In 1861, the Sunflower State was adopted into the USA as the 34th state. It is
home to the geographical center of the United States and not to forget the largest
ball of twine ever recorded. With its vast plains and prariers Kansas is the largest
producer of wheat and is known as the bread basket state . Many schools in this
agricultural governance still base their hours around the harvest schedule allowing
the children to lend a hand in the tradition of family farming. There is currently over
2.8 million Kansans calling this prairie land home. Kansans are predominantly white,
Christian, republicans and have an average income of about 50k with about 11%
below poverty. Recent educational report cards show the graduation rate is 86% with
African American students and students with disabilities had the lowest percentage
rate in the combined curriculum scores.
When analyzing the reading scores within the state of Kansas I found that overall the
students are passing with at least 85% of the students tested are at or above the
standards. It seems Kansas is not meeting its levels within its racial divides though.
Almost 16% of African American students are not meeting any standards in the
reading level but only 3.3% of Kansas white students are failing. These statistics do
not completely match up with the economically disadvantage students, over.5% of
these students are at least meeting the basic requirements asked of them in the 2009
AYP. Students with disabilities who are given the same tests as all students are also
falling below our line of standards.
Our numbers are a bit different when comparing our reading assessment scores. Over
87% of the students tested at least met or exceeded the state standards. As shown
before many of the children who are not meeting the criteria set are our African
American students. Only 66% of these students are meeting the requirements set by
our AYP.

What Makes a Word, a Word?
If a new word or neologism is not created by a lexicographer (the person who
compiles a dictionary), or any individual, then who decides what words will be a
part of the English language? The speakers of the language are who choose what
words are used and which are not. It s the day to day users of the language
introducing and maintaining words, this is what evolves and shapes the way the
English language is spoken and understood by the people who use it.
There are a number ways in which a new word can be introduced into any given
language, in this post I will focus on the English language and the techniques
commonly used to make new words in the language. Not only does a word need to be
created to be part of a language but it needs to be used as part of the language
regularly to be well recognised and accepted by the speakers, and there for an official
word in the language.
Shared Words
The first way a word can be made is through a different language sharing or
donating a word with another language or country. An English example of this
technique would be the word ninja which English speakers took from the Japanese
and now is sometimes recognised as an English word. Once the word is taken from
a language the pronunciation and origins of the word become lost with time and
people can forget or are not able to tell that the word has foreign origins. Similarly

How One Simple Tree In William Shakespeare s The Tree
The big idea of my poem is how one simple place can have such an important
meaning in one s life. In this poem, I used the poetic device of Anaphora with the
words The tree. I believe this enhances my poem because it really emphasizes how
meaningful the tree in throughout the entire story and how no matter where the
two boys are in their life, they both seem to find their way back to the tree. Also, I
used the poetic device of an oxymoron when I wrote alone together. Using these
words show that as young kids, Hassan and Amir didn t need anyone else, they
were best friends that all they needed was each other and one and others company.
Another poetic device I used was personification when I wrote the tree that learned
and the names of the bark split apart and went their separate ways. Using
personification in this poem helped to show that other people/things realized how
strong the two boys friendship was and that they almost became one. Also, I used
the simile grew like seeds planted in the ground because this relates the boys to the
tree in the way that they come from a seed in the ground. This creates more of a
bond between the boys and the tree because it makes it feel like they are more of
equals. Finally, I used alliteration when I wrote, late loving lifelong... and this
conveys multiple of the feeling Amir has for Hassan. Throughout this poem, I used
the ages of the pomegranatetree to relate the the ages of the boys friendship. A
quote that relates to the beginning of the poem is, One summer day, I used one of
ali s kitchen knives to carve our names on it: Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul.
Those words made it formal: the tree was ours. After school Hassan and I climbed its
branches and snatched its blood red pomegranates. After we d eaten the fruitand
wiped out hands on the glass, I would read to Hassan (Hosseini 27 28). This shows
that boys friendship at the beginning and how strongly they cared for each other. As

The two paintings I am going to discuss are The Sower (Top, Right) and The
Gleaners (Top, Left) by Jean Francois Millet. Both paintings are in the Realist style
with The Sower painted in 1849 and The Gleaners in 1857. The Sower measures at
101 X 80.7cm whereas The Gleaners is 83.5 X 110cm. This essay will look at how
these paintings are representative of Realism through their social and political

perceptual vision. Similarly in The Sower the colours used to represent the light of

Discussion
After looking at the results, it is easy to see that as pipe got shorter, the fundamental
frequency increases. A 0.340m length pipe gave a frequency of 236Hz, while a
0.100m length pipe gave a frequency of 714Hz.
Conclusion
The results shown above prove the proposed theory to be correct.
If I were to do this experiment in the future I would use multiple pipes of different
lengths rather than using a piston to alter the length. I think this would give more
accurate results. I would also consider using pipes of different materials to see if it
has any effect on the results.

Summary Of The Diary Of A Young Girl By Anne Frank

Tuesday, August 1, 1944, Annelies (Anne) Marie Frank wrote her last entry of her
diary. Little did she know, her last written words would send a chilling message to
all those who read her story in remembrance of her. Being only 16 years old when
she died in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp in Germany, Anne was one of
nearly 6 million people who were killed in the systematic execution of Jews under
Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. For my summer reading project, I chose to read The
Diary of a Young Girl, which is the definitive edition of her diary that she kept for
two years as she neared the day of her family s captivity on August 4, 1944.
Over the summer, I visited the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in California
and read upon the statistics of the amount of Jews killed under Hitler s beliefs. The
museum was established in 1961 by Holocaust survivors and is devoted towards
never forgetting the unbelievable tragedy. I chose to write my report on how I
believed Anne Frank would continue on with her life if she had survived. While I
was reading, I was astonished at how she worded such simple tasks, and the mind
of a young girl, going through what so many had suffered and endured. I find it
fascinating how her mind worked so intricately and the details she noted after
common things such as arguments, and failure. Living with seven other people
with different characteristics and mindsets, Anne wrote down every single aspect
of her days and gave an insight as to what life was like in the hidden annex where
eight total Jews had hid for over two years. She did all of this because she longed
for someone who shared the same interests and understanding. However, after
reading her diary, I believe I am one of the many people who were left wondering
what Annelies Marie Frank would do with her life if she were to survive the
dastardly event of the Holocaust.
In many accounts of Anne s diary, she expresses her feelings in deeper matters than

also causes acid rain which has disastrous effects on forestry and wildlife. Typical
uncontrolled power plants that produce coal emit up to 14, 000 tons of sulfur
dioxide a year while those plants with emission controls will only emit up to 7, 000

patriarchal discourse, a discourse effective only in its entirety and is thus unable to

The suffrage movement has entailed a long history of fighting for equality. Many
organizations have developed, along with numerous campaigns and protests. The
suffrage movement in the United States has dated back to the early 1840 s. During
this time, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton organized the Seneca Falls
Convention. Shortly after in 1951, Susan B. Anthonyjoined the two previously states
activists and they founded the Women s National Loyal League (WNLL) in the main
attempt to abolish slavery and gain full citizenship for African Americans and
women. Shortly after slavery was abolished, Anthony and Stanton formed the
National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA), in 1869. This was delegated as
being a more radical organization compared to the American Women Suffrage
Association, founded by Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, and Josephine Ruffin.
However, by 1890 these two organizations decided they would be more effective if
they joined to form just one prominent organization: the National American Women
Suffrage Association (NAWSA) ( Women s Suffrage Movement ).
After several years of Stanton as president of NAWSA, Carrie Chapman Catt took
over this position in 1900 and served as president until 1904 and again in 1915
through 1926. Catt is said to be the driving force [behind] the organization ( Women s

History Commedia dell arte was developed in 16th and 17th century. It was a form
of comedy that started around Italy. The actors improvised text based scenarios so
they didn t have to write down scripts. It came from people first starting performing
in the streets and markets of the Italian Renaissance, but it can be traced all the
way back to Ancient Greek. The actors wore masks and colourful clothes to draw
attention to them and their acrobatic skills increased that chance. They soon
teamed up in troupes with more actors and moveable stages to establish it as a
genre of its own. These performances were open to all classes from the rich to the
pore. They didn t care about language barriers because they used mime, stereotyped
