1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? (use magazine to
show why they might be suitable e.g. target audiences & magazines they already sell are they similar
already?)
IPC would be suitable to be the media institution to distribute my media product because they have
previously worked with music magazines such as NME. NME are a popular music magazine which
focuses on alternative music and this means that IPC media will understand the target audience
more. IPC Media have also worked with alternative music magazines such as Uncut. This means that,
as the magazines are all of similar genres and target audiences, they would not be competing with
each other as much. However, as IPC work with various genres of magazines, their target audience is
predominantly female. Women are stereotypically more likely to be more interested in the genre of
pop, which could affect the popularity of my product.
Bauer distribute for Q Magazine, which focuses on various genres of popular music. It is seen as a
middle class magazine suitable for an older audience interested in alternative music. Bauer also
publish Kerrang! Magazine, which predominantly focus on a target audience interested in rock or
metal music. They clearly do not focus on a niche market as these genres and magazines attract a
wide target audience of different genders and ages. Furthermore, Bauer’s magazines are cheaper
than IPC’s, so this may appeal to my target audience. On the other hand, none of the magazines that
Bauer currently publish have similar genres to my magazine.
In conclusion, I think that IPC would be best to distribute my media product because they
understand and have worked with the same target audience before. Also, they are a big publisher,
which means a large consumer market will be open to the product.
IPC would be interested in distributing this
magazine because NME focuses on new
music and they publish for them.
The male that appears on my front cover
fits into the category of ‘alternative’ and
‘indie’. IPC are aware of this genre and
understand it, so are more likely to
publish for my media product.
Bauer would be interested in
distributing this magazine
because a young person is on
the front cover. This is
attractive to them because
their magazines are focused on
younger people.
