In Michael Ondaatje s novel, In the Skin of a Lion, there is a severe shift in tone,
character morality, and emotion when comparing the beginning to the end. After
completing the novel and working to make sense of it, I began to question what the
source of all this change was and the reasoning behind it. Through analysis, I came to
the conclusion that many of the prominent characters featured in this novel are
unable to engage in what is called competent communication. To be a competent
communicator, an individual must adapt to different social settings in order for their
intended message to be both appropriate and effective for their intended audience.
In Ondaatje s novel, however, most characters lack this skill, seeing things only
from their point of view, failing to ever consider others perspectives. This results in
several conflicts being left without a solution and creates a cause and effect chain of
events leading to chaos. In addition to communication incompetence, I found there to
be various other barriers in communication that include, physical, linguistic, and
psychological. Throughout this paper I will be explaining and providing evidence
for why these various communication barriers are responsible for the eventual

An Investigation On The Rocky Shore Ecosystem
The rocky shore ecosystem is built up of many rocky ledges that are covered with sea
water at high tide and exposed rock at low tide. This community contains many
different organisms that are well adapted to living in this environment. We visited this
marine reserve to extract a suffice amount of data about these organisms to conduct
an investigation on their community patterns of zonation and their interrelationships
with other species. The majority of this marine reserve is built up of sharp rock
which is exposed to the Cook Strait. We placed a transect line along this rock and
used a 50cm2 quadrat square, to record the percentage of species on the rocky shore
at different heights and substrates. From this investigation at the rocky shore we
discovered: Chamaesipho columna (barnacle) Chamaesipho brunnea (barnacle)
Sypharochiton pelliserpentis (chiton) Cellana denticulata (limpet) Cellana radians
(limpet) Cellana omata (limpet) Austrolittorina antipodum (periwinkle)

The site was divided into several facilities carrying out various activities to develop
weapons and store and dispose of nuclear waste. Within the first two years MEDACE
had built a nuclear reactor, underground waste storage tanks and a nuclear fabrication
facility. All the facilities were in operation to develop plutonium fuels for military

Most liquids from single shell tanks have been pumped to the newer double shelled
tank over the years, to remove the remaining 9000 cubic meter of drainable liquid

(Hanlon 2003). Salt cake and thick waste sludge was left behind in the tank. No
double shell tank has leakages till date, even though the design life of oldest ones has
been reached (Hanlon 2003).
However majority of single shelled tank exhibited some kind of leakages ultimately

the shallower, northern portion of the formation and gas is developed as the

gave many companies the surface area needed to cover vast amounts of the

Shooting Stars is a horrific and moving poem written by Carol Ann Duffy. She
adopts the persona of a female Jew speaking out from beyond the grave about her
terrifying ordeal before she died in the Holocaust. A powerful impression is left on
the reader after reading Duffy s dramatic monologue and visual descriptions of her
ordeal and immense suffering. She urges the reader to remember what the Jewish
victims were forced to go through, and begs us not to turn our back and forget.
It s disgusting to think that someone could actually do that to a small, innocent child
caught up in the atrocities of war and the Holocaust.
Duffy s Jewish persona speaks out from beyond the grave on behalf of all the Jewish
victims, and reminds us of the extreme horror of their ordeal through her use of
imagery and word choice, and urges us to remember

The list of names isn t punctuated, which give us the idea of them losing their
