Professional Goal Essay
Writing an essay on the topic of professional goals can be both challenging and rewarding. The
difficulty lies in the need to articulate one's aspirations, achievements, and future plans in a
coherent and compelling manner. It requires introspection, a clear understanding of personal and
career objectives, and the ability to convey these thoughts effectively to the reader.
Crafting a professional goal essay involves the challenge of striking the right balance between
humility and confidence. It necessitates the skill to showcase accomplishments without sounding
boastful and to outline future plans with a sense of purpose. The writer must convey passion,
determination, and a strategic approach to achieving their goals, making the essay persuasive and
engaging.
Moreover, the challenge extends to organizing ideas logically, maintaining a consistent tone
throughout the essay, and ensuring that the narrative flows seamlessly. A well-structured essay
should capture the reader's attention from the introduction, maintain their interest in the body,
and leave a lasting impression with a strong conclusion.
While the difficulty lies in presenting a unique and genuine perspective, the reward comes from
the opportunity to reflect on personal growth and future ambitions. The process of writing such
an essay allows individuals to clarify their goals, identify areas for improvement, and envision a
roadmap for their professional development.
In conclusion, tackling a professional goal essay involves navigating the delicate balance of self-
reflection and effective communication. It demands the ability to convey aspirations and plans
with authenticity and clarity. However, the process is not without its rewards, as it provides a
platform for self-discovery and sets the foundation for future success.

What Are The 8 Features Of Crime
8 Features of Crime
There are eight essential factors that are found every crime and therefore make up the
legal concept as to what crime is. The eight concepts are actus reus, mens rea,
concurrence, causation, harm, legality, necessary attendant circumstances, and
punishment. Actus reus means guilty act, or any act that is in violation of the law.
This term describes the physical not the mental act of committing a crime.Omission to
act is also represented under this act, for example child neglect where a parent or
guardian does not fulfill their duties that are afforded to a child. Another part to
this is also threatening to act which can be criminal as well. If you tell someone
that you re going to murder them can get one into trouble because threats,
especially those against the president, are taken very seriously.Attempted murder
is also illegal even if it is not accomplished if one is caught in the act or of doing
the act then they can be arrested. Conspiring to commit an illegal act and that can
be proven is illegal as well. One example is if you were to have this elaborate plan
to rob a very prominent bank and you are communicating with people and making
plans of the building then that is enough to get you in trouble for conspiring. These
are the concepts that fall under actus reus . The next idea of crime is mens rea which
is kind of like partner to actus rea. Except mens rea is the state of mind that
accompanies a criminal act. There are four types of mens

White drivers were stopped only 10 percent. The disparity will be greater if black
drivers were stopped more frequently than white drivers. There are other disparities
such as searches, tickets, arrests and license suspensions. This research also
showed that white drivers were both ticketed and searched at lower rates than
black and Hispanic drivers. An NBC report based on the Bureau of Justice
Statistics states that Blacks 9.5 percent and Hispanics 8.8 percent were more
likely to be searched than whites 3.6 percent. There were slight but statistically
insignificant declines compared with the 2002 report in the percentages of blacks

whites 2.1 percent to be arrested. Hispanic drivers were arrested 3.1 percent of the

Someone s situations, experiences, obstacles, and goals can all contribute to the

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky, is about Charlie, the

Throughout the book, there is a significant connection with winter and the main
character, Lia. Winter in the book is a symbol of how she is broken and physically
sick from her disorder anorexia. When Lia goes to the same motel her best friend,
Cassie died in, she struggles to become stable with her disorder and considers
extreme choices that affect her later in the book. Lia says, If I really want to die,
right now....I could walk into the blizzard and lie down in the snow and bleed out.
Hypothermia and blood loss is like going to sleep (265). Lia is going through an
ongoing battle with herself that makes her view on life careless. Anderson uses
specific words like hypothermia , blizzard and snow to emphasize the symbolism
of winter in the main character s life throughout the book. The snow being frozen
and penetrating explains one of the symptoms of anorexia, which is feeling cold.
In addition to this, Lia s mentions of topics relating to winter is her way of
expressing how she is in a frozen state of being dead and alive, all from her disorder.
However, at the end of the book, Lia has overcome this past, saying, I am thawing
(Anderson, 278). This implies how the past of Lia s ongoing battle with anorexia
has made her discover who she was a person at the end of the book. This also
expressed how winter is the symbol of how she has struggled with
Media And Media
The mass media is an important factor when it comes to getting a message across to
the public. No specific community can do without media as it is a crucial element to
society. The media helps provide individuals things that they need the most, that
being information. Sometimes this information is considered injurious and appalling,
whereas other times it normal. The messages that are taken from the media are based
off of one s own faith and knowledge, in accordance to the reinforcement theory
(Jetter, 2017). The reinforcement theory argues that you can change someone s
perspective or behavior by using reinforcement, punishment and extinction.
Punishments are used to avoid the behavior you do, rewards are used to support the
behavior you want and lastly extinction represents stopping an individual from acting
upon a learned behavior.
Although terrorism cannot be defined in one specific definition, it can be depicted as
the use of violence against innocent individuals to bring political change through the
means of fear . Majority of the time, terrorist attacks are often not directly intended
for an exact individual, rather, are done to convey a memorandum (Altheide, 2007).
This can potentially signify that the media paying a large amount of attention to
terrorist organizations, may further encourage them to continue their violence. The
correlation between terrorist and the media is symbiotic as terrorist organizations
terrorize in order to seek publicity for the sole

fifth largest retailer by sales revenue in the United States behind Wal Mart, The
Home Depot, Kroger and Costco. The company is ranked 33rd on the 2007 Fortune

Analysis Of The Constitution And The Constitution
Dahl and the Constitution James Madison and the rest of the Founders of the
Constitution undeniably founded a government that has withstood the test of time.
The question that Robert Dahl poses in How Democratic Is the American
Constitution? is whether this form of government and specifically the Constitution is
as democratic as it should be and focuses on the Constitution s shortcomings. Dahl
argues that the constitution is much less democratic than it ought to be. Madison, on
the other hand, had doubts about the effectiveness and practicality of a purely
democratic form of government and fought for a republic with checks on power. I
believe that the Constitution should be evaluated according to how it serves the
American population today. Americans are raised through public schooling and
popular culture to view the Constitution as nearly infallible and those that wrote it as
inspired. However, it is clearly not a perfect document. After the bill of rights there
has come about seventeen additional amendments, or small changes by definition, to
the original document. It intentionally contained no mention of one of the most
egregious aspects of American history slavery. Despite all of these things, I agree
with Madison that the Constitution needed to limit democracy in order to provide a
strong enough national government that would not endanger personal liberty. Society
has changed quite a bit since the original crafting of the Constitution in 1787 which
has prompted

National Anthem Pros And Cons

As Americans, we are here today because of our fellow citizens who have made the
sacrifice to bravely serve our country. Nearly 108 million people have died fighting
for our freedom during war. To stand during the National Anthem should not be an
option nor up for debate. I will proudly stand with unity as a sign of respect.
The Flag Code covers all aspects of etiquette relating to the Stars and Stripes,
including how to properly behave when the anthem is played. The code is never
enforced, however, there is no punishment for breaching it. We as Americans

The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our
belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the
veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their life for the defense of our
country to attain peace throughout the world. The forth fold represents our
weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is Him we turn in times
of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The fifth fold is a tribute
to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur Our country, in dealing with
other countries, may she always be right: but is it still our country, right or wrong.
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge
allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it
stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The
seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forced that
we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they are found
within or without the boundaries of our republic. The eighth fold is a tribute to the
one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of
day. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, and mothers. For it has been through

Outliers Malcolm Gladwell Essay
I place my beautiful Howarth XL gently back in its case. In the lights it shines
brightly, and if the lights hit it just right, it sparkles and blinds. The Grenadilla wood
at first looks flawless and black in color, yet as one peers closer a rich brown color
becomes visible and the wood grains show it is real. I close the case, and as I walk
from the room I turn off the lights. One hour of practice down, thousands more to go.
Or so I am told. I recently read a book called Outliers: The Story of Success by
Malcolm Gladwell. In it Gladwell tells the stories of successful people and explains
how they became successful based on their circumstances, situations, and cultural
legacies. In particular, Gladwell wrote a chapter about what has become to be
known as The 10,000 Hour Rule. This rule states that after 10,000 hours of practice a
person, no matter who they are, will be an expert at that skill. Although I agree with
Gladwell in his knowledge, practice, and a lot of it, is necessary to become an expert
in something, I cannot accept his statement that 10,000 hours ... Show more content

Gladwell never explicitly mentions the type of practice required to achieve
mastery, only how many hours. To support this, he uses examples of Steve Jobs
and his computer skills, and The Beatles, when they would perform many hours a
day early in their career. But practice is not all equal. Deliberate practice is a term
used to describe when a person practices attentively. There is no loss of focus in this
type of practicing and the person often pushes themselves to the limits constantly.

American Industrial Worker Essay
In the span of time in between 1865 and 1900 there had been various improvements
in technology which paved the way for industrialization. Along with expanding
industry came the demand for a work force, then being immigrants and native born
Americans. The American industrial worker had suffered at the hands of their
employer with the cutting of wages, harsh work environments, and lack of support.
Labor unions brought people together in order to establish a standard for the working
environment of an American industrial worker. In 1868 Abram S. Hewitt introduced
the open hearth process, a method for making steel, to the United States. This process
allowed for steel to be made in vast quantities. This opened the way for the
American steel industry, which needed workers in order to mine the iron and coal
necessary for the production of steel and then the production of steel itself. Steel was
then used to for railroads. Another use of steel was the eventual creation of
skyscrapers, which used steel support frames in place of wooden support frames,
allowing them to create... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With little regard for the individual a company can ignore the comfort of the
individual employee that is easily replaceable. This is made possible through the
advancements in technology which disregarded the need for an artisan. Immigrants
would be finagled into working in factories for lower pay than others. The
weakness of the worker s unions and organizations for improving the life quality of
a worker made little to no progress. The American industrial worker had sacrificed
their quality of life in exchange for work to continue living. Middle class workers
were able to enjoy luxuries not previously available to them. In all, an improvement in
technology and influx of immigrants just made workers disposable, and workers had
little support, representation, and influince in the
Personal Savings For American s As A Whole
Exactly how much is enough? Plain and simple, one can never have enough when
it comes to cold, hard cash. However, it is becoming more and more prevalent to
hardly have any at all, especially when referring to savings. People are beginning to
hit that age where they can no longer work for their money and have to rely on the
money that they have been savingup; Or, in this case, the lack of the money that they
have been saving up. For many Americans today, the real query seems to be Exactly
how much can I just barely get by on?
Personal savings for American s as a whole has been rapidly declining for the past
two decades. Starting out at about 9% in the 1980 s, the average amount of savings
that American s had to start out the new century was almost at 0%. The decline
suggests a constriction of consumer credit and a weakening in consumer confidence
(Ellen, Wiener, Fitzgerald 58). The lack of consumer confidence can easily be
blamed on the recession of 2009. Americans are no longer confident in their
retirement savings.
The question looms over the heads of aging citizens each year: How can Americans
save enough money for retirement? The issue brings about many questions and
interest on why this is the case and how it can be resolved. Dr. M Paula Fitzgerald,

has a huge effect on the operations. 5
Background Of The Progressive Era
In the late 19th century, when a period of social activism and economic reform,
historically known as the Progressive Era (Maligned), coincided with the capitalistic
expansion at an unprecedented rate, a series of ideas on eradicating systematic
soldiering and increasing the overall productivity quiet sprouted at steel industry, later
growing into the theories of scientific managementin the next two decades. Scientific
management, also known as Taylorism, was one of the earliest attempts to apply
scientific methods to optimize of management and achieve economic efficiency. Its
founder, Frederick Winslow Taylor, was also the prominent figure in the Efficiency
Movement in the U.S. The principles of scientific management have shaped
American industry and on management science in three major ways since the 1880s.
On the corporate level, scientific management had streamlined manufacturing
process; on the individual level, it instilled many fundamental management ideas into
the American industry; as the leading thought during the Progressive Era, it laid the
foundation for various disciplines, many of which serve as guidelines even for
modern day industries.
Background Origin of Taylorism:
Frederick Taylor s fundamental thoughts on scientific management dated back to
early 1880s when he was employed at Midvale Steel Company and observed his
coworkers soldiering at work. In the following two decades, he moved around
different companies while developing his management theory
Charles Darwin And Darwin s Theories On The Human...
When Charles Darwin published The Origen of Species in 1859, he knew the
asseverations made in it would cause a rift in the scientific community of his day.
Also, he knew that his work would not be received by humanity with open arms
because of the dogmatic idea of creation that was predominant in his time.
Nonetheless, he went ahead and published the results of his extensive and detailed
work because he knew, that not doing so would cause him to lose the right to claim
this discovery for himself. At first, the scientific community attacked his arguments
because they were against the traditional beliefs, but eventually his ideas began to
gain ground until they became one of the pillars of modern science. Upon
considering these facts, I believe it is important to ponder on the reasons behind the
opposition to Darwin s ideas, how he managed to convey them, and more importantly
how these ideas helped shape our understanding of biological history. Before even
talking about The Origen of Speciesor Darwin s theories it is important to discuss
the historical context in which this book was first published. Up to this point in
history, the origin of all life on the planet had been explained using a theological
approach. In other words, God had created the world along with all its vegetation,
then created all the animals, and then created humans as the center of creation.
According to this view, all animals, trees, and landscapes we see today are the same
that existed when Adam and

BDSM seems to be a more theatrical fulfillment of one s sexual discovery and an
escape from societal expectations. Whether we are slaves to our masters, or slaves to
our jobs and other social obligations we are submissive to some degree. I further
engage into the ideas that though BDSM seems unnatural, violent, and foreign that
maybe it is an elaborate representation of our everyday life. Yoko Ono said in an
interview once that When you are suffering, you become more understanding about
yourself, but also about other people s sufferings too. That s the first step to
understand somebody is to understand their sufferings. So then love follows.
(Vallmer, Yoko Ono on Lennon, Love, Feminism, and Japan ). Relating this quote
back to BDSM, maybe it is through this pain exposure that some are able to better
understand themselves and/or the people around them. That with this pain they learn
to better trust those around them, communicate more effectively, and be open to the
ideas to each experience they encounter, whether it that be in or out of the
Stylistic Devices In The Opening Ceremony
Another tendency noted in the British newspapers is the frequent use of stylistic
devices such as oxymoron, antithesis or paradoxes, in order to describe the opening
ceremony and Britain. Most of them were retrieved from The Guardian, but they
were present in all the newspapers:
The latter sentence suggests that the opening ceremony, and by extension the country
itself, tends to be described as a contradictory entity. This tendency is confirmed
above all in The Guardian and in The Times. As far as the adjectives are concerned,
one can see that The Guardian is more objective than The Independent, which only
showcased Britain and the opening ceremony under a very positive light. However, a
majority of positive qualifications were used, and Matthew Caines, from The
Guardian, pointed out that the newspaper was pretty much all out of adjectives to
describe the spectacle.

Reaction to Boyle s Socialist Vision of the United Kingdom
Whereas the majority of the audience praised the opening ceremony, some did not
agree with the general burst of enthusiasm. As mentioned in a previous section, one
recurrent negative adjective that was used in all of the newspapers that have been
analysed is the word leftie .
That controversy ensued from a series of tweets posted by the British Conservative
Member of Parliament for Cannock Chase, Aidan Burley, on July 27, 2012, during
the London 2012 opening ceremony. The MP fiercely denounced the social and
multicultural aspect depicted in the spectacle, labelling it leftie, multicultural crap .
The actual tweets were:
The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen more than Beijing, the capital of a
Communist state! Welfare Tribute next?
Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multicultural

Romeo And Juliet By Baz Luhrmann Essay
Baz Luhrmann adaptation of William Shakespeare s Romeo Juliet is modernised
to convey the meaning of the original play more appealing to today s audience. He
keeps the Shakespearian language but changes the props, clothing, setting and
music. By using these different techniques he makes the movie effective to the
audience. The prologue directed by Baz Luhrmann is a futuristic interpretation of
Shakespeare s 16th century play. The prologue shows the tv newsreader describing
the rivalry in Verona Beach and the deadly feud between Romeo s Montague
family and the Capulet family of Juliet. Baz Luhrmann uses the newsreader as the
narrator compared to Shakespeare s play. He uses the prologue to locate the action
in the modern fictional Verona Beach USA, and to introduce the feuding families.
The news reporter is reading Shakespeare s original text and tells the events that
will lead to the tragic deaths of the star crossed lovers . Although Baz Luhrmann s
prologue is delivered different from the original play the language is still the same.

He uses a variety of effects in the movie and draws the audience to the story by

Images of office towers of the family s names represent their wealth and their

Descartes Dualism Argument
Descartes dualism argument poses issues for some.
Its common knowledge that, as a matter of a law in science, energy/matter cannot be
created nor destroyed, but can transform from one form to another. That said, if the
mind and body only have a causal relationship, not an interactive one, how does one
argue the change in energy levels that s seen through brain scans? Dualists may argue
this as a new energy created by this causal relationship, but this violates the energy
matter law of science. Also, dualism argues that the mind and body are two separate
part. If two pieces don t make a whole, and are entirely separate, then they have no
common/shareable properties, and they don t interact whatsoever. That said, the mind
and body do interact. Consider when one consciously decides to move their arm, or
strike a yoga pose it s a thought/idea created by the mind, which causes the physical
action through their interactive relationship.
Among the issues with his belief of the mind and body plus how the operate is there
connection. Descartes only connection of the two in the Pineal gland. This would
mean everything would have to go through gland. Although very important in

Identity In Sandra Cisneros s The House On Mango Street
The House On Mango Street
Though Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street brings up several aspects of
young Esperanza s internal conflict, her discovering what comprises her identity is
the most prominent point throughout the story. While the reader watches a young
girl grow up, they also watch her question all of her observations that shape her
perception of herself. As she deals with life s harsh reality in her low income
neighborhood, the hardships she faces make her question who she really is, and what
defines her.
One of the reasons that it can be complicated for Esperanza to find out who she is, is
that gender roles are being forced upon her future constantly. From her own family, to
her friends abusive fathers, she is shown that her culture ...[doesn t] like their
women strong (Cisneros 10). In the Vignette titled My Name , Esperanza explains
the struggles that she has with the personal meaning she has put behind it. She
explains how her grandma was like her, a wild horse of a woman (Cisneros 11) and
that she was forced into a sad married life. This causes confusion with her identity,
because she doesn t want to inherit her [grandmother s lonely] place by the window.
(Cisneros 11) However, she does want to be her own, strong self. Esperanza learning
how this influences her identity as the book continues will teach her to ignore gender
roles and pay attention to what she feels is most important to her.
Another way that Esperanza has trouble with her identity is the fact that she
ascotiates living on Mango Street directly with who she is. Throughout the book,
she struggles with her house not being a home to her, and that it isn t the place she
thought it would be. When she says that she needs a house she can point to. But
this isn t it. (Cisneros 5) in the first vignette House on Mango Street , you can feel
her embarrasment in the where she lives. Esperanza is the type of person who feels
as if certain items reflect who you are. For example, when the reader hears about her
expectations of a house with three washrooms...[with] trees around it, a great big
yard and grass growing without a fence. (Cisneros 4), she later explains how she is
ashamed of her current living situation compared to
Desert Solitaire Summary
Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness is the work for which Abbey is best
known and by which he is most frequently defined. It contains his views on a
variety of subjects, from the problems of the United States Park Service to an angry
indictment of the evils of technology masquerading under the guise of progress. No
voice is more eloquent in the praise of America s remaining wilderness nor more
vitriolic in attacking those who would exploit and destroy it for profit. In the
introduction to Desert Solitaire, Abbey informs his readers that he has combined the
experiences of three summers spent as a park ranger at Arches National Monument
into one for the sake of narrative consistency. He writes that the first two summers

Abbey and Newcomb camp at the mouth of the Escalante River, where it joins the
Colorado. Newcomb remains behind to fish for catfish while the adventurous
Abbey explores upstream. He wanders up the labyrinthine canyon past untouched
cliff dwellings of the Anasazi, the ancient people who inhabited the land before the
Navajo. He realizes that these, too, will be submerged under the flooding water of
the Colorado. Moreover, Abbey points out that the waters of Lake Powell will
irrigate no land, will grow no crops. Instead, the trapped water will produce power
power to make possible the continued urban sprawl of Phoenix and Albuquerque
and provide an aquatic playground for well to do suburbanites, whose noisy
powerboats will drown out the cry of the red tailed hawk, the calls of the killdeer
and sandpiper. When Abbey returns down the canyon at nightfall to rejoin his
fellow adventurer Newcomb, he is greeted by the smell of cooking catfish and the
night sounds of the river. He reflects that this is all the paradise that is needed. The
beauty of the place is heartbreaking, as is the tragedy of its imminent disappearance
under mud and water. As Abbey and Newcomb approach the construction zone of
the dam, a large sign that Abbey derisively dubs first billboard erected in Glen
Canyon reminds them that government, in the service of greed, is willing to
prosecute those who would trespass on the march of progress. The lyricism of
Understanding The Limitations Of A Person With Mcardle

In 2005, my husband was forced to retire from a job at Georgia Pacific. This was a
job that he had been working at for thirty three years. The muscles in his arms were
tearing for no reason that we knew of and he was having some other health
problems. It was very upsetting to both of us not knowing the outcome about his
health and now no income as well. We had seen many doctors on many different
occasions. We kept hitting a dead end. Finally, we were able to see a new doctor, a
neurologist, and after examining my husband, he immediately said to my husband,
you have McArdle s disease. It was a term that I was not familiar with at all. My
heart dropped and I was not sure what we were up against. Understanding the
limitations of a person with McArdle s disease is the best way to live with it.
What is McArdle s disease? It is a rare skeletal muscle disorder (Choleva, A.J. 2011).
1 in 100,000 persons is affected by the disease. The disease gets its name from Dr.
Brian McArdle. McArdle s disease is caused by a missing enzyme, myophosphorylase
C. This breaks down glycogen (which is the body form of stored energy) into glucose
(sugar).
People who have McArdle s disease often appear lazy. Just to look at them, they
seem to be very healthy. In order for someone to have the disease both parents
would have to have the defective gene. This is called autosomal recessive
inheritance pattern ( McArdle s Disease Overview Facts June 2014). You are born
with the disease but some

the network works, the kind of cables that are used, the amount of network switches

This connection point allows all devices that are housed in a building to connect
and communicate at an efficient rate. Therefore the employees and students who
are able to connect to the network are more productive and but also do not have any
cross talking issues, loss of Internet speed or connectivity issues with other devices
like printers and scanners within the network(Cisco). There were many networking
terms used in this video. There were five that stood out to me: 1.Distribution Layer:
The Distribution layer ensures that packets are properly routed between subnets and
VLANs in your enterprise. This layer is known as the Workgroup layer. This layer
includes LAN based routers and layer 3 switches (MCMCS). 2.Access Layer: The
Access layer ensures that packets are delivered to end user computer. This layer is
also known as the desktop layer since it focuses on connecting client nodes, such as
workstations to the network. This layer involves hubs and switches (MCMCS).
3.Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF): IDF is a free standing or wall mounted
rack for managing and interconnecting the telecommunications cable between end
user devices and a main distribution frame (MDF) (techtarget). 4.Switch: A switch is
a device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to the specific
output port that will take the data toward its intended destination in a

Whedon In William Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
I was not sure how to feel when I learned that my favorite producer had just released
what was being marketed as a modern adaptation of my favorite of Shakespeare s
comedies, Much Ado About Nothing. I loved Whedon s cult classics such as Buffy
the Vampire Slayer since the shows had strong female characters who were
unapologetic of their sexuality and were revolutionary in the way the shows
portrayed queer relationships; however, his more recent work had left a bad taste in
my mouth (namely Cabin in the Woods) since the movies seemed to betray the

Preservation In Beowulf
Preservation is of utmost importance to human kind preservation of one s culture,
pastimes, and even individual life. This longing for immortality has existed since
humanity s origin and has resulted in fine works of art relished by many today. The
Anglo Saxons preserved their own identities through their literature, such as the epic
poem, Beowulf. Much of Beowulf s value today stems largely from its genre s
definition. Beowulf s primary focus follows the profound, often supernatural
escapades of its epic hero, the human embodiment of the cultural values of his
contemporaries, who inevitably determines the fate of the people he represents,
defining the work as an indisputably epic poem (Wheeler). Beowulf, the principle
character whom the epic

Homosexuality And The Effects Of The Stonewall Riots
The Stonewall Riots highlighted a key issue in the late 1960s American society.
Homosexuality was often seen as an illness and a sin to most people. For example, in
April 1952 homosexuality was deemed a sociopathic mental disorder by the American
Psychiatric Association (CNN). This idea was heightened in American society
because it was being taught that being gaywas one of the worst things an American
can be; showing videos such as Boys Beware . This all changed after the conflict at
the Stonewall Inn; located in New York on Christopher Street. The Stonewall Inn
was the place where gays and lesbians would flock to, to feel accepted for once in
their lives as many of them ran away or were disowned by their own families. Even
though Stonewall was a place of freedom, it was also a place for fear as the police
would constantly raid the bar to make sure that alcohol was not being served to
gays, as the New York State Liquor Authority deemed it illegal to serve homosexuals.
Lasting only three days, the riots were able to help start the transformation of
American society to become what it is today. The lack of a formal compromise
between the nation and the LGBTcommunity was an advantage for the effects of
Stonewall to spread as the conflict was able to bring a wave of acceptance and
pushed many of history s gay role models to feel inspired to stand up.
Unlike most issues in history there was no compromise for the Stonewall Riots. After
the American Revolution, the Treaty of Paris was there to help regulate the tension
between America and England, but for Stonewall it was just met with messy streets
that needed to be cleaned up, injuries on both sides, and the realization that there
was a need for change. Treaties or compromises often come with rigid details that
confine the parties involved to follow very strict rules. For example, The Treaty of
Paris divided the land in North America between Spain, Britain, and the colonist,
kicking the French off the continent entirely (Treaty of Paris). If the events of
Stonewall were subject to the confinements that a compromise brings to a situation its
strong influence and reach that it had would have ultimately been cut short. The Gay
Liberation Front is a prime example
Main Causes Of Civil War
The main causes of the civil war was the election of 1860 where Abraham Lincoln
became president, sectionalism, and slavery. Ever since it was the election of
1860, Lincoln became President, and his goal was to keep slavery out of the
North. New nation from the seven slave states were made and that s because they
didn t want to listen to the goal Lincoln made. Lincoln made this goal to have equal
rights for the next few years. ( Civil War Facts ) Another point that caused the Civil
War was sectionalism. Sectionalism was known for the North and South to be
divided into two parts from one territory. One of the reasons that the North and South
were divided was because they were convinced for each justice when war began.

Although the NFL is trying to change their involvement on domestic violence
issues, it is unclear at this time if they will follow through. The NFL and Goodell
continue to be under media scrutiny, especially since swift and proper action
against Rice did not happen until after the footage was released. They have changed
their policy to a six game suspension for a first offense, although offense is not
defined and is open for interpretation in the policy. There are still football players
who continue to play despite legal action against them in domestic violence disputes.
The article continues with pointing out the fact that the NFL cannot altogether end
the problem of domestic violence in the world today, but it can use the recent media
attention to bring awareness to the problem. Although the ways in which the NFL
handled these cases previously are questionable at best, there is potential to recover
from previous mistakes by continuing to hold their athletes accountable and
providing awareness on the subject. Overall, this article did an extremely good job
of pointing out the discrepancies of how the NFL has handled domestic violence

Legalizing Marijuana in Texas: The Point of A Joint INTRODUCTION I. Attention
Statement: Legalizing marijuana in Texas has been a long standing debate since
2005. Recently, just last June, a major breakthrough has been made on this highly
contentious issue. The legislature passed the bill into law on the legal use of
marijuana for medicinal purposes. However, progress has yet to be made on
legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes, which accounts for most of the
criminal activities in our state. (Insert picture ) As reported in texasdps.state.org, the

here to speak about on how we could benefit and resolve these problems through
legalizing marijuana in Texas. III. Importance: This topic is quite relevant today in
the sense that the many Texans have engaged in continuous debates on whether the
pros of legalizing marijuana outdo the disadvantages. More so, one will get to

marijuana for recreational use. IV. Preview of Main Points: First, I will discuss the
underlying problems that set the need for legalizing marijuana. Second, I will
discuss the solutions in the proposed law reforms. Third, I will explain how Texas
will benefit if the proposed law reforms to legalize marijuana are implemented.
Lastly, I will discuss how you could support our campaign to legalize marijuana in
Pascal, The Founder Of The Pascal s Wager
Blaise Pascal was the founder of the Pascal s Wager. Pascal was a French
philosopher, an inventor, a mathematician, a scientist and a theologian. Pascal
extended a reason to believe in God, even though other people had beliefs that God
is not real and his existence is not inconceivable. The Pascal s Wager was a second
person communication. It showed that Pascal conceptualizes an individual forced
to decide between the belief in God and not to believe in him. An example of what
Pascal would demonstrate this as if, one was in a coin toss game, one side you
conclude to believe and the other side you don t. There are different outcome each
time you play and there are different circumstances that can affect the outcome.
There are a few possible outcomes are the following. You bet that he does exist, the
outcome is he does, that s an infinite gain for you. You bet that he exists, the
outcome is he doesn t, that s an infinite loss for you. You bet that he does not exist
and the outcome is he does, that s an infinite loss for you. You bet that He does not
exist, and the outcome he doesn t, that s an infinite gain for you. Pascal claimed
betting on his existencewas irrational. That if you bet on the existence of Godthat
there stands of an infinite reward (gain) that he does exist that can be represented by
an eternity in paradise, and the uncertainty of a miniature risk that can be represented
by whatever physically causes your happiness would waive during your life. A

Their are many demanding professional adjustments when transitioning from

family possessions are seized leaving Winter, her mother and her three younger
siblings to fend for themselves. Winter selfishness didn t let that happen, she
decided to go on her own and hustle her way back into the lifestyle she once
lived.Unfortunately things didn t work out for winter the way she wanted. Instead
of getting things done on her own Winter looked for a man to take care of her,
because that was the only thing her mother taught her. The same man that was
supposed to love and take care of her let her take the fall for his crimes, and
ultimately sent Winter to jail for a fifth teen year sentence. One recurring theme in
the novel is that success is not easily earned. This is a message that Winter Santiago
didn t quite comprehend. Winter s father success made her believe that she could
have anything she wanted in life with a snap of a finger. She didn t understand how
to become successful. Winter believed that hustling and seeking out a man to take
care of her, would bring her back on top. In order to
Tert-Butyl Chloride
After synthesizing tert butyl chloride, the melting point on the compound was found
to be 47˚C. According to literature, tert¬ butyl chloride has a melting point of
51ЛљC, apart from a little bit of deviation, this shows that the correct compound was
created. The percent yield obtained for the synthesis of tert butyl chloride was
47.42%. This could have been due to errors that occurred in the lab. When moving
the solutionfrom one test tube or graduated cylinder to another some of the solution
may still be left in the tube which lowers the percent yield. Also when working with
a simple distillation setup, the vial is not distilled to dryness therefore some of the
solution is not collected. Some of the solution can also be trapped on the side
Toyota Prius Commercial Essay
The commercial of topic is the 2016 Toyota Prius commercial shown in the Super
Bowl. The purpose of this ad was to disprove all other assumptions about the Prius in
general as well as show the appeals of driving one. Since the Prius is generally
viewed as uncool the commercial focused on fast paced and interesting aspects to
make it appear more desirable. However, in today s society, in order to make a
product desirable it has to appear sexy . The Toyota Priuscommercial attempts to
introduce a better and sleeker car by means of color association, extreme framing and
scale, and an up beat plot and music to match the mood.
The composition of colors plays a significant role in this commercial. Right at the
beginning on the commercial when the supposed robbers exit the building, the
viewer is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The up beat song make the robbers actions appear to be more hip and extreme than
they actually are. The song builds up anticipation at multiple points throughout the
commercial when the robbers are close to being caught. However, by utilizing the
features in the vehicle, they are able to get away. In addition, the music also
appears to add a smoother transition for the montage. The montage displays multiple
people s positive reactions to the Prius, even though it is being used to commit a
crime. While Toyota is trying to market the Prius, they are going about it in a
confusing manner. While the car itself is supposed to be cool and bold, they go
about it by showing an illegal action being justified because the car has innovative
features.
In conclusion, the Toyota Prius commercial appeared to be very effective in
advertising their new vehicle. By utilizing all of the multiple types of shots and
framing, the director was able to neatly display all the features and model of the
Prius. This was done whilst simultaneously dispelling previous notions about the car
as well via means of the sound as well as
Analyzing Hemingway s Short Story “Hills Like White...
Analyzing Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway s short story Hills like white elephants at first glance is difficult
to understand. It undoubtedly causes most readers to go over it multiple times to
grasp exactly what is taking place. The way the story is written is so complex with
the 50/50 mixture of traditional storytelling and an abundance of character to
character dialogue as well. That s not the best part; the story s setting means
everything to it. The Train station setting ties in to the plot of the story, the characters
behavior, and even the point of view that the story is being told from.
The story is about a man and a woman discussing the sensitive subject of abortion.
They are at a train station waiting for their train while ... Show more content on

Far away, beyond the river, were mountains. The shadow of a cloud moved across
the field of grain and she saw the river through the trees. And we could have all this,
she said. And we could have everything and every day we make it more impossible.
At that time she was wondering if not going through with it was best for the two of
them.
Shortly after that the girl sat back at the table she took a glance at the barren land
opposite of the train tracks and seemed a bit agitated as you can see from the
quote. Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?

setting sure played a part in the choice by putting the two sides into
`` Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind `` By Charlie...
Cinematic Styles in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004, written by Charlie Kaufman
and directed by Michel Gondry, deviates from conventional film by using not only
naturalistic elements but elements of surrealism as well. The film has many
conventional elements that make it enjoyable to watch for many people, and for it to
have mainstream. The surrealism elements give the film a unique perspective on a
romantic plot, and makes the scenes visually exciting. Even though the other film
styles are used, the narrative is definitely naturalistic at its core, despite its use of
other film styles. Overall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a film that is partly
conventional, surreal and naturalistic in both its narrative and its visual elements.
The film tells the story of a couple who deals with their breakup by erasing their
memories of each other through a medical procedure that eliminates specific parts of
someone s memory. The filmmakers go about this with the use of editing that tells
the story of their relationship from the start until the moment when they both decide
they no longer can be together. The film is edited in a way that makes scenes that
are typically realistic become surreal in order to show how even under extreme
circumstances the couples fate is beyond their control. This start to the movie puts the
audience in a position of a voyeur in Joel and Clementine relationship, which in the
opening scene
Bluegrass Scholarship Essay
I would like to take the time to thank you for your incredible generosity in awarding
me with the Kelley Shannon Gibson Bluegrass Scholarship. Coming to SUNY
Plattsburgh, I was looking for a club that would allow me to express myself
musically and would also help me to build friendships that would last throughout
college. I am glad that the bluegrass club ended up being the club that provided me
with so many opportunities.
After attending the club and organization fair at Plattsburgh in the fall, I fell in love
with the idea of joining a Bluegrass club. I was welcomed from the first jam session
that I attended, and I knew that this would be a club where I would stay for a very
long time. The opportunity to sing and to play a new instrument
St. James Hospital Department Of Human Resources
Franciscan St. James Hospital Department of Human Resources Most organizations
view human resources departments as less valuable than other departments because it
s not a revenue generating department. However, it is quite the opposite because HR
brings the organization its most valuable assets, which are its people.
Since its birth in November of 1911, Franciscan St. James (Franciscan) has evolved
tremendously. Over the years, it has expanded from a 50 bed acute hospital into one
with two campus locations including Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields, IL
(Franciscan Alliance Inc., 2015). Rich in both religion and compassion, Franciscan is
built on strong ethics and morals. Its mission is to continue Christ s Ministry in

The hospital offers its patients center for diabetes, rehabilitation, colon and rectal
surgery, bariatric surgery, pain management and wound and disease management;
surgery, joint, and occupational and environmental healthcenters; and a sleep
disorders lab (Franciscan Alliance, 2015). Additionally, several services for women
and children are delivered along with emergency, diagnostic, outpatient therapy, home
health, ambulance and EMS, and family care, as well as durable medical equipment
(Franciscan Alliance, 2015). The services offered vary between in patient and out
patient depending on the services rendered. The hospital emergency room services
operate 24 hours 7 days per week. However, the human resources department has
standard business operation hours of 8 a.m. 5:00 p.m. (Irons, 2015).
The professionals who occupy positions within St. James and are trusted to carry out
the mission and values can be tied directly back to the Department of Human
Resources.
Accreditations and Credentials The HR department ensures that the various
departments within the hospital are current with all laws, regulations, accreditations,
and policies. There are a number of credentials necessary in order for St. James to
function. The hospital is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association
/Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program and is the first in the area to be
accredited by the American Diabetes Association (Franciscan Alliance, 2015). It
Barbara Kingsolver s The Bean Trees
In the book The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, the wisteria vine functions as a
symbol of Turtle s growth throughout her journey, as well as the people that have
helped her along the way. When Turtle is first given to Taylor, she is agonized and
timid, without a clue of whom she can look to as a motherly figure. Taylor remarks
how the most amazing thing was the way the child held on... to [her]... it s little
hands like roots sucking on dry dirt. (22) Turtle s horrible past has mentally scarred
her. She views Taylor as safety and is relying on her for care. Turtle s need for
Taylor is similar to a plant s need for water. Neither can survive without the other. As
time progresses the duo bonds more closely, and Turtle begins to open up. One

  • 1. Professional Goal Essay Writing an essay on the topic of professional goals can be both challenging and rewarding. The difficulty lies in the need to articulate one's aspirations, achievements, and future plans in a coherent and compelling manner. It requires introspection, a clear understanding of personal and career objectives, and the ability to convey these thoughts effectively to the reader. Crafting a professional goal essay involves the challenge of striking the right balance between humility and confidence. It necessitates the skill to showcase accomplishments without sounding boastful and to outline future plans with a sense of purpose. The writer must convey passion, determination, and a strategic approach to achieving their goals, making the essay persuasive and engaging. Moreover, the challenge extends to organizing ideas logically, maintaining a consistent tone throughout the essay, and ensuring that the narrative flows seamlessly. A well-structured essay should capture the reader's attention from the introduction, maintain their interest in the body, and leave a lasting impression with a strong conclusion. While the difficulty lies in presenting a unique and genuine perspective, the reward comes from the opportunity to reflect on personal growth and future ambitions. The process of writing such an essay allows individuals to clarify their goals, identify areas for improvement, and envision a roadmap for their professional development. In conclusion, tackling a professional goal essay involves navigating the delicate balance of self- reflection and effective communication. It demands the ability to convey aspirations and plans with authenticity and clarity. However, the process is not without its rewards, as it provides a platform for self-discovery and sets the foundation for future success. • 3. What Are The 8 Features Of Crime 8 Features of Crime There are eight essential factors that are found every crime and therefore make up the legal concept as to what crime is. The eight concepts are actus reus, mens rea, concurrence, causation, harm, legality, necessary attendant circumstances, and punishment. Actus reus means guilty act, or any act that is in violation of the law. This term describes the physical not the mental act of committing a crime.Omission to act is also represented under this act, for example child neglect where a parent or guardian does not fulfill their duties that are afforded to a child. Another part to this is also threatening to act which can be criminal as well. If you tell someone that you re going to murder them can get one into trouble because threats, especially those against the president, are taken very seriously.Attempted murder is also illegal even if it is not accomplished if one is caught in the act or of doing the act then they can be arrested. Conspiring to commit an illegal act and that can be proven is illegal as well. One example is if you were to have this elaborate plan to rob a very prominent bank and you are communicating with people and making plans of the building then that is enough to get you in trouble for conspiring. These are the concepts that fall under actus reus . The next idea of crime is mens rea which is kind of like partner to actus rea. Except mens rea is the state of mind that accompanies a criminal act. There are four types of mens

The snow being frozen and penetrating explains one of the symptoms of anorexia, which is feeling cold. In addition to this, Lia s mentions of topics relating to winter is her way of expressing how she is in a frozen state of being dead and alive, all from her disorder. However, at the end of the book, Lia has overcome this past, saying, I am thawing (Anderson, 278). This implies how the past of Lia s ongoing battle with anorexia has made her discover who she was a person at the end of the book. This also expressed how winter is the symbol of how she has struggled with
  • 6. Media And Media The mass media is an important factor when it comes to getting a message across to the public. No specific community can do without media as it is a crucial element to society. The media helps provide individuals things that they need the most, that being information. Sometimes this information is considered injurious and appalling, whereas other times it normal. The messages that are taken from the media are based off of one s own faith and knowledge, in accordance to the reinforcement theory (Jetter, 2017). The reinforcement theory argues that you can change someone s perspective or behavior by using reinforcement, punishment and extinction. Punishments are used to avoid the behavior you do, rewards are used to support the behavior you want and lastly extinction represents stopping an individual from acting upon a learned behavior. Although terrorism cannot be defined in one specific definition, it can be depicted as the use of violence against innocent individuals to bring political change through the means of fear . Majority of the time, terrorist attacks are often not directly intended for an exact individual, rather, are done to convey a memorandum (Altheide, 2007). This can potentially signify that the media paying a large amount of attention to terrorist organizations, may further encourage them to continue their violence. The correlation between terrorist and the media is symbiotic as terrorist organizations terrorize in order to seek publicity for the sole

  • 8. Analysis Of The Constitution And The Constitution Dahl and the Constitution James Madison and the rest of the Founders of the Constitution undeniably founded a government that has withstood the test of time. The question that Robert Dahl poses in How Democratic Is the American Constitution? is whether this form of government and specifically the Constitution is as democratic as it should be and focuses on the Constitution s shortcomings. Dahl argues that the constitution is much less democratic than it ought to be. Madison, on the other hand, had doubts about the effectiveness and practicality of a purely democratic form of government and fought for a republic with checks on power. I believe that the Constitution should be evaluated according to how it serves the American population today. Americans are raised through public schooling and popular culture to view the Constitution as nearly infallible and those that wrote it as inspired. However, it is clearly not a perfect document. After the bill of rights there has come about seventeen additional amendments, or small changes by definition, to the original document. It intentionally contained no mention of one of the most egregious aspects of American history slavery. Despite all of these things, I agree with Madison that the Constitution needed to limit democracy in order to provide a strong enough national government that would not endanger personal liberty. Society has changed quite a bit since the original crafting of the Constitution in 1787 which has prompted

Along with expanding industry came the demand for a work force, then being immigrants and native born Americans. The American industrial worker had suffered at the hands of their employer with the cutting of wages, harsh work environments, and lack of support. Labor unions brought people together in order to establish a standard for the working environment of an American industrial worker. In 1868 Abram S. Hewitt introduced the open hearth process, a method for making steel, to the United States. This process allowed for steel to be made in vast quantities. This opened the way for the American steel industry, which needed workers in order to mine the iron and coal necessary for the production of steel and then the production of steel itself. However, it is becoming more and more prevalent to hardly have any at all, especially when referring to savings. People are beginning to hit that age where they can no longer work for their money and have to rely on the money that they have been savingup; Or, in this case, the lack of the money that they have been saving up. For many Americans today, the real query seems to be Exactly how much can I just barely get by on? Personal savings for American s as a whole has been rapidly declining for the past two decades. Starting out at about 9% in the 1980 s, the average amount of savings that American s had to start out the new century was almost at 0%. The decline suggests a constriction of consumer credit and a weakening in consumer confidence (Ellen, Wiener, Fitzgerald 58). The lack of consumer confidence can easily be blamed on the recession of 2009. Americans are no longer confident in their retirement savings. The question looms over the heads of aging citizens each year: How can Americans save enough money for retirement? The issue brings about many questions and interest on why this is the case and how it can be resolved. When Charles Darwin published The Origen of Species in 1859, he knew the asseverations made in it would cause a rift in the scientific community of his day. Also, he knew that his work would not be received by humanity with open arms because of the dogmatic idea of creation that was predominant in his time. Nonetheless, he went ahead and published the results of his extensive and detailed work because he knew, that not doing so would cause him to lose the right to claim this discovery for himself. At first, the scientific community attacked his arguments because they were against the traditional beliefs, but eventually his ideas began to gain ground until they became one of the pillars of modern science. Upon considering these facts, I believe it is important to ponder on the reasons behind the opposition to Darwin s ideas, how he managed to convey them, and more importantly how these ideas helped shape our understanding of biological history. Before even talking about The Origen of Speciesor Darwin s theories it is important to discuss the historical context in which this book was first published. Up to this point in history, the origin of all life on the planet had been explained using a theological approach. In other words, God had created the world along with all its vegetation, then created all the animals, and then created humans as the center of creation. As she deals with life s harsh reality in her low income neighborhood, the hardships she faces make her question who she really is, and what defines her. One of the reasons that it can be complicated for Esperanza to find out who she is, is that gender roles are being forced upon her future constantly. From her own family, to her friends abusive fathers, she is shown that her culture ...[doesn t] like their women strong (Cisneros 10). In the Vignette titled My Name , Esperanza explains the struggles that she has with the personal meaning she has put behind it. She explains how her grandma was like her, a wild horse of a woman (Cisneros 11) and that she was forced into a sad married life. This causes confusion with her identity, because she doesn t want to inherit her [grandmother s lonely] place by the window. (Cisneros 11) However, she does want to be her own, strong self. Esperanza learning how this influences her identity as the book continues will teach her to ignore gender roles and pay attention to what she feels is most important to her. Another way that Esperanza has trouble with her identity is the fact that she ascotiates living on Mango Street directly with who she is. Throughout the book, she struggles with her house not being a home to her, and that it isn t the place she thought it would be. When she says that she needs a house she can point to. But this isn t it. (Cisneros 5) in the first vignette House on Mango Street , you can feel her embarrasment in the where she lives. Esperanza is the type of person who feels as if certain items reflect who you are. For example, when the reader hears about her expectations of a house with three washrooms...[with] trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. (Cisneros 4), she later explains how she is ashamed of her current living situation compared to
  • 22. Desert Solitaire Summary Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness is the work for which Abbey is best known and by which he is most frequently defined. It contains his views on a variety of subjects, from the problems of the United States Park Service to an angry indictment of the evils of technology masquerading under the guise of progress. No voice is more eloquent in the praise of America s remaining wilderness nor more vitriolic in attacking those who would exploit and destroy it for profit. In the introduction to Desert Solitaire, Abbey informs his readers that he has combined the experiences of three summers spent as a park ranger at Arches National Monument into one for the sake of narrative consistency. Newcomb remains behind to fish for catfish while the adventurous Abbey explores upstream. He wanders up the labyrinthine canyon past untouched cliff dwellings of the Anasazi, the ancient people who inhabited the land before the Navajo. He realizes that these, too, will be submerged under the flooding water of the Colorado. Moreover, Abbey points out that the waters of Lake Powell will irrigate no land, will grow no crops. Instead, the trapped water will produce power power to make possible the continued urban sprawl of Phoenix and Albuquerque and provide an aquatic playground for well to do suburbanites, whose noisy powerboats will drown out the cry of the red tailed hawk, the calls of the killdeer and sandpiper. When Abbey returns down the canyon at nightfall to rejoin his fellow adventurer Newcomb, he is greeted by the smell of cooking catfish and the night sounds of the river. He reflects that this is all the paradise that is needed. The beauty of the place is heartbreaking, as is the tragedy of its imminent disappearance under mud and water. As Abbey and Newcomb approach the construction zone of the dam, a large sign that Abbey derisively dubs first billboard erected in Glen Canyon reminds them that government, in the service of greed, is willing to prosecute those who would trespass on the march of progress. This was a job that he had been working at for thirty three years. The muscles in his arms were tearing for no reason that we knew of and he was having some other health problems. It was very upsetting to both of us not knowing the outcome about his health and now no income as well. We had seen many doctors on many different occasions. We kept hitting a dead end. Finally, we were able to see a new doctor, a neurologist, and after examining my husband, he immediately said to my husband, you have McArdle s disease. It was a term that I was not familiar with at all. My heart dropped and I was not sure what we were up against. Understanding the limitations of a person with McArdle s disease is the best way to live with it. What is McArdle s disease? It is a rare skeletal muscle disorder (Choleva, A.J. 2011). 1 in 100,000 persons is affected by the disease. The disease gets its name from Dr. Brian McArdle. McArdle s disease is caused by a missing enzyme, myophosphorylase C. This breaks down glycogen (which is the body form of stored energy) into glucose (sugar). People who have McArdle s disease often appear lazy. Just to look at them, they seem to be very healthy. In order for someone to have the disease both parents would have to have the defective gene. This is called autosomal recessive inheritance pattern ( McArdle s Disease Overview Facts June 2014). You are born with the disease but some

  • 31. Homosexuality And The Effects Of The Stonewall Riots The Stonewall Riots highlighted a key issue in the late 1960s American society. Homosexuality was often seen as an illness and a sin to most people. For example, in April 1952 homosexuality was deemed a sociopathic mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association (CNN). This idea was heightened in American society because it was being taught that being gaywas one of the worst things an American can be; showing videos such as Boys Beware . This all changed after the conflict at the Stonewall Inn; located in New York on Christopher Street. The Stonewall Inn was the place where gays and lesbians would flock to, to feel accepted for once in their lives as many of them ran away or were disowned by their own families. Even though Stonewall was a place of freedom, it was also a place for fear as the police would constantly raid the bar to make sure that alcohol was not being served to gays, as the New York State Liquor Authority deemed it illegal to serve homosexuals. Lasting only three days, the riots were able to help start the transformation of American society to become what it is today. The lack of a formal compromise between the nation and the LGBTcommunity was an advantage for the effects of Stonewall to spread as the conflict was able to bring a wave of acceptance and pushed many of history s gay role models to feel inspired to stand up. Unlike most issues in history there was no compromise for the Stonewall Riots. After the American Revolution, the Treaty of Paris was there to help regulate the tension between America and England, but for Stonewall it was just met with messy streets that needed to be cleaned up, injuries on both sides, and the realization that there was a need for change. Treaties or compromises often come with rigid details that confine the parties involved to follow very strict rules. For example, The Treaty of Paris divided the land in North America between Spain, Britain, and the colonist, kicking the French off the continent entirely (Treaty of Paris). If the events of Stonewall were subject to the confinements that a compromise brings to a situation its strong influence and reach that it had would have ultimately been cut short. The Gay Liberation Front is a prime example

Born in Brooklyn,New York, Winter Santiago was the daughter of a young mother and the notorious drug dealer Ricky Santiago. From the beginning of the novel Winter lets it known that she was born into luxury, and just because she lived in the projects of Brooklyn didn t mean she was poor.In fact it was the exact opposite for the Santiago family.Winter came into adolescence as a shallow, self centered individual, motivated solely by physical attractiveness, material possessions and the desire to attract as many men as possible. On Winter s six tenth birthday her father Ricky Santiago decides it s finally time to move his family out of the ghetto. Winter s mother and sisters were very excited for the move although Winter was livid. The family s move to a mansion in Long Island did not stop Winter from desiring her ghetto culture. It also didn t help that neither parents were actual parents to Winter. Shortly after the family moves to Rhode island the FBI raid the house and arrest Ricky Santiago on several charges. After Santiago s arrest his empire begins to crumble. All of the family possessions are seized leaving Winter, her mother and her three younger siblings to fend for themselves. Winter selfishness didn t let that happen, she decided to go on her own and hustle her way back into the lifestyle she once lived.Unfortunately things didn t work out for winter the way she wanted. Instead of getting things done on her own Winter looked for a man to take care of her, because that was the only thing her mother taught her. The same man that was supposed to love and take care of her let her take the fall for his crimes, and ultimately sent Winter to jail for a fifth teen year sentence. One recurring theme in the novel is that success is not easily earned. This is a message that Winter Santiago didn t quite comprehend. Winter s father success made her believe that she could have anything she wanted in life with a snap of a finger. She didn t understand how to become successful. Winter believed that hustling and seeking out a man to take care of her, would bring her back on top. In order to
