Codes and Conventions
1. Language used for the Codes and Conventions of Television
News Programmes.
Piece to Camera- This is when the presenter/ on location reporter addresses the audience looking straight into
the lenses of the camera to gain a direct mode of address.
Voice Over- This is when there could be something such as a moving image or picture as well as statistics on the
screen for the audience to watch with a reporter speaking whilst this is playing to explain what is going on.
Outside Broadcaster- This is sometimes called the “On Location Reporter” this is when someone is broadcasting
a story from somewhere else other than the studio.
News Package- This is a pre- recorded news story that can be added to the broadcast when it is needed and the
story is ready to go out to the audience.
Vox Pops & Interviews- A vox pop is a short video of the public stating there opinion in a short but snappy
sentence. An interview contrasts this and it is when a reporter asks someone a set of questions in which they go
into detail.
Re-anactments- This is when there is no actual footage of something that has happened but the company think
that the audience will need visual representation and to reanact what happened but this must always be stated
that it is not actual footage.
Links back to the Studio- This will usually take place if an on location presenter broadcasts a certain piece for a
particular story in the news they will link back to the studio and the presenters that are there.
Studio Presenters- For the more used set time of news that has the higher audience it is known that there
would be two presenters for the news broadcast but in other times it can be one presenter.
