Nonprofit Photography: Ethics
and Approaches
Best practices and tips on ethics and approaches in
humanitarian photography for social impact.
The first moon landing. The Vietnamese ‘napalm girl’, running naked and in agony. The World
Trade Centers falling.
As we know, photography carries the power to inspire, educate, horrify and compel its viewers to
take action. Images evoke strong and often public emotions, as people frequently formulate their
opinions, judgments and behaviors in response to visual stimuli. Because of this, photography
can wield substantial control over public perception and discourse.
Moreover, photography in our digital age permits us to deliver complex information about
remote conditions which can be rapidly distributed and effortlessly processed by the viewer.
Recently, we’ve witnessed the profound impact of photography coupled with social media:
together, they have fueled political movements and brought down a corrupt government.
Photography can - and has - changed the course of history.
Ethical Considerations
Those who commission and create photography of marginalized populations to further an
organizations’ mission possess a tremendous responsibility. Careful ethical consideration should
be given to all aspects of the photography supply chain: its planning, creation, and distribution.
When planning a photography campaign, it is important to examine the motives for creating
particular images and their potential impact. Not only must a faithful, comprehensive visual
depiction of the subjects be created to avoid causing misconception, but more importantly, the
subjects’ dignity must be preserved. Words and images that elicit an emotional response by their
sheer shock value (e.g. starving, skeletal children covered in flies) are harmful because they
exploit the subjects’ condition in order to generate sympathy for increasing charitable donations
or support for a given cause. In addition to violating privacy and human rights, this so-called
'poverty porn’ is harmful to those it is trying to aid because it evokes the idea that the
marginalized are helpless and incapable of helping themselves, thereby cultivating a culture of
paternalism. Poverty porn is also detrimental because it is degrading, dishonoring and robs
people of their dignity. While it is important to illustrate the challenges of a population, one must
always strive to tell stories in a way that honors the subjects’ circumstances, and (ideally)
illustrates hope for their plight.
Legal issues
Legal issues are more clear cut when images are created or used in stable countries where legal
precedent for photography use has been established. Image use and creation becomes far more
murky and problematic in countries in which law and order is vague or even nonexistent.
Even though images created for no.
Documentary filmmaking is an art form that requires a delicate balance between storytelling. As a filmmaker, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are accurately representing the truth while also creating a compelling story truth and.

In the world of journalism, there are some stories that you simply have to critique
or censor. While this may seem counterintuitive to our industries need to maximize
truthtelling, it is important to remember that we have a huge impact on how the people
in our stories are perceived by the general population. For me, there are several red lines
that must be considered before publishing a story. First and foremost, it is important to
ensure accuracy in your reporting. If any material, photograph or otherwise, is used in a
manner which will misinform or mislead your audience then is not appropriate. It is also
considered unethical by the standards set out by most professional journalists. An
example would be in the code of ethics as set out by the Society of Professional
Journalist. According to this code of conduct a journalist should, “…Make certain that
headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound
bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight
incidents out of context” (Jaquette, 2007). To misrepresent an issue is the same as lying
about an issue. That is something that no honorable and professional journalist should
do. This is especially true when it comes to photographs. They are easily manipulated by
a savvy mind.
Second, I feel that children should be given special consideration when reporting
on a story. They have their whole lives ahead of them and we all know what one bad
news story could do to a person’s future. Imagine what that kind of negative publicity
would do to a child. It would shape their future in ways we could not account for nor
imagine.
While lastly, I feel it is important to give special consideration to those who
cannot defend themselves. Much like children, the old and infirmed are in considerable
danger of being used and manipulated by a savvy reporter. Of course, there are
exceptions to these moral and ethical considerations. Some of you may be old enough to
recall Geraldo Rivera's exposé documentary of the Willowbrook State School. In it, Mr.
Rivera utilized shocking and horrifying footage of the conditions inside this mental
health facility. While these images may not have been the best representation of these
poor individuals, it did serve to shock the public into taking action. Eventually, these
individuals were removed from this hellhole and given the proper medical treatment
and facilities that they deserved as American citizens. Overall, it was only by crossing
that thin red line that Mr. Rivera was able to affect change in an otherwise complacent
and apathetic nation.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

6. Five Core Principles of Journalism
1. Truth and Accuracy
Journalists cannot always guarantee ‘truth’, but getting the facts
right is the cardinal principle of journalism. We should always strive
for accuracy,
2. Independence
journalists must be independent voices; we should not act, formally
or informally, on behalf of special interests whether political,
corporate or cultural
6
7. 3. Fairness and Impartiality
Most stories have at least two sides. While there is no obligation to present every side in
every piece, stories should be balanced and add context. but impartial reporting builds
trust and confidence.
4. Humanity
Journalists should do no harm. What we publish or broadcast may be hurtful, but we
should be aware of the impact of our words and images on the lives of others.
5. Accountability
A sure sign of professionalism and responsible journalism is the ability to
hold ourselves accountable. When we commit errors we must correct
them and our expressions of regret must be sincere not cynical.
7
8. Photojournalism as a profession
Cliff Edom (1976), one of the most well respected
photojournalism educators in the United States, credited Frank
Mott, dean of the Journalism School at the University of Missouri,
With inventing the term, photojournalism. In 1942, Mott helped
establish a separate academic sequence for photojournalism
instruction. For the first time, photojournalism was considered "as
important to the field of communication" as its word equivalent.

9. In today’s world, 2.3 million photographs are taken every
minute.
The author’s says that the image itself is a powerful medium in
which people openly and naively believe

truths, expose wrongdoing and neglect,
Inspire hope and understanding and connect people
around the globe through the language of visual
understanding.
10

Before creating a photo illustration,
photographers, photo editors and designers
must obtain approval from a Senior Editor
