three electoral votes. Two being the senators each state has and one being a representative in the
House of Representatives. This was to make sure every state has a fair and equal representation in

they should, but their vote doesn t count. The citizen s vote is called the popular vote and basically
does nothing because the vote that does matter is the electoral vote. The electoral should be abolished

I have chosen to examine Irving Goffman s contributions to the theory of social stigma, specifically
through the perspectives presented in Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. My
analysis of this work leads me to imagine communication as a mask, possessing the ability to shield
the wearer s actual social identity from observers.
This metaphor has utility because it provides a concrete way to conceptualize a portion of the complex
web of presentation and interpretations that accompany communicative interaction with an individual
who is perceived to have an attribute that positions them as significantly other. When I originally
proposed communication as a mask, I was envisioning the mask as noise designed to act as a barrier to
communication. However, once I became aware of Goffman s work, I realized that this particular
conception of communication provides specific advantages for the stigmatized in a way that
acknowledges the constant vigilance and level of effort that a stigmatized individual must put forth in
order to engage with a normal without revealing their attribute. Thus, I have chosen this perspective
because it disturbed my default understanding of communication as an exchange between two
normals. It may enable those who use it to develop insight into the experiences of those who perceive
communicative interactions differently then themselves.

In the short story The Locket, it is believed that the author Chaplains writing style has kept the readers
guessing throughout the story. Many would agree that the ending of the story was a shocker and few
expected that conclusion. They would agree that the father in law proceeding with the funeral
arrangements supporting the assumption the deceased person in the coffin was Edmund because he
had the locket around his neck played into the authors plot twist. People would also say that the end of
the story was intriguing, especially when Octavia opened the letter from the priest, returning her
locket to her expressing his sorrow of the death of her husband Edmund. Only to find out at the very
end Edmund was not dead and he was waiting for her at the door.
In the conclusion of the story, many would say they didn t really know what was going to happen in
the end of the book. Chaplain threw a curve ball and surprised all at the ending of the story. The writer
did a very good job of confusing readers that the man at the campfire that died was Edmund. Allowing
everyone to conclude even the priest character played into this misdirection that Edmund was dead.

Currently while reading, it is safe to say the main protagonist of the novel is trying to escape his past
life by leaving behind everything he s known for a new adventure featuring new people. Already he
has tried to fit in by being something he is not. It is evident through his speech versus his thoughts.
Short term events could consist of him changing who he is to fit into the current way of life he has
walked into. Long term events could consist of the adventure he has with the new people he has met.
He begins to fall for a taken girl amongst it all, but never voices his feelings for her. In the future the
most important events could involve the girl and the lessons he learns along the way based on what is
right compared to what is wrong.
