Republican Party Model Analysis
The next set of models changes the dependent variable to national party strength. There has long been
a disagreement over the manner of the shift in party strength. Some have argued that the realignment
of southern politics started with a top down approach. Others argue that the realignment was fueled by
success down ballot, which led to ambitious Republican politicians seeking and finding success higher
up the ballot. Besides the change in the dependent variable, there is also a change to models 4 and 5
by adding the state party index to the model. This will allow a test of the top down/bottom up question
on the southern realignment. Because of the controversy relating to this topic, any significant finding

We do find that using our all encompassing Major Party Index, which the interaction worked just as
expected. When we broke that index into parts to look at the role of that interaction on elections to
state and federal office, we found that the expected relationship between income and the decline in
agriculture just did not occur. This baffling finding provides more questions that need answered, but
we have little to go on in determining that answer. The positive findings for the first three models does
provided evidence not just that southerners adjusted their voting due to changes in the economy,
particularly rising incomes. Instead we see that voters did for at least some voting decisions, take into
account changes in the structure of the economic system itself. The problem is that the findings do not
hold when we look at party strength for elections to state offices and national offices. It is confusing
how party strength itself can be significant but its components are not. The implications of that finding
is obviously large but it is tempered by the lack of significance across all

Literature Review On Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is a common chronic condition, occurring in approximately three million people in
the United States (American College of Cardiology, 2015). It can lead to serious complications such as
blood clots, stroke, or heart failure (American College of Cardiology, 2015). Therefore, healthcare
providers must understand how to manage new onset and chronic atrial fibrillation.
Patients may present to the emergency department with atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular
response in both new onset and chronic cases. There are different choices of treatment for atrial
fibrillation with rapid ventricular response. For instance, healthcare providers can choose a rate
controlling medication such as metoprolol or diltiazem. Or they ... Show more content on

The main limitation of this study was the design. Researchers were unable to randomize the groups.
Furthermore, they were unable to detect subgroups (Hines et. al., 2016). They didn t get to directly
interview patients. Another limitation was the setting of the study because it is a teaching hospital.
Finally, the researchers were unable to demonstrate the length of research because they only used two

The major conclusion of this study was that there is no difference in effectiveness between metoprolol

Moonshining In The Carolinas
Moonshining in the Carolinas Are you proud of your heritage? Moonshine making can be found in
many southern family s heritage. According to Ed Grabianowski, the prohibition of the 1920 s
increased the demand for moonshine. This increased the number of people making moonshine for a
living. While moonshining in the Carolinas is fascinating to some, others may ask: what is moonshine,
is it dangerous, and can people still find it today in our society? According to Encyclopedia.com,
moonshine is the name used to describe liquor that is illegally made and sold. Another name used for

Museum Of Art Analysis
My little legs shuffled along as tried to catch up to my mother, taking the marble staircase two steps at
a time. Why is she so excited, I thought to myself. She slowed down as we entered a tall room, colors
and frames and canvases lined along the walls. I followed behind with an unimpressed glare across my
face and mumbles upon my lips: Why do we always have to come to the art museum. I had seen more
art than any other twelve year old I knew. In fact, at the time I was fairly certain that I had seen more
art than anyone I knew.
She shushed me as we stepped into a small, dark room tucked away in the corner of the museum. She
pointed to a painting not much bigger than my head, and I walked into the surrounding pool of light.
The plaque underneath the painting read Woman Holding a Balance Johannes Vermeer I stood still for
probably the longest I ever had, so perplexed by what hung in front of me. My mind tried to
comprehend how the artist could use shape and color to make such an ordinary woman appear so
complex. I wished to have that same ability to transform lives and ideas, and for one solitary moment I
understood why my mom had dragged me here all these years.
As a teenager, I begged my mother to take me to art museums, I listened to her talk about every
painting she knew, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reflection On My Life
I have not only learned things throughout the course of, Christ, Culture, and the University, but I have
truly soaked up the lectures so that I can apply everything to my daily life. This course has been such
an eye opener in my life, I remember coming into this course not knowing exactly what it was and
being confused as to why I was even put into it. Over the weeks spent coming to class, I finally
figured out what the course meant to me. This was a course that was devoted to me, to figure out who
I am and what my beliefs are. I believe that this course was set in place to not only figure out what I
truly believe, but it was to help me grow and learn more about my religion and others. Throughout this
course, I was able to figure out my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have learned to think critically over my time in this course about my worldview, with the help of
guidance every step of the way. I am able to express my worldview to others and at this point in my
life I can now share the knowledge I have with others and hopefully even help them find their own
worldview. Personally, the main thing that I have noticed about myself is that I am no longer searching
for the words to say to other people when they ask about what I truly believe in. This course has
taught me to be bold in what I believe in and to not be afraid to share it with others. I want to be able
to continue to use my worldview in my life as a huge stepping stone into my future. Though my
worldview may change over time, at this point in my life I am proud to understand what a worldview
is and what mine is at the moment.
While a worldview is difficult to define, especially when it comes to your own, figuring out who you
are and who you are meant to be is something that is not found easily. Though I struggled to figure out
my worldview, I believe that figuring out my spiritual gifts and my personality was something even
harder. My first week here at Southeastern University was surreal, it was insane to think that I had
actually come this far. I can remember sitting in my room and thinking to myself that I was not yet
sure of what my purpose was, and I knew that I was going to struggle to find it. Taking this course has

Ethical Dilemmas And Ethical Issues
Some ethical dilemmas that we may have to face professionally come down to truth vs. loyalty. In this
essay I will be discussing the ethical issues two characters faced, the ethical teachings and having to
choose between your biological family and your professional family. I will be doing this by examining
the decisions made if they were morally and ethically right or wrong. Applying the locus of control
and the looking at the ethical dilemmas they faced.
One of the methods we use in some of our daily decision making is utilitarian reasoning, to decide the
morally or ethically right and wrong course of actions. A situation in which the course of action the

Using GIS in the Study of the Steel Industry
How GIS is used in the study case? The U.S. steel industry continues to face formidable competition
globally, especially from a costing, supply chain, and procurement perspective. The intensity of this
competition is forcing many steel producers to look for greater efficiencies form their own operations.
One of the most effective continues to be the streamlining how product, project, and process
information to create a unified system of record which can be used for knowledge management
(Armstrong, 2008). From an analysis of the readings in Using GIS Technology for Document and
Asset Management (Armstrong, 2008) it is apparent that visual representation of information and
knowledge taxonomies across the various locations of a U.S. Steel manufacturing plant are invaluable
in increasing efficiency and performance. These manufacturing centers often rely on a very broad set
of content based sources, information and knowledge all used for keeping each production machine
running efficiently while also ensuring that the steel mill workers have the information they need to do
their jobs. The case study is unique from a GIS perspective in that it combines the spatial data related
to documents and knowledge repositories throughout an enterprise to the workflows associated with
them. The myriad of data sources throughout any business have a high percentage of content
associated with location based intelligence as well (Armstrong, 2008). The case study shows how the

Neil Degrasse Tyson Research Paper
The Man of the Cosmos
We are part of this universe; we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both those facts,
is that the universe is in us (Tyson). These words are spoken by one of the most influential and one of
the smartest people of our time. He is astrophysicist, a teacher, and an author. A person teaching the
world the beauty of our universe and many other things. I am talking about Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Neil deGrasse Tyson was born on October 5, 1958 in New York Manhattan by Cyril and Sunchita
deGrasse Tyson. Tyson s journey to becoming what he is right now is very interesting once you learn
about it. His love for science all started when he was 9 years old when he went to go visit the Hayden
Planetarium, which is in New York. He started his studies in The Bronx High School of Science and
while he attended this school he would give lectures about astronomy and was the school editor for the
Physical Science Journal in his school, so he started teaching people before he made it into his career.
When it was time for him to choose a University, he was called by Carl Sagan to come by and visit the

Accounting Theory
Assignment Task
The four largest Australian Banks have faced considerable pressure from the community and the
government in recent times. This pressure has arisen due to their interest rate increases in association
with their high reported earnings. As accountants, we are responsible for preparing financial
statements and calculating the profit figures.
In your opinion, do you think the big banks are managing their reported earnings to show lesser profits
than what they are actually earning (i.e. using earnings management techniques)? You are required,
and must, read and incorporate academic journal articles and other relevant materials to justify your
viewpoint. INTRODUCTION
Accounting can be broadly defined as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to do so, it is necessary to understand and define earnings Management.
Definition of Earnings Management
Healy and Wahlen (1999) define earnings management as:
Earnings management occurs when managers use judgement in financial reporting and in structuring
transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some stakeholders about the underlying
economic performance of the company or to influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported
accounting numbers.
Another definition is given by Fields et al. (2001) who state that:
Earnings management occurs when managers exercise their discretion over accounting numbers with
or without restrictions. Such discretion can be either firm value maximizing or opportunistic .
The above definitions highlight the point that managerial intent is a criterion for earnings management
(Spohr 2005). Several academic literatures seek to point out the activities which can be considered to
be earnings management. However, as the definition of earnings management does not rely on any
one item of the income statement, it does not need to be directly connected to reported earnings. Its
impact is through accounting numbers and may also be directed at financial ratios as opposed to
earnings (Schipper 1989). Dechow and Skinner (2000) have classified earnings management as
follows:
Reporting Type Accounting choices
Within GAAP
Conservative Accounting Overly aggressive recognition of provisions or reserves

1.) Why do companies like Pepsi need to globalize? What are the various ways in which foreign
companies can enter a foreign market? What hurdles and problems did Pepsi Face when it tried to

operations include a need for competitive advantage against rivaling companies, increase their
economies of scale to lower their production and distribution costs in moving products into new and
existing markets, entering new markets to increase brand image and brand loyalty, and to increase net

Cleopatra A Life Essay
Book Report: Cleopatra: A Life.
I have recently read an amazing biography called, Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff. The book,
written by a well known author of biographies, tells the story of Cleopatra, the most powerful woman
in history, who ruled Egypt in 70 BC. She is also the beauty, with whom Caesar and Mark Anthony
fell hopelessly in love. Written in a unique way, trying to abolish stereotypes about Cleopatra, it is a
fascinating novel, about power and love. It shows how these two mix and matched, while creating
history.
Stacy Schiff was born in 1961. She finished the Philips Andover Academy and went on to earn a BA

Cleopatra was a woman. Cleopatra stood at one of the most dangerous intersections in history: that of
women and power. Clever women, Euripides had warned hundreds of years earlier, were dangerous
(112). The number of successful female leaders up until this day is drastically smaller than the male
ones, and even now in 21st century the stereotype of a leader is a male. How did Cleopatra manage to
go around this stereotype and become such a successful ruler? She got the men of her time obsessed
with her. When thinking about power, we should remember Aristotle s saying, Yet what difference
does it make weather the women rule or the rulers are ruled by women? The result is the same .
Cleopatra managed to be a ruler herself, while ruling the most influential men of her time. No one
before, or after Cleopatra was ever able to do this again, but to this day she is a role model. She
proved that not only men can be in charge and that women can do as much as a man

On September 11, 2001, America witnessed the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history. Grief stricken,
angry, and shocked, people from all over America came together in the face of tragedy and solidly

How Did Rock Music Influence The Music Of The 20th Century
Music styles of different time periods influenced the diversity of many genres. The music styles and
genres of the 20th century all started from one point and continue to expand over time. The style of
jazz music built the basis for rock n roll music, and the style of rock n roll music built the basis for
pop music. Basic rhythms, inspirational lyrics, and the emotion the music style exerts all contribute to
the creation of new genres. The process of evolution influenced by multiple styles created the music of
the 20th Century. The prominent music of the early 20th century was the sleek rhythms of jazz and
blues. The field hollers, hymns, and work songs from African Americans in the 1800s created the base
for jazz music. Until 1901, improvisation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twenties jazz, 50s rock, and 80s hip hop determined the sound the pop genre. The sound consisted of
simple and clean repeating melodies with a beat to dance to. The creation of pop music occurred
around the time of the invention of the television making it accessible to mass market around the
world (Pop Music). With the outbreak of rock n roll in the 50s, the 60s consisted of the reinvention of
rock n roll by John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Mick Jagger. The Beatles also reinvented the rock n roll
sound to pop during the British Invasion as rock n roll s fresh and early energy of the 50s and early
60s had declined (Norton, 823). The Beatles influenced the pop genre commercially and artistically by
validating that rock n roll could embrace a limitless variety of harmonies, structures, and sounds (The
Beatles Bio). Disco and dance music emerged from the pop genre in the 70s. The ephemeral disco era
influenced the style of music from artists Rod Stewart and Diana Ross through the rhythms and tunes
of music from stars like The Bee Gees and Gloria Gaynor (Popular Music). Stars such as Madonna,
Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Prince began to emerge in the 80s, and they influenced
American music through up and coming music videos. They also influenced prominent 80s fashion
trends that were portrayed through their music videos. Artists of the 80s continued to revive their
music personal styles to keep up with the youth of the new generations (Music Played). Ambitious boy

Notes On Credit Rating Agencies
Literature review:
Dror Pranes (2008) said that the participants of the market have a divergent expectation. But they can
be classified as optimistic or pessimistic based on set of knowledge. He also argues that the credit
rating announcement does not give any undisclosed information to the investors or the market. It only
attempts to homogenize the investor s belief.
According to Adelson (2012) credit rating plays a vital role in providing an independent opinion about
the creditworthiness of the issuer and bridging the gap between lenders and borrowers. Lazarescu
(2003) says standardising the value judgement in relation to borrowers in the current scenario of
globalisation is contributed by credit rating agency.
De Haan and Amtenbrink(2011) argued that there are flaws in the use of credit rating agencies
judgement in regulation and accounting. The agencies have a substantial impact on the bonds and their
interest. But when the bond is downgraded it is harmful. There will be herd behaviour among
investors trying to liquidate investment. Additionally Mathis (2009) said that the construction of issuer
pays is a critical problem which may result in conflict of interest. This will make the issuers to shop
the ratings. They will go for the rating agency that provides the most favourable rating.
Journal of common market studies (2012) explains that the rating agencies suffer from shortcomings.

College Students Dropout
As a college student, why would they go through the process of filling out applications and paying all
of that money, just to dropout? The contributing factors that relate to college students dropping out are
putting social and recreational activities before class, students experiencing stress and paying for the
cost of tuition. Clearly, there are many factors that contribute to the high dropout rate among college
students.
The first factor that contributes to the high dropout rate among college students is students putting
social and recreational activities before classes. In college, students can participate in many
recreational/social activities. Some of the options they have to pick from are sororities/fraternities,
intramural sports, clubs and sporting events. All of these options take up time, which is why they need
to balance out school and recreational/social activities. Balancing out their education and activities or
devoting more time towards your education will be beneficial in the long run. It will be beneficial in
the long run since you won t fall behind in classes, since you are making equal time for everything.
Lack of study often leads to grades plummeting drastically. The college student could decide to
dropout due to the low grades all because they invested too much time in the recreational/social aspect
of college. Clearly, students putting social and recreational activities before classes is a cause of a
college student dropping out of college.

Elizabeth I And Later The English Monarchs Essay
Elizabeth 1
To the best of my understanding Elizabeth I and later the English Monarchs with regard to religious
uniformity, believed in, and were in search of a religious settlement that would bring peace for all the
people. You could draw the conclusion that this very Act of Uniformity proclaimed by Elizabeth I in
1559 which was actually made up of two separate acts of Parliament, have in part created the religious
freedoms we enjoy today. My thesis would be that this religious uniformity would shape a lot of
things that would come to pass later on in life, as Elizabeth I ideas and beliefs would set a tone that
would shape religion and the beliefs on how to worship that still go on this this current day. One of
The act of Supremacy and the act of uniformity, the act of Supremacy re established England s
independence from Rome, while the act of uniformity established a set form of worship and made
church attendance on Sundays and holy days something that was obligatory. This very act would go
on to shape some of the laws, and a lot of the thinking behind the way things are still done to this very
day. Some of the laws are influence by the act of uniformity... In this time period different religious
beliefs were being questioned and shaped, and the act of uniformity was designed to create order so
that all the different religious groups could follow a unified religious belief. Elizabeth I ultimate goal
was to create and build a stable, peaceful nation

The Legend Of Jack The Ripper
England has always been known for their elevated culture and afternoons fit for tea, but in the small
town of Whitechapel, London around 1888 this was not the case. Poverty played a big role during this
time period and mothers of small families had to prostitutes themselves in order to provide meals for
their families. Between August and November of 1888, a notorious murderer rose to the surface,
slaughtering at least five women escorts. The legend of Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous, yet
unsolved mysteries of English crime.
I. Suspected Murder Victims August 31, 1888, was the first killing, Mary Ann Nichols was found dead
on the side of a street at four o clock in the morning. She had been dead for approximately 20 minutes,
her throat had been slit, her abdomen mutilated with one deep jagged wound, several incisions across
the abdomen, and three or four similar cuts on the right side caused by the same knife at least 6 8
inches long used violently and downwards. There seemed to be surprise at the small amount of blood
at the crime scene, about enough to fill two large wine glasses, or half a pint at the most (Llewellyn).
This comment led to the suspicion that Nichols was not killed where her body was found, but the
blood from her wounds had soaked into her clothes and hair, and there was little doubt that she had
been killed at the crime scene by a swift slash to the throat. Death would have been instantaneous, and
the abdominal injuries, which would have

Essay about Sexual Tolerance of Gays in the Military
Sexual Tolerance of Gays in the Military
In 1999, more than 1,000 men and women were discharged from military service due to their
sexuality. That number has actually decreased compared to recent years. (Suro NP) Homosexuals were
purged from federal employment in 1950, with Bill Clinton updating that policy in 1993 by adding the
Don t Ask, Don t Tell, Don t Pursue policy. (Deicher 176) This policy doesn t work and needs to either
be updated again or the ban against homosexuals lifted. Gays should be allowed to fight for the
military for employment reasons, the right to fight for one s country, and because they are no different
from anyone else. The fact of the matter is that not even experts can argue in favor of keeping the ...

He said in his campaign that he would abolish the ban on gays in the military. When he said this, he
triggered a wave of homosexuals, previously in the armed forces, and currently enrolled at that time,
to state their homosexuality, and come out of the closet . With thousands of gays doing this in a span
of two years, Clinton s promise was shot out of reach. His only hope was to improve on the law
already in place, and he did so by adding the Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy in 1993. This policy made it
legal for homosexuals to be in the military, as long as they didn t state their sexuality. It also made it
against the law to ask openly if a person is a homosexual or not. The policy was supposed to be law
and obeyed, by everyone in the service.
This policy turned out to be a flop and wasn t taken very seriously, as the higher ranked officers did
not punish violators of the rule and some didn t abide by it themselves. So later on, the Don t Ask,
Don t Tell policy was modified to the Don t Ask, Don t Tell, Don t Pursue policy, to try and cut down
on violators of this law. This has been working to a point, but needs to be changed to teach and inform
all members of the army about gays and lesbians, and to also discipline quickly and severely the
members of the military that would be considered harassment, including verbal abuse, sometimes
known as gay bashing.
The U.S. Military provides a very extensive line of employment.

Socrates Views On Socrates
To question what no man has questioned before, that is what we praise Socrates for. Socrates
Philosophies grew out of his questioning of the social norm. Using this technique, he seems to always
focus on three main aspects: justice, virtue, and morality. Socrates claims that he has no wisdom. He
states, I know I have no wisdom, great or small. The world has an infinite number of possibilities and
anything he declares understanding, is extremely minimal compared to the possibilities that exist in
the world, there is so much out there that hasn t been exposed yet. Socrates had many thoughts and
ideas over things people never even took time to think about. He thought differently and always more
intensely than others. Socrates says that knowledge is essential to a person. He concluded that a
person s evil and wrong actions come from their ignorance and their failure to investigate. He was also
convinced that no one knowingly does wrong, if a person does not know what is right, then that
person will do wrong, but in the other hand, if the person knows what is right, they will most
definitely do right. He once mentioned that the unexamined life is not worth living introducing the
idea of Universal Definitions, meaning although individual things may vary and be constructed
differently the definitions of how they are similar, are permanent. The most important thing about
Socrates was the fact that he was a teacher. He taught anywhere and everywhere, he even went up to
people,

Analysis Of The New Jim Crow
Stories that go untold are often never heard and forgotten through time. The author of The New Jim
Crow, Michelle Alexander, by writing her book understandingly so went out of her way to document
the stories and pain of millions of minorities, whom in the land of the free are instead forced into
undoubtful imprisonment. Alexander has spent most of her life fighting racial injustice and teaching
about civil rights. A graduate from Stanford Law School and Vanderbilt University, Michelle
Alexander became a civil rights lawyer and legal scholar. She has dedicated her life to fighting the
racial bias in the criminal justice system and ending mass incarceration, devoting much of her time to
writing about and spreading the awareness of the racial caste system that we are currently in. In
addition, Alexander has spent several years as the director of the Racial Justice Project at the ACLU of
Northern California, which also lead a national campaign against racial profiling by law enforcement
(NewJimCrow.com). In her work, The New Jim crow, Alexander cautiously argues that from the
beginning of the United States all the way to its first foundations, can one find that the foundations
were layered upon a racial caste system to which just like the United States Constitution, can
essentially adapt overtime and exploit the original undercaste of minorities that were its earliest
victims; while her book is well supported through her informative use of historical facts and events,

The Great Salad Oil Swindle

is considered a classic in fraud auditing. The exposé was published in 1965 by Wall Street Journal
reporter Norman Miller and earned him a Pulitzer Prize, the highest achievement in American
journalism. The story of perpetrator Anthony De Angelis, known by his associates as Tino , is unique
because of the extreme disassociation from reality by all parties involved, which consequently created
the extraordinary opportunity necessary for a fraudster to evade being caught. The great magnitude of

disaster can transpire when these necessary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously, Tino s ego was bloated from the beginning and would be a large factor in the swindle he
would perpetrate two decades later. Spurred by increased responsibilities from marriage and the birth
of his son, Tino turned his enterprising mind into overdrive, founding M D Hog Cutters with borrowed
money. Unlike the candy store, Tino s new venture proved wildly successful. Incredibly, Tino had
turned a $2000 investment into $100,000 in the very first year. Tino was only twenty three years old,
and his ego was even larger. He claimed he was such a big shot that he was able to avoid the draft as
he was such an important pork supplier to the army and that he prospered greatly during the war
Anthony claimed that increased wealth didn t change his personal life, but allowed him to further his
charitable efforts. For example, Tino started giving away seeing eye dogs and bicycles (Miller 15). For
Tino, his success during the war was not because of his patriotic efforts in supplying the army with
pork. According to sources close to De Angelis at that time, Anthony s hog cutting company prospered
because it was built entirely on black market meat sales (Miller 16). Yet, Tino recounts his early
wealth as patriotic and charity driven. It is internal narratives such as these that reinforce the
rationalization for fraud. Typically, and as is seen many times from De Angelis story, a fraudster s ego
convinces them

For instance, half of all children can sit unsupported by the age of 6 months, while the majority, (90%)
can take up to 7 ½ months. What this means is that for accurate data we would need to observe theses
children multiple times to see the growth they are making.
How do we know infants can see at birth? They can t tell us. For this we depend on clues such as eye
movement, light sensitivity and the appearance of the eye. Though an infant s vision is present at birth
the strength of their vision is far from mature. However, vision develops rapidly in infants, going from
only being able to focus on images 4 to 30 inches away to a rapid ability to see details and shape
(Berger, 2014). By 3 months these same infants with immature ability can see patterns color and
motion. Surveys and medical research are regularly used to develop a better understanding of infant
development.
Children develop gross motor skills at different age norms which are affected by their culture and can
vary (Berger, 2014). In order to gain information, we need to educate and understand this
development, we have to conduct research. We are looking for new information and theories.
Although surveys are a great way to collect a large amount of data the information gained is only as

make that happen.

questionable for a widow whom has just found her husband murdered in their home. Melissa also

Compare And Contrast Merricat And Edward Scissorhands
John Bowen says, [a] genre isn t like a box in which a group of texts all neatly fit and can be safely
classified...it is more like a family. All family members don t look alike or have a single trait in
common but they have overlapping characteristics. The gothic genre is made to shock its readers and
induce strange thought. John Bowen compiled a list of characteristics that he has seen among great
works of Gothic literature. These characteristics include: strange places, clashing time periods, power
and constraint, terror vs. horror, and a world of doubt. In the case of We have always lived in the
Castle and Edward Scissorhands the family analogy works. These two works tell unrelated stories but

The clashing time periods does not apply to either of the stories. It can be argued that Merricat s living
situation does not obviously indicate what time period she is living in. The only indication is when she
goes out into town. However, it s not significant enough to be considered clashing time periods.
Edward s situation was not a clash of time periods but rather discrepancies in what is in fashion; like
the waterbed, for example. Next in Bowen s characteristics, comes the terror versus horror
characteristic. We have always lived in the Castle fits this characteristic very well. Merricat is
responsible for her family s death and is responsible for the house catching fire. We have always lived
in the Castle fits very well into the terror versus horror characteristic. Edward Scissorhands doesn t
quite fit into that mold. Even though Edward kills Jim, he did it because he was defending himself and
Kim; it was not because that was his intention during the whole movie. Bowen s last characteristic is a
world of doubt; this gives the reader the idea that there is more than human knowledge/ power. This is
the case in Edward Scissorhands; he is a character who was created with scissor hands by an inventor.

Analysis Of The Other Side Of The Sky By Farah Ahmedi
Farah Ahmedi was a girl who was desperate to escape her war torn country of Afghanistan by crossing
the border into Pakistan. Annie Johnson was a fierce woman who wanted to support her family by
starting an intricate business that cooks meals for factory workers. The next mission missionary was
Theodore Boone who was a 13 year old boy who wanted to prevent a bypass from being built through

into Pakistan from Afghanistan. The story The Other Side of The Sky, elaborates on this statement by
describing Farah Ahmedi s life, the author states, Their only hope was to escape to Pakistan (para. 3).
This quote explains that Farah Ahmedi did not want to leave the country out of her own choice, it was
a necessary decision. Her country was war torn, so she and her mom had no choice. After the very
difficult and treacherous journey to cross the border through the mountains on the border, and four
years in Pakistan, Farah and her mother were finally chosen to come to America. A quote from an

displeasure at England s progress, and that a godly reform of the nation s morals was urgently
required. During August and September 1655, Cromwell worked with John Lambert, John Disbrowe
and Sir Gilbert Pickering to finalise arrangements for the new system the rule of major generals . The
Major Generals were formally commissioned on 11 October 1655 and proclaimed on 31 October. The
country was divided into 12 regions, each governed by a Major General who was answerable only to
the Lord Protector. While the Major Generals were successful in law enforcement and in curbing
security threats to the Protectorate their attempts at reforming the nation s morals varied from region
to region according to the zeal of individual officers, but had no lasting effects. Cromwell himself was
aware of the unpopularity of military government and seems to have given tacit support to those who
opposed its renewal. The system was abandoned early in 1657 under a new constitution: the Humble
Petition and Advice.
These failures all added greatly to the eventual failure of the interregnum however there were religious
factors which added to the failure as well; the Penruddock uprising was a royalist uprising which was
able to knock the confidence of the protector although it was dealt with quickly and efficiently by
Oliver Cromwell it made him

Surcharge Essay
The process is done by simply placing a surcharge fill on top of the soil that requires consolidation.
The excess load is referred to as surcharge load. The load must be placed in several stages so as to
prevent instability. Once the predicted consolidation is achieved, the fill can be removed and
construction can be started. Surcharge which was installed as a temporary load, can be removed when
the settlements exceed the foretold final settlement. Normally this is done only after the remaining
excess pore water pressure becomes less than the stress increase caused by the temporary surcharge. If
the surcharge is higher than the work load, the soil will always be in an over consolidated state.
The secondary compression for over consolidated soil is much smaller than that of normally
consolidated soil. The secondary settlement can be reduced or even eliminated either by increasing the
time of temporary overloading or by using a heavier overload.
Advantages of preloading:
Equipment cost is less since only conventional earthmoving equipment is needed.
Any contractor can perform the work, as specialized knowledge in not required.
Consolidation can be accelerated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally this technique requires the application of a surcharge loading to squeeze water out of the
soft clay soils. Such loading must be equal to or in excess of the service loading to which the
developed land will be subjected. In vacuum consolidation, the vacuum pressure applied contributes to
the surcharge loading, an actual surcharge heights are reduced. An additional important advantage of
the vacuum is the isotropic nature of the vacuum pressure and the correlated improvement of the
stability under preloading, reducing considerably the risk of slope failure resulting from the

  • 2. Republican Party Model Analysis The next set of models changes the dependent variable to national party strength. There has long been a disagreement over the manner of the shift in party strength. Some have argued that the realignment of southern politics started with a top down approach. Others argue that the realignment was fueled by success down ballot, which led to ambitious Republican politicians seeking and finding success higher up the ballot. Besides the change in the dependent variable, there is also a change to models 4 and 5 by adding the state party index to the model. This will allow a test of the top down/bottom up question on the southern realignment. Because of the controversy relating to this topic, any significant finding will assist in explaining this important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We do find that using our all encompassing Major Party Index, which the interaction worked just as expected. When we broke that index into parts to look at the role of that interaction on elections to state and federal office, we found that the expected relationship between income and the decline in agriculture just did not occur. This baffling finding provides more questions that need answered, but we have little to go on in determining that answer. The positive findings for the first three models does provided evidence not just that southerners adjusted their voting due to changes in the economy, particularly rising incomes. Instead we see that voters did for at least some voting decisions, take into account changes in the structure of the economic system itself. The problem is that the findings do not hold when we look at party strength for elections to state offices and national offices. It is confusing how party strength itself can be significant but its components are not. The implications of that finding is obviously large but it is tempered by the lack of significance across all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Literature Review On Atrial Fibrillation Atrial fibrillation is a common chronic condition, occurring in approximately three million people in the United States (American College of Cardiology, 2015). It can lead to serious complications such as blood clots, stroke, or heart failure (American College of Cardiology, 2015). Therefore, healthcare providers must understand how to manage new onset and chronic atrial fibrillation. Patients may present to the emergency department with atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response in both new onset and chronic cases. There are different choices of treatment for atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response. For instance, healthcare providers can choose a rate controlling medication such as metoprolol or diltiazem. Or they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This article is current because it was published just last year. Links provided in the works cited pages are functional. Since the research article directly addresses the PICO question, it is relevant. The researchers have authority since many of them have written additional research articles. Cogitating that other references have supported the claims made by the authors, this article is accurate (Gettysburg College, 2016) The main limitation of this study was the design. Researchers were unable to randomize the groups. Furthermore, they were unable to detect subgroups (Hines et. al., 2016). They didn t get to directly interview patients. Another limitation was the setting of the study because it is a teaching hospital. Finally, the researchers were unable to demonstrate the length of research because they only used two snapshots of information. The major conclusion of this study was that there is no difference in effectiveness between metoprolol and diltiazem. However, researchers found that healthcare providers were more apt to choose medications found in patient s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Ed Grabianowski, the prohibition of the 1920 s increased the demand for moonshine. This increased the number of people making moonshine for a living. • 6. Museum Of Art Analysis My little legs shuffled along as tried to catch up to my mother, taking the marble staircase two steps at a time. Why is she so excited, I thought to myself. She slowed down as we entered a tall room, colors and frames and canvases lined along the walls. I followed behind with an unimpressed glare across my face and mumbles upon my lips: Why do we always have to come to the art museum. I had seen more art than any other twelve year old I knew. In fact, at the time I was fairly certain that I had seen more art than anyone I knew. She shushed me as we stepped into a small, dark room tucked away in the corner of the museum. The U.S. steel industry continues to face formidable competition globally, especially from a costing, supply chain, and procurement perspective. The intensity of this competition is forcing many steel producers to look for greater efficiencies form their own operations. One of the most effective continues to be the streamlining how product, project, and process information to create a unified system of record which can be used for knowledge management (Armstrong, 2008). From an analysis of the readings in Using GIS Technology for Document and Asset Management (Armstrong, 2008) it is apparent that visual representation of information and knowledge taxonomies across the various locations of a U.S. Steel manufacturing plant are invaluable in increasing efficiency and performance. These manufacturing centers often rely on a very broad set of content based sources, information and knowledge all used for keeping each production machine running efficiently while also ensuring that the steel mill workers have the information they need to do their jobs. Definition of Earnings Management Healy and Wahlen (1999) define earnings management as: Earnings management occurs when managers use judgement in financial reporting and in structuring transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some stakeholders about the underlying economic performance of the company or to influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported accounting numbers. Another definition is given by Fields et al. (2001) who state that: Earnings management occurs when managers exercise their discretion over accounting numbers with or without restrictions. Such discretion can be either firm value maximizing or opportunistic . The above definitions highlight the point that managerial intent is a criterion for earnings management (Spohr 2005). Several academic literatures seek to point out the activities which can be considered to be earnings management. However, as the definition of earnings management does not rely on any one item of the income statement, it does not need to be directly connected to reported earnings. Its impact is through accounting numbers and may also be directed at financial ratios as opposed to earnings (Schipper 1989). • 28. The Legend Of Jack The Ripper England has always been known for their elevated culture and afternoons fit for tea, but in the small town of Whitechapel, London around 1888 this was not the case. Poverty played a big role during this time period and mothers of small families had to prostitutes themselves in order to provide meals for their families. Between August and November of 1888, a notorious murderer rose to the surface, slaughtering at least five women escorts. The legend of Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous, yet unsolved mysteries of English crime. I. Suspected Murder Victims August 31, 1888, was the first killing, Mary Ann Nichols was found dead on the side of a street at four o clock in the morning. She had been dead for approximately 20 minutes, her throat had been slit, her abdomen mutilated with one deep jagged wound, several incisions across the abdomen, and three or four similar cuts on the right side caused by the same knife at least 6 8 inches long used violently and downwards. There seemed to be surprise at the small amount of blood at the crime scene, about enough to fill two large wine glasses, or half a pint at the most (Llewellyn). This comment led to the suspicion that Nichols was not killed where her body was found, but the blood from her wounds had soaked into her clothes and hair, and there was little doubt that she had been killed at the crime scene by a swift slash to the throat. (Suro NP) Homosexuals were purged from federal employment in 1950, with Bill Clinton updating that policy in 1993 by adding the Don t Ask, Don t Tell, Don t Pursue policy. (Deicher 176) This policy doesn t work and needs to either be updated again or the ban against homosexuals lifted. He said in his campaign that he would abolish the ban on gays in the military. When he said this, he triggered a wave of homosexuals, previously in the armed forces, and currently enrolled at that time, to state their homosexuality, and come out of the closet . With thousands of gays doing this in a span of two years, Clinton s promise was shot out of reach. His only hope was to improve on the law already in place, and he did so by adding the Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy in 1993. This policy made it legal for homosexuals to be in the military, as long as they didn t state their sexuality. It also made it against the law to ask openly if a person is a homosexual or not. The policy was supposed to be law and obeyed, by everyone in the service. This policy turned out to be a flop and wasn t taken very seriously, as the higher ranked officers did not punish violators of the rule and some didn t abide by it themselves. So later on, the Don t Ask, Don t Tell policy was modified to the Don t Ask, Don t Tell, Don t Pursue policy, to try and cut down on violators of this law. This has been working to a point, but needs to be changed to teach and inform all members of the army about gays and lesbians, and to also discipline quickly and severely the members of the military that would be considered harassment, including verbal abuse, sometimes known as gay bashing. • 30. Socrates Views On Socrates To question what no man has questioned before, that is what we praise Socrates for. Socrates Philosophies grew out of his questioning of the social norm. Using this technique, he seems to always focus on three main aspects: justice, virtue, and morality. Socrates claims that he has no wisdom. He states, I know I have no wisdom, great or small. The world has an infinite number of possibilities and anything he declares understanding, is extremely minimal compared to the possibilities that exist in the world, there is so much out there that hasn t been exposed yet. Socrates had many thoughts and ideas over things people never even took time to think about. He thought differently and always more intensely than others. Socrates says that knowledge is essential to a person. He concluded that a person s evil and wrong actions come from their ignorance and their failure to investigate. He was also convinced that no one knowingly does wrong, if a person does not know what is right, then that person will do wrong, but in the other hand, if the person knows what is right, they will most definitely do right. He once mentioned that the unexamined life is not worth living introducing the idea of Universal Definitions, meaning although individual things may vary and be constructed differently the definitions of how they are similar, are permanent. The author of The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander, by writing her book understandingly so went out of her way to document the stories and pain of millions of minorities, whom in the land of the free are instead forced into undoubtful imprisonment. Alexander has spent most of her life fighting racial injustice and teaching about civil rights. She has dedicated her life to fighting the racial bias in the criminal justice system and ending mass incarceration, devoting much of her time to writing about and spreading the awareness of the racial caste system that we are currently in. In addition, Alexander has spent several years as the director of the Racial Justice Project at the ACLU of Northern California, which also lead a national campaign against racial profiling by law enforcement (NewJimCrow.com). In her work, The New Jim crow, Alexander cautiously argues that from the beginning of the United States all the way to its first foundations, can one find that the foundations were layered upon a racial caste system to which just like the United States Constitution, can essentially adapt overtime and exploit the original undercaste of minorities that were its earliest victims; while her book is well supported through her informative use of historical facts and events, her ... The story of perpetrator Anthony De Angelis, known by his associates as Tino , is unique because of the extreme disassociation from reality by all parties involved, which consequently created the extraordinary opportunity necessary for a fraudster to evade being caught. Unlike the candy store, Tino s new venture proved wildly successful. Incredibly, Tino had turned a $2000 investment into $100,000 in the very first year. Tino was only twenty three years old, and his ego was even larger. For example, Tino started giving away seeing eye dogs and bicycles (Miller 15). For Tino, his success during the war was not because of his patriotic efforts in supplying the army with pork. According to sources close to De Angelis at that time, Anthony s hog cutting company prospered because it was built entirely on black market meat sales (Miller 16). For this we depend on clues such as eye movement, light sensitivity and the appearance of the eye. Though an infant s vision is present at birth the strength of their vision is far from mature. However, vision develops rapidly in infants, going from only being able to focus on images 4 to 30 inches away to a rapid ability to see details and shape (Berger, 2014). By 3 months these same infants with immature ability can see patterns color and motion. Surveys and medical research are regularly used to develop a better understanding of infant development. Children develop gross motor skills at different age norms which are affected by their culture and can vary (Berger, 2014). In order to gain information, we need to educate and understand this development, we have to conduct research. We are looking for new information and theories. Although surveys are a great way to collect a large amount of data the information gained is only as sound as the subject. This is why we need other avenues for research, and we need parental support to make that happen.

All family members don t look alike or have a single trait in common but they have overlapping characteristics. The gothic genre is made to shock its readers and induce strange thought. John Bowen compiled a list of characteristics that he has seen among great works of Gothic literature. These characteristics include: strange places, clashing time periods, power and constraint, terror vs. horror, and a world of doubt. It can be argued that Merricat s living situation does not obviously indicate what time period she is living in. The only indication is when she goes out into town. However, it s not significant enough to be considered clashing time periods. Edward s situation was not a clash of time periods but rather discrepancies in what is in fashion; like the waterbed, for example. Next in Bowen s characteristics, comes the terror versus horror characteristic. We have always lived in the Castle fits this characteristic very well. Merricat is responsible for her family s death and is responsible for the house catching fire. We have always lived in the Castle fits very well into the terror versus horror characteristic. Edward Scissorhands doesn t quite fit into that mold. Even though Edward kills Jim, he did it because he was defending himself and Kim; it was not because that was his intention during the whole movie. Bowen s last characteristic is a world of doubt; this gives the reader the idea that there is more than human knowledge/ power. The first factor that I will address is the political failures that assisted in the failure of the interregnum period. The Major Generals were formally commissioned on 11 October 1655 and proclaimed on 31 October. The country was divided into 12 regions, each governed by a Major General who was answerable only to the Lord Protector. While the Major Generals were successful in law enforcement and in curbing security threats to the Protectorate their attempts at reforming the nation s morals varied from region to region according to the zeal of individual officers, but had no lasting effects. Cromwell himself was aware of the unpopularity of military government and seems to have given tacit support to those who opposed its renewal. The system was abandoned early in 1657 under a new constitution: the Humble Petition and Advice. These failures all added greatly to the eventual failure of the interregnum however there were religious factors which added to the failure as well; the Penruddock uprising was a royalist uprising which was able to knock the confidence of the protector although it was dealt with quickly and efficiently by Oliver Cromwell it made him ... • 43. Surcharge Essay The process is done by simply placing a surcharge fill on top of the soil that requires consolidation. The excess load is referred to as surcharge load. The load must be placed in several stages so as to prevent instability. Once the predicted consolidation is achieved, the fill can be removed and construction can be started. Surcharge which was installed as a temporary load, can be removed when the settlements exceed the foretold final settlement. Normally this is done only after the remaining excess pore water pressure becomes less than the stress increase caused by the temporary surcharge. If the surcharge is higher than the work load, the soil will always be in an over consolidated state. The secondary compression for over consolidated soil is much smaller than that of normally consolidated soil. The secondary settlement can be reduced or even eliminated either by increasing the time of temporary overloading or by using a heavier overload.
