Experiences of Private Artificial Insemination Services in Ethiopia

Agriculture is important to Ethiopia's economy, employing 85% of the population. Livestock accounts for 40% of agricultural GDP but productivity is low, with dairy cows averaging 1-2 liters of milk per day. Private artificial insemination services have existed for less than 10 years but are struggling due to high costs of $460,686 to start. Challenges include farmers preferring lower-cost government services and a lack of regulation. Opportunities exist to support private services through loans, alternative semen sources, and improved monitoring to increase livestock productivity in Ethiopia.

— The low productivity of the Ethiopian diary sector has been explained by the genetic potentials and management practices. Milk production and consumption largely rely on the indigenous cows. To enhance the contribution of dairy to household food security, nutrition and income, adoption of improved dairy breeds together with the component practices is indispensable. To study the adoption of the dairy technologies and the factors stimulating the choices, a cross-sectional household survey was conducted in the central and eastern Ethiopia. Results declare that the rate of adoption of improved breeds, artificial insemination and improved forage remained to be limited. The uptake of concentrate feeding is found to be relatively better. As the joint multivariate probit estimation confirmed, there is complementarity and interdependence in the uptake of improved breeds, artificial insemination, concentrate feeds and improved forages. Utilization of forage lagged behind to complement adoption of improved cows. Tobit model determination confirmed that the same factors are affecting the adoption decisions. The factors responsible for the joint adoptions, the number of cows owned and intensity of adoption include education status, household wealth, access to markets and district centers, contacts with extension and gender roles. Both the joint and individual analyses highlighted the need for strategies that could overcome the constraints and ensure better uptake of the technologies.

The International Journal of Business Management and Technology

Dairying is one of the livestock productions practiced almost all over Ethiopia, involving a vast number of small, medium, or large-sized, subsistence or market-oriented farms. However, the structure and performance of dairy sectors and its products marketing both for domestic consumption and for export is generally perceived poor in Ethiopia due to different challenges. These challenges vary across different production system to another and/or from one location to another. Among other challenges seasonality of production, spoilage (lack of milk collecting facilities), poor animal health and management, inadequate supply of quality feed, low productivity and genetics ,quality problem, weak vertical integration, absence processing plant, inadequate permanent trade routes and other facilities like feeds, water, holding grounds, lack or non-provision of transport, lack of access to land, ineffectiveness and inadequate infrastructural and institutional set-ups, prevalence of diseases, lack of credit and inadequate market information are dominant in Ethiopia. Therefore, market infrastructure facilities, producers cooperative, feed quality and quantity provision system need to be strengthen for effective dairy value chain development.

Assessment of Dairy Marketing in Assosa District, Ethiopia

The important roles of livestock in the developing countries within the agricultural sector in contributing to rural livelihoods and particularly those of the poor are well recognized. Ethiopia holds large potential for dairy development due to its large livestock population, the favorable climate for improved, high-yielding animal breeds, and the relatively disease-free environment for livestock. This study was initiated to Assessment of Dairy Marketing in Assosa District, Ethiopia. The focus of the study was to identify actors and their roles in dairy marketing chains; and to identify the challenges and opportunities of dairy marketing chains in the study area. The type of data use for assessment is cross sectional data. Different variables were hypothesized to determine dairy marketing. The daa was supplemented by primary and secondary sources. Primary survey was conducted in Assosa district to obtain the total number of households that have dairy animals in the three selected kebeles for dairy production. The secondary data is generated from both published and unpublished documents. Descriptive statistics has been used to assess the generated data. The results obtained from this assessment indicate absence of training service and lack of transportation service were found to be the most important significant variables influencing dairy marketing in the district. Therefore, providing training and improving transportation facilities to strengthen the vertical and horizontal linkages among the marketing agents are recommended to develop and strengthen information on dairy marketing in the study area.

Chicken production has a major role in the economy of developing countries and backyard production is particularly important to women. Several programmes, in Ethiopia and else-where, have attempted to improve chicken production as a means to reduce poverty. A key constraint to chicken production identified by farmers is disease. This study used participatory rural appraisal methods to work with chicken-keepers in order to prioritise chicken diseases, place these within the context of other production constraints, and to explore perceptions of disease risk factors and biosecurity measures.The study, focused on Debre Zeit, Ethiopia, included 71 poultry keepers (41 backyard and 30 semi-intensive chicken producers). Although women played an important role in backyard production systems, semi-intensive farms were more likely to be controlled by men. Participants identified 9 constraints to production: 7 of 8 groups of backyard producers and 15/31 semi-intensive producers ranked diseases as the most important constraint to chicken production. In contrast to previous reports, farmers in both groups had considerable knowledge of diseases and of factors affecting disease risk. Both groups, but particularly semi-intensive producers, highlighted access to feed as a constraint. Many of the challenges faced by both groups were associated with difficulty accessing agricultural and veterinary inputs and expertise. The low involvement of women in semi-intensive production needs to be recognised by poultry development schemes. Provision needs to be made to allow access to inputs for a wide range of business models, particularly for those, such as women, who have limited access to the capital to allow them to make the jump from backyard to semi-intensive producer, and require support to slowly build up a flock into a profitable venture.
