Van Gogh Essay examples
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert, a village in the south of the
Netherlands. His father was the protestant minister of the place, but three of his father s brothers were
art dealers, and so it is only natural that Vincent became an apprentice at the shop of his uncle Vincent
van Gogh in The Hague. His uncle had become a partner in the firm of Goupil amp; Cie, and after
having worked in The Hague for four years Vincent was sent to other branches of the Goupil firm,
first in London, then in Paris.
During the years in London and Paris, Vincent had developed an intense love for the Church and a
desire to follow in the footsteps of his father. In England ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His first drawings from Etten are still very clumsy, but in a few months a great improvement is
noticeable, and the progress becomes amazing as soon as he had settled in The Hague (after a row
with his father about his refusal to go to church at Christmas). Here he had some help from a very
good painter, called Anton Mauve, who also gave him some painting lessons. In the two years that Van
Gogh spent in The Hague (1882 83), he produced some two hundred drawings, most of which are very
characteristic figure studies, either after the woman who shared his life in The Hague, Sien Hoornik,
or after men and women from an old people s home, but there are also excellent landscapes, such as
the views of the gardens and meadows behind his house. One of the most famous of his figure studies
is the seated nude, titled Sorrow, for which Sien had sat as a model. This portrait, of which he also
made a lithograph, is typical for what his ideal in drawing was; he wanted to achieve more than mere
technical perfection: his real aim was expression. He wanted to express the misery of the poor people
with whom he was surrounded, and also their dignity. He admired the wood engravings of The
Graphic, buying and collecting as many as he could, especially its quot;Heads of the People, quot;

Individualisation Of Responsibility For Health Essay
Introduction
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in complementary medicine, and indeed
alternative medicine (Lee Treweek 2002, Andrews 2004, Barry 2006). Moreover the number of
professionally trained therapist and practitioners has increased giving the patient/client a better choice
and at more competitive rates (Smallwood, 2005).
In this essay a critical assessment of the view that patients use of complementary and alternative
medicine, can be understood as part of the individualisation of responsibility for health will be made
and argued, that there are many aspects which influence the uptake of such therapies. Responsibility
for health has changed and this will be discussed by examples of sociological ... Show more content

They along with many other authors (Sointu 2006) suggests that negative experiences within
conventional medical practises can cause disenchantment and initiate people to seek out other methods
of elevating their health care problems. They also cite from sociological studies that impersonal
practises and the inability to cure chronic illness is part of the explanation for the move to use CAM
and alternative therapies (Telford, Kralik, Koch,2006). The results of the study indicate that another
reason for uptake is the fact that many believed in the trends of alternative methods and choose to use
a consumerist attitude (Sharma, 1992:80) to obtaining health care. Consumer demand has brought
about the changes associated with CAM and alternative therapies use. The increase in several
countries at grass root level as suggested by Barry (2005) has influenced the integration of several
therapies into biomedical healthcare systems. Consumerism was one of the main ideas to influence
factor incorporated in the changes to the NHS in the 1970 s. Consumerism led systems meant a more
flexible and responsive health service which encouraged inclusion and self help. This shift in thinking
was brought about partly by consumer demand growing ever higher and medical sociologists debating
changes to how society views illness and health

The Raft Of The Medusa
The Raft of the Medusa is the most quintessential piece of art pertaining to the romantic period as it
fully exhibits the defining features of the romantic period. The Raft of the Medusa is a work of art
often referred to the starting point of the Romantic era, as it uses the most defining features of
Romantic period artwork. The Romantic era utilized emotion and nature in a lot of their paintings as it
single defining feature, and in this painting this is very much so. Theodore Gericault s The Raft of the
Medusa exhibits illicit emotion as the survivors on this raft are exhibiting raw emotion as they lay
waste to nature s wrath of the crashing waves. The survivors scream with hope as they attempt to

Heian Japan Influence
Heian Japan, which is commonly known as the golden age had many influences on Japan, but the
Kamakura Shogunate may have had more effects on Japan. During the golden age Prince Shotoku
brought Buddhism to Japan, but before that there were many confucian scholars. These two religions
went hand in hand in both the teachings and writings. Many of the Japanese ideas were collected from
Korea. Like China, Japan made an examination system, although it was actually more of a formality.
As the book The Asian World 600 1500 says, The nobles refused to accept the idea that they would
have to compete with commoners for government jobs and the highest positions continued to be
reserved for aristocrats (Des Forges and Major, 70), meaning that they let ... Show more content on

The kamakura are the group that ends up defeating the fujiwara in the rebellion. The first tribe that
does this makes two major mistakes. Firstly instead of reconstructing the government, she settles in
just as the fujiwara had done previously. The second mistake was that they did not kill all of the sons
of the other major clan. the sons of the other clan acts up as soon as they are old enough, and seize
control of Japan. the concept of the Samurai Warriors started with Minamoto and Yoshisune.
Minamoto chased after his brother trying to kill him, but Yoshisune valued his brother s honor more so
than he did his own life. so instead of being caught and killed by his own kin he decided to comment
noble suicide by disembowelment. After this brave feat, any warrior who dishonored himself or his
leader would be expected to commit the honorable suicide. a new political system was made called the

Teaching New Meanings For The Sorority Environment
You quickly become what you surround yourself with. This concept was a constant reminder my
mother gave me when I moved off to college. As a senior, I find this advice to hold very true when I
reflect on the organizations that I have been a part of. My sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, has had the biggest
influence on not only my character, but my language as well. What first seemed like jargon has now
become primary language. From learning new meanings for everyday vocabulary to different
intonational patterns, my language has adapted to the environment that I have surrounded myself with
for the past three years. Within a sorority, there are various terms that are held secret due to our ritual
ceremonies; however, there are also numerous terms that we will use in everyday language. These
terms are average words that are used throughout the day by a vast majority of the world population.
However, when the words are used in the sorority environment, they take on a completely new
meaning. In other words, they are semantically altered. A primary example is the transition of the
words big and little from adjectives to proper nouns. Instead of defining an object s size, these terms
are now used to name your big and little sister in the sorority. I remember getting asked my freshman
year, Are you going to rush? I immediately thought, Rush where? As I transitioned into the Greek
community, I quickly realized that the term rush changes meaning and now means going through

The movie Blow is the story of George Jung, the man who established the American cocaine market in
the 1970s. The film starts with George as a child, showing what his childhood was like and what his
relationship with his parents was like. As it progresses George grows up and moves to California.
While there he become caught up in the marijuana scene and eventually starts selling it for money.

Drug tolerance is when increasing amounts of the drug are needed to gain the original, desired effect.
This means that as a user continues to take a drug the desired effects lessen with the same dosage used
over and over again because they are slowly building up a tolerance to the drug and its effects. But, if
the user increases the dosage over time, they will be able to achieve that desired effect that they are
looking for and in turn become more and more tolerant to the drug. George exemplifies this trait very
well when he is in the delivery room and his wife is having their child. Before rushing his wife to the
hospital George is shown taking/accidently inhaling cocaine as he packs for the trip. Once at the
hospital and in the delivery room George is seen standing in a corner watching his wife give birth.
George is standing fairly rigid while his hand is shaking uncontrollably and he has a grin of sorts on
his face. This is him reacting to the drug and at the moment a drug induced heart attack as well. When
George recovers the doctor tells him what had happened. George recollects by saying, The official
toxicity limit for humans is between one and one and half grams of cocaine depending on body
weight. I was averaging five grams a day, maybe more. I snorted ten grams in ten minutes once. I
guess I had a high tolerance. This line in the movie shows how much of a tolerance

The Husband Loathes His Wife s Birthmark
I found the husband interesting because of the way he completely loathes his wife s birthmark. His
hatred seems to be a symbol of people who are not content in their wonderful situation. The husband
says that the wife s face would be flawless and beautiful if it were without the crimson birthmark. He
loathes this birthmark so much that he says it reminds him of sin and earthliness, opposed to
perfection and heavenliness. I find interest in the husband s character because of his hate towards a
little thing that can be covered with two fingers. This obsession makes me think that the husband
character is a representation of people who complain about a small imperfection, inconvenience, or
issue in their life. Near the beginning of the story,

Religion In Life Of Pi
In the novel Life of Pi, Pi Patel is a young boy who lives to tell a story to make you believe in god
(Martel 19). Pi believes in three faiths throughout his life and the novel, Hinduism, Christianity, and
Islam. He finds a common spirit behind each of these religions and they come together to guide Pi
through his journey and his life. Pi is faced with the challenge of staying alive on a lifeboat with a
Bengal tiger for months on end. He uses his faith and religion to guide him and keep him alive as well
as carrying this belief to his adulthood.
Pi is born as a Hindu, and it is the first of the three religions he comes to know and practice
throughout his life. When Pi was a child, his mother and aunt took him to a Hindu temple for the first
time. Pi did not really remember it, as he was so young, but something of the sultriness and mystery of
the place must have stayed with [him] (Martel 99). Pi s first religious experience was all sensory, but
left and profound impact on him and gave him his passion for religion. It brought foundation to his life
and led him to other religious imagination in Islam and Christianity later in the novel. Pi becomes very
passionate about Hinduism and the Hindu gods. He relates these gods to himself saying that Brahman
is no different from atman, the spiritual force within us, what you might call the soul (Martel 101).
This representation of one of the Hindu gods and what he symbolizes is carried out in Pi s actions on
the life boat. He had

There are many moon conspiracy theories that have been told to people all over the world. Many
people have tried to prove them right and prove them wrong. in, https://pseudoastro.wordpress.com,

The conspiracy theory that a man did not land on the moon is well known because of no stars in the

reason they are not visible in photos has a lot more to do with photography than with astronomy. Stars

The first fact to go against the moon landing theory is when Stuart Robbins states, If you have
managed to get this far and still believe this claim, then let s actually get to what s really going on.
Have you ever scanned or photocopied something? If so, you know that any little piece of dirt, hair,
dust, or whatever that gets between your original and your imaging device will show up in the copy.
That is what happened in the case of the infamous C rock a hair (such as an eyelash) or a small piece
of lint got caught between the image and the imager when they were making copies of it. Plain and
simple. In the original photograph (close up shown below), there is no C. This confirms that it was just
some hair or fine particle that came between the camera and the rock. The second piece of evidence
that rebuttals against the moon landing conspiracy theory is when Scott Davis states, But in fact, the
label simply isn t there. The image of the rock is taken from a much larger shot of the Moon s surface,
and if you look at the original image (shown below left), the marking isn t there. Either a small hair or
piece of thread must have got caught in the machine while it was being copied (image below right).

Itp Research Paper
What is ITP? ITP stands for Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura which is a scientific way of saying
the body has an abnormally low number of platelets. These platelets are cells in the blood that help
blood clot. When these cells are present in low numbers excessive bleeding and bruising often occur.
A common symptom is red blotches on the skin that do not blanch. These spots are caused by bleeding
underneath the skin. ITP affects both adults and children. In children, it is normally a temporary
condition. In adults, the condition is often chronic. A diagnosis of ITP is a process of exclusion as
similar symptoms appear in a range of other conditions including HIV and lupus. Once these
conditions are ruled out, treatment begins. The first step to any sort of treatment is to speak with a
physician. Only a doctor is able to diagnose ITP and specialists often work for years or decades to
treat conditions such as ITP. As the condition is often chronic in adults and potentially life threatening,
the most important step to recovery is to see a physician. What is Traditional Chinese Medicine? ...

Socioeconomic Inequality Of High School Dropout Rates
There are clear racial and economic disparities that exist in regards to high school dropout rates.
Researchers found that African American and Hispanic students experience higher rates of dropouts
compared to White students. In 2012, the dropout rate for African Americans was 7.5 percent. For the
Hispanic population it was 12.7 percent, and for Native Americans it was 14.6 percent. All of these
rates of minority dropout which are all significantly higher than the rates of Whites and Asians/Pacific

High school dropout is not an issue that solely affects North Carolina. In fact, the term dropout factory
is one that can be found in research articles and news reports across the country. This term has been
ascribed to as many as 1,700 high schools nationally (Tyler Lofstrom, 2009). With this volume of
schools being labeled as schools that allow, and possibly even stimulate, large number of students not
to continue onto graduation with their peers, the question is posed; why are students dropping out?
This question does not have one answer, but rather several factors both within and without of the
school s control.
In North Carolina a student can legally stop going to school at the age of 16. However, this is not a
decision that students hastily make, rather it is a gradual process of disengagement (Bridgeland,
DiLulio Jr. Morison, 2006). There are many reasons as to why these students choose to dropout,
including extenuating circumstances they may not be able to control. North Carolina requires a
majority of their districts to have school social workers or counselors document the reasons students
provide for dropping out of school. These reasons vary from school attendance having the highest
percentage of 40.3, community college enrollment, conflicts with work, unstable home environment,
change of location, need to care for children, and incarceration (Public Schools of North Carolina,
2015).
The literature refers to three factors that cause students not

Being silenced is the basic of the story that keeps it moving along with the social and gender issues
that impact violence of patriarchal domination and women being submissive. This essay will present a
powerful archetypical narrative topic in Ovid s Metamorphoses such as rape, silencing and the

Death March Research Paper
The death marches were hideous forced marches made to move Holocaust prisoners from one camp to
another. Many of them met their end here, and in fact, thousands of prisoners died of exposure,
starvation, and exhaustion (ushmm.org 2017). On January 18, 1945, the first death march of the
Holocaust occurred. Thousands are killed in the days before the death march (ushmm.org 2017). The
prisoners forced on these dreadful walks were taken from Auschwitz, and almost 60,000 of them were
commanded to leave their barracks. They began marching to Gliwice, another concentration camp.
Over 15,000 innocent lives were wasted that day. The few lucky ones who were left alive were
liberated on January 27. There were three main purposes of death marches. The first was to eliminate
evidence by killing thousands of the prisoners, who could later account for the awful things done to

many to die from just trying to take away the pain of hunger. They endured many other brutal

because frostbite had gotten that bad. Some tried to simply stop for only a couple seconds to pick up

the second they stopped. The SS guards had strict orders to kill prisoners who could no longer walk or

Ureteroscopy
Cystoscopy and ureteroscopy are diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, usually performed by
urologists, or doctors who specialize in diseases of the urinary tract. These procedures use endoscopes
to look into the organs of interest, and they are aimed at direct visualization of the interior of the
ureters and the bladder in order to diagnose (and sometimes treat) urinary complaints.
Cystoscopy
Cystoscopy is a procedure that uses a long thin optical instrument (also known as cystoscope), with an
eyepiece and a small lighted lens at either end, connected by a tube. The tube may be either rigid or
flexible, depending on whether it will be used for diagnosis or for treatment. The cystoscope transmits
clear and detailed images of the inner mucous membrane that lines the urinary bladder and the urethra.

The cash flow statement has three components of cash flow which includes how cash enters and
leaves a company such as operating, investing and financing as mentioned above.
The Statement of Cash flows includes measuring the cash inflows and outflows caused by operations.
Cash inflows include cash received from: * Owners when sales are sold to them * Creditors when cash
is borrowed through notes, loans, mortgages, and bonds
Whereas cash outflows includes cash paid to: * Owners in the form of dividends or distributions
STATEMENT OF CASH FLOWS 3 * Owners for the reacquisition of shares previously sold *
Creditors as repayment of the principal amounts of debt (excluding trade payables that relate to
operating activities)
The operations component of cash flow reflects how much cash is generated from a company s
products or services. Generally, changes made in cash, accounts receivable, depreciation, inventory
and accounts payable are reflected in cash from operations.
The cash flow is calculated by making certain adjustments to net income by adding or subtracting
differences in revenue, expenses and credit transactions (appearing on the balance sheet and income
statement) resulting from transactions that occur from one period to the next. These adjustments are

The Educational Work Of Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was born on the 31st August 1870 in the town of Chiaravalle, Italy. Maria got her
quest for knowledge from her parents who were both well educated. She started her education at a
local state school and proceeded onto a technical institute where she intended to pursue a career in
engineering. This was unusual at the time as there were barriers that constrained women s careers,
leaving them with fewer options to pursue technical careers than their male contemporaries.
Even after graduating from technical Maria yearned for me, this yearning led her to enroll in medical
school against her father s wishes and faced with the challenges and prejudice she would face in this
field. She triumphed through it all and in 1896 became the first woman to qualify as a doctor in Italy.
A little into her career, Maria began working with mentally retarded children it was here that her
observations would become fundamental to her future educational work.
Montessori began to develop her philosophy and methods in 1897. She caught everyone s attention
when most of her uneducable students passed the state test in reading and math, some scoring above
average. Curious how such principles would work with the mainstream population of children,
Montessori then opened her first school; Casa dei Bambini (Children s House) in 1907.
Montessori education spread to the United States in 1911 and became popular and widely accepted.
The educational philosophy however began to conflict with

The Autobiography of Malcom X as Told to Alex Haley Essay
Statement of Purpose
Alex Haley is the author of the book. The central theme of the book is to reflect the perspective of a
black man in an era that called for equality struggles between races in the United States while battling
views on racism and his rise and fall within the Nation of Islam religion.
The author s purpose for writing the book was for the reader to gain knowledge of Malcolm X as an
individual and not as a phenomenon. He wanted to deliver truths that spanned his brief lifetime.
Alex Haley s qualifications to write the book were simply that he was a black man in America during
the same time span as Malcolm X and his earlier work had focused on the struggles of African
Americans in the United States in particular. Haley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He becomes immersed in the night life and consumed with everything it has to offer. Just shy of being

uncovered regarding the Honorable Elijah Mohammad s human frailties and lack of moral character.
This revelation prompted a holy journey that yet again changed Malcolm s thought process that was
evident at the end of his life.
Critique
This autobiography of Malcolm X was spellbinding. The fascinating persona of this man was
phenomenal. As he describes his education in one part of the book, Gentlemen, I finished the eighth
grade in Mason, Michigan. My high school was the black ghetto of Roxbury,
Massachusetts. My college was in the streets of Harlem, and my master s was taken in prison is just
amazing. This book did not contain any illustrations, pictures, or tables. The author was extremely
descriptive in telling the story. His writing style made the reader to become a part of the story telling
experience. I could visualize the experiences and places that were included in the book. For example,
when he told about the conking of his hair, how it felt when his scalp was burning, although it was a
painful experience, it was humorous to me as a reader. I could imagine the lindy hopping dances he
talked about. How he would whirl them around,

My Table Conflict
The struggle between staying within society s expectations and the desire to make a commitment to
one s art can be daunting. This dilemma has been questioned for ages. Sometimes society even
questions someone who doesn t quite fit into a norm they believe exists. These conflict or struggle is
addressed in Jane Campion s film, An Angel at My Table. The film is based on a trilogy of
autobiographies by Australian author, Janet Frame. Adapted originally for a three part mini series, the
film chronicles Janet s life from childhood to young adulthood. Throughout the film its director

mentions Campion s way of making Frame look startled in the film. Campion and her

of mental illness out her window. Framed by the window Janet is still contained (Gillet). She is
looking outside for what awaits. Her containment within that window can also be viewed as her
containment in her mind as far as the community sees it. A positive outlook is asserted in the scenes
where Janet is in Spain. In this shots she is sitting in the window while it is wrapped around her. She
smiles, alone in her freedom to be who she without restrictions from outer infringements. Finally, the
closing scene, the author is home and content to be within that window. Sue Gillet concurs; She

Ramawat Nikhil Dev Tiwari (Acting Head) ABSTRACT Cold storages form the most important
element for proper storage and distribution of wide variety of perishables, especially fruits and
vegetables. According to a rough estimate 25% of fruits and vegetables worth crores of rupees are
spoiled every year for want of adequate post harvest technologies including cold storages. It is
therefore necessary that cold storages are to be constructed in major producing as well as consuming
centers. Since there is no cultivation of generally cold stored items like apple, oranges, chilly etc. in
some states. The demand of off seasonal vegetables and fruits are very much, so the consumption of
these type of vegetables and fruits are very high. The most obvious losses after harvest are caused by
mechanical injury, decay and aging. Losses in moisture, vitamins, sugars and starches are less
obvious, but they adversely affect quality and nutrition. Rough handling and holding at

Car Industry Australia Essay
Executive Summary Eagle Motors Ltd is a well established Swedish Car Manufacturing Company
trying to set up their firm in Australia. In order to compete successfully in the car industry in Australia,
Eagle Motors Ltd needs to conduct an analysis of the industry context in which they would like to
operate. Using the porters five forces model, this provides a detailed analysis of the competitive nature
of the Australian car industry and also it suggests an appropriate competitive strategy for Eagle Motors
to gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Eagle Motors Ltd is planning to employ a mixture of
Swedish and Australian managers and employees to run there operations in Australia. However, the

High fixed costs: This result in an economy of scales effect that increases rivalry. High exit barriers:
High exiting barriers in the car industry place a high cost of abandoning products, hence firms
compete intensely not to loose out, like Mitsubishi. Industry shakeout: A growing market and high
profits induces new firms like Eagle Motors to enter market and increase production which again
increases competition and rivalry. Threat of Substitutes: In porter s theory, substitutes refer to products
in other industries, not different types of the product. A substitute exists when a products demand is
affected by a change in the price of the substitute product. For Eagle motors the price elasticity for
cars is affected by substitute products such as public transport, motorcycles and bicycles for example.
If more of these substitutes become available, the demand for cars becomes more elastic since
customers have more alternatives. A close substitute makes it difficult for a company like Eagle
motors to raise prices. In Australia now the use of public transport and other forms of transport like
bicycles have increased largely because of the rise in petrol prices. In an already competitive market
for cars, Eagle Motors needs to be aware of the increasing petrol prices, and the tendency for
consumers to switch to lower cost substitutes like public

The Permissive Parenting Style
In the article Don t trust anyone over 30 study explained correlation between parental legitimacy, the
three parenting styles and the predicted outcome of delinquent behavior. The three main parenting
styles covered were; authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. It states that the parenting styles that
is practice at home could be one of the potential factor that contributes to the future criminal behavior
and parental legitimacy tends to intercede between the two. The group that were being studied
consisted of middle and high school students from the New Hampshire Youth Study . The research
included three phases (T1, T2 T3 questionnaires) in a longitudinal study that lasted about 18 months.
The results were that authoritative parenting style had a more positive association with parental
legitimacy versus authoritarian parenting style. There was no association between permissive
parenting style and parental legitimacy, but it was associated with delinquent behavior. Lastly, parental

Case Analysis of Virgin Mobile
Virgin Mobile Pricing Strategy
Situational Analysis
Virgin Mobile, a MVNO is planning to launch its services in USA. It s target is underserved
Demographics of 15 29 years as this age group is underserved by the regular telecom operators due to
their low credit score ( Under 18 demographic cannot go for contract). They are planning to launch
their product with service offerings that focuses on value added services.
Problem Statement * The industry structure is such that supports post paid user base and is completely
different from UK industry structure. * Virgin will have to attract the new user base with lower
budgets and this segment does not have a credit score * The industry has matured and the big players

So servicing can lead to losses if pricing not done correctly
Cost structure
Cost of Acquisition of a customer for Virgin
Commission = $30
If virgin sells its phone at $30
Cost of ad = $60million/1 million target user = $60 per user
Unit Cost per user = $120
Customer LTV in case of prepaid
The industry average revenue per customer is given as $22 (52 30 = 22)
The churn rate is 2% per month. So for a year retention rate,r, will be = 1 (.02*12) = .76 or 76%
Interest Rates = 5%
Yearly margin =22*12 = $264
LTV for a normal operator = {264/ (1 .76+.05)} 370 = $540
LTV for Virgin = {264/(1 .76+.05)} 120 = $790
Hidden costs = 35 29/29 = .21 or 21%
If Virgin removes the hidden cost then Margins will reduce to (264/1.21) = 218.18
LTV after removal of hidden cost = 218.18/(1 .76+.05)} 120 = 632.34
LTV after removal of contracts for Industry = {264/ (1 .28+.05)} 370 = $430
Since Virgin Mobile is trying to create a bucket (option 2) by considering ARPU at 200 minutes, it
should try to keep its price per minute at around 25 cents per minute (Exhibit 10b) for third option
Monthly minutes = 200 min
Monthly cost to serve = .45*200x= 90x
Monthly margin = 200x 90x = 110x
Keeping x as .25
LTV = (.25*110*12)/{1 .72+.05} 120= $309
Recommendations
* Since LTV in option 3 is lower than industry average LTV, therefore option 3 should not be
considered * Option 1 does not

My Future Essay
My future is something I often think about. Most often, the questions that arise include the common
doubts of Am I doing this right? , or even the occasional midnight philosophical questions such as
Why are we here? , and so on. For the purpose of this essay, I will focus on the factors that have
allowed me to reach this point in my life and how these factors influenced and continue to influence
me, in order to provide me with a visualization of my future.
Factors that contributed to my current life choices include the desperate want to be something greater,
as well as to experience the world in ways some could only dream of. I study hard, allowing for me to
have the possibility of an early graduation. I dream big, allowing me with the imagination to draw up
plans for myself and my future. I work hard, allowing me the strength and vision to execute my plans
for the future. The way that I was raised has greatly benefited me. My parents have taught me that
anything and everything is possible as long as you work hard for it despite the what others may tell
you or even if the odds are against you. Another factor that led to my current life, is the amount of
time I allow myself to think about my plans and refine them. This is extremely important because,
without a solid, flexible, long term plan, you could get lost in dreaming about the future, and end up
not accomplishing anything. Hence, many aspects of my life have been planned out with not one or
two possible alternatives

Angela s Ashes, By Frank Mccourt
Suffering, treatment, rehabilitation, and mental and physical illness are just some of the issues
common alcoholics deal with. Aside from those complications, alcoholism has been a devastating
problem, especially in Ireland, for hundreds of years. But who is really feeling the detrimental effects
that most people assume the alcoholics themselves have to deal with? Ireland is culturally known to be
a race of drunks and the long lasting effects due to alcoholic dependence truly defeats not just the
alcoholics, but their families lives as well. The Irish have been said to be the most successful and
accomplished immigrant group in the United States. (BCS) Their hard work and determination
however, is lost within their alcohol dependence. Providing for a family can be extremely challenging
when there is a lack of money within the family. In the memoir Angela s Ashes, written by Frank
McCourt, Frank lives a scare life due to his Ireland born father Malachy s, drinking problem. His
problem caused an extreme level of deprivation within his family of money, food, sufficient clothing,
etc. (FM) This scenario wasn t just prevalent in the McCourt family, but in many families throughout
the entire country of Ireland, as shown in the memoir. Families suffered living in the same poor
conditions as the Mccourt s due to drinking problems and alcohol dependency. It is also hard for this
cycle to be broken, due to the fact that 30% of women who didn t complete high school and 20% of

Book Report Angelas Ashes Essay
Angela s Ashes by Frank McCourt
A Look at Irish Culture during the Depression Era
Frank Mc Court, the author of Angela s Ashes, was born during the Great Depression. A few years
after immigrating to the United States because their families believed they would find their fortune
here, his Irish family moved back to Ireland in hopes of a better life. They were met with only more
hardships in their native country. His book shows the struggle and small joys of daily life with
siblings, school friends, and the adults in his life. It also provides much insight into the way the people
in Ireland lived at that time. The author tells the story from the viewpoint of Frank, the oldest child of
a father whose background in quot;the North quot; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also quot;the drink quot; the disease of Irish fathers who spend their weeks wages in the pub
on Friday night. (p. 184)
Frank s mother was forced to seek Relief, the Irish version of America s welfare system. She also
sought help from the Catholic and Protestant Church in feeding her family. The iron in the book was
that help was not given out without an accompanying sermon, in hopes of persuasion to join one or the
other. Mc Court depicts those in charge of the Relief system as being biased and unchristian type of
people who looked down on those they were in a position to help. (p. 150)
There are many amusing stories in the book revolving around the way the young children had to fend
for themselves while their parents sought work. In an effort to keep their apartment heated throughout
an especially cold winter, the children tore apart the furniture, and when that was gone they began to
use the wood from the walls. When the landlord came to see the apartment, he commented that he
thought he had rented them a 4 room apartment when it was only a 3 room, not realizing they had torn
out an entire wall. (p. 79)
Even those relatives who had some money were not always eager to help the family. They were
critical of the drunken father and for the mother who continued having children they could not
support. Ironically, however, when there was a death in the family, everyone showed up

Dna Database Ethics
How would you feel about a DNA database having record of every man, woman and child in the
United States? Many questions are raised on whether it is ethical to have, safe and beneficial. A
national DNA database could help solve crimes, but it also allows for thousands of innocent people to
be at risk. Many argue against having a DNA database and many are for a database. I am going to
argue against having a national DNA database because it has potential of being hacked, it is a violation
of individual rights and DNA is not 100% accurate. A national DNA database would be under control
by the government, but is the government able to create such a secure system to protect valuable
information? Government computers were hacked in 2015, exposing ... Show more content on

Though there are many arguments against having a DNA database there are also reasons to have a
DNA database. DNA is one of the leading factors in putting criminals behind bars. When DNA is
evident in a criminal case, it makes that case a lot stronger. With a database of all citizens DNA it can
help law enforcement catch criminals to make communities safer. DNA will not only be able to help
solve crimes ongoing now and for the future but to help solve past crimes. DNA also allows for
scientist to use the valuable information for research to get a better understanding of health and safety
for individuals and to help link people who have the same medical condition. With an entire database
of all people, it allows for the system to not be discriminatory. Minorities make up the vast majority of
the criminal justice system. With every race, gender and ethnicity in the system it opens up the ability
for all people to be at risk for being in the system with DNA placing them for a crime and making it
harder to get away with one. There is also a possibility that having a DNA database will lower crime
rates. People who feel they can get away with crimes now, will have a higher chance of getting caught.
Those who fear getting caught because the government and police agencies have their DNA will be
less likely to commit crimes. Mark Kleiman a professor who deals with criminal justice stated, DNA
databases reduce crime rates,

Army Hand Salute Research Paper
History
Have you ever wondered why we salute or where this gesture of respect came from?
To preserve history, senior leaders must uphold, teach, and pass down heritage and time honored
traditions because heritage and tradition is what has shaped us into the military force we are today.
This paper will cover the history of military salutes, its evolution, and the effects that it has on the
military today.
The military salute is a tradition that permeates within the military and dates many centuries. There
are two distinct salutes used by the military today. The hand salute and the gun salute.
The hand salute is a form of recognition and greeting between members in the armed services. There
seems to be no true origin of the hand salute and it leads to a lot of speculation of how this gesture of
trust and respect came about. Forms of the hand salute traces back to the Roman and Medieval Times.
During the Roman times when assassinations were widespread and common, in order to see a public
official, a citizen would have to raise their right hand to show that it was free of a weapon. In
Medieval times, a knight in armor would raise their visors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Navy adopted the hand salute from the British Navy. The British Navy s earlier salutes involved
removing the headgear. When they started adding chinstraps to their headgear, it proved too difficult
to remove the headgear in each instance so they began just touching the hat with their right hand. This
gesture, officially modified in 1820, evolved into the hand salute we use today. Some may think that
hand salute is a sign of inferiority because juniors have to always salute seniors first but it is not.
Juniors salute first as a military courtesy towards seniors and it is always required to be returned. A
few other instances where the hand salute is rendered is during the National Anthem or foreign
national anthem, To the Color , Hail to the Chief , rendering reports, and raising and lowering of the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Drug Delivery System
Ophthalmic drug delivery is the most complicated drug delivery due to its unique anatomical and
physiological barriers. Viruses, bacteria and fungi are the three most common pathogens causing
various ocular disorders. The infections can be either local, where only the ocular tissues are infected
or systemic where the infection spreads to various other organs. Immunocompromised patients are
more prone to these infections. While some infections are self limiting and benign, others are
associated with serious consequences, such as vision loss. In spite of various anti infective agents
being readily available, delivery of these compounds to the target tissue is still a challenging task.

Rapid absorption and fast onset of action, it avoids hepatic first pass metabolism.
Disadvantages of Ocular Drug Delivery System
Limited permeability across the cornea, drainage of the administered dose into the lachrymal duct,
leads to systemic side effects and short term therapeutic effect due to eye blinking results in frequent
dosage regimen.
Barriers in Ocular Drug Delivery System
1. Drug loss from the ocular surface
After instillation, the flow of lacrimal fluid removes instilled compounds from the surface of the eye.
Even though the lacrimal turnover rate is only about 1 μl/min the excess volume of the instilled fluid
is flown to the nasolacrimal duct rapidly in a couple of minutes. Another source of non productive
drug removal is its systemic absorption instead of ocular absorption. Systemic absorption may take
place either directly from the conjunctival sac via local blood capillaries or after the solution flow to
the nasal cavity. Anyway, most of small molecular weight drug dose is absorbed into systemic
circulation rapidly in few minutes. This contrasts the low ocular bioavailability of less than

The Victimization of Teenage Girls
What does it mean to be a girl according to society? How does society see it? In many countries, a girl
is seen as powerless, uneducated, and too emotional to handle a man s job. For example, women in
Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive. In the past, writers used to describe a woman s role as the
victim of many forms of discrimination in the United States of America. In other words, women were
only involved in things that men thought were not important. For instance, women did not have any
other role than being a housewife. They had to stay at home, watch the children, be responsible, and
do all the chores. Nonetheless, American women got their freedom earlier comparing to other
countries in the world. Now they are more independent, more ... Show more content on

Kerry Cohen, as a practicing psychotherapist and writing teacher, provides in her book different
resources and website where teen girls can get more information about these symptoms.
Another second reason why teen girls are victimized is the culture of this society. Teen girls are told to
be princesses when they are small. However when they are grown up they are told by their parents that
they are too young to use inappropriate cloth. When they go out and meet other teens who wear sexy
cloths, they are getting mixed feeling about it. Another example is when they watch TV they see girls
in sexy cloths and they automatically think that it is right. The TV uses girls in bikinis to attract the
audience. Even more, when teen girls go to school, they want to fit in their group of friends by
wearing the same cloths because that is what they make them seem cool. Therefore, how they are seen
by others is more important than anything. Image comes first. They must do anything to fit in the
Cinderella s shoe. Likewise, on the short story, Where Are You Going, Where have You Been written

Usually, when you think about the term drug, you may assume that it is an unpleasant substance that
poses an undesired experience. As the individual grows, he is warned by parents at home, relatives in
society, and teachers in school about the most dangerous and destructive consequences of drug use.
Nowadays, these messages have been conveyed through the media and film industry. But years back,
these entertainment platforms were showing drugs to be a pleasurable substance. Moreover, these
platforms sometimes stereotype the people who take drugs.
Susan Boyd, the author, is recognized for composing the article Pleasure and Pain that creates a

The next thing Boyd researches is the time of rock and roll. After watching one of the three films she
mentioned. He figured that the main lead in the film who uses drugs was portrayed in the positive.
They did not fully go against of what Boyd has believed. The main protagonist used to do drugs and
did found pleasure in doing it, but he did it because he did not want to collapse in the norm of society.
He also did to improve his life through drug dealing as he wanted a way where he could make money
easily and quickly.
During 1970 s there was a big change in the industry of entertainment. This was the time where the
African Americans were becoming a part of the working class. During this time, there were some

the civil rights movement. Boyd discusses a movie called Superfly (1972). This movie shows the real
condition of poor black people in New York City. How they were not getting work and because of
which they had to smuggle drugs for their living. However, this film disagrees with Mandelson s

Phaethon And Icarus Analysis
The two myths, Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus, describe the fatal mistake of 2 foolishly ambitious
young boys. Throughout the two texts the authors, Bernard Evslin and Geraldine McCaughrean, who
respectively rewrote Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus, use the literary elements of characterization
and imagery to convey their shared theme. Through the use of characterization and imagery, both
mythological protagonists, Phaethon and Icarus, demonstrate a common lesson that a prideful
disregard of the warnings from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous
consequences. First, in the story of Phaethon, Phaethon is characterized as a thoughtless and
headstrong boy. These characteristics lead to catastrophic results, and help relate back to the main
theme; A prideful disregard of the warnings from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to
disastrous consequences. For example, while driving the sun chariot and contemplating flying closer
to Earth so everyone will see him, Phaethon exclaims, Apollo said not to come too close to the Earth,
but how will he know? And I won t stay long, just dip down towards the villages. (53). This implies
the Phaethon does not think about his actions, nor their consequences, and only does what benefits
him and his reputation. Another adjective that could be used to describe Phaethon is stubborn, which
is also demonstrated in this quote. It illustrates the idea that Phaethon was being overconfident and

in globalization. Pietra Rivoli discusses about the t shirt that people wear everyday but not knowing
the transformational factors hidden when making that t shirt globally. The roles that government play
in the global work environment is that in today s world majority of businesses need to register with a
state government to function. Corporations need a charter, and other forms of businesses, such as
limited liability companies or partnerships, need other forms of registration. The purpose of this
registration is usually to define the financial accountability the owners of the company have. It limits

Fatah And Hamas Conflict
The violence pointed back to when Palestinians protested against the Israelis from occupying the West
Bank and Gaza by violence and civil unrest, which brought on a series of action called Intifada
(uprising) in the middle east. The Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands with the Palestinian at
the White House after signing the Oslo Agreement. This agreement failed to hold and strength and the
region became unsettled, which caused conflict with the Palestinian leaders. Hamas gains their
popular support through well funded social actions, which grew out of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Hamas sponsored the building of schools and hospitals, and ran other charitable and religious
organizations (Economist). Both Fatah and Hamas were opposed to the PLO leadership in Palestine.
That Fatah and Hamas were reconciliation agreement to signal the end of divisive fighting between
the two group for the control of Palestine. Those agreements failed to hold up between to two political
parties. Fatah was not happy with the Palestinian choosing Hamas to protect the citizens. The Fatah
Hamas conflict exploded in 2006, when Hamas won more seats than Fatah did in the legislative
election and earned the right to form a new government (Preface). Fatah was considered to be an

considered terrorists from destroying Israel. As stated by Stanley Cohen, Hamas is a nationalist

Financing Oral Health Care Services
Financing Oral Health Care as Medically Necessary Public Health Care Service
One core issue at the forefront of adding oral health care to the list of medically necessary services in
Canada is financing. Oral diseases are estimated to be the fourth most expensive diseases to treat in
most developed countries (Petersen et al., 2005; Petersen, 2003). The high cost associated with oral
health care, coupled with economic challenges has forced many governments around the world to
reduce their health care expenditure (Leake Birch, 2008). In Canada, some provincial governments
provide limited but essential levels of oral health care coverage for vulnerable and needy groups such
as children and older persons (Quiñonez, 2013). For instance, in the 1950s Newfoundland and
Laborador had a province wide dental care program (Leake, 2006). Other provinces such as Manitoba,
Bristish Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Alberta and the Norhtwest Territories
followed suit with dental health programs for children and seniors during the 1970s and 1980s (Leake,
2006). However, the need to balance public operating budgets and reduce massive public debts led to
the restructuring of the health care system, as well as, a financial squeeze in public health funding
(David Naylor, 1999). This ultimately led to reduced public funding for oral health services, resulting
in cancellation of provincial dental programs for children and seniors (Leake, 2006).
This paper proposes two funding options

* Walruses, polar bears, seals and other marine mammals that rely on ice floes for resting, feeding and
breeding will be particularly threatened.
* Populations of krill and other small organisms will decline as the ice recedes, with large
consequences for fish, whales and other marine mammals.
* Indigenous people who have lived in the frozen North for centuries will be most directly affected. *
5 * The thawing of the permafrost the frozen layer of soil and water just beneath the Earth s surface.
This will cause the terrain to subside and damage buildings, pipelines, roads and other infrastructure.
* The Polar Regions are key drivers of global weather patterns, and the changes caused by global
warming could cause these regions to magnify the greenhouse effect.
What can be done?
Unfortunately, Polar Regions are highly vulnerable to climate change, and their natural and human
systems have a low capacity for adapting. Indigenous communities with traditional life styles will
have only limited opportunities to respond to the expected changes. Technologically developed
communities, however, are likely to adapt their infrastructure and transport means to the new
conditions and take advantage of new trade and commercial opportunities.

visual processing in orthography and reading disabilities and to link findings on the cognitive
underpinnings of learning to results from the emerging body of brain research. They also insist that the
Test of Dyslexia (TOD) be refined to include a Word Memory subtest and modify or completely do

one assessment tool is reliable enough to measure reading complications. These studies have found
that multiple assessment tools must be used to evaluate students reading

The Cause And Effects Of The Chernobyl Disaster In 1986
Have you ever imagined the end of the Earth? Let s take the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 for example,
and look at how the explosion affected some parts of the world. Large areas were affected by the
Chernobyl explosion. Many things and properties were destroyed because of this. People, animals, and
plants were affected by the explosion and it made many suffer. It took many people to begin cleaning
up the mess, and they got sick. There is still a lot of damage there. It s very scary to know that an
accident like this could occur again. A large area was affected by the explosion of Chernobyl. The
bigger main areas that were really affected were Ukraine, parts of Russia, Europe, and Belarus.
Ukraine was where the Chernobyl power plant was located so that was the area that was really
affected. The gases spread to Russia, Europe and Belarus. It covered only most of Russia and Ukraine.
It wrecked over 63,000 square miles and was mostly located in rural areas. In Ukraine there were gas
exposures, devoured properties, and fire exposure. The fire exposure was what was still burning after
the explosion, and a lot was fires that affected people. There were a lot of lapland animals dead from
the outcome of the explosion, that were breathing in the gases and chemicals or that got injured from
the explosion who have died. The gas exposure is the toxic chemicals getting outside in the air and the
wind carries it around. Even if there is no wind, the chemicals are still flowing around in

Build A Raccoon Research Paper
Raccoons are inquisitive and intelligent creatures, sometimes they are too inquisitive and intelligent as
they are often regarded as menaces to society. As anyone who has ever had their trash strewn all over
their lawn can tell you, raccoons will stop at nothing to get their next meal. The problem with
raccoons is that they are great at learning how to solve problems and once they learn how to solve it, it
s unlikely that they will forget it. What does this mean for you? If a raccoon solves the puzzle of
opening your garbage can or how to go through your pet door, it can wreak havoc on your patience.
However, there are five guaranteed ways to get rid of those raccoons for good.
It s all About the Food
Raccoons are largely motivated by food, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You can either build a high privacy fence or install an electric fence. If you decide to go with a
traditional fence, make sure that it is buried at least a foot underground and raises several feet above
the ground. The fence cannot be chain link or mesh because they will climb right over it. Electric
fences are the better choice when it comes to raccoons especially for small areas around a pond or a
garden. These are harmless, effective and relatively cheap.
Trapping
Trapping a raccoon is another option that is available to you, however it requires a lot of patience and
it may not work. Set the traps in an area that the raccoons frequent, but make sure that you clean the
trap thoroughly and set it with latex gloves on; otherwise the raccoons will smell your scent and not
go near the trap. Bait the trap and disguise it under some branches and leaves. Relocate the raccoon
once you have trapped it in a wooded area that is at least 10 miles from you or your nearest neighbor.
As already stated, raccoons are incredibly smart and there is no guarantee that it will work.
Raccoons are adorable animals when they are in the woods, but when they invade our properties and
refuse to go, they turn from cute to infuriating. Try some or all of these tips to get the raccoons to go,
if all else fails call your local animal control office or a professional pest removal

Gas Chromatography Lab
Simple Distillation and Gas Chromatography The objective of the lab was to purify compounds that
can be turned into gas at a reasonable temperature without using decomposition. Gas chromatography
was also used to identify the proportions of the volatile compound in the different samples. The
mixture of hexane and octane was assigned to me and my partner. The apparatus for simple distillation
was assemble using a thermocouple, air condenser, distillation head, metal keck clamps, and a conical
reaction vial. The joints of the glassware were greased before assembly. Four boiling chips were
placed in the conical ration vial before it was assembled. After being assigned a mixture, 3.5 mL of the
mixture was put into a reaction vial. The apparatus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was no distillate in the distillation head after 20 minutes on the setting of 40 so the Variac
transformer was turned to 45. The first fraction was collected at 55.6°C. The ratio of hexane to octane
was 87.437% to 12.563%. The second fraction was collected between 47.3°C and 40.5°C. 88.429% to
11.571% was the ratio of hexane to octane for this fraction. The third fraction was collected at 30.6°C,
and the ratio of hexane to octane was 94.957% to 5.043%. The contents of the conical reaction vial
were placed in a fourth vial and a chromatogram was obtained for it. The ration of hexane to octane
was 7.501% to 92.499%. During the collection of the three fractions, a piece of the glass pipet broke
off into the distillation head. The results of the experiment could have been incorrect because the
glassware was not properly cleaned. The distillate also could have collected too fast which would have
lowered the separations efficiency. From this information, infer that hexane has a lower boiling point
than octane because most of the distillate was hexane. The majority of what was left in the conical
reaction vial was octane because the temperature was not hot enough to turn it into a gas to go into the
distillation

My Rifle Research Paper
I have got very many gifts and a bunch of unique, special gifts. This unreal item was a .308 caliber
rifle. It was such an outrage of excitement as my parents were giving it to me. Three aspects of the gun
stood out to me it had a great design to it, the size of the caliber, and the size of the gun itself. The
design was an option of my choice, I had always wanted a rifle like this one. My rifle, in my opinion,
has one of the most distinctive designs for a rifle. Starting at the stock of the gun, it was sleek, natural
camouflage , synthetic stock. As you go up the gun, you arrive at the metal parts, and this matte finish
of black really matched the stock, which gave it my attention as I focused on it at first glance. The
barrel, at the peak of the gun adjacent to the opening system, was thick, so if I was to shoot multiple
times in a row the barrel wouldn t warp after constant heating through the violent explosion of the
cartridge as the bullets races through the end of the barrel. On the other hand, the bullet measurements
were just as important. At the time I was given the gun, I wasn t very old or strong. If I was too have
received this rifle in any caliber bigger than .308 I wouldn t have been able to shoot it. On the other
side, the deer I was to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the chance to shoot it till recently. As for what came with moderately strong, I wasn t very tall,

The size of the gun was probably the most important thing to me because I hadn t ever had a gun

be the rifle it is if its vital aspects weren t all put

  • 2. Van Gogh Essay examples Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert, a village in the south of the Netherlands. His father was the protestant minister of the place, but three of his father s brothers were art dealers, and so it is only natural that Vincent became an apprentice at the shop of his uncle Vincent van Gogh in The Hague. His uncle had become a partner in the firm of Goupil amp; Cie, and after having worked in The Hague for four years Vincent was sent to other branches of the Goupil firm, first in London, then in Paris. Here he had some help from a very good painter, called Anton Mauve, who also gave him some painting lessons. In the two years that Van Gogh spent in The Hague (1882 83), he produced some two hundred drawings, most of which are very characteristic figure studies, either after the woman who shared his life in The Hague, Sien Hoornik, or after men and women from an old people s home, but there are also excellent landscapes, such as the views of the gardens and meadows behind his house. One of the most famous of his figure studies is the seated nude, titled Sorrow, for which Sien had sat as a model. This portrait, of which he also made a lithograph, is typical for what his ideal in drawing was; he wanted to achieve more than mere technical perfection: his real aim was expression. He wanted to express the misery of the poor people with whom he was surrounded, and also their dignity. They along with many other authors (Sointu 2006) suggests that negative experiences within conventional medical practises can cause disenchantment and initiate people to seek out other methods of elevating their health care problems. They also cite from sociological studies that impersonal practises and the inability to cure chronic illness is part of the explanation for the move to use CAM and alternative therapies (Telford, Kralik, Koch,2006). The results of the study indicate that another reason for uptake is the fact that many believed in the trends of alternative methods and choose to use a consumerist attitude (Sharma, 1992:80) to obtaining health care. Consumer demand has brought about the changes associated with CAM and alternative therapies use. The increase in several countries at grass root level as suggested by Barry (2005) has influenced the integration of several therapies into biomedical healthcare systems. • 6. Teaching New Meanings For The Sorority Environment You quickly become what you surround yourself with. This concept was a constant reminder my mother gave me when I moved off to college. As a senior, I find this advice to hold very true when I reflect on the organizations that I have been a part of. My sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, has had the biggest influence on not only my character, but my language as well. What first seemed like jargon has now become primary language. From learning new meanings for everyday vocabulary to different intonational patterns, my language has adapted to the environment that I have surrounded myself with for the past three years. Within a sorority, there are various terms that are held secret due to our ritual ceremonies; however, there are also numerous terms that we will use in everyday language. These terms are average words that are used throughout the day by a vast majority of the world population. However, when the words are used in the sorority environment, they take on a completely new meaning. In other words, they are semantically altered. A primary example is the transition of the words big and little from adjectives to proper nouns. Instead of defining an object s size, these terms are now used to name your big and little sister in the sorority. I remember getting asked my freshman year, Are you going to rush? I immediately thought, Rush where? As I transitioned into the Greek community, I quickly realized that the term rush changes meaning and now means going through sorority or ... In fact, the term dropout factory is one that can be found in research articles and news reports across the country. With this volume of schools being labeled as schools that allow, and possibly even stimulate, large number of students not to continue onto graduation with their peers, the question is posed; why are students dropping out? This question does not have one answer, but rather several factors both within and without of the school s control. In North Carolina a student can legally stop going to school at the age of 16. However, this is not a decision that students hastily make, rather it is a gradual process of disengagement (Bridgeland, DiLulio Jr. Morison, 2006). There are many reasons as to why these students choose to dropout, including extenuating circumstances they may not be able to control. North Carolina requires a majority of their districts to have school social workers or counselors document the reasons students provide for dropping out of school. These reasons vary from school attendance having the highest percentage of 40.3, community college enrollment, conflicts with work, unstable home environment, change of location, need to care for children, and incarceration (Public Schools of North Carolina, 2015). Most often, the questions that arise include the common doubts of Am I doing this right? , or even the occasional midnight philosophical questions such as Why are we here? , and so on. For the purpose of this essay, I will focus on the factors that have allowed me to reach this point in my life and how these factors influenced and continue to influence me, in order to provide me with a visualization of my future. Factors that contributed to my current life choices include the desperate want to be something greater, as well as to experience the world in ways some could only dream of. I study hard, allowing for me to have the possibility of an early graduation. I dream big, allowing me with the imagination to draw up plans for myself and my future. I work hard, allowing me the strength and vision to execute my plans for the future. The way that I was raised has greatly benefited me. My parents have taught me that anything and everything is possible as long as you work hard for it despite the what others may tell you or even if the odds are against you. Another factor that led to my current life, is the amount of time I allow myself to think about my plans and refine them. This is extremely important because, without a solid, flexible, long term plan, you could get lost in dreaming about the future, and end up not accomplishing anything. Hence, many aspects of my life have been planned out with not one or two possible alternatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Aside from those complications, alcoholism has been a devastating problem, especially in Ireland, for hundreds of years. But who is really feeling the detrimental effects that most people assume the alcoholics themselves have to deal with? Ireland is culturally known to be a race of drunks and the long lasting effects due to alcoholic dependence truly defeats not just the alcoholics, but their families lives as well. The Irish have been said to be the most successful and accomplished immigrant group in the United States. (BCS) Their hard work and determination however, is lost within their alcohol dependence. Book Report Angelas Ashes Essay Angela s Ashes by Frank McCourt A Look at Irish Culture during the Depression Era Frank Mc Court, the author of Angela s Ashes, was born during the Great Depression. A few years after immigrating to the United States because their families believed they would find their fortune here, his Irish family moved back to Ireland in hopes of a better life. They were met with only more hardships in their native country. His book shows the struggle and small joys of daily life with siblings, school friends, and the adults in his life. The iron in the book was that help was not given out without an accompanying sermon, in hopes of persuasion to join one or the other. Mc Court depicts those in charge of the Relief system as being biased and unchristian type of people who looked down on those they were in a position to help. (p. 150) There are many amusing stories in the book revolving around the way the young children had to fend for themselves while their parents sought work. In an effort to keep their apartment heated throughout an especially cold winter, the children tore apart the furniture, and when that was gone they began to use the wood from the walls. When the landlord came to see the apartment, he commented that he thought he had rented them a 4 room apartment when it was only a 3 room, not realizing they had torn out an entire wall. (p. 79) Even those relatives who had some money were not always eager to help the family. They were critical of the drunken father and for the mother who continued having children they could not support. Ironically, however, when there was a death in the family, everyone showed up ... Many argue against having a DNA database and many are for a database. I am going to argue against having a national DNA database because it has potential of being hacked, it is a violation of individual rights and DNA is not 100% accurate. To preserve history, senior leaders must uphold, teach, and pass down heritage and time honored traditions because heritage and tradition is what has shaped us into the military force we are today. This paper will cover the history of military salutes, its evolution, and the effects that it has on the military today. The military salute is a tradition that permeates within the military and dates many centuries. There are two distinct salutes used by the military today. The hand salute and the gun salute. The hand salute is a form of recognition and greeting between members in the armed services. There seems to be no true origin of the hand salute and it leads to a lot of speculation of how this gesture of trust and respect came about. Forms of the hand salute traces back to the Roman and Medieval Times. During the Roman times when assassinations were widespread and common, in order to see a public official, a citizen would have to raise their right hand to show that it was free of a weapon. In Medieval times, a knight in armor would raise their visors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Navy adopted the hand salute from the British Navy. This gesture, officially modified in 1820, evolved into the hand salute we use today. Some may think that hand salute is a sign of inferiority because juniors have to always salute seniors first but it is not. Throughout the two texts the authors, Bernard Evslin and Geraldine McCaughrean, who respectively rewrote Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus, use the literary elements of characterization and imagery to convey their shared theme. Through the use of characterization and imagery, both mythological protagonists, Phaethon and Icarus, demonstrate a common lesson that a prideful disregard of the warnings from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous consequences. First, in the story of Phaethon, Phaethon is characterized as a thoughtless and headstrong boy. These characteristics lead to catastrophic results, and help relate back to the main theme; A prideful disregard of the warnings from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous consequences. For example, while driving the sun chariot and contemplating flying closer to Earth so everyone will see him, Phaethon exclaims, Apollo said not to come too close to the Earth, but how will he know? This implies the Phaethon does not think about his actions, nor their consequences, and only does what benefits him and his reputation. Pietra Rivoli discusses about the t shirt that people wear everyday but not knowing the transformational factors hidden when making that t shirt globally. Corporations need a charter, and other forms of businesses, such as limited liability companies or partnerships, need other forms of registration. The purpose of this registration is usually to define the financial accountability the owners of the company have. It limits their risk to the amount they have invested in that particular organization. Financing Oral Health Care Services Financing Oral Health Care as Medically Necessary Public Health Care Service One core issue at the forefront of adding oral health care to the list of medically necessary services in Canada is financing. Oral diseases are estimated to be the fourth most expensive diseases to treat in most developed countries (Petersen et al., 2005; Petersen, 2003). The high cost associated with oral health care, coupled with economic challenges has forced many governments around the world to reduce their health care expenditure (Leake Birch, 2008). In Canada, some provincial governments provide limited but essential levels of oral health care coverage for vulnerable and needy groups such as children and older persons (Quiñonez, 2013). For instance, in the 1950s Newfoundland and Laborador had a province wide dental care program (Leake, 2006). Other provinces such as Manitoba, Bristish Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Alberta and the Norhtwest Territories followed suit with dental health programs for children and seniors during the 1970s and 1980s (Leake, 2006). However, the need to balance public operating budgets and reduce massive public debts led to the restructuring of the health care system, as well as, a financial squeeze in public health funding (David Naylor, 1999). This ultimately led to reduced public funding for oral health services, resulting in cancellation of provincial dental programs for children and seniors (Leake, 2006). This will cause the terrain to subside and damage buildings, pipelines, roads and other infrastructure. * The Polar Regions are key drivers of global weather patterns, and the changes caused by global warming could cause these regions to magnify the greenhouse effect. What can be done? Unfortunately, Polar Regions are highly vulnerable to climate change, and their natural and human systems have a low capacity for adapting. Indigenous communities with traditional life styles will have only limited opportunities to respond to the expected changes. Technologically developed communities, however, are likely to adapt their infrastructure and transport means to the new conditions and take advantage of new trade and commercial opportunities.

Classroom Implications of Recent into Literacy Development: From Predictors to Assessment and Toward a Research Based Assessment of Dyslexia: Using Cognitive Measures to Identify Reading Disabilities are the scholarly resources compared and evaluated. Differences Between Studies Each study utilized different methods to collect assessment information. Toward a Research Based Assessment of Dyslexia: Using Cognitive Measures to Identify Reading Disabilities used one hundred five participants from a random sample completed measures of reading achievement and cognitive abilities, based on a synthesis of current dyslexia research (Bell, S. A. 2003 encourage future researchers to continue to explore the role of visual processing in orthography and reading disabilities and to link findings on the cognitive underpinnings of learning to results from the emerging body of brain research. They also insist that the Test of Dyslexia (TOD) be refined to include a Word Memory subtest and modify or completely do away with the Visual Closure subtest as it is outdated and has many regressions. Shapiro, L. R., Hurry, J., Masterson, J., Wydell, T. They believe that a greater consistency in literacy assessments across research studies will further understand of reading difficulties. Through the extensive literature review, researchers in both studies have concluded that no one assessment tool is reliable enough to measure reading complications. These studies have found that multiple assessment tools must be used to evaluate students reading ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Cause And Effects Of The Chernobyl Disaster In 1986 Have you ever imagined the end of the Earth? Let s take the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 for example, and look at how the explosion affected some parts of the world. Large areas were affected by the Chernobyl explosion. Many things and properties were destroyed because of this. People, animals, and plants were affected by the explosion and it made many suffer. It took many people to begin cleaning up the mess, and they got sick. There is still a lot of damage there. It s very scary to know that an accident like this could occur again. A large area was affected by the explosion of Chernobyl. The bigger main areas that were really affected were Ukraine, parts of Russia, Europe, and Belarus. Ukraine was where the Chernobyl power plant was located so that was the area that was really affected. The gases spread to Russia, Europe and Belarus. It covered only most of Russia and Ukraine. It wrecked over 63,000 square miles and was mostly located in rural areas. In Ukraine there were gas exposures, devoured properties, and fire exposure. The fire exposure was what was still burning after the explosion, and a lot was fires that affected people. There were a lot of lapland animals dead from the outcome of the explosion, that were breathing in the gases and chemicals or that got injured from the explosion who have died. The gas exposure is the toxic chemicals getting outside in the air and the wind carries it around. Even if there is no wind, the chemicals are still flowing around in ... As anyone who has ever had their trash strewn all over their lawn can tell you, raccoons will stop at nothing to get their next meal. The problem with raccoons is that they are great at learning how to solve problems and once they learn how to solve it, it s unlikely that they will forget it. What does this mean for you? If a raccoon solves the puzzle of opening your garbage can or how to go through your pet door, it can wreak havoc on your patience. However, there are five guaranteed ways to get rid of those raccoons for good. It s all About the Food Raccoons are largely motivated by food, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You can either build a high privacy fence or install an electric fence. If you decide to go with a traditional fence, make sure that it is buried at least a foot underground and raises several feet above the ground. The fence cannot be chain link or mesh because they will climb right over it. Electric fences are the better choice when it comes to raccoons especially for small areas around a pond or a garden. These are harmless, effective and relatively cheap. Trapping Trapping a raccoon is another option that is available to you, however it requires a lot of patience and it may not work. Set the traps in an area that the raccoons frequent, but make sure that you clean the trap thoroughly and set it with latex gloves on; otherwise the raccoons will smell your scent and not go near the trap. Bait the trap and disguise it under some branches and leaves. Relocate the raccoon once you have trapped it in a wooded area that is at least 10 miles from you or your nearest neighbor. As already stated, raccoons are incredibly smart and there is no guarantee that it will work. Raccoons are adorable animals when they are in the woods, but when they invade our properties and refuse to go, they turn from cute to infuriating. Try some or all of these tips to get the raccoons to go, if all else fails call your local animal control office or a professional pest removal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gas Chromatography Lab Simple Distillation and Gas Chromatography The objective of the lab was to purify compounds that can be turned into gas at a reasonable temperature without using decomposition. Gas chromatography was also used to identify the proportions of the volatile compound in the different samples. The mixture of hexane and octane was assigned to me and my partner. The apparatus for simple distillation was assemble using a thermocouple, air condenser, distillation head, metal keck clamps, and a conical reaction vial. The joints of the glassware were greased before assembly. Four boiling chips were placed in the conical ration vial before it was assembled. After being assigned a mixture, 3.5 mL of the mixture was put into a reaction vial. The apparatus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was no distillate in the distillation head after 20 minutes on the setting of 40 so the Variac transformer was turned to 45. The first fraction was collected at 55.6°C. The ratio of hexane to octane was 87.437% to 12.563%. The second fraction was collected between 47.3°C and 40.5°C. 88.429% to 11.571% was the ratio of hexane to octane for this fraction. The third fraction was collected at 30.6°C, and the ratio of hexane to octane was 94.957% to 5.043%. The contents of the conical reaction vial were placed in a fourth vial and a chromatogram was obtained for it. The ration of hexane to octane was 7.501% to 92.499%. During the collection of the three fractions, a piece of the glass pipet broke off into the distillation head. The results of the experiment could have been incorrect because the glassware was not properly cleaned. The distillate also could have collected too fast which would have lowered the separations efficiency. From this information, infer that hexane has a lower boiling point than octane because most of the distillate was hexane. The majority of what was left in the conical reaction vial was octane because the temperature was not hot enough to turn it into a gas to go into the distillation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. My Rifle Research Paper I have got very many gifts and a bunch of unique, special gifts. This unreal item was a .308 caliber rifle. It was such an outrage of excitement as my parents were giving it to me. Three aspects of the gun stood out to me it had a great design to it, the size of the caliber, and the size of the gun itself. The design was an option of my choice, I had always wanted a rifle like this one. My rifle, in my opinion, has one of the most distinctive designs for a rifle. Starting at the stock of the gun, it was sleek, natural camouflage , synthetic stock. As you go up the gun, you arrive at the metal parts, and this matte finish of black really matched the stock, which gave it my attention as I focused on it at first glance. The barrel, at the peak of the gun adjacent to the opening system, was thick, so if I was to shoot multiple times in a row the barrel wouldn t warp after constant heating through the violent explosion of the cartridge as the bullets races through the end of the barrel. On the other hand, the bullet measurements were just as important. At the time I was given the gun, I wasn t very old or strong. If I was too have received this rifle in any caliber bigger than .308 I wouldn t have been able to shoot it. On the other side, the deer I was to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
