The science of today is the technology of tomorrow. So says Edward Teller, echoing
his thoughts as a noted physicist that science isn t just the future, but indeed what
creates the future. But what about Mary Shelley? A noted romanticist, Mary Shelley
s views may have been a bit different from those of Teller. In fact, Mary Shelley s
first novel, Frankenstein, might just be the best example of her thoughts on the
matter. Throughout the novel, Shelley emphasizes the importance of scientific
responsibility, and is clearly against science playing the role of God. However, this
is not for any real religious purpose. Instead, Shelley uses science to express gradual
degradation of what she had viewed as the natural world that that she had treasured

Being Chinese Vietnamese American, I have always seen myself as being very
unique. In addition to celebrating the Western holidays such as Halloween,

Cognitive Dissonance Theory, or CDT for short, is an objective communication
theory that was developed by Leon Festinger. Cognitive Dissonance is defined as
The distressing mental state caused by inconsistency between a person s two beliefs
or a belief and an action. (Griffin, Ledbetter, et al). An example of cognitive
dissonance would be a health conscious smoker, this person knows that smokingis bad
for them, but they still smoke because they enjoy it. Their desire to be healthy
conflicts with their smoking, this conflict places them in a distressing mental state, a
state of cognitive dissonance. Festinger provides three hypotheses for CDT: 1.)
Selective exposure prevents dissonance. 2.) Post decision dissonance creates need for
reassurance. and 3.) Minimal justification for action induces attitude change.

The word culture impacts each and every individual differently. For me, my culture
is associated with pride and joy; for others, cultural heritage can remind a person of
pain and suffering. All cultural experiences vary depending on where people grew up
and the amount of value placed on cultural traditions within families.
Most people can easily describe their culture; many simply state, I m Italian and Irish.
However, being a third generation American, I ve truly become a melting pot. I am 1
/16th Scottish, 1/16th British, 1/4th Polish, 1/4th Italian and 3/8th s German. My
grandfather on my mom s side is one hundred percent Italian, while my grandmother
on my mom s side was one hundred percent Polish. This makes my mom fifty percent
Italian and fifty percent Polish, which is pretty typical of a second generation
American. My grandfather on my dad s side was one hundred percent German, while
my grandmother was 1/2 German, 1/4th Scottish, and 1/4th British. Since my
grandmother, who was only a first generation American already had three different
ethnicities, my culture heritage started to become slightly a typical from your
traditional American. My father, who was 3/4th German, 1/8th Scottish and 1/8th
British, lacked any similarities with my mom s heritage. This made me part of five

believed by changing her name for awhile in her life. When Dumas name became
Julie she realized that more people were drawn to her and that she had more friends

Death In Edgar Allan Poe s Annabel Lee
Within Edgar Allan Poe s poem Annabel Lee, he shows us another fine example of
death. Although this time instead of murder it is a sudden death of a loved one from
the narrator s childhood. And throughout this poem the first stanza starts out by
informing the reader that there was once a lady named Annabel Leewho lived in a
kingdom that was by the sea, and that she had loved the narrator. He continues in the
second stanza by adding that while they were in lovethey were both children and
with the lines But we loved with a love that was more than love /I and my Annabel
Lee /With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven/coveted her and me. (Poe, 930)
The idea of them having a love so pure and so innocent that even the Angels of
Heaven could be jealous of it was given. Although, the narrator continues in the third
and fourth stanzas stating that this jealousy is the reason Annabel Lee had caught ill
one night and was then brought to her grave by the sea. The narrator continues in
