The Classic Text Of Power And Interdependence
International politics is simply defined as the academic principle which deals with the practical
realities of a state s interaction with another state or several other states. This essay will outline how
the classic text of Power and interdependence has shaped and continues to shape how we think
about international politics. Power and interdependence, published and authored by Robert
Keohane and Joseph Nye in 1977, was widely regarded as an influential book within the study of
international politics. The authors wanted to challenge the fundamental assumptions of traditional
and structural realism which at the time, focused on military and economic capabilities to identify
state behaviour.

The structure of the system...profoundly affects the nature of the regime...The regime, in turn,
affects and to some extent governs the political bargaining and daily decision making that occurs
within the system (Keohane, Nye,1977)
Power and interdependence continue to shape international politics through the introduction of the
new school of thought in the study of international relations of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism refers
to a school of thought which assumes that states are concerned with absolute gains rather than
relative gains to other states. Neoliberalism alongside neorealism is one of the most influential
contemporary approaches to international relations.
Keohane and Nye classic text of Power and Interdependence continues to shape how we think about
international politics through the introduction of the new school of thought within the study of
international relations, known as Liberalism. Liberalism is a theory of both governments within
states and good governance between states and peoples

The Beveridge Report On Social Insurance
The Beveridge report was announced in 1942 by William Beveridge who was a British
economist and social reformer. In 1942 William Beveridge was given a task of directing a
government report on Social Insurance and Allied Services. The beverage report was designed
to provide a full system of social insurance from cradle to the grave . It was also planned that all
people should pay a weekly support to the state. He came out with the Beveridge report which is
properly named as A Report on Social Insurance and Allied Services. It was introduced in order
to tackle the five giants of economic hardships Want, ignorance, idleness, squalor and disease
Want poverty was the key to social problem which affected everyone. However in 1946 the
National Insurance Act was introduced in order to provide comprehensive insurance. It provided
unemployment benefits, retirement pension and widow, maternity benefits. Ignorance this was
introduced to provide free education for children up to the age of 15. Idleness It was introduced
to maintain high levels of employment after war. William Beveridge understood that poverty and
unemployment were linked to a lack of information which hindered people in finding work.
Squalor this was a system of dropping slum areas and overcrowding areas during war. The
government aimed to build 200,000 houses a year New Towns Act (1946). Disease the NHS was
announced for British citizens to get medical, dental and optical services for free. Nevertheless the

Evolution Of Dolphins
The process of evolution can be very slow, and allows living creatures to develop an anatomy that
is structured for them to thrive (Dolphin Evolution). Evolution is the gradual development of a
creature, especially from a simple to a more complex organism. Many mammals have evolved
from one animal to another. For instance, dolphins has evolved from land animals to ocean
animals. All of the dolphins belong to the cetacean family, which also include whales, dolphins and
porpoises. Dolphins are now aquatic mammals who are very intelligent and curious. However,
what forces made them evolve? And what did Darwin mean by survive by the fittest ? Or what
principles of evolutionor survival are at work? (Samantha Paula)

Based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, The Little
Mermaid tells the story of a beautiful mermaid princess who dreams of becoming a human and

The theme in the story is similar to Plato s theme, because Ariel is blocked off from the outside
world and only when she finds a way to escape and see land, does she realize the endless
possibilities that await her.

A Brief Note On Robert Browning s Porphyria s Lover And...
Contributory Factors to the Murders in Robert Browning s Porphyria s Lover and The Laboratory.
The word love possesses such complexity and magnitude that people commonly have a hard time
defining it effectively without oversimplifying. Given the true intensity of feeling, jealousy is often
said to be synonymous with being in loveand the real impact love can have on a person can be
unpredictable. Considering this, The Cambridge Dictionary defines a crime of passion as a crime
committed because of very strong emotional feelings, especially in connection with a sexual
relationship. The poems Porphyria s Lover and The Laboratory by Robert Browning, although
significantly different, essentially share the theme of love and jealousy. In both poems, readers are
introduced to the darker side of romance through male and female speakers so overwhelmed with
emotion, they turn to murderas a means of expression. Using dramatic monologue, Browning
brilliantly explores the profound effect love can have on its victims and the psychological elements
leading to a crime of passion.
A dramatic monologue is defined as a form of monodrama in which the speaker addresses an
assumed listener or group of listeners (Kennedy 72). Although Browning mastered this genre during
the Victorian era, his poems were often greeted with misunderstanding and indifference (Simpson
1275). Along with his work featuring grotesque rhymes and jaw breaking diction (Simpson 1275),

An Analysis Of The Boat By Alistair Macleod
The theme in both the short story The Boat by Alistair Macleod and the poem Warren Pryor by
Alden Nowlan have direct connections. Both works reflect the theme of obligation versus
aspiration, and promote the message that it is difficult to be happy with a career chosen in order to
please someone else. In each story, the protagonists feel compelled to follow a path that is not their
own, but rather one chosen for them by their parents who are blind to the protagonist s true desires.
The narrator in The Boat is conflicted throughout the story as he tries to reconcile his own ambition
of attending university with the expectation he will continue the familytradition as a fisherman. At
the beginning of the story, he describes how his family is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He works hard and long for months until his father passes away, which lifts his burden and
permits him to follow his true calling by the end of the story. Were not for his father s death, the
narrator would have begrudgingly continued in a career chosen by necessity, not desire. In the
poem Warren Pryor, the protagonist finds himself in a similar situation, where he is obligated to
choose what his parents want for him. His parents are farmers, who want nothing more than
their son to have a professional job. They work incredibly hard to put Warren through school,
and aspire to spare him from their hardscrabble existence on the meagre acreage that bore them
down (Nowlan 4). They are elated when he finally graduates, as described in the line They
blushed with pride when, at his graduation,/they watched him pick up the slender scroll (Nowlan
5 6). When Warren becomes a bank teller, they are grateful that they were successful in giving
him what they believe is a better life. In the last stanza, however, it is revealed that Warren did
not have a say in his career choice and bore the expectations of his parents in silence. The poem
reveals that he said nothing (Nowlan 13) and describe him as having axe hewn hands upon the
paper bills/aching with empty strength and throttled rage (Nowlan 15 16). The reader can clearly

Christopher Columbus was born on October 30th, 1451 and died May 20th 1506. He was a
Genoese navigator, explorer, and colonizer, and was born in the Republic of Genoa (present Italy).
He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean for Catholic Monarchs of Spain. Those
voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements on the island of Hispaniola, initiated the
Spanish colonization of the New World. During the 15th and 16th centuries, leaders of several

The westerlies occuring at that time in the Azores had failed previous attempts to sail to the west,
but in the Canaries the fleet could pick up the northeast trade winds; supposedly, they could rely on
the westerlies for their return. The three ships set out from San SebastiГЎn de la Gomera after
nearly a month in the Canaries, on September 6th . On numerous occasions in September
through early October sailors spotted various plant life floating in the sea and different types of
birds in the sky, which are all signs of land nearby. Despite the evident signs of land, by October
10th the crew began to go restless. They complained that their failure to reach land, contrary
winds and a shortage of supplies would keep them from returning to Spain. Columbus managed to
diminish their fears, at least temporarily. On October 12th land was sighted by sailors from the
Pinta but Columbus being on the NiГ±a later claimed the privilege for himself. The place of the
first Caribbean landfall, called Guanahani, is hotly disputed, but San Salvador Island in the

Potato Latkas Research Paper
The Jewish community is distinguished by a rich history, rooted in traditions that have been in
place for thousands of years, many customs, and possibly the most are dietary in nature. Foods
like potato latkas1, falafel2, and fried doughnuts are traditionally eaten during my favorite festival,
Chanukah3, a Jewish festival that commemorates the miracle of the anointing oil that burned for
eight days during the rededication process of the Temple in Jerusalem.4 Although Hanukkah5 is
an eight day festival, the best night is the last when my family has the nonpareil dinner. A great
effort is made in order for this glorious dinner to occur. My father usually begins the night by
heating up the vegetable oil early in the evening to make all the fried foods which are the most
important part. Fried foods like potato latkas are traditional in Hanukkah... Show more content on

Cooking the potato latkas is my favorite part. Potato latkas are creamy mash potatoes that are fried
in sizzling oil resulting in the crispy goodness of a perfect potato pancake. I remember the first time
we made them, they were disgusting! They were too salty and mushy, others burnt and others
turned out black which was certainly not appealing to the tastebuds. The irony of the situation was
that my dad is somewhat of a chef and he had never made anything unappetizing until that day and
as a result of that farcical moment we have adjusted the recipe, but Hanukkah has never been the
same. In spite of the fact that it was our first failed attempt, the memory allows me to remember that
incident every Hanukkah hence making it a tradition in my household. Once we began making the
potato latkas I realized that there is no Hanukkah without them. I reminisce about sitting around the
table with my family, enjoying laughs as well eating the potato goodness that melts in my mouth

Essay On Health Disparity In African American Men
The higher incidence of prostate cancer in African American/Black men compared to other racial
/ethnic groups is a major health disparity. The statistics surrounding this health disparity are scary,
with African American men having a prostate cancer mortality rate twice as high as whites and a
prostate cancerincidence two thirds higher (Modlin, 2012). The health disparity of African
American men s incidence of prostate canceris a huge problem from a public health perspective
because it makes African American men less productive, there are higher costs in the healthcare
field than would be if the gap didn t exist, and a loss of sense of control from African American men
because of financial concerns/aftermath of treatment. One behavioral influence... Show more

A biological influence on this health disparity is a genetic predisposition seen in African
American men. Several studies have shown a chromosome that is more common in African
American men that increases the risk of prostate cancer. The chromosome is 8q24 variants,
which is the most commonly seen, as well as, BCL2 and EphB2 linking to a higher incidence of
prostate cancer (Modlin, 2012). The genetic predisposition has also been proven to cause prostate
cancer to be a more aggressive disease in African Americans, likely leading to the higher mortality
rates. The behavioral influence of being less likely to get screened and the biological influence of a
genetic predisposition interact to influence the health disparity. There is no way of changing the
genetic predisposition so that already puts African American men in a place for higher incidence.
Being they already have that higher incidence due to genetics, adding into the equation African
Americans being less likely to be screened only makes the health disparity

Poisonous Jellyfish Man of War comes to U.S Soil
Let the Jaws theme song begin.
In recent news, several Portuguese Man of Wars were spotted off the shore of New Jersey, the
organism usually found in warmer waters equator region, usually as far north as Florida waters.
Although, it looks like a blue jellyfish, it is not.
Instead it is made of several organisms called a siphonophore (http:/

together as a group to survive and happen to have tentacles just like a jelly fish. Only this also
happens to be very toxic and painful to get stung by. Unlike Jellyfish, these Man of Wars have no

Although the venom for humans is very seldom a fatal wound, it will still deliver a painful than
hell wound even though it s dead, which sucks. The venom is there to help immobilize prey and
kill it so that the organism can feast upon the meal after all is said and done. Then the tentacles
bring the meal to the little bubble like head for the organism that make up the Man of War to feast
upon.
Using caution around the Man of Wars.
Of course after the sightings of the invertebrates, New Jersey officials of the Poison Information
and Education System released a press release (http://www.njpies.org/PDFs/News and Events

the beach to stay away from them. The reason being that in water, the tentacles may warp around
your body thereby ending up with several painful sting wounds and making it difficult for you to
swim back to shore.
Although the invasion seems like it an unlikely occurrence it actually is not and it is not the first
time the Man of Wars have been found drifting on shores and waters not native to their region in
warm waters. But also they usually travel in groups so this increases the risk for all the swimmers
and such in the water. Hence the press release with all the info on what to do when you encounter

Meaning In Art
The meaning of a unadorned sculpture that one passes by on a routine bases, can end up having a
much more monumental and deep meaning than what an individual may have discerned. Untitled

Clark Community College campus. A strong representation of many different feelings is given
off to the buildings, its surroundings, and the students and faculty that walk among it. Each
physical characteristic comes together to design the horse and can be analyzed to have
meanings like recognition, nobility, and guidance. Outside Trimpe Hall on Lewis and Clark
Community College campus sits a majestic, light brown, wood colored figure. It is placed
directly on the ground, along the side of a little stone pathway. Little patches of grass are peeking
up through the mulch. The shape of the statue resembles that of a horse. As you move closer to
the artwork you notice pieces of logs are carved in a perfect way in order to intertwine between
each other leaving just the right amount of spaces in between. The front end, which faces the
parking lot, is slightly facing downwards, as if it were avoiding something in the distance. The
horse has a strong stance with a sturdy body structure. Architecturally, the horse holds a beautiful

there is monetary policy or fiscal policy intervention are appropriate in assisting policy makers

However, they are rarely complete models and often outcomes cannot be predicted.
Reintroduction of a theory suggests that new evidence in support of the theory has been

THE EFFECT OF AUDIT ON CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY, GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT By J. R. A. Adefiranye
Abstract For profitability and liquidity, companies need adequate finances. Finance stakeholders
(that is, shareholders, creditors and other financial lenders) are the providers of these finances.
Their interests and beliefs in the activities of the companies are required to make them invest. A
recent share investments survey in Lagos and Abuja, involving 100 respondents covering investors
and prospective investors (60 and 40 respondents respectively), revealed that 70 percent of the
investors place heavy reliance on the integrity of a company s auditor before investing in that
company. 80 percent of the prospective investors chose never to advance money of whatever form
to any company because they have lost confidence in audit firms. This, they hinged on the fact that
companies, despite their stunning performance reports attested to by audit firms, still go bankrupt.
Using questionnaires and interviews, we gathered relevant data from investors, prospective
investors, audit firms and some financial institutions (banks) for this study. We analysed these data
using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis tools. It was discovered that there is a very
strong link between audit and finance stakeholders

Coca Cola wanted to continue its international expansion because it believed that the U.S.
market would eventually reach maturity, and that growth prospects were better overseas. For
much of its initial expansion, Coca Cola followed a localization strategy, allowing each country
unit to manage its own operations. QUESTION 2: Why did Coca Cola change its initial
strategy? What strategy did Coca Cola start to pursue in 2000? What were the benefits of this
strategy to Coca Cola? What were the drawbacks? ANSWER 2: In the 1980s, Coca Cola
changed its strategy from a localization approach where individual country units essentially ran
their own operations, to a more centralized approach where key management and marketing
activities took place at the company headquarters in Atlanta. The company extended this strategy
to include foreign bottlers. By taking equity stakes in the bottlers, Coca Cola was able to exert
greater control over them. Coca Cola made the shift to the global standardization strategy
because it believed that by doing so, the company could gain significant economies of scale.
However, by 2000, the company was ready to change its strategy once again. Coca Cola was
losing market share to companies that used a more localized strategy, and under the guidance of its
new CEO, Coca Cola began once again to give local managers more decision making power. This
time however, while giving country managers the autonomy to tailor product

Changes In African American Culture
All throughout American history, there have been many conflicts involving equality and obeying
the social norms. Women and African Americans are the citizens that have faced the most
adversity in these problems, but they both also have overcame these adversities and made
changes that would go on to change the nation forever. Before World War II, women faced
pressure from society to stay at home and support a family while their husbands worked and had
fun, and they lacked the rights and respect that men were already granted. Also before World War
II, African Americans were isolated from society and had no rights, until the Harlem Renaissance

Women were expected to marry at very early ages, usually between 17 and 20 and they were still
to slave at home for their husbands and children. Women previously had fought for higher
education, but suddenly they were going to college to meet a husband, or they were not going
to college at all, as they feared higher education would make marriage more difficult (Friedan,
1963). Women were gladly conforming to these expectations as they all aimed to have four or
five kids, live in a suburban neighborhood where they could kiss their husband goodbye as they
left for work and they could cook and clean while their children were at school. Many women
even turned down job opportunities and claimed it was because all they ever wanted was to be a
housewife (Friedan, 1963). However, women slowly began to realize their conformity was not
what they wanted for themselves at all. In the 1960 s, many housewives reported that they had felt
there was no point in their day to day routines, they had felt depressed in their own homes without a
clue why, and getting so angry with their children it scared them. These women were afraid to
admit that they wanted more for themselves besides their husband and children (Friedan, 1963).
However, women were able to fight this expectation through the sexual liberation movement. The
women were empowered by this movement because it gave them more freedom to do what they

The Use Of Deceptation In Shakespeare s Hamlet By William...
Throughout history, Shakespeare s works have been able to captivate and enchant audiences of all
backgrounds. His words have an undeniable ability to sway a crowd s emotions and truly affect
them. His plays are timeless pieces of art considered the foundations of English literature.
Shakespeare s most dramatic and infamous tragedy, Hamlet, has earned its place as a cornerstone. In
the play, Shakespeare poetically writes speeches that reveal the true colours of the characters,
whether good or devious. The main antagonist, Claudius, exposes his treachery to the audience,
through his speech to his wife Gertrude. Those living during Shakespeare s times, the Elizabethans,
were the first to witness Claudius deception and were able to fully appreciate the play. Claudius
conversation with Gertrude in Act 4, Scene 5 of Hamlet effectively targets the Elizabethan audience
through the clever use of literary tools and the connections to aspects of Elizabethan society.
Hamlet is a prime example of Shakespeare s brilliant literary wit that was able to target the
Elizabethan audience and Claudius speech is no exception. There was no such thing as special
effects in the Elizabethan Era, so metaphors helped to create a picture for the audience in Claudius
speech. He explains Ophelia s distress by exclaiming, When sorrows come, they come not single
spies/But in battalions (4.5.52 53). It is difficult at times to envision a character s emotions and this
metaphor allows the audience to

Controversical Actions Of Witchcraft In Arthur Miller s...
In my opinion i believe that The Crucible is based on hysterical. The reason being because they don
t really have any prove or anything that shows that witchcraft existed. I feel like the girls just
wanted attention brought to themselves. So that s why i think they started to admit or say that they
talked to the devil, demands and associated with witchcraft. Clearly the trials are begun by the
wagging of tongues after the girls are found in the woods, but gossip certainly has a more
enduring role. Hysterica supplants logic and enables people to believe that their neighborhoods,
whom they have always considered upstanding people, are committing absurving unbelievable
crimes, communicating with the devil, killing babies, and so on. Abigail and the other girls
falsely testify that certain individuals are involved in witchcraft and have begun a community
members. She is accusing people of having connections with the devil and she is influencing the
other girls to join in and accuse innocent townspeople. In the play, this is the first example of
assumptions being made by Abigail.During the trials every girls fake illness and gets caught up. In
the Crucible, the townsfolk accept and become active in the hysterical climate. Not only out of
genuine religious piety but also because it gives them a chance to express repressed sentiments and
to act on long held grudges. Like the most obvious case that i think is Abigail who uses the
situation to accuse

of Newsweek from August 9,1943 described the riot in great detail, ?Within a half hour Harlem?s

vehicles until everything had calmed down about two days after the riots. Stores closed either due
to damage or due to fear of repetition of damage, and they did not reopen until about two days
after as well. The Mayor also enacted prohibition throughout Harlem during and immediately
following the riots (NY Times 8). La Guardia also brought emergency food supplies to relieve
burned out shops and houses, which gained him popularity among the black population. The
amount of damage the riots entailed not only affected the people and city of Harlem, but the race
relations all over the country.
The Harlem Riots had a definitive start, but the build up to rioting varied among the sources used.

Harlem lacked the parks and recreation needs of its people and therefore caused the riot, along with

trails that took months to reach the west coast. In addition to people, things like mail, supplies,
and trade goods could now be shipped across the country in a few days. This helped revolutionize
the era of the 1800s and made delivery not only faster, but safer. Though, what would you believe

Houses wouldn t have been built because wood wasn t able to be transported. Population would
differ dramatically in the cities near the railroad as well. For example, cities like Sacramento,
Nevada, Utah, Nebraska, and Omaha wouldn t have as many people living there if it wasn t for
the railroad. As many are aware, the four main time zones were created because the railroads.
Before time zones took place, scheduling arrival times were a nightmare. Time zones today are
very helpful and they give us a better understanding of when a delivery may occur. Without the
big railroad companies taking it upon themselves to create time zones, we would more than
likely still be using one local time. Confusion would hit the ceiling about when a delivery may
take place somewhere across the states. Also, if you take away time zones, you take away day light
savings. If ou take away day light savings, you take away an extra hour of sleep in March.
Irish and Chinese immigrants also helped construct the railroad and gave them employment;
approximately 12,000 Chinese immigrants. Many came to America for a better lifestyle. If there
was never any railroad work that needed to be done, more than likely they would have gone back.
Therefore, America today would have far less Chinese and Irish Immigrants. As you can figure, the

Ocean Acidification Becomes Emerging Issue
Our oceans are slowly become contaminated to unbearable levels due to acidification. According to
Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease of the pH
of global seawaters. Oftentimes acidification is the aftermath of negligent human activity, along
with other more natural causes. Acidification takes place when carbon dioxide is leaked into ocean
waters. (Funk and Wagnalls 1) Over the past several decades, oceans have absorbed about 2 billion
metric tons of the approximately 7 billion metric tons of carbon that are released as CO2 into the
atmosphere each year. (Raisman 2) It has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the most common omissions that take place are oil spills. Oil spills become a crucial
issue, because they happen frequently and easily, but the aftermath effects are extremely
difficult to recover from. As reported by James Sadd, oil spills are caused by a variety of
reasons, but more frequently due to mistakes made by humans. Sadd goes on to state that typical
oil spill appears as a gelatinous mousse floating on top of ocean waters. When oil spills enter the
ocean, it results in organisms suffocating or becoming too coated in the substance to survive.
(Sadd 2) One of the worst case scenarios of this was the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Economic damages
totaled more than $5 billion. Federal estimates of wildlife mortality include 3,500 to 5,500 otters;
580,000 seabirds; and 300 deer poisoned by eating oiled kelp. (Sadd 2)
Oil spills can be fixed, but oftentimes put so much pollution into the environment that no solution
can take place quickly enough to stop the damages. Sunlight can help degrade some of the oil if
exposed for long enough. (Sadd 3) In his article, Sadd also states that sometimes microorganisms
act as oil eating creatures through a process called natural biodegrading. (3) In most cases the
remainder of the oil will wash up on coasts across the country, which can still cause

Social Tension Between Babo And Cereno
When Captain Amasa Delano visits the San Dominick, he notices the tension between Babo and
Don Benito Cereno while Babo is shaving Benito Cereno s beard, not unaffected by the close
right of the gleaming steel, Don Benito nervously shuddered (Melville 74). The tension between
Babo and Cereno is ironic because Captain Delano does not understand what is actually going on
between the two characters. As the social tension between Babo and Cereno rises, the aesthetic
tension created by Melville between Delano and the ship rises as well. Melville as a writer creates
tension, and that tension is rooted in irony. The close reading of the shaving scene shows how
Melville uses irony to contribute to the social tension between the two characters and... Show more

is under. When Babo proclaims to Delano, and for the first tie in so many a day, the irony is
reinforced again. This is not the first time that Cereno has been hurt by Babo, and the scene that
Delano is viewing is not the scene that is actually taking place. As Melville builds tension between

The Process Of Conducting Research
Procedure
The process of conducting research is to gather information that relates to your I search question.
The I search question that I am seeking answers to happens to be; what is the definition of family
in today s society? There are many methods of investigation that can be used to answer this question
, but I have limited it to eight methods. The eight methods I have chosen are going to give me in
depth information about my purposed I search question.
The first method of investigation for my I search project that would best help me gather
information for my project is interviewing both in person and by email. The interview process is
beneficial to my project because it gives me in depth and comprehensive information. The
interviews will consist of ordinary people in todays, society both younger and older the young will
be aged from four to thirty and old will consist of anyone over thirty. I am doing the interviews to
gain answers to my secondary questions which are based on gender and age. Also interviews
provide personal experiences and better understanding of the subject matter in this case family.
The second method of investigation will be scholarly journals. I am using journals because family
is a big topic to be covered and it has been discussed and written about over many years. Many
psychologists have written about what defines a family and how it has changed over time. These
Journals will help me show that the definition is outdated and how it should be

The Pearl Of Great Price By Joseph Smith Jr.
Joseph Smith Jr. was born in Sharon, Vermont on December 23, 1805. Smith was characterized as
being literate, but far from well educated. His family s rough existence led them across Vermont
and eventually to Rochester, New York. It was here, in the spring of 1820, that Joseph Smith
retired to a secluded grove of trees behind his house and said a prayer for guidance about whether
to join the Presbyterians as his mother demanded, or whether to join the credo of the Baptists, take
up the faith of the Methodists, or follow some other of the contending sects within Christianityat the
time. It was here Joseph Smith claimed to receive his first of many visions. Smith claimed that God

include the book of Moses (a revision of parts of Genesis), the Book of Abraham, The Book of
Joseph Smith Matthew (a revision of Matthew 24) and the book of Joseph Smith History (his

The Pueblo Revolt Of 1680
From an evangelical standpoint, the 20,000 Native American Christian converts by 1675 and the
establishment of 36 churches in a new land is progress for the church. However, from a native
perspective, conversion may be seen as a submissive last resort and sad desertion of traditional,
shamanistic beliefs. Priests often destroyed idolatrous statues/buildings that can be viewed as
testaments to years of cultural development of a belief system. (Also, in addition to conversion,
they had to become Spaniard by culture (dress, language, etc.) and therefore give up their native
identity. The Pueblo revolt of 1680 caused major setbacks for the Spanish empire in Mexico,
counteracting years of progress and wasted money and resources. However,

Art, Surrealism, and the Grotesque Essay
The term grotesque in art and literature, commonly refers to the juxtaposition of extreme contrasts
such as horror and humor, or beauty and monstrosity, or desire and revulsion. One function of this
juxtaposition of the rational and the irrational is to subdue or normalize the unknown, and thereby
control it.
The simultaneity of mutually exclusive emotional states, and the discomfort it might cause, inspires
a Freudian analytic critical approach because of its focus on controlling repressed desires through
therapeutic rationality.
There are volumes of Freudian art criticism, which typically begin by calling attention to
manifestations, in some work of art, of the darkest desires of the id. Perhaps in no field ... Show

In this discussion, I hope to put a different spin on surrealism and the grotesque by drawing on
the works of Sartre, and if we re not too dizzy from spinning when all is said and done, I shall
have put together a way to investigate the grotesque in Modernist art and contemporary life. After
a summary of the surrealist s use of Freud and a look at Sartre s criticism of surrealism, we will
look at surrealism in Sartre s work and derive an existentialist definition of the grotesque and
examine how this might reconfigure the surrealist goal of liberation. Surrealist art is almost always
analyzed in terms of
Freudian psychoanalytic theory because the surrealists openly announced Freud s study of the
psyche as the inspiration for the practice of surrealism. Andr‚ Breton, author of the many
surrealist Manifestoes and the self appointed spokesman and scribe of the surrealist movement,
eulogized Freud, who died in
1939, by writing that: . . .the death of Freud is enough to render the future of psychoanalytic ideas
uncertain, and threatens once again to turn an exemplary instrument of liberation into an instrument
of oppression (Breton 282).
The liberation to which Breton refers, has to do with the freeing of unconscious expression,

long to figure out who is behind it. That very night Holmes runs Julia s and Helen s potential
killer back up the rope and back to its master, Roylott, where it then kills him instead (Doyle,
1994, p. 171). Doyle makes the crime significant to the reader because it involves a young
woman who is in danger of losing her life if someone does come and save her, and he makes it
memorable too because it is significant that Helen s own stepfather Roylott would be trying to
murder her.
The Man with the Twisted Lip Doyle in The Man with the Twisted Lip describes to the readers a
crime spoken of by Holmes of a man named Neville St. Clair who has went missing without a
trace. The reader learns of no body being found, and leads some to suspect that Neville St. Clair
might not even be dead. This was the start of modern day cold cases. If you do not have a body it
is kind of hard to start an investigation. However, Holmes does what he can and makes the case
interesting. Sherlock Holmes states, there were no signs of violence upon any of these
garments, and there were no traces of Mr. Neville St. Clair (Doyle, 1994, p. 120). These
garments Holmes speaks of belong to Mr. Neville St. Clair, but there are no signs of violence
towards him as saw by the state of his clothes. This then furthers the significance of the crime
because at first it seems to be a murder case, but

The Allende Governance A New Governance Essay
After the fall of the Allende governance a new governance was applied which led to rise of free
market economy through the use of different reforms like privatization and deregulation. With
low level of understanding in economics Pinochet hired economists who were tasked with
freeing the economy from the previous destruction caused by socialists. According to De Haan
by 1970 Chile recorded least freedom in its economy (De Haan et al 220). But later the economy
started experiencing major growth from 1980s which increased economic growth from7.2 percent
compared to other countries in South America. While the country economic progress has received
international recognition, their development hasn t been easy as it has faced major critical
moments to their economic success. For example during the 1982 recession the gross domestic
product dropped by 14.1 % which resulted to overvaluation of their currency which made the
currency more vulnerable to harsh changes in international economy. This changes led to decrease
in capital which decreased availability of finance meant to finance investments. According to
Buchi this led to an increase in unemployment by 23% and decrease in salaries and wages by over
10% (Buchi 10). Years later Chile has been able to experience economic growth especially in the
1980s compared with other countries in South America who underwent similar crises. This success

Religious Freedom In The United States
There are many things that comply to the importance of religious freedom. Many of which we

are even a few laws that comply to religious freedom, for example the 1998 International Religious
Freedom Act (IRFA) , this law issues to the United Statesto criticize mistakes that comply to
religious freedom. It also helped advocate the right of religious freedom.
Even though Congress thought it was essential in the IRFA to make clear how easily we can

Religious freedom isn t just being able to practice whatever religion you want, it also complies to
the separation a church and state. This meaning that the government has absolutely no right to
punish us for doing something non Christian in the church. So in theory, they can not punish us for
committing sins within the church. Back in 1700, they would use pillories to humiliate the sinner,
or even if the sin was bad enough, hang them. Other punishments back in 1700 include; having a T
branded into their hand for theif , being whipped multiple times, or just normal public humiliation.
Of course some of these are harsh punishments, like hanging them for committing a simple sin.
That s why religious freedom is so important, if it wasn t for religious freedom, the world as we
know it wouldn t be like the way it is today. Many people of the world don t have religious
freedom like we do and they have to constantly hide their worships, if they get caught, well it s

Essay On The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, written by Washington Irving, is a gothic story centered on the
town of Sleepy Hollow. Irving is said to have moved to a similar kind of town in New York when
he had to move from the city due to fears of a yellow fever epidemic (McGann 355). The story
was written in 1819, during a time of exploration and discovery in the United States. This is
reflected in the story through ghosts and other magical beings, as people questioned religion and
how the world worked. In the story, the town is said to have a spell cast upon it, causing people
to see things that are not there and resulting in many different tales and superstitions created by the

Essay on Apostolic Ministry in Rome
Apostolic Ministry in Rome
According to tradition, there are two apostles who ministered in Rome. While some modern
scholars question whether the Apostle Peter was ever in Rome, he is certainly the most celebrated
Apostle of the city. A simple example of this is that the largest basilica in Rome (and one of the
largest in the world) is named in honor of Saint Peter. The Apostle Pauls existence in Rome is less
disputed and even though he is less commemorated nearly two millennia later. The circumstances
surrounding Peter and Paul s arrivals in Rome, their ministries in Rome, and their deaths are worth
examining since these two figures are still remembered nearly two millennia after their ministries in
Rome.

Physical And Physical Development Of Children
Physical development of children correlates to other areas of development, for example, fine and
gross motor and results in healthy development of the brain. A teacher should observe and assess
the development of the learners fine motor coordination and gross motor developmental milestones
during outdoor play. However, children grow at different rates, which is an indication that a child
may regress in a skill or reach a milestone earlier than another.
Therefore, teachers should use the developmental milestones as a general guideline to developing
the learners physically. The teacher must develop enjoyment of the physical activityto encourage
the children to better approach the tasks and thus lay a strong foundation for life long health. ...

sit ups, the feet will be held and the fingers curled over the student s ears.
The students will run on the field track between 10 and 20 minutes. The ability to throw and catch
the ball will be evaluated on accuracy. The students should able to easily combine different kinds of
movements, such as jumping to catch a ball and running with it. They should also be able to catch
the balls without holding them against their body. Further, they should be able to jump rope while
holding it.
The girls attained excellent results in rope skipping as opposed to the boys who exhibited novice
skills for they had just began to demonstrate a low level of knowledge regarding the skill. The
boys were better at gross motor skills especially in sit ups, push ups, and

Essay on Battle of Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina. The fort is in Charleston s harbor. The fort
was not even complete when war broke out. This was a big turning point for the United States of
America. It separated the north from the south and in some cases it separated families. This war
would impact how the United Statessaw slavery. It is the most deadly war that the United States has
every seen in its history. It all began with the secession of South Carolina. After this an
understanding was established between the authorities in Washington and the members of Congress
from South Carolina. They both agreed that the forts, Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, would not be

Anderson refused even though that the lack of supplies would force him to evacuate. He replied to
Beauregard that unless he received instructions or supplies from Washington by noon April 15 he
would evacuate. (The atlas of the Civil War) On April 11 Gen. Beauregard sent Maj. Anderson the
following communication: Headquarters Provisional Army, C.S.A. Charleston, April 11, 1861
Sir; The government of the Confederate States has hitherto foreborne from any hostile
demonstrations against Fort Sumter, in hope that the government of the United States with a view
to the amicable adjustment of all questions between the two governments, and to avert the
calamities of war would voluntarily evacuate it. There was reason at one time to believe that such
would be the course pursued by the government of the United States, and under that impression my
government has refrained from making any demand for the surrender of the fort. But the
Confederate States can no longer delay assuming actual possession of a fortification commanding
the entrance of one of their harbors and necessary to its defense and security. I am ordered by the
government of the Confederate States to demand the evacuation of Fort Sumter. My aides, Col.

Essay on Naturalism and Realism
Beginning in the late 19th century, two separate movements spread across America know as
realism and naturalism. While the two were very similar in their beliefs and ideals there were still
many apparent distinctions to differentiate the two. Realism and naturalism showed themselves in
many aspects of life, from art and sciences to new math techniques and even religion. However,
above all else these movements may have been most evident in the literature of this time. Reading
through American literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it becomes perceptible which
short stories portray realism and which represent nationalism. Mark Twain s humorous tale, The
Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country, clearly shows Twain s... Show more content on

As Bierce explains, The man who was engaged in being hanged was apparently about thirty five
years of age. He was a civilian, if one might judge from his habit, which was a planter. An
attention to specific details is given especially in Part I when the setting is being described.
Countless adjectives are used, giving the reader the understanding of the scene so that they can
feel as if they are sitting in and watching everything mentioned take place. Again, diction is used
although not in the same way as Twain had used it. Instead, a type of southern slang is used,
denoting people from the North as Yanks and to flax as tow. Finally, the last part of this story is
made up on the lead character s daydream which shows that Bierce was focusing on the psychology
of the character, another very realist thing to do in literature. Stephen Crane s ideas varied from
those of Twain and Ambrose as shown in his short story, The Open Boat. In the story, the crewmates
of a diminutive boat are caught in a storm. This is clearly more depressing than the stories of the
other two authors cited but it also sanctions nature to play a substantial role. In naturalism, nature
often acts as a force that humanity cannot control. The storm represents Crane s belief in

DVD s During the years we have seen so much progress with technology, we have seen
advancements in the media aspect (VHS, DVD s, and television), cell phones and the internet. But
the one I find that isn t as recognized as most in my opinion would be DVD s. DVD s have
expanded so much since their release in 1996, they have become more detailed, high def, and
affordable compared to other technology costs. During this research I will try and help you
learn the history of the DVD, the knowledge of how DVD s were created, and the different types
of DVD s there are. When it comes to DVD s how many of us actually no the process of them
being made or when they were actually produced? Not many, we know that they have been
around for years and have progressed in different types of DVD s such as blu rays. But in the
early 90 s two high destiny optical storage standards were being developed: one was the
multimedia compact disk (MMCD) backed by Phillips and Sony, and the other was the super

Electric, Pioneer, Thomson, and JVC. ( History ) Lou gerstner was acting as a matchmaker which
led to uniting the two camps behind a single standard. This resulted in a repeat of the cost format
war between VHS and Betamax in the 1980 s! While Phillips and Sony have their own ideas, the

Essay on Mother s Leisure Satisfaction
Introduction
A women s leisure style changes abruptly upon the arrival of children because she is no longer
only responsible for her personal needs, but the needs of other human beings. Her time is no
longer her own; she coordinates eating, sleeping, school, and homework schedules. In addition to
juggling these activities, she has a marriage to sustain, as well as her own personal matters. This
can be a lot for one person to handle and leaves little time for personal leisure pursuits for any
mother. Mothers tend to be hard workers, as they spread themselves thin amongst all of the children
who are dependent upon them for life. This sense of duty a mother feels towards her children is so
strong, many mothers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Constraint. Anything that hinders a mothers ability to participate in intrinsic leisure.
Satisfaction. The fulfillment of drives, motives, needs, or expectations (Siegenthaler amp; O Dell,
2000, p.285).
Leisure. The freedom to perform activities in life, not done by obligation, but by free will.
Delimitations
The delimitations in our study are as follows:
1. By design, the study is delimited to stay at home mothers with children still living in the home.
To minimize lurking variables we have chosen not to survey working mothers or mothers who are
currently enrolled and attending school at a university.
2. Our group of study will include only women who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
day Saints.
3. All of the women we are studying are married.
4. All women participating in the study must have the adapted IQ of 80 or above, due to
specifications stated on the Leisure Satisfaction Measure.
Limitations
The limitations of our study are as follows:
1. A weakness in our study is location. Perhaps a mother s leisure satisfaction is dependant on
the town in which she lives or the recreational opportunities and services around her. Leisure is
viewed differently by someone living on a farm in Nebraska than it is by someone who lives in
New York City. The person who lives in the city has countless options of things to go and do which
are close by, while the person living in a rural setting might need more time

Pear Shape Diamond Engagement Ring Pros And Cons
The pear shape diamond cut is known as a modified brilliant cut diamond, which is a combination of
two different cuts. Those cuts are the marquise cut and the round brilliant. It combines the best of
both cuts into an interesting diamond shape.
Pear shape diamonds have to be evenly cut since the parts of the curve should match on the
shoulders. The typical length of the pear cut ranges from 1.40 to 1.70, and the choice of ratio is
often a personal preference. Some women like long diamonds while others want wider diamonds.

A 1 carat brilliant round might cost thousands while a 1 carat pear shape will be a fraction of the
cost. That cost depends on the diamonds and metal that accompanies the pear shape diamond, too.
Cons of the Pear Shaped Diamond Engagement Ring
Bow Tie Effect
With some diamonds, you ll get a bow tie effect that will mar the interior of the diamond. It s a
light to dark shadow that looks like a bow tie inside the diamond. While some people think the
bow tie gives the diamond character, others don t appreciate anything blocking the light of the
diamond. The pear shape cut will always have a bow tie effect, but in some diamonds it s more
pronounced.
Symmetry
As mentioned previously, the shoulders or upper curves of the pear cut should be symmetrical. In
some bad cuts, you ll see two shoulders that don t match. While this isn t common, it can happen
with some bad cutters. It s vital to be aware of this problem.
Pointed Tip
The pointed tip of the diamond is prone to breakage. It s also the spot where there can be
inclusions or flaws because it s the spot that was closest to the edge of the raw diamond before it
was cut. You can minimize damage by having an extra prong to protect the fragile point of the

Bill Clinton s Popularity Despite the Scandals Essay
The name William Jefferson Bill Clinton either creates a negative image or a positive image in the
minds of most Americans. Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States of America and
served two consecutive terms. He is one of the most popular presidents in history right up there with
Kennedy and even Abraham Lincoln. Nevertheless, there are a group of Americans that remember
President Clinton in a negative light. These Americans could be described as the moral majority or
the Christian right. These Americans remember the disgrace and shame that the office of the
presidency suffered throughout the sex scandal and impeachment of President Clinton. Did the sex

A large number of Americans now believe that a political figure such as a president, senator,
judge, etc. has a right to their own private life; and that immoral behavior does not reflect on how
they govern or perform their job duties. President Clinton s approval rating did go down for a
short time during the impeachment but it went up very quickly above 70 percent which indicates
the public did not believe the scandal would impair President Clinton s abilities to govern. Well, he
is just human and no one is perfect.
President Clinton is certainly human and makes mistakes, just like all of us do. But he has this
ability to reach out to the common man and woman. He is very likable and is probably one of the
greatest speakers in America. When he was President of the United States he would be seen in the
media doing everyday things like jogging around the neighborhood, eating at fast food restaurants
such as McDonald s, appearing on talk shows, and playing the saxophone. He seems common
enough; and these qualities make him more acceptable to the American voters. The people feel he
is just like us, which is true as far as being a human. But he does have a wee bit more power and
influence than most common Americans. Yes, these attributes helped to keep his ratings high
during the scandals he faced while in the White House. ABC News put forward this statement
concerning Clinton in reference to

The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom...
The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom Instruction
Most schools, both local and international, are now venturing into using mobile computing devices
for classroom instruction. Thus, La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) pioneered the use of tablets in the
classrooms at the later part of 2012 and named this endeavor as the PERsonal Learning device
(PEARL) program. During its initial stage, students of the honors classes were selected as its
participants. On the following year around eight to nine sections in the High School level opted to
join the said program. However, during the course of the said program implementation, certain
issues have been raised that needed to be addressed by the school especially in the area of
student learning. Based on a study made by a group of LSGH High School teachers last February
2014 on the effectiveness of using tablets in Grade 10 English classes, it has been observed that
there is no distinct difference between the non tablet and tablet classes in terms of student
performance. This may be attributed to the following: 1). there is no definite strategic plan made
except for the roadmap on how the PEARL program will be implemented. 2). the infrastructure set
up was not carefully taken into consideration. 3). teachers have not been given enough training
prior to its implementation. 4). the policies and guidelines drafted on the students use of tablets
were vague or lacking in terms of giving sanctions to erring students.

Computers Can Not Have Minds
Alan Turing, father of modern computers, created the Turing Machine in order to prove, through
the use of an imitation game, that computers can think. John Searle argued that the Turing Test is
simply just imitating, rather than thinking. Based on Searle s argument against the Turing Test, I
think that computers cannot have minds. Although Turing argues that computers can think, there
are many arguments, such as Searle s Chinese room argument, and defenses that I will present that
support Searle and his belief that computers do not understand the information they simulate and
cannot think. As stated above, the purpose of the Turing Machine is to prove that computers can
think. A Turing Machine is composed of a scanner with a tape made of paper running through it.
This paper tape is divided into squares. Each square on the tape contains a symbol, either a 0 of a
1. The machine, along with two humans, will participate in an imitation game. Human A and the
Turing Machine are hidden from view of Human B and have a conversation in order for Human B
to try to determine which of the communicators is a robot, if either one is a robot. The machine s
goal is to trick Human B into thinking it (the machine) is the human. Turing states that if the
machine is successful, then the machine does have a mind. Turing s machine has the ability to
answer any question presented to it, and Turing saw this ability as a sign of extreme intelligence.
On the other hand, Searle argued that this

of sugar in the potato cores and the potato cores gained a large amount of mass, that must mean that

The solution outside the cores must have been hypertonic and inside must have been hypotonic,
causing the water to osmose out of the cores. I knew there must have been more sucrose than
solution A because there decrease was greater, meaning that the outside solution was more
hypertonic, causing more water to need to leave the core to create an isotonic environment. I
determined that solution E contained 0.8 moles of sucrose because the cores immersed in it had the
next largest decrease in mass. This shows that the solution must have been even more concentrated
or hypertonic causing more water to leave to create an isotonic environment. I determined that
solution B contained the largest amount of sucrose with 1.0 moles. This was because the cores
immersed in it had the largest decrease, which means that the solution outside of the core must have
been the most hypertonic which means it must have had the most amount of sucrose. I knew this
because the most water left these potato cores which means that the solution outside must have

Essay On Calorimeters
This assay is much more sensitive and requires less sample preparation than widely used techniques.
Aptamers may also be nanoengineered that are able to selectively bind to PrPSc and prevent it from
inducing conformational changes, effectively neutralizing it.
Another approach to differentiating PrP isoforms is nanocalorimetry, which can also assist in
determining the function of PrPC and a more precise description of how PrPSc converts PrPC
into more PrPSc. As Lee, Lee and Koh (2012) proclaim, heat is ubiquitous in nature and as almost
all biological and chemical phenomena involve enthalpy changes, a calorimetric sensor can be

Xu et al. have managed to use the vertically integrated nanogenerator to power a nanowire pH
sensor and a nanowire UV sensor, thus demonstrating a self powered system composed entirely of
nanowires (p. 366). Zinc Oxide nanowires were shown to have a pH dependent voltage generation,
with the voltage output being directly proportionate to the pH (Xu et al, p. 371). Since the
cerebrospinal fluid is a slightly alkaline environment, the expected voltage of a CNS monitoring
nanodevice would be mid range.
Procedures and Data Analysis
To determine the function of normal prion proteins, nanocalorimetry can analyze molecular
interactions. Additionally, long term studies utilizing RNAi to knockout the PrP genein Mus
musculus will help elucidate effects throughout life span and generations. Once more is known
about the normally expressed protein, different treatments, such as RNAi and gene therapy can be
employed, if necessary.

damage to the cancer cells and achieve larger fluid flow. The spring structure is more flexible and

Similarities Between Jeffersonian And Jacksonian Eras
The main themes I noticed in this week s material were pushing the powers of the presidency and
curbing those powers, manifest destiny, changes within the political parties, and the idea of fighting
for the little guy.
Some significant continuities I saw in the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian eras were the fundamentals
of the party in power. From Jefferson s presidency throughout Jackson s, sitting presidents typically
advocated for small government and for a strict construction of the constitution (Milkis and Nelson
131). Conversely, some significant changes I saw were to the political parties themselves, both the
Federalists and the Democratic Republicans saw many changes to their parties. And lastly, Jackson
s reinventing of the use of the Veto... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Up until Jackson s presidency, a veto was only used to stop a piece of legislation if the President
viewed it as unconstitutional (Milkis and Nelson 137). However, Jackson believed that a
president should reject any bill he felt would injure the nation (Milkis and Nelson 138). This new
interpretation of the veto gave the President the power to reject legislation on personal opinion
alone. Although Congress was clearly disturbed with Jackson s veto, he maintained the people s
faith and was reelected as president the same year (Milkis and Nelson 138 139).
What I was most surprised by this week was Jackson s wording in much of the Indian Removal
Act. There were a couple places that seemed to just fall short of inciting violence. Despite knowing
the carnage that followed, I guess I expected the bill itself to be less odious. Jackson also
announced his legal inability to protect Indians from state authorities if they chose not to volunteer
their lands, clearly suggesting that any lingering natives in state territories were free to abuse
(Brinkley and Dyer 94). Obviously, the intent was nefarious, I was just shocked that there was no
attempt to mask that

  • 2. The Classic Text Of Power And Interdependence International politics is simply defined as the academic principle which deals with the practical realities of a state s interaction with another state or several other states. This essay will outline how the classic text of Power and interdependence has shaped and continues to shape how we think about international politics. Power and interdependence, published and authored by Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye in 1977, was widely regarded as an influential book within the study of international politics. The authors wanted to challenge the fundamental assumptions of traditional and structural realism which at the time, focused on military and economic capabilities to identify state behaviour. This film is what I used to compare to the Allegory of the Cave. The theme in the story is similar to Plato s theme, because Ariel is blocked off from the outside world and only when she finds a way to escape and see land, does she realize the endless possibilities that await her. • 6. A Brief Note On Robert Browning s Porphyria s Lover And... Contributory Factors to the Murders in Robert Browning s Porphyria s Lover and The Laboratory. The word love possesses such complexity and magnitude that people commonly have a hard time defining it effectively without oversimplifying. Given the true intensity of feeling, jealousy is often said to be synonymous with being in loveand the real impact love can have on a person can be unpredictable. Considering this, The Cambridge Dictionary defines a crime of passion as a crime committed because of very strong emotional feelings, especially in connection with a sexual relationship. The poems Porphyria s Lover and The Laboratory by Robert Browning, although significantly different, essentially share the theme of love and jealousy. In both poems, readers are introduced to the darker side of romance through male and female speakers so overwhelmed with emotion, they turn to murderas a means of expression. Using dramatic monologue, Browning brilliantly explores the profound effect love can have on its victims and the psychological elements leading to a crime of passion. A dramatic monologue is defined as a form of monodrama in which the speaker addresses an assumed listener or group of listeners (Kennedy 72). Although Browning mastered this genre during the Victorian era, his poems were often greeted with misunderstanding and indifference (Simpson 1275). Along with his work featuring grotesque rhymes and jaw breaking diction (Simpson 1275), he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. An Analysis Of The Boat By Alistair Macleod The theme in both the short story The Boat by Alistair Macleod and the poem Warren Pryor by Alden Nowlan have direct connections. Both works reflect the theme of obligation versus aspiration, and promote the message that it is difficult to be happy with a career chosen in order to please someone else. In each story, the protagonists feel compelled to follow a path that is not their own, but rather one chosen for them by their parents who are blind to the protagonist s true desires. The narrator in The Boat is conflicted throughout the story as he tries to reconcile his own ambition of attending university with the expectation he will continue the familytradition as a fisherman. At the beginning of the story, he describes how his family is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He works hard and long for months until his father passes away, which lifts his burden and permits him to follow his true calling by the end of the story. Were not for his father s death, the narrator would have begrudgingly continued in a career chosen by necessity, not desire. In the poem Warren Pryor, the protagonist finds himself in a similar situation, where he is obligated to choose what his parents want for him. His parents are farmers, who want nothing more than their son to have a professional job. They work incredibly hard to put Warren through school, and aspire to spare him from their hardscrabble existence on the meagre acreage that bore them down (Nowlan 4). They are elated when he finally graduates, as described in the line They blushed with pride when, at his graduation,/they watched him pick up the slender scroll (Nowlan 5 6). When Warren becomes a bank teller, they are grateful that they were successful in giving him what they believe is a better life. In the last stanza, however, it is revealed that Warren did not have a say in his career choice and bore the expectations of his parents in silence. The poem reveals that he said nothing (Nowlan 13) and describe him as having axe hewn hands upon the paper bills/aching with empty strength and throttled rage (Nowlan 15 16). Alexander Bidnyy Qatar Canadian School Christopher Columbus was born on October 30th, 1451 and died May 20th 1506. He was a Genoese navigator, explorer, and colonizer, and was born in the Republic of Genoa (present Italy). He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean for Catholic Monarchs of Spain. The westerlies occuring at that time in the Azores had failed previous attempts to sail to the west, but in the Canaries the fleet could pick up the northeast trade winds; supposedly, they could rely on the westerlies for their return. The three ships set out from San SebastiГЎn de la Gomera after nearly a month in the Canaries, on September 6th . On numerous occasions in September through early October sailors spotted various plant life floating in the sea and different types of birds in the sky, which are all signs of land nearby. Despite the evident signs of land, by October 10th the crew began to go restless. They complained that their failure to reach land, contrary winds and a shortage of supplies would keep them from returning to Spain. Columbus managed to diminish their fears, at least temporarily. On October 12th land was sighted by sailors from the Pinta but Columbus being on the NiГ±a later claimed the privilege for himself. The place of the first Caribbean landfall, called Guanahani, is hotly disputed, but San Salvador Island in the Bahamas is generally preferred to other Bahamian islands or to the Turks and Caicos Islands. • 9. Potato Latkas Research Paper The Jewish community is distinguished by a rich history, rooted in traditions that have been in place for thousands of years, many customs, and possibly the most are dietary in nature. Foods like potato latkas1, falafel2, and fried doughnuts are traditionally eaten during my favorite festival, Chanukah3, a Jewish festival that commemorates the miracle of the anointing oil that burned for eight days during the rededication process of the Temple in Jerusalem.4 Although Hanukkah5 is an eight day festival, the best night is the last when my family has the nonpareil dinner. A great effort is made in order for this glorious dinner to occur. My father usually begins the night by heating up the vegetable oil early in the evening to make all the fried foods which are the most important part. Fried foods like potato latkas are traditional in Hanukkah... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cooking the potato latkas is my favorite part. Potato latkas are creamy mash potatoes that are fried in sizzling oil resulting in the crispy goodness of a perfect potato pancake. I remember the first time we made them, they were disgusting! They were too salty and mushy, others burnt and others turned out black which was certainly not appealing to the tastebuds. The irony of the situation was that my dad is somewhat of a chef and he had never made anything unappetizing until that day and as a result of that farcical moment we have adjusted the recipe, but Hanukkah has never been the same. • 10. Essay On Health Disparity In African American Men The higher incidence of prostate cancer in African American/Black men compared to other racial /ethnic groups is a major health disparity. The statistics surrounding this health disparity are scary, with African American men having a prostate cancer mortality rate twice as high as whites and a prostate cancerincidence two thirds higher (Modlin, 2012). The health disparity of African American men s incidence of prostate canceris a huge problem from a public health perspective because it makes African American men less productive, there are higher costs in the healthcare field than would be if the gap didn t exist, and a loss of sense of control from African American men because of financial concerns/aftermath of treatment. One behavioral influence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A biological influence on this health disparity is a genetic predisposition seen in African American men. Several studies have shown a chromosome that is more common in African American men that increases the risk of prostate cancer. The chromosome is 8q24 variants, which is the most commonly seen, as well as, BCL2 and EphB2 linking to a higher incidence of prostate cancer (Modlin, 2012). The genetic predisposition has also been proven to cause prostate cancer to be a more aggressive disease in African Americans, likely leading to the higher mortality rates. The behavioral influence of being less likely to get screened and the biological influence of a genetic predisposition interact to influence the health disparity. There is no way of changing the genetic predisposition so that already puts African American men in a place for higher incidence. Being they already have that higher incidence due to genetics, adding into the equation African Americans being less likely to be screened only makes the health disparity ... Then the tentacles bring the meal to the little bubble like head for the organism that make up the Man of War to feast upon. Using caution around the Man of Wars. Of course after the sightings of the invertebrates, New Jersey officials of the Poison Information and Education System released a press release (http://www.njpies.org/PDFs/News and Events /Press Releases/2015/Portuguese man of war (July 2015).pdf) on the 1st of July warning people at the beach to stay away from them. Meaning In Art The meaning of a unadorned sculpture that one passes by on a routine bases, can end up having a much more monumental and deep meaning than what an individual may have discerned. A strong representation of many different feelings is given off to the buildings, its surroundings, and the students and faculty that walk among it. Each physical characteristic comes together to design the horse and can be analyzed to have meanings like recognition, nobility, and guidance. Outside Trimpe Hall on Lewis and Clark Community College campus sits a majestic, light brown, wood colored figure. It is placed directly on the ground, along the side of a little stone pathway. Little patches of grass are peeking up through the mulch. The shape of the statue resembles that of a horse. Explain why one theory replaces another, and who, or what, determines whether an existing theory survives. A theory is primarily meant to explain or predict an event, behaviour or outcome. Proponents of a theory look for evidence to support the theory. This evidence should be independently observed and consistent after repeated observations. However, they are rarely complete models and often outcomes cannot be predicted. Reintroduction of a theory suggests that new evidence in support of the theory has been reported. 3. Should a theory be discarded if it does not specify the means of achieving a stated objective? Explain your answer. The theory itself doesn t have to specify the means of achieving a stated objective; however, it has to provide a sound basis for explaining, defining and predicting behaviour. The application of the theory can have many elements and it is in the interpretation of what will induce the predicted effects in the economy predicted by the theory which will result in predicted or other stated outcomes. Finance stakeholders (that is, shareholders, creditors and other financial lenders) are the providers of these finances. Their interests and beliefs in the activities of the companies are required to make them invest. A recent share investments survey in Lagos and Abuja, involving 100 respondents covering investors and prospective investors (60 and 40 respondents respectively), revealed that 70 percent of the investors place heavy reliance on the integrity of a company s auditor before investing in that company. 80 percent of the prospective investors chose never to advance money of whatever form to any company because they have lost confidence in audit firms. This, they hinged on the fact that companies, despite their stunning performance reports attested to by audit firms, still go bankrupt. Using questionnaires and interviews, we gathered relevant data from investors, prospective investors, audit firms and some financial institutions (banks) for this study. We analysed these data using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis tools. It was discovered that there is a very strong link between audit and finance stakeholders ... Coca Cola wanted to continue its international expansion because it believed that the U.S. market would eventually reach maturity, and that growth prospects were better overseas. What strategy did Coca Cola start to pursue in 2000? What were the benefits of this strategy to Coca Cola? What were the drawbacks? ANSWER 2: In the 1980s, Coca Cola changed its strategy from a localization approach where individual country units essentially ran their own operations, to a more centralized approach where key management and marketing activities took place at the company headquarters in Atlanta. The company extended this strategy to include foreign bottlers. By taking equity stakes in the bottlers, Coca Cola was able to exert greater control over them. Coca Cola made the shift to the global standardization strategy because it believed that by doing so, the company could gain significant economies of scale. However, by 2000, the company was ready to change its strategy once again. • 17. The Use Of Deceptation In Shakespeare s Hamlet By William... Throughout history, Shakespeare s works have been able to captivate and enchant audiences of all backgrounds. His words have an undeniable ability to sway a crowd s emotions and truly affect them. His plays are timeless pieces of art considered the foundations of English literature. Shakespeare s most dramatic and infamous tragedy, Hamlet, has earned its place as a cornerstone. In the play, Shakespeare poetically writes speeches that reveal the true colours of the characters, whether good or devious. The main antagonist, Claudius, exposes his treachery to the audience, through his speech to his wife Gertrude. Those living during Shakespeare s times, the Elizabethans, were the first to witness Claudius deception and were able to fully appreciate the play. Claudius conversation with Gertrude in Act 4, Scene 5 of Hamlet effectively targets the Elizabethan audience through the clever use of literary tools and the connections to aspects of Elizabethan society. Hamlet is a prime example of Shakespeare s brilliant literary wit that was able to target the Elizabethan audience and Claudius speech is no exception. There was no such thing as special effects in the Elizabethan Era, so metaphors helped to create a picture for the audience in Claudius speech. He explains Ophelia s distress by exclaiming, When sorrows come, they come not single spies/But in battalions (4.5.52 53). • 46. Computers Can Not Have Minds Alan Turing, father of modern computers, created the Turing Machine in order to prove, through the use of an imitation game, that computers can think. John Searle argued that the Turing Test is simply just imitating, rather than thinking. Based on Searle s argument against the Turing Test, I think that computers cannot have minds. Although Turing argues that computers can think, there are many arguments, such as Searle s Chinese room argument, and defenses that I will present that support Searle and his belief that computers do not understand the information they simulate and cannot think. As stated above, the purpose of the Turing Machine is to prove that computers can think. A Turing Machine is composed of a scanner with a tape made of paper running through it. This paper tape is divided into squares. Each square on the tape contains a symbol, either a 0 of a 1. The machine, along with two humans, will participate in an imitation game. Human A and the Turing Machine are hidden from view of Human B and have a conversation in order for Human B to try to determine which of the communicators is a robot, if either one is a robot. The machine s goal is to trick Human B into thinking it (the machine) is the human. Turing states that if the machine is successful, then the machine does have a mind. This was because the cores immersed in it had the largest decrease, which means that the solution outside of the core must have been the most hypertonic which means it must have had the most amount of sucrose. I knew this because the most water left these potato cores which means that the solution outside must have been the most hypertonic and needing the most water to make it isotonic to the inside of the cores which contain a lot of ... • 48. Essay On Calorimeters This assay is much more sensitive and requires less sample preparation than widely used techniques. Aptamers may also be nanoengineered that are able to selectively bind to PrPSc and prevent it from inducing conformational changes, effectively neutralizing it. Another approach to differentiating PrP isoforms is nanocalorimetry, which can also assist in determining the function of PrPC and a more precise description of how PrPSc converts PrPC into more PrPSc. As Lee, Lee and Koh (2012) proclaim, heat is ubiquitous in nature and as almost all biological and chemical phenomena involve enthalpy changes, a calorimetric sensor can be used for virtually any type of interaction (p. 17). Calorimeters at the micro and nano scale are generally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Xu et al. have managed to use the vertically integrated nanogenerator to power a nanowire pH sensor and a nanowire UV sensor, thus demonstrating a self powered system composed entirely of nanowires (p. 366). Zinc Oxide nanowires were shown to have a pH dependent voltage generation, with the voltage output being directly proportionate to the pH (Xu et al, p. 371). Since the cerebrospinal fluid is a slightly alkaline environment, the expected voltage of a CNS monitoring nanodevice would be mid range. Procedures and Data Analysis To determine the function of normal prion proteins, nanocalorimetry can analyze molecular interactions. Additionally, long term studies utilizing RNAi to knockout the PrP genein Mus musculus will help elucidate effects throughout life span and generations. Once more is known about the normally expressed protein, different treatments, such as RNAi and gene therapy can be employed, if necessary. Zheng s lab is working on a filter to capture metastasizing cancer cells (Zheng, p. 25). While PrPC are sessile, PrPSc can migrate through the CSF and other bodily fluids, therefore a similar nanofilter device could be used to capture them. Zheng has found that microsprings do less damage to the cancer cells and achieve larger fluid flow. The spring structure is more flexible and so less pressure is required to move... through the filter (Zheng, p. 26). • 49. Similarities Between Jeffersonian And Jacksonian Eras The main themes I noticed in this week s material were pushing the powers of the presidency and curbing those powers, manifest destiny, changes within the political parties, and the idea of fighting for the little guy. Some significant continuities I saw in the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian eras were the fundamentals of the party in power. From Jefferson s presidency throughout Jackson s, sitting presidents typically advocated for small government and for a strict construction of the constitution (Milkis and Nelson 131). Conversely, some significant changes I saw were to the political parties themselves, both the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans saw many changes to their parties. And lastly, Jackson s reinventing of the use of the Veto... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Up until Jackson s presidency, a veto was only used to stop a piece of legislation if the President viewed it as unconstitutional (Milkis and Nelson 137). However, Jackson believed that a president should reject any bill he felt would injure the nation (Milkis and Nelson 138). This new interpretation of the veto gave the President the power to reject legislation on personal opinion alone. Although Congress was clearly disturbed with Jackson s veto, he maintained the people s faith and was reelected as president the same year (Milkis and Nelson 138 139). What I was most surprised by this week was Jackson s wording in much of the Indian Removal Act. There were a couple places that seemed to just fall short of inciting violence. Despite knowing the carnage that followed, I guess I expected the bill itself to be less odious. Jackson also announced his legal inability to protect Indians from state authorities if they chose not to volunteer their lands, clearly suggesting that any lingering natives in state territories were free to abuse (Brinkley and Dyer 94). Obviously, the intent was nefarious, I was just shocked that there was no attempt to mask that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
