A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of
overwhelming obstacles. (Christopher Reeve) In The Red Badge Of Courage, the author Stephen
Crane, analyzes the terms hero and being heroic through the main character s actions during
WWI. Stephen Crane was intrigued with the art of war and battles and to write the novel as
accurately as possible spoke to men from WWI. He wrote the novel with such detail and used so
many vivid descriptions most literary critics thought he was a veteran when he had never set foot of
the battle field.
The main character of The Red Badge of Courage Henry Fleming was considered a hero when in
reality only really deserves the title at the end of the novel when he was finally heroic Henry s
name has subjective qualities with its meaning The first part of his last name Fleme when used
as a transitive verb means to flee, run away Fleming means one who puts to flight Fleme also

I found this dependence frightening and would probably make me want to turn into a bug, too.
Kafka was brilliant in not actually letting his readers know exactly what kind of bug Gregor was.
It was obviously intentional. When the book got published, Kafka was actually worried that the
publisher would want to illustrate a picture of the bug like creature. He wrote the publisher
explaining that he didn t want any pictures that depicted what Gregor might have looked like. I
like this idea because it really helps the reader of the story use their imagination. One of the worst
things in the world is to read a book, get a picture in your head of what characters look and act
like, and in the end, flip through pictures generated from another person s mind. In John Updike s
commentary of Kafka s The Metamorphosis, he alludes to Gregor maybe being a centipede instead
of a beetle or a cockroach. Though Kafka says Gregor has numerous legs , I do not necessarily
think that means he has to be a centipede. To a human being, numerous legs would be six legs as
compared to our normal two legs. Besides, never have I seen a centipede with a domed like
brown belly . Also, a cockroach (which would be a fitting choice) does not seem to match the

feedback off of the person that is listening, an example of this is that if you had text somebody
saying something they would simply text you back and you wouldn t be able to see what their
body language says and this is why I believe businesses should use more face to face methods of
speaking to each other, this is because they are able to judge by body language if somebody is
lying to them or if somebody understands their idea correctly whereas through non verbal there is
no indication of this sort.

In April 1963, the city of Birmingham, Alabama, was caught in the midst of massive civil rights
protests. Protestors advocating for desegregation brought the city to a halt with widespread
disruptive yet peaceful protests. After a circuit court placed an injunction against protesting,
parading and picketing King was arrested for his involvement. While in jail King received a letter
written by eight Alabama clergymen criticizing King for his disruptive protests and the breaking of
laws which lead to his arrest. In response King wrote an open letter explaining his actions that
would be known as Letter from Birmingham Jail. In his letter Dr. King effectively addresses an
unsympathetic audience by focusing on building his credibility rather than seeking an emotional
