What kind of
media institution
might distribute
your media
product and why?
Bauer Media produce Kerrang! magazine, this would instantly make them experienced within producing
magazines which are aimed at the same target audience which I would be targeting – predominantly
teenagers/young adults. However, due to the fact that they already produce Kerrang! magazine, they would
potentially not be as suitable for producing my magazine due to the fact that they already have another Rock
magazine which is successful and would be their primary focus – therefore, this would be a disadvantage if
they was to produce my magazine.
An advantage of letting Bauer Media publish my magazine would be that they have shown that they are able
to target niche markets as they publish other magazines such as: GoFishing and heat – the latter of these two
is a gossip magazine and therefore, they are easily able to attract the female audience which my magazine
would primarily be aimed at.
Similarly to the last point made, Bauer Media would also be able to attract a male audience as they have
experience of doing this with the likes of MATCH! Magazine which is the biggest football magazine in the
UK – with football being primarily associated with males I am able to say that they are able to attract a male
audience and when this is combined with the female audience which would be directly targeted it can be said
that my magazine would be able to go mass market.
IPC Media are another big publishing company which would potentially consider publishing my music
magazine. The reason for this is because of the fact that currently, the only big music magazine which they
run is NME – this is primarily seen as alternative whilst still including features about Rock music in order to
attract this large audience. Therefore, if they was to publish my magazine, an advantage of this would be that
they could eliminate the rock music features from the NME magazine and solely focus on the alternative
music which is already their main focus – as they include bands such as Arctic Monkeys/Oasis regularly.
Then, if they published my document they would be able to still attract the rock audience but would be able
to specifically cater for them with the launch of my new magazine and this would also attract other sub-
cultures such as Emos and Goths – this would extend the reach of the magazine and therefore it can become
instantly popular amongst the fan base which the likes of NME already has.
However, IPC Media may not be willing to chance an already successful music magazine such as NME to
launch a magazine like mine. The reasoning behind this would be that NME is already one of the most
popular magazines on the market, and if they eliminated the element of Rock which they have been reporting
on since the magazine has been released the magazine may not be as successful and thus they may not be
willing to change something which is already successful.
Like Bauer Media, IPC Media are a large media company that own/produce a number of magazines for both
men and women and therefore, they would be able to attract both genders to buy the magazine and therefore
my magazine would be able to appeal to a mass market whilst still attracting the sub-cultures which it was
primarily aimed at doing.
Someone who would be likely to publish the magazine would be future plc, the reason behind
them wanting to publish my magazine would be that they currently only publish two music
magazines: Total Guitar/Guitarist – and if they chose to publish my magazine they would be able
to start publishing a magazine which would work with their target audiences for their other
magazines such as their Xbox/Playstation magazines which would cater for a wide audience but
would primarily be targeted at those of the teenage/young adult age range. They have proved that
they are able to attract a wide range of audience through their different styles of magazines,
however, because of the fact that the magazines that they produce which are music based aren’t
particularly well known as opposed to their technology based magazines there may be a reason
for them to not want to publish my magazine as it isn’t want they are about as they are primarily
based on technology and wouldn’t be experienced in the music industry.

However, due to the fact that they already produce Kerrang! magazine, they would potentially not be as suitable for producing my magazine due to the fact that they already have another Rock magazine which is successful and would be their primary focus – therefore, this would be a disadvantage if they was to produce my magazine. An advantage of letting Bauer Media publish my magazine would be that they have shown that they are able to target niche markets as they publish other magazines such as: GoFishing and heat – the latter of these two is a gossip magazine and therefore, they are easily able to attract the female audience which my magazine would primarily be aimed at. Similarly to the last point made, Bauer Media would also be able to attract a male audience as they have experience of doing this with the likes of MATCH! Magazine which is the biggest football magazine in the UK – with football being primarily associated with males I am able to say that they are able to attract a male audience and when this is combined with the female audience which would be directly targeted it can be said that my magazine would be able to go mass market.
  • 3. IPC Media are another big publishing company which would potentially consider publishing my music magazine. The reason for this is because of the fact that currently, the only big music magazine which they run is NME – this is primarily seen as alternative whilst still including features about Rock music in order to attract this large audience. Therefore, if they was to publish my magazine, an advantage of this would be that they could eliminate the rock music features from the NME magazine and solely focus on the alternative music which is already their main focus – as they include bands such as Arctic Monkeys/Oasis regularly. Then, if they published my document they would be able to still attract the rock audience but would be able to specifically cater for them with the launch of my new magazine and this would also attract other sub- cultures such as Emos and Goths – this would extend the reach of the magazine and therefore it can become instantly popular amongst the fan base which the likes of NME already has. However, IPC Media may not be willing to chance an already successful music magazine such as NME to launch a magazine like mine. The reasoning behind this would be that NME is already one of the most popular magazines on the market, and if they eliminated the element of Rock which they have been reporting on since the magazine has been released the magazine may not be as successful and thus they may not be willing to change something which is already successful. Like Bauer Media, IPC Media are a large media company that own/produce a number of magazines for both men and women and therefore, they would be able to attract both genders to buy the magazine and therefore my magazine would be able to appeal to a mass market whilst still attracting the sub-cultures which it was primarily aimed at doing.

Someone who would be likely to publish the magazine would be future plc, the reason behind them wanting to publish my magazine would be that they currently only publish two music magazines: Total Guitar/Guitarist – and if they chose to publish my magazine they would be able to start publishing a magazine which would work with their target audiences for their other magazines such as their Xbox/Playstation magazines which would cater for a wide audience but would primarily be targeted at those of the teenage/young adult age range. They have proved that they are able to attract a wide range of audience through their different styles of magazines, however, because of the fact that the magazines that they produce which are music based aren’t particularly well known as opposed to their technology based magazines there may be a reason for them to not want to publish my magazine as it isn’t want they are about as they are primarily based on technology and wouldn’t be experienced in the music industry.
