The University Of New York
Allen and Dadgar (2012) utilized data on 22, 962 incoming college freshmen who were part of the
City University of New York s (CUNY) College Now program and had enrolled in a CUNY campus
within 15 months after high school graduation. This data was merged with data from the New York
City (NYC) Department of Education which included all high school students who had been peers of
the students in the College Now dual enrollment program. The NYC Department of Education data
included extensive demographic information and test score data as well information on institutional
differences between high schools. This rich data set enabled comparison between students who had
participated in dual enrollment and comparable peers who had not participated. In order to control for
preexisting differences that were not reflected in the data set this study used a quasi experimental
analysis called the difference in differences. The results of this study confirm the work of other recent
quantitative analyses which have shown higher GPA s and reduced time to graduation for dual
enrollment students as compared to their peers. The authors suggest that this study confirms the
importance of academic momentum by demonstrating that students who are able to gain credits before
starting college also earn more credits once they are enrolled in college. This study adds to the
evidence that dual enrollment has a positive impact on postsecondary GPA and time to graduation.

Essay On Gas Sensor Technology
Gas sensor technology is very appreciating in industries and defense since it possesses high sensitivity
in gas detection. The most important challenges in transportable devices are sensitivity, selectivity,
durability and low power consumption. To solve the selectivity problems, GBISs have been
introduced. These latter are able to identify unknown gas ionization breakdown voltage. To reduce the
breakdown voltage CNT GBISs are employed [6] [12] while others studies used MWCNT with a
reduction of 100 450V.Nevertheless, these CNT GBISs are exposed to corona discharges which lead
to heat generation and may affect the gas ionization breakdown. For uniform fields, the breakdown
characteristics are explained by Townsend s criteria (equ 1) [1]. ... Show more content on

Thus the objective of this paper is to overcome this limitation by providing a simple and low cost
fabrication. Nonorganic species ionization feature is also required.
Freestanding nanowire arrays are good field ionization sources since they present high aspect ratio and
density. The template assisted electromechanical method is an easy and costless technique but presents
limitations as the incorporated nanowires arrays bundle or collapse during template removal. To
prevent this a PAA growth AuNWs were vertically aligned and embedded at a miniature cylindrical
cell with a flat cathode. A number of tests gases have been used to perform the field ionization s tests
with deviating low ionization threshold voltages (Vi) as results.

Fig. 1(b) shows the electron tunneling into the valence band with an increase of the effective work

distance now depends on the amount of band bending whose expression is shown by equation (4).
Even with zero fields, authors [19],[24] [27] have demonstrated that impurities and dangling bonds
may impact the band bending potential. With an applied field reduction of the band, bending is
observed with a tunneling above the Fermi level even with an absence of inversion. [25] states that the
critical distance is controlled by the changing the Fermi level. Note that the small critical is yield by a

Galileo Galilei During The Scientific Revolution
Galileo once stated, All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover
them. Galileo Galilei was a well known astronomer and scientist during the Scientific Revolution, a
time period where thought and reason the old philosophies, who made many important contributions
to astronomy and physics. As a major contribution to astronomy, Galileo proved the heliocentric
theory, a theory which stated that the sun was the center of the universe and all objects moved around
it. He also developed new physics theories which included the universal law of acceleration and
created new inventions to enhance daily human life. Galileo Galilei was an important individual who

He was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564 to Vincenzo Galilei, a well known musician and
music theorist, and Giulia Ammannati. When he was 19, Galileo attended the University of Pisa as a
medical student and soon became fascinated with mathematics and physics and was exposed to the
Aristotelian view of the world, which at that time, he did support. In 1604, he refined his theories on
motion and falling objects, and developed the universal law of acceleration, X=〖at〗^2, which all
objects obeyed. That same year, Galileo began to openly express his support of the Copernican theory
that stated that the earth and the planets revolved around the sun. In 1610, he published a small
booklet, The Starry Messenger, revealing his discoveries that the moon was not flat and smooth, but a
sphere with mountains and craters. In addition, Galileo discovered that Venus had phases like the
moon, proving that it rotated around the sun, and Jupiter had revolving moons, which didn t revolve
around the earth. For the next couple of decades, Galileo published Discourse on Bodies in Water and
Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which refuted many of the Catholic Church s
teaching and as a result, Galileo was called in front of the Catholic Church and was convicted of
heresy. Despite being put under house arrest for the rest of his life, he continued to publish books
about his life from his house. Galileo died on January 8, 1642 near Florence, Italy from a fever and
heart palpations ( Galileo Web). Despite going against the geocentric theory, Galileo laid the
foundation for the Catholic Church to open their doors to new

Essay on Differences between Lives in Solingen and Phoenix
Differences between Lives in Solingen and Phoenix
As I arrived at Phoenix in September of 1999, I was very excited to see this famous city and it s
country and to get to know everything about it. But with the time I realized that Phoenix is not more
different than my town in Germany, Solingen. It s a not a big city but it is a very beautiful one with
many small streets and small houses around them. I had even the impression that the life in Germany
was more exciting than in Phoenix. Now I m living in Phoenix for over one year and I can say now
that there are many differences between those two countries which had a big influence at our further
lives. I m talking about differences which you can t notice if you go there for a ... Show more content

the stores or places where you could have go out were pretty far away from our apartment. Mostly I
needed a car to go out somewhere. The buses are stationed only on few places and they arrive in very
long intervals. So after a time, we realized that we had to buy a car. In contrast to Phoenix, during our
time in Solingen, we used the car mostly for longer trips. The whole city was connected with bus lines
and they were coming to the bus stations every ten minutes. If we had to go somewhere in the city, we
used mostly the buses. We saved our gas money and were there always on time.
While in Phoenix you have problems to find the time to go out with your friends, in Solingen, I was
most of the time able to plan something at a short time. Every day after the school, I went to the
downtown of Solingen with some friends or alone and we were walking through the streets full of
stores and joking around. I did this almost every day in the week. On the weekends there were many
places to go out with friends like many clubs and cafe s in Solingen or in the bigger towns next to us
like Dusseldorf or Cologne. This cities are famous for their streets to go out there and have a good
time. People from all West Germany came over to these streets to have fun. So it was never boring
even in a small town like Solingen. I could always do something if I was bored.
A another good example thing that verifies the deference between these unlike cities is having a job.

Rhetorical Devices In Eleven By Cisneros
Throughout the story Eleven , Cisneros demonstrates to the reader that Rachel despises her eleventh
birthday. In doing so, Cisneros uses rhetorical devices such as tone, simile, dialogue, and repetition.
These rhetorical devices serve to further insinuate how Rachel feels about her eleventh birthday. For
instance, Rachel uses simile to compare her conflicted emotions to the rattling of pennies in a tin Band
Aid box. Furthermore, Cisneros displays tone and repetition within the story in order to depict Rachel
s attitude. The overall use of rhetorical devices within the story aid the reader in comprehending
Cisneros s characterization of Rachel s feelings. In paragraph five, it vividly states, Only today I wish

I Have A Dream Speech Analysis
54 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his famous I have a dream speech , which along with
Lincoln s Gettysburg address are examples of the best oratory works. The two speeches were critical
to the growth and development of America. They come from two men from different backgrounds and
different times but with one common goal, equality for all.
Standing on the same spot as Lincoln did five score years ago, King preached similar themes of
justice, equality and freedom. Lincolns speech was a eulogy to those who died in the battle of
Gettysburg, at the time America was at civil war. Lincoln spoke to a crowd of thousands to inspire
them to keep fighting the war. In comparison to King, who stood before a crowd of over 200,000
people at the Lincoln memorial and shared his dream of a new future for black Americans. The
context of each address has a profound impact upon their purpose and qualities. One distinct quality of
Lincolns speech is that it is structured in chronological order, with each of the three separate
paragraphs encompassing the past, present and future. This is a device used by Lincoln to build up his
audience s attention to the speeches climatic end. This can be compared to Kings structural approach,
where he uses a ladder technique to construct his points in order of ascending importance. Once again
ending strongly with the line: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty we are free at last! Both
methods of structure of the speeches assist in

Motifs And Motifs In Macbeth
In literature, one might notice certain images, objects, or ideas recurring throughout the piece. These
are called motifs, and unsurprisingly, many motifs are present in the works of William Shakespeare.
There are many themes that Shakespeare conveys through motif in his play Macbeth. One of these is
that breaking the Great Chain of Being results in misery and disorder, but the natural order tends to
eventually recover. Another is that violence is morally ambiguous and can be good or evil depending
only on who the violence affects. Finally, Shakespeare shows that what one perceives as reality is not
necessarily reality, especially under the effects of guilt and or paranoia. From reading Macbeth, one
can easily pick up on these messages: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, towards the end of the play, the natural order begins to return to normal. Hearing that
Birnam wood was coming to Dunsinane Macbeth remarks I pull in resolution and begin
To doubt th equivocation of the fiend
That lies like truth. Fear not, till Birnam wood
Do come to Dunsinane ; and now a wood
Comes toward Dunsinane. Arm, arm, and out!
If this which he avouches does appear,
There is nor flying hence nor tarrying here.
I gin to be aweary of the sun,
And wish th estate o th world were now undone.
Ring the alarum bell! Blow, wind! Come, wrack!
At least we ll die with harness on our back (V.v.47 58).
This quote draws parallels between Macbeth and a horse, first with the metaphor of him pulling in
resolution. Through this metaphor, Macbeth suggests a fear that allowing the horse of his confidence
to be free was a mistake. He mentions later that at least [he ll] die with harness on [his] back (V.v.58),
which shows that Macbeth is returning to the battlefield where the natural order says he should be.
Rather than rule, Macbeth s nature is to obey commands, as both a soldier and a horse does.
Shakespeare emphasizes the unnatural nature of Macbeth s rule once again over here, as Birnam Wood
moving to Dunsinane is an event that does not occur naturally. Shakespeare demonstrates through his
use of these two nature motifs to enhance the idea that a disturbance to the natural order causes great

Adversity In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
Colson Whitehead once said, Let the broken glass be broken glass, let it splinter into smaller pieces
and dust and scatter. Let the cracks between things widen until they are no longer cracks but the new
places for things . In the memoir The Glass Castle, author Jeannette Walls faces despair and turmoil as
a result of her impoverished and dysfunctional upbringing. As Jeannette grows up, she watches her
father Rex fail to reach his full potential and his dream to build a Glass Castle shatter as his
alcoholism takes control. Aware of the devastation her father was causing, she begins to slowly lose
faith in him but doesn t fail to escape her destructive household and pursue her dreams of becoming a
journalist. Due to her parent s lack of parenting and being forced to fend for herself, Jeannette
developed a sense of responsibility to care for others and make amends to improve the family s
lifestyle. Despite the turbulence and destruction her parents had caused over the years, unlike her
father, Jeannette was able to find the strength to overcome obstacles, developing characteristics that
ultimately lead her to achieving her dream, thus illustrating that adversity has the power to shape one s
identity.
While her father s dismisses his destructive nature, Jeannette becomes conscious of his actions which
motivates her to make amends in hopes of leaving their desolate life. Instead of getting help for his
childhood trauma, Rex immerses himself in alcohol causing him to become

The Importance Of Taking Risks In Beowulf
De Armas, Albert M. Ascorbe English 4 P.7 10/15/17 The Importance of Taking Risks Beowulf set his
ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of
Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together
and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he
dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl
despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we
become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that
point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our
sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one s boundaries, move
forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks. Beowulf sees the
need of taking risks when he must help his friend across the sea in bringing peace to his land.
Hrothgar s kingdom, Denmark, is being terrorized by the vicious, bloody thirsty demons, Grendel and
his mother. Sailing across the sea, putting his own life at risk for others is an immense risk that can
certainly lead to Beowulf s demise. The Geats, who idolize Beowulf, see this risk but can comprehend

The Four Dimensions Of Cultural Values
Understanding the differences and similarities inherent in other cultures may provide opportunities
when working with individuals (or groups) who may have very different or similar cultural values.
Through the work of many people, more is known about other cultures values than perhaps ever
before. Geert Hofstede is one of these people, and his work has allowed for a greater understanding of
cultural values across a wide range of dimensions. His work has grown from four dimensions to six,
and as more information is gathered this will perhaps increase as well. In the first section, the first four
dimensions of cultural values will be discussed briefly. Next, all six dimensions will be given for the
United States (US) and Japan, and will be considered according to the highest and lowest differences
between dimensions of these two countries cultural values. In addition, considerations for applying
motivational theories toward individuals from these two countries will also be discussed. Lastly, a
single dimension will be selected for each country and a recommendation given accordingly that could
help improve performance.
Four Dimensions of Cultural Values Latham (2012) outlines four of the broad categories of Hofstede s
cultural dimensions, including low high power distance, individualism collectivism, masculinity
femininity, and uncertainty avoidance, which will be discussed here. Power distance can be thought of
as the extent in which members of a culture accept inequality

Ingsoc s Use Of Propaganda In The Book 1984 By George Orwell
In the book 1984, which takes place in Oceania, all people are constantly under surveillance by
Ingsoc. Ingsoc is Oceania s government. Also the widespread use of propaganda is quite evident in
this book. Surveillance and propaganda are used to control, watch, and influence the peoples of
Oceania. Ingsoc uses surveillance to watch and listen to every person living in Oceania. One quote
makes this very evident and the quote is: Big Brother is watching you. Big brother is watching you
means just what it sounds like. Ingsoc the government knows what each person is up to at all times
because they are watching the peoples. In Oceania each house comes with a telescreen that watches
and listens to each of the families daily lives. The telescreens sometimes make noises when Ingsoc

people they are watching them so they have full control, Ingsoc says they just want to assure everyone

The Importance Of Foreign Aid
Foreign aid is given to selected developing countries, and is necessary in order to protect the people
and build a stable society. Australia is part of the worldwide foreign aid commitment and plans to give
$3.9 billion over 2017 and 2018. Australians believe everyone should live with basic human rights
which is why we give aid, and help countries by contributing money, food and resources. The main
types of aid are humanitarian aid, which is disaster/emergency relief and development aid, which is a
long term commitment between nations. Australian aid is mainly focused on development aid, and
helps nations worldwide. Interestingly, 90% of Australia s foreign aid goes to Asia Pacific countries
such as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This gives Australia a stronger relationship with regional
nations, providing the country with a strong relation, trading partner and partner in defence. Aid is a
polarizing issue that divides the nation due to the two differing views on Australia giving aid, should
the country give foreign aid or not? A strong foreign aid program is vital for Australia to build
successful relations and regional security.
A large section of the population believes that Australia should reduce the amount of aid given. The

Characteristics Of Satan In Paradise Lost
In Paradise Lost the character of Satan is created by Milton. There are many characters of Satan in
literature, and over the creation of each Satan, he as a character has evolved. It is thought by John
Carey that Milton observed the former characters of Satan and used them as inspiration to influence
his new character as Satan. Milton created Satan as the author of evil and created him by himself.
Satan is the main character throughout Paradise Lost that starts the story and puts events into motion.
As Milton created his Satan he focused on strong characteristics of epic heroes and rhetoric. In
Paradise Lost , Milton uses select qualities of an epic hero to be displayed as an epic hero himself.
To become an epic hero the character must travel over vast settings to meet the criteria to be an epic
hero. Milton created the story in a religious sense which can be seen in the setting too. The setting
consists of Earth, Hell, Heaven, and the space between them. Heaven and Hell are complete polar
opposites which is in relation to the distance between them. The space between Heaven and Hell is
empty space and Earth. Earth represents the middle ground between perfect and imperfect. Satan starts
his journey in Hell and must travel through Hell to the far gates out of Hell. And thrice threefold the

Analysis Of Caprice No. 24 By Niccolo Paganini
Caprice No. 24 By Niccolo Paganini
Nicoló Paganini was a famous Italian violinist born in the midst of The Enlightenment. He wrote a set
of 24 Capriccis for the violin in the early 1800s, the most famous of which is the final caprice, simply
referred to as Caprice No. 24 . The final caprice exemplifies Paganini s bold style and technique,
which was a natural byproduct of the musical liberation that took place during the Enlightenment. His
work would inspire musicians for centuries to come.
I chose Caprice No. 24 largely because it is one of the most well known piece by Paganini. In present
day, the famous neoclassical guitar player, Yngwie Malmsteen a virtuoso in his own right and a
musician that I greatly admire has cited Paganini as a source of inspiration for his music. I wanted to
investigate this claim. I had heard small portions of Caprice No. 24 over the years, but my first
exposure to the piece in its entirety was through a studio recorded, 2013 performance by violinist
David Garrett, accompanied by an orchestra.
My first impression was that I was listening to a rock star. I had a notable physical reaction to the
music; I felt a rush of adrenaline and my heart rate increased. The music was fast paced and intense
undoubtedly physically and mentally demanding on Garrett. I am a pianist myself, and I felt a sense of
empathy. I was exhausted on his behalf by simply hearing his talented performance. The music would
slow down in some parts, only to pick back up with even more intensity and speed. The music aroused
a familiar sense of pressure, such as the pressure to complete a difficult yet important task in a short
period of time. The pressure and difficulty build to near unbearable proportions until the work is
finally finished, and dissipates into the euphoria of accomplishment. If that scenario had a theme song,
it could be Paganini s Caprice No. 24 . The music was passionate, chaotic, and ultimately satisfying. I
felt that I had witnessed true mastery of the art of the violin in both Paganini s written work and
Garrett s performance.
Caprice No. 24 is a violin solo written in the key of A minor, lending a dark and sinister quality to the
melody. The word caprice is an Italian word which

reconfirms Don Giovanni s role as the trickster, and reconfirms Don Elvira s role as a woman who

Liberal Democracies Vs. Liberal Democracy Essay
Liberal democracies, are defined as the system in which governmental body operate under the
principle of individual rights and work to protect them regardless of religion, sect, ethnicity etc.
Liberal democracies are thought to be secular in nature and generally do not account for religions or
ethnicities rather they promote a certain nationalistic perspective throughout the state. Laws are made
through majority vote in the parliament and are meant to be logical in nature rather than derived from
sources like religion, culture, traditions etc. However, in some parts of the world such as Middle East,
people value their sectarian or ethnic identities more than nationalistic values. So a debate emerges
around the openness of democratic system to religion. Although Ethnocracy offers short term solution
for some countries like Syria, yet the system should be based on liberal democracy that work on the
principle of State nation that protects core values of democracy and account for religions as well.
Ethnocracy is a system that only allows political parties based on ethnic, religion or sectarian
identities to participate in the elections and individual choices are ignored. This system is applicable in
some countries like Lebanon where after widespread conflict between different groups, it has been
authorized that three parties based on Christians, Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims can only
participate in elections and people have to tie with any of these groups. There are quotas

St. Croix s Complicated Potential for Sustainable Island Agriculture
History and culture as obstacles to a sustainable local food economy.
Located in the Caribbean Sea, Saint Croix has a sub tropical island climate and is the largest of the
U.S. Virgin Island(USVI) territories with the greatest percentage of arable land. Little seasonal
temperature variability, low humidity, and a year round growing season has historically offered the
island significant advantages for agricultural development and production. Even with seasonal rainfall
and periods of drought, the island is extremely capable of supporting a wide array of tropical fruits.

Is Cyberbullying as Pervasive and as Dangerous as Physical...
Making nick names by classmates, posting secret photos online by colleagues, or even being slandered
by strangers, these common experiences are types of cyberbullying. Lots of people have such
cyberbullying experiences because it occurs more frequently than before. More specifically,
cyberbullying is the use of the Internet, cell phones, or other electronic communication devices to
spread harmful or embarrassing information in the form of text, photos or videos about another
person. Cyberbullying is worse than physical bullying because of its serious consequences, and the
person who suffers the cyberbullying would be hurt mentally by harmful messages, which is more
difficult to cure than physical injury.

Tom s family was devastated by the cyberbullying because they were clueless about the anonymous
offenders, and these offenders did not being punished accordingly, so the cyberbullying will continue
to spread and form a vicious circle.
More importantly, cyberbullying has deeper influence than physical bullying because it may involve
in a wide range of audiences within short time period and give high pressure to victims
psychologically. For the traditional physical bullying, it refers to the physical altercations or perhaps
verbal abuse from others, so victims of traditional physical bullying might feel safe at home, which
can be limited the bullying in the place. Even though someone is injured due to physical bullying, the
wound is curable, and won t leave a trace. However, the cyberbullying is a kind of bullying popping
up in cyber space, so the victims can be attacked from anywhere at any time through the network
(Yalda, Psychology in Action), so the victim would leave an incurable shadow. In 2006, an American
Educational Research Association study shows that the number of people who prefer to harass other
online was twice as the number of people who would bully others face to face (Scott). Some
researchers made further analysis with 7200 U.S. 6 10th grade students and shows that that The cyber

The Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program
Businesses in recent times are interested in being sustainable. They want to reduce their impact on the
environment, but still continue to operate and fulfill their obligations to their stockholders by making a
profit. Prior to the current trend of environmental interest, certain industries had negatively affected
the environment in the course of doing normal business. As a result, governments have enacted laws
that limited the amount of pollution that a firm can release. One such law is the Greenhouse Gas
Reporting Program, which in a nutshell, stipulates mandatory reporting of greenhouse gases released
by certain firms. In regards to the program, what is it, and what is its purpose? How does this program
relate to accounting, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The data will be used to help create laws and policies that further protect the environment against
additional degradation. What are greenhouse gases, and why does this program focus on them, instead
of other pollutants? According to an article, greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation. This
absorption of heat in the atmosphere over time is responsible in the increase in the overall temperature
of the planet, and this is known as the greenhouse effect (Lallanilla, 2015). Basically, this program
focuses more on greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, because the effects associated with the
greenhouse effect will negatively affect the air quality and atmosphere of the entire planet, not just in
the United States. Overall, this program is meant to get companies to be mindful of their
environmental impact for the sake of the planet, and to promote sustainability.
How exactly does this program relate to accounting? This program is meant to promote sustainability
and get firms to watch their environmental impact. In its June of 2015 report, the AICPA cites the
trend of sustainable operations and states that CPAs are well positioned to offer expertise that
organizations can use to implement, track, and verify their sustainability efforts. (The State of, 2015).
In order for a firm to commit to sustainable operations, they must make changes in the way that

Fatal Accident Driver Has Long Legal History
Investigators are still piecing together why an 18 wheeler slammed into the back of a car and school
bus in Lake Butler yesterday, causing seven children to die. The truck that was involved in the
accident was owned and operated by Crete Carrier Corp. It s a trucking company that has a pretty
good reputation for safety nationwide.
But the driver who was behind the wheel had anything but that. The WESH 2 I Team discovered that
he has a long history of problems with the law. According to driving records obtained by the I Team,
Alvin Wilkerson has been cited for eight traffic violations since 1995, including two speeding tickets
and two seat belt violations. He s also been cited twice for driving with a suspended or revoked

Pros And Cons Of Valentine s Day
February February...there s a lot of things I think about in this month. The first thing I think about is
Valentine s Day, with all the love in the air. Most importantly, the second thing I think about is Black
History. In everybody s mind this is the shortest month of the year, it s about love, and the
appreciation of African Americans. What is Valentine s Day? Valentine s Day is going out your way to
do something for a loved one. But why should people have to really show their love for someone in a
certain month, on a certain day? Love should always be expressed everyday. Valentine s Day was
created by a man named St. Valentine. There are many stories on how this became such a big holiday,
but one story says that he was imprisoned and he wrote the first Valentine to the love of his life
because he was going to die, ending the letter with From your Valentine. Later in life, it became more
about love because people during the middle ages began to realize that during the middle of February
is which the 14th, the birds mating season had beginned which resulted in love. But, I feel that
Valentine s Day has its pros and cons. It is about being loved by someone and being able to express
how you feel towards a loved one. This day is usually men going out their way to do something
special for their significant other. Sometimes it is the women doing something special, but the men are
usually the ones to do something special first. Some people have a really good Valentine s

Risk Management Plays a Vital Role in Healthcare...
Risk managers are a vital lifeline in the healthcare organization. If this organization had an active risk
manager in place, many of the events leading up to the infant losing its life could have been prevented.
There are many steps that a risk manager must take once a risk is identified, this paper will walk
through the steps that are required after the risk happened. A risk manager plays an important role with
the events in this infant case study. Risk managers hold a wide variety of responsibilities that include:

Once the root cause analysis and action plan have been prepared and submitted to The Joint
Commission, they will decide if the plans are adequate. If the determination that an event is
reviewable under the Sentinel Event Policy occurs more than forty five calendar days following the
known occurrence of the event, the hospital s response will be due in fifteen calendar days. If the
hospital has failed to submit a root cause analysis within an additional 45 days following its due date,
its accreditation decision may be impacted (Sentinel Events, n.d). Once a sentinel event takes place,
the next step is to perform a root cause analysis. Root cause analysis is a systematic process used to
address problems or non conformance to identify the source of the problem. A root cause is the
underlying breakdown or failure of a process when resolved, prevents the problem from recurring
(Connelly, 2012). As soon as the event happens the root analysis should begin and should include
everyone involved. The team should list in chronological order all the steps related to the error. A
cause and effect diagram is useful to visualize the steps that lead up to the event. After identifying the
root cause, the team can develop prevention measures and plans for evaluation known as the action

Introduction: Iron is an essential element in the human body. It can be found in the hemoglobin and
transferrin of the bloodstream, and in myoglobin in muscle tissue. The main purpose of iron is to
transfer oxygen within the body. To gain iron, humans must consume a diet that consist abundantly of
iron such as leaf vegetables, fish, beans, etc. Absorption of iron is especially important because less
than 15% of iron in daily diets are absorbed and used (Jacobs 1971). The formation of iron (II) occurs

Because synthesis requires multiple steps to make a desired reaction, the yield is lower than other
synthesis. On the first day, if the substances have a significant amount of precipitate, then the
substance will require a greater number of drops of sodium hydroxide than substances with an
insignificant amount of substrate. On the second day, if the starting reactants affect the yield of the
product then obtaining solid copper from a salt will result in a greater yield. If aluminum foil is the
limiting reactant of the experiment, then the percent yield will increase as the amount of foil increases.
Materials/Methods:
Project A, Day 1
In Part 1, 50 milliliters of 5% sodium hydroxide solution was obtained and observed in a 100 mL
beaker and 30 milliliters of pH 2 dissolved iron solution was also obtained and observed in a 50 mL
beaker. To observe the behavior of dissolved iron with sodium hydroxide, 5 milliliters of pH 2
dissolved iron was transferred to a large test tube. Drops of 5% solution of sodium hydroxide were
slowly added and monitored for physical changes. A glass stir rod was used to transfer a small amount
of solution onto pH paper in between drops of 5% solution of sodium hydroxide until the solution had
a pH of 8.
In Part II, 5 milliliters of dissolved iron was placed in a large test tube. To test the effect of different
additive substances on dissolved iron, .2 grams of methionine was added to

Essay on The Dangers of Tanning Booths

something you thought was a beauty mark. You come to find that you have malignant melanoma, a
deadly form of skin cancer at the age of 27. After doing some research it was obvious that going to

They confuse people about the real risks of indoor tanning. Many people with Vitamin D deficiency
heard that brief exposure to UV light was good for them. The tanning industry ran with that. They
used this as an advertising claim and lured many people inside. Such carefully crafted claims are what
convince people that tanning beds are safe.
Another false claim that the tanning industry advertises is that tanning beds prevent cancers, such as
prostate, lung, breast, colon, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers. These claims, based on research
conducted by William Grant, PhD, a NASA scientist whose work is partially funded by the Indoor
Tanning Association, were dismissed by the dermatology community. It is dangerous to mislead the
public into thinking sunlight is a safe and effective cure for other health conditions, says Raymond L.
Cornelison Jr., MD, president of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Tanning salons turn their attention toward cancer prevention and turn their backs on causing skin
cancer. Lavine wrote, The JNCI review noted that indoor tanning can increase a fair skinned
individual s risk of developing melanoma by 55%. And it can take a mere 10 indoor tanning sessions
to cause precancerous DNA damage, reports a recent review study by a Kings College London
researcher (Lavine). Melanoma is not the only form of skin cancer. Tanning beds play a role in the
formation of other skin cancers as

The Ring Of The Bell On The Door
She gazed out of the café window and watched the rain make paths down the frosted glass. The
steaming cup of tea warmed her freezing fingers. Everything is cold, she thought as she focused on her

smell of bergamot pervading her senses and warming her, if only for a moment. The image of his eyes

deep voice, thick with emotion as if he had recently been crying, broke through her reverie. Startled,
she looked up into the same eyes that she had just been brooding on. A thrill of panic, tinged with
desire, shot through her and then was gone. What do you want, Tae? she asked indifferently, breaking
their focus on each other by looking away. Please... I didn t mean to hurt you last night. I m sorry, he
said as he plopped down across from her, his bangs falling into his eyes. I didn t know you felt that

Terrorism Between Iraq And The United States Essay
After the gulf wars, a ceasefire was negotiated between the United Nations coalition and Iraq. During
the ceasefire, the United Nations became aware that Iraq had started a biological warfare program in
the 1980s, as well as a chemical warfare program. Upon further investigation, they found that these
programs had not continued after the war. As a result, the United States main focus moving forward
was the removal of the Saddam regime, their official foreign policy for years to come focused on this
goal. With the suspicions that Saddam Hussein had the abilities to acquire weapons of mass
destruction, the Bush administration going as far as to claim he already had them, the United States
and other countries began devising a plan of action. These countries strongly believed that Iraq was a
treat to its neighbors and the rest of the world, and that the only solution was to invade Iraq. The
United States invading Iraq in 2003 was a turning point in the reason why relationship between Iraq
and the United States is the way it is today.
In August of 2002, the Bush administration s position about Iraq had changed significantly. Prior to
this point, the United States and other western countries had been arming Iraq with weapons of every
type. The fact the United States and other countries had been arming Iraq with weapons, shows how
little they considered Iraq to be a threat. This quickly changed. A debate on invading Iraq, held by the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, created

  • 2. The University Of New York Allen and Dadgar (2012) utilized data on 22, 962 incoming college freshmen who were part of the City University of New York s (CUNY) College Now program and had enrolled in a CUNY campus within 15 months after high school graduation. This data was merged with data from the New York City (NYC) Department of Education which included all high school students who had been peers of the students in the College Now dual enrollment program. The NYC Department of Education data included extensive demographic information and test score data as well information on institutional differences between high schools. This rich data set enabled comparison between students who had participated in dual enrollment and comparable peers who had not participated. In order to control for preexisting differences that were not reflected in the data set this study used a quasi experimental analysis called the difference in differences. The results of this study confirm the work of other recent quantitative analyses which have shown higher GPA s and reduced time to graduation for dual enrollment students as compared to their peers. The authors suggest that this study confirms the importance of academic momentum by demonstrating that students who are able to gain credits before starting college also earn more credits once they are enrolled in college. This study adds to the evidence that dual enrollment has a positive impact on postsecondary GPA and time to graduation. Academic Impact of Dual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Gas Sensor Technology Gas sensor technology is very appreciating in industries and defense since it possesses high sensitivity in gas detection. The most important challenges in transportable devices are sensitivity, selectivity, durability and low power consumption. To solve the selectivity problems, GBISs have been introduced. These latter are able to identify unknown gas ionization breakdown voltage. To reduce the breakdown voltage CNT GBISs are employed [6] [12] while others studies used MWCNT with a reduction of 100 450V.Nevertheless, these CNT GBISs are exposed to corona discharges which lead to heat generation and may affect the gas ionization breakdown. For uniform fields, the breakdown characteristics are explained by Townsend s criteria (equ 1) [1]. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus the objective of this paper is to overcome this limitation by providing a simple and low cost fabrication. Nonorganic species ionization feature is also required. Freestanding nanowire arrays are good field ionization sources since they present high aspect ratio and density. The template assisted electromechanical method is an easy and costless technique but presents limitations as the incorporated nanowires arrays bundle or collapse during template removal. To prevent this a PAA growth AuNWs were vertically aligned and embedded at a miniature cylindrical cell with a flat cathode. A number of tests gases have been used to perform the field ionization s tests with deviating low ionization threshold voltages (Vi) as results. Literature review Fig. 1(b) shows the electron tunneling into the valence band with an increase of the effective work function, and the expression of the critical distance changes as shown by equation (3). The critical distance now depends on the amount of band bending whose expression is shown by equation (4). Even with zero fields, authors [19],[24] [27] have demonstrated that impurities and dangling bonds may impact the band bending potential. With an applied field reduction of the band, bending is observed with a tunneling above the Fermi level even with an absence of inversion. [25] states that the critical distance is controlled by the changing the Fermi level. Note that the small critical is yield by a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Galileo Galilei was a well known astronomer and scientist during the Scientific Revolution, a time period where thought and reason the old philosophies, who made many important contributions to astronomy and physics. As a major contribution to astronomy, Galileo proved the heliocentric theory, a theory which stated that the sun was the center of the universe and all objects moved around it. He also developed new physics theories which included the universal law of acceleration and created new inventions to enhance daily human life. He was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564 to Vincenzo Galilei, a well known musician and music theorist, and Giulia Ammannati. When he was 19, Galileo attended the University of Pisa as a medical student and soon became fascinated with mathematics and physics and was exposed to the Aristotelian view of the world, which at that time, he did support. In 1604, he refined his theories on motion and falling objects, and developed the universal law of acceleration, X=〖at〗^2, which all objects obeyed. That same year, Galileo began to openly express his support of the Copernican theory that stated that the earth and the planets revolved around the sun. In 1610, he published a small booklet, The Starry Messenger, revealing his discoveries that the moon was not flat and smooth, but a sphere with mountains and craters. In addition, Galileo discovered that Venus had phases like the moon, proving that it rotated around the sun, and Jupiter had revolving moons, which didn t revolve around the earth. For the next couple of decades, Galileo published Discourse on Bodies in Water and Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which refuted many of the Catholic Church s teaching and as a result, Galileo was called in front of the Catholic Church and was convicted of heresy. Despite being put under house arrest for the rest of his life, he continued to publish books about his life from his house. Galileo died on January 8, 1642 near Florence, Italy from a fever and heart palpations ( Galileo Web). Essay on Differences between Lives in Solingen and Phoenix Differences between Lives in Solingen and Phoenix As I arrived at Phoenix in September of 1999, I was very excited to see this famous city and it s country and to get to know everything about it. But with the time I realized that Phoenix is not more different than my town in Germany, Solingen. It s a not a big city but it is a very beautiful one with many small streets and small houses around them. I had even the impression that the life in Germany was more exciting than in Phoenix. Now I m living in Phoenix for over one year and I can say now that there are many differences between those two countries which had a big influence at our further lives. The buses are stationed only on few places and they arrive in very long intervals. So after a time, we realized that we had to buy a car. In contrast to Phoenix, during our time in Solingen, we used the car mostly for longer trips. The whole city was connected with bus lines and they were coming to the bus stations every ten minutes. If we had to go somewhere in the city, we used mostly the buses. We saved our gas money and were there always on time. While in Phoenix you have problems to find the time to go out with your friends, in Solingen, I was most of the time able to plan something at a short time. Every day after the school, I went to the downtown of Solingen with some friends or alone and we were walking through the streets full of stores and joking around. I did this almost every day in the week. On the weekends there were many places to go out with friends like many clubs and cafe s in Solingen or in the bigger towns next to us like Dusseldorf or Cologne. • 6. Rhetorical Devices In Eleven By Cisneros Throughout the story Eleven , Cisneros demonstrates to the reader that Rachel despises her eleventh birthday. In doing so, Cisneros uses rhetorical devices such as tone, simile, dialogue, and repetition. These rhetorical devices serve to further insinuate how Rachel feels about her eleventh birthday. For instance, Rachel uses simile to compare her conflicted emotions to the rattling of pennies in a tin Band Aid box. Furthermore, Cisneros displays tone and repetition within the story in order to depict Rachel s attitude. • 7. I Have A Dream Speech Analysis 54 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his famous I have a dream speech , which along with Lincoln s Gettysburg address are examples of the best oratory works. The two speeches were critical to the growth and development of America. They come from two men from different backgrounds and different times but with one common goal, equality for all. Standing on the same spot as Lincoln did five score years ago, King preached similar themes of justice, equality and freedom. Lincolns speech was a eulogy to those who died in the battle of Gettysburg, at the time America was at civil war. Lincoln spoke to a crowd of thousands to inspire them to keep fighting the war. In comparison to King, who stood before a crowd of over 200,000 people at the Lincoln memorial and shared his dream of a new future for black Americans. The context of each address has a profound impact upon their purpose and qualities. One distinct quality of Lincolns speech is that it is structured in chronological order, with each of the three separate paragraphs encompassing the past, present and future. This is a device used by Lincoln to build up his audience s attention to the speeches climatic end. This can be compared to Kings structural approach, where he uses a ladder technique to construct his points in order of ascending importance. Once again ending strongly with the line: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty we are free at last! Both methods of structure of the speeches assist in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Motifs And Motifs In Macbeth In literature, one might notice certain images, objects, or ideas recurring throughout the piece. These are called motifs, and unsurprisingly, many motifs are present in the works of William Shakespeare. There are many themes that Shakespeare conveys through motif in his play Macbeth. One of these is that breaking the Great Chain of Being results in misery and disorder, but the natural order tends to eventually recover. Another is that violence is morally ambiguous and can be good or evil depending only on who the violence affects. Finally, Shakespeare shows that what one perceives as reality is not necessarily reality, especially under the effects of guilt and or paranoia. From reading Macbeth, one can easily pick up on these messages: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, towards the end of the play, the natural order begins to return to normal. Hearing that Birnam wood was coming to Dunsinane Macbeth remarks I pull in resolution and begin To doubt th equivocation of the fiend That lies like truth. Fear not, till Birnam wood Do come to Dunsinane ; and now a wood Comes toward Dunsinane. Arm, arm, and out! If this which he avouches does appear, There is nor flying hence nor tarrying here. I gin to be aweary of the sun, And wish th estate o th world were now undone. Ring the alarum bell! Blow, wind! Come, wrack! At least we ll die with harness on our back (V.v.47 58). This quote draws parallels between Macbeth and a horse, first with the metaphor of him pulling in resolution. Through this metaphor, Macbeth suggests a fear that allowing the horse of his confidence to be free was a mistake. He mentions later that at least [he ll] die with harness on [his] back (V.v.58), which shows that Macbeth is returning to the battlefield where the natural order says he should be. Rather than rule, Macbeth s nature is to obey commands, as both a soldier and a horse does. Shakespeare emphasizes the unnatural nature of Macbeth s rule once again over here, as Birnam Wood moving to Dunsinane is an event that does not occur naturally. Shakespeare demonstrates through his use of these two nature motifs to enhance the idea that a disturbance to the natural order causes great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Importance Of Taking Risks In Beowulf De Armas, Albert M. Ascorbe English 4 P.7 10/15/17 The Importance of Taking Risks Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks. Beowulf sees the need of taking risks when he must help his friend across the sea in bringing peace to his land. Hrothgar s kingdom, Denmark, is being terrorized by the vicious, bloody thirsty demons, Grendel and his mother. Sailing across the sea, putting his own life at risk for others is an immense risk that can certainly lead to Beowulf s demise. • 12. The Four Dimensions Of Cultural Values Understanding the differences and similarities inherent in other cultures may provide opportunities when working with individuals (or groups) who may have very different or similar cultural values. Through the work of many people, more is known about other cultures values than perhaps ever before. Geert Hofstede is one of these people, and his work has allowed for a greater understanding of cultural values across a wide range of dimensions. His work has grown from four dimensions to six, and as more information is gathered this will perhaps increase as well. In the first section, the first four dimensions of cultural values will be discussed briefly. Next, all six dimensions will be given for the United States (US) and Japan, and will be considered according to the highest and lowest differences between dimensions of these two countries cultural values. In addition, considerations for applying motivational theories toward individuals from these two countries will also be discussed. Lastly, a single dimension will be selected for each country and a recommendation given accordingly that could help improve performance. Four Dimensions of Cultural Values Latham (2012) outlines four of the broad categories of Hofstede s cultural dimensions, including low high power distance, individualism collectivism, masculinity femininity, and uncertainty avoidance, which will be discussed here. Ingsoc uses surveillance to watch and listen to every person living in Oceania. One quote makes this very evident and the quote is: Big Brother is watching you. Australia is part of the worldwide foreign aid commitment and plans to give $3.9 billion over 2017 and 2018. Australians believe everyone should live with basic human rights which is why we give aid, and help countries by contributing money, food and resources. The main types of aid are humanitarian aid, which is disaster/emergency relief and development aid, which is a long term commitment between nations. Australian aid is mainly focused on development aid, and helps nations worldwide. Interestingly, 90% of Australia s foreign aid goes to Asia Pacific countries such as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This gives Australia a stronger relationship with regional nations, providing the country with a strong relation, trading partner and partner in defence. Aid is a polarizing issue that divides the nation due to the two differing views on Australia giving aid, should the country give foreign aid or not? • 15. Characteristics Of Satan In Paradise Lost In Paradise Lost the character of Satan is created by Milton. There are many characters of Satan in literature, and over the creation of each Satan, he as a character has evolved. It is thought by John Carey that Milton observed the former characters of Satan and used them as inspiration to influence his new character as Satan. Milton created Satan as the author of evil and created him by himself. Satan is the main character throughout Paradise Lost that starts the story and puts events into motion. As Milton created his Satan he focused on strong characteristics of epic heroes and rhetoric. In Paradise Lost , Milton uses select qualities of an epic hero to be displayed as an epic hero himself. To become an epic hero the character must travel over vast settings to meet the criteria to be an epic hero. Milton created the story in a religious sense which can be seen in the setting too. The setting consists of Earth, Hell, Heaven, and the space between them. Heaven and Hell are complete polar opposites which is in relation to the distance between them. The space between Heaven and Hell is empty space and Earth. Earth represents the middle ground between perfect and imperfect. Satan starts his journey in Hell and must travel through Hell to the far gates out of Hell. And thrice threefold the gates... Yet unconsumed ( II.645 648). It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. It all began on 1 September, 1939 with the invasion of Poland by Germany and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and the United Kingdom. The landings initially encountered heavy resistance from the German 716th Infantry Division; the preliminary bombardment proved less effective than had been hoped and rough weather forced the first wave to be delayed until 07:35. The beach was defended by two battalions of the German 716th Infantry Division, with elements of the 21st Panzer Division in reserve near Caen. The Canadians took heavy casualties in the opening minutes of the first wave. Strength of numbers, as well as coordinated fire support from artillery and armored squadrons, cleared most of the coastal defenses within two hours of landing. The subsequent push inland towards Car piquet and the Caen Bayeux railway line achieved mixed results. The sheer numbers of men and vehicles on the beaches created lengthy delays between the landing of the 9th Brigade and the beginning of substantive attacks to the south. A combination of factors led to his rise as the head of al Qaeda: personal charisma, militant religious fervor, educational background, and a well funded bank account. To his disciples, bin Laden is portrayed as a humble, pious man. When in view of his followers, he was careful to cultivate an aura of humility. But that was just the image he wanted to portray to his followers. His narcissistic personality needed devout followers, which was realized through his radical version of Islam. • 18. Analysis Of Caprice No. 24 By Niccolo Paganini Caprice No. 24 By Niccolo Paganini Nicoló Paganini was a famous Italian violinist born in the midst of The Enlightenment. He wrote a set of 24 Capriccis for the violin in the early 1800s, the most famous of which is the final caprice, simply referred to as Caprice No. 24 . The final caprice exemplifies Paganini s bold style and technique, which was a natural byproduct of the musical liberation that took place during the Enlightenment. His work would inspire musicians for centuries to come. I chose Caprice No. 24 largely because it is one of the most well known piece by Paganini. In present day, the famous neoclassical guitar player, Yngwie Malmsteen a virtuoso in his own right and a musician that I greatly admire has cited Paganini as a source of inspiration for his music. I wanted to investigate this claim. I had heard small portions of Caprice No. 24 over the years, but my first exposure to the piece in its entirety was through a studio recorded, 2013 performance by violinist David Garrett, accompanied by an orchestra. My first impression was that I was listening to a rock star. I had a notable physical reaction to the music; I felt a rush of adrenaline and my heart rate increased. The music was fast paced and intense undoubtedly physically and mentally demanding on Garrett. I am a pianist myself, and I felt a sense of empathy. I was exhausted on his behalf by simply hearing his talented performance. The music would slow down in some parts, only to pick back up with even more intensity and speed. The music aroused a familiar sense of pressure, such as the pressure to complete a difficult yet important task in a short period of time. The pressure and difficulty build to near unbearable proportions until the work is finally finished, and dissipates into the euphoria of accomplishment. If that scenario had a theme song, it could be Paganini s Caprice No. 24 . The music was passionate, chaotic, and ultimately satisfying. I felt that I had witnessed true mastery of the art of the violin in both Paganini s written work and Garrett s performance. Caprice No. 24 is a violin solo written in the key of A minor, lending a dark and sinister quality to the melody. The word caprice is an Italian word which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Liberal Democracy Essay Liberal democracies, are defined as the system in which governmental body operate under the principle of individual rights and work to protect them regardless of religion, sect, ethnicity etc. Liberal democracies are thought to be secular in nature and generally do not account for religions or ethnicities rather they promote a certain nationalistic perspective throughout the state. Laws are made through majority vote in the parliament and are meant to be logical in nature rather than derived from sources like religion, culture, traditions etc. However, in some parts of the world such as Middle East, people value their sectarian or ethnic identities more than nationalistic values.
