Sympathy verses Judgment in Carol Ann Duffy s poem Salome
The poem Salome by Carol Ann Duffy is written from the perspective of Salome, a promiscuous
woman who is retelling her drunken night. Although it is unclear whom Salome is speaking to,
she tells her story using informal, colloquial language, as if conversing to a group of friends.
Duffy uses Biblical allusions, which suggest that the speaker can be considered a reflection of the
Biblical character Salome, who appears in the New Testament and is infamous for demanding the
head of John the Baptist. Although Duffy seems to be retelling the traditional story of Salome, she
depicts Salome as a modern figure. The following analysis will explore the Biblical allusions in
Duffy s poem, which help to determine what the poem is about, and moreover will explore how
Duffy uses the dramatic monologue to provoke the reader to have sympathy for Salome. I thus
contend that Duffy takes the reader into the mind of Salome, a character that has traditionally been
portrayed as an evil, amoral woman, in order for the reader to view her from a perspective of
sympathy rather than judgment.
As stated, rather than depicting Salome as a completely wicked and cynical character, Duffy
provides indications that the reader is meant to sympathize with her. This is hinted at in the
language that Duffy uses and the different tones in each stanza, proposing that Salome s thoughts
are changing

The three standards of evidence are preponderance of evidence, clear and convincing evidence,
and beyond a reasonable doubt. In the Cruzan case the court stated that they did not have
convincing evidence of Nancy s wishes because she did not have a living will. In the Cruzan

have had more evidence if her friends would have known her maiden name was Cruzan verses
Davis. I think that this was their convincing evidence. However it is sad that it took so long for

I attended the Vagina Monologues on Monday February 27th. It was very informative and
intriguing event. There were moments where I would laugh, while other moments I shed a tear.
This event involved 5 women sitting in chairs side by side. Each one told a story of who they
were portraying to be. One story involved rape, one was about an old lady, another was about a
preexisting lawyer, and many others. Their attire consisted of coordinated black white and red

When looking at Kilbourne s two premises it is easy to agree with premise one, that commercials
do degrade women, but there doesn t seem to be the connection between women being degraded, to
these commercials being manipulative. In the printed ad Cigarette Women, there is a small picture
with a male and female actress, not very clear, but still noticeable. To the ignorant eye, it would
be viewed as harmless, but in the eyes of Kilbourne it speaks so much more. The position of the
women in the picture could be seen as helpless and dependent on the man who has a powerful
stance. The clothes on these two models could be seen in a similar way with the man being fully
clothed in a business, while the woman is in a short white dress. These are two factors that do show

Manipulation can be seen with having the traits of being forceful, by being tricky, or to falsify for
