Asian American Stereotype
For over a hundred years, stereotypes of Asian Americans have dramatically changed from being
viewed as uneducated poor laborers to being characterized as successful educated minority. It has
changed from negativity to positivity. According to the article Outwhiting the whites : An examination
of the persistence of Asian Americans model minority discourse, Asian Americans were stereotyped as
the Yellow Peril before. It was a fear that Asian Americans were going to take power in America.
Japanese Americans had lost a lot during World War II. They were imprisoned in internment camps,
lost their homes, land, and property. After the World War II, people started to change their views on
Asian Americans. The Japanese Americans were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second article I read was, The new whiz kids by Brand, D. According to the article, Asian
Americans have set a standard for Americans on education. A researcher at the U.S. Department of
Education found that Asian Americans spend more time on their homework, take more advanced
classes, and graduate with more credits than other students. They are known to be high achievers. The
stereotype of Asian Americans as the model minority group is not true. It is simply because they work
harder. Because of their cultural background and how they were raised, they are really focused on
their education. They view education as the key to success. It s a matter of dedication, family support
and discipline, says Julliard President Joseph Polisi. He believes that Asians are not naturally talented
but because of their hard work, they are able to be successful in what they are doing. Asian American
children are greatly influenced by their parents to study hard and get a good degree because the
advantage the American educational system has in store for them. Asian American parents expect a lot
of educational success from their children because of the sacrifice they have to make for their children
to be successful in the future. Because of what they have been taught, asking for help is not easy. They
have been taught to not show any emotions and be

Themes In The Chrysanthemums
In John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums , the setting plays a significant role in the mood and themes
of the short story. Set in the 1930s a period of time also known as the Great Depression in Salinas
Valley, California, the tale revolves around the utter loneliness experienced by the protagonist, Elisa
Allen, who is closed off from the rest of the world not only by the land in which she lives, but also by
the stifling and sexist social expectations for women in her time. The story itself begins with a
description of the high gray flannel fog that that surrounds the valley on every side... like a lid , with
the only light being the pale, cold sunshine on the other side of the river. In the middle of this desolate
terrain, Mrs. Allen is an anomaly a sharp, eager woman or whose energy even the chrysanthemum
stems [seem] too small and easy . The oppressive fog, which makes the great valley [into] a closed pot
, reminds the reader of how trapped Elisa is; thus, the landscape combines with the imposed gender
norms and patriarchal views of the twentieth century to create a melancholy, claustrophobic tone that
echoes through the story. From the very beginning, Steinbeck emphasizes the smothering essence of
Elisa s life, not only due to the expectations and limitations placed on her because of her gender, but
also as a parallel to the restrictive nature of the setting.
Henry Allen is a complex character whose role in The Chrysanthemums is easily overlooked in
comparison to that of his wife Elisa, or the tinker; in the scenes that the reader witnesses, there is
always an unspoken boundary between Henry and his wife, a lack of intimacy that is rare for most
marriages. There are many instances where Henry tries to provide a more substantial, fulfilling
opportunity for his wife; he offers to allow her to work out in the orchard and raise some apples as
large as her chrysanthemums, in which he takes an interest only to say that they are big . Clearly, he
realizes that Elisa is capable of much more work than she does, and he also does understand her joy
and gift with [growing] things on a superficial level; however, he is as oppressive as the society that
forces the limitations on his wife, because

Notes On The Mortgage Loans Essay
The mortgage loan is the product that allows him to have the necessary quantity to buy or to
rehabilitate a housing or another building.
As we said already, the credit companies demand a guarantee before granting a loan. In case of the
mortgage ones, the holder of the loan puts of guarantee (mortgage) the proper building, which will go
on to the financial institution in case of non payment. In addition to this mortgage guarantee you offer,
as in a personal loan, its personal guarantee.
Characteristics
The real guarantee of the mortgaged good provides of major safety to the operation, what supposes
less risk for the financial institution. For it, and for the high quantities that are requested to buy to him
a house, the period for its return are more lengths and the interest rates lower than those of the
personal loans. Both elements characterize especially to the mortgage loans.
A mortgage loan has to go associated to a notebook or operative checking account addressed to the
borrowers. Namely it will have to have one open it counts at sight in the one that will pay the amount
of the loan and will receive from him the payment of the monthly quotas.
Owed in the long run duration and economic amount of the loan, the hiring of a mortgage is one of the
most important financial operations for a family or individual.
Forms of mortgage loans
The interest rate is the price that the entities receive for giving its money. The banks can grant
mortgage loans to a fixed, variable

Exploring The Role Of Hearing Loss In The 1940 s
Hearing serves a crucial benefit for understanding the world around us. During the 1940 s, Dr.
Ramsdell realized that hearing serves four crucial function; symbolically we are informed or
entertained, aesthetically hearing is naturally pleasing, warningly we are alerted or prepared,
primitively we are aware of our surroundings [1]. The ear is typically divided into three sections, used
to simplify the hearing process. The first section, or the outer ear, is composed of the auricle (skin
covered cartilage), the auditory canal, and the tympanic membrane (the outer layer of the eardrum).
The middle ear section contains the eardrum, tympanic cavity, and the ossicles. These ossicles are
three small bones often referred to as malleus (hammer), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to HearingLoss.org, more one in every five Americans suffer from some form of hearing
loss, that s about 50 million Americans. By the age of 65, 1/3 of all Americans suffer from hearing
loss [5]. Because of the large size of affected patients, developing and improving hearing correctional
methods is an ever growing and advancing field of study. While there exist several solutions to a wide
variety hearing problems, we are going to discuss Middle Ear Replacements in this report. Middle Ear
Implants and replacements aim to correct sensorineural hearing issues. Often times, patients will elect
to receive a middle ear implant instead of dealing with the expense and hassle of traditional hearing
aids. Recently, the FDA has approved a middle ear transducer implant called the Vibrant Sound
bridge. The Sound bridge operates by connecting a Floating Mass Transducer to the incus (anvil)
bone. This transducer is connected to external audio processor that is discretely attached externally
above the ear. When the external processor receives a soundwave, a signal is transmitted to the
internal transducer. The transducer then vibrates in such a way that mimics natural middle ear
amplifications

I Don t Remember Much Before It All Went Dark
I don t remember much before it all went dark. I think I was in a bus. Something like a crash and lots
of screaming, a feeling of weightlessness. Then nothing. Now I m in this beeping place. I can t tell
where I am because I can t open my eyes. It s kind of funny. I can definitely feel that there s
something heavy and warm on top of me, and can hear the beep, beep, beep, next to me. But I can t
talk or move. Now and then people come and examine my head and I try to talk to them. I can t seem
to open my eyes. Can someone tell me what happened to them? I try to say but I can t seem to get my
vocal chords to respond. I guess I ll have to wait until next time. But these people, they know what
they re doing. They always come at the same time and poke in the same place. With their hands and
sometimes with something sharp. They don t say a lot. They come, prod, and leave with a sigh. It s
rather strange. Someone opened my eye today and shone a light in it. It was bright and I couldn t tell
them to stop. Also, did you know that your eye can stick to your eyelid if you don t open them for long
enough. I do now. It didn t hurt though, just felt good to unstick it. Someone s been holding my hand
and talking to me. It really helps pass the boredom since I can t move or talk. I think it s my mom. She

Analysis Of The Movie Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor
Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell is a nonfiction memoir told from his view of the war and what
really happened during Operation Red Wings. Peter Berg directed the movie Lone Survivor based off
what Luttrell wrote in his memoir. Although the movie is based on the novel, there are subtle
differences between the movie both Luttrell and Berg made in the memoir and movie. These various
differences not only change the view and knowledge of this event but also the audiences
understanding of the real history of Operation Red Wings. When audiences watched the movie or read
the memoir they believe everything is correct and accurate. But Luttrell and Berg have subtle
differences between their two works. The first difference is that Luttrell nearly dies in the opening and
closing of the film. The film opens with a voice over and Marcus Luttrell is airlifted back to military
base. As the plane lands, Marcus Luttrell literally dies while they are trying to save him. The script of
the movie shows the Surgical pack working franticly [sic] to save Luttrell ...Pushing in on the flat line.

Observation And Analysis Of A Hispanic Infant
Observation and Analysis of a Hispanic Infant Our Lady of the Lake University SOWK 7328 I)
Introduction Jace is the pseudonym the parents chose for the anonymity of this youth. Jace means
healing in Spanish and was chosen because every time the youth smiles his mother says it heals her
and makes her happy no matter what. Jace was born in 2015 to a mixed family, his father is half
Hispanic and half African American and the mother is half African American and half Caucasian, but
Jace definitely takes after his father. Jace looks almost identical to the pictures of his father at the same
age, Jace will be one year old this month. Prior to this observation research was done into the
developmental stages of an infant and upon observation Jace seems to fit the normal progressive state
of birth to one year old would go through. He is smart, charismatic, creative, happy, but maybe a little
spoiled as he is the baby of the family. Jace was the last baby to be born and the third male out of the
other five siblings. Anthony has two other children from a previous relationship who live with their
mother, one child is an eighteen year old male and the other is a seventeen year old female. The other
four siblings live in the home with Jace, he has an older brother who is sixteen, a sister who is thirteen,
a brother who is eleven, and another sister who is eight years old. Anthony and Jeanine are the parents

Teens Committing Violent Crimes
According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention show that the number of
Juveniles arrested for committing a violent crime add up to 53,500 in 2014 alone. The crime rate of
kids committing violent crimes has gone down, but kids committing a crime is a problem. Some
people think that juveniles that commit murder or any other violent crimes that they should be helped
and rehabilitated. People also want to abolish sentencing juveniles to life in prison. All Juveniles that
commit violent crimes should be punished, therefore life in prison should not be abolished for
Juveniles who commit murder.
People have argued that the reason why teens commit crimes is because teen brains are not fully
developed. In Jennifer Jenkins article On Punishment and Teen Killers Jenkins emphasizes If brain
development were the reason, then teens would kill at roughly the same rates all over the world,
Jenkins clearly means that if this problem was caused because juveniles brains, then a lot ... Show

That family suffers the loss forever, meanwhile the person who killed their family member only
receives a punishment that he/she may regret and find it easy to murder again. In Jenkins article she
mentions that her youngest sister and her sister s husband were murdered by a juvenile while her sister
was pregnant. She then mentions He reported to a friend, who testified at his trial, about his thrill kill
that he just wanted to see what it would feel like to shoot someone , why should people like this get a
second life when the people they killed don t and in this case, the unborn child never even got a
chance.
Therefore, life in prison should not be abolished for Juveniles who commit murder. Teenager s brain
not being fully developed has nothing to do with murder. And why should people be afraid to not see

No, David ! By David Shannon
Imagine your child is always testing your limits by performing mischievous actions. The child is
coloring on the walls of their bedroom, playing baseball in the house, climbing on the furniture,
bringing in dirt from outside, etc. How would you react? With this in mind, No, David! by David
Shannon uses the relationship between pictures and words to demonstrate predictable negative
comments in words from an adult figure in association to relatable child like behaviors in pictures.
Initially, the cover and title page of the book both play a key role in the layout of the story. On the
cover, the artistic style of the illustration looks like a cartoon and a painting. This style is very realistic
because of the situation portrayed on the cover; yet playful at the same time because of its comical
vibe. The cover also looks three dimensional and the author seems to be using a straightforward
perspective of art. This idea is led be true because the child, wall, and table with the fishbowl are all
facing towards the reader. The title is also as large in font as the child and fish bowl are. This shows
that the cover is relatively proportional in both text and pictures.
As a result, the child on the cover has sharp teeth and an almost evil grin as he is attempting to pick up
the fish bowl off of a table that is above his head. Secondly, looking at the fish; their facial expressions
show that they are fearful of what is occurring. Both fish have open mouths, as well as eyes and

Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain Essay
Marcel Duchamp s Fountain by Sarah Shea HUMN406 01 Professor Nelson
Marcel Duchamp s Fountain People often ask what constitutes good art. Who decides whether or
not a piece is art and whether it is good art or not? Marcel Duchamp challenged popular notions of his
day about what art actually is. Duchamp, a French artist living in New York at the turn of the century,
believed that it was up to the artist to determine what art is. Duchamp is most famous for a type of
sculpture he created called readymades 1. Readymades are ordinary functional household objects that
have either been joined to other objects, or chosen to stand alone as sculpture. Examples of his
readymades include a coat hanger nailed to the floor of his studio, a hat ... Show more content on

There was much ado over these happenings. Articles appeared in major newspapers regarding it, but
still no one knew who Richard Mutt was. An article also appeared in The Blind Man, an art journal
Duchamp himself published. The anonymous author of the article defended the Fountain as art and
went on to say The only works of art America has given are her plumbing and her bridges. 3 This was
the early 1900 s, so at this time the idea of modern art was still fairly new. People were starting to get
use to it, but were not comfortable enough to be introduced to something such as Fountain. A
bathroom fixture, especially a urinal, was considered too inappropriate, and was even said to be
immoral. In that same article in The Blind Man, the author defends Fountain on this matter by saying,
Now Mr. Mutt s fountain is not immoral, that is absurd, no more than a bath tub is immoral. It is a
fixture that you see every day in plumbers show windows. This is a very true statement; after all,
bathtubs are not considered immoral are they? However, it being a urinal, and because of its reference
to unpleasant bodily functions, it may seem inappropriate to have to study and examine it for any
period of time, like art is suppose to be studied. This is certainly valid reasoning. Perhaps, however,
because the urinal was flipped onto its back, and called Fountain rather than Urinal , it is divorced
from the whole bathroom scene,

6.03 Calorimetry Lab
The objective of this lab was first to convert the mass of a compound to the number of moles and
number of molecules and then determine the concentration of salt and its component. The first thing
we did was get the mass of an empty container by using a scale and it came out to be 16.87g. Next
thing we did was pick a substance which in this case it was Potassium Chloride and placed it on the
scale to get a total mass of 31.20g. The container the Potassium Chloride was in only had a mass of
16.87g which means that the mass of the substance was 14.33g. To convert the mass to the number of
moles we took the amount of the substance 14.33g and divided it by the mass of Potassium Chloride
74.55g and figured out that the number of moles was 0.192. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Then we took 8.35mL of salt water and put it in the evaporating dish which we placed over a Bunsen
burner until all the water was dried out. The mass of the evaporating dish with the solid was 83.39g
which means the mass of the sodium chloride was 0.622g. Next we took the mass and divided it by the
volume of the solution which was 8.35mL and got 0.074 as the original concentration. To the get
molarity of the salt solution we had to divide the concentration by the mass of the sodium chloride and
then multiply by 1000mL to get 1.3M of salt solution. Final thing we had to do was determine the
number ions present in 8.35mL so we took 1.3 moles of NaCl and divided it by 1000mL then
multiplied by 8.5mL to get 0.01105 number of Na ions and Cl. The data was as I expected for part A
because I followed step by step instructions on how to convert from grams to moles and moles to
number of molecules and for part B my answer of 1.3 molarity of salt solution matched with key
provided on LoudCloud. During this lab I learned how to convert the mass of a compound to the
number of moles and then to the number of molecules, I also learned how to determine the

How Far Was Germany Responsible For The First World War
In this essay, I would like to try and explain in my opinion which country is the most responsible for
the First World War. I have arranged them by putting the country which is the most responsible at the
top and the least responsible at the bottom. 1) Germany (Most Responsible) I feel that Germany is the
most responsible for starting the First World War for many reasons. Firstly I would like to begin from
the start when Bismarck united all the small kingdoms into one empire. During that, on the other side
of the English Channel, Britain was a powerful empire. During that, Britain controlled over Β½ of the
world and an enormous trading system. After looking and comparing with Britain, the Kaiser and the
Germans became jealous. Although the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the Boers won the first war and then Britain won the second one, Germany tried backing the Boers
by helping. The British did not like the way the Germans were backing the Boers so they decided not
to be friends with the Germans and decided to look for another friendly nation in Europe. After the
Boer War, the Kaiser kept provoking the British. There was the Naval Arms Race when the British
launched the Dreadnought Class ships. As the Germans had many shipyards on the East side of
Denmark, they built the Kiel Canal so they can transport the finished warships to the West and that
was a type of threat to Britain. Another threat in the Naval Arms Race was they provoked Britain by
building similar Dreadnought Class ships. The Germans were very quick at building them but then
they stopped a few years later and Britain had built more warships than Germany. There was also the
risk theory where the Germans believed that by expanding their navy, the British would think it would
be too risky to fight the German Navy. That was a little threat to Britain as well. Britain also used the
two power standard where its navy had to be bigger than the second and third

Our Nation s Critical Infrastructure
In the past sixteen years the United States has seen significant changes to the national policies that
protect the population and its critical infrastructure. Two main agencies that arose from the 911
Attacks were the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Homeland Defense
(HLD). These two agencies are responsible for protecting countless potential terrorist targets, millions
of citizens, and the thousands of miles of U.S boarders. How can two government agencies protect so
many assets? This paper will explore the two agencies and identify key roles, responsibilities,
resources, and operations. It will highlight the efforts shared between the two agencies and provide the
authors own definition of the DHS. Lastly, this paper will identify our nation s critical infrastructure
and how it intertwines with the DHS and HLD, by discussing the resources needed to operate
successfully. These two agencies may be separate organizations but they have much more in common
than one might think. Let s begin by looking at the primary mission of each agency. According to
classroom text, The DHS is responsible for preparation of, prevention of, deterrence of, preemption of,
defense against, and response to threats and aggression directed towards U.S. territory, sovereignty,
domestic population, and infrastructure; as well as crisis management, and consequence management

Research Paper On Queueing Theory
Queueing Theory and Adaptive Scheduling Algorithm for Real Time Operating System Abstract
Queueing theory is the mathematical study of waiting lines, or queues. In queueing theory a model is
constructed so that queue lengths and waiting time can be predicted. Queueing theory is generally
considered a branch of operations research because the results are often used when making business
decisions about the resources needed to provide a service. EDF (Earliest Deadline First) has been
proved to be optimal scheduling algorithm for single processor realtime operating systems when the
systems are preemptive and underloaded. The limitation of this algorithm is, its performance decreases
exponentially when system becomes slightly overloaded. ACO ... Show more content on

Operating systems may feature up to three distinct scheduler types: a long term scheduler (also known
as an admission scheduler or high level scheduler), a mid term or medium term scheduler, and a short
term scheduler. The names suggest the relative frequency with which their functions are performed.
Process scheduler
The process scheduler is a part of the operating system that decides which process runs at a certain
point in time. It usually has the ability to pause a running process, move it to the back of the running
queue and start a new process; such a scheduler is known as preemptive scheduler, otherwise it is a
cooperative scheduler.
Long term scheduling
The long term scheduler, or admission scheduler, decides which jobs or processes are to be admitted to
the ready queue (in main memory); that is, when an attempt is made to execute a program, its
admission to the set of currently executing processes is either authorized or delayed by the long term
scheduler. Thus, this scheduler dictates what processes are to run on a system, and the degree of
concurrency to be supported at any one time whether many or few processes are to be executed
concurrently, and how the split between I/O intensive and CPU intensive processes is to be handled.
The long term scheduler is responsible for controlling the degree of

An Operating System Based On The Linux Kernel
Introduction
In Computer Hardware, we have touched on subjects of hardware, software, personnel, and their
implementations. Our group consists of Brad Soergel, Kai Javois, Maan Ababtain, Nuh Hamilton, and
Lakeem Duporte. Our group was charged with utilizing the Android operating system in the business
of our choice. We decided to implement this operating system in the Management, Deployment, and
day to day activities of a Tourism office. Due to the need for mobility, we decided Android would be
best for the integration of our mobile devices. We were allotted a start up budget of $100,000. Our
Chief Financial Officer, Lakeem Duporte has managed our funds and regulated spending throughout
the development process. Our general manager, Brad Soergel was the lead in charge of our
infrastructure and office accommodations. Maan Ababtain, our computer support technician handles
our technical issues. Nuh Hamilton, our network specialist maintains our servers and also enforces
privacy and security protocols.
Android
Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel. This means that it uses the core
components of the Linux operating system as a basis for its programming. Google, the creator of
Android, took the open source code of the Linux kernel to create its operating system. (Hoffman, n.d.)
Even though Android uses much of the base code for Linux, it has been extensively modified to better
work on mobile devices and any other hardware Google wants it to.

It Doesn t Matter By Nicholas Carr
Nicholas G. Carr initiated a discussion about the strategic importance of IT spending of companies in
his Article IT Doesn t Matter published in Harward business review , 2003. He also advises to reduce
the spending on IT infrastructure by arguing the fact that IT become commodity rather than a strategic
advantage. Diminishing strategic advantage of the IT as explained by Nicholas Carr is not a broad
view of the topic and Author has limited the scope of IT with mostly hardware part and not discussed
the various advantages a firm can gain with use of information technology in a whole. Author suggests
that business corporations should spend less on the IT infrastructure by arguing that IT is no more a
strategic advantage and is similar to other commodity which is assessable to each and every one at
market place. Author advices organizations to spend less on the IT capital, to wait and learn from the
mistake of competitors and also evaluate the risks associated with the implementation of IT
infrastructure. Author has provided the details of it spending and financial outcome of the industry.
Here we need to understand that financial out come from an IT investment cannot be expected
immediately or in the same financial year. First of all capital goods are very different from the
information good. Business benefitted from the Information technology not only based on the how
much they spent on the IT rater than how their IT operations are aligned with their

of color, Black women very specifically, are able to conduct their lives. Black women in particular, are
vulnerable to these systems in a way unlike any other body in America. Thinking back on the writings
of Beth E. Richie, Angela Davis, and Audre Lord, I now see Assata Shakur s Affirmation in a new
light. Affirmation is a poem that speaks to the pain and suffering Black bodies have endured, and even
through all of this pain, it speaks of optimism. I argue, that through the lens of Black feminism, we
can re examine many organizations and institutions in a way that can be truly be more inclusive of
people of all walks of life. If systems were created with regard for the most targeted groups of people
and not just the majority , we may truly see inclusive settings and we can benefit from the membership
of people from different races, class, gender identity, sexual orientation and age in these institutions.
In her autobiography, Assata Shakur said It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win.
We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains. This leads
right into what I believe Affirmation is about. What I first

Analysis Of Shooting An Elephant
Sometimes, the people around a man force him to give up his freedom by giving in to what the
audience expects. The person wants to make the audience pleased and wishes to keep his reputation
high. In the short story, Shooting an Elephant , George Orwell, who writes from his own experiences,
describes the life of the narrator, a policeman in a foreign country, Burma. The narrator feels forced to
shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. He does not want to shoot the elephant, but
because the Burmese around him seem determined and excited to see the elephant die, the narrator
feels compelled to do what the natives request to keep his high status and position of authority.
Throughout the time when the narrator has had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Burmese see the narrator with an elephant rifle, they feel excited. With the weapon in the
officer s hand, the villagers anticipated that Orwell plans to shoot the elephant. The Burmese feel as if
they should follow him to the elephant because they want to see if he will actually kill the elephant.
However, from the narrator s perspective, he states, I had no intention of shooting the elephant I had
merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary . In his mind, he wishes that the elephant will
not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the narrator cannot turn
back. Behind him, there was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute.
It blocked the road for a long distance on either side . The villagers expect him to be brave enough to
shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the villagers will laugh and mock him for being afraid to kill
the elephant. The narrator knows that every white man s life in the East, was one long struggle not to
be laughed at . If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack of power over the Burmese.
Therefore, he has no choice.
Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. The
narrator s decision to murder the elephant proves his weakness not his strength; instead, with all the
excited Burmese around him, he was only an absurd puppet

The Handmaid s Tale By Offred
The Handmaid s Tale is similar and relatable to Gender equity/inequity because this book talks about
how Men and women aren t equal. Males tend to have more power over females. The women are
referred to Handmaid s which are also known to take care and breed children. They aren t allowed to
read or write. This honestly is a problem towards society. These women have no hope to stick up for
themselves because they get executed if they try to get free from a place run by Men.
The Handmaid s Tale is such an interesting book with a closely realistic concept of society. Everything
that happened in the book most likely happened one way or another, some of these events were down
in history. It s one of the things that shocked me throughout this book. Women ... Show more content

Girls and women have made major strides since 1990, but they have not yet gained gender equity.
Women are expected to bear children and remain devoted to their husbands. They are also expected to
be obedient, indecisive and weak. The women are confiscated of everything belonging to them
including their bodies, rights, identities and names. In the book, women s bodies are abused , turned
into prostitutes and are portrayed as sex objects throughout the book. For example in the book when

women being raped, beaten up, killed is what the handmaid s are expected to do. There is no hope
what so ever in these women. The women are expected to work, cook and clean the house. Other
times the women are expected to take care of their children and husbands too. This doesn t seem as

This was my first year attending an OAPHERD conference. I have attended various conferences

Susan mentioned to be an example to your students. She said that if there is a choice between taking

Ray Bradbury s Short Story The Veldt
You hear the great sound of the technology roaming around your house slowly die. Then moments
later, you feel a rage inside of you. A rage that you ve never felt before, and has been waiting to come
out. You suddenly want the technology turned back on so you can live your life the way you have been
for your whole life. But when the technology is threatened to stay off, what would you do? Scream,
panic, cry, or kill? This scenario happens to the children in Ray Bradbury s story The Veldt. This story
takes place in the future within a Happy life home that shelters a family of four. George, Lydia,
Wendy, and Peter live in this home altogether, and their whole life revolves around the technology
they own. As the technology is used to threaten ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ray Bradbury helps me, the reader, understand how extravagant these technologies are, and he really
makes you feel attracted to something that is simply created in his fictional story. Bradbury helps me
understand it all a little bit better through descriptive sentences. Specifically this descriptive sentence,
With the children gone, the two men stood studying the lions clustered at a distance, eating with great
relish whatever it was they had caught, taken from Bradbury s story, The Veldt. This descriptive
sentence ultimately describes how vivid the technology is in this time of the future. This sentence
from The Veldt also shows how technology can advance from now to when this story is taken place.
With technology always modernizing, more and more people will want to be more involved with all of
the new devices. Another quote from The Veldt also describes the situation, which is, They walked
down the hall of their soundproofed Happylife Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars
installed, This also shows what extent this family of four will go to in order to get the newest gadgets.
This quote from The Veldt also gives us an idea about how much this family really cared about
spending money on things they want, and think they need . All of the new technologies can really
distract you, and lead you to forget about the things that you should care about a lot more in life.

Position Paper On Abortion
The topic of abortion has become an issue today in the U.S. They have the authority to rule on
whether laws governing abortion are Constitutional or not. The Legislative Branch is, for the most
part, in favor of legalizing abortion because the Senate and the House of Representatives all want
women and fetuses to be protected. The Executive Branch favors abortion because they feel no child
should be terminated in the late stage of a pregnancy. I will now explain how each branch played a
role in making abortion legal under the constitution. First, the judicial branch has seen that laws
blocking abortions are unconstitutional. The case Roe v Wade was the landmark case that contributed
to women being able to have abortions. The United States Supreme Court came down with the
decision of allowing a woman to terminate her pregnancy. The decision was based upon the
Fourteenth Amendment which refers to privacy rights. Also, a judge, Myron H. Thompson, has
declared the Women s Health and Safety Act unconstitutional. The Women s Health and Safety Act
was related to the doctors performing abortions. In the case Planned Parenthood Southeast v. Strange
the right to an abortion is constitutional like any other due process. However, the legislative branch
finds having an abortion unconstitutional in certain circumstances. As early as 1981, the abortion
debate shifted from the courts to Congress. This is when legislative hearings were held on human life

Another individual I explained the social experiment to is my female co worker Jacqueline who is a

Analysis Of Mourning Dove s Under The Whispering Pines
For many decades and centuries, the cultural clashes between the first nation people and the Euro
Canadians have always caused tension to up rise. This goes way back to the late 15th century when
the first European (the English) settlers arrived in eastern Canada claiming the land, followed by the
French. As years went by, more European settlers arrived and this caused more natives to become
marginalized physically (through killings), politically and economically. Mourning Dove s under the
whispering pines conveys some of the negative perspectives, such as viewing the natives as savages or
subhuman. These perspectives are still very common today and still continue to marginalise native
Canadians economically especially native women, as Sky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

American Hurricane
A strong hurricane normally has three factors that make it so destructive, Death, Destruction and the

factors, but what factors made the hurricane s impact so powerful, and what was the impact like The
first of three hurricanes that had a large effect on the New England area is considered a strong
hurricane for three particular reasons. The conditions that made it so powerful, the absurd amount of
human error in a weather system almost riddled with ignorance and the blunt and forceful impact it
had on an unexpecting region. To explain the first condition that made the storm a hurricane, one must
go to the Cape Verde Islands (youtube). The islands sit near a one hundred and twenty foot deep pool
of warm water(youtube). Warm water, being a necessity when creating a hurricane makes it obvious
why this hurricane along with so many others, are formed here(youtube). The hurricane then traveled

Yellow Dung Fly Breeding
Success of male yellow dung fly breeding.
Introduction
Looking at the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria, it is seen that the species experiences sexual
dimorphism in the form of both size and colour. This gives changes between the males and females
that are specially adapted to give them the best chance of producing offspring. Males are considerably
larger than the females and have clearly defining yellow hair along the abdomen, whereas females are
smaller and are more of an olive green colour. Copulation for this species occurs on large mammal
faeces as it acts as a source of nutrition for larvae once eggs are hatched. The right to breed with a
female is highly competitive among yellow dung flies and only the most suited mate or the most
opportunistic mate will be able to pass on its sperm. Assessing the size of males is key when looking
at the mating probability of the yellow dung fly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mean HTL of the 4 different male yellow dung fly categories. The mean size for males found on the
faeces is clearly larger than those off the pat, and the mean HTL is the largest in paired males on the
pat.
Looking at Fig 1. it can be speculated that larger males are more successful at copulating, however
with the data presented there is not a large enough sample size over the two sites to confirm this.
Males on the pat are larger on both instances compared to males off the pat but due to overlapping of
error bars, it cannot be stated with confidence that they are indeed more successful. The only
statement that can be made with confidence is that paired males on the pat are considerably larger than
solo males off the pat, this can be stated as the error bars do not overlap. With only one sample of
paired males off the pat, there is no way to know if error bars would overlap with any other group if
the sample size was larger. The paired males off the pat then can be only taken as an estimation
because of this.

Ficciones, by Jorge Luis Borges Essay
In life it is necessary to have fantasy, because without it, life would be dull and meaningless. Life
would be so different without dreams, since they are what motivate humans to keep on moving
forward in order to achieve their goals. This is what Jorge Luis Borges is trying to explain to the
reader in the book Ficciones which is very confusing, but also very deep in meaning. These stories
demonstrate a theme of reality vs. fiction which is fascinating because in many of the readings fantasy
is required at some point to accomplish a purpose or goal. Each unique story hides a meaning in the
text which is a lesson to be learned. The confusion that is caused is similar to a labyrinth in which the

The Mixed Economic System In The United States
All countries around the world have some form of economic system that is there to provide a basis on
which their economies can grow and prosper. Current economic systems are based on growth to
remain stable to be successful. Sustainable economies are when the output is steady over the long term
but may change in the short term an economic system that does not promote growth is going to
collapse. In economics capitalism and socialism influence views on how the economy should be

Economic policies are there to ensure that the economy will remain stable in the future and also ensure
that everything is being run fair and everyone is getting equal opportunity. Mixed economies can enact
policies that benefit both the consumer and business. In a mixed economy the government and market
work together to determine the best policies for future long term stability and growth. During a
recession in a mixed economy the government will put more money and resources into the public
sector, such as repairing roads, building schools and hospitals and create more jobs. The government
will also lower taxes so consumers have more money to spend. (http://econsguide.blogspot.ca/, 2009).
Private sectors main interest is to make a profit and not the state of the economy such as inflation and
unemployment is not their concern although they contribute to it. (http://econsguide.blogspot.ca/,

improve the economic stability. In times of slow growth and recession the government can take
control and regulate the economy to prevent further slow growth and bring the economy back to a
stable state. At the same time corporations are free to manage their own business provided they agree
to the rules and laws set by the government. A mixed economy has more

to shut down over a disagreement seems like a bit of a drastic measure. The shutdown caused many
programs to shutdown, though many more where still able to function. If the shutdown had lasted

But unfortunately many national parks and memorials had to be shut down because without funding
there was no way to cover the costs to stay open. This caused problems with many veterans who
wished to enter the war memorials. This even led to a riot and a break in at a World War 2 Memorial.
Many federal workers were furloughed which basically means that they were let off temporarily till
the government started back up. So large sums of workers were given a vacation, but if the
government had been shut down longer, this could have become a very pressing issue. After the
shutdown some research was done to see just which states where hit the hardest. According to NBC
Washington Virginia was the state that had the hardest impact from the shutdown. Many of Virginias
mortgage loans, on real estate, where backed up with federal funds causing many houses to foreclose.
Virginia was also pushed to the top of the list by being the second largest state that houses the most
veterans. All of this shows that the people in Virginia where impacted the worst from the shutdown.
The biggest problem that still seems to be a very significant issue that the politicians like to toy with is
the damn debt ceiling. Instead of treating the debt ceiling for what it is, a limit that should never be
exceeded, our politicians decide to raise it whenever the debt gets closer. China isn t impressed. This
is an issue that will only spark further shutdowns and should be our highest priority.

Research Approach
This study draws on an array of evidence based literature to promote positive behaviour amongst dual

is music and twisting it around. Shakespeare averts the imagery away from the notion of comparing a
female voice to music, to a more commonsensible comparison. He does this by saying that he loves
his mistress s voice, but counterarguments that music has a far more pleasing sound (l,10). In the last
two lines, (l.13 14) the speaker criticizes the donna angelica. . The lines conclude what the speaker is
trying to tell his mistress throughout the poem. That unlike the false and over exaggerating
comparisons found in the donna angelica, the speaker does not need that, to prove his love. The
speaker emphasizes on the fact that even though his mistress isn t as ideal as the women that are
compared in the donna angelica, he loves his mistress nonetheless. As any she belied with false
compare (l.14) concludes that the whole poem has been a donna angelica mockery.

Compatibility Of Confucianism With The Rule Of Law
Question 8: Compatibility of Confucianism with the rule of law Introduction Since the early days of
man, different societies have had different mechanisms of dealing with individual that go against
accepted norms. These norms formed part of the basic education mechanism that a society practised to
in the past. Foreign practises were however introduced during the colonial error when the colonial
master imposed their own conflict resolution system on the different society. After the assimilation of
the foreign system, researchers have now turned their attention to testing whether those systems are
compatible with the traditionally practised mechanism within a society. A significant example of such
a dilemma is on assessing whether Confucianism is compatible with the rule of law. The two system
represent societies that are different and practised by individual that do not share any historical
relationship. The growth of an international community has led to the adaptation of the rule of law by
most if not all nations in the world. The paper seeks to find out whether Confucianism is compatible
with the rule of law and how the two systems can be adopted by a society. In order to assess the
possibility of compatibility, it is important to first understand how the two system works individually.
The analysis will involve the assessment of the whole functionality of the two policies. Confucianism
Confucianism refers to the social, ethical and political teaching that were developed

Who Was Responsible For The St. Bartholomew s Day Massacre
Why have historians produced such different accounts of who or what was responsible for the St.
Bartholomew s Day Massacre? August 25, 1572, marked the infamous day of the St. Bartholomew s
Day Massacre. The slaughter of Gaspard de Coligny and several dozen Huguenot leaders, followed by
the murder of thousands of people in the streets of Paris that day set off tremendous shock waves
throughout Europe. As Barbara Diefendorf points out, the massacre provides a graphic illustration of
the savagery of the religious strife in France at that time. The question of responsibility of the
Massacre has been much debated amongst contemporaries and historians, each producing a different
account of who was responsible. Whether it was Charles IX, Catherine de Medici, the Guise family,
and other primary political figures who instigated the attacks, one will never know for certain. This is
unfortunately due to the scarcity and the unreliability of the contemporary sources. What this essay
will aim to do is highlight some of the main approaches historians have taken to answer the question
who was responsible for the St. Bartholomew s Day massacres? and what was responsible for the St.
Bartholomew s Day massacres? . I will also attempt to answer why historians have approached their
arguments in such a way. I will do this by focusing on the works of J. E. Neale, N. M. Sutherland,
Mack Holt, Barbara Diefendorf, Natalie Zemon Davis, Philip and Arlene Jouanna. Through analysing
the works

Use of Polarization in Goodbye, Mr. Chips Essay
Use of Polarization in Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Opposites attract. James Hilton uses this fact in Goodbye, Mr. Chips to create tension in the story;
however, he makes greater use of this polarization to develop the character of Chips. Mr. Chips and
Katherine Bridges may be viewed not only as opposites but also as arguments. Hilton uses thesis in
the form of young Chips and antithesis in the form of Katherine Bridges to arrive at synthesis, the
personality and character of the mature schoolmaster.
Hilton portrays young Chips as lacking in confidence. During an interview, Chips, a schoolteacher in
his early twenties, admits to Wetherby, the head of Brookfield, that disciplining young boys was not
one of his strong points at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At forty, Chips considers himself rooted, settled, and quite happy (11).
When Chips is forty eight, an age at which permanence of habits begins to be predictable, Hilton
introduces Katherine Bridges, a young and unemployed governess, to create tension. While on
summer vacation at Wasdale Head, Chips first sees Katherine waving excitedly from a rocky ledge.
He believes that she is stranded and in need of help. In his attempt to rescue her, Chips finds himself
rescued instead of the rescuer, and neither role is one for which he had much relish (20). Katherine,
who typifies the New Woman of the nineties that Chips abhors, feels responsible for Chips s injury
and visits him daily. At first Chips doesn t know what to do with Katherine: he isn t articulate and
doesn t think it worthwhile to contradict her ideas and opinions, so he just listens to her chatter. Soon
Chips looks forward to the glimpse of her safety bicycle careering along the lakeside road (23).
Katherine likes Chips initially because he was so hard to get to know . . . and because his opinions
dated from those impossible seventies and eighties . . . yet were . . . so thoroughly honest . . . (24).
Chips and Katherine fall in love within a week. Prior to their marriage, Katherine tells Chips that she
believes that schoolmastering is an important calling and that

Because of their cultural background and how they were raised, they are really focused on their education. They view education as the key to success. • 3. Themes In The Chrysanthemums In John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums , the setting plays a significant role in the mood and themes of the short story. Set in the 1930s a period of time also known as the Great Depression in Salinas Valley, California, the tale revolves around the utter loneliness experienced by the protagonist, Elisa Allen, who is closed off from the rest of the world not only by the land in which she lives, but also by the stifling and sexist social expectations for women in her time. The story itself begins with a description of the high gray flannel fog that that surrounds the valley on every side... like a lid , with the only light being the pale, cold sunshine on the other side of the river. In the middle of this desolate terrain, Mrs. Allen is an anomaly a sharp, eager woman or whose energy even the chrysanthemum stems [seem] too small and easy . The oppressive fog, which makes the great valley [into] a closed pot , reminds the reader of how trapped Elisa is; thus, the landscape combines with the imposed gender norms and patriarchal views of the twentieth century to create a melancholy, claustrophobic tone that echoes through the story. From the very beginning, Steinbeck emphasizes the smothering essence of Elisa s life, not only due to the expectations and limitations placed on her because of her gender, but also as a parallel to the restrictive nature of the setting. Henry Allen is a complex character whose role in The Chrysanthemums is easily overlooked in comparison to that of his wife Elisa, or the tinker; in the scenes that the reader witnesses, there is always an unspoken boundary between Henry and his wife, a lack of intimacy that is rare for most marriages. There are many instances where Henry tries to provide a more substantial, fulfilling opportunity for his wife; he offers to allow her to work out in the orchard and raise some apples as large as her chrysanthemums, in which he takes an interest only to say that they are big . Clearly, he realizes that Elisa is capable of much more work than she does, and he also does understand her joy and gift with [growing] things on a superficial level; however, he is as oppressive as the society that forces the limitations on his wife, because ... During the 1940 s, Dr. Ramsdell realized that hearing serves four crucial function; symbolically we are informed or entertained, aesthetically hearing is naturally pleasing, warningly we are alerted or prepared, primitively we are aware of our surroundings [1]. The ear is typically divided into three sections, used to simplify the hearing process. The first section, or the outer ear, is composed of the auricle (skin covered cartilage), the auditory canal, and the tympanic membrane (the outer layer of the eardrum). The middle ear section contains the eardrum, tympanic cavity, and the ossicles. These ossicles are three small bones often referred to as malleus (hammer), ... Middle Ear Implants and replacements aim to correct sensorineural hearing issues. Often times, patients will elect to receive a middle ear implant instead of dealing with the expense and hassle of traditional hearing aids. Recently, the FDA has approved a middle ear transducer implant called the Vibrant Sound bridge. The Sound bridge operates by connecting a Floating Mass Transducer to the incus (anvil) bone. The child is coloring on the walls of their bedroom, playing baseball in the house, climbing on the furniture, bringing in dirt from outside, etc. How would you react? With this in mind, No, David! by David Shannon uses the relationship between pictures and words to demonstrate predictable negative comments in words from an adult figure in association to relatable child like behaviors in pictures. Initially, the cover and title page of the book both play a key role in the layout of the story. On the cover, the artistic style of the illustration looks like a cartoon and a painting. This style is very realistic because of the situation portrayed on the cover; yet playful at the same time because of its comical vibe. The cover also looks three dimensional and the author seems to be using a straightforward perspective of art. This idea is led be true because the child, wall, and table with the fishbowl are all facing towards the reader. The title is also as large in font as the child and fish bowl are. This shows that the cover is relatively proportional in both text and pictures. As a result, the child on the cover has sharp teeth and an almost evil grin as he is attempting to pick up the fish bowl off of a table that is above his head. Secondly, looking at the fish; their facial expressions show that they are fearful of what is occurring. Both fish have open mouths, as well as eyes and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain Essay Marcel Duchamp s Fountain by Sarah Shea HUMN406 01 Professor Nelson Marcel Duchamp s Fountain People often ask what constitutes good art. Who decides whether or not a piece is art and whether it is good art or not? Marcel Duchamp challenged popular notions of his day about what art actually is. Duchamp, a French artist living in New York at the turn of the century, believed that it was up to the artist to determine what art is. Duchamp is most famous for a type of sculpture he created called readymades 1. Articles appeared in major newspapers regarding it, but still no one knew who Richard Mutt was. An article also appeared in The Blind Man, an art journal Duchamp himself published. The anonymous author of the article defended the Fountain as art and went on to say The only works of art America has given are her plumbing and her bridges. 3 This was the early 1900 s, so at this time the idea of modern art was still fairly new. People were starting to get use to it, but were not comfortable enough to be introduced to something such as Fountain. A bathroom fixture, especially a urinal, was considered too inappropriate, and was even said to be immoral. In that same article in The Blind Man, the author defends Fountain on this matter by saying, Now Mr. Mutt s fountain is not immoral, that is absurd, no more than a bath tub is immoral. It is a fixture that you see every day in plumbers show windows. This is a very true statement; after all, bathtubs are not considered immoral are they? However, it being a urinal, and because of its reference to unpleasant bodily functions, it may seem inappropriate to have to study and examine it for any period of time, like art is suppose to be studied. This is certainly valid reasoning. Perhaps, however, because the urinal was flipped onto its back, and called Fountain rather than Urinal , it is divorced from the whole bathroom scene, 3 Marcel Duchamp himself most ... Another threat in the Naval Arms Race was they provoked Britain by building similar Dreadnought Class ships. Operating systems may feature up to three distinct scheduler types: a long term scheduler (also known as an admission scheduler or high level scheduler), a mid term or medium term scheduler, and a short term scheduler. The names suggest the relative frequency with which their functions are performed. Process scheduler The process scheduler is a part of the operating system that decides which process runs at a certain point in time. It usually has the ability to pause a running process, move it to the back of the running queue and start a new process; such a scheduler is known as preemptive scheduler, otherwise it is a cooperative scheduler. Long term scheduling The long term scheduler, or admission scheduler, decides which jobs or processes are to be admitted to the ready queue (in main memory); that is, when an attempt is made to execute a program, its admission to the set of currently executing processes is either authorized or delayed by the long term scheduler. Thus, this scheduler dictates what processes are to run on a system, and the degree of concurrency to be supported at any one time whether many or few processes are to be executed concurrently, and how the split between I/O intensive and CPU intensive processes is to be handled. Their work has been focused on the ways in which the intersectionality of gender and sexuality influence the lives of women who live under systems of oppression in the United States. These systems that deeply affect the way bodies of color, Black women very specifically, are able to conduct their lives. Black women in particular, are vulnerable to these systems in a way unlike any other body in America. Thinking back on the writings of Beth E. Richie, Angela Davis, and Audre Lord, I now see Assata Shakur s Affirmation in a new light. Affirmation is a poem that speaks to the pain and suffering Black bodies have endured, and even through all of this pain, it speaks of optimism. I argue, that through the lens of Black feminism, we can re examine many organizations and institutions in a way that can be truly be more inclusive of people of all walks of life. If systems were created with regard for the most targeted groups of people and not just the majority , we may truly see inclusive settings and we can benefit from the membership of people from different races, class, gender identity, sexual orientation and age in these institutions. The person wants to make the audience pleased and wishes to keep his reputation high. In the short story, Shooting an Elephant , George Orwell, who writes from his own experiences, describes the life of the narrator, a policeman in a foreign country, Burma. The narrator feels forced to shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. He does not want to shoot the elephant, but because the Burmese around him seem determined and excited to see the elephant die, the narrator feels compelled to do what the natives request to keep his high status and position of authority. With the weapon in the officer s hand, the villagers anticipated that Orwell plans to shoot the elephant. The Burmese feel as if they should follow him to the elephant because they want to see if he will actually kill the elephant. However, from the narrator s perspective, he states, I had no intention of shooting the elephant I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary . In his mind, he wishes that the elephant will not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the narrator cannot turn back. Behind him, there was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute. It blocked the road for a long distance on either side . The villagers expect him to be brave enough to shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the villagers will laugh and mock him for being afraid to kill the elephant. The narrator knows that every white man s life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at . If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack of power over the Burmese. Therefore, he has no choice. Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. The narrator s decision to murder the elephant proves his weakness not his strength; instead, with all the excited Burmese around him, he was only an absurd puppet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Legislative Branch is, for the most part, in favor of legalizing abortion because the Senate and the House of Representatives all want women and fetuses to be protected. The Executive Branch favors abortion because they feel no child should be terminated in the late stage of a pregnancy. I will now explain how each branch played a role in making abortion legal under the constitution. First, the judicial branch has seen that laws blocking abortions are unconstitutional. The case Roe v Wade was the landmark case that contributed to women being able to have abortions. The United States Supreme Court came down with the decision of allowing a woman to terminate her pregnancy. The decision was based upon the Fourteenth Amendment which refers to privacy rights. Also, a judge, Myron H. Thompson, has declared the Women s Health and Safety Act unconstitutional. The Women s Health and Safety Act was related to the doctors performing abortions. In the case Planned Parenthood Southeast v. Strange the right to an abortion is constitutional like any other due process. However, the legislative branch finds having an abortion unconstitutional in certain circumstances. As early as 1981, the abortion debate shifted from the courts to Congress. Introduction Looking at the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria, it is seen that the species experiences sexual dimorphism in the form of both size and colour. This gives changes between the males and females that are specially adapted to give them the best chance of producing offspring. Males are considerably larger than the females and have clearly defining yellow hair along the abdomen, whereas females are smaller and are more of an olive green colour. Copulation for this species occurs on large mammal faeces as it acts as a source of nutrition for larvae once eggs are hatched. Many federal workers were furloughed which basically means that they were let off temporarily till the government started back up. Compatibility Of Confucianism With The Rule Of Law Question 8: Compatibility of Confucianism with the rule of law Introduction Since the early days of man, different societies have had different mechanisms of dealing with individual that go against accepted norms. These norms formed part of the basic education mechanism that a society practised to in the past. Foreign practises were however introduced during the colonial error when the colonial master imposed their own conflict resolution system on the different society. After the assimilation of the foreign system, researchers have now turned their attention to testing whether those systems are compatible with the traditionally practised mechanism within a society. A significant example of such a dilemma is on assessing whether Confucianism is compatible with the rule of law. August 25, 1572, marked the infamous day of the St. Bartholomew s Day Massacre. The slaughter of Gaspard de Coligny and several dozen Huguenot leaders, followed by the murder of thousands of people in the streets of Paris that day set off tremendous shock waves throughout Europe. As Barbara Diefendorf points out, the massacre provides a graphic illustration of the savagery of the religious strife in France at that time. The question of responsibility of the Massacre has been much debated amongst contemporaries and historians, each producing a different account of who was responsible. Whether it was Charles IX, Catherine de Medici, the Guise family, and other primary political figures who instigated the attacks, one will never know for certain. Hilton portrays young Chips as lacking in confidence. When Chips is forty eight, an age at which permanence of habits begins to be predictable, Hilton introduces Katherine Bridges, a young and unemployed governess, to create tension. While on summer vacation at Wasdale Head, Chips first sees Katherine waving excitedly from a rocky ledge. He believes that she is stranded and in need of help. In his attempt to rescue her, Chips finds himself rescued instead of the rescuer, and neither role is one for which he had much relish (20). Katherine, who typifies the New Woman of the nineties that Chips abhors, feels responsible for Chips s injury and visits him daily. At first Chips doesn t know what to do with Katherine: he isn t articulate and doesn t think it worthwhile to contradict her ideas and opinions, so he just listens to her chatter. Soon Chips looks forward to the glimpse of her safety bicycle careering along the lakeside road (23). Katherine likes Chips initially because he was so hard to get to know . . . and because his opinions dated from those impossible seventies and eighties . . . yet were . . . so thoroughly honest . . . (24). Chips and Katherine fall in love within a week. Prior to their marriage, Katherine tells Chips that she believes that schoolmastering is an important calling and that ...
