly minimal paragraphs or columns
 Images can take up an entire page if needed
 Text type should be more consistent
 Length of fanzines are around 8- 32 pages on average
 Front covers can be non conventional i.e. title and image or even just an image
Bibliography:
 Caz (February 9th 2015) – A ProfoundWaste ofTime
 Narel R (May 17th 2020) – Landscape
 Nhu Nguyen (July 7th 2020) - NOWWHAT

  • 4. Context Modul is a fanzine based around the works of a modern Spanish artist (Fernando Fom) which is arranged into themes within separate issues. This fanzine is modern and was assembled with modern programmes. Style This fanzine has a warm and neutral colour pallet of reds, beiges and blacks giving it a very minimalistic feel. The art featured within is extremely minimal and fits with the issues colour scheme. Techniques The fanzine is made with modern methods and uses word processing as it is online based. The artwork used takes up 1 page on each double page spread. The fonts used are solely sans serif to give it a modern feel. Style This fanzine has a very gothic style with scanned in original artwork and photos as well as barbed wire acting as segmentors and an entirely serif font. The colour scheme is entirely black and white (except the front and back cover ) which also add to the gothic aesthetic. Techniques The fanzine itself was most likely assembled in a graphic design programme i.e. Photoshop or InDesign. Some of the photos and illustrations are definitely hand drawn and scanned in , which is something I can use in my own work. • 6. Context This fanzine is made to inspire its readers to shape their environment after the COVID-19 period. This is a very modern fanzine and so will be made using modern creative applications. Style The style of the fanzine is very ‘modern’ with bright bold colour scheme (mostly primary colours). There is also simple geometric shapes as well as off centre text placement and solely sans serif fonts, all adding to the ‘modern’ motif. Techniques This fanzine was made solely digitally, any images from within the fanzine aren't original however are poignant and relevant to the subject and do look good when taking up a single page. All the text is word processed . Content The written content is done in a traditionally newspaper fashion as in standard articles in columns with quotes woven in. In terms of visual content images follow the newspaper trend with being relevant to the article and not much else, however introducing the segment is a visually pleasing double page spread.

Editor's Notes

  1. Context affects what is produced, how it is produced and who can produce it. Technology is part of the context. Early fanzines were hand made because there was no InDesign or Photoshop. Web-series simply didn’t existing because the web didn’t exist. People who don’t have access to jobs in mainstream media, to become journalists or editors, might produce work independently of that system. People who don’t see themselves or their interests being represented in main stream media, might produce something that represents them or their social group. The political situation will influence what someone decides to make. The cultural situation will influence what people make. Every media text is a product of its environment, just like people. Style: The way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed. The combination of distinctive features of literary or artistic expression, execution, or performance  characterizing a particular person, group, school, or era. For example, a podcast could be two people talking, it could be interviews and a voice over, it could just be a recording of a teaching session… how it is done, is the style. Techniques: How are these things being made? What methods are being used? Find out and also use your own experience. For example, is a fanzine being hand written or word processed? How do people making a web series set up their shooting spaces? The more you can find out about technique, the more you can get ideas for your own work. Content: The material, including text and images, that constitutes a publication or document. What is actually in this product? Break it down. Is it interviews, monologues, reviews, instructions… Identify the different types of content in the items you research, to help your own ideas.
