Analysis Of The Movie Rent
Samantha Wong
Intro to Fine Arts
25 January 2016
Critique 1
Theatre/Cinema: Rent (2005, Taye Diggs Rosario Dawson) On February 15, 2016, I watched the
movie rent. The setting of the movie is based on a documentary of the AIDS epidemic in the late
1980s and early 1990s. The movie theme depicts eight individuals who struggle with poverty,
homosexuality, death, and hardships of life in New York City. I believe Rent did a great job utilizing
the costumes, lighting, and props and furniture to get the message across. The costumes in the movie
reflect the character s personality and developed a vision for the audience. For the most part the
women wore brighter colors, such as red, orange, and animal print, while the men stuck to the basic

Essay on A Report On Schindlers List
A Report On Schindlers List
Thomas Keneally s Schindler s List is the historical account of Oskar Schindler and his heroic actions
in the midst of the horrors of World War II Poland. Schindler s List recounts the life of Oskar
Schindler, and how he comes to Poland in search of material wealth but leaves having saved the lives
of over 1100 Jews who would most certainly have perished. The novel focuses on how Schindler
comes to the realization that concentration and forced labor camps are wrong, and that many people
were dying through no fault of their own. This realization did not occur overnight, but gradually came
to be as the business man in Oskar Schindler turned into the savior of the Jews that had brought him
so much wealth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This turns out to be timely for Schindler as now he is able to get very cheap labor. The next few years
would go well for Schindler and his factory for they turned a great profit. In fact he made so much
money that he is quoted as saying, I ve made more money than I could possibly spend in a lifetime. ;
His workers were also very happy. This is because Schindler s Jews ; were treated as humans as
opposed to being treated as animals. For them, working in Schindler s factory was an escape from the
ghetto and from much German cruelty. They loved Schindler so much that his factory became known
as a haven throughout the Jewish community. However, things began to go sour for Schindler, when
the Germans ordered the liquidation of the ghettoes. Soon all of the Jews in the Cracow ghetto were
relocated to the Plaszow labor camp. By this time Schindler had grown so affectionate toward his
Jewish workers that he refused to hire Poles, and instead sought of a way to keep using the Jews that
he had grown so accustomed to. As the Cracow Jews were relocated to the Plaszow labor camp, Oskar
Schindler came into direct dealings with the camp s director, Amon Goeth. He did not like Amon, but
he tried to get in on his best side in order to keep using his Jews in his factory. Amon agreed to let
Schindler use them, and thus saving his Jews from some of the harshness of the Plaszow labor camp.

Differences Between Language And Communication
Language. What exactly is it? We use it every day to communicate with people around us from a very
early age. As we walk around and take in the world around us we notice some people communicating
differently. Their words don t sound like ours, yet they are able to function the same way we do and
complete the same tasks. Stated on dictionary.com language is a body of words of words and the
systems for their use common to a people who are of the same community or nation, the same
geographical area, or the same cultural tradition. From this definition, we can see that language can
have many different variations. Variations can be in the same language or different languages.
Variations in languages can be accents, pronunciations, dialects, and grammar (Language). For
example, in America, and in the United Kingdom we speak English, but our accents, pronunciations,
and even word usage is very different. This speaking communication is known as linguistic So, How
is it that language has developed? Before communication between humans became linguistic it was
first just nonverbal movements like different facial expressions, gestures, and noises known as non
linguistic communication (Pereltsvaig 1). According to Professor J.F Stein from the physiology
department at Oxford University Language is a relatively new thing and only developed about 50,000
years ago (131). So basically, humans were very successful at surviving even when they weren t able
to verbally address things. This

Similarities Between Dewey Finn And Bill Rago
The essay illustrates the differences and similarities of Dewey Finn played by Danny DeVito from the
movie The School of Rock and Bill Rago played by Jack Black from the movie Renaissance Man .
They both undergo the life changing experiences and this essay will elaborate on both before and after
they become teachers. Both have the same goal; however, they choose different paths to obtain it.
While Jack Black is more enthusiastic and shows somewhat of a desperate desire to connect with
children, On the other hand, Danny DeVito is calmer and perceived as apathetic. However, they share
one key aspect of their characteristics they both seem to suffer from an inferiority complex. Dewey
Finn and Bill Rago were two people with very similar qualities. Dewey Finn was characterized as a
person who was very arrogant and was extrapolated as being haughty. He was a lazy person and was
disliked by many due to his behavior and was unaware of his own problems or probably cared less.
For instance, Dewey was warned by his roommate to be kicked out of his apartment because he had
not paid the rent for at least a year. This showcased as to how indolent a person may be. Whereas, Bill
Rago is just analogous as Dewey Finn. They also depict as to how self assertive he was; these
characteristics made him lose a lot of opportunities to succeed, in life. For instance, he could not reach
his office on time and lost a 6 million deal which was going on. This is the world in which both are

Reflective Essay On Personal Writing
Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have
learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good
at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing
and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to
help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it,
and it has become a huge part of my life.
Writing has affected my life for the better, but our relationship is still rocky. I never realized how
much of an impact writing would have on my life, until I began my career in law enforcement. Prior to
my career in law enforcement, I was a student athlete. I always viewed writing as a chore, something
that I had to do, and that always frustrated me. It frustrated me, because, I did not think I was good at
it. I then discovered personal writing. I began writing letters, telling stories, the whole nine yards; I
learned to allow personal writing to be an outlet, and that helped me to become an overall better
writer. After I became familiar with personal writing, writing started to grow on me. I found myself
doing more and more writing, and I was enjoying it. When I enjoy writing, it makes the whole process
seem easier.
I have always been apprehensive of educational writing. The reason for that is, I know the process
involved is going to be difficult, and it always seems to give me a hard time. I would cringe at the
sentence, your homework is an essay about this book or anything along those lines. I have never really
enjoyed educational writing, because, I have always thought it was too complicated. Educational
writing simply comes with too many difficult tasks such as, creating an outline, proofreading your
work, in text citations, properly citing your sources; those are tasks that I have always been mediocre
at, therefore, I despise educational writing, even though I know it is necessary. I often times stress
trying to find research, because, I am afraid of plagiarising when it is not my intent. I do not have a
problem looking things up; I have a

Chiropractic Ethical Dilemmas
In the past century, chiropractors were shunned and undermined as unethical medical doctors with the
sole belief that it was unethical to associate with any of these kind of practitioners. The article which I
have thoroughly analysed was retrieved on the American Medical Association website. It outlines the
history and events of the struggle of the chiropractors back in the early 1800s up until the late 1900 s.
The article also explains how Chester Wilk along with four other chiropractors sued the AMA due to
violations of section 1 and 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Through these significant events, the future
of chiropractic has been created into what it is as of today.
The chiropractic profession which was first founded and formed by Daniel ... Show more content on

By 1920, over half of the states had legalised chiropractic. AMA however still maintained pressure
with the new ideas of adopting basic science examinations and qualifying in order to receive a license.
The exams were completely difficult to pass especially for chiropractors since an understanding of
medical training was required which they did not have. From the period between 1929 and1950, no
chiropractors were granted licenses due to none of them passing the medical examinations that were

Trotsky s Assessment Of The Continuity Between Stalinism...
Trotsky s assessment of the continuity between Stalinism and Leninism Bolshevism is valid to a
certain extent. It is axiomatic that there is a multiplicity of factors that seem to correlate Stalinism to
Leninism, thus adding validity to Trotsky s assessment of the continuity. However the straight line
theory of the continuity between the two ideological phenomena, implied by Trotsky, undermines the
divergence between them. Both phenomenons rose up in the Soviet Russia during the times of civil
unrest, but Stalinism can be seen as more of a revolution from above whilst the Bolsheviks Leninism
can be seen as more of a revolution from below .
The historical development of Stalinism can be traced and analyzed through its several stages. ...
Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, elements of discontinuity are also present as the revolution was perverted by the Stalinist
structure as the dictatorship of the proletariat soon became the dictatorship of Stalin. Furthermore
Stalin s theory of Socialism in One Country betrayed that of the Marxist Leninist theory of
propagating socialism to other countries.
In order to fully assess the validity of the statement, two fundamental factors must we must firstly
look at. Firstly the aspects of continuity that may have lead to the the statement.Secondly, factors
within the Stalinist regime that illustrate aspects of discontinuity from the Bolshevik regime. Lastly,
the reason for the characterization, on behalf of Trotsky to possibility to give validity to the Stalinist
regime, likening that to the popularized Leninist Bolshevik regime.
Why does Trotsky legitimize the Stalinist regime as being linked to the Bolsheviks? Trotsky s
assessment of the of the Stalinist phenomenon certainly seems unexpected considering that any link
between the two systems would certainly seem to undermine Trotsky s creditably as the appropriate
successor of Lenin.
Trotsky was a renowned revolutionary who played a pivotal role during the Bolshevik Revolutionary.
He was born on November 7th, 1879 in Yanovka, Ukraine, to Jewish parents. In many regards,

On august 29th, 2005, the United States gulf coast was struck by a category 5 hurricane. Hurricane
Katrina shined a light on the need for a military response plan to domestic natural disasters

History And Background Of John Deere
History and Background of John Deere John Deere (also known as Deere and Company) began when
founder John Deere, a blacksmith and a repair man, began to grow tired with the traditional way of
making plows. Plows in the nineteenth century were made to order and usually made from wood or
iron. In 1837, John Deere created a plow using a steel saw blade. The smooth sided plow was much
easier and faster to clean than traditional plows (Wikipedia). John Deere decided that he would
manufacture the plows and then put them up for sale. This allowed customers to actually see what
they were buying beforehand. His business started to gain popularity. In 1912, the company began to
expand into the tractor business. In 1918 Deere and Company purchased

Batteries And Its Effects On The World
Batteries. Possibly one of the most unappreciated inventions in the world. They re see strewn around
your home, just lose and debatably old or new. We couldn t power a toy truck nor a hearing aid
without them yet we disrespect the honor of one of the most genius and important inventions in
history. Batteries are very important but is there anything we can replace it with possibly, ourselves?
Well, first we need to know what exactly a battery actually does. The first true battery was invented by
Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist, in 1800. Batteries are a mass of one or more cells whose
chemical reactions create a flow of electrons in a circuit. Batteries contain three basic parts:
electrodes, an electrolyte, and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The anode is known as the reducing agent, because it loses electrons. But do we know what it means
for a battery to be dead? Well, as the anode and cathode are connected to a circuit and a chemical
reaction takes place between the anode and the electrolyte, the reaction causes electrons to race
through the circuit and back into the cathode where another chemical reaction takes place. When the
material in the cathode or anode gets to the point where it is consumed or no longer able to be used in
the reaction, the battery is unable to produce electricity. At that point, your battery is officially
considered dead (Hymel 2016). More recently, in 1980, an American physicist Professor John
Goodenough invented the lithium battery. As lithium is one of the lightest elements on the period table
and being its electrochemical potential is extremely high, the combination produces some of the
highest possible voltages in the most compact and lightest volumes (Alarco 2015). There is an
unfortunate decent balance between advantages and disadvantage for lithium batteries. An advantage
is that its low maintenance, therefore the batteries don t exhibit a phenomenon known as the Memory
Effect , of which in short is now used as a general term for anything that makes a battery not deliver at
its full capacity. A disadvantage of lithium batteries is the cost. Money is
what makes the world go round and as a potential luxury item may seem valuable enough to

Better Than Raising The Minimum Wage Analysis
Around 15% of American citizens live below the poverty line today, and many believe that raising the
minimum wage will lower this number. On May 21, 2015, The Wall Street Journal published an article
by Warren Buffett, Better Than Raising the Minimum Wage. Buffett writes about a cost effective way
for Americans to receive a steadier income other than raising the minimum wage. He highlights that
the everyday worker with no special skills often finds it hard to be successful. The way Buffett
proposes to fix this issue is to develop the Earned Income Tax Credit or Tax returns. Buffett used a lot
of fact based arguments and appealed to ethos, but it could not make up for the lack of pathos and a
strong argument in this article.
This piece does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His main argument in this article is that the government should not raise the minimum wage, but
instead, should expand on the Earned Income Tax Credit. He believes that instead of one, yearly
payment, the government could do monthly payments. Buffett also believes that this will deter people
from taking out unnecessary loans while they are waiting for their tax returns to come through. While
this is all a great idea, he has some issues with how he presents the information. He does not talk
about any of this until the last four or five paragraphs, and there are upwards of 20 paragraphs in this
article. He spends a lot of time making a strong point, without even mentioning his actual argument
until the very end. And while he does do a good job at explaining his solution, he never tells the reader
how to fix the problem. The people reading The Wall Street Journal are business people or people who
are interested in the economy. Buffett wrote this article for those who have the power to make this
change, possibly politicians, but he does not tell them how to make his plan play out. This is really
where Buffett starts to lose his rhetoric strength, and he also struggles with the pathos part of the piece

The mind has pathways that link it together. If these pathways are messed up, it can cause bad habits
and emotional problems. Hypnosis for eyelash pulling helps to fix the brain s pathways. Instead of
resorting to pain when you feel stressed, your mind looks for a better choice.
Hypnosis for eyelash pulling helps to rewire your mind. You have developed a nervous habit over
years. Your mind resorts to this habit, but hypnosis helps you unlearn it again. Instead of impulsively
pulling hair, you may take deep breaths or go on a walk. Your mind is given new ways to handle stress
and negative emotions.
Your subconscious mind is always working, but you cannot talk to it all the time. Most of the time,
you do not realize it is there. In hypnosis, we can draw out the subconscious mind. During this mental
state, we can talk directly to the subconscious. Your mind gets a chance to work through fears, habits
and stress. Basically, your conscious mind can change the way your subconscious thinks.
If your mind can learn to see hair pulling as bad, it will alert you before you pull hairs. You will not

Personal Note On Self Awareness
Self awareness is always a helpful trait to have in any facet of life. Dr. Kahlib Fischer said that the
task of completing the self awareness test is a means of helping you come to terms with ways that God
has gifted and equipped you to serve His purposes in whatever organization He has you in (2006).
Being aware of your own weaknesses and strengths can help you strive to be a better version of your
current self. How, you may ask? For me, I know that time management and attention to detail are
weaknesses. Because I know that, I am aware that I need to pay extra attention to the things that
require these two traits. It has helped me prioritize activities to ensure I get them done correctly and in
a timely manner. I used the Prentice Hall Self Assessment Online Library to learn more about myself
(2016). I hope to be able to use the knowledge I have gained in my personal and professional life.
Below is a summary of what I learned from each part of the assessment. Good introductory

What about Me? For most of the assessments in the first section, I was not surprised by my results. I
am fairly self aware of my attitudes about most issues. The one that surprised me the most was the
section on ambiguity. Robbins and Judge say that the greater the ambiguity, the greater the potential
for conflict to emerge (2009, p. 488). I like to think of myself as someone that rolls with the punches
easily. However, according to the assessment, I don t

Time To Flush Your Transmission? 3 Signs To Look For
Everyone want their vehicle to be in good condition so that it is dependable when the are on the road.
With so many moving components, it is hard to know what trouble signs to look out for. One part that
you may be ignoring is the transmission, which actually needs the fluids to be flushed from time to
time. Here are some signs it is time to put in new transmission fluid.
The Fluid Changed Color
Chances are that you have never seen your transmission fluid. The fluid is typically a bright red color,
but it can also be yellow, blue, or green depending on who makes your fluid. What you want to watch
out for is if the fluid has changed in color. Dirty transmission fluid will have a brown tint ... Show

The gears should not be hesitating when switching between them, or slipping down into a lower gear
for a brief moment.
Dirty transmission fluid can cause various problems, such as there being a notable delay when
accelerating. The car could have problems when changing gears when you get on the freeway or when
you are accelerating quickly and the RPMs are quite high.
Ignoring these issues could cause damage to your vehicle s transmission. Avoid an expensive repair by
having the fluid flushed out at the first sign of any of these problems.
You ve Driven the Car A Lot
Much like the oil for your engine, transmission fluid also requires regular flushing based on how many
miles you have driven. Every car manufacturer will recommend changing the transmission fluid after
a specific amount of miles, which caries from vehicle to vehicle. It is common to replace transmission
fluid between 24,000 and 30,000 miles, and if you do not drive that many miles, then after 2 years.
Don t make the mistake of waiting until your transmission fails to have it looked at. Being aware of
these three problems will help keep your car running smoothly. If you ever have doubts about
something off your transmission is doing, do not hesitate to take your car to a local mechanic to have

The Causes Of The Drought In California
The Drought in California has lasted about five years. California is an American state known for it
agricultural industry and large cities. It is on the West Coast near the Ocean as well. It is supposed to
get both rain and snowfall throughout the year, but the drought has prevented as sufficient amount
from occurring.
The drought was caused by overuse and over extraction from water tables and freshwater sources for
the commercial agricultural industry. The biggest cause, however, was a high pressure system near the
coast diverting storms away from California because it cannot rain California is in a drought.
Due to this drought, many crops have dies leading to poverty for many farmers. People are lacking
clean drinking water forcing the state to bring it in from other states. Water tables are collapsing as
well.
To mitigate loss of life close monitoring of dry woods needs to occur that way if a forest fire starts it
can be put out easier, or the surrounding areas can evacuate more effectively.
People are also shifting away from grass lawns to save water from being wasted on something purely
for intrinsic value. They are also using less water for washing dishes and showering to prevent the
need for any more water extraction.
California is also importing more produce instead of growing it on their own to prevent
malnourishment and supplement the lack of produce being grown in state.

BREAD SANDRA CISNEROS I question whether these two people in the story are having an affair,
back together after a divorce, or whatever? Something as simple as bread can lead to that answer. The
bread is much like their relationship, actually exactly like it. We were hungry. We went into a Bakery
on Grand Avenue and bought bread. Filled the backseat. The whole car smelled of bread. Big
sourdough loaves shaped like a fat ass (Cisneros 84). It was an affair. They were lusting each other
and finally have to give in and it is Grand, like the Avenue, it fills the backseat, and the whole car
smells of it. Comparing the bread to an ass also takes on a sexual tone. We ripped big chunks with our
hands and ate (Cisneros 84). They gorged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I mean seriously. This girl is pretty pathetic. It is even kind of funny. This guy has killed and raped
eleven other girls. He is probably going to look like a psycho. He brings this young girl a cup of
freaking Kool Aid and she knows she loves him. It does not get much worse than that. Even the title,
One Holy Night, hardly holy I would think, gives off a mocking tone. Barbie Q Sandra Cisneros This
story seems to contain the theme that to those who wait good things will come. And maybe even, be
grateful of what you have, for many others are much less fortunate than you. The story is being told to
the reader, as if the reader were a character. That character either being a friend or sister of the narrator
in a similar financial situation. They make the most of what they have and can afford. That being one
Barbie doll and one extra outfit apiece. But on this Sunday they go to the flea market on Maxwell
Street [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHMHFO5n6Cc] and there they were. Lying on the street
next to some tool bits, and platform shoes with the heels all squashed, and a fluorescent green wicker
wastebasket, and aluminum foil, and hubcaps, and a pink shag rug, and windshield wiper blades, and
dusty mason jars, and a coffee can full of rusty nails. There! Where? Two Mattel boxes...How much?
Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, until they say okay (Cisneros 15). This young girl
is beyond excited. She s spitting out all these things stammering

The Incredible Journey of Moll Flanders Essay example
The Incredible Journey of Moll Flanders
Abandoned by her mother at the age of six months Moll Flanders does not have any of the
requirements expected for her life journey to be a very good one. Her first memory is that of
wandering among a crew of those people they call gypsies, or Egyptians; (9). But already as a child of
about eight or ten she is aware of herself as an individual ready to shape her own life: ...for alas! all I
understood by being a gentlewoman was to be able to work for myself, and get enough to keep me
without that terrible bugbear going to service... (13).

If Defoe read The Pilgrim´s Progress he may have adopted the way of thinking of life as a journey.
Moll is not an allegory, but it is evident that in this novel we find the idea that by trying to influence
your own life you arrive at different stations. It is also clear that life takes you to stations you did not
plan to go to. Moll´s marriage to a draper turns out to be disastrous, as he wastes most of her money.
Her life´s journey takes a sharp turn when she finds herself so desperate for money , that she becomes
a whore. Her next marriage takes her on a real journey (to Virginia) where at first she is very happy
indeed. But when she discovers that her mother in law is her natural mother she says that: ... an odd
and surprising event put an end to all that felicity in a moment, and rendered my condition the most
uncomfortable, if not the most miserable, in the world. (93). Moll now proves herself to be a very
strong person when she insists on leaving Virginia, as she cannot imagine going on living with her
own brother.
Back in England she tries to set up a new life for herself. She lives for six years with a married man
and then marries an Irishman who thinks she is a woman with a very great fortune. This man is the
only one for whom she expresses real love, but both of them being poor, the marriage is

Impact Of Advertising On The State Of Alabama
Political ads have become something politics rely on to achieve the voters vote. Politics is a huge part
of our democracy and we take pride and joy with the power our decision has in our government. We
see the same message from each candidate that we miss to look at their body language and what each
word they say mean throughout the commercial. Every political commercial has the same purpose, but
it s always directed to specific people. It s simple to get lost in words when you are unfamiliar with the
topic so it s crucial for us to pay attention and think critical. The politician in the video isn t running
for president or congress, he s running for Agricultural Commission of Alabama which might be as big
as running for president in that state. In this essay we will discuss the reinforcements, visual effects,
and the hidden we miss.
Advertising has become a huge part of our society, as a community we respond to what we see on
television. The impact this commercial may be bigger in the state of Alabama than in other states. The
patterns of this video text are set well, as they show an Alabama citizen ready for a huge role in the
community. The way he speaks compels the audience to think that he can back up what he is saying
with his experience. There is a significant to committing to the people it gives a secure tone and adds
stability to his words. The effectiveness of this commercial is shown directly with the vocabulary he
uses by pointing out the errors Alabama is

License Plate Readers Summary
The advent of license plate readers (LPRs) has brought joy to law enforcement due to the ways in
which LPRs can facilitate ongoing investigations. However, it has also brought concern to privacy
advocates and law abiding citizens whose data is also being picked up by LPRs. Allison Klein and
Josh White s Washington Post article, titled License Plate Readers: A Useful Tool for Police Comes
with Privacy Concerns, explores these two perspectives. The article starts by examining the adoption
of this technology in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. There is a high concentration of LPRs
in the city proper. The local police departments want to ensure that LPRs cover the entirety of the
District of Columbia. However, there has been pushback from groups like the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU). The ACLU claims that no level of government whether it is local, state, or
federal should have widespread access to the travels of innocent civilians. Law enforcement agencies
across the country have countered such criticism with the assertion that LPRs can help with cases
involving child abductors or terrorists. LPRs would also assist in preventative policing. ... Show more

As of 2011 when this article was published there has not been any legal precedent for LPRs

Washington University. Kerr raised questions surrounding the role of LPRs, including one about the
retention of data. The main takeaway from Kerr s input is that law enforcement is not effectively

Short Essay on Inerrancy and Inspiration
Men, as worshipping creatures, are always looking for a supreme being to adore. They always are
looking for the source of truth, and asking many questions regarding what they should believe because
there are many sects out there which teach different doctrines, or even deny the deity of God and
worship other gods. When it comes to the Holy Bible, people are digging further in the outside world
to get some responses that are themselves found in the Bible. One of the questions that is asked the
most is: « Does the Bible really have Authority? ». The Bible is the word of God. As it says in the
Bible, the word of God is authoritative, inspired and inerrant.
Authority in a general sense means the power to decide or to command, to impose one s will to others.
As far as the Bible is concerned, it is also authoritative in almost the same way. The authority of God
can be seen in two angles; first, God has the authority over everything, he does whatever He wants. In
Psalms 135:6, it says; Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in
all deeps. As it can be seen, everything that is written in the bible has accomplished or is being
accomplished. What God says with is mouth His hands accomplish them. Second, the authority of his
word is infallible; it cannot be broken. His words will stay forever. In John 10:35 (KJV), the last
sentence says, ...and the scripture cannot be broken.

The Struggle Of Slavery In Douglass, By J. Jacobs
Prior to the publication of any slave narrative, African Americans had been represented by early
historians interpretations of their race, culture, and situation along with contemporary authors
fictionalized depictions. Their persona was often characterized as infantile, incompetent,
and...incapable of achievement (Hunter Willis 11) while the actions of slaveholders were justified with
the arguments that slavery would maintain a cheap labor force and a guarantee that their suffering did
not differ to the toils of the rest of the struggling world (Hunter Willis 12). The emergence of the slave
narratives created a new voice that discredited all former allegations of inferiority and produced a new
perception of resilience and ingenuity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like Douglass, Jacobs also exposed the harsh treatment towards slaves while proving that American
blacks could succeed at the same activities as whites (Hunter Willis 26) through her own narrated
experiences. Her resolve to write demonstrated a resistance to the patriarchal system of slavery
(Peterson 158) by sharing the exploits of slavery through her own point of view.
Shielded from the atrocities of slavery during her childhood, Jacobs depicts family life among slaves
as one that remains intact in a comfortable home (29) through the example of her own family. Each
member held limited rights along with the ability to work and the privilege to use their earnings as
they pleased. It is not until the death of her mistress where she finally begins to feel the effects of
slavery in the sudden separation of her family who are all distributed among her [mistress s] relatives
(Jacobs 33). The separation of family is one of the most integral subjects of her narrative since
motherhood [plays a great role] in her life (Wolfe 518). Jacobs appeals to the emotions of her female
audiences by contrasting a slave mother s agonies in her separation from her children with the happy
free women (40) whose children remain with her since no hand (40) has the right to take them away.
The separation of families in Douglass s narrative does call for some pity but the event is not as tragic

Silence Of The Lambs Film Analysis
In the film of The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a psychiatric doctor who eats the
organs of his patients and others. Clarice Starling interviewed Dr. Hannibal Lecter to help her capture
Buffalo Bill who is known for skinning young women. Film devices and techniques are important
because it helps build suspense. The film techniques in The Silence of the Lambs help contribute to
the element of suspense and horror. First, film devices and techniques in the scene where Buffalo Bill
tortures Catherine Martin who is in the hole of Bill s house help support the element of suspense and
horror. The first film device portrayed in this scene is the camera angles. It used a high and low
camera angles. The low camera angle faced downwards when it is showing Catherine Martin making
her seem small and weak. However, the high camera angle shows Buffalo Bill being seen at the top of
the hole in the basement as he is looking down on Catherine Martin. This illustrates the power Buffalo
Bill has over Catherine Martin as he laughs and tortures her. Another film device that is used in this
scene is the sound. At the end of the scene, a strange music soundtrack plays in the background when
Catherine Martin sees blood marks on the wall and screams out of fear. Buffalo Bill mocks her
screams and movements which scares her even more. The third film device is the lighting. In the
scene, Catherine Martin has no light in the hole making it dark and dull which makes it spooky. As
soon as Buffalo Bill lowers the basket, the light captures Catherine s face as she sees the bloody marks
of other victims who tried to climb out the hole.Next, film devices and techniques in the scene where
Clarice Starling talks to Buffalo Bill about Fredrica Bimmel help support the element of suspense and
horror. The first film device portrayed in this scene is parallel action. At the beginning of the scene,
the camera switches from Buffalo Bill s house to where Mr. Crawford and the FBI investigators were
at. It is parallel action because it builds suspense and it makes sure the audience is aware that Clarice
Starling does not know that she is with Buffalo Bill. Another film device that is used in the scene is a

Taking a Look at Dandelions
Medicinal plants have been used since the early ages of humanity and many remedies are still used
today. Among these many plant medicines is the dandelion, whose variety of uses makes it one of the
more popular medicines. Dandelions were often used by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and have
been used in Chinese medicine for over a thousand years. They came to America on the Mayflower,
brought for their medicinal benefits. Before the inventions of the lawn, dandelions were praised as a
bounty of food, medicine, and magic (Sanchez 2007).
Dandelions grow anywhere that has an abundance of sunlight, such as lawns, sidewalks, and roads,
and are difficult to get rid of because of their long roots. Against many gardener s judgement, growing
dandelions in a garden can be beneficial (Sanchez 2007). Their roots loosen the soil making it easier to
grow plants and their leaves, flowers, and roots can be harvested to cure a variety of illnesses.
Dandelions grown as a crop should be spaced about a foot apart and kept clean by hoeing. The tops
should be cut off so the land will not be smothered by the weed when the seeds appear.
Dandelions can be used as a stimulant to our bodies, but are used mainly for the urinary organs, and
also used to treat kidney and liver disorders. The leaves can be used as a general tonic and the roots
can be used for muscle pain. Dandelion greens are used as a diuretic and their effect can help lower
blood pressure. Dandelion roots also are good cleansing and

As well about half the students did not take us seriously. So with those in mind we had to build up our
credibility. In the beginning of the year we had to start with factual pieces which we brought the
students peers to react to videos like the iPhone 6 plus bend test in which I was in charge of. We got
great reactions and we got students to actually watch the show. As well as showing quotes from
important people and/or organizations. Students would actually believe and understand what we were
showing and were being informed. On top of that we got each episode checked for credible by
administers which we always passed. From these experience in broadcasting I learned how to use
ethos quite effectively. Broadcasting taught me that without ethos you do not have anywhere to begin.
If no one sees that you are credible then no one will listen to you in your discourse community. It is
important to show credibility without there is nowhere to start. This transferred to my own way of
using ethos to in the beaginnig show and strengthen my credibility early on so people keep listening.
It is easy to just say a few facts but as our audience are high school students we had to gain their

Constructivist Beliefs And Assumptions That Learners...
The foundations of this study are cemented with the constructivist beliefs and assumptions that
learners actively construct their meaning and alter their prior knowledge by interacting with the
learning environment (Jansen Land, 2012). Constructivist approach to learning emphasizes the
importance of actively building meaning by interacting with the learning environment and integrating
new information into the learners existing knowledge (Dede, 2008; Dabbagh, 2006; Colburn, 2000).
Students learn better when they are actively engaged in learning process (Jaakkola, 2012). In inquiry
learning environments students learn by actively participating in the learning process, interacting with
learning materials and building new knowledge upon their prior knowledge (von Glasersfeld, 1989;
Jaakkola, 2012). Consequently inquiry contexts are more effective (Brown, 1997; Bybee, 2000;
Edelson, Gording, Pea, 1999; Haury, 1993; Jaakkola, 2012), than traditional learning by just
discharging the knowledge towards the learner (Ernest, 1995).
Although inquiry is a powerful way of learning (National Research Council, 2000), due to a multitude
of factors, inquiry is still not the most dominant method used in the brick and mortar classroom
(Kubieck, 2005). Martell (2012) identified issues such as lack of hands on tools, content knowledge,
and classroom control among the main obstacles for the implementation of inquiry practices. From
elementary school to college level hands on inquiry

The Ragtime And The Blues
Both ragtime and the blues were essential and influential in their contributions to the development of
jazz. Together, they served as the primary predecessors to the later, more complicated genre. Key
elements from each brand are incorporated and mixed to create jazz. Without the creative geniuses of
ragtime such as Scott Jopin and James Reese Europe and Blues propagators W.C. Hady and Robert
Johnson, the distinctive genre of jazz would not have emerged. Ragtime and blues are both unique in
their respective styles and means of development, yet they also share some similarities despite their
clearly outlined differences. Jasen and Tichenor argue that although ragtime constitutes a concrete
musical idiom... its distinguishing musical characteristics were lost upon its early promoters and
contemporary listening audience, and... remain muddled to this day (1). However, there are key
elements of ragtime that make it unique and recognizable. Ragtime is a sound that is played typically
on the piano in ragged time, or in other words, syncopation a rhythmic technique in which emphasis is
placed on notes that are played off the beat (Haskins 36). Another element of ragtime is its association
with dance; ragtime music would play and references would be made to ragging being a style of
dancing (Berlin 13). Ragtime developed through a combination of influences such as the call and
response pattern of slave and Negro work songs (Haskins 37) and the tenacious ensembles of

The Commodification of Disease Essay
The commodification of disease is a rapidly growing trend internationally. Most notably, this is
prominent in every type of cancer to various degrees. Consumers buy into marketing tactics and get a
sense of gratification when they purchase items branded with a cancer ribbon or other known symbol.
Through the perspective and lens of the Uses and Gratifications theory, you can see the different
reasons as to what drives consumers to purchase these products and engage in a type of cancer culture
within our society. Uses and Gratifications theory has been used to discover why consumers use
different forms of media in order to feel a sense of fulfillment within themselves. Through an array of
media, this theory has been proven to be effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this would be in Japan, where it has been suggested that the media is used to sustain a
certain view of their society and behaviors (Rubin 1993).
Other notes: Another approach to a study on uses and gratifications could be working backwards from
pleasures and gratifications to needs (Katz, Blumler and Gurevitch 1973). Whichever way you
proceed with a study, you need to systemize categories of the needs and wants of people to gauge the
gratification from a particular type of media (Katz, Blumler and Gurevitch 1973).
How it has been used in a past study: To further show the parallel of how Uses and Gratifications
theory can be applied to participating in cancer culture, the first step is to see how it has worked
within another study. Darrin Brown, Sharon Lauricella, Aziz Douai and Arshia Zaidi conducted a
study on why media consumers are drawn to crime drama television shows, through a Uses and
Gratifications approach. They re method of research was a survey that yielded 130 responses, and out
of those 88 were applicable to their research; they also included 4 open ended questions within their
survey. Through variables of sex, age and other qualities, they were able to see exactly who reached
more gratification watching these television shows. Men had more gratification than women, the older
you were the more you enjoyed them, and the more hours you viewed these dramas, the less enjoyable
they were (Brown, Lauricella, Douai, Zaidi

Asad s Theory Of White Norm And The Ku Klux Klan
White supremacy is a term that is traditionally defined as the belief that white people are superior to
those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. White
supremacy is a deep seeded ideology that, throughout history, has impacted religion, theocracy and the
structure of our organizations. Although Christianity isn t inherently white supremacy, white
supremacy can be analyzed as a religious event, as it involves the power that is synonymous with
religion and the liminal state of traditional rites of passage. This paper will explain Asad s theory of
power, summarize Turner s account of liminality, and analyze white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan
(KKK) using these two theoretical models.
White supremacy originated in the mid fifteenth century when the European powers began taking
African people as slaves in their quest for power and land. However, it wasn t until the late eighteenth
century when the theological association of Christianity and whiteness allowed white supremacy to
take on the cultural values consistent in Asad and Turner s theories. White supremacy then became
institutionally perpetuated and began to impact every facet of life. White supremacy has been used to
rationalize genocide, enslavement and prejudice. The Ku Klux Klan also became a representation of
white supremacy. The Ku Klux Klan saw its primary goal as the reestablishment of white supremacy
which became directly linked to white Protestant

  • 2. Analysis Of The Movie Rent Samantha Wong Intro to Fine Arts 25 January 2016 Critique 1 Theatre/Cinema: Rent (2005, Taye Diggs Rosario Dawson) On February 15, 2016, I watched the movie rent. The setting of the movie is based on a documentary of the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The movie theme depicts eight individuals who struggle with poverty, homosexuality, death, and hardships of life in New York City. I believe Rent did a great job utilizing the costumes, lighting, and props and furniture to get the message across. The costumes in the movie reflect the character s personality and developed a vision for the audience. For the most part the women wore brighter colors, such as red, orange, and animal print, while the men stuck to the basic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on A Report On Schindlers List A Report On Schindlers List Thomas Keneally s Schindler s List is the historical account of Oskar Schindler and his heroic actions in the midst of the horrors of World War II Poland. Schindler s List recounts the life of Oskar Schindler, and how he comes to Poland in search of material wealth but leaves having saved the lives of over 1100 Jews who would most certainly have perished. The novel focuses on how Schindler comes to the realization that concentration and forced labor camps are wrong, and that many people were dying through no fault of their own. This realization did not occur overnight, but gradually came to be as the business man in Oskar Schindler turned into the savior of the Jews that had brought him so much wealth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This turns out to be timely for Schindler as now he is able to get very cheap labor. The next few years would go well for Schindler and his factory for they turned a great profit. In fact he made so much money that he is quoted as saying, I ve made more money than I could possibly spend in a lifetime. ; His workers were also very happy. This is because Schindler s Jews ; were treated as humans as opposed to being treated as animals. For them, working in Schindler s factory was an escape from the ghetto and from much German cruelty. They loved Schindler so much that his factory became known as a haven throughout the Jewish community. However, things began to go sour for Schindler, when the Germans ordered the liquidation of the ghettoes. Soon all of the Jews in the Cracow ghetto were relocated to the Plaszow labor camp. By this time Schindler had grown so affectionate toward his Jewish workers that he refused to hire Poles, and instead sought of a way to keep using the Jews that he had grown so accustomed to. As the Cracow Jews were relocated to the Plaszow labor camp, Oskar Schindler came into direct dealings with the camp s director, Amon Goeth. • 5. Similarities Between Dewey Finn And Bill Rago The essay illustrates the differences and similarities of Dewey Finn played by Danny DeVito from the movie The School of Rock and Bill Rago played by Jack Black from the movie Renaissance Man . They both undergo the life changing experiences and this essay will elaborate on both before and after they become teachers. Both have the same goal; however, they choose different paths to obtain it. While Jack Black is more enthusiastic and shows somewhat of a desperate desire to connect with children, On the other hand, Danny DeVito is calmer and perceived as apathetic. However, they share one key aspect of their characteristics they both seem to suffer from an inferiority complex. Dewey Finn and Bill Rago were two people with very similar qualities. Dewey Finn was characterized as a person who was very arrogant and was extrapolated as being haughty. He was a lazy person and was disliked by many due to his behavior and was unaware of his own problems or probably cared less. For instance, Dewey was warned by his roommate to be kicked out of his apartment because he had not paid the rent for at least a year. This showcased as to how indolent a person may be. Whereas, Bill Rago is just analogous as Dewey Finn. They also depict as to how self assertive he was; these characteristics made him lose a lot of opportunities to succeed, in life. • 6. Reflective Essay On Personal Writing Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it, and it has become a huge part of my life. Writing has affected my life for the better, but our relationship is still rocky. I never realized how much of an impact writing would have on my life, until I began my career in law enforcement. Prior to my career in law enforcement, I was a student athlete. I always viewed writing as a chore, something that I had to do, and that always frustrated me. It frustrated me, because, I did not think I was good at it. I then discovered personal writing. I began writing letters, telling stories, the whole nine yards; I learned to allow personal writing to be an outlet, and that helped me to become an overall better writer. After I became familiar with personal writing, writing started to grow on me. I found myself doing more and more writing, and I was enjoying it. When I enjoy writing, it makes the whole process seem easier. I have always been apprehensive of educational writing. The reason for that is, I know the process involved is going to be difficult, and it always seems to give me a hard time. I would cringe at the sentence, your homework is an essay about this book or anything along those lines. I have never really enjoyed educational writing, because, I have always thought it was too complicated. Educational writing simply comes with too many difficult tasks such as, creating an outline, proofreading your work, in text citations, properly citing your sources; those are tasks that I have always been mediocre at, therefore, I despise educational writing, even though I know it is necessary. I often times stress trying to find research, because, I am afraid of plagiarising when it is not my intent. I do not have a problem looking things up; I have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Trotsky s Assessment Of The Continuity Between Stalinism... Trotsky s assessment of the continuity between Stalinism and Leninism Bolshevism is valid to a certain extent. It is axiomatic that there is a multiplicity of factors that seem to correlate Stalinism to Leninism, thus adding validity to Trotsky s assessment of the continuity. However the straight line theory of the continuity between the two ideological phenomena, implied by Trotsky, undermines the divergence between them. Both phenomenons rose up in the Soviet Russia during the times of civil unrest, but Stalinism can be seen as more of a revolution from above whilst the Bolsheviks Leninism can be seen as more of a revolution from below . We couldn t power a toy truck nor a hearing aid without them yet we disrespect the honor of one of the most genius and important inventions in history. Batteries are very important but is there anything we can replace it with possibly, ourselves? Well, first we need to know what exactly a battery actually does. Batteries contain three basic parts: electrodes, an electrolyte, and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The anode is known as the reducing agent, because it loses electrons. But do we know what it means for a battery to be dead? Well, as the anode and cathode are connected to a circuit and a chemical reaction takes place between the anode and the electrolyte, the reaction causes electrons to race through the circuit and back into the cathode where another chemical reaction takes place. When the material in the cathode or anode gets to the point where it is consumed or no longer able to be used in the reaction, the battery is unable to produce electricity. At that point, your battery is officially considered dead (Hymel 2016). More recently, in 1980, an American physicist Professor John Goodenough invented the lithium battery. As lithium is one of the lightest elements on the period table and being its electrochemical potential is extremely high, the combination produces some of the highest possible voltages in the most compact and lightest volumes (Alarco 2015). There is an unfortunate decent balance between advantages and disadvantage for lithium batteries. An advantage is that its low maintenance, therefore the batteries don t exhibit a phenomenon known as the Memory Effect , of which in short is now used as a general term for anything that makes a battery not deliver at its full capacity. We see the same message from each candidate that we miss to look at their body language and what each word they say mean throughout the commercial. Every political commercial has the same purpose, but it s always directed to specific people. It s simple to get lost in words when you are unfamiliar with the topic so it s crucial for us to pay attention and think critical. The politician in the video isn t running for president or congress, he s running for Agricultural Commission of Alabama which might be as big as running for president in that state. In this essay we will discuss the reinforcements, visual effects, and the hidden we miss. Advertising has become a huge part of our society, as a community we respond to what we see on television. The impact this commercial may be bigger in the state of Alabama than in other states. The patterns of this video text are set well, as they show an Alabama citizen ready for a huge role in the community. The way he speaks compels the audience to think that he can back up what he is saying with his experience. However, it has also brought concern to privacy advocates and law abiding citizens whose data is also being picked up by LPRs. Allison Klein and Josh White s Washington Post article, titled License Plate Readers: A Useful Tool for Police Comes with Privacy Concerns, explores these two perspectives. The article starts by examining the adoption of this technology in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. There is a high concentration of LPRs in the city proper. The local police departments want to ensure that LPRs cover the entirety of the District of Columbia. However, there has been pushback from groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The ACLU claims that no level of government whether it is local, state, or federal should have widespread access to the travels of innocent civilians. Law enforcement agencies across the country have countered such criticism with the assertion that LPRs can help with cases involving child abductors or terrorists. LPRs would also assist in preventative policing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As of 2011 when this article was published there has not been any legal precedent for LPRs specifically. • 27. Notes On Inerrancy And Inspiration Essay Fedner Faustin MLA THEO 201 B01 Short Essay on Inerrancy and Inspiration Men, as worshipping creatures, are always looking for a supreme being to adore. They always are looking for the source of truth, and asking many questions regarding what they should believe because there are many sects out there which teach different doctrines, or even deny the deity of God and worship other gods. When it comes to the Holy Bible, people are digging further in the outside world to get some responses that are themselves found in the Bible. One of the questions that is asked the most is: « Does the Bible really have Authority? ». The Bible is the word of God. As it says in the Bible, the word of God is authoritative, inspired and inerrant. Authority in a general sense means the power to decide or to command, to impose one s will to others. As far as the Bible is concerned, it is also authoritative in almost the same way. The authority of God can be seen in two angles; first, God has the authority over everything, he does whatever He wants. In Psalms 135:6, it says; Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps. As it can be seen, everything that is written in the bible has accomplished or is being accomplished. What God says with is mouth His hands accomplish them. Second, the authority of his word is infallible; it cannot be broken. His words will stay forever. In John 10:35 (KJV), the last sentence says, ...and the scripture cannot be broken. ... Like Douglass, Jacobs also exposed the harsh treatment towards slaves while proving that American blacks could succeed at the same activities as whites (Hunter Willis 26) through her own narrated experiences. Her resolve to write demonstrated a resistance to the patriarchal system of slavery (Peterson 158) by sharing the exploits of slavery through her own point of view. Shielded from the atrocities of slavery during her childhood, Jacobs depicts family life among slaves as one that remains intact in a comfortable home (29) through the example of her own family. Each member held limited rights along with the ability to work and the privilege to use their earnings as they pleased. It is not until the death of her mistress where she finally begins to feel the effects of slavery in the sudden separation of her family who are all distributed among her [mistress s] relatives (Jacobs 33). The separation of family is one of the most integral subjects of her narrative since motherhood [plays a great role] in her life (Wolfe 518). The film techniques in The Silence of the Lambs help contribute to the element of suspense and horror. First, film devices and techniques in the scene where Buffalo Bill tortures Catherine Martin who is in the hole of Bill s house help support the element of suspense and horror. The low camera angle faced downwards when it is showing Catherine Martin making her seem small and weak. However, the high camera angle shows Buffalo Bill being seen at the top of the hole in the basement as he is looking down on Catherine Martin. This illustrates the power Buffalo Bill has over Catherine Martin as he laughs and tortures her. Another film device that is used in this scene is the sound. At the end of the scene, a strange music soundtrack plays in the background when Catherine Martin sees blood marks on the wall and screams out of fear. Buffalo Bill mocks her screams and movements which scares her even more. The third film device is the lighting. Among these many plant medicines is the dandelion, whose variety of uses makes it one of the more popular medicines. Dandelions were often used by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and have been used in Chinese medicine for over a thousand years. They came to America on the Mayflower, brought for their medicinal benefits. Before the inventions of the lawn, dandelions were praised as a bounty of food, medicine, and magic (Sanchez 2007). Dandelions grow anywhere that has an abundance of sunlight, such as lawns, sidewalks, and roads, and are difficult to get rid of because of their long roots. Against many gardener s judgement, growing dandelions in a garden can be beneficial (Sanchez 2007). Their roots loosen the soil making it easier to grow plants and their leaves, flowers, and roots can be harvested to cure a variety of illnesses. Dandelions grown as a crop should be spaced about a foot apart and kept clean by hoeing. The tops should be cut off so the land will not be smothered by the weed when the seeds appear. Dandelions can be used as a stimulant to our bodies, but are used mainly for the urinary organs, and also used to treat kidney and liver disorders. The foundations of this study are cemented with the constructivist beliefs and assumptions that learners actively construct their meaning and alter their prior knowledge by interacting with the learning environment (Jansen Land, 2012). Constructivist approach to learning emphasizes the importance of actively building meaning by interacting with the learning environment and integrating new information into the learners existing knowledge (Dede, 2008; Dabbagh, 2006; Colburn, 2000). Students learn better when they are actively engaged in learning process (Jaakkola, 2012). In inquiry learning environments students learn by actively participating in the learning process, interacting with learning materials and building new knowledge upon their prior knowledge (von Glasersfeld, 1989; Jaakkola, 2012). Consequently inquiry contexts are more effective (Brown, 1997; Bybee, 2000; Edelson, Gording, Pea, 1999; Haury, 1993; Jaakkola, 2012), than traditional learning by just discharging the knowledge towards the learner (Ernest, 1995). Asad s Theory Of White Norm And The Ku Klux Klan White supremacy is a term that is traditionally defined as the belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. White supremacy is a deep seeded ideology that, throughout history, has impacted religion, theocracy and the structure of our organizations. Although Christianity isn t inherently white supremacy, white supremacy can be analyzed as a religious event, as it involves the power that is synonymous with religion and the liminal state of traditional rites of passage. This paper will explain Asad s theory of power, summarize Turner s account of liminality, and analyze white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) using these two theoretical models.
