1974 marked the introduction to legislation that captured child maltreatment and enabled funding to
support and develop child abuse reporting systems and procedures for managing maltreatment
reports. From the introduction of legislation through time new policies were developed to adhere to
the provisions of adoption, family preservation, and family support. Similar to other developed
countries in child welfare, visions for community caring systems are developed for families and
maintaining children in their own community as initial responses. Family centered practice, culture
connection, and community continuity are viewed as important variables to serve the best interest
of a child.
In the US, African American and American Indian children are overrepresented in the child
welfare system. There is a lack of cultural competence which can lead to inaccurate assessments
(Velazquez, 2011). If biological families need to stay together and child welfare should make this
a priority than perhaps the US isn t the best at modeling this behavior. According to Gilbert(2011)
in the 1990 s policy seemed less concerned with birth families and more about children s
opportunities to live in new families created through adoption (p.24). This appears to work against
the parents working to regain custody because the system demonstrates an interest in looking to
place children opposed to working with families towards reunification.

Reflection On Swimming
Introduction
At the beginning of the semester, the health behaviour change I started pursuing is to swim
regularly. My goal of engage in this exercise is to acquire and grasp at least one swimming style
by the end of this semester, and the outcome I expect to obtain from it is the improvement of
physical fitness. Swimming is a strength consuming aerobic exercise that brings a variety benefits
to one s physiological and psychological states. Scholarly research has indicated that swimming
contributes to weight loss and acceleration of illness recovery (Yuan et al., 2016). Also, it can
improve emotional state, physical mobility and functional capacity, all of which can lead to a better
quality of life (Karapolat et al., 2009). Leg arm coordination and neural plasticity were both found
to be correlated with long term swimming behaviour. For aerobic exercises in general, it enhances
pulmonary functions and cognitive functions.
Methods
Dosage. After referring to my school and work schedule, I decided to swim at least two times a
week. Since I was a novice of swimming, I registered a swimming lesson for beginners at Hart
House fitness centre. The sessions took place every Monday and each took 50 minutes. My
attendance of the lesson each week was counted towards the dosage, which means that apart from
the lesson, I intend to swim by myself at least once a week to practice and strengthen what I had
