The resin of Canarium contains a high percentage of essential oils with known antioxidant and
antifungal properties (Koudou et al., 2005; Obame et al., 2007). Therefore, we were interested if
the essential oil could be used as a protective agent against termites as well. Furthermore, location
and climatic conditions have an effect on the growth of a tree and its production of resin and
essential oils. Therefore we wanted to establish if the oil from Uganda contains the same

2.1 Plant materials
The resin of Canarium schweinfurthii was harvested from the bark of a mature tree in Sango bay
and stored in a freezer. Termites used in the assay were Macrotermes bellicosus as these have been
found to be the most destructive to wood and timber. Termites above the third instar were used.
2.2 Isolation of essential oils
The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of the resin (50g) for 4 hours. The oil obtained
was dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and kept in amber coloured bottles at 4 oC prior to

visiting grandma s house. The sight of purple daisies can arouse a memory of attending a wedding
decorated with purple daisies. Senses stimulate our memories because according to cultural
anthropologist Constance Classen, senses themselves may each be linked with different trains of
associations (Classen 1997: 401). Because of this link, senses and memories have an interwoven
relationship. Furthermore, some consumer capitalists have exploited this interrelationship to profit
themselves.
In David Howes article, HYPERESTHESIA, or, The Sensual Logic of Late Capitalism, Howes
explains how capitalists today are focusing on multisensory marketing to fully evoke a sensual

Chinua Achebe s novel Things Fall Apart, and the reading African Challenge both look at the
consequences and benefits of European colonialism on the Igbo people and African culture. The
novel s main character is Okonkwo, who is the head the Umuofia clan, a Nigerian tribe. One of
Okonkwo s personal mission is to not be like his father, who he viewed as a coward and weak.
Okonkwo s accomplishes this mission by being obsessed with masculinity and viewing feminity in
a derogatory way. Okonkwo s hold over his clan is tested by the infusion of missionaries and along
with them colonialism into Nigeria. The African Challenge also talks about the European
missionaries and their mission to spread Christianity amongst the Igbo peopleand also about the
beliefs that both societies had about eachother. Through the incorporation of the Igbo language
throughout his novel, and the interactions of the Europeans with the Igbo people and their customs
presented in both the novel and African Challenge, we can see both the benefits and consequences
