Crane, as evidenced by his interest in the military, did not object to war, but rather, Casey writes, to

men was both soft and ignorant of the world s brutality, and since they had not been exposed to war,

Randle McMurphy is moved from a prison to a mental institute and thinks that the rules will be

thought as the nurse of the psychiatric ward, Nurse Ratched, is very strict and keeps the patients
in order by abusing them, medicating them, and electrocuting them. McMurphy does not like the
way Nurse Ratched runs the psychiatric ward and all throughout the time that he is there, he
rebels against her commands. McMurphy s rebellious actions cause many conflicts in the ward
and harm on the other patients and himself. One particular night, McMurphy sneaks two women
into the psychiatric ward and they throw a party that goes on all throughout the night. This
party causes a lot of damage not only to the building itself, but to the workers and patients at the
ward. The night watchman of the ward, Mr. Turkle gets in trouble for allowing the women to
come into the ward. That night, Billy sleeps with Candy, one of the women that snuck into the
ward. The next day when Nurse Ratched came into work, she had seen and heard of what Billy
had done and threatened to tell his mother. The workers at the ward then locked Billy into a
room and while he in there, Billy killed himself. In addition to these effects of the party,
McMurphy was punished by getting electrocuted to the point where he could no longer function.
McMurphy s friend, Chief, sees that he can no longer function and does not want him to suffer

Aerodynamics is known as the study of the different forces acting on an object and the resulting
motion of objects as they fly through the air. Today we know that aerodynamicsplays a major role

Like the drag, the amount of lift depends on several factors related to the barometric conditions
of the air and the shape of the object. Additionally the velocity of the object and its relationship
with the air plays a role as well. For a spinning ball, the speed of rotation affects the magnitude of
the aerodynamic force and the direction of the force is perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
The orientation of the axis of rotation or spin axis can be varied by the pitcher when the ball is
thrown. If the axis is vertical, the lift force is horizontal and the ball can be made to curve to one
side. If the axis is horizontal, the lift force is vertical and the ball can be made to dive or rise
depending on the direction of rotation.

In the works Let the Great World Spin, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jazz, and The Help,
the portrayals of African Americans reinforce established racial stereotypes. Dorcas and the
prostitutes represent the jezebel; the absent male is viewed and reinforced through the perspectives
of Violet, Golden Gray, and even Minny; Aibileen and Minny represent the mammies, and in a way,
Jim is Huck s mammy too. While there are instances in all four novels of characters challenging
stereotypes, these characters primarily reinforce racial stereotypes.
The jezebel represents a female character who is sexually promiscuous and very sexualized. In
Jazz, by Toni Morrison, Dorcas aligns closely with the jezebel description. Dorcas wants to detach
Minny is described by the narrator as 33, black, plump and in uniform, rolls her eyes beneath a
crystal chandelier. She shouts up the mahogany stairwell (Stockett 6). The mammy character also
represents a female character who is sassy and not a threat to the household s male. Aibileen is
older than Minny, and her relatives before her were also housemaids who worked for white
families. Aibileen says: I know how to get them babies asleep, stop cryin and go in the toilet bowl
before they mommas even get outta bed in the mornin (Stockett 2). In The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, the character who resembles the mammy the closest is
Jim. While Jim s physical description is not that of a mammy, his mentality is. From different
perspectives, Jim is Huck s mammy because of his guidance, superstitions, and parental like
figure all attributes of a mammy. Jim says: Lemme look at you chile, lemme feel o you. No, you
ain t dead! you s back again, live and soun, jis de same ole Huck de same ole Huck, thanks to
goodness! (Twain 325). Jim s parental like concern for Huck is similar to that of a nanny, and
specifically of Aibileen s, who cares very much for Mae Mobley. Three characters in particular,
