A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Evaluation question 1
1. Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
2. Throughout my cover, contents and double page spread only two fonts were used: Vonique 64 Regular and PT Sans
Regular. I used Vonique for the mastheads and questions and PT for all other small text this created a house style within
my product making it seem more professional, this adhere to the forms and conventions of magazines within the same
genre as mine. I used the same colour scheme throughout my product to again adhere to the forms and conventions of
my magazine, this colour scheme was grey, black and a blood red colour. I have also used white in there but mainly stuck
with my three main colours. I picked the grey and the black as these seem to be a frequent colour used together in other
magazines of the same genre. I picked the red as I think it gives the magazine a modern look and feel which is fitting with
my chosen genre and its recent boom into modern culture.
3. I used props such as a bandana when creating my images for my product.
I used this as many people associate bandanas with hip hop due to the late Tupac Shakur always sporting one around
his head. I went for a more gangsta look as this is a look I see a lot throughout existing magazines and is appealing to
my target audience. I also had him positioned in a threatening pose with no emotion on his face, I wanted him to look
like he does not care as this mentality has been associated with Hip Hop since it first came out. I also did this as it
would juxtapose his interview as in that I made him seem very caring throughout, and worried about many issues that
people believe Hip Hop influences like gun crime.
I used page number to correspond with the number on the contents page
to ensure my audience could navigate through my product with ease and
Know where everything is within my product. This is again adhering to the
conventions of a magazine as most if not all magazines have a contents page
allowing their audience to navigate the magazine and only read articles that
Interest them.
4. I took inspiration from multiple different magazine in terms of my layout. I wanted it to be minimalistic and modern
but still conventional to a music magazine. My main inspiration for my whole product is the XXL magazine I used these
as my inspiration as they are the most influential Hip Hop magazine in print at the moment reaching a mass audience
across the world.
I used this page in particular as the inspiration for my contents page as it portrays a minimalistic yet stylish
look which is similar to what I wanted when I began to create my product. The simple colour scheme paired
with the just one photo of an artist is what I really wanted for my magazine when creating it and I find that
using and already existing product as inspiration really helped me achieve what I wanted for my own
Product. I also used this as it helped me adhere to conventions of an existing and very popular magazine.
I use
I used many different cover pages from existing magazines as inspiration and guidelines for
my magazine but I found this one to be the most helpful as again it had very little text and
the text was arranged in a similar way to how I wanted mine. I think this helped me learn more
about how to created a magazine and how to create a successful cover page that adheres to the
conventions of a existing magazine.
