The Story of an Hour by Kate Choplin is only one thousand words long; yet there is
strong character development throughout. It also has seemingly strong undertones of
social issues, such as independence as a woman in the 1800s. Many of those in the
literary field argue whether Choplin s intention was to have underlaying tones of
positivity and feminism, or if it is a story about irony told through a woman named
Louise Mallard, a woman with heart troubles who dies of happiness when she finds
out that her husband is in fact still alive. Lawrence I. Berkove argues the latter with
refuting arguments and a close analysis of the text with evidence. Berkove starts his
argumentoff by refuting other arguments on the topic of this short story. He
references the standard for the interpretation of the story by Toth and Seyersted;
that the story of Louise Mallard is an extreme example of the theme of self
assertion [and] feminist bent whereas he believes Louise is an immature egotist and
a victim of her own extreme self assertion. He elaborates on his refutation by stating
these positions are all read into the story from non textual assumptions. Since the
narrator is not first person it is third person omniscient we cannot assume that the
narrator is a reliable narrator. He backs up this argument by showing that the narrator

departments, from 2 weeks to 3 months, and progress on to leadership positions

offices and stages of the program. Each trainee was responsible for projecting a
professional attitude, commanding respect from the team, and completing the
Chartered Institute of Bankers examinations.

INTRODUCTION

Consumption energy since the 1950s has been in a progressive upsurge in the
world. Fossil fuels like oil, natural gases, and coal nevertheless has the aggregate of

The previous studies show that the TDP, where the SCR starts to contact the seabed,
is one of the critical locations of SCR prone to fatigue failure (Fu etal, 2010).
Failure in SCR can result in reduction or an interruption of a revenue. It may also
lead to pollution or spillage which disastrous to human live. Cyclic bending stresses
are largely experienced at the TDZ which is a critical location for fatigue especially
when subjected to high temperatures and pressures. Therefore, TDZ design must
carry a high degree of reliability. (Bai and Bai)
1.2. Scope
To analyze and optimize the fatigue crake propagation of a steel catenary riser at the
touch down zone. This would also determine the failure mode of the SCR in worse
conditions.
Furthermore, a theoretical overview of physical aspect of SCR and a detailed study
of fatigue crack with respect to different external loads will be discussed. A typical
analysis, simulation and modelling using ANSYS will be carried out to determine
the fatigue life the SCR subjected to different loads also an MPI (Magnetic Particle
Inspection) inspection will carried to determine its initial cracks.
1.3. Aim and Objective
To carry out a research and perform some engineering analysis to determine the
fatigue life of an X65 steel catenary riser at its touch down zone and ways of
mitigating its failure mode.

The figures below illustrate two print advertisements showing this idea of femininity
in that period of time.

An advertisement by Eastern Airlines in the 1970s furthers the concept of femininity
that women must be beautiful, warm and would be better suited to professions that
entail providing service to customers as an extension of the idea that women, by the
fact that they are women, have a better understanding of care as compared to men.

In contemporary times, these types of advertisements capitalising on female
stereotypes have lessened in number. This does not mean, however, that it no longer
exists. The company 42 Below held a contest to publicise their product Stil Vodka, its
advertisement depicting a Russian bride doing housework, as seen in the figure below.
