How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
I personally feel I haven’t stereotyped my magazine in an obvious way towards who the
targeted audience are, as I didn’t want to rule out any potential consumers of my media
product. However, I have produced my music magazine to appeal to a target audience,
like the boy pictured to the right of the page.
This boy isn’t the stereotypical expected alternative
rock fan, but I tried to make my magazine
appropriate for him as most alternative rock fans
aren’t obvious that they are in to this particular type
of music, due to it being an easier style of music that
quite a few alternative people listen to.
The typical stereotype of the targeted audience is
“emos” as the social group that people would
assume my target audience are. But I tried to keep
away from stereotyping my music magazine towards
this specific social group of people.
I have made sure my magazine appeals to someone
who is a keen concert or festival fan and specifically
aimed my music magazine towards these type of
music fans, as this targeted audience group would
have a keen interest for festivals as stereotypically
they tend to go. This is mainly due to the type of
festivals that are around in the UK alone due to most
of the festivals being aimed at alternative rock music
fans but also other genres of rock.
My media product, I have made sure it aims towards white males aged around 16-
21. To make sure it is appropriate to my target audience, I have made sure that my
mode of language is suitable and correct through the type of language that my target
audience would use on a day to day basis,
so to stereotype my media product towards them I
made sure the double page spread copy article
used their type of language but also a story that
would interest them otherwise they wouldn’t want
to read the main article that is featured within my
magazine, so it is really important that my media
product represents this social group.
I’ve made sure that my media product however,
doesn’t suit this type of white male to the right of
the page, this is because he looks like he is a
stereotypical indie music fan, therefore he wouldn’t
be interested in my music magazine. So I have kept
away from representing this type of social group
through my media product. So to not represent
these types of social groups I tried to not include
artists who these types of music fans would be
interested in.
