Crafting an essay on the subject of "Undergraduate Essays" can be a challenging endeavor that
requires a delicate balance of research, critical thinking, and effective communication. The
complexity arises from the need to not only convey information but also to engage the reader
and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the chosen topic.
Firstly, the task involves extensive research to gather relevant information and scholarly sources.
This process demands time and effort to sift through academic journals, books, and reputable
online resources to ensure the essay is well-informed and supported by credible evidence.
Once the research is completed, the challenge lies in organizing the information in a coherent
and logical manner. The structure of the essay must follow a clear introduction, body, and
conclusion, each section seamlessly connecting to convey a cohesive argument. This requires
careful planning and consideration of the essay's overall flow.
Moreover, the writing style must be academic and refined, demonstrating a command of
language and an ability to express ideas with clarity and precision. Balancing formality with
engagement is crucial to keep the reader's interest while maintaining an appropriate level of
professionalism.
Additionally, meeting the specified word count can be a hurdle. It demands conciseness and the
ability to convey a compelling argument within the given limitations, which may require careful
editing and revising.
Furthermore, addressing potential counterarguments and incorporating a nuanced perspective
adds another layer of complexity. It requires a deep understanding of the topic and the ability to
anticipate and respond to opposing viewpoints effectively.
In conclusion, writing an essay on "Undergraduate Essays" involves navigating through a
multifaceted process, encompassing research, organization, writing style, and critical analysis. It

2. John Everett Millais Ophelia
During 1852, John Everett Millais created an astounding masterpiece, of oil on
canvas, called Ophelia. The primary focus is the character of Ophelia from
Shakespeare s play Hamlet. The painting is made to illustrate the tragic death of
Ophelia in Shakespeare s play Hamlet, where she fell in the stream and drowned. In
the painting, Ophelia is observed lying down in the middle of a running, narrow,
river. She is painted with a long white dress layered with lace and beads highlighting
her importance in the painting. Ophelia s body is shown submerged with only her
face, neck, breasts, and hands floating at the surface, along with parts of her dress.
Her hair is shown drifting in the water around her head demonstrating her lost youth
with her hands submissively turned up. Her face is... Show more content on

He painted white flowers on both ends of her in a straight path bringing the
viewers eyes to her, the brownness of the tree on top of Ophelia s head attracts
attention which also leads to Ophelia. The painting was made in a way to make the
viewer relate to the painting on a deeper level. Thus, the flowers around her
illustrate her delicacy. The flowers on the bushes and ground are white signifying
purity and peace ( Ophelia s Flowers ). While in accordance with the story, the roses
signify her brother s nickname for her rose of may . While the willows, nettles, and
daisies illustrate abandoned love, innocence and pain (Bill). As for the chain of
violets around Ophelia s neck, it demonstrates virginity and faithfulness (Bill). In
conclusion, Millais might have chosen to illustrate the illusion of space to represent a
more realistic setting, however the artist still desired to keep the attention directed
towards
3. Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
I pick my son up from school from time to time and usually speak with his teacher
to see how he is doing in class. The teacher always tells me about his hyperactive
behavior and suggests me and my wife take him to see a doctor and have him
tested for ADHD. I have a long list of people in my family who have been
diagnosed with ADHD and I have personally seen the side effects from the
medication, so I have been a little reluctant to bring him in to be tested. My child is
indeed hyperactive, but I look back before ADHD was even a disorder and wonder
what happened to teachers and parents being patient and learning how to work
around the disorder without medication due to the horrible side effects that the
medication causes.
There are many reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Researchers have found numerous ways to curb the symptoms of this disorder
without the harsh medications. The alternative ways are changing the child s diet,
you can give your child supplements like fish oil, increased physical activity, brain
training therapies, and better parenting skills. Most family doctors will not suggest
these things to parents because most parents are looking for a quick fix and doctors
do not make any money from not prescribing medication. A child with ADHD
requires more attention and most parents are too busy to give it to them, so they look
for the quick fix, but doctors are not going over the alternative treatments or the
dangerous side effects from the medication, they just listen to the parent for 5 10
minutes, ask the child a few questions, do a quick physical, and give medicine. The
doctor usually never goes over the length side effects, the harm the medication does
to the child over a long period of time, or the alternative treatments that can help. I m
almost positive any responsible parent would want to know these things and I believe
it is the doctor s responsibility to give them the information before prescribing it to
their
4. Trombone History
Origin The trombone is one of the only instruments that does not use keys or valves
and is therefore a very unique instrument as it has a slide instead. The trombones first
ancestor was an instrument called the tromba, which was essentially a trumpet. Then
they added a slide to the trumpet and named it the slide trumpet. The slide trumpet
became not as well known as its brother, a larger version of the slide trumpet known
as the sackbut (original name for the trombone). From the sackbut came 4 new kinds
of trombone, alto, tenor, bass and the contrabass trombones, although the alto
trombone is rarely used, each still exists and plays a different pitch.
WHO invented it and WHEN/WHERE was it? The inventor of the trombone is not
specific as it was invented through people experimenting on the trumpet. Although it
is not clear where exactly it was invented or who exactly it was, it is clear that it was
invented somewhere in Europe, most likely by either the English or Belgian. After
that, production of the trombone usually occurred in Germany, where it was called
the Posaune. While the inventing of the slide trumpet took place in the mid 1400 s,
the inventing of the former ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1500 s the trombone was found incredibly useful by most composers because it
was the only brass instrument that could have played any note on the scale at that
time. In the beginning the trombone was found being used primarily in churches,
town concert bands and even military bands by the 1700 s. They only became regular
members of the symphony orchestra by the 1850 s. In modern day society they are
commonly used for bands, orchestra, jazz bands, brass ensembles and other popular
music groups. Gluck, Gossec and Mozart were all famous composers who wrote
popular and large pieces for the trombone. Tommy Dorsey was a famous trombonist
who was one of the first to play the trombone as a lyrical solo
5. The Strange Case Of Dr. Jeykll And Mr. Hyde
Hello Class, This morning I will be telling you about a suspenseful and exciting
book. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a very nerve wracking and
entertaining book. I will be explaining the main character, setting, plot, author, and
what I have learned from this book. This is a very interesting book that has many
changes throughout the story. Now let s begin.
Dr. Jeykll, Mr. Hyde, Dr. Lanyon, and Mr. Utterson are the main characters in the
story. Other characters include Poole, Jeykll s butler, Mr. Enfield, Mr. Utterson s
younger cousin, Inspector Newcomen, a Scotland Yard detective, Mr. Gust, head law
clerk to Mr. Uttersons, Sir Danvers Carew, a Member of Parliament, and the
housemaid, Sarah. The story takes place in London ... Show more content on

Robert Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850. Robert Louis Stevenson
was a fragile child, who was greatly influenced by his father s punishments and his
nurse s horrifying stories about demons. Robert Stevenson went to the University
of Edinburgh to learn about law. He gave up law and turned to writing. He married
an American woman. Robert Stevenson also had bad health. The Strange Case of
Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll was based on a nightmare Stevenson previously had. He died
in 1894 at an early age of forty four in the Island of Samoa.
Throughout the story, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I have learned
many different lessons. One thing I have learned is that nobody is perfect and
everyone has a bad side. I have also learned that the world can contain much evil.
The book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, has taught me many different
things.
You have learned about the main characters, setting, plot, author, and the lessons I
have learned from this book. The book has three main characters which include
Mr. Utterson, Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jekyll. This book was a very exciting book that
ended on a cliffhanger. The main message of the book is that everybody has a good
and bad side. To conclude, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a very
interesting book that has an important
6. The Placebo Effect Of Drugs
When people are ill, the only thing they want is to feel better. The traditional way to
achieve this in the western world was to attend a doctor and receive medication.
However, more attention is now being paid to other forms of treatments. One of these
is using the placebo effect as a treatment.
The placebo effect occurs when a person is treated using a fake (inactive) substance
that looks like an ordinary medicine, the patient is generally unaware that the
substance is inactive. It is the patient s expectation to feel better, which seems to
play a major role in the way the patient actually feels. However a placebo will not
cure an illness. The placebo effect has been used in clinical trials to test the
effectiveness of new drugs. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These three elements are interconnected and can help to understand how illness is
affected by different factors in a person s life. In the first instance, a placebo affects
only the psychological element. Consequently the placebo effects the physical and
the social element because of the interconnection between these.
Unlike conventional medication, the only part of the body affected during the
placebo effect is the brain. (The mind and the body are connected and therefore ill
people taking placebos often feel physically better). Typically, the person who is
receiving the placebo from the doctor thinks he/she is getting real medicine. The
client will go through the usual process of getting the treatment; seeing the reliable
doctor, taking in medicine at specific times and amounts. All the normal rituals of
treatments are preserved. The patient s expectation of getting better while taking
the placebo will be as high as when a real medicine is taken(H.K. Beecher 35% of
1082 patients) (A Comprehensive Review of the Placebo Effect: Recent Advances
and Current Thought Annual Review of Psychology). Numerous pieces of research
have shown that people taking a placebo felt as good as people taking the actual
medicine. Research is ongoing on how the placebo exactly works. Indeed, there exists
not a single but many placebo effects, with different mechanisms and in different
7. Essay on SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLES
We see them everywhere these days, on the way to work, on the highways, parked
in every driveway and hundreds of them by every shopping center. Sports utility
vehicles have given a new meaning to the word car. When it comes to safety, SUV
s (sports utility vehicle) are by far the most dangerous vehicles on the road, and the
road is exactly the place they should not be. Sports utility vehicles are designed for
off road driving. It seems like bigger the body is on a SUV, the more popular it is; the
SUV s that we see on the roads today are still a normal size car compared to the
coming future models.
With huge bodies and very low safety features sports utility vehicles are being used
for totally wrong purposes. Their huge bodies make it ... Show more content on

The chances of survival for the passengers in the sedan would be 4 times less. Due
to a tall chassis that the body of the vehicle is mounted on, the risk of flipping is
very high. A sports utility vehicle is nothing but a mini van body on a 4x4 truck
frame. A mini van or a full size van serves exactly the same purpose as a sports
utility vehicle does, and the vans are much safer, also they consume much less
gasoline 270,000
Chevrolet Suburban and Yukon s are on recall, due to airbag problems.
Second reason why SUVs are not a safe transportation vehicle is that oil today, is a
natural resource that will only last for 45 more years. A sports utility vehicle with
an engine size of 5.7 liters has a gasoline mileage equivalent to two Toyota Camrys
and one Honda Civic combined. In order to tow a trailer that is more than 3000
pounds, then a large SUV is the best choice. However if the trailer is less than 3000
pounds, there are many mini vans that are up to the task. The Chevrolet venture tows
3500 pounds and the
Pontiac trans port tows 3000, for example. Mini vans and some wagons have more
usable space than SUVs of comparable size. Interior space is sacrificed when SUV
bodies are designed around truck frames or other 4WD systems. Though few will
admit it, many poseurs think that their
SUV gives them a tough, independent image instead of the
quot;soccer mom quot; or quot;married man quot; image of a mini van or wagon.

8. Lady Macbeth In Act One Of William Shakespeare s Play
One of William Shakespeare s most famous plays Macbeth was a pretty well rounded
play. Act one in the play first started with Macbeth and Banquo battling. While three
witches are casting spells. Macbeth is humble and content with his life until the
witches tell him that he will be the king and the Thane of Cawdor, which makes
Macbethbecome corrupt. In Act II King Duncangoes to stay at the Macbeth s castle.
Lady Macbeth was super persistent on killing King Duncan, so that she and Macbeth

A critical view on my view; 3 main research paradigms in tourism studies using

which is consistent within itself, but may need completely revising as evidence
challenging the factual accuracy of some aspects of its accumulates. (Chambers 21st

(Dowsly, M. (2008) Inuit organized polar bearsport hunting in Nunavut territory,
Canada) I perceive this article to be of a positive nature due to the fact that all the
research is based on facts collected in the sole purpose of supporting the researchers
conclusions. All the data is interpreted in one way, discarding all other views. For
example the approval of the Inuit community is only measured by economical
growth. Not once does the researcher ask the question what is important to the Inuit?
Where lay their values? Is there awareness by the Inuit and non Inuit about the
importance of conservation methods? It seems to me that this researcher is writing a
marketing report instead of really being concerned with the fate of the polar bear and
its conservation. In short this article was focused on obtaining facts, describing,
predicting and verifying.
Interpretive approach The interpretive approach seeks understanding and meaning
into what is being researched. It treats the social world as subject, encouraging it to
speak for itself, Tribe (2001).Interpretive researchers acknowledge that questions can
have multiple answers depending on their and others positionalities, ideologies, rules
and ends. The research is overall conducted on a qualitative basis, using quantitative
methods only in an interpretative manner. While moderate and well distributed
tourism may help to upkeep attractions and preserve the environment, tourism as a

10. Blues Boundaries And The Blues Angela Davis Analysis

History of the Blues

Did Angela Davis get it wrong?
As a consequence of slavery and segregation, Angela Y. Davis contends in Blues
Legacies and Black Feminism, her study of the recordings of Billie Holiday and the
blues
vaudevillians Gertrude (Ma) Rainey and Bessie Smith, black social consciousness has
been
overdetermined by race, with too little attention paid to sex and virtually none to
class. Davis, a
professor of something called the history of consciousness at the University of
California,
Santa Cruz, would have a hard time selling such a notion to this country s black poor,
who are
understandably inclined to blame the legacy of white racism for their poverty. But
she s right in
step with the more radical of her academic colleagues, even if her ingrained cultural
nationalism
prevents her from joining them in dismissing race as an arbitrary social construct
with no basis in
anthropology. Race, according to current academic thinking, is a smokescreen that
has drawn
discussion away from the more crucial issue of class.
If this sounds suspiciously like Marxism, it is Marxism gone post modern: a tool for
the
analysis of literary and other texts, not necessarily a call for the exploited masses to
rise. One
11. of the side effects of this recent trend has been to restore the credibility of certain
black
intellectuals and activists of the 1960 s and 70 s, whose Marxist ideals might
otherwise make
them seem like relics not of their own day but of the 1930 s. Davis made the news in
1969, when
the Regents of the University of California attempted to bar her from teaching at
U.C.L.A.
because she was a member of the Communist Party, and again a year later, when she
briefly
became a fugitive after being accused of supplying the brother of George Jackson
with the
firearms for his one man raid on a Marin County courthouse. (Jonathan Jackson was
killed,
along with three others, in the ensuing shootout. Davis was later apprehended, tried
and
acquitted.)
Davis s thesis in Blues Legacies and Black Feminism, in a nutshell, is that Ma Rainey
and Bessie Smith, among other flamboyant women blues singers
12. Ernest Hemingway Repetition
The Role of Repetition in Hemingway s Short Stories In some of Ernest
Hemingway s greatest short stories, repetition holds great significance. Hemingway
uses repeated words and phrases in various ways. The different ways that
Hemingway uses repetition helps the reader have intuition of what they are reading.
This strategy also allows Hemingway to express different emotions. The techniques
Hemingway uses creates a series of connections between ideas, along with helping
the readers discover more about the meanings and effects of situations as seen in the
following stories: Cat in the Rain, A Clean, Well Lighted Place, and Up in Michigan.

Hemingway writes, Liz liked Jim very much. She liked the way he walked over
from the shop and often went to the kitchen door to watch for him to start down the
road. She liked it about his mustache. She liked it about how white his teeth were
when he smiled (59). The repetition in this story helps the reader understand from a
different perspective the way Liz adores Jim. In the same way, Liz likes the odd
things about Jim, not just the normal things. Hemingway writes, She liked it very
much that he didn t look like a blacksmith. She liked it how D.J. Smith and Mrs.
Smith like Jim. One day she found that she liked it the way the hair was black on
his arms and how white they were above the tanned line when he washed up in the
washbasin outside the house (59). However, these are not as strange as some readers
suggest they are. In the world today, couples want approval of their relationship, for
their friends and family to like their companion. Correspondingly that is one unusual
thing Liz likes about Jim, that D.J. Smith and Mrs. Smith like Jim. The Role of
repetition in the short story Up in Michigan is to share the emotions between the
characters, and the captivating feelings character Liz adores about
13. Character Analysis of Yossarian in Catch 22
Yossarian is the main character of Catch 22, and one of just a few characters that get
fleshed out during the story. Yossarian represents many of the themes and ideas of
Catch 22, and provides a character that most people can sympathize with. Yossarian
is continually worried about dying but at the same time continues to fly his missions
so someone else doesn t have to fly his for him. Yossarianthinks he is sane while
everyone else is crazy; however everyone else thinks the exact opposite. He is also
seen as different because of name, as nobody has heard it before. The battles of life
versus death and sanity versus insanity are some of the things that define Yossarian
while he himself represents the psyche of a soldier during war.
Yossarian is described as a big burley Assyrian man. His appearance makes him
markedly different from the rest of the people in his squadron and is one of the
ways that he is seen as an outsider by the rest of the squadron. In addition to his
appearance, his name also makes him stand out, as it is completely different from
everyone else s and no one has ever heard it before Yossarian himself. These
differences alienate him from the rest of the squadron, save for a few of Yossarian s
close friends, and make it seem like Yossarian is special in some way, even though it
is revealed that he is not really much different than the rest of the squadron.
Even though Yossarian is different in physical appearance and name then the rest of
the squadron, it is

At 12:50 am on Sunday, December 3rd, 1967, Washkansky was taken into the
operating room, anaesthetised and ready to be prepped for transplantation by
Christiaan Barnard. Barnard made an incision, opened Washkansky chest, and began
inserting cannulas (a thin tube inserted into a vein or body cavity to administer
medicine, drain off fluid, or insert a surgical instrument) which are necessary for the
heartlung machine.
Meanwhile, Denise Darvall was in another operating room being prepped for
transplant by Marius Barnard. She had an artificial respirator to help her breathe
and to keep her alive. At 2:20 am, a message was sent to Marius that Washkansky
was ready for the operation and Marius then switched off Denise s artificial
respirator. Twelve minutes later, Denise Darvall s heart stopped
As soon as Darvall s heart stopped, the surgical team made an incision, opened up her
chest and connected her to a heart lung machine. This cooled her blood to preserve
her organs. Christiaan Barnard then cut through the major vessels of Denise s heart,
removed it, and placed the immaculate organ into a sterile dish that was filled with
cold preserving solution at 10 degrees centigrade. Next, the heart was carried next
door, where Louis Washkansky was prepped and ready. It was then immediately

17. The Obedient Woman in Fairy Tales
Fairy tale heroines are usually portrayed as weak and submissive characters. They
are the damsel in distress, the girl who needs to be saved from the wicked
stepmother or witch, and the beautiful daughter in need of a husband. This meek,
submissive female character reached its peek in Charles Perrault s Griselda. Griselda
is consistently abused through the entire story by her controlling husband, but she
takes the abuse without complaint or protest. Her total obedience to her husband is
rewarded at the end when she is reunited with her daughter, restored to her position of
power, and finally treated with respect by her husband. Although Perrault may have
intended Griselda to be a parody, the Grimm Brothers stabilized this obedient,... Show

Griselda is obedient, subservient, submissive, and totally devoted to her husband and
authority figure, the Prince, and in the end is rewarded for these traits. Instead of
destroying or limiting the social expectations of women to be obedient and
submissive; Perrault actually worked to further them.
The Grimm Brothers stabilized the weak and submissive character in the fairy tale
genres with stories like Cinderella, and added in the idea of a higher moral authority
that the women must be obedient to above all else. Cinderella s mother tells he
that if she is good and pious, then the dear lord will always assist [her] and [her

influenced each other in several ways throughout their careers. The Beatles was
arguably the main influence that lead Dylan to go electric, as well as writing a

introduced the Beatles to try pot on their first meeting and inspired Lennon and the
others to change their music style and write more introspective, political and acoustic

19. The And Law Enforcement Officers
Over the past couple years there has been an ever increasing amount of reports
against police using excessive force when the situation does not call for it. Every
time a case like this happens hundreds if not thousands of dollars are wasted to
correct the situation. This is due to the conflicting statements between eyewitnesses
and law enforcement officers. Forensic investigations are needed to understand what
most likely occurred. When we are little we were told to always trust policeofficers
because they are there to look out for us, but not every police officerhas that same
idea. The officers are people and people are flawed by nature but we hold them to a
higher standard and that their word is worth more than the average citizen in a
court of law. This leads to officers being considered correct until valid conflicting
evidence is introduced where the officer is shown in the wrong. Thankfully modern
advances in technology, specifically smart phones, are causing new evidence to be

Ethical Dilemma Assignment

INTRODUCTION
This dilemma is for a 2 week old baby diagnosed with a gastrointestinal perforation
two days after birth, which was later corrected with a temporary ileostomy. It is not
clear how long the baby will have the stoma for, but it will be corrected with a
reanastamosis eventually. The baby is going to continue antibiotics after discharge
per doctor recommendation.
Ethical Dilemma Statement
Should we suggest that the baby goes home on oral antibiotics after discharge?
The benefits of this would be that the delivery of the antibiotic is less invasive. It will
also decrease her risk for further infection. This could ... Show more content on

This can lead to more complications such as further infection or sepsis. IV antibiotic
therapy may result in phlebitis, extravasation injury, thrombosis, and bacteremia
(NCBI, 2015). This is dangerous for a newborn, especially since she is just getting
over an infection from her bowel perforation.
The author heard about this pediatric ethical dilemma in this way: My clinical
instructor allowed me to attend the NICU. Upon arrival of this unit, I was paired
off with a nurse who was taking care of two neonates. I shadowed the nurse and
assisted her with caring for the infants, and became aware of this baby s condition
and plan of care.
The people involved in this dilemma were the MD, the baby, her father, mother, and
nurse.
The Provisions from the ANA code of Ethics that apply to this dilemma are these:
One Provision that applies is Provision # 1, state the provision: The nurse practices
with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of
every person.
Another Provision that applies is Provision # 3, state the provision: The nurse
promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient.
The above stated provisions apply in this way: (Discuss each provision and how it

21. Life of Pi
In the beginning of Life of Pi, the author opens up with a detailed description of the
sloth, the different types, the speed, and the wittiness. It survives by being slow
and because of its slowness; it allows algae to grow on its body that acts like a
camouflage with the surrounding moss and foliage. The book starts out in first
person with the main character, Piscine Patel, talking about his name which means
pool in numerous languages. He found it weird that his parents named him Piscine
but neither of them ever took to the water. It was Pi s uncle, Mamaji, who was the
enthusiast of water. Mamaji had taught Pi how to swim. I lay on the bench and
fluttered my legs and scratched away at the sand with my hands, turning my head at

Along with the other supplies Pi found in the storage cabin were 10 orange
whistles which he realized could be used as training devices to keep himself on
top of the food chain and Richard Parker on the bottom instead of the other way
around. Pi seemed to be less confident and beginning to doubt his chance of
survival. Many times he contemplated jumping overboard or ways to get Richard
Parker off of the boat. Pi knew he had to do something to get off of the boat to stay
away from Richard Parker if he ever did attack so he decided to build a raft. He
used four buoyant oars, lifejackets, and buoyant ropes to put together this raft and he
stayed on this raft for several days. This book teaches you a lot of things you might
not expect in a novel.
In the novel are many facts from the survival guide that was on the boat such as
what to eat, how to catch fish and turtles, green water is shallower than blue water,
and interact with people or inanimate objects to keep from going crazy. This book
now has a double message. No longer is it just an entertaining novel but it is now a
survival guide. Pi now knew that his best chance of survival was being seen by
another boat or finding land and civilization. He concentrated now on Richard
Parker and ways to make the boat go faster. He realized that the raft was acting like
an anchor because the boat s broadside was facing the waves instead of the hull. This
came as an upset to
22. Research Essay on Southeast Asia
IH202: Southeast Asia: The Rice that Binds? Research Essay (10%) The definition
of the phrase Settlement pattern is associated with the understanding of how a
particular society used the available resources in its region. The phrase can also be
described as the actual land upon which a settlement is built. So what exactly is the
pattern of settlements in Southeast Asia? Some say that the pattern of human
settlement in Southeast Asia is dispersed settlements where buildings are spread
out; an example would be the rural areas of Philippines, where different villages are
at different parts of the country. Others say that it s more like linear settlements that
grow in a line, often alongside roads, river valleys or the coast, for... Show more

This not only makes similar settlers more comfortable to fit in but it also makes the
community more bonded. Climate also affects settlement patterns in numerous
ways. Colder countries tend to have lesser population than warmer countries. For
example, Alaska has the smallest population in the United States. Extreme climate
conditions may play a role too, Sometimes it is even impossible to inhabit that
area, due to the weather conditions. A land s geographical location can determine
whether an area has higher risk of experiencing an earthquake or not. Singapore is
considered very blessed as her geographical location is very well shielded by other
larger countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Furthermore, we do not sit on the
earthquake belt. However Japan and Indonesia are less fortunate, as they are located
right on the earthquake belt and are constantly experiencing earthquake every now
and then. If your settlement is located nearby to a river, there will be a reliable
source of food and transportation which adds to the land s desirability. Some people
are drawn to coastal areas as these areas offer a number of recreational activities, such
as surfing or wakeboarding and access to water transportation. Maybe they also
appreciate the value of waterfront property. In this essay, I have come to the
conclusion that Southeast Asia has more than one pattern of settlements. Instead, it
has three, namely, the dispersal settlement, the linear settlement and the nucleated

The Grapes of Wrath gives an in depth reality to how life should be lived even with
the obstacles you overcome. This is explained in the novel through the Joad family.
The Joad family consists of a weak family that is about to lose their land in
Oklahoma. There was no work for them in their home state due to the Great
Depressionand Dust Bowl. This leads them to take a chance and journey to
California for work. Although, they overcome many obstacles they learn new skills
and strengthen their family. The story takes place in the 1930 s in the states of
Oklahoma and California. At this time the United States is under a Great
Depression and some states are experiencing a great drought, most commonly
known as the Dust Bowl. Citizens experienced great struggles that no one should
ever go through. Some of these include: no food, no income, no shelter or eviction,
death and loss of loved ones. Banks breathe profits; they eat interest on money. If
they don t get it, they die the way you die without air (Steinbeck 39). Personally, I

the story which is inhumanity. It describes how trouble and disorder soon took over
due to lack of food and income. John Steinbeck was using this theme to
communicate to his readers. Compared to the beginning of the novel were
inhumanity begins to take place, Steinbeck provides a cosmetic change. To do this
he uses the most significant passage of the novel. At this part of the novel a boy
comes up to the boxcar they are living in asking for help. There had been days of
rain and nobody was able to work, therefore food was running out. Rose of Sharon
went and suckled the man which saved his life (Steinbeck 581). This describes a

Orwell Essay Response In George Orwell s essay Shooting an Elephant , the subject
is British imperialism. The birth of Orwell s essay was during the early 1900s, when
the British ruled Burma (Myanmar present day). His essay reflected/consisted of
Orwell as a young soldier trying to solve an over bearing conflict in which he had to
chose between shooting the elephant, which represented Britain s rule/imperialism or

The subject is an execution of a Burmese man, watched by Orwell, who was serving
as a guard for the British at that time. The unknown Burmese man is brought out to
be killed, Orwell sees that the man is still human, still living, and he sees the injustice
and terrible things that colonialism does to the natives.
Orwell s essay depicts inhumanity and is meant to show how colonialism only
serves to do cruelty in the world. Orwell would like his audience (people who are
active in politics or at least know the history/background on colonialism) ,to be
aware of this. It is most likely that Orwell would like his essay to reach out to
politically active people because he knows they are the ones who will likely get his
point and agree with him and possibly make a difference.
Orwell s essay shows how humans can become insensitive when it comes to taking a
life, throughout day to day repetition of murder. Orwell conveys the profound
message that a job sometimes forces people to act against their conscience. The
author also reveals the cruelty of hanging, and expresses his firm disapproval towards
capital
26. The United States Code Of Law
Prisoner #48551 083 is a 69 year old white male named Robert Philip Hanssen. The
former FBI counterintelligence agent turned Soviet spy is serving life in prison
without the possibility of parole at the Administrative Maximum facility in
Florence, Colorado, where he is kept in solitary confinement. The United States
government originally accused Hanssen of trading more than 6,000 pages of
confidential information to the KGB in exchange for cash and diamonds and of
blowing the covers of double agents that the FBI had recruited from the Soviets
(Willing Watson). At the time of Hanssen s arrest, then FBI Director Louis J.
Freeh said that the charges exemplify the most serious violations of law and threat
to national security ( Espionage case , 2001). This opinion should make us
question why, when traitors and spies should be executed in accordance to the
United States Code of Law, we as a country are so lenient in our punishments of
convicted spies such as Hanssen. Is it because we believe that we cannot decide if
someone lives or dies? Are we afraid to acknowledge that the information fed to
enemy governments could possibly mean the end of the United States as we know it?
Or even the end of our own lives? How many people should be allowed to betray our
country until we stop this issue before it is continually perpetuated? Although critics
believe that the death penalty should be abolished, I use a combination of retributivist
and deterrence arguments to argue that
27. Right After The Civil War
In the 1870s, right after the Civil war was over, begins a important period of time
for African Americans.Previously, in 1865 the 13th amendment was added to the
constitution, which abolishes slavery in the United States. Now, African Americas
are free for the first time. However, they realized that there is not point to have
freedom if they lack of economic support or equal oportunities than other citizens
have. Is on 1868, that the 14th amedment is ratified, which states that all persons
born in the United States are citizens, and shall have equal protection of the laws.
And on 1870, the 15th amendment is addressed to the constituion, stating that the
right to vote shall no be denied by any state. All these three amendments were ment
to protect the rights of african Americans and to improve their standards of living.
However, they had to face many differet issues from the 1870s to the turn of the
20th century because there were a lot of people against them. With the beginning of
reconstruction era in the south in 1870, African Americans are now seeking for a
bright future socially and economically speaking. In the presidential elections of
1876, Repubilcans challenge the results in the south, and congress appopints a
committee of 7 democrats, 7 republicans and 1 independent. The committee voted in
favor of Hayes by 8 7 votes and Hayes wins, even though, Samuel J. Tilden won the
poupular and electoral vote initially. This leads to the compromise of 1877 that will

Despite the advances made in both areas there has been minimal consideration of the
ways that strategic groups, not only industries and firms, influence HRM
strategies and practices in the pursuit of competitive advantage (Boxall, 2003).
Strategic group research identifies how groups of firms engage in similar
strategies in order to compete effectively within industries and shape industry
structure and competition. Panagiotou (2006 p. 440) defines strategic groups as:
[. . .] those groups of п¬Ѓrms within an industry, which are characterised by
similarities in their structure and competitive beliefs as well as their tendency to
follow similar strategies along key strategic dimensions in a specific operating
environment.
The performance differences between strategic groups are the focus for much of this
research, but mobility between groups and the structural dimensions of industries
have also received attention (Ferguson et al., 2000; Leask and Parker, 2006; Porter,
1980; Reger and Huff, 1993). As such strategic group research has developed as a
central research theme in strategic management. One of the most notable aspects of
strategic groups research is that it highlights and reinforces the importance of
particular industry contexts. This is an important
29. Use Of Social Media By Governments Across The World
Use of social media by governments across the world Many governments
worldwide have a presence on social media but with different approaches to use. For
instance, the actual executive institutions may not have an active presence, but the
heads of state have social media accounts, for example, the president of the United
States created a Twitter account for the president @POTUS, separate from
@Whitehouse and @Barackobama. In some instances, the world leaders are more
conversational than the institutions (Androsoff, 2015). According to Lufkens (2015)
86% of the UN member states have a presence on Twitter and 172 heads of State
have personal accounts. The most conversational world leaders are Paul Kagame
(Rwanda), Erna Solberg (Norway) and Mashi Rafael (Ecuador). The most robust
government Twitter accounts are to be found in European Union countries, North
America and Latin America. However, the most recent growth is to be found in
Africa, Middle East, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe countries (Androsoff, 2015).
Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and
Security Policy stated that Twitter has proven to be a revolutionary social network
even in politics. It is an extraordinary channel of diplomacy and of communication.
(Lufkens, 2015) Benefits of social media for the Kenyan government 1.Information
dissemination Social media provides a channel to rapidly spread and share
information to the general public (Blanchard, 2010). Government
30. The Namesake Minor Characters
People are often seen as the people they associate themselves with. Humanes begin
to evolve as they grow up and start overcoming baggage. Our loved ones can drift us
apart from our roots and that can be either positive or poor. In the novel The
Namesake, Lahiri uses the minor characters Kim, Ruth and Maxine throughout the
novelto highlight Gogol s characterization and journey of growing up and becoming
less understanding and distancing himself from his own culture. This statement relates
to numerous of immigrants who distance themselves from their own culture to the
one they are living in at the moment.
Lahiri creates the minor character of Kim to help explain Gogol s adventure to a
different culture than his. There are abounding moments throughout the novel
where Gogol tries to change his identity because he thinks people will make fun of
him because of his name. A major point in the book is when he is at a college party
and meets a girl named Kim. But he doesn t want to tell Kim his name. He doesn t
want to endure her reaction, to watch her lovely blue eyes grow wide (96). In the
following quote, Lahiri uses the internal conflict in Gogol, to have the reader
Castellanos 2 sympathize and relate to the circumstance that people can go through
when they are afraid what one might think. Gogol believes that by changing his
name, he will be accepted into the community around him. He is mainly concerned
about what girls think of him, rather than
31. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as sudden death of an infant
less than 1 year of age that is unexplained by history, and unexplained by
postmortem explanation including an autopsy (Hunt, Hauck, 2006). SIDS is the
leading cause of death within the first year of life in the developed world
(Vennenman et al., 2009). In the west, the yearly incidence of sudden death is 1.3
7.5 per 100,000 in the pediatric population beyond infancy (Mei Hwan, 2010). In
order to find a correlation between SIDS and breastfeeding, a German study was
conducted. The study concluded that exclusive breastfeeding was correlated with
reduction in SIDS rather than partial feeding, which on its own was associated with
decrease in SIDS compared to not breastfeeding.
32. My First Day Of Dance
Normally I would be bouncing off the walls waiting for my mom to unlock the car
doors. But not that day. That day was different. That day I was climbing through the
back seats begging not to get out of the car.
It was my first day of dance class at The Beat Dance Company and I was terrified. I m
not going to make any friends, nobody is going to like me, the teacher is going to be
mean. I was standing in the hallway of my new dance studio crying to my mom that I
did not want to go in when the teacher came out to get us. The teacher was towering
over me like she was a skyscraper and I was an ant. She had very straight red hair and
her face was covered in freckles. She was wearing a bright purple leotard with a black

So we all listened and stood up and I went to the back corner. Payton followed me as
the teacher told us to spread apart.
Okay so the first thing we are going to do today is get a little warmed up and then
probably do a little bit of stretching, the teacher told us.
The teacher started to do jumping jacks and so did all the other girls so I joined in.
Payton started asking me questions just to try to get to know me. In the dance
studio two walls were longer than the other two. On one of the long walls are all of
the mirrors and on the other one is a window (so that the parents can watch) and the
door is also on that wall. Little did Payton and I know that our parents were talking
too. They saw how much we were talking and decided to get each others numbers.
Meanwhile, the teacher had told us to now move to one side of the wall and that
we were going to do across the floor. Payton and I stood at the back of the first line
and talked until it was our turn to go across. All of the sudden the music stopped
and all I heard the teacher yelled was, Come on ladies. You have to know when it is
your turn to go. The teacher was referring to me and Payton. I turned to Payton and
we couldn t help but laugh.
What s so funny girls, the teacher didn t seem very happy.
Nothing, Payton said franticly.
It won t happen again right? the teacher asked us.
No ma am, Payton and I joked.

33. Portrait of a Lady
First written in the 1880s and extensively revised in 1908, The Portrait of a Lady is
often considered to be James s greatest achievement. In it, he explored many of his
most characteristic themes, including the conflict between American individualism
and European social custom and the situation of Americans in Europe. James
proclaimed that The only reason for the existence of a novel is that it does attempt to
represent reality. Plot was for him but the extension of character. The novel must
show rather than tell he was interested in why people did as they did, rather than
simply in what they did; motive was more important than deed. The observer of the

But the narrative technique did not allow for it. So in the end The portrait of the
Lady is finally not a modernist novel. There is no such a thing yet as the autonomy
of the character; truly an exploration of a character s psychological frame or mind,
options. In a way Isabel remains emplotted by James. Like most of James s fiction
of the 1870s, and the majority of his writing for the rest of his career, Portrait
focuses on a group of expatriate Americans in England and Europe. Leisured,
cultured, but just a bit bored, Daniel Touchett and his son Ralph are idly passing
their time at Daniel s country estate, Gardencourt, but find themselves reenergized
when Daniel s all but estranged wife, Lydia, brings with her to England her niece, a
beautiful and enthusiastic orphan named Isabel Archer. Isabel is everything these
men are not: lively, enthusiastic, and alert, she is a less flirtatious, more thoughtful
version of Daisy Miller. But this American Girl, too, has the resistance to convention
that both marks the type and makes its fate so problematic; when her Aunt Lydia
reproaches her for staying up late to talk to Ralph and his friend, Lord Warburton,
Isabel thanks her for informing her of the social prohibition but claims that she wants
this knowledge only so as to choose whether to follow it. Despite, or perhaps because
of, this very American insistence on freedom of choice, Isabel attracts one suitor after
another: first Lord Warburton; then

In the case 7, the elected team leader, Christine, was worried that her group will not
be able to do on the assigned project, since one member of the group did not fully
complete the work (Schermerhorn, Osborn, Uhl Bien, Hunt, 2012). In my opinion,
Christine did not understand the team development stages very well, thus she lost the
control over her group. According to Shermerhorn et al. (2012), there are 5 team
development stages that each newly created team goes through: forming, storming
norming, performing and adjourning. During the initial forming stage, members of
the formed team are become acquainted with each other and discuss their strengths
and weaknesses (Schermerhorn at al., 2012). In my opinion, Christine knew a little
about her teammates, since she described Diane being a quiet, Janet reliable, Steve
business oriented and Mike as a clown (Shermerhorn et al., 2012). However, she did
not recognize that Mike s personality is different from the other group members and
did not address this issue with anybody. In the second team development stage,
storming, the newly created teams have to deal with the stress in defining their roles
and responsibilities for the tasks (Shermerhorn et al., 2012). In my opinion, Christine
s team never completed this stage. Mikes jokes were understood as being
uncooperative that created tension in the team and alienated him from the team.
According to Mackin (2011), as the tension rises during the storming stage, the

manners. It is still a pestilence in the British society. In the post war Britain, a new
innovative literary movement emerged as The Angry Young Men . In this
movement, the members were mostly a group of British playwrights, who were a
part of working and middle classand later became prominent in the 1950 s. The main
concern of these angry young men was infuriated with circumstances and they denied
incorporating with the destitute social order and shown spontaneous solidarity with
the working classes. Referred to as Kitchen Sink Realism , the literary works began

The set of social values to which Colonel, his family, and his social circle were
different from the social values of Jimmy Porter s class.
The love of the couple turned into a storm in the cyclone of class conflict during
their life in Hugh s house. Jimmy was pathetically wrecked that Alison did not accept
his social circle. The outcome of this action, a very tense atmosphere was generated.
Jimmy under Hugh s influence, treated Alison as a hostage from the upper social class.
Alison was utterly disgusted with such barbaric behavior. She found it outrageous
to believe that two literate people like Jimmy and Hugh, could be so ruthless,
savage. Hugh decided to go abroad. Both Jimmy and Hugh s mother came to view
that Alison was responsible for Hugh s departure. As a result, Jimmy flares to dislike
his wife. He also felt that she adopted an indifferent attitude to his concerns and
convictions; needs and necessities. He became obsessed with a sense of betrayal.
After Hugh s migration, Jimmy and Alison took another flat. Cliff Lewis, another
friend of Jimmy came to live near them. Fortunately for them, Alison and Cliff
became genuinely fond of each other. Cliff tried his best to minimize the conflict
between the married couple. But, in spite of Cliff s determined efforts to prevent the
conflict from the burst, Jimmy s insults deliberately become more and more
unbearable. Whatever the subject under

Culture and Identity: Boomerang and Recycle
Throughout the Australia s history, the boomerang is one of most distinctive and
representative symbol which is strongly associated with Aboriginal culture.According
to the research, Australia is not the birthplace of the boomerang. In fact, the
boomerang has existed in other parts of the world for thousands of years. (Kevin,
2015) It is speculated that the initial aim of developing boomerang is used by hunting
animals. Although the older boomerang as a hunting weapon has been used
throughout Africa and Europe, Australian Aboriginal boomerangs already have ten
thousands years of history. (Kevin, 2015) With the development of boomerangs,...

41. Interview With a Walgreens Manager Essay
Since 1901, Walgreens has had a strong passion for customer service. The founder,
Charles Walgreens, goal was to create a drugstore that was like no other. He said
that for as many drugstores as he had worked at, he had never worked for one that
had a focus for good customer service and low prices. Walgreens has grown by
leaps and bounds since 1901 and is now recognized as the leader in the market with
over 7000 stores. Charles Walgreen had an eye for good managers. He said he was
able to pick people that he knew were smarter than him so to promote them and
make them the heads of his drugstores. As a store manager, not only is it your job to
run a store which includes ordering, customer care, and inventory control, but also it

I believe this may be one of the only job types out there where everything is up to
one person. To become a store manager is not easy. This involves longevity with
the company, college education, previous management experience, and have been
an assistant manager and executive assistant manager for a total of 3 years with
the company. While Walgreens has its credentials it expects from an applicant on
paper, my interviewee feels that it is much more than that. When asked what
KSAOs he suggests for one to be a good store manager he said number one they
must possess strong leadership. He stated that one can have 10 degrees form the
best universities and have the best interviewing skill and they might even get the
job but once in the position to succeed, they must possess leadership or they will
fail. His definition of leadership was unique. He pulled a piece of paper out of his
wallet and gave it to me. It said No one could be a great leader unless he takes
genuine joy in the success of those under him W. A. Nanc. He stated that the
company will tell you 30 things to do in a day and want them to be done by the
end of the day but it is crucial to ask yourself what is best for the customer and
make the decision. This leads to the second KASO necessary; be a decision maker.
With the economy the way it is, he suggested, and with the cutbacks that the company
has made, we have to

Many European countries sent explorers to discover a new sea route to the East
Indies, which were abundant with spices and valuable trading items. Vasco da
Gama had made many brave accomplishments. On November 22, 1497 he rounded
the Cape of Good Hope. Da Gama s first route took him closer to South America,
but he had to go out that far to avoid the trouble of the coast. Unexpectedly, the first
Portuguese sailors experienced stormy weather, strong winds, and massive
currents closer to Africa. Da Gama shortened time of the trip by increasing the
miles in order to avoid potential hazardous disasters of the coast. By going so far
out from the coast, Vasco s crew sailed the longest voyage, which covered four
thousand miles before the winds blew them back to Africa just north of the Cape
of Good Hope. After setting sail once again, Vasco went so far west, that he was
only six hundred miles away from South America. On November 4th, after ninety
six days in open seas, da Gama reached the Cape of Good Hope in half the time as
Dias. Da Gama s stop in Africa, on the second half of his voyage, showed him the
real life of the African people. Many were friendly. The differences between them
were met with delight, trading, music, and dancing. Although, in the end, the
Africans refused to help and destroyed the stone markers (called Padroes) and
desecrated sacred crosses, which da Gama left to mark his route and claim territory
for Portuguese trading posts. A few days later da Gama stopped in Mossel Bay to
leave the supply ship behind, because it wasn t needed any more. After Mossel
Bay, da Gama took a stop in Mozambique to recover and trade with the natives as
well as build another Padroes. While da Gama was in Mozambique, he saw the most
amazing riches from India. One sailor wrote in his diary that Arab ships were laden
with gold, silver, cloves, pepper, ginger, pearls, jewels, and rubies... all of which were

use cynicism to make the men going through their crisis believe if they get the object
of their desire, they will be the coolest guy on the block.
This advertisement portrays the type of man that every man wants to be as well as
the type of woman every man wants to be with; really hitting the mid life crisis bone
hard. He s a middle aged man that obviously has stayed in shape his whole life.
Most middle aged men are married with kids and a little gut hanging over their belt.
When the men reading this ad see a man like David Beckham, they start questioning if
they look like that to other women. In the process, the ad actually gives an unintended
effect to destroy self esteem. When the advertisement hurts that self esteem, men tend
