The South was politically, culturally, economically, and spiritually built around the institution of
slavery. In the antebellum South, slavery was the thread that held the fabric of society together and
defined the southern woman. Slavery was the foundation the southern hierarchy was based upon.
Race and gender determined a person s status with white slaveholding males at the top and black
female slaves at the bottom. Slave ownership elevated the status of both male and female genders,
giving white women more power within the slaveholding system. This sense of superiority and
power led to the white women s acceptance for the institution of slavery. Slavery defined white
women s place in society and gave them the belief that it could lead to social hierarchy for them.
Affluent white southern women, or southern mistresses, supported the institution of slavery
because of the idea that slave ownership provided meant you were a part of the elite of the South.

personal beliefs. Crane represents this as well when Maggie has to try and move out of her
situation, but ends up not being able to as she becomes too reliant on Pete. In Twain s novel, Jim

Stuck in between majors at the beginning of the quarter, and desperately needing another credit to
compete my schedule, I stumbled upon this seminar and added it to my already stem filled
schedule. Hoping to gain value on what a potential major could be for me, I went to the first week
of class and was immediately impacted by the presenters for the College of the Environment. I wish
to reflect back on this presentation as well as Professor Richard Ladner s presentation in Computer
Science engineering and Professor Wendy Thomas s presentation in bioengineering. The first week
of class immediately brought with it an important presentation to me on the topic of Diversity in
stem. As an existing pre engineering student at the time of the presentation I had a very narrow
misconception as to what the field of engineering entails and the majors that are available within in.
During the presentation, I learned that the College of the Environment actually contained its own
form of engineering, environmental engineering, that is recognized as the only engineering major
outside the School of Engineering here at the University of Washington. This was crucial to me
because it immediately broadened my horizon, I have always had an interest in the environment
and this allowed me to research a new potential major that could intertwine my interest in science

There have been many losses and victories in creating the government and political parties the
United States relies on today. The two major parties have defiantly changed their original platforms
as time has gone on, but they have each gained voters for their beliefs. Though the parties have

They began as one single party, know as the Democratic Republican Party founded by James

It has now been established that brand communities are a privileged link between companies and
consumers. Their impact on brand commitment, loyalty and equity has also been widely

In regards to cognitive psychology and the ways in which we define ourselves in terms of
individuals, is one of the biggest areas of interest. The area defines the process used in order to
acquire, receive, retain and store the information in which is received. During childhood our
memory grows, and through adulthood throughout until our middle age, where shortly after we
begin to decline in productivity. Initially, when a person grows and changes, their brain begins to
change and their cognitive functions worsen. One example being the way in which we
appropriately word and express things, begins to decline in fluency and accuracy. (American
psychological association, 2006). Studies have shown that the semantic and procedural memory
declines the least, while that flashbulb memory declines the most. The amount of large
declination varies due to middle age sensitivity and the lack of self efficiency. The memory
initially declines based not on the lack of storage, but merely how they retain and store that
information which is being received. Naturally, this happens because the cortex shrinks, leaving a
serious lack of blood flow to the brain, and triggers that loss, which is naturally all apart of the

The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution protects one s rights against
unreasonable searches and seizures. It also states that no warrants shall be issued without probable
cause. Probable cause can be defined as a person of reasonable caution who believes that a crime

On October 31, 1963, a Cleveland police detective named Martin McFadden saw two men, John
W. Terry and Richard Chilton, standing on a street corner looking suspicious. One would walk
by a certain store window, stare in, and walk back to the other to confer. This was repeated
several times, and the detective believed that they were plotting to do a store robbery. The officer
approached the men and addressed himself as a policeman, and asked their names. When the men
appeared suspicious in their answers, Officer McFadden patted them down and discovered that
both men were armed. He proceeded to remove their guns and arrested them for carrying concealed
weapons. Terry was then sentenced to three years in prison.
Terry appealed the case, claiming that the guns found should be inadmissible in court proceedings
as evidence since his Fourth Amendment rights were violated. The case was appealed to the
Supreme Court, where it was it was ruled that his rights had not been violated.
In an 8 to 1 decision, the Court held that the search undertaken by the officer was reasonable under
the Fourth Amendment and that the weapons seized could be introduced into evidence against

The story The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, like many stories by this author, is loaded with
symbolism and concepts about human nature. Each description of characters, places, and physical
aspects is written in a way that is simple to understand, but one should not be tricked by his ordinary
words since there is always a greater meaning behind them. In this particular story, if one considers
the period of time when the story was written, which was the nineteen thirties, is perceived how

within the evidence presented, that the procedures TVA used were practiced prior. Although the
district court concluded that TVA s interview process had been manipulated to exclude African
