Wages of Crime by R. T Naylor
Introduction:
Wages of Crime: Black Markets, Illegal Finance, and the Underworld Economy is a book by R. T.
Naylor based on his views of organized crime and the government s stance and involvement. Naylor
writes from a mostly democratic point of view and presents his thesis quite clearly. Naylor s thesis in
this book is that organized crime is a convenient myth handed to society by the government. In this
book Naylor sets up four important concepts: first on the black market operations of guerrilla groups,
second on the modern arms market, then on money laundering, and finally the underworld trade in
gold. Throughout the book he talks about the critique of the public perceptions of organized crime, a
discussion of anti money laundering policies, and an analysis of terrorist financing.
Summery
At the start of his second chapter Naylor sets up the difference between the motives of insurgent
groups versus criminal groups. Naylor claims Criminals commit economic crimes to make money.
(pg. 45) and that is where motivation ends for them. The difference between insurgent groups is,
money is merely a tool one that is necessary but not sufficient to achieve. Like the formally
constituted governments they challenge, insurgent groups have political programs...they have control
over armed forces, and they directly compete with the state for territory, population, and resources.
(pg. 45) A parallel economy is then created by the guerrilla groups to supply the population with what

The Usa Patriot Act By John Walker
Nonetheless, the alarm of the terrorists ought not to make Americans surrender their lifestyle.
Americans ought not to be compelled to yield what our nation is glad for, including majority rules
system and opportunity of representation. On account of the University of California San Diego
(UCSD) organization banning the connection to the terrorist site, the USA Patriot Act was translated
mistakenly. Their choice to boycott the hyperlink was an infringement of the right to speak freely. A
connection to a site ought not to be seen as correspondences gear.
Americans, clearly, have a privilege to be worried about terrorists. In sympathy toward the Americans
own wellbeing, the USA Patriot Act was passed with great reason. It ought to stay ... Show more

Then again, the UCSD understudies pay for the right to gain entrance, accordingly providing for them
their own particular rights to the right to gain entrance and how they utilize it. In the event that the
colleges were giving the server access to the understudies free of charge, then it would be an alternate
story. Yet, since the understudies are paying for the right to gain entrance, they get rights through the
exchange. Case in point, the vast majority would concur that the college would not be permitted to
preclude understudies from connecting to a site which condemned the college. In spite of the fact that,
if UCSD contended that they claim the server and they can confine their clients however they see fit,
how is this contention not the same as the case close by?
The Americans dread of terrorists ought not to make them surrender what their nation is about. The
United States is about vote based system and opportunity of articulation. There is no compelling
reason to yield flexibility of statement with a specific end goal to stop the terrorism. Regardless of the
fact that the terrorism is decreased on the grounds that individuals were eager to surrender their own
particular rights, then the US will wind up with an alternate real issue which could adversely influence
the nation considerably more. That issue would be that the flexibility of declaration would be
significantly more confined. In the event that higher

RICK, WHERE ARE YOU! Nick hollered into the vast empty forest with a strained look on his face.
His voice was not heard by a single soul worldwide... Rick and Nick were inseparable. Ever since they
were born they did everything together. They met in the hospital just after they were born. Nick was
born beautifully with no problems at twenty inches long and eight pounds. His parents had an amazed
satisfied smile on their face. However, in the room across the hall, about ten doctors huddled around
Rick s mother in bed. MOTHER DOWN! MOTHER DOWN! OPEN UP OPERATION ROOM ONE!

Benjamin Zander The Transformative Power Of Classical...
Benjamin Zander: The Transformative Power of Classical Music
In Benjamin Zander s TED talk, he educates individuals on his main message which is to teach
everyone the power of classical music, however, also covers many important and knowledgeable
lessons that we can gather.
Benjamin Zander states that a good leader is one who trusts the capacity of the people he/she is
working with to turn the leader s vision into a reality. A leader who doesn t doubt or show any
uncertainty about his team fosters a positive environment with motivated individuals who are
confident and have the drive to make the leader s vision a reality. In the past, there are several leaders
who trusted others and were successful in completing their objective such as Nelson Mandela,
Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. As Ben mentioned in the talk, if Martin Luther King
had not sounded absolutely confident or if he had shown any doubt while giving his I Have A Dream
speech, then the people part of the movement would not have been as motivated or confident to
continue the movement. Hence, it is crucial for leaders to be confident and to trust the people that they
work with. In today s world, there are new issues that have come to light such as the inadequate
education for girls and women in third world countries, climate change, poverty, and political
instability. Since these issues impact everyone in the world either directly or indirectly, it is crucial for
leaders of this generation such as

Nature Versus Nurture Has Been A Big Debate In The Past
Nature versus nurture has been a big debate in the past few years. Debates and arguments from both
sides has its own statements which makes their side stronger. Some argue that it is in the genetics if a
person is intelligent where some state the opposite, that surroundings make a person intelligent which
improves them in a person mentally and physically. In the 1950s psychologist Harry Harlow studied
the effects of maternal deprivation on the development of baby monkeys. Some philosophers such as
Plato and Descartes suggested that certain things are inborn (Saul McLeod, 2007), or that they occur
naturally regardless of environmental influences. Other examples of nature debates were Bowlby s
1969 theory of attachment likewise Chomsky s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dizygotic twins show a higher correlation than their other siblings even when reared apart
supporting the theory that nature does have a major influence on human intelligence. Nurture
intelligence is another factor which is still unfolded. Some believe that upbringing a child in a proper
environment can effect their mood, body and their views towards to world. If someone s brought up in
an environment where he or she gets all the facilities and necessities of daily life, it will help through
the entire life, in saying that if the person receives the correct surroundings, family support, supportive
friends circle, it can help them throughout the journey of life. Family habits, interests and company of
good people as mentioned above will leave a significant effect on the person s development. The
nature theory holds the genetic influence over abstract traits however, the environmental factors are
the real origins of our behaviour. We want to be according to the environment around us. At the end
we are still confused which way is right nature or nurture since both sides have valid reasons to be
right. Some traits come to us by genes and some we experience through travelling and experiencing
different situations in our lifetime, which is a proven fact. Nurture helps shape our intelligence in the
sense that what surrounds us is what we end up liking and

How Did Shakespeare Influence Sir Francis Drake
Famous Influences Throughout William Shakespeare s life, the Sixteenth Century encompassed an
overpowering need for new ideas and different opinions. Also, culture flourished within the
civilization of Europe. Not only did Shakespeare change the way people viewed plays, he also lived
among notable contemporaries. During the Sixteenth Century, many famous artists and explorers
presented themselves and influenced the people around them. A few people during Shakespeare s life
still make an impact through their impressive accomplishments. Three famous people who lived
during the Shakespearean Era were Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I, and Galileo Galilei. Initially,
Sir Francis Drake travelled the world as a renowned explorer. Born in the 1540s, Francis Drake
discovered his love for exploring during his teenage years. By 1577, a captain volunteered him as the
leader of an expedition which passed around South America, through the Strait of Magellan, and into
the untouched coast beyond. After a triumphant return, Queen Elizabeth I knighted him, and Sir
Francis Drake soon became popular throughout Europe. One of his more ... Show more content on

Theories about the Dissapearance of the Neanderthal Essay
The Neanderthals lived in areas ranging from Western Europe through central Asia from about
200,000 to between 36,000 and 24,000 years ago. The Neanderthals lived in groups of 30 to 50
individuals, they invented many of the tool types that were to be perfected by fully sapient peoples,
they had weapons adequate to deal with both the cave lion and cave bear, they used body paint, buried
their dead. Neanderthal Man survived through the Ice Age. They are thought to have had fire.
Neanderthals lived side by side with modern humans for over 10,000 years.
There are many theories on why the Neanderthals disappeared. Most of them involve Homo Sapiens
in one way or another, considering that the Neanderthal s extinction coincides with the early ... Show

Although this theory is plausible, it is not probable, considering that the Neanderthals lived in close
proximity to modern man for so long. Still, it is possible that there was a disease, which caused the
Neanderthals to die out.
The last theory states that Neanderthals were not in fact a separate species, but interbred to a greater or
lesser extent with the incoming Homo sapiens, whose genes eventually became dominant at the
eventual expense of the genes delivering Neanderthal characteristics. This hypothesis comes from the
fact that Neanderthals and Cro Magnons inhabited the same regions of Europe for thousands of years.
It is not beyond a doubt that they did come in contact with one another, possibly even trading and
communicating.
Neanderthals and modern humans became one species, through thousands of years of interbreeding.
Supporters of this theory state that some modern day Europeans have facial features similar to
Neanderthal man. Neanderthal genes may have been inserted into the human gene pool, and Human
genes may have been added to the Neanderthals. At this point, Neanderthals and humans may have
evolved together at an incredible rate, becoming one race in a relatively short period of time. On the
other hand, a disease, a war, or an increase in population causing the natural resources to be
inadequate for keeping so many hominids alive might have cut off Neanderthals suddenly from
contact with the humans,

Switching At Thomas County Central High School
I am a volleyball player who was denied eligibility to play varsity volleyball at Thomas County
Central High School, because I switched schools sooner than a year ago. I understand that you along
with the rest of the GHSA board care about students not taking advantage of switching schools just to
be on an eye catching sports team. As a player, I respect this and thank you for keeping star athletes
from taking mine or my team mates spots on the team. It is also understandable that you along with
other GHSA board members may not think about school systems like ours that continuously have
people switching primarily because of the rigor of different school, such as me switching to TCCHS
from Thomasville High School Scholars Academy, because I simply could not keep up with the pace
and rigor that they teach with. After weighing out both points of view, transfers from any school
should be allowed to participate in varsity sports without having to wait a year from the time of
transferring to their new school. My thought out solution is to simply allow it, but have those athletes
only be able to play half of the season. The 50% that they get to play in the season would be talked out
between the coach, athlete, and the parents. Having this rule would be a good compromise between
not allowing transfers to play and allowing them. With this rule in place, athletes would be able to get
in their time to stand out, but they would not take away a lot of time from players who have

Executive Orders Essay
In Trump s first 11 days as president of the U.S. several executive orders and memoranda were signed
affecting millions of Americans. President memoranda and executive orders are both are documents
signed by the president directing the federal government to take action. They differ in the fact that
executive orders are immediately published in the federal register giving them instantaneous force of
law while memoranda is only published at the presidents choice making them non binding guidelines.
Arguably, President Trump s most controversial orders are Border Security And Immigration

Immigration from 7 majority Muslim countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and

the U.S. after traveling abroad. They were detained for hours and others were sent to their original

interpreter who worked for the U.S. government began to cry when speaking to reporters after 19
hours of detention (Michael D. Shear pg. 5). Many people who have no intentions of hurting America
are being affected. Refugees of war stricken countries who were already approved to arrive in the
united states are now worried about their future. Students and work professionals who were only
coming to help America are unable to. Detaining skilled people entry will only hurt America s

America s foundational beliefs. Singling out people based on religious belief is similar to Hitler s

The Dietary Guidelines For Nutrition And Human Needs
According to the History of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans , In 1977 after years of scientific
review and controversy the US Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, led by
Senator George McGovern, recommended Dietary Goals for the American people (US Senate Select
Committee, 1977). The Goals included complementary nutrient based and food based
recommendations. The first goal aim attention at energy balance and urged that, to prevent
overweight, Americans should endure only as much energy as they are necessary. Overweight
Americans should consume less energy and expend more energy. For the nutrient based Goals, the
Senate Committee recommended Americans, boost their consumption of complex carbohydrates and
naturally occurring sugars; and make less consumption of refined and processed sugars, total fat,
saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium (1).) The beginning of the Dietary Goals encounter debates and
controversy, as industry groups and the scientific community expressed questioning that the science
available at the time supported the specificity of the numbers provided in the Dietary Goals. To
support the credibility of the science used by the Committee, the US Department of Agriculture and
US Department of Health and Human Services (then called the Department of Health, Education, and
Welfare) scientists from the two Departments acquire additional expertise from the scientific
community throughout the country to address the public s need for

The Cost Of The Asset
Under generally accepted accounting principles, assets both tangible and certain intangible assets that
have an estimated useful life of more than one year but not infinitely should be allocated and
depreciated, amortized or depleted. The cost of the asset needs to be determined as well as any
possible salvage or resale value estimated. The total cost of an asset needs to not only include the
purchase price of the item but also sales taxes, installation costs, freight and interest (if applicable).
Costs currently or that are incurred in the future for maintenance and repairs is only an expense and
does not change the value of the asset. Basically, all costs that were necessary to allow the asset to
become useful should be capitalized. Depreciation, amortization and depletion are acceptable methods
used under U.S. GAAP to charge the cost of an asset used in a company s day to day operations to
expense over the periods benefited systematically. Depreciation refers to prorating tangible and
intangible asset s cost less any salvage value evenly over the useful life of the asset. For an item to be
considered an asset, it must intended for operations of the business and not for resale. Useful life
should be reasonable but can vary from one asset to another from one view point to another. Estimated
useful life is the time period in which an asset is expected to contribute to usefulness to a company.
Not all assets will have salvage value. With the exception of land, all assets are

a cancer death rate about 35% higher than whites and the death rate for cancer in black men is almost

Payroll Taxes Essay
Payroll taxes first appeared numerous years ago and have since evolved, grown, and underwent major
changes. Payroll taxes are taxes that are paid by employers and their employees. Payroll taxes are
collected by the federal, state, and local governments to fund certain programs or projects. The
employee s tax proportion is typically deducted from the employee s wages every earning period, and
the employer fraction of the payroll taxes are paid directly by the employer and are based upon their
employee s wages. The amount of payroll taxes that must be paid are required to be reported to the
Internal Revenue Service and the employer s state and local taxing agencies. Smaller businesses tend
to lean towards independent contractors because the business is not required to pay taxes for
independent contractors. Independent contractors are considered self employed and are responsible for
the employee as well as the employer portion of payroll taxes. Whenever a business falls behind in
reporting payroll taxes or paying the taxes to the IRS, there are consequences. The IRS can attach a

A common theme noticed in the architectural history of Rome is the use of arches. Whether used for
their quality and bolster, or raised for their fancy magnificence, evidence of ancient Rome s love for
the arch has lasted throughout history. One of the more famous employments of curves in Roman
building design is found in the Roman aqueduct system. A fascinating waterway system designed to
carry fresh water from the surrounding highlands into the heart of the city, the aqueduct system was
considered highly advanced for its time. The invention and use of aqueducts helped to shape the

Chinese Political History Essay
Chinese political history harkening back to dynastic rule recalls notions of a highly centralized
government, a bloated and corrupt bureaucracy, and the limited power of commoners to significantly
change their circumstances, much less how they are governed. With the introduction of political
reforms in recent years meant to fortify local governance by allowing the Chinese people to elect
officials, scholars have paid increased attention to the effectiveness of these local governments. In the

domination of male over female as well as the superior and subordinate roles of men and women,
respectively.4 Fairbank and Goldman (2006) posit that the inferior social status of women was merely
one manifestation of the hierarchic nature of China s entire social code and cosmology and that an
endless succession of Chinese male moralists worked out the behavior pattern of obedience and
passivity that was expected of women. 5 When these ideas are applied to the contemporary times, the
current state of women s political viability in China makes much more sense. The longstanding social
implications surrounding women s roles in relation to men makes them less desirable as leaders, and
their limitations once they

Examples Of Alienation In Miss Brill
The need to belong
Humans are social animals and according to the ancient rules that are still running our bodies and
minds, we still depend on others for intimacy and human connection as mental food and social support
to live a healthy life. Alienation provokes in us some of the worst feelings in the world. The feeling of
being excluded or rejected incites emotional distress that often gets compared to, or even described as
actual physical pain. Social alienation has a negative impact on our lives, exposing us to feelings of
loneliness, helplessness, inadequacy and low self esteem, leading to dire physical, mental and
emotional consequences.
One perfect example to support this argument would be Katherine Mansfield s narrative Miss Brill . ...

Taking her old fashioned fox fur out of the box at the beginning of the story, Miss Brill sees it
reflecting her own feelings. What has been happening to me? , she hears it say. In reality, it is the very
question she has been asking herself for quite some time now, suffering through her loneliness and
plagued by depression, though still consciously unaware of these negative impacts of social alienation
in her life. Noting the condition of the fur, she gives it a good brush and polishes the dim eyes, even
considers masking its broken nose so it doesn t show its actual condition. This symbolizes the effort
she is putting into making herself mentally presentable to go out and mingle with people, desperately
trying to disregard and hide the gloominess of her mental state, caused by alienation and loneliness. At
the end of the story, crushed by rejection, she returns to her little dark cupboard room and frees herself
from the fur like removing a mask she was hiding too long behind: She unclasped the necklet quickly;
quickly, without looking, laid it inside. But when she put the lid on she thought she heard something
crying . By embracing the revelation of her loneliness, at last, she is allowing herself to grieve over the
reality of her

Tv Dbq
The first TV was created in 1927 by Philo Taylor Francisco, a regular man from Utah. It only had one
channel until 1936. Today the television has thousands of channels broadcasted 27/7. When first
created, seeing one was rare, and you were lucky to own one, today it is hard to leave the house and
not see one. This can affect a person negatively or positively. Using a publically involved example like
an election, the tv can be a great thing to pay attention to, because it provides information about the
two opposing candidates, it provides current polls and how each candidate is doing, and it also shows
how the people are handling it and their opinions.

Konoha the Fourth Hokage seals the fox inside his newborn son Naruto Uzumaki at the cost of his

allies. This results in a fourth great ninja war between the unified armies of the Five Great Countries
(collectively known as the Allied Shinobi Forces) and Akatsuki s forces of zombie like ninjas. Naruto,
and Killer Bee, the host of the Eight Tails, head for the battlefield refusing to sit back as instructed.
During the conflict, it is revealed that Tobi is actually Obito Uchiha, Kakashi s former teammate who
was thought to be dead, but he was saved by the real Madara and has been working with him ever
since. As Sasuke learns the history of Konoha, including the circumstances that led to his clan s
downfall, he decides to protect the village and rejoins Naruto and Sakura to stop Madara and Obito s
plans, which unleash the Ten Tails. However, Madara s body ends up possessed by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki,
an ancient princess who intends to subdue all of mankind, and a reformed Obito sacrifices himself to
help Team 7 stop her. Once Kaguya is sealed, Madara dies as well, but Sasuke takes advantage of the
situation and takes control all the Tailed Beasts to realize his true goal of ending the current village

Sasuke admits defeat and reforms. After the war, Kakashi is chosen to become the Sixth Hokage and

A Simple Barcoding System Has Changed Inventory Management...
Introduction Throughout history, a simple barcoding system has changed inventory management
forever. As the United States Postal Service required barcoding to make the mail sorting process more
efficient, grocery stores had a huge need to manage the quantities of thousands of items. As inventory
management evolved, the barcoding spread throughout supply chain management aiding in less waste,
storage costs, process tracking throughout the manufacturing processes, and helped improve customer
satisfaction. This short paper will go over how businesses have used barcoding, the history of
barcoding and some of the newer technologies like Radio Frequency Identification and Global
Positioning Systems.

For the purpose of this paper, it will steer away from most of the historical facts and stick with how
they tracked letters and packages. ( The history of the United States Postal Service, n.d.) After a
drastic increased demand for the postal services, the Post Office was looking towards technologies to
help it automate processes with postal sorters, address readers and an advanced coding system for the
times. By the 1970 s, the gained confidence in the service, demands increased even more. Again the
USPS had to reach out to the latest and greatest technologies. It was early in the 1980 s when the
USPS first purchased and used its first computer driven, single line Optical Character Reader (OCR)
which converted all of the data into a barcode. This became a huge money saver as forward post
offices only had to have a less expensive barcode sorting system. ( The history of the United States
Postal Service, n.d.) As technology aided in the efficiencies of the scanning processes, the USPS
started giving discounts to letters and packages that were pre barcoded. Having the letters pre
barcoded allowed for faster scanning, less manpower, and allowed the letters to bypass the OCR
scanners. By the year 2000, 59% of all letters were pre barcoded, a drastic increase of only 7% being
pre barcoded in 1990. By 2004, as technologies continued to improve and were able to now process

Detrimental Effects of Beauty Pageants
There is an ongoing debate on the detrimental effects that beauty pageants can have on their
contestants. Judged solely on physical beauty, beauty pageants have been around for quite some time.
The first pageant, the Miss America pageant, was held in 1921. Miss Universe and Miss USA soon
followed, and by the 1960 s beauty pageants were part of American culture. Viewed as a positive and
potentially rewarding competition, pageants have now recently had a drastic turn of view. Advocates
of beauty pageants put forth that beauty contests develop self esteem and confidence (Ending the
Hypersexualization of Girls). However, beauty pageants can be a highly destructive concept that can
put too much pressure on its contestants to look perfect, put parents in a financial crisis, and quite
frankly, be simply unhealthy. As well as participation in beauty pageants, there is a rage of them on
television as well. Television images and broadcasts have had a huge impact on it s participants and
the type of messages they internalize about what is normal . (Could Child Beauty Pageants Be Banned
in the USA?). Children, as well as teens, view what they see on television as what they must become.
Beauty pageants are very undermining to the participants emotional health, the pressure to look
perfect, and it s countless negative effects they possess. The long standing opinion in the
psychological community about beauty pageants is that they are not in the best interest of the
participant

A Research On Holistic Care
Power of Prayers Aru Narayanasamy s (2006) qualitative research on holistic care focused on the
effects Narayanasamy s previous empirical studies have had on nursing education. In today s society,
holistic care this is not considered as a mean of medical intervention. But yet it can provide a profound
healing power for patients by giving them hope and a sense of purpose. For instance, by praying,
individuals satisfy their spiritual needs and strengthen their belief in higher power. Believing that a
higher power has the ability to heal will provide emotional and spiritual support for those who have
faith. Although previous studies (Koening, 1998; Write, 2002) demonstrating the positive effects of
prayers on individuals with health complications, still the medical field professionals are reluctant of
accepting and practicing this belief in their treatment interventions. To be able to answer above
question, of whether previous studies on holistic studies have affected nursing education,
Narayanasamy s study relied heavily on action research in which he reviewed large amount of
previous primary qualitative research conducted on the same topic. Additionally, Narayanasamy
incorporated surveys in this research to get the current state of nurses holistic care practices.
Participants in the survey consisted of nurses representing adult, child and mental health care units. It
is not specifically stated in the research how many surveys were collected. However, the data that

Essay about Citizenship, a Right and a Responsibility .
When I think of America I think of freedom and citizenship. The right to vote or the right of free
speech are aspects that, as citizens, we posses. Being born in America automatically gives you these
rights and many more, and most importantly, you become a citizen. Now, with citizenship comes
responsibility such as obeying the law and paying taxes. So if you follow these simple rules does this
make you an effective citizen? This question, in my opinion, is almost impossible to answer for a
number of reasons, which will be addressed in the following paper. It was extremely hard to come up
with a clear cut answer as to what an effective citizen entails. I grappled with this term through many
drafts and in the end came up with many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The money also goes to pay for police and fire protection which we depend upon every day, these
people are a necessity to our daily lives. Citizens must also abide by certain laws, which in the mind of
some citizens, is a sacrifice. My answer to them is that we are not in a state of nature and this is a price
you have to pay for living in a society. In their mind, if they were in a state of nature then they would
not have to abide by such laws. As John Locke pointed out, we all are here for the preservation of
mankind. We make these sacrifices for protection and, in the end, not only benefit the individual but
also benefit the community, society, or nation. (Locke, pgs. 170 171, 180 186). So each citizen, in
order to (in Abraham Lincoln s word s) form a more perfect union, must make certain sacrifices which
in the end, not only helps you but helps others, this is one of our responsibilities as citizens. Finally, in
regards to this paragraph, someone who DOES fulfill his or her responsibilities, are good citizens, but
that is not the whole definition of a good citizen, it is simply one part of a bigger picture.
The question can now be raised, if one follows and fulfills these responsibilities does that really make
them a good citizen? If a person follows the laws and pays his or her taxes, does that make them a
good or effective citizen? In my opinion, it all depends upon the person defining the term effective
citizenship. Each person has different beliefs and

The Erie Canal Linked Transportation and Trade in the...
The Erie canal was very important to the United States. It was designed to link our nation through
transportation and trade and was the fastest way to transport goods. It also linked many parts of the
country. The Erie Canal was a vital part of Henry Clay s plan known as the American System, which
was designed to link our nation through trade and transportation.
The canal that links the waters of Lake Erie to the west of the Hudson River in the east, is the Erie
Canal. The Erie Canal is an example of Henry Clay s vision to harmonize and balance the country s
agriculture, economy and industries. The building of this canal was first proposed in 1808 and was
eventually completed in 1824. At the time, New York State Governor De Witt Clinton envisioned a
canal that would link Albany to Buffalo. The idea was criticized by some and given the name Clinton
s ditch . The idea turned out to be a critical turning point for the country since it opened up many new
possibilities. In the early 19th century the transportation of goods between the east and west was
expensive and time consuming. The normal way of transportation before the canal, was by horse
drawn carriages. Then the bold idea of the Erie Canal was proposed to ease the tiring commute. The
Erie canal was intentionally built to open the country west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlers.
The canal would also provide a safe, cheaper way for produce to be carried to various markets. The
canal then became the fastest way

Abstract A review of the main technologies currently available to produce wines with lower alcohol
(ethanol) levels was undertaken. These comprise technologies to reduce the initial sugar levels in the
grape juice; yeasts to produce less alcohol by diverting sugar metabolism to glycerol production; and
post fermentation technologies to remove some all of the alcohol from the wine. Some of the legal
issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The
major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects
on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion
efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for
genetic modification. A summary of the application of reduced alcohol technologies

  • 2. Wages of Crime by R. T Naylor Introduction: Wages of Crime: Black Markets, Illegal Finance, and the Underworld Economy is a book by R. T. Naylor based on his views of organized crime and the government s stance and involvement. Naylor writes from a mostly democratic point of view and presents his thesis quite clearly. Naylor s thesis in this book is that organized crime is a convenient myth handed to society by the government. In this book Naylor sets up four important concepts: first on the black market operations of guerrilla groups, second on the modern arms market, then on money laundering, and finally the underworld trade in gold. Throughout the book he talks about the critique of the public perceptions of organized crime, a discussion of anti money laundering policies, and an analysis of terrorist financing. Summery At the start of his second chapter Naylor sets up the difference between the motives of insurgent groups versus criminal groups. Naylor claims Criminals commit economic crimes to make money. (pg. 45) and that is where motivation ends for them. The difference between insurgent groups is, money is merely a tool one that is necessary but not sufficient to achieve. Like the formally constituted governments they challenge, insurgent groups have political programs...they have control over armed forces, and they directly compete with the state for territory, population, and resources. (pg. 45) A parallel economy is then created by the guerrilla groups to supply the population with what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Americans ought not to be compelled to yield what our nation is glad for, including majority rules system and opportunity of representation. On account of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) organization banning the connection to the terrorist site, the USA Patriot Act was translated mistakenly. Their choice to boycott the hyperlink was an infringement of the right to speak freely. A connection to a site ought not to be seen as correspondences gear. Then again, the UCSD understudies pay for the right to gain entrance, accordingly providing for them their own particular rights to the right to gain entrance and how they utilize it. In the event that the colleges were giving the server access to the understudies free of charge, then it would be an alternate story. Yet, since the understudies are paying for the right to gain entrance, they get rights through the exchange. Case in point, the vast majority would concur that the college would not be permitted to preclude understudies from connecting to a site which condemned the college. In spite of the fact that, if UCSD contended that they claim the server and they can confine their clients however they see fit, how is this contention not the same as the case close by? The Americans dread of terrorists ought not to make them surrender what their nation is about. The United States is about vote based system and opportunity of articulation. There is no compelling reason to yield flexibility of statement with a specific end goal to stop the terrorism. Regardless of the fact that the terrorism is decreased on the grounds that individuals were eager to surrender their own particular rights, then the US will wind up with an alternate real issue which could adversely influence the nation considerably more. That issue would be that the flexibility of declaration would be significantly more confined. In the event that higher ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Benjamin Zander: The Transformative Power of Classical Music In Benjamin Zander s TED talk, he educates individuals on his main message which is to teach everyone the power of classical music, however, also covers many important and knowledgeable lessons that we can gather. Benjamin Zander states that a good leader is one who trusts the capacity of the people he/she is working with to turn the leader s vision into a reality. A leader who doesn t doubt or show any uncertainty about his team fosters a positive environment with motivated individuals who are confident and have the drive to make the leader s vision a reality. In the past, there are several leaders who trusted others and were successful in completing their objective such as Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. As Ben mentioned in the talk, if Martin Luther King had not sounded absolutely confident or if he had shown any doubt while giving his I Have A Dream speech, then the people part of the movement would not have been as motivated or confident to continue the movement. Hence, it is crucial for leaders to be confident and to trust the people that they work with. In today s world, there are new issues that have come to light such as the inadequate education for girls and women in third world countries, climate change, poverty, and political instability. • 7. Nature Versus Nurture Has Been A Big Debate In The Past Nature versus nurture has been a big debate in the past few years. Debates and arguments from both sides has its own statements which makes their side stronger. Some argue that it is in the genetics if a person is intelligent where some state the opposite, that surroundings make a person intelligent which improves them in a person mentally and physically. In the 1950s psychologist Harry Harlow studied the effects of maternal deprivation on the development of baby monkeys. Some philosophers such as Plato and Descartes suggested that certain things are inborn (Saul McLeod, 2007), or that they occur naturally regardless of environmental influences. Other examples of nature debates were Bowlby s 1969 theory of attachment likewise Chomsky s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dizygotic twins show a higher correlation than their other siblings even when reared apart supporting the theory that nature does have a major influence on human intelligence. Nurture intelligence is another factor which is still unfolded. Some believe that upbringing a child in a proper environment can effect their mood, body and their views towards to world. If someone s brought up in an environment where he or she gets all the facilities and necessities of daily life, it will help through the entire life, in saying that if the person receives the correct surroundings, family support, supportive friends circle, it can help them throughout the journey of life. Family habits, interests and company of good people as mentioned above will leave a significant effect on the person s development. The nature theory holds the genetic influence over abstract traits however, the environmental factors are the real origins of our behaviour. We want to be according to the environment around us. At the end we are still confused which way is right nature or nurture since both sides have valid reasons to be right. Some traits come to us by genes and some we experience through travelling and experiencing different situations in our lifetime, which is a proven fact. How Did Shakespeare Influence Sir Francis Drake Famous Influences Throughout William Shakespeare s life, the Sixteenth Century encompassed an overpowering need for new ideas and different opinions. Also, culture flourished within the civilization of Europe. Not only did Shakespeare change the way people viewed plays, he also lived among notable contemporaries. During the Sixteenth Century, many famous artists and explorers presented themselves and influenced the people around them. A few people during Shakespeare s life still make an impact through their impressive accomplishments. Three famous people who lived during the Shakespearean Era were Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I, and Galileo Galilei. Initially, Sir Francis Drake travelled the world as a renowned explorer. Born in the 1540s, Francis Drake discovered his love for exploring during his teenage years. By 1577, a captain volunteered him as the leader of an expedition which passed around South America, through the Strait of Magellan, and into the untouched coast beyond. • 9. Theories about the Dissapearance of the Neanderthal Essay The Neanderthals lived in areas ranging from Western Europe through central Asia from about 200,000 to between 36,000 and 24,000 years ago. The Neanderthals lived in groups of 30 to 50 individuals, they invented many of the tool types that were to be perfected by fully sapient peoples, they had weapons adequate to deal with both the cave lion and cave bear, they used body paint, buried their dead. Neanderthal Man survived through the Ice Age. They are thought to have had fire. Neanderthals lived side by side with modern humans for over 10,000 years. There are many theories on why the Neanderthals disappeared. Most of them involve Homo Sapiens in one way or another, considering that the Neanderthal s extinction coincides with the early ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this theory is plausible, it is not probable, considering that the Neanderthals lived in close proximity to modern man for so long. Still, it is possible that there was a disease, which caused the Neanderthals to die out. The last theory states that Neanderthals were not in fact a separate species, but interbred to a greater or lesser extent with the incoming Homo sapiens, whose genes eventually became dominant at the eventual expense of the genes delivering Neanderthal characteristics. This hypothesis comes from the fact that Neanderthals and Cro Magnons inhabited the same regions of Europe for thousands of years. It is not beyond a doubt that they did come in contact with one another, possibly even trading and communicating. Neanderthals and modern humans became one species, through thousands of years of interbreeding. Supporters of this theory state that some modern day Europeans have facial features similar to Neanderthal man. Neanderthal genes may have been inserted into the human gene pool, and Human genes may have been added to the Neanderthals. At this point, Neanderthals and humans may have evolved together at an incredible rate, becoming one race in a relatively short period of time. On the other hand, a disease, a war, or an increase in population causing the natural resources to be inadequate for keeping so many hominids alive might have cut off Neanderthals suddenly from contact with the humans, ... • 10. Switching At Thomas County Central High School I am a volleyball player who was denied eligibility to play varsity volleyball at Thomas County Central High School, because I switched schools sooner than a year ago. I understand that you along with the rest of the GHSA board care about students not taking advantage of switching schools just to be on an eye catching sports team. As a player, I respect this and thank you for keeping star athletes from taking mine or my team mates spots on the team. It is also understandable that you along with other GHSA board members may not think about school systems like ours that continuously have people switching primarily because of the rigor of different school, such as me switching to TCCHS from Thomasville High School Scholars Academy, because I simply could not keep up with the pace and rigor that they teach with. After weighing out both points of view, transfers from any school should be allowed to participate in varsity sports without having to wait a year from the time of transferring to their new school. My thought out solution is to simply allow it, but have those athletes only be able to play half of the season. The 50% that they get to play in the season would be talked out between the coach, athlete, and the parents. Having this rule would be a good compromise between not allowing transfers to play and allowing them. With this rule in place, athletes would be able to get in their time to stand out, but they would not take away a lot of time from players who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Dietary Guidelines For Nutrition And Human Needs According to the History of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans , In 1977 after years of scientific review and controversy the US Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, led by Senator George McGovern, recommended Dietary Goals for the American people (US Senate Select Committee, 1977). The Goals included complementary nutrient based and food based recommendations. The first goal aim attention at energy balance and urged that, to prevent overweight, Americans should endure only as much energy as they are necessary. Overweight Americans should consume less energy and expend more energy. For the nutrient based Goals, the Senate Committee recommended Americans, boost their consumption of complex carbohydrates and naturally occurring sugars; and make less consumption of refined and processed sugars, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium (1).) The beginning of the Dietary Goals encounter debates and controversy, as industry groups and the scientific community expressed questioning that the science available at the time supported the specificity of the numbers provided in the Dietary Goals. To support the credibility of the science used by the Committee, the US Department of Agriculture and US Department of Health and Human Services (then called the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare) scientists from the two Departments acquire additional expertise from the scientific community throughout the country to address the public s need for ... • 14. The Cost Of The Asset Under generally accepted accounting principles, assets both tangible and certain intangible assets that have an estimated useful life of more than one year but not infinitely should be allocated and depreciated, amortized or depleted. The cost of the asset needs to be determined as well as any possible salvage or resale value estimated. The total cost of an asset needs to not only include the purchase price of the item but also sales taxes, installation costs, freight and interest (if applicable). Costs currently or that are incurred in the future for maintenance and repairs is only an expense and does not change the value of the asset. Basically, all costs that were necessary to allow the asset to become useful should be capitalized. Depreciation, amortization and depletion are acceptable methods used under U.S. GAAP to charge the cost of an asset used in a company s day to day operations to expense over the periods benefited systematically. Depreciation refers to prorating tangible and intangible asset s cost less any salvage value evenly over the useful life of the asset. For an item to be considered an asset, it must intended for operations of the business and not for resale. Useful life should be reasonable but can vary from one asset to another from one view point to another. Payroll taxes are taxes that are paid by employers and their employees. Payroll taxes are collected by the federal, state, and local governments to fund certain programs or projects. The employee s tax proportion is typically deducted from the employee s wages every earning period, and the employer fraction of the payroll taxes are paid directly by the employer and are based upon their employee s wages. The amount of payroll taxes that must be paid are required to be reported to the Internal Revenue Service and the employer s state and local taxing agencies. In their mind, if they were in a state of nature then they would not have to abide by such laws. As John Locke pointed out, we all are here for the preservation of mankind. Some of the legal issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for genetic modification. A summary of the application of reduced alcohol technologies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
