Gender Identity Is The Assumption Of There Being Binary...
Binary Logic: Another issue with research pertaining to sexual identity is the assumption of there
being binary categories, such as gay/straight, male/female, etc. Research in this area is generally
dichotomized (e.g. male/female, gay/straight), which can foster rigid identity assumptions, foster
homogeneous understanding of research particiapnts and results, foster a divide between normal
and deviant behavior, as well as mask inherent variation in different groups and populations
(Johnson Repta, 2012). Bringing greater awareness to the complexity of sexual and gender identity
could have transformative effects on how research is conducted. Some scholars in the social work
field have begun to acknowledge and recognize the increasing evidence that sexual and gender
identity are not binary categories, as well that categories might not even be an accurate way of
understanding these phenomena (Burdge, 2007; Roche Gringeri, 2010). While an understanding
that the binary model is flawed has gained some traction in social work research, the majority of
researchers continue to ignore and disregard this possibility, consequently reinforcing this erroneous
dichotomous paradigm (Rassi, 2011). It has also been noted that critiques from postmodern,
poststructural, and queer theory perspectives, as well as from individuals or groups (e.g.
transgender, bisexual, intersex) who do not fit neatly into binary categories continue to remain
essentially absent within social work

The Sacred Language of Toni Morrison Essay
The Sacred Language of Toni Morrison
Toni Morrison makes a good point when, in her acceptance speech upon receiving the Nobel
Prize in Literature, she says, Narrative . . . is . . . one of the principal ways in which we absorb
knowledge (7). The words we use and the way in which we use them is how we, as humans,
communicate to each other our thoughts, feelings, and actions and therefore our knowledge of the
world and its peoples. Knowledge is power. In this way, our language, too, is powerful.
In her acceptance speech, Morrison tries to communicate the idea that we must be careful with how
we use our words. She analogizes the use of language to the life of a metaphoric bird in a tale of a
wise, old, blind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout her speech, Toni Morrison works towards defining and supporting this thesis of
responsibility. It is our responsibility, as users of words, to make language thrive. Elizabeth Fox
Genovese has a similar goal, but takes a different approach in her essay The Claims of a Common
Culture: Gender, Race, Class and the Canon. She speaks on the use and composition of the canon
taught in humanities classes. Her idea is that the canon of today is much too one sided and does
not include the influence of the several different cultures, peoples, and ideas that make up our
society. She says that with respect to representativeness, the canon fails woefully. It represent[s] a
small, sometimes minute, portion of the elite, which itself constitute[s] a statistical minority of the
population (Fox Genovese 19). In this abstract way, Fox Genovese is reiterating Morrison s words
that what we say, and how we say it (or teach it), or what we fail to say (as in the canon taught
today) is monumentally influencing and impactful upon others.
If we are not aware of the words that come out of our mouths due to lack of thought or attention,
we all suffer and we are all at fault: When language dies, out of carelessness, disuse, indifference,
and absence of esteem, or killed by fiat, . . . all users and makers are accountable for its demise
(Morrison 14 15). The standards of society are changing and with them the

Star Life Cycle Essay
The first stage in the life cycle of a star is the Nebula. A Nebula is a swirling sea of dust and gas
but, it is not a star yet. Over time, the dust and gas will collect into a ball that sweeps through the
Nebula. The ball of gas and dust then begins to grow.
The Nebula becomes a Protostar, the second stage of a star s life cycle, once the ball of gas and
dust starts to shrink because of it s own mass and gravity. The Protostar is still not a star yet. At
this stage it can be up to 100x larger than our Sun! The Protostar will keep shrinking and start to
heat up, until it becomes roughly the size of our Sun.
The Protostar becomes an Infrared once it reaches this size of our Sun. The Infrared is still not a
star yet, but it is very close! At ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the fourth stage of a star s life cycle. The Star diameter will be about 700,000 km. An
average star will live for about 10 billion years in this stage. Our Sun is only about 5 billion years
old. After the Infrared becomes a Star, it will continue to burn changing more of its Hydrogen into
Helium. Eventually the Hydrogen begins to run out, until the Star becomes a Red Giant.
The Red Giant is stage five of a star s life cycle and this fiery ball of nuclear fusion is about
50,000,000 km in diameter! The inner core of the Red Giant begins to shrink, and get hotter.
Then, the outer layers begin to separate from the inner layers and the Red Giant becomes larger in
size. Over time it could completely lose it s outer layer and start to shrink again.
The second to last stage could result in the Red Giant shrinking until it becomes a White Dwarf or
the Red Giant continuing to shrink until it explodes. If the outcome is a White Dwarf, it would
create a small, hot, hard to see star that is smaller than the Earth. If the outcome is an explosion, it
would result in the remnants of the core and a Nova or Supernova, which is a mass spitting off
dust and gases that would start the entire star life cycle over

Political And Political Politics Of The Twentieth Century
What is the history of political cartooning?
The history of political cartooning is used for social and political messages which goes back to the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in America with Benjamin Franklin s Join or Die , which
depicts a snake whose severed parts represent the colonies and unless put together are sure to perish.
Since Benjamin Franklin started political cartooning back in the eighteenth century, people have
started using their artistic skills to attack, argue and add their opinions on the most important
political issues of the day. Political cartoons were often posted in the newspapers, posted on walls
or passed from person to person. By the end of the nineteenth century, they were an important part

Although there were four New England colonies, Benjamin Franklin gathered into one category to
stress the need for the colonial unity. At the time of the cartoonbeing made, the colonists firmly
debated making west of the Appalachian Mountains bigger and fighting the French and the Indians,
which were their allies.
As publisher and printer, Benjamin Franklin drafted several cartoons that persuaded colonists to
rebel against England. Join or Die appeared alongside Benjamin Franklin s editorial about the
disunited state of the colonies and that means to unite or to be attacked by French and Indian allies.
Ahead of time, Benjamin Franklin knew that in order to convince the colonists, he first had to
convince the public. Straight forward and powerful images, followed by a clear and expressive
prose has the power to create conversation among the populations. With drawing the cartoon,
Benjamin Franklin voiced a strong opinion in a keen, potent and sophisticated way. The second
American cartoonist was not as famous as Benjamin Franklin was in American history, his name
was Paul Revere. Paul Revere was a silversmith and an engraver who created incendiary cartoons
disguised as prints of news events. By the time of Abraham Lincoln s presidency, more than dozens
of cartoons had appeared every year in magazines, newspapers, penny prints, posters, lithographs
and broadsides.

Political Changes In Akhenaten
Along with his striking religious changes, Akhenaten also led a political revolution, namely in the
perception of the pharaoh. One of the most visible changes in Akhenaten s reign was a drastic
change in art. Public perception of the pharaoh was essential to political power, but Akhenaten s
portraits do not portray the pharaoh in the larger than life style associated with other New Kingdom
rulers. Firstly, Akhenatenwas feminine in appearance, and is shown affectionately playing with his
children and Nefertiti. Amarna art is realistic and Akhenaten chose to portray a reality no other
pharaoh had been willing to show. Nicholas Reeves explains these changes: In Akhenaten s new

Religious life was tied to social life in every aspect, and the Egyptian year was based around
religious festivals. These festivals stopped under Atenism, and the people of Egypt were
introduced to a new tradition: the procession of Akhenaten and Nefertiti mirroring the sun
moving across the sky. However, this new tradition was not capable of adequately replacing the
traditions of the past: The festivals of the past which had divided the year and provided the stops
and starts which powered day to day living were removed; and they do not seem to have been
replaced despite the fact, as Barry Kemp has observed that worship of the sun provides a ready
made set of calendrical feasts [in the form of] the solstices and equinoxes. The progress of the
king along the Royal Road, however splendidly orchestrated, offered but a poor substitute.
Egyptians lived their lives based around the various festivals of their gods, and in removing these
festivals, Akhenaten removed a piece of culture he could not replace. Maat, the Egyptian concept
of order controlled by the pharaoh meant that every single part of daily life was touched by the
introduction of the new religion. Thebes, the cultural center of Egypt, was abandoned by the
pharaoh, and he moved life to Akhenaten. For Egyptians outside of the city, what they experienced
of Atenism was a loss of traditions they had followed for generations, and these changes did not
bode well for a long lasting

Truth Is Culturally Relative
The quality of being true is related to something clear, without any uncertainty. This is perfectly
summarized by the Greek word for truth is бјЂО»О®ОёОµО№О± (alГ©theia), from the privative
prefix бјЂ (a ), meaning not , and О»О®ОёОµ ( lethe), oblivion , which, as Martin Heidegger
(2001) explained by analysing its etymology, refers to the state of not being hidden . Truthis a cross
issue, that embraces everything related to humans, from the most ordinary aspect of daily life, to
the most deep religious thought. The need to find what is true is part of the human nature, but as
the German philosopher Edmund Husserl (1965) stated, that same nature, which gave us the need
of knowledge, at the same time bound us to subjectivity, limiting our understanding to judgement
and interpretation, thus, truth can only be obtained gradually, through a never ending task. This
process of understanding finds its ancient roots in Greece, in the VII VI century B.C., when
philosophy was born and the slow loss of universal certainties has started. The very first interest of
philosophers was that to define the concept of Being, a wide notion that embraces objective and
subjective features of reality. Throughout the philosophy of truth, objectivism and subjectivism lead
to the development of the two major approaches to reality, Relativism and Universalism. One of the
first interpretation of truth and knowledge was given by the sophists, and it finds its primary
source in Protagoras fragment of all

The Devil s Arithmetic Analysis
Contradicting the glowing reviews of this novel, there are many things that can be improved about
The Devil s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. The point of view, as it came from a twelve year old,
withheld some important points and perspectives. Although it gave an opportunity for some serious
character development, certain scenes were trivialized, such as the dinner. Hannah described her
discomfort for most of the time instead of focusing on the importance and meaning of certain
moments. Because of this, the reader doesn t have an opportunity to learn more about modern
Jewish tradition, something that seems almost obvious to have in this type of book. Although the
concept of time travel and her disappearing memories were very interesting, one doesn t

Hiking Narrative
To my surprise, Katelyn decided that hiking was a great idea, and I guess I should have figured
as much from the get go that a witch would like to be close to Mother Nature. Because
everything I had heard about Wiccans up to that point, was that they based a good chunk of
their religion on the earth and being one with nature. But for some reason I had given myself the
impression that Katelyn wasn t the sort of girl who d liked to get down and dirty in the woods. I
guess it was her whole Goth get up and all the needless makeup she wore. Before leaving the house

North And South Essay
North and South As the north and south began to separate after the Era of Good Feelings (1815
1825), the Second American Party System was established. This system consisted of two distinct
parties, the Democrats and their opponents, who were known as Whigs for the most part. The goal
of these two parties was to create a common thought process between the north and the south. Three
of the issues prominent in their campaigns to gather votes in these two regions were government,
economy, and slavery. Using these topics as foundations, the members of both parties of the Second
American Party System aimed establish harmony between the north and south. Slavery played a

But when a group of radical evangelicals called for immediate abolition of slavery, they made the
national government face the issue of slavery, an issue it had been trying very hard to side step. In
response, the Democrats prevented any abolitionist mail from reaching the South. Sometimes, they
would not even respond to anti slavery petitions that were sent to them. At this moment, former
President Adams (an opponent to President Andrew Jackson) chose to openly oppose slavery. But
already, most southerners saw what the Democrats wanted them to see: that their surest guarantee
of safety within the Union was a disciplined Democratic Party that avoided sectional arguments.
The Democrats said that a party that united northern and southern rights into a states rights, limited
government majority could guarantee states rights within the Union. This statement answered the
questions that arose during the Missouri debates: how do you protect the slave holding South
within the federal Union. Martin Van Burenbelieved the alternative to this agenda, the isolation of
the slaveholding south, would lead to moral danger of the republic. Though said to be racists the
Democrats handled the slave situation in a way that made the south understand their plan. Views on
economy were a big difference between the Jacksonian Democrats and their opponents in relation to
the north and south. President Jackson hated the bank and believed it was

The World And A Grand Symbol Of Papal Authority Essay
During the Late Renaissance period, the largest church in the world and a grand symbol of
papal authority was built within the territory of the Vatican City. Principally designed by famous
architects, such as Michelangelo, Donato Bramante, Carlo Maderno and Gian Bernini Lorenzo,
St Peter s Basilica built between 1506 to 1626 is one of the greatest Renaissance architectures
and is regarded as the greatest of all churches of Christendom . Believed to be the site of Saint
Peter s tomb, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and considered to be the first pope, the ground
in which the basilica stands is one of the holiest places in the world. Evidence state that the tomb
of Saint Peter is located directly beneath the altar of the Basilica. Due to being such a holy place,
the Basilica contains many tombs of popes and famous religious sculptures, such as the Pieta of
Michelangelo. Admired for its Renaissance architecture, with a fusion with Baroque architecture
in the later years of building, the Basilica of St. Peter also holds great meaning; thus in order to
emphasize its importance, it took several years to design and completely build the dome (and the
Basilica itself). Consequently, the greatest architects and artists were involved . The Roman public
hall, known as a basilica, is usually a rectangular building with side aisles behind the rows of
columns which support the main walls. The focus of attention is at the end opposite the entrance,
where a raised platform is

Human Social Animal
1333 words essay on Man is a social animal
Bharat Kumar
Traditionally, there have been two answers to the problem of the relationship between the
individual and his society. One is the social contract theory and the other is the organic theory,
which we have already discussed in detail.
According to the social contract theory, society is the result of an agreement or contract entered
into by men who originally lived in a pre social state. Thus society is made by man and he is more
real than his creation. On the other hand, according to the organic theory, society is an organic. Just
as the parts of an animal body are functionally related and none can exist isolated from the rest,
similarly, the members of society are functionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No one can become a human being unless he lives with society. Apart from fulfilling the basic
needs of a man, the human society satisfies his desires, dreams and aspirations by the solid co
operation of his fellow beings. In society, man can easily fulfill his various needs such as
education, protection, nature, comfort, opportunity, equipment and so on. The self preservation
desired by every human being, is a need which society alone fulfills. Therefore, it is not due to his
nature alone but also due to his necessities, man lives in society and regarded as a social animal.
3. Society determines human personality
Lastly, man lives in society for his mental, psychological and intellectual development. Society both
liberates and limits our potentialities as individual and moulds our attitudes, beliefs, morals and
ideals. It preserves the culture, customs, folkways, mores, norms, values etc. and transmits it to
succeeding generations. One of the important functions of society is to preserve the social heritage,
which is intimately related to human beings. The social heritage helps his personality to develop in
society. It is no doubt that the personality of an individual cannot develop at all in the absence of
social heritage. Thus, society not only moulds and directs human personality but also determines
the personality of the individuals. The personality, which is the total quality of individual s

Mongol Essay
When you first hear the word Mongol, the immediate image that comes to mind is that of a
fearsome and ruthless warrior. This reputation helped the Mongols conquer and rule the largest
empire in history which spanned from China to Europe. While the rise of the Mongols is largely
attributed to the emergence of their famed leader, Genghis Khan, the Mongol Empire itself would
have lasting effects on China, Korea, and Japan even after his death. The Mongols would occupy
Koryo Korea, defeat the Southern Song Dynasty to occupy China, and attempt to invade and

The Mongols launched their fleet of 1,000 ships and landed in Hakata Bay in 1274 in what
would be their first of two attempts to invade Japan. This would be known as the Battle of Bun
ei or as the First Battle of Hakata Bay . The Mongols would conquer the settlements on the
islands of Tsushima and Iki while on route to Hakata Bay. However after landing at Hakata Bay
the Mongols were pushed back by the Samurai as they were prepared and expected the invasion.
Historians theorize that the Japanese were forewarned by Koryo Korea. The reasons as to why
Koryo Korea would give the Japanese this knowledge is because they were tired of being under
the Mongol rule and because Japan had shown good will to Koryo Korea by suppressing
Japanese Piracy along the coastline of Korea. The advanced warning allowed for Japan to gauge
the incoming Mongol forces as they ravaged the islands of Tsushima and Iki. The initial landing
success of the Mongols can be attributed to their superior weapons, tactics, and fighting
experience. However, as time wore on the numbers began to favor the Japanese and they were
able to repel the Mongols back towards their ships. As a severe storm approached Hakata Bay
the Mongols decided to board their ships once again to avoid being isolated on Japanese soil. The
severe storm system was a typhoon and by the morning a large portion of the ships and one

Benefits Of Offshore Oil Drilling
Offshore oil drilling is a big contribution to obtaining oil for the U.S., but it is also a big
controversy to continue offshore drilling or to stop the drilling. most of the world s energy
comes from the use of oil, even though there are other resources to use oil is the most commonly
used, But there is a shortage in oil especially in the U.S. so they suggest drilling for oil in the
ocean to reach unexplored oil wells. There are benefits in offshore oil drilling such as jobs,
domestic fuel, and environmental benefits. Those that argue the U.S. should expand the
offshore oil drilling believe that the benefits drilling brings will help the U.S. out of its foreign
oil dependency. Although the side effects are have big impacts just like the benefits. The side
effects include environmental risks, oil dependency, and whether or not there is enough oil.
Offshore oil drilling is a subject not many know about, there is a lot of research that still needs
to be done and a lot of research that still does not give positive conclusions. All in all I believe
Energy Efficiency is the best solution to offshore drilling an example would be using electric
cars, using solar, and wind power for electricity, and changing how we obtain energy altogether.
One of America s priorities is creating more jobs for everyone and offshore oil drilling does create
jobs like specialized technicians, laborers, cooks, doctors, scientists and a number of other
specialized workers as well as secondary jobs

Kinnell And Heaney
The poems Blackberry picking by Seamus Heaney, and Blackberry Eating by Galway Kinnell are
both excellent depictions of the essence of the blackberries. Something beautiful can be said of
poems that were written about blackberries. The descriptive words poets use, can make a simple
fruit into something truly amazing. These poems all compare blackberries, making them seem like
more than they are. These two poems are dedicated to different seasons of blackberry picking,
describe the fruititself to be something different, and are written with different writing styles.
The first lines of both poems begin with a time. Blackberry picking takes place in late August.
Heaney described the weather needed for that time of year to find the perfect blackberries. He
told the reader, given heavy rain and sun for a full week, the blackberries would ripen. This is
very similar to what Kinnell is saying with the first lines of his poem, Blackberry Eating . His
poem begins, in late September among the fat, overripe, icy, black blackberries. The timing in both
poems is extremely similar in that the blackberries are just becoming ripe in late August, and over
the next month, grow to the perfect, overripe state. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Is Nurturing Nature Necessary Or Does It Have Negative...
Is nurturing nature necessary or does it have negative consequences? In 1914, the last passenger
pigeon, a bird that was catalogued at one time by famous ornithologist John James Audubon
(who is still remembered through the Audubon guide series), died. There are and never will be
any more. As a species, the Passenger Pigeon was hunted to extinction because they were noisy,
messy, and disruptive. They would fly in huge (like blocking out the sun type of huge) flocks,
and one could imagine the towns that were flown over. In Charles Roth s book, Then There
Were None, he details how the extinction of an entire species was possible: the trees and forests
(the bird s natural habitat) were destroyed at nesting sites, which the passenger pigeon was very

The goal is every business is to generate profits for its shareholders and to operate for the
foreseeable future. For ABC Complete Kitchens, Inc., manufacturing has been the industry of
choice. With the building and upcoming opening of the new plant, it is expected that a boost in
productivity and profitability will follow. To be able to adequately measure how much the new
plant will contribute to the overall productivity and profitability of the company, certain factors
need to be taken into consideration. Because the company is solely involved in manufacturing, a
plant productivity analysis is one of the ways to quantify the exact level of contribution of the new
plant.

The Final Book Of The Divine Comedy By Dante Alighieri
Introduction
Paradise is the third and final book in the Divine Comedy series. It s taken me awhile to get
through them, but I ve managed to read all three books and write reviews for each of them. One
thing to keep in mind about this review is that the Questions Asked and Lessons Learned sections
might contain spoilers. If you don t want to have the book spoiled, go ahead and skip over them to
the Recommendation section.
History of Author
Dante Alighieri. Dante was the original writer of Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. He was a well
known and well respected poet in the middle ages. His Divine Comedy (The three books I listed
above) is considered by many to be the best writing in the Italian language and is considered a
masterpiece of world literature. You could ask almost anyone who Dante was and they will
likely know who he is and be able to name The Divine Comedy as one of his works. He s so well
known in Italy that they refer to him as the father of the Italian language. He defended the
vernacular and would write in the Tuscan dialect for some of his works (The New Life, for
example). Because of this, many other writers of the time and in the future would follow the
precedent Dante set. His influence has been carried down from generation to generation. Proof of
this is found in his style of the interlocking three line rhyme scheme.
Mark Musa. Musa was the translator and note taker for of his own published version of Dante s
Divine Comedy. This was incredibly helpful,

How To Build An Autocracy
Growing up in a community where the education succeeds, and learning is rich, it is easy to see
why America as a whole is ignorant to facts and education that is essential to fill our civil duties
of voting. The underlying facts of what s to come is hidden because of rhetoric and lying to the
public, and the public is blind to these facts because of their lack of education. In America, the lack
of quality education and knowledge of extremely important information will lead to the destruction
of our country and to our civic society.
Ever since 1960 the culture of American Education has gone down significantly. In efforts to make
things easier for readers, authors are trying to trim their materials so it is basically easier for the

In the article Ignorance Does not Lead to Education Bliss, published in The Atlantic, written by
Jonathan R. Cole states,
When this kind of ignorance reaches the level of presidential aspirants, it must give Americans
pause. Where does the ignorance originate? Why has it become so pervasive in the United States
today? Can the U.S. have meaningful elections if its citizens have a paucity of civic knowledge
and history that might allow them to make informed decisions? A significant part of the answer
lies, I believe, in the failures of the American education system .
What Cole is arguing is that why should we in the United States hold elections if we seriously
have no idea what we are talking about. We are making decisions without ever really knowing
what we are talking about or what people are even saying. We have a paucity of knowledge for
the important things that we need to know like civic knowledge and the history of our country
and of the world, which are essential topics. Our education system is failing us, and if we don t fix
it, our country will continue to fall, until we are at a point where we can t come back from it
anymore. Education is something that needs to urgently so that our country can come back on

The Battle Of Santa Rosa Island
After several months of battles between the north and the south in several states, including
North Carolina, Virginia, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee, the war reached Florida in 1861.
The first battle to reach Florida occurred when there was a standoff at Fort Pickens. When
Florida seceded from the Union, there were Union soldiers stationed at Fort Pickens that were
asked to surrender. A force of almost 1,000 volunteer soldiers landed on Santa Rosa Island with
the intent of raiding the outlying defenses and camps near Fort Pickens. General Richard H.
Anderson led these soldiers. Mainly the Sixth New York Infantry Regiment defended the forts
and camps. Soon after the Confederates burned and ransacked the Union camp, reinforcements
were sent from Fort Pickens to assist the confused Union soldiers. The Confederates had 18
killed, 39 wounded, and 30 imprisoned soldiers, while the Union had 14 killed, 29 wounded, and
20 imprisoned. By March 1862, the Confederates completely withdrew from the area. This battle
became known as the Battle of Santa Rosa Island because the union troops landed on Santa Rosa
Island, four miles east of Fort Pickens. Most of the civil war took place in the states of Virginia
and Tennessee but two major battles of and several smaller altercations took place in the state of
Florida. On February 20, 1864 the largest civil war battle in Florida took place near Lake City.
This battle occurred a year after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and it was

Essay on With the Old Breed Book Report
With The Old Breed begins with the start of the author s military career. Eugene Sledge was a
freshman at Marion Military institute, his family pushing for him to eventually become an officer

before the war was over was strong enough to make him end his college career and begin anew in

It is here that he learns the true chaos, confusion, and terror of war. His experiences from this
point on in the book are something that members of any branch of service can learn from when
seeking knowledge on what war is like, especially during the pacific campaign. Sledge and his
company spends three days on Peleliu before they are relieved and sent to another island, but
during these three days he witnesses the first aspects of war. On one occasion he witnessed a
Marine kill another Marine at night after the Japanese broke through their lines. I think that this is
something that unfortunately happens more often than it should on the battlefield, both in the past
and modern day. Situations like that can only be avoided through a more constant focus on the
situation and situational awareness. Eugene Sledge is greatly disturbed by this event and it causes
him to realize the waste and cruelty of war. Although perceived by the author as a terrible thing,
the Pacific Campaign showed Eugene Sledge several things a normal man usually wouldn t notice.
Throughout the book marines are seen on litter duty; volunteering to run into the midst battle with
a stretcher to carry out dead or wounded Marines. This mindset of never leaving someone behind

Cases of Multiple Providers of Agricultural Extension...
1.2 Agricultural Extension System: the Bangladesh case In Bangladesh a multitude of agencies
from private and public origin offer extension support to the farmers (ASIRP, 2006). Although
recent years witness a noticeable change in agricultural extension service providers, the public
institutions still remain the dominant. The new entrants to the field include non governmental
organizations (NGOs), the private sector agribusiness enterprises and grass root institutions eg. Self
Help and micro credit Groups involving farming communities (WB, 2005).
DAE is the key department under the Ministry of Agriculture which provides extension support to
crop sector farmers. This organization has country wide coverage and operational staff. Other
public organizations involved in providing extension service in crop sectors are Agricultural
Information Service (AIS), Department of Agriculture Marketing (DAM), Bangladesh Agriculture
Development Corporation (BADC), Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bangladesh Rural
Development Board (BRDB), Cotton Development Board (CDB), Tea Board (TB), Department of
Youth Development (DYD), Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) etc. Except DAE
other public extension organizations have their own way of offering extension services.
NGOs started to provide their own extension services in the late 1970s to disseminate knowledge
among their targeted clients (Haque, 2010). More than 100 local, national, and international NGOs

Natural Selection Is The Outcome Of Inheritance, Variance,...
Natural selection is the outcome of inheritance, variance, and differential reproduction and can
operate at many if not all levels of the taxonomic hierarchy (Bergstrom Dugatkin, 2012). If the level
meets the requirements of natural selection, it may be acted upon. Natural selection can vary in the
force of selection between each level in the hierarchy and depends highly on the amount of units
within the level. The higher the taxonomic level the less units, less variation and multiplication that
is found. The levels in which natural selectionoperates and the strength of its force will be
discussed moving down the hierarchy of genes, cells, individuals, populations composed of closely
related kin, and groups of distantly related... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most diploid species maintain a one to one sex ratio because it is evolutionarily stable (Fisher,
1930). However, when population ratios do not fit the Fisherian sex ratio of one to one,
selection will favor the gene/allele that is in limited supply until their frequency is greater or
equal to the competing gene (Fisher, 1930). Therefore, selection works at the level of the gene
in maintaining evolutionarily stable Fisherian sex ratios. Not only does natural selection operate
at the level of the gene, it has also been found to operate at the level of the cell. Since different
cell types within an individual have different rates of division, the morphology of organisms
results from selection at the level of the cell (Lewontin, 1970). Natural selection is a strong force
at the cellular level due to high levels of variation and therefore multiplication, and heredity which
favors the cell lineages that are better adapted to leaving behind descendent cells (Smith, 1987).
An example of natural selection operating at the level of the cell is shown by clonal selection
theory of immunity where normal tissue repair and neoplastic growth are results of natural
selection at the cellular level (Lewonith, 1970). Normal tissue repair occurs as a response to
destruction of tissue, where certain cell types reproduce faster than normal in order to repair the
tissue, then returns to a normal rate after repair (Lewonith, 1970).

Summary Of The Book Walmart Wars
Morality is defined by the fine line found between actions and behavior. In the book WalMart

Pipelines Are Making Headlines Lately For All The Wrong...
Pipelines are making headlines lately for all the wrong reasons. It is important to address why
they are perceived to be harmful, if they actually are, and how they can be improved for the
future, or if they should be eliminated. The use of pipelines date back as far as 500BC in China.
In those times, the pipelines were made of bamboo, used to separate the salt from the sea water.
The United States did not adopt these until much later. Edwin L. Drake drilled his first
commercial oil well in the United States near the city Titusville in Pennsylvania; the oil which
they nicknamed rock oil was then used as a less expensive alternative to whale oil. It was used
as lubricant and as fuel for lamps. It was not long after this that it was realized they would need a
more cost effective way of transporting the oil from place to place. At the time, Teamsters were
using horses and wagons to get the oil to the markets; one barrel going five miles costed more than
the entire rail charged to go to New York City. For that reason, the pipeline was created. The first
pipelines were nothing special; they were short and sometimes made of wood. With their growing
popularity into the 1860s, the quality control followed over the pipe manufacturing, switching from
wrought iron to steal. (Pipeline 101, n.d.) Coming into the twenty first century, the pipeline has still
been playing a key role in the oil industry. Given, its importance to the oil industry it is important to

Of course the individuals would have to show authorship and originality. If the facts used in the
individuals ideas are common knowledge, facts available in a wide variety of sources or facts

there is a need. How plagiarism did became a rule for writers? When the Roman poet Martial
accused a rival, Fidentinus, of stealing his verses, he called him a kidnapper in Latin, plagiarius.
The term stuck (Lynch). Over several years individuals have been known to steal words or ideas
from other people. At one time it was considered appropriate to do that. It was acceptable to
build on another s work such as an apprentice to a master craftsman. To mimic work from another
was expected. Anyone that would deviate from a master s work would be considered
presumptuous enough to invent their own plots (Lynch). Among some of the famous people that
stole ideas from others were William Shakespeare and Benjamin Franklin to just name a few. So
if it was expected, why now is it considered a social crime? Early 18th century, things started to
change. The new norm was originality Copying from others started to be frowned upon. There
were great expectations for new work and imitation or old ideas were out. With that said, Good
authors are original, bad authors copy, and copying is no better than sordid Theft. (Lynch). This was

Horror Film Genre Essay
The two movies I viewed were Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, which were both
directed by Tobe Hopper. Both films displayed the general rules horror films generally follow
through the use of horror film genre conventions. For instance, both movies follow the good
verses evil story lines and in each the end does ultimately win. However, this is not entirely true
in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The friends represented the good and the chainsaw carrying monster
and his family portrayed the evil. In the end on of the friends, Sally, ultimately does escape from
being killed by the monster in the movie. However, her other four friends were taken down and

In Poltergeist, the world of ghosts that jumps at the family is not one considered ordinary or one
that would have any sort of rationale behind it. Many would not believe such a thing to be true no
matter if they had a house built on top of a graveyard or not. Ghosts and the supernatural do not
exist so this showing up in a film brings a sense of irrational thought which would likely keep the
audience of the horror film guessing for they do not know what to expect. However, in Texas
Chainsaw Massacre, mostly due to the fact the film was based on a true story, there is a rational
world where the events taking place could be explained. An audience can believe that such a
monster could exist because there are crazy enough people in the world that could be ruthless
murderers and cannibals. It is not something that would be a pleasant thought even if it can be
explained however rationale can be given behind it which is not typical in horror films. In
addition, although being in the dark about something is more frightening Texas Chainsaw
Massacre still did a good job of producing a scare in a rational horror film by still keeping the
element of surprise and suspense throughout the movie. The timing of the appearance of the evil in
each movie was just as similar to other movies, delayed. In Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it takes up
to half way through the movie for the chainsaw killer, Leatherface, to appear and attack his first
victim. In Poltergeist, the

Tobacco Use Teaching Methods
Introduction
Choosing the correct teaching method is important to help the learner retain and learn information
in an effective and efficient way. Tobacco use is a health related topic that needs further education
and intervention from a nurse. Group discussion and demonstration, and return demonstration are
two teaching methods of interest to me, which I believe will be beneficial to use when educating a
small group of five people about this health related topic are. Group discussion involves the
deliverance of medical information or education to a small group of individuals which may include
their family so information, opinions can be exchanged with the nurse. This is simple way to
deliver information to more than one person at one time if time management is a concern, and the
nurse is able to build trust and rapport with the group as a whole. Demonstration and return
demonstration works more effectively in a small group and involves education or teaching with
the nurse and learner(s). This method also allows time for feedback from both parties. The nurse
gives the learner a demonstration of a task to perform and the learner has to attempt to carry out
the task back showing competence, and the nurse is on standby to give cues as needed.
Group discussions Group discussions are beneficial as this teaching method is useful as it allows
the learners to share information about their personal experiences and is both economically and time

Crying Of Lot 49 Essay
Thomas Pynchon s The Crying of Lot 49 (1966) is one of the early instances of postmodern
literature, in which the spread of mass culture plays a central role. In addition, the novel explores
the ways, in which conspiracy of unknown forces or structures influence an individual s vision of
the world and self. The entire novelis saturated with references to popular culture; Oedipa s world
is filled with and dominated by mass culture technology, such as television, radio and newspaper,
and most of the people around her are in some ways representing various historical figures. The
names of the characters are an essential aspect of The Crying of Lot 49, and are reflecting both
popular culture and the struggle to determine one s identity in the novel. Oedipa s name is a
reference to the Ancient Greek tragedy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, the name of Oedipa s psychiatrist Dr. Hilarius is, for instance, a similar play of the
language, since there is nothing hilarious about his character, who is engaging in formidable
experiments at a World War II concentration camp. When it comes to experiencing paranoia and
conspiracy, the plot follows the main character Oedipa Maas, who discovers Trystero, a secret
postal service organization, which threatens the economy of the official postal service. The
information she finds about the existence of Trystero, however valid it may be, radically changes
her perception of the world. Throughout the novel, Oedipa becomes more and more paranoid and
disorganized, reading hidden meaning into everything. Solving the mystery of Trystero becomes
her ultimate priority in life and makes her unable to distinguish the world of her obsession from
the real world. Even though she is somewhat aware of creating her own reality, she does not know
what extent of the world she perceives is real and how much is a part of her

Twyla Tharp Research Paper
Dance has come a long way since it first began, and that road has been paved by different styles
and choreographers. Modern dance is one of the biggest contributions to dance today. It all began
with the rebellion against classical ballet. If it wasn t for Modern, many aspects and styles of dance
would not exist today. Also, without choreographers we would have no dance. One of the most
influential Modern choreographers is Twyla Tharp. Twyla Tharp was born on July 1, 1941 in
Portland, Indiana. She began taking dance in 1950 when she was nine years old. Her family
moved to Rialto, California where she began taking lessons at the Vera Lynn School of Dance as
a high school student. For college, Tharp attended Pamona College in California. She then
transferred to Barnard College in New York City. She graduated from there in 1963 with a degree
in art history. While in New York she studied under Richard Thomas, Martha Graham
, and Merce
Cunningham. In 1966, she formed her own company, Twyla Tharp Dance. In that company, she
traveled around the world performing original works. Tharp has choreographed more than one
hundred sixty works: one hundred twenty nine dances, twelve television specials, six Hollywood
movies, four full length... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I know that it is hard to keep the balance between modern and classical dance, yet she has done it.
It is amazing that she has studied under some of the most prestigious and well known modern
dancers and choreographers of all time. She has accomplished so much and is continuing to
amaze the world with her talent. She may not be a well known choreographer but she should be.
I hope that one day I can be half an inspiration as she is. During this project, I have become very
familiar with Twyla Tharp. She, honestly, has become a major inspiration to me. Her dancing style
and works remind me of the types of dance I love the most. I hope that I can one day meet

Example Of Moral Philosophy
Moral Philosophy is the rational study of the meaning and justification of moral claims. A moral
claim evaluates the rightness or wrongness of an action or a person s character . For example,
stealing is wrong claims that the act of stealing is wrong, while people should not be dishonest
claims a character trait (i.e. dishonesty) is wrong (Gert and Gert).
Descriptively, morality refers to certain codes of conduct put forward by a society or a group (such
as a religion) or accepted by an individual for his/her own behavior. Normatively, it refers to a
code of conduct that, given specified conditions, would be put forward by all rational persons. (
What Is Moral Philosophy? ).

Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart
In Chinua Achebe s 19th century Nigerian novel Things Fall Apart, the Ibo culture has internal
problems, which ultimately cause of the downfall of the clan. These problems include a poor
social system, superstitious beliefs, and a lack of suitable decision making. These few problems
are essential. One of the flaws inside the Ibo culture that eventually leads to their downfall is the
social system. The weaker people join the church as a way to gain acceptance. The osu, or outcasts
who lived in the Ibo culture want to feel accepted and as a result, follow the Christians. The two
outcasts shaved off their hair, and soon they were the strongest adherents of the new faith (157).
These two outcasts never have the feeling of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another problem within the clan is the superstition. Superstition is associated with religion in
the Ibo culture. The religion is closely associated with tradition. An example of religion and
tradition is the egwugwu. The Ibo people do not welcome change. They have superstitions about
twins being evil and needing to stay into the forest to die, and an evil forest where if someone
lives on it, they will die within a few weeks. The evil forest is actually for disposing dead bodies.
The villagers assume all these superstitions true. When the church arrives, the plot of land they
are given is from the evil forest. The inhabitants of Mbanta expected them all to be dead within
four days (149). The church lives past 4 days and the villagers give them up to 28 days to live.
The church thrives and does not die. Villagers are baffled and do not know how to explain this.
The villagers have superstitions that have become common knowledge. This common knowledge
is abolished right in front of them. Not long after, he won his first three converts (149). The
people rely too much on old traditions and superstition. These traditions and superstitions lead to
the downfall of the Ibo people because they are destroyable. For the Ibo people, this is destroying
what they believe to be true. Doing this would result in people not following the religion anymore
just as the three people who convert to Christianity. The lack of moral decision making

Science Of The War On The World War II Essay

Science In Between the War
From the sponsorship given the Casa de ContrataciГіn by Queen Isabella to the government funding
of many ongoing scientific experiments, science has always been heavily linked with politics.
Political power often collaborates with technological development in such a manner that societal
ideals reflected in the political regime correlates with the objectives behind scientific
development. As a result, conflict of political powers as manifested in war leads to an agitation
of scientific objectives and a consequent shift in material progress as scientific exploration
becomes oriented in a different direction. This leads to the creation of new materials targeted
towards increasing the advantage held by the patron country in the war of political ideals. The
ideas Einstein expressed in his letter to the League of American Writers pertain to the dichotomy
between fascism and democracy in the context of scientific progress, collaborating with the
historical context of the letter to establish the impact of the end of World War II as well as the
beginning of the age known as the Cold Waron scientific progress, influencing scientific relations
and communication between international scientific bodies as well as the objectives of scientific
concepts being applied to societal needs. The time directly following World War II was an
innovative period in which scientific development was greatly

Allusions In The Tempest
Allusion Allusion is a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical,
cultural, literary or political significance. Often the reference is well known and can sometimes
give further insight on certain meanings and display greater context. Example 1: Marlowe s
Doctor Faustus Act III: LearnГЁd Faustus, to find the secrets of astronomy Graven in the book of
Jove s high firmament, Did mount him up to scale Olympus top, Jove s high firmament in this
passage refers to the vast stretches of the universe. Olympus top is an allusion to Greek
Mythology where Mount Olympus is the home of gods. Example 2: Milton s Paradise Lost , Book

It is a metonymy because the word ears replaces the concept of attention. Example 2: Out, Out
by Robert Frost. As he swung toward them holding up the hand Half in appeal, but half as if to
keep The life from spilling In these lines, the expression The life from spilling is a metonymy
that refers to spilling of blood. It develops a link between life and blood. The loss of too much
blood means loss of life. Ode Ode is a literary technique that is lyrical in nature, but not very
lengthy. You have often read odes in which poets praise people, natural scenes, and abstract
ideas. Example 1: Ode to the West Wind by Percy Bysshe Shelley Scatter, as from an
unextinguish d hearth Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind! Be through my lips to
unawaken d earth The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind, If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
This presents an example of irregular ode that employs neither three parts, nor four line stanzas like
a Horatian ode. Nevertheless, each stanza of ode is distinct from the other stanzas in rhyme
scheme, pattern and length. Example 2: Ode to the Confederate Dead by Allen

  • 2. Gender Identity Is The Assumption Of There Being Binary... Binary Logic: Another issue with research pertaining to sexual identity is the assumption of there being binary categories, such as gay/straight, male/female, etc. Research in this area is generally dichotomized (e.g. male/female, gay/straight), which can foster rigid identity assumptions, foster homogeneous understanding of research particiapnts and results, foster a divide between normal and deviant behavior, as well as mask inherent variation in different groups and populations (Johnson Repta, 2012). Bringing greater awareness to the complexity of sexual and gender identity could have transformative effects on how research is conducted. Some scholars in the social work field have begun to acknowledge and recognize the increasing evidence that sexual and gender identity are not binary categories, as well that categories might not even be an accurate way of understanding these phenomena (Burdge, 2007; Roche Gringeri, 2010). While an understanding that the binary model is flawed has gained some traction in social work research, the majority of researchers continue to ignore and disregard this possibility, consequently reinforcing this erroneous dichotomous paradigm (Rassi, 2011). It has also been noted that critiques from postmodern, poststructural, and queer theory perspectives, as well as from individuals or groups (e.g. transgender, bisexual, intersex) who do not fit neatly into binary categories continue to remain essentially absent within social work ... • 3. The Sacred Language of Toni Morrison Essay The Sacred Language of Toni Morrison Toni Morrison makes a good point when, in her acceptance speech upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, she says, Narrative . . . is . . . one of the principal ways in which we absorb knowledge (7). The words we use and the way in which we use them is how we, as humans, communicate to each other our thoughts, feelings, and actions and therefore our knowledge of the world and its peoples. Knowledge is power. In this way, our language, too, is powerful. In her acceptance speech, Morrison tries to communicate the idea that we must be careful with how we use our words. She analogizes the use of language to the life of a metaphoric bird in a tale of a wise, old, blind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout her speech, Toni Morrison works towards defining and supporting this thesis of responsibility. It is our responsibility, as users of words, to make language thrive. Elizabeth Fox Genovese has a similar goal, but takes a different approach in her essay The Claims of a Common Culture: Gender, Race, Class and the Canon. She speaks on the use and composition of the canon taught in humanities classes. Her idea is that the canon of today is much too one sided and does not include the influence of the several different cultures, peoples, and ideas that make up our society. She says that with respect to representativeness, the canon fails woefully. It represent[s] a small, sometimes minute, portion of the elite, which itself constitute[s] a statistical minority of the population (Fox Genovese 19). In this abstract way, Fox Genovese is reiterating Morrison s words that what we say, and how we say it (or teach it), or what we fail to say (as in the canon taught today) is monumentally influencing and impactful upon others. If we are not aware of the words that come out of our mouths due to lack of thought or attention, we all suffer and we are all at fault: When language dies, out of carelessness, disuse, indifference, and absence of esteem, or killed by fiat, . . . all users and makers are accountable for its demise (Morrison 14 15). • 4. Star Life Cycle Essay The first stage in the life cycle of a star is the Nebula. A Nebula is a swirling sea of dust and gas but, it is not a star yet. Over time, the dust and gas will collect into a ball that sweeps through the Nebula. The ball of gas and dust then begins to grow. The Nebula becomes a Protostar, the second stage of a star s life cycle, once the ball of gas and dust starts to shrink because of it s own mass and gravity. The Protostar is still not a star yet. At this stage it can be up to 100x larger than our Sun! The Protostar will keep shrinking and start to heat up, until it becomes roughly the size of our Sun. This is the fourth stage of a star s life cycle. The Star diameter will be about 700,000 km. An average star will live for about 10 billion years in this stage. Eventually the Hydrogen begins to run out, until the Star becomes a Red Giant. The Red Giant is stage five of a star s life cycle and this fiery ball of nuclear fusion is about 50,000,000 km in diameter! The inner core of the Red Giant begins to shrink, and get hotter. Then, the outer layers begin to separate from the inner layers and the Red Giant becomes larger in size. Over time it could completely lose it s outer layer and start to shrink again. The second to last stage could result in the Red Giant shrinking until it becomes a White Dwarf or the Red Giant continuing to shrink until it explodes. If the outcome is a White Dwarf, it would create a small, hot, hard to see star that is smaller than the Earth. If the outcome is an explosion, it would result in the remnants of the core and a Nova or Supernova, which is a mass spitting off dust and gases that would start the entire star life cycle over ... The history of political cartooning is used for social and political messages which goes back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in America with Benjamin Franklin s Join or Die , which depicts a snake whose severed parts represent the colonies and unless put together are sure to perish. • 6. Political Changes In Akhenaten Along with his striking religious changes, Akhenaten also led a political revolution, namely in the perception of the pharaoh. One of the most visible changes in Akhenaten s reign was a drastic change in art. Public perception of the pharaoh was essential to political power, but Akhenaten s portraits do not portray the pharaoh in the larger than life style associated with other New Kingdom rulers. Firstly, Akhenatenwas feminine in appearance, and is shown affectionately playing with his children and Nefertiti. Religious life was tied to social life in every aspect, and the Egyptian year was based around religious festivals. These festivals stopped under Atenism, and the people of Egypt were introduced to a new tradition: the procession of Akhenaten and Nefertiti mirroring the sun moving across the sky. However, this new tradition was not capable of adequately replacing the traditions of the past: The festivals of the past which had divided the year and provided the stops and starts which powered day to day living were removed; and they do not seem to have been replaced despite the fact, as Barry Kemp has observed that worship of the sun provides a ready made set of calendrical feasts [in the form of] the solstices and equinoxes. The progress of the king along the Royal Road, however splendidly orchestrated, offered but a poor substitute. Egyptians lived their lives based around the various festivals of their gods, and in removing these festivals, Akhenaten removed a piece of culture he could not replace. Maat, the Egyptian concept of order controlled by the pharaoh meant that every single part of daily life was touched by the introduction of the new religion. Thebes, the cultural center of Egypt, was abandoned by the pharaoh, and he moved life to Akhenaten. • 7. Truth Is Culturally Relative The quality of being true is related to something clear, without any uncertainty. This is perfectly summarized by the Greek word for truth is бјЂО»О®ОёОµО№О± (alГ©theia), from the privative prefix бјЂ (a ), meaning not , and О»О®ОёОµ ( lethe), oblivion , which, as Martin Heidegger (2001) explained by analysing its etymology, refers to the state of not being hidden . Truthis a cross issue, that embraces everything related to humans, from the most ordinary aspect of daily life, to the most deep religious thought. The need to find what is true is part of the human nature, but as the German philosopher Edmund Husserl (1965) stated, that same nature, which gave us the need of knowledge, at the same time bound us to subjectivity, limiting our understanding to judgement and interpretation, thus, truth can only be obtained gradually, through a never ending task. This process of understanding finds its ancient roots in Greece, in the VII VI century B.C., when philosophy was born and the slow loss of universal certainties has started. The very first interest of philosophers was that to define the concept of Being, a wide notion that embraces objective and subjective features of reality. Throughout the philosophy of truth, objectivism and subjectivism lead to the development of the two major approaches to reality, Relativism and Universalism. One of the first interpretation of truth and knowledge was given by the sophists, and it finds its primary source in Protagoras fragment of all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The point of view, as it came from a twelve year old, withheld some important points and perspectives. At this moment, former President Adams (an opponent to President Andrew Jackson) chose to openly oppose slavery. But already, most southerners saw what the Democrats wanted them to see: that their surest guarantee of safety within the Union was a disciplined Democratic Party that avoided sectional arguments. The Democrats said that a party that united northern and southern rights into a states rights, limited government majority could guarantee states rights within the Union. This statement answered the questions that arose during the Missouri debates: how do you protect the slave holding South within the federal Union. Martin Van Burenbelieved the alternative to this agenda, the isolation of the slaveholding south, would lead to moral danger of the republic. There are and never will be any more. As a species, the Passenger Pigeon was hunted to extinction because they were noisy, messy, and disruptive. They would fly in huge (like blocking out the sun type of huge) flocks, and one could imagine the towns that were flown over. In Charles Roth s book, Then There Were None, he details how the extinction of an entire species was possible: the trees and forests (the bird s natural habitat) were destroyed at nesting sites, which the passenger pigeon was very specific about, and the young were eaten, being more tender and palatable. Unfortunately, humans hadn t learned yet the reach of their terrible destructive arm. Since everyone was eating the young and destroying forests, the picky passenger pigeon was not only old, they were also unwilling to lower their expectations for a nesting site. Therefore, no new pigeons were born, and there were no replacements for the elderly. Populations decline very quickly when there are no youth. As a result, the passenger pigeon is no more (Roth, 1977). What did we learn from this calamity? • 22. The Final Book Of The Divine Comedy By Dante Alighieri Introduction Paradise is the third and final book in the Divine Comedy series. It s taken me awhile to get through them, but I ve managed to read all three books and write reviews for each of them. One thing to keep in mind about this review is that the Questions Asked and Lessons Learned sections might contain spoilers. If you don t want to have the book spoiled, go ahead and skip over them to the Recommendation section. History of Author Dante Alighieri. Dante was the original writer of Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. He was a well known and well respected poet in the middle ages. His Divine Comedy (The three books I listed above) is considered by many to be the best writing in the Italian language and is considered a masterpiece of world literature. You could ask almost anyone who Dante was and they will likely know who he is and be able to name The Divine Comedy as one of his works. He s so well known in Italy that they refer to him as the father of the Italian language. He defended the vernacular and would write in the Tuscan dialect for some of his works (The New Life, for example). Because of this, many other writers of the time and in the future would follow the precedent Dante set. His influence has been carried down from generation to generation. Proof of this is found in his style of the interlocking three line rhyme scheme. Mark Musa. Musa was the translator and note taker for of his own published version of Dante s Divine Comedy. How To Build An Autocracy Growing up in a community where the education succeeds, and learning is rich, it is easy to see why America as a whole is ignorant to facts and education that is essential to fill our civil duties of voting. The underlying facts of what s to come is hidden because of rhetoric and lying to the public, and the public is blind to these facts because of their lack of education. In America, the lack of quality education and knowledge of extremely important information will lead to the destruction of our country and to our civic society. In the article Ignorance Does not Lead to Education Bliss, published in The Atlantic, written by Jonathan R. Cole states, When this kind of ignorance reaches the level of presidential aspirants, it must give Americans pause. Where does the ignorance originate? Why has it become so pervasive in the United States today? Can the U.S. have meaningful elections if its citizens have a paucity of civic knowledge and history that might allow them to make informed decisions? A significant part of the answer lies, I believe, in the failures of the American education system . What Cole is arguing is that why should we in the United States hold elections if we seriously have no idea what we are talking about. We are making decisions without ever really knowing what we are talking about or what people are even saying. We have a paucity of knowledge for the important things that we need to know like civic knowledge and the history of our country and of the world, which are essential topics. • 24. The Battle Of Santa Rosa Island After several months of battles between the north and the south in several states, including North Carolina, Virginia, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee, the war reached Florida in 1861. The first battle to reach Florida occurred when there was a standoff at Fort Pickens. When Florida seceded from the Union, there were Union soldiers stationed at Fort Pickens that were asked to surrender. A force of almost 1,000 volunteer soldiers landed on Santa Rosa Island with the intent of raiding the outlying defenses and camps near Fort Pickens. General Richard H. Anderson led these soldiers. Mainly the Sixth New York Infantry Regiment defended the forts and camps. Soon after the Confederates burned and ransacked the Union camp, reinforcements were sent from Fort Pickens to assist the confused Union soldiers. The Confederates had 18 killed, 39 wounded, and 30 imprisoned soldiers, while the Union had 14 killed, 29 wounded, and 20 imprisoned. By March 1862, the Confederates completely withdrew from the area. This battle became known as the Battle of Santa Rosa Island because the union troops landed on Santa Rosa Island, four miles east of Fort Pickens. Most of the civil war took place in the states of Virginia and Tennessee but two major battles of and several smaller altercations took place in the state of Florida. On February 20, 1864 the largest civil war battle in Florida took place near Lake City. This battle occurred a year after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and it was ... Natural selection is the outcome of inheritance, variance, and differential reproduction and can operate at many if not all levels of the taxonomic hierarchy (Bergstrom Dugatkin, 2012). If the level meets the requirements of natural selection, it may be acted upon. Natural selection can vary in the force of selection between each level in the hierarchy and depends highly on the amount of units within the level. The higher the taxonomic level the less units, less variation and multiplication that is found. The levels in which natural selectionoperates and the strength of its force will be discussed moving down the hierarchy of genes, cells, individuals, populations composed of closely related kin, and groups of distantly related... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most diploid species maintain a one to one sex ratio because it is evolutionarily stable (Fisher, 1930). However, when population ratios do not fit the Fisherian sex ratio of one to one, selection will favor the gene/allele that is in limited supply until their frequency is greater or equal to the competing gene (Fisher, 1930). Therefore, selection works at the level of the gene in maintaining evolutionarily stable Fisherian sex ratios. Not only does natural selection operate at the level of the gene, it has also been found to operate at the level of the cell. Since different cell types within an individual have different rates of division, the morphology of organisms results from selection at the level of the cell (Lewontin, 1970). Natural selection is a strong force at the cellular level due to high levels of variation and therefore multiplication, and heredity which favors the cell lineages that are better adapted to leaving behind descendent cells (Smith, 1987). An example of natural selection operating at the level of the cell is shown by clonal selection theory of immunity where normal tissue repair and neoplastic growth are results of natural selection at the cellular level (Lewonith, 1970). Normal tissue repair occurs as a response to destruction of tissue, where certain cell types reproduce faster than normal in order to repair the tissue, then returns to a normal rate after repair (Lewonith, 1970). ... It is important to address why they are perceived to be harmful, if they actually are, and how they can be improved for the future, or if they should be eliminated. The use of pipelines date back as far as 500BC in China. In those times, the pipelines were made of bamboo, used to separate the salt from the sea water. The United States did not adopt these until much later. Edwin L. Drake drilled his first commercial oil well in the United States near the city Titusville in Pennsylvania; the oil which they nicknamed rock oil was then used as a less expensive alternative to whale oil. It was used as lubricant and as fuel for lamps. It was not long after this that it was realized they would need a more cost effective way of transporting the oil from place to place. At the time, Teamsters were using horses and wagons to get the oil to the markets; one barrel going five miles costed more than the entire rail charged to go to New York City. For that reason, the pipeline was created. The first pipelines were nothing special; they were short and sometimes made of wood. With their growing popularity into the 1860s, the quality control followed over the pipe manufacturing, switching from wrought iron to steal. (Pipeline 101, n.d.) Coming into the twenty first century, the pipeline has still been playing a key role in the oil industry. Given, its importance to the oil industry it is important to understand how ... When the Roman poet Martial accused a rival, Fidentinus, of stealing his verses, he called him a kidnapper in Latin, plagiarius. The term stuck (Lynch). Over several years individuals have been known to steal words or ideas from other people. At one time it was considered appropriate to do that. It was acceptable to build on another s work such as an apprentice to a master craftsman. To mimic work from another was expected. Anyone that would deviate from a master s work would be considered presumptuous enough to invent their own plots (Lynch). Among some of the famous people that stole ideas from others were William Shakespeare and Benjamin Franklin to just name a few. So if it was expected, why now is it considered a social crime? Early 18th century, things started to change. The new norm was originality Copying from others started to be frowned upon. Ghosts and the supernatural do not exist so this showing up in a film brings a sense of irrational thought which would likely keep the audience of the horror film guessing for they do not know what to expect. However, in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, mostly due to the fact the film was based on a true story, there is a rational world where the events taking place could be explained. An audience can believe that such a monster could exist because there are crazy enough people in the world that could be ruthless murderers and cannibals. It is not something that would be a pleasant thought even if it can be explained however rationale can be given behind it which is not typical in horror films. In addition, although being in the dark about something is more frightening Texas Chainsaw Massacre still did a good job of producing a scare in a rational horror film by still keeping the element of surprise and suspense throughout the movie. Modern dance is one of the biggest contributions to dance today. It all began with the rebellion against classical ballet. If it wasn t for Modern, many aspects and styles of dance would not exist today. Also, without choreographers we would have no dance. One of the most influential Modern choreographers is Twyla Tharp. Twyla Tharp was born on July 1, 1941 in Portland, Indiana. She began taking dance in 1950 when she was nine years old. Her family moved to Rialto, California where she began taking lessons at the Vera Lynn School of Dance as a high school student. For college, Tharp attended Pamona College in California. She then transferred to Barnard College in New York City. She graduated from there in 1963 with a degree in art history.
