The document describes a student media group's TV news program for teenagers that challenges conventions of typical news programs. It discusses how the group researched existing news programs to find a gap for their target audience. They designed morning segments with upbeat language and topics relevant to teens. The group simplified scripts for accessibility but kept a professional tone. They also made the studio set feel relaxed by replacing chairs with a couch and coffee table instead of a desk to create a welcoming space.

4. • For my media product I believe that me and my group managed to
challenge, develop and use the codes and conventions of existing TV
News Programmes. We done a lot of research into existing Programmes
and realised that there is a gap in the market for teenagers. As a group we
wanted to design a Programme that is going to be suitable for older
teenagers which would need to be completed by challenging the codes and
conventions of existing News and changing the way that we present it to
our target audience.
• Through our research we learnt that teenagers were not watching the news
because they felt as if it was boring and they did not interest them to tune
back into the Programme and watch it again. We wanted to design a TV
News Programme that was going to target older teenagers by providing
them with information that is going to entertain them as well as educate
them with the stuff they need to know using different techniques
compared to other TV News Programmes such as the BBC.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media texts.
5. • To design our Logo and theme colours we done research into existing
morning TV News Programme and we came up with the result of
Good Morning Britain. From this programme we took inspiration of
how the codes and conventions were different to the standard news.
• We looked at things such as colours used, camera angles, studio set up
and how the presenters were dressed.
• We realised that we wanted to take inspiration ideas off this programme
because we could develop the codes and conventions to make them
work for our task. When we decided that our Programme was going to
be set in the morning we designed our Logo around that idea and
having the colours Blue, White and Yellow as the representation of the
sunrise in the morning over the water. These colours were then used as
the main theme colours throughout the programme to make sure that
the audience could gain recognition of our programme.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media texts.
6. • Our script writing was developed with the codes and conventions of
usual scripts as a guideline. We were able to make sure that compared
to TV News that is aimed towards adults our scripts were more
simplified so that it is easier for teenagers to understand words and
engage with what the presenter is saying. We wanted to make sure that
with the scripts they didn't have any slang in them and even though
they were being simplified that they still remained Professional and
formal.
• In my groups weather script we made sure that the presenter was
speaking in a positive tone adding phrases such as “look to get them
hats and scarf's out soon”. This phrase will make the audience feel
welcome with what they are watching and create a relationship
between themselves and the presenter.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media texts.
7. • My groups other scripts that we had to design were the Hard and Soft News stories.
• For our Soft News story we wanted to make sure that this is something that teenagers
are interested in so that they will tune in each day to find out different interesting
information. We decided that we should make a story about Old vs. New in
Birmingham Town Centre being the Old Water stones shop being transformed into a
New Apple Store. This will be something that would interest teenagers because it is
the age where technology is important to an individual and they will want to know
new places that they can visit in the local area.
• Our Hard News story we needed to make sure that this was a more serious topic but
also a story that is going to interest the audience and something that they personally
would want to know more about. We came to a decision that we were going to make a
story about Sixth Form and how it is now under pressure of closing. The target
audience would be interested in this story because the demographic we are aiming for
will be the age where they would have made the decision if they want to attend Sixth
Form or are unsure and by watching our News Programme they would be able to find
out the key information they need to know and they will want to tune in again to gain
more knowledge about stories based around them.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media texts.
8. • When doing our research and planning we realised the “usual” Studio set up of a TV News
Programme. The codes and conventions that we noticed were...
Desk
2 Chairs
Laptop
Glass
Paper
The codes and conventions of a normal TV News Programme seemed to us too formal to be
able to appeal to teenagers. We wanted to use the forms and challenge them by changing the
way we were going to set our Studio up. We made a decision that instead of chairs we were
going to replace them with a Blue sofa to match in with our theme colours. We also made a
change to the way in which we didn't want a big table in front of the presenters instead we
changed this to a coffee table with mugs instead of glasses on top of it. The reasons for this
decision was to make the audience feel as if they are welcome to watch the Programme. We
also made this choice to make the audience understand that the News we were providing is
more relaxed than others and is more suitable to what they want in TV News.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media texts.
9. I feel like as a group we were able to analyse
what the codes and conventions of a TV
News Programme were. From this we were
able to change, develop and challenge the
way in which they are going to be used in
our Programme. We have confident
reasons as to why we feel the changes were
made in benefit to our target audience and
from our feedback I feel as if we
completed the Task to the best of our
ability.
