Exploration of Castles Essay
Exploration of Castles
A.D 450 saw the creation of castles. Romans were replaced by Anglo Saxon foes, and these did
leave behind a system of castles however these were for Motte and Bailey castles built in the reign
of Edward the confessor.
The Norman invasion of 1066 was one of the causes for castles to become an important part of
defence. After king Harold s defeat by William the conqueror, William was concerned about how
he would control the country with only a limited number of troops facing a hostile environment. He
did not have enough troops to station them everywhere, so he used a very useful tactic that had
worked in Normandy previously. This was a simplified castle known as a ... Show more content on

The pathways and ladders that allowed reach to important areas of the castle have been removed
or destroyed; and the enemy are at a disadvantage because they are facing attack from a raised level.
As time progressed, the situation in England changed. The Normans were now in control of
England and there was little resistance from hostile sources, therefore a concentration on the
development of castles occurred.
Less time was needed for castles to be constructed quickly and therefore time could be used to
search for better materials for building. This meant that stone could be used instead of wood,
which was used previously. By 1100, the earth that had held Motte and bailey castles had now
settles, and was capable of sustaining much larger weights. With the change to stone castles, fire
was not a concern as it was when Motte and baileys were in use.
Square keeps were used when the development of stone castles were quite young. They were
often built in the most important places, to show how powerful the Normans were. Square keeps
were good because of the immense thickness of the walls. The walls in square keeps were often up
to 5 metres thick, and 30 metres high. This added to the strength of the castle because the walls
could easily withstand attacks from siege weapons such as magonels and trebuchets.

Relief, Recovery, Regulation
Relief, Recovery, Regulation
When Franklin personally addressed the Democratic Party Convention to accept the nomination, he
was the first candidate to do so and thus received a lot of attention. These were the words from the
acceptance speech that set the tone for his campaign and his administration:
I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled
constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a
political campaign; it is a call to arms. Give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in
this crusade to restore America to its own people. 1

While many of these programs were wasteful, they succeeded to some extent in keeping people out
of foreclosure, out of starvation, and propped up morale. I think they could have been more
successful had the Administration not shot itself in the foot with a perverse economic tightening in
1937.
Recovery
One of the best examples of a successful recovery program was the Tennessee Valley Authority
(TVA). This program was proposed by Senator George Norris 5 during the Hoover Administration.
Resurrected and expanded under Roosevelt, despite opposition from private utilities, The TVA
constructed and maintained dams, provided hydroelectric power where there was no electricity
before, and stimulated investment in the region. The TVA is one of the shining success stories of
the New Deal.
A less successful program was called the National Recovery Act (NRA). The NRA established a
minimum wage, set working hours, and attempted to regulate prices. The act invested the President
with vast authority to intervene in the market economy. One example was power to regulate aspects
of interstate commerce, a power that the Constitution invests in Congress. The act was voluntary to
business and riddled with bureaucracy.
In May 1935 the US Supreme Court, in Schechter Poultry Corporation
V. United States, unanimously ruled the NRA unconstitutional. In fact, 11 out of 16 of the

Lao Tzu Leadership Analysis
Lao Tzu is considered the Father of Taoism and was searching for an individual s path of natural
goodness. He once said Be the Chief, but never the lord. This quote has been very inspirational
to me throughout my Coast Guard career and has guided me to my definition of Leadership. A
lord is given this title by inheritance or positional power granted by landowners. A Chief is
chosen by the village. The person is selected to make the right decisions for the benefit of the
people. It is earned. Based on my interpretation of Lao Tzu s quote, my definition of leadershipis to
have others follow by choice not by mere power. A person cannot rule by force given to them by
rank and expect subordinates to follow. They must demonstrate leading by example and be a role
model for others to follow.
Leadership Influences As I reflect back, I have seen my definition in my mentors and supervisors.
A short list of the mentors I revered include: CWO4 Kenneth Hawko, MSTCM Judd Reno,
Commander John Humpage, CWO4 William Thomas, and BMC Mike Hunt. Their leadership
seemed to naturally be in their personalities but I now realize it was so prominent because I saw
them as my leaders. Those traits are what made me choose to follow them.

Wal-Mart and Costco
1. Introduction
Wal Mart
Wal Mart was founded by Sam Walton on 1962 and it is the largest retailer in the world. The
company has three major operations which are Wal Mart Stores U.S., Sam s Club, and Wal Mart
International. On 2007, Wal Mart used this new slogan Save Money Live Better . However, there
are some critics about their employee life. Wal Mart exploits their employee s salary for setting low
price to customer. They resisted their worker to build union organization because they tried to
prevent from negotiating with employee. Nevertheless, Wal Mart is still successful in the business
because they attract lots of urban and rural consumers.

3. The process of calculation
The way I use to evaluate share price is Enterprise Value to Sales . This way can ignore growth
rate that I need to predict when I use Golden Growth .
Firstly, I use historical data to calculate FCF/Revenue and make average. Furthermore, Capital IQ
offers the predicted revenue data and I combine it with average FCF/Revenue. In other words, I get
projected free cash flow.
Secondly, Ibbotson and Capital IQ provide their bond rating, capital structure, average historical
long term risk free rate and beta. The reason I use historical risk free rate rather current rate is that
it is more stable. According to above information I can find the cost of debt and cost of equity.
Moreover, the effective tax rate can be found in their annual report. That is, I calculate the WACC
finally.
Thirdly, I use EV to Sales ratio in 2011 for the base and use this ratio to multiply revenue in 2015
that I will get terminal value in 2015. Besides, I combine discounted free cash flow from 2012 to
2015 and add 4 year discounted terminal value. As share price is equity value divided by
outstanding shares that I have to use enterprise value subtract long term debt to get equity value.
To short, the advantage for using EV to Sales is that it can prevent from predicting growth rate
inappropriately. After all, growth

Urbanization And Commercialization On Literature
The Effects of Urbanization and Commercialization on Literature
Nature is inescapable. It surrounds humanity and sneaks its way into daily life. Society draws on
experiences with the environment to produce art, theater, and literature. As Tim Ingold, a professor
of Social Anthropology, explains, ... nature furnishes the substance, culture the form. The imaginary
worlds of stories are created from sensations gained from the environment, and culture is a medium
that guides the writer in expressing his or her tale. Tales of Moonlight and Rain (1776) by Ueda
Akinari was written during a time of pilgrimages, uprisings, and intellectual pursuits. Though set in
the past, the book shows the influences of his environment within his nine ghost stories. The
continued urbanization and commercialization of society influenced the literature produced in the
early modern period, as well as views on the supernatural, by expanding on the themes of travel,
loyalty, and philosophy as shown in Akinari s Tales of Moonlight and Rain.
As Japan became more urbanized and roads improved, many commoners became enthralled by the
opportunity to explore the world around them. However, since simply traveling to see the world
was prohibited by the shogunate, many explored the world through pilgrimages. These travelers
wrote dairies and poetry that described the sights and sounds they experience, expanding the culture
of travel through their literature. According to Anthony H. Chamber, the translator of

Dale Carnegie s How to Win Friends and Influence People I will never forget my first MCB
lecture. A large syllabus was presented, one that seemed to be jam packed with deadlines, reading
assignments, quizzes, and to my surprise extra credit assignments. Upon hearing that one of the
extra credit assignments consisted of reading a book published in 1937, I was not too thrilled.
However, after skimming through the first few pages of How to Win Friends and Influence People, I
became instantly intrigued and skimming turned into close reading. I have never been one to

Of course I never meant any harm, but there have been several periods of time when she has
resented me for it. Not only have I made others resent me at times, but I have resented others for
being criticized. Just recently, I received a B on an English paper that I put hours into. Obviously,
I am not the best writer, but I put a lot of work into that paper and consulted with the professor
multiple times before handing it in. Now, I understand that constructive criticism is necessary in
order to enhance one s writing skills, but the professor had absolutely nothing good to say about
my writing. This made me resent class, resent seeing her, resent doing reading assignments, and
above all resent writing. The key word here is resent. Carnegie sums this up well by saying,
Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a person s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance,
and arouses resentment (23). This ties together two points, the emphasis on one s sense of
importance and resentment. Going off of this idea of criticism, I like how Carnegie touched upon
it later in the book. Another principle of his is: Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing
the other person. This is such a key principle because, as stated above, criticism is necessary in
some cases. The hard part about criticism is that it can invoke feelings of resentment. Therefore, in
order to provide criticism in

Socratic Era Socrates
Socrates and the Socratic Era of Philosophy
In 470 399 B.C. lived Socrates. Socrates, considered to be one of, if not the most influential
philosopher, is credited with teaching two of the other most famous philosopher: Pluto, and
Xenophon, as well as making huge contribution to Ethics, and being one of the founders of Western
Philosopher itself.
Born in Alopeke, Socrates belonged to the tribe Antiochis. Not much is known about his early life,
but his father was a sculptor, or stonemason, and his mother a midwife. He married a woman named
Xanthippe, who was known for having a harsh temperament, and with her, he had three children.
Working first as a stonemason, Socrates, while not usually credited in in modern scholarship,

One of his implied offenses to the city was claiming to be a moral and social critic. Rather than
accepting the the development of what he thought of as immorality within his city, Socrates
questioned the societally accepted notion of Might makes right , or rather, whatever somebody
says, goes, as long as they have the strength to defend themselves. Later on, Socrates student Plato
referred to him as The Gadfly , a person who challenges status quos and potential social
normalities. According to Plato, in his book Apology , Socrates friend Chaerephon asked the
Oracle of Delphi if anyone was wiser than Socrates. The Oracle said no one was. Socrates did not
believe the Oracle, because he believed he possessed no wisdom whatsoever. He proceeded to test
the riddle, by approaching men considered to be wise by the common people and questioned them.
Socrates thus concluded that while they were considered wise, they had no answers to questions of
larger, and philosophical nature. It was at that point that Socrates knew the Oracle was correct.
These Wise men thought themselves wise, yet were not. Socrates himself knew he was not wise,
thusly making himself wiser than all else. From this paradox (Named the Socratic Paradox), came

How Did The Industrial Revolution Influence The...
Born into the Classics: 18th to the 19th Century Starting in the nineteenth century great changes
began throughout many societies. The Industrial Revolution swept through Europe and struggles
between old world and new world ideas began to rise exponentially. In what we now called the
United States, the American Civil war began as a result. The effects of the spreading new ideas
influences the musicsociety greatly. In earlier times, musicians were usually employed by the
church or the court (Dobney). Famous composers, such as Beethoven and Mozart, would play at
venues that the church or royalty designated. With the rise of the middle class, and the poor
wanting to witness and learn about the arts right along with the rich, a new public spectacle was
created. With the development of music in the nineteenth century a larger number of people could

Composers wrote larger musical works and demanded more of performers and their instruments.
The bigger the better mentality lead to new musical form such as the tone, large scale symphonic,

orchestras, a larger string section, woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments. People now know
this to be called the Orchestral Standardization, the string instruments were located in the front of
the orchestra, with the woodwind behind, followed by the brass instruments, and the precision
instruments in the very back (Detrick). Orchestras made of these instruments were capable of rich
and varied sound combinations ideally suited for the new Classical form of the symphony (pg 546
Cunningham). Everything relating to music kept growing and expanding. Even instruments were
changing in popularity. In the eighth century the harpsichord was a very famous instrument but as
music developed the love for the harpsichord declined. Audiences were being dazzled by music

Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on Cedars
It is no easy task to create a work through writing or film that has an impact on society. In writing,
one must discuss and analyze a relevant topic that will have an impact on the readers. One must
also present stunning sensory images through words in order to create a complete understanding for
the reader. In filmmaking it is not much different, but there must be striking visual imagery in
combination with a fitting musical score in order to give the viewer of the film the full experience.
There must also be historical accuracy, both in writing and film. In either case, it can take years to
create such a captivating piece of work. David Guterson s novel Snow ... Show more content on

Hatsue had grown up to marry Kabuo, the man on trial, and Ishmael had lost an arm in the war
against the Japanese. Ishmael was also one of the reporters covering Kabuo s trial, and found
himself tempted to ignore the ethics of journalism taught to him by his father in order to satiate his
bitterness toward Hatsue for ending their childhood romance. In delving deeper into the issues that
deal with Kabuo s trial, the effects of war, and the romance between young Ishmael and Hatsue,
Snow Falling on Cedars explores human emotion and behavior with astonishing accuracy.
In the novel, David Guterson spent significant amounts of time exploring the way language can be
used to convey a story line. Guterson went back and forth with scenes from past and present in the
novel, combining both and portraying them thickly with literary devices. One of the most
predominant literary devices in the novel was the use of imagery. The prevalent image of the story
is the snow as it fell upon the cedars that populated San Piedro Island. Guterson invoked this image
on page after page throughout the novel, making it apparent that the snow veiling the cedar forests
could be a metaphor for the way prejudices veil honesty and truth in human behavior. The fact that
the island was stricken with the worst snowstorm in twenty years during Kabuo Miyamoto s trial
was further evidence to such a

Analysis Of Daniel Handler s A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Most authors tend to write their books in a cheerful way. Daniel Handler, on the other hand, writes
in a gloomy style, showing the not so nice things that can happen to people. For example, the three
Baudelaire orphans in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Siblings who just lose their parents in a
deadly house fire and have to deal with the trouble known as Count Olaf, a villain after their
enormous inheritance. Handler wrote the 13 books in the series under the pseudonym Lemony
Snicket. A Series of Unfortunate Eventsis Handler s best known work. In the last book of the
series, the three Baudelaires are in the middle of the ocean on a boat after leaving a burning hotel
where they worked undercover. Unfortunately, the children are accompanied by Count Olaf, the
man after their money. And the Baudelaire fortune is finally mine! Olaf cackled Finally, I am a
very wealthy man, which means everybody must do what I say! Was Olaf s reaction to their
predicament even though his statement is completely false. Snicket made Count Olaf the
antagonist in the story, a manipulative villain where in his mind money equals power. He lives in
his own fairytale where he is superior. To make the Baudelaires situation worse, a storm is added to
the mix showing that the kids can never get a break, pushing their intelligence and strength. The
storm led the Baudelaires and Olaf to an island of strange customs. But the Baudelaires could not
help but feel that they were abandoning their previous

I Got Trapped By My Own Success Essay
Alexander Weygers lived a life of creative adventure on an income so low it never interested the
Internal Revenue Service. He continually complained that man s essential failure was to know
when enough was enough, and he used the line at which he would need to write a check to the
IRS as his definition of enough. There was one occasion, though, when he flirted with that line. I
got trapped by my own success, he said. Weygers dalliance with the tax man came in the late
1950s when he traded a piece of sculpture for an Exacta single lens camera. It was a particularly
cold winter on the Monterey Peninsula. Toward the conclusion of a trip to a junkyard in
Salinas, heavy sleet began to fall. As he waited in the bed of his truck for the storm to pass,
Weygers picked up the camera that happened to be beside him and began taking super close up
photos of the raindrops on the windshield. The clouds eventually parted and rays of light pierced
the droplets, causing a refraction in his lens. Weygers hurried home and began playing with
light refractions on leaves and frozen over chuckholes. He then raced to the beach, taking
similar zoomed in shots of a piece of seaweed and an ant colony. The result was a never before
seen, free form photography or artography, as Weygers termed it. In his studio, he would suspend
drops of water from the bottom side of a sheet of glass. Then, using a macro lens he created
himself, Weygers would look into the inside of the raindrop and

Charles Darwin s The Things They Carried Some Of The...
The central idea around Charles Darwin s theory is that species must evolve to be more effective
while those that do not are left behind. One such human evolution is that of making certain tasks
easier. While either from a physical standpoint such as lifting a heavy weight with one s legs or
back as oppose to just using their less powerful arms, or from a mental standpoint like making a
smaller deal out of something that should mean more. While the first example is a generally
healthy one, the latter is a dangerous way of coping with hard truths. In Tim O Brien s The Things
They Carried some of the soldiers constantly try to quantify items brought from war to make the
brutality of it less heinous in their minds. O Brien illustrates this image to make readers aware of
their own taking the easy way out of situations that sometimes would be better faced head on in
reality. To protect against the literal destruction of war, LieutenantCross uses numbers to
disassociate himself from the barbarities he is committing and witnessing. O Brien exhibits the
image of Lieutenant Cross counting the literal weights of items in the first short story, The Things
They Carried . Cross says, The weapon weighed 7.5 pounds unloaded, 8.2 pounds with its full 20
round magazine. Depending on numerous factors, such as topography and psychology, the riflemen
carried anywhere from 12 to 20 magazines, usually in cloth bandoliers, adding on another 8.4

The Search For Justice In Ian Mcewan s Atonement
The pictures painted in one s head may seem harmless or even helpful to that single individual;
however, once those pictures are introduced to the real world they can take a drastic turn. What
might seem right to one could have consequences that harm those around him or her, causing
chaos and destruction. Individuals are blinded by what they believe in and many fail to stop and
think about how their actions will affect those closest to them. Briony Tallis is a prime example
of this; she wants justice to be served for a story that is made up in her head and she does not
realize the toll it will take on those around her. In Ian McEwans Atonement, Briony s wandering
imagination leads her to seek a fictional justice that causes people around her to suffer while the
truth remains hidden; although she later tries to amend her wrongdoings, the damage has already
been done and she is unsuccessful.
During her search for justice, Briony s imagination and need to create stories strongly obscures
her idea of what a rightful justice is. She [is] one of those children possessed by a desire to have
the world just so (McEwan 4). Everything she experiences is automatically turned into an event
from a story, thus causing her mind to focus on what would go along with the story rather than what
is actually happening in the real world. This is partially because she is only 13, making her too
young to understand the consequences of paying too much attention to the artificial world rather
than

Literary Analysis Of Roman Fever
In Roman Fever by Edith Wharton s, Grace Ansley and Alida Slade begin to discuss their past and
present with one another revealing some skeletons in the closet. Wharton wanted the readers to
focus on the betrayal from a so called friend Mrs. Ansley. Furthermore, Wharton wanted the readers
to think about deceit in the story by actively misleading Mrs. Slade. In the end, what was noted to
be miserable, gains notoriety by revealing the ultimate secret.
The setting of Roman Fever takes place in a Roman restaurant terrace. Surrounded by beautiful
sunsets and prior history, It tends to take a toll on both women that leads to a great deal of emotion.
As young aged women in Rome, young Grace was always sweet and quiet. Alida was engaged to
Delphin. Suspecting that her friend may have feelings for her fiancГ©, Alida wrote a misleading
letter to Grace, requesting that they meet at the Colosseum, signed with Delphin Slades initials.
However, the temperatures near the Forum and Colosseum at night can be brutal, and young Grace
is liable to become ill. It ultimately led to Grace and Alida s friendship to deteriorate.
One can find it rather difficult to believe that these two women were actually childhood
companions. They appear to be the opposite of one another. Mrs. Slade, who is described as
fuller, and higher in color, with a small determined nose supported with vigorous black eyebrows,
(Wharton) seems to be as arrogant and envious of Mrs. Ansley. Mrs. Ansley, however, was

The Global War to the Great Depression
A horrific global war led to an equally heinous economic recession, triggering global fear and lack
of guidance. World leaders stood to the challenge of mending the shattered 100 year peace and
economy in Europe. America, it seemed, desired no part in this scramble for order, turning its back
to the international world. Through the Great War to the Great Depression, the transforming world
not only caused America to withdraw from the world, but also allowed Franklin Delano Roosevelt
an opportunity to refine all aspects of American standards and life. Despite only a brief
participation in the Great War, a diplomatically satiated America swiftly closed its doors to the
international world. However, this was not without good reason; according to Alan Brinkley, the
United Statesgovernment had appropriated $32 billion for expenses directly relating to the
conflict (621). At over 90% of the national gross domestic product at the time, war expenses were
an uncomfortable cost to American leaders who, in addition to the post WWI recession where
millions lost their jobs, decided America needed a break internationally (Brinkley 621 632). Not
only did America refuse to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations, they disarmed
military forces, severely limited immigration, and passed one of the highest tariffs in United States
history (Kennedy). As a result, the prosperous roaring twenties involved not only economic growth
and consumerism but also massive cultural

Asian American Culture In Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club
Alternatively, the traditional practices of family continuity and hierarchy may be figured as
oppressively confining, as in Mirikitani s poem, in which the two generations of daughters contest
the more restrictive female roles of the former generations. In either case, many Asian American
discussions portray immigration and relocation to the United Statesin terms of a loss of the original
culture in exchange for the new American culture.
In many Asian Americannovels, the question of the loss or transmission of the original culture is
frequently represented in a family narrative, figured as generational conflict between the Chinese
born first generation and the American born second generation.2 Louis Chu s 1961 novel Eat a

However, I will argue that interpreting Asian American culture exclusively in terms of the master
narratives of generational conflict and filial relation essentializes
Asian American culture, obscuring the particularities and incommensurabilities of class, gender,
and national diversities among Asians; the reduction of ethnic cultural politics to struggles between
first and second generations displaces (and privatizes) inter community differences into a familial
opposition. To avoid this homogenizing of Asian Americans as exclusively hierarchical and
familial, I would contextualize the vertical generational model of culture with the more horizontal
relationship represented in Diana Chang s The Oriental Contingent. In Chang s short story, two
young women avoid the discussion of their Chinese backgrounds because each desperately fears
that the other is more Chinese, more authentically tied to the original culture. The narrator, Connie,
is certain that her friend Lisa never referred to her own background because it

Negative Effects On Animals
For several generations, animals have been entertaining humans. From sitting in zoo exhibits to
being paraded around in flashy circuses, animals, especially exotic ones, have drawn large
audiences. A close look at a ferocious lion or a dancing elephant wearing a headdress is often
what captivates people, since these spectacles are often unusual and fascinating. However, for lions
to be viewed up close and elephants to dance, they must be held captive and trained for desired
behavior. This captivity and training raises a question: is captivity detrimental to global animal
ecology and health? Many animal activists claim that captivity is abusive, but animal entertainment
organizations, such as zoos, circuses, and animal theme parks, promote environmental health
through ecological education of children and adults as well as funding research for conservation.
During SeaWorld commercials, orcas and sea lions playfully splash around in crystal blue waters.
Likewise, zoos display animals in beautiful habitats, yet many of the animals natural habitats are
depleting due to acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, the destruction of the world s rain
forests, and phytoplankton blooms and coral bleaching (Bonner 81). These man created global
issues are forcing several animals to the brink of extinction. According to the International Union

world s remaining birds are threatened with

Introduction
The business environment that is significantly influence by the process of globalization determines
companies to develop different types of strategies that allow them to create competitive advantage.
Some of them focus on reducing the prices of their products. This objective is usually reached by
addressing the outsourcing strategy of some of their processes. This helps them reduce production
costs, which leads to reduced prices of these companies products and services. This allows
companies that use outsourcing to increase their market share.
Other companies prefer to focus on strategies based on differentiation in order to create competitive
advantage. In such cases, companies study their competitors and determine what types

Sports In The 1920s Essay
The 1920s has been called the Golden Age of American Sports. It also has been called the Age of
the Spectator. The United States had a strong economy for most of that decade. Many workers
had more leisure time. New and bigger stadiums and gymnasiums were built. The introduction of
radio made it easier for fans to keep up with their favorite teams. Newspapers increased their
coverage of sports. Improvements in roads made it possible for fans to travel to athletic events in
distant cities. For the first time, large numbers of Americans began to pay money to watch other
people compete in athletic contests.
Baseball was the national pastime in the 1920s. More people went to baseball games, more people

Notre Dame, coached by Knute Rockne, became the most famous college football team. Illinois
star Harold Red Grange became a household name. The best college teams could compete in bowl
games, such as the famous Rose Bowl, held in California.
Boxing was popular too. Heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was almost as famous as Ruth.
Horse racing, golf, and tennis all had their fans. College basketball was still a young sport.
Professional football and basketball were minor sports.
North Carolina followed most of these trends, although professional boxing and horse racing events
were not widely held in the state because of their association with gambling.
Baseball was very popular in North Carolina in the 1920s. Many communities had professional
minor league teams. The piedmont league had teams in such cities as Raleigh, Durham,
Greensboro, High Point, and Winston. Charlotte had a team in the South Atlantic League. Many
teams players came from the local communities. The best players could advance to the major
leagues. Rivalries could be fierce. Games between nearby cities, like Raleigh and Durham, could
attract large crowds on weekends or holidays such as the Fourth of July. Most colleges and high
schools had teams. In fact, college baseball was more popular than college basketball during the

The Field Of Bioinformatics Is The Process Of Technology
1.In your own words, describe what the field of bioinformatics is; write one paragraph (about
300 words) about this; be very descriptive. The field of bioinformatics is the process of
technology by the use of computers (BioPlanet, 2015). This field manages biological
information (BioPlanet, 2015). We all use computers on a regular basis, but computers are
capable of much more they can store biological information, gather this information, analyze and
integrate genetic information as well (BioPlanet, 2015). All these things can be applied towards
drug discoveries like gene based development (BioPlanet, 2015). Bioinformatics just recently
became more popular since the availability of genomic information (BioPlanet, 2015). Now,
because of the popularity of bioinformatics it has become a very important part of biology in
many areas (BMIRC, 2015). In a type of biology called molecular biology bioinformatics is used
in the extraction of results and data (BMIRC, 2015). Take another field for example, genetics
and genomics, it sequences genomes and observes their mutations (BMIRC, 2015). It also plays
an important part in organizing biological and gene data (BMIRC, 2015). Both of these are
examples of how bioinformatics is in a lot of areas of biology (BMIRC, 2015).The tools in
bioinformatics help in the comparison of data such as genetic and genomic (BMIRC, 2015). It
also helps you receive a better understanding of molecular biology (BMIRC, 2015). At a deeper

Schools And Classrooms Are Those With Special Needs
A1. One of the major diversity groups in this country in schools/classrooms are those with special
needs. You are probably guaranteed to have at least two kids in your class that suffer from learning
disabilities or disabilities in general. These students need special attention, from their curriculum to
the treatment of their peers. Special educationstudents are spending more time in the classroom,
not just for educational purposes but for social purposes as well. Challenges that teachers face
with these students is making sure that they are included in the classroom on a day to day basis,
and that they are adjusting curriculum to suit the child s needs. More times than not the child will
get the same work as other students and it would be worked on either at the child s pace and
graded accordingly, or taken to their resource classrooms to work on it with their resource teachers.
Challenges that special education students face are not being able to understand or keep up with
the work in the classroom. They often feel separated from their peers or maybe even not being
accepted by their peers. The challenges they face such as wheel chairs, crutches etc may keep them
at a slower pace than the other students or get in the way when student are moving around the
classroom. They often are not with their peers, but separated into smaller classes so they are not as
socially excepted as other students.
Another major group of students that are in a classroom are those of different

Stereotypical Roles of Australian Males Essay
Stereotypical Roles of Australian Males
The typical Australian: lazy, beer guzzling, faded blue singlets, thongs, slang words. This is the
dominant reading formed by the media, commonly in advertisements and novels. The image
constructed by such media is one of an unfit couch potato who sits around all day drinking and
watching television. This stereotype is not only downgrading, but constructs Australian males as
underachievers in society. Some Australians may be like this, as for many the pursuit of leisure is
a serious business. Indeed texts such as Chris Franklin s Bloke (2000) and The Wind and the
Monkey (1999) support this theory of the common Australian man. However texts such as

right. There are many scenes in the film where Dundee was seen knocking someone out for some
reason or another, but at the same time the viewer is still positioned to look at his positive aspects.
Crocodile Dundee is set in the cultural context of outback Australia and it s Aborigines. Michael
Dundee was born in the Australian outback and raised by the Aborigines of his area. He sometimes

Australia nothing changes, the towns are small and everybody knows one another. The social

Symptoms And Treatment Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Essay
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS or sometimes called Lou Gehrig s Disease,
is a progressive neurological disease affecting the nerves that control voluntary muscle movement.
It is the most common type of motor neuron disease. The body isn t able to operate as it normally
does due to the muscles weakening overtime. As the disease progresses, it starts to damage nerves
of other vital areas of the body. When the body isn t able to breath the way it should causing
respiratory failure and other things start to go wrong, the body has no choice, but to shut down and
die. (ALS Association)
Lou Gehrig s disease came into public awareness from a famous New York Yankees baseball player
who was forced to retire after developing the disease and died two years later. It was originally
discovered in 1869 by a French neurologist named Jean Martin Charcot. He was the first man to be
able to connect motor neurons in the spinal cord to the ALS disease. (Medical News Today)
The name Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is derived from Greek origin. Amyotrophic broken down
with A meaning no, myo referring to muscles, and trophic meaning nourishment. The three roots
equal the meaning of no muscle nourishment . When muscles lose their nourishment, they are not
able to stay strong and can withhold their shape. Lateral being the spinal cord and its position to

Symbolism In The Century Quilt By Marilyn Nelson Waniek
Throughout American history, quilting has been a major part of African American culture.
Starting at the time of slavery to relay information about safe routes in the Underground
Railroad, this tradition has continued and has begun to take on many different levels of
significance to this community. Used as a tool to escape racial persecution throughout history
physically and mentally, quilting has acted as an art that transcends racial barriers and to bring
the races together in a positive way. In The Century Quilt , poet Marilyn Nelson Waniek
develops complex meanings of the quilt using the literary devices of color symbolism, time
shifts, and a warm atmosphere to effectively demonstrate the theme of love in families
transcending the idea of race. Color drives a significant amount of the meaning in this poem, as
the idea is used in describing the characters and objects throughout the poem and in creating the
atmosphere of the work. This was especially prevalent in the description of the quilt in lines 15
through 17 as having Van Dyke brown squares , white squares , and one square the yellow brown
of Mama s cheeks . By having these different skin tones present, Waniek is representing the races
represented in her family, which includes African American and European roots. Including the
sweetgum lead in each of the squares, this further emphasizes that while the speaker s great great

The Importance Of Permalinks
In simple words, a permalink is the web address of your website or its live pages. When you post

ignores web pages with long and complicated URLs when it has to display the most authentic

messy permalinks as SPAM and don t visit them because of the fear of being attacked by online

Roman Empire Vs Germanic Society Essay
While both Roman society and Germanic society do not view slaves as full people each society

While both societies have positive aspects to their treatment of slaves I believe it would be
better to be a slave in a Germanic society rather than a Roman society. In a Germanic society a

Roman law does not recognize the ability of a slave to marry. Any physical relations with a slave
in Roman law, even if consensual were not permitted, nor were family relationships among
slaves recognized by law (Civilizations 111). The inability of slaves to enjoy the normalcy of
relationships with family members or a partner shows how much more restrictive Roman
society was. It also shows that Romans viewed their slaves as less human than did Germanic
people. When slaves were being punished for crimes such as thievery or other common crimes
in Salic areas they could face very harsh physical punishment, such as lashing and castration if
male (Civilizations ). If slaves confessed to their crimes they, or more likely their owner, would
be able to pay a fine, and restore the stolen property, or value of the property, in order to prevent
physical harm as a punishment for their crime. Roman laws about crimes concerning slaves are
about punishment for killing slaves by free people, other than their owner, or maintaining slaves
loyalty to their owners (Civilizations 114). This shows that these were the problems that the
Romans were dealing with and in comparison to the Germanic problems, murdering slaves was not
just a petty crime. Laws concerning crimes committed by or against salves display that the Roman
Empire s problem was not with minor crime but with serious offenses

The Importance Of Dreams In James Welch s Fools Crow
A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you are fast asleep. This nostalgic melody sung by
Disney s Cinderella expresses the importance and meanings that dreams can have. In Native
American culture, dreams are used as tools to guide one through life. Many big decisions made
by Native Americans are influenced by dreams. It is said that supernatural powers or omens
from spirits or gods are to be received via dreams or visions. In receiving them, magical abilities,
or the ability to look into the future can be bestowed onto one. In Fools Crow, James Welch,
illustrates several characters having visions and dreams. Throughout the book the dreams are
seen as visions of the future. Welch uses these messages to reflect upon Native American culture
and to foreshadow motives or events that will affect the characters later in the book. Mik api,
the medicine man has a dream about a raven. Mik api asked White Man s Dog to prepare the

My Favorite Class
I wake up at 7:35 a.m. everyday. I take a shower, after that I get dressed; then I go downstairs and
make myself breakfast. I eat and then go back upstairs and brush my teeth. Finally, I leave for
school, and I get to my first block, which is seminar at around 8:20. I wait for my friend Erik to
get there and then we walk in together. Seminar is easily my favorite class of the day because I
have a couple of my friends in that class. My best friend in that class is Cameron, but I am also
friends with Darius and Emma. Me and Cameron have been friends since middle school, and we
used to hang out almost everyday. Now, Cameron has a girlfriend so he doesn t hang out with me
anymore and it makes me sad. Cameron is funny, but he is terrible at making plans. Therefore, half
of the time when we want to hang out we end up just sitting at home bored because he can t decide
what he wants to do. Darius and I have been friends since elementary school. He goes to James
River High Schoolnow, and I go to Lord Botetourt High School (LB), so we hardly see each
other. Me and Darius grew up playing basketball together which made us very close as kids. I
miss hanging out with Darius. Darius is shy, so many people don t know how funny darius
actually is. I miss seeing him outside of school a lot like I used to. Emma is a good friend, but
we don t talk that much outside of school and work like we used to. She is nice and funny, but
one time she got her dog to lick a m m and then said, Ryan

Dan Buettner s Three Blue Zones
In the TED Talk How to Live to be 100+ , Dan Buettner talks about lifestyles that are helping
people live to be 100+. According to the Danish Twin Study, biology only factors into 10 percent
of how long we live, the other 90 percent it based off lifestyle (Buettner 2009). Dan Buettner and
his colleagues found three Blue Zones to try to find what types of lifestyles these people are
living to become centenarians. Blue Zones are places where people live longer than the majority
of people in the world. The Blue Zones are in Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, California.
They found similarities in their lifestyles that help them to live to be 100+. Those similarities are:
they do not do strenuous exercise, have a period of down time, have a word... Show more content on

People in the Blue Zones put their families first. They take care of everyone in the family, ranging
from young children to aging parents. People in the Blue Zone not only care for their aging parents
but also treat them like celebrities. Dan Buettner (qtd in Gulli 2008) emphasizes that A stop in any
local taverna reveals just how much glory these seniors get. Usually we see swimsuit calendars
inside North American sports bars, says Dan Buettner, but when he was in Sardinia, it was
Centenarian of the Month calendars. Also, their relationship with their community is also very
important. Those surrounding themselves with the right people allows them to add on many years
to their life. Buettner (2009) states, They all tend to belong to a faith based community, which is
worth between four and 14 extra years of life expectancy if you do it four times a month. And the
biggest thing here is they also belong to the right tribe. They were either born into or they
proactively surround themselves with the right people, they purposely surround themselves with
the right group of people in their lives. The relationships in the Blue Zone societies can be
implemented into the lifestyles of the people in Cohort Two; however, many of their ideas cannot
be implemented in our lifestyles

Midsummer Night s Dream Love
Sitting on a porch swing with one s true love hugging and kissing as the moon smiles down upon
them, seems like the perfect situation for true love. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from
the truth. Shakespeare presents the truth about true love in his comical tragedy A Midsummer
Night s Dream. Lysander clearly stated loves situation when he told Hermia the course of true
love never did run smooth (Griffiths 94). In some ways Lysander s declaration becomes the play s
structural and thematic point by which Shakespeare uses to explore the storms of love (Bloom 12).
In A Midsummer Night s Dream, Shakespeare uses young lovers to depict how love masters young
people and pushes them to extreme measures (Comtois 20). The... Show more content on

Demetrius, though, chose to pursue someone more appealing to his eye, Hermia. Now, Helena
whishes to be literally translated into Hermia so as to regain Demetrius affection (Young 156).
Helena pleads with Demetrius to use [her] but as your spaniel: spurn me, strike me, / Neglect
me, lose me; only give me leave, / Unworthy as I am, to follow you (Griffiths 130). Shakespeare,
no doubt included this to show how pathetic and deperate a person can be, and the things they will
do to get love in return. The characteristic Shakespeare gave to Helena is sadly a characteristic in
the world today.
Titania states that these are the forgeries of jealousy and this becomes another theme of love for
Shakespeare to play on (Griffiths 124). Oberon is jealous of the love Titania has for a little
Indian boy that she takes care of, and he wants this Indian boy and all of Titania s love (Griffiths
125). In order to get what he wants, Oberon is going to punish [Titania] by putting the juice of
Cupid s flower on her eyelids so that when she wakes up she will fall in love with a hideous
creature (Garner 87). Puck turns Bottom into a donkey and he becomes Titania s love, which
pleases Oberon. When Oberon reverses the spell and Titania realizes her actions, she subsides to
his desires. Oberon successfully taunts her into obedience (Garner 87). Shakespear shows that love
can cause jealousy, which in turn can cause a person to resort

One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Literary Analysis
In the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, Ken Kesey uses machine imagery to develop the
theme that society forces people to conform. The novel is able to portray machine imagery and
conformity by using the Patients, Combine, and Bromden s Dream. To begin with, Ken Kesey
implies machine imagery into the patient s to develop the theme of society forces people to
conform . One example of the author using machine imagery is... What the Chronics are...or
most of us...are machines with flaws inside that can t be repaired, flaws born in, or flaws beat in
over so many years of the guy running head on into solid things that by the time the hospital
found him he was bleeding rust in some vacant lot (Kesey, 16). The chronics are patients that are
metaphorically described as broken machines that can t be fixed. Once the machines get fixed
again they can once again function back into society and be normal . Society rejects broken
machines because it does not match their ideal idea of how society should be or work. Society
does this because the society itself decides who is sane or insane. Which in other words, those
who can conform are sane and those who can t conform are insane. This is the ideal idea that
society wants, which is that society forces people to conform. Another example of the author
using machine imagery is... You can see by his eyes how they burned him out over there; his eyes
are all smoked up and gray and deserted inside like blown fuses (Kesey 16) .

The Greek Storage Jar ( Amphora ) Depicting Man And Boy
The Greek Storage Jar (Amphora) depicting man and boy was created around 550 540 BCE. It
was found in Ancient Greece. The amphora storage jar is made out of terracotta and it is eleven
inches in height. Then it was painted on with black and brown paint. This jars colors are used to
create contrast, the lines are used to unify it, the shapes on the object are the most important part
of the image and patterns are used on the jar to help fill the space on the jar. Therefore colors are
used to create contrast. There are three different colors on the jar: the natural colorof the terracotta,
the brown paintand the black paint. Since terracotta is a neutral color it provides an excellent
background for the painting. Black is a very dark color and it makes the people and the designs
stick out. People use black paint when they want their design to be important. Brown is a neutral
color and it is used to show the not so prominent part of the image. The little bit of brown paint
shows the ground the people are standing on. It also unifies the other places where it appears.
Looking at the top there is a pattern painted with both the black and brown paint to show contrast.
After contrast is seen unity is also seen with lines. Lines are used to unify the artistic image on the
Greek storage jar. The thicker the line the more important it is, the thinner the line the less
important it is. The lines create objects which then create the entire image. Many different patterns
are also

The Simpsons Satire
During the late 1980s, The Simpsons, was introduced as an animated cartoon show and has
tremendously grown into a popularity of the American culture. Matt Groening, creator and
executive producer of The Simpsons, has displayed twenty seven seasons for over thirty years on
20th Century Fox Television. Jesssamyn Nehaus, doctor and avid popular media consumer, states
the following, In...respect, the show very much reflects the sensibilities of its originator, Matt
Groening. As a Los Angeles cartoonist, Groening relentlessly satirized the basic elements of the
American dream, portraying schools, families, and workplaces as prisons of the mind and soul
(763). The Simpsonspresent an irony of a dysfunctional family whose stories and characters are...

In the past, the acceptance of homosexuality was extremely difficult, as it has now been
embraced by society. One episode in particular, Homer s Phobia, first aired in 1997, the
Simpsons family decide to visit a collectibles shop, where they meet the store dealer, John. The
family and John become friendly, leading to Homer wanting to invite him and his wife for dinner
next time. However, Marge eventually tells Homer that John is gay; Homer is completely shocked
and instantaneously, his attitude and demeanor changes toward John. The hyper irony behind this
episode is a reflection of the way American society is portrayed; through the television show, the
depiction of homosexuality aids American society to take charge of whom they are as an
individual. Carl Matheson, a philosopher, states the following, Furthermore, this process of
undercutting runs so deeply that we cannot regard the show as merely cynical; it manages to
undercut its cynicism too. The constant process of undercutting is what I mean by hyper ironism
(312). To explain, this is the hyper ironic satire utilized by The Simpsons, enabling society to
reflect the cartoon show as more than vulgar comments. In a particular scene, Bart walks past
Homer as he is watching TV and notices he is wearing a new Hawaiian shirt. Ultimately, Homer
asks Bart where

Diversity Reflection Analysis
Over the course of the semester, I had the privilege of spending my Monday afternoons with
children at Discovery Elementary School in St. Cloud. I assisted in looking after the kids during
their after school program, Kidstop, and my responsibilities ranged from consoling teary eyes to
assisting with the reading of a girl attending Spanish immersion school. I genuinely enjoyed
cultivating relationships with curious kids from numerous diverse backgrounds. Throughout my
volunteering experience, I utilized teaching styles and knowledge gained in Education111 to include
diverse learners, create a safe learning environment for everyone, and communicate effectively with
students.
The first standard effective procedure (SEP) I utilized during my volunteering at Discovery was
accommodating diverse learners (SEP 3). This SEP requires educators to recognize the diversity
in their classroom and effectively address and include their multiple groups. The sub SEP I used is
3.4H, which states that educators must understand diversity and actively provide connections into
the curriculum. To me, this SEP is important because it centers around refusing to be colorblind
and ignoring the various backgrounds in a classroom. Growing up in Sartell, this SEP vastly
improved my ability to recognize and embrace diversity. Throughout my own education, I was
exposed to some economic diversity, but I met few people with a race or ethnicity significantly
different than my own. At Discovery, I was

  • 2. Exploration of Castles Essay Exploration of Castles A.D 450 saw the creation of castles. Romans were replaced by Anglo Saxon foes, and these did leave behind a system of castles however these were for Motte and Bailey castles built in the reign of Edward the confessor. The Norman invasion of 1066 was one of the causes for castles to become an important part of defence. After king Harold s defeat by William the conqueror, William was concerned about how he would control the country with only a limited number of troops facing a hostile environment. He did not have enough troops to station them everywhere, so he used a very useful tactic that had worked in Normandy previously. This was a simplified castle known as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pathways and ladders that allowed reach to important areas of the castle have been removed or destroyed; and the enemy are at a disadvantage because they are facing attack from a raised level. As time progressed, the situation in England changed. The Normans were now in control of England and there was little resistance from hostile sources, therefore a concentration on the development of castles occurred. Less time was needed for castles to be constructed quickly and therefore time could be used to search for better materials for building. This meant that stone could be used instead of wood, which was used previously. By 1100, the earth that had held Motte and bailey castles had now settles, and was capable of sustaining much larger weights. With the change to stone castles, fire was not a concern as it was when Motte and baileys were in use. Square keeps were used when the development of stone castles were quite young. They were often built in the most important places, to show how powerful the Normans were. Square keeps were good because of the immense thickness of the walls. The walls in square keeps were often up to 5 metres thick, and 30 metres high. This added to the strength of the castle because the walls could easily withstand attacks from siege weapons such as magonels and trebuchets. Text Box: Because of the ... • 3. Relief, Recovery, Regulation Relief, Recovery, Regulation When Franklin personally addressed the Democratic Party Convention to accept the nomination, he was the first candidate to do so and thus received a lot of attention. These were the words from the acceptance speech that set the tone for his campaign and his administration: I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a political campaign; it is a call to arms. Give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in this crusade to restore America to its own people. 1 These words might have been just platitudes, uttered by another progressive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While many of these programs were wasteful, they succeeded to some extent in keeping people out of foreclosure, out of starvation, and propped up morale. I think they could have been more successful had the Administration not shot itself in the foot with a perverse economic tightening in 1937. Recovery One of the best examples of a successful recovery program was the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). This program was proposed by Senator George Norris 5 during the Hoover Administration. Resurrected and expanded under Roosevelt, despite opposition from private utilities, The TVA constructed and maintained dams, provided hydroelectric power where there was no electricity before, and stimulated investment in the region. The TVA is one of the shining success stories of the New Deal. A less successful program was called the National Recovery Act (NRA). The NRA established a minimum wage, set working hours, and attempted to regulate prices. The act invested the President with vast authority to intervene in the market economy. One example was power to regulate aspects of interstate commerce, a power that the Constitution invests in Congress. The act was voluntary to business and riddled with bureaucracy. In May 1935 the US Supreme Court, in Schechter Poultry Corporation V. United States, unanimously ruled the NRA unconstitutional. In fact, 11 out of 16 of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Lao Tzu Leadership Analysis Lao Tzu is considered the Father of Taoism and was searching for an individual s path of natural goodness. He once said Be the Chief, but never the lord. This quote has been very inspirational to me throughout my Coast Guard career and has guided me to my definition of Leadership. A lord is given this title by inheritance or positional power granted by landowners. A Chief is chosen by the village. The person is selected to make the right decisions for the benefit of the people. It is earned. Based on my interpretation of Lao Tzu s quote, my definition of leadershipis to have others follow by choice not by mere power. A person cannot rule by force given to them by rank and expect subordinates to follow. They must demonstrate leading by example and be a role model for others to follow. Leadership Influences As I reflect back, I have seen my definition in my mentors and supervisors. A short list of the mentors I revered include: CWO4 Kenneth Hawko, MSTCM Judd Reno, Commander John Humpage, CWO4 William Thomas, and BMC Mike Hunt. Their leadership seemed to naturally be in their personalities but I now realize it was so prominent because I saw them as my leaders. Those traits are what made me choose to follow them. In other words, I get projected free cash flow. Secondly, Ibbotson and Capital IQ provide their bond rating, capital structure, average historical long term risk free rate and beta. • 7. Urbanization And Commercialization On Literature The Effects of Urbanization and Commercialization on Literature Nature is inescapable. It surrounds humanity and sneaks its way into daily life. Society draws on experiences with the environment to produce art, theater, and literature. As Tim Ingold, a professor of Social Anthropology, explains, ... nature furnishes the substance, culture the form. The imaginary worlds of stories are created from sensations gained from the environment, and culture is a medium that guides the writer in expressing his or her tale. Tales of Moonlight and Rain (1776) by Ueda Akinari was written during a time of pilgrimages, uprisings, and intellectual pursuits. Though set in the past, the book shows the influences of his environment within his nine ghost stories. The continued urbanization and commercialization of society influenced the literature produced in the early modern period, as well as views on the supernatural, by expanding on the themes of travel, loyalty, and philosophy as shown in Akinari s Tales of Moonlight and Rain. As Japan became more urbanized and roads improved, many commoners became enthralled by the opportunity to explore the world around them. However, since simply traveling to see the world was prohibited by the shogunate, many explored the world through pilgrimages. These travelers wrote dairies and poetry that described the sights and sounds they experience, expanding the culture of travel through their literature. According to Anthony H. Chamber, the translator of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Upon hearing that one of the extra credit assignments consisted of reading a book published in 1937, I was not too thrilled. However, after skimming through the first few pages of How to Win Friends and Influence People, I became instantly intrigued and skimming turned into close reading. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course I never meant any harm, but there have been several periods of time when she has resented me for it. Not only have I made others resent me at times, but I have resented others for being criticized. Just recently, I received a B on an English paper that I put hours into. Obviously, I am not the best writer, but I put a lot of work into that paper and consulted with the professor multiple times before handing it in. Now, I understand that constructive criticism is necessary in order to enhance one s writing skills, but the professor had absolutely nothing good to say about my writing. This made me resent class, resent seeing her, resent doing reading assignments, and above all resent writing. The key word here is resent. Carnegie sums this up well by saying, Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a person s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance, and arouses resentment (23). This ties together two points, the emphasis on one s sense of importance and resentment. Going off of this idea of criticism, I like how Carnegie touched upon it later in the book. Another principle of his is: Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person. This is such a key principle because, as stated above, criticism is necessary in some cases. The hard part about criticism is that it can invoke feelings of resentment. Therefore, in order to provide criticism in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Born in Alopeke, Socrates belonged to the tribe Antiochis. Not much is known about his early life, but his father was a sculptor, or stonemason, and his mother a midwife. Rather than accepting the the development of what he thought of as immorality within his city, Socrates questioned the societally accepted notion of Might makes right , or rather, whatever somebody says, goes, as long as they have the strength to defend themselves. Later on, Socrates student Plato referred to him as The Gadfly , a person who challenges status quos and potential social normalities. According to Plato, in his book Apology , Socrates friend Chaerephon asked the Oracle of Delphi if anyone was wiser than Socrates. The Oracle said no one was. Socrates did not believe the Oracle, because he believed he possessed no wisdom whatsoever. He proceeded to test the riddle, by approaching men considered to be wise by the common people and questioned them. Socrates thus concluded that while they were considered wise, they had no answers to questions of larger, and philosophical nature. It was at that point that Socrates knew the Oracle was correct. The Industrial Revolution swept through Europe and struggles between old world and new world ideas began to rise exponentially. In what we now called the United States, the American Civil war began as a result. The effects of the spreading new ideas influences the musicsociety greatly. In earlier times, musicians were usually employed by the church or the court (Dobney). Famous composers, such as Beethoven and Mozart, would play at venues that the church or royalty designated. People now know this to be called the Orchestral Standardization, the string instruments were located in the front of the orchestra, with the woodwind behind, followed by the brass instruments, and the precision instruments in the very back (Detrick). Orchestras made of these instruments were capable of rich and varied sound combinations ideally suited for the new Classical form of the symphony (pg 546 Cunningham). Comparing Novel and Film Version of Snow Falling on Cedars It is no easy task to create a work through writing or film that has an impact on society. In writing, one must discuss and analyze a relevant topic that will have an impact on the readers. One must also present stunning sensory images through words in order to create a complete understanding for the reader. In filmmaking it is not much different, but there must be striking visual imagery in combination with a fitting musical score in order to give the viewer of the film the full experience. There must also be historical accuracy, both in writing and film. In either case, it can take years to create such a captivating piece of work. David Guterson s novel Snow ... In delving deeper into the issues that deal with Kabuo s trial, the effects of war, and the romance between young Ishmael and Hatsue, Snow Falling on Cedars explores human emotion and behavior with astonishing accuracy. In the novel, David Guterson spent significant amounts of time exploring the way language can be used to convey a story line. Guterson went back and forth with scenes from past and present in the novel, combining both and portraying them thickly with literary devices. One of the most predominant literary devices in the novel was the use of imagery. The prevalent image of the story is the snow as it fell upon the cedars that populated San Piedro Island. Guterson invoked this image on page after page throughout the novel, making it apparent that the snow veiling the cedar forests could be a metaphor for the way prejudices veil honesty and truth in human behavior. The fact that the island was stricken with the worst snowstorm in twenty years during Kabuo Miyamoto s trial was further evidence to such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Analysis Of Daniel Handler s A Series Of Unfortunate Events Most authors tend to write their books in a cheerful way. Daniel Handler, on the other hand, writes in a gloomy style, showing the not so nice things that can happen to people. For example, the three Baudelaire orphans in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Siblings who just lose their parents in a deadly house fire and have to deal with the trouble known as Count Olaf, a villain after their enormous inheritance. Handler wrote the 13 books in the series under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket. A Series of Unfortunate Eventsis Handler s best known work. In the last book of the series, the three Baudelaires are in the middle of the ocean on a boat after leaving a burning hotel where they worked undercover. Unfortunately, the children are accompanied by Count Olaf, the man after their money. And the Baudelaire fortune is finally mine! Olaf cackled Finally, I am a very wealthy man, which means everybody must do what I say! Was Olaf s reaction to their predicament even though his statement is completely false. Snicket made Count Olaf the antagonist in the story, a manipulative villain where in his mind money equals power. He lives in his own fairytale where he is superior. To make the Baudelaires situation worse, a storm is added to the mix showing that the kids can never get a break, pushing their intelligence and strength. • 18. I Got Trapped By My Own Success Essay Alexander Weygers lived a life of creative adventure on an income so low it never interested the Internal Revenue Service. He continually complained that man s essential failure was to know when enough was enough, and he used the line at which he would need to write a check to the IRS as his definition of enough. There was one occasion, though, when he flirted with that line. I got trapped by my own success, he said. Weygers dalliance with the tax man came in the late 1950s when he traded a piece of sculpture for an Exacta single lens camera. It was a particularly cold winter on the Monterey Peninsula. Toward the conclusion of a trip to a junkyard in Salinas, heavy sleet began to fall. As he waited in the bed of his truck for the storm to pass, Weygers picked up the camera that happened to be beside him and began taking super close up photos of the raindrops on the windshield. The clouds eventually parted and rays of light pierced the droplets, causing a refraction in his lens. Weygers hurried home and began playing with light refractions on leaves and frozen over chuckholes. He then raced to the beach, taking similar zoomed in shots of a piece of seaweed and an ant colony. The result was a never before seen, free form photography or artography, as Weygers termed it. In his studio, he would suspend drops of water from the bottom side of a sheet of glass. Then, using a macro lens he created himself, Weygers would look into the inside of the raindrop and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The central idea around Charles Darwin s theory is that species must evolve to be more effective while those that do not are left behind. One such human evolution is that of making certain tasks easier. While either from a physical standpoint such as lifting a heavy weight with one s legs or back as oppose to just using their less powerful arms, or from a mental standpoint like making a smaller deal out of something that should mean more. While the first example is a generally healthy one, the latter is a dangerous way of coping with hard truths. In Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried some of the soldiers constantly try to quantify items brought from war to make the brutality of it less heinous in their minds. O Brien illustrates this image to make readers aware of their own taking the easy way out of situations that sometimes would be better faced head on in reality. To protect against the literal destruction of war, LieutenantCross uses numbers to disassociate himself from the barbarities he is committing and witnessing. O Brien exhibits the image of Lieutenant Cross counting the literal weights of items in the first short story, The Things They Carried . Cross says, The weapon weighed 7.5 pounds unloaded, 8.2 pounds with its full 20 round magazine. Depending on numerous factors, such as topography and psychology, the riflemen carried anywhere from 12 to 20 magazines, usually in cloth bandoliers, adding on another 8.4 pounds at minimum, 14 pounds at maximum ... • 21. The Search For Justice In Ian Mcewan s Atonement The pictures painted in one s head may seem harmless or even helpful to that single individual; however, once those pictures are introduced to the real world they can take a drastic turn. What might seem right to one could have consequences that harm those around him or her, causing chaos and destruction. Individuals are blinded by what they believe in and many fail to stop and think about how their actions will affect those closest to them. Briony Tallis is a prime example of this; she wants justice to be served for a story that is made up in her head and she does not realize the toll it will take on those around her. In Ian McEwans Atonement, Briony s wandering imagination leads her to seek a fictional justice that causes people around her to suffer while the truth remains hidden; although she later tries to amend her wrongdoings, the damage has already been done and she is unsuccessful. During her search for justice, Briony s imagination and need to create stories strongly obscures her idea of what a rightful justice is. She [is] one of those children possessed by a desire to have the world just so (McEwan 4). Everything she experiences is automatically turned into an event from a story, thus causing her mind to focus on what would go along with the story rather than what is actually happening in the real world. This is partially because she is only 13, making her too young to understand the consequences of paying too much attention to the artificial world rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Literary Analysis Of Roman Fever In Roman Fever by Edith Wharton s, Grace Ansley and Alida Slade begin to discuss their past and present with one another revealing some skeletons in the closet. Wharton wanted the readers to focus on the betrayal from a so called friend Mrs. Ansley. Furthermore, Wharton wanted the readers to think about deceit in the story by actively misleading Mrs. Slade. In the end, what was noted to be miserable, gains notoriety by revealing the ultimate secret. The setting of Roman Fever takes place in a Roman restaurant terrace. Surrounded by beautiful sunsets and prior history, It tends to take a toll on both women that leads to a great deal of emotion. As young aged women in Rome, young Grace was always sweet and quiet. Alida was engaged to Delphin. Suspecting that her friend may have feelings for her fiancГ©, Alida wrote a misleading letter to Grace, requesting that they meet at the Colosseum, signed with Delphin Slades initials. However, the temperatures near the Forum and Colosseum at night can be brutal, and young Grace is liable to become ill. It ultimately led to Grace and Alida s friendship to deteriorate. One can find it rather difficult to believe that these two women were actually childhood companions. They appear to be the opposite of one another. Mrs. Slade, who is described as fuller, and higher in color, with a small determined nose supported with vigorous black eyebrows, (Wharton) seems to be as arrogant and envious of Mrs. Ansley. • 23. The Global War to the Great Depression A horrific global war led to an equally heinous economic recession, triggering global fear and lack of guidance. World leaders stood to the challenge of mending the shattered 100 year peace and economy in Europe. America, it seemed, desired no part in this scramble for order, turning its back to the international world. Through the Great War to the Great Depression, the transforming world not only caused America to withdraw from the world, but also allowed Franklin Delano Roosevelt an opportunity to refine all aspects of American standards and life. Despite only a brief participation in the Great War, a diplomatically satiated America swiftly closed its doors to the international world. However, this was not without good reason; according to Alan Brinkley, the United Statesgovernment had appropriated $32 billion for expenses directly relating to the conflict (621). At over 90% of the national gross domestic product at the time, war expenses were an uncomfortable cost to American leaders who, in addition to the post WWI recession where millions lost their jobs, decided America needed a break internationally (Brinkley 621 632). Not only did America refuse to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations, they disarmed military forces, severely limited immigration, and passed one of the highest tariffs in United States history (Kennedy). Asian American Culture In Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club Alternatively, the traditional practices of family continuity and hierarchy may be figured as oppressively confining, as in Mirikitani s poem, in which the two generations of daughters contest the more restrictive female roles of the former generations. In either case, many Asian American discussions portray immigration and relocation to the United Statesin terms of a loss of the original culture in exchange for the new American culture. To avoid this homogenizing of Asian Americans as exclusively hierarchical and familial, I would contextualize the vertical generational model of culture with the more horizontal relationship represented in Diana Chang s The Oriental Contingent. In Chang s short story, two young women avoid the discussion of their Chinese backgrounds because each desperately fears that the other is more Chinese, more authentically tied to the original culture. • 25. Negative Effects On Animals For several generations, animals have been entertaining humans. From sitting in zoo exhibits to being paraded around in flashy circuses, animals, especially exotic ones, have drawn large audiences. A close look at a ferocious lion or a dancing elephant wearing a headdress is often what captivates people, since these spectacles are often unusual and fascinating. However, for lions to be viewed up close and elephants to dance, they must be held captive and trained for desired behavior. This captivity and training raises a question: is captivity detrimental to global animal ecology and health? Many animal activists claim that captivity is abusive, but animal entertainment organizations, such as zoos, circuses, and animal theme parks, promote environmental health through ecological education of children and adults as well as funding research for conservation. During SeaWorld commercials, orcas and sea lions playfully splash around in crystal blue waters. Likewise, zoos display animals in beautiful habitats, yet many of the animals natural habitats are depleting due to acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, the destruction of the world s rain forests, and phytoplankton blooms and coral bleaching (Bonner 81). Starting at the time of slavery to relay information about safe routes in the Underground Railroad, this tradition has continued and has begun to take on many different levels of significance to this community. Used as a tool to escape racial persecution throughout history physically and mentally, quilting has acted as an art that transcends racial barriers and to bring the races together in a positive way. In The Century Quilt , poet Marilyn Nelson Waniek develops complex meanings of the quilt using the literary devices of color symbolism, time shifts, and a warm atmosphere to effectively demonstrate the theme of love in families transcending the idea of race. Color drives a significant amount of the meaning in this poem, as the idea is used in describing the characters and objects throughout the poem and in creating the atmosphere of the work. This was especially prevalent in the description of the quilt in lines 15 through 17 as having Van Dyke brown squares , white squares , and one square the yellow brown of Mama s cheeks . By having these different skin tones present, Waniek is representing the races represented in her family, which includes African American and European roots. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Roman law does not recognize the ability of a slave to marry. Any physical relations with a slave in Roman law, even if consensual were not permitted, nor were family relationships among slaves recognized by law (Civilizations 111). The inability of slaves to enjoy the normalcy of relationships with family members or a partner shows how much more restrictive Roman society was. It also shows that Romans viewed their slaves as less human than did Germanic people. When slaves were being punished for crimes such as thievery or other common crimes in Salic areas they could face very harsh physical punishment, such as lashing and castration if male (Civilizations ). If slaves confessed to their crimes they, or more likely their owner, would be able to pay a fine, and restore the stolen property, or value of the property, in order to prevent physical harm as a punishment for their crime. Roman laws about crimes concerning slaves are about punishment for killing slaves by free people, other than their owner, or maintaining slaves loyalty to their owners (Civilizations 114). • 40. The Importance Of Dreams In James Welch s Fools Crow A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you are fast asleep. This nostalgic melody sung by Disney s Cinderella expresses the importance and meanings that dreams can have. In Native American culture, dreams are used as tools to guide one through life. Many big decisions made by Native Americans are influenced by dreams. It is said that supernatural powers or omens from spirits or gods are to be received via dreams or visions. In receiving them, magical abilities, or the ability to look into the future can be bestowed onto one. In Fools Crow, James Welch, illustrates several characters having visions and dreams. Throughout the book the dreams are seen as visions of the future. Welch uses these messages to reflect upon Native American culture and to foreshadow motives or events that will affect the characters later in the book. Mik api, the medicine man has a dream about a raven. Mik api asked White Man s Dog to prepare the sweatlodge, thus beginning White Man s Dog s apprenticeship to him. • 41. Essay on George Carlin and Radio Censorship George Carlin and Radio Censorship Americans hate the word censorship. It puts fire into the eyes of any self proclaimed, speaker of the people. but is censorship that bad, or that wrong? Censorship is an enormous part of the stability of society. One of the many types of censorship takes place on the airwaves. Comedians, George Carlin, Howard Stern, and Mncow Muller had an enormous effect on the ideals of censorship in this era, trying to prove that the FCC had no right to censor radio airwaves. They questioned why words we all hear at home cannot be spoken on the radio if listeners are given a proper warning. However, there is no need for young children to be exposed to such lude material and the American people must be more... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was thinking one night about the words you couldn t say on the public, ah, airwaves, um, the ones you definitely wouldn t say, ever. Bastard you can say, and hell and damn so I have to figure out which ones you couldn t and ever and it came down to seven but the list is open to amendment, and in fact, has been changed, uh, by now. The original seven words were sh*t, p*ss, f*ck, c*nt, c*cks*cker, m*therf*cker, and t*ts. Those are the ones that will curve your spine, grow hair on your hands and maybe, even bring us, God help us, peace without honor, and a bourbon. (Carlin, 1977) A man driving with his young son heard this broadcast and reported it to the Federal Communications Commission [FCC]. This broadcast of Carlin s Filthy Words monologue caused one of the greatest and most controversial cases in the history of broadcasting. The case of the FCC v. Pacifica Foundation. The outcome of this case has had a lasting effect on what we hear on the radio. This landmark case gave the FCC the power to regulate radio broadcasts that are indecent but not obscene. (Gunther, 1991) What does that mean, exactly? According to the government it means that the FCC can only regulate broadcasts. They can not censor broadcasts, that is determine what is offensive in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. My Favorite Class I wake up at 7:35 a.m. everyday. I take a shower, after that I get dressed; then I go downstairs and make myself breakfast. I eat and then go back upstairs and brush my teeth. Finally, I leave for school, and I get to my first block, which is seminar at around 8:20. I wait for my friend Erik to get there and then we walk in together. Seminar is easily my favorite class of the day because I have a couple of my friends in that class. My best friend in that class is Cameron, but I am also friends with Darius and Emma. Me and Cameron have been friends since middle school, and we used to hang out almost everyday. Now, Cameron has a girlfriend so he doesn t hang out with me anymore and it makes me sad. Cameron is funny, but he is terrible at making plans. Therefore, half of the time when we want to hang out we end up just sitting at home bored because he can t decide what he wants to do. Darius and I have been friends since elementary school. He goes to James River High Schoolnow, and I go to Lord Botetourt High School (LB), so we hardly see each other. Me and Darius grew up playing basketball together which made us very close as kids. I miss hanging out with Darius. Darius is shy, so many people don t know how funny darius actually is. I miss seeing him outside of school a lot like I used to. Emma is a good friend, but we don t talk that much outside of school and work like we used to. She is nice and funny, but one time she got her dog to lick a m m and then said, Ryan ... • 43. Dan Buettner s Three Blue Zones In the TED Talk How to Live to be 100+ , Dan Buettner talks about lifestyles that are helping people live to be 100+. According to the Danish Twin Study, biology only factors into 10 percent of how long we live, the other 90 percent it based off lifestyle (Buettner 2009). Dan Buettner and his colleagues found three Blue Zones to try to find what types of lifestyles these people are living to become centenarians. Blue Zones are places where people live longer than the majority of people in the world. The Blue Zones are in Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda, California. They found similarities in their lifestyles that help them to live to be 100+. Those similarities are: they do not do strenuous exercise, have a period of down time, have a word... People in the Blue Zone not only care for their aging parents but also treat them like celebrities. Dan Buettner (qtd in Gulli 2008) emphasizes that A stop in any local taverna reveals just how much glory these seniors get. Usually we see swimsuit calendars inside North American sports bars, says Dan Buettner, but when he was in Sardinia, it was Centenarian of the Month calendars. Also, their relationship with their community is also very important. Those surrounding themselves with the right people allows them to add on many years to their life. Buettner (2009) states, They all tend to belong to a faith based community, which is worth between four and 14 extra years of life expectancy if you do it four times a month. And the biggest thing here is they also belong to the right tribe. They were either born into or they proactively surround themselves with the right people, they purposely surround themselves with the right group of people in their lives. The relationships in the Blue Zone societies can be implemented into the lifestyles of the people in Cohort Two; however, many of their ideas cannot be implemented in our lifestyles ... • 44. Midsummer Night s Dream Love Sitting on a porch swing with one s true love hugging and kissing as the moon smiles down upon them, seems like the perfect situation for true love. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Shakespeare presents the truth about true love in his comical tragedy A Midsummer Night s Dream. Lysander clearly stated loves situation when he told Hermia the course of true love never did run smooth (Griffiths 94). In some ways Lysander s declaration becomes the play s structural and thematic point by which Shakespeare uses to explore the storms of love (Bloom 12). In A Midsummer Night s Dream, Shakespeare uses young lovers to depict how love masters young people and pushes them to extreme measures (Comtois 20). The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Demetrius, though, chose to pursue someone more appealing to his eye, Hermia. Now, Helena whishes to be literally translated into Hermia so as to regain Demetrius affection (Young 156). Helena pleads with Demetrius to use [her] but as your spaniel: spurn me, strike me, / Neglect me, lose me; only give me leave, / Unworthy as I am, to follow you (Griffiths 130). Shakespeare, no doubt included this to show how pathetic and deperate a person can be, and the things they will do to get love in return. The characteristic Shakespeare gave to Helena is sadly a characteristic in the world today. Titania states that these are the forgeries of jealousy and this becomes another theme of love for Shakespeare to play on (Griffiths 124). Oberon is jealous of the love Titania has for a little Indian boy that she takes care of, and he wants this Indian boy and all of Titania s love (Griffiths 125). In order to get what he wants, Oberon is going to punish [Titania] by putting the juice of Cupid s flower on her eyelids so that when she wakes up she will fall in love with a hideous creature (Garner 87). Puck turns Bottom into a donkey and he becomes Titania s love, which pleases Oberon. When Oberon reverses the spell and Titania realizes her actions, she subsides to his desires. Oberon successfully taunts her into obedience (Garner 87). Shakespear shows that love can cause jealousy, which in turn can cause a person to resort ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Literary Analysis In the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, Ken Kesey uses machine imagery to develop the theme that society forces people to conform. The novel is able to portray machine imagery and conformity by using the Patients, Combine, and Bromden s Dream. To begin with, Ken Kesey implies machine imagery into the patient s to develop the theme of society forces people to conform . One example of the author using machine imagery is... What the Chronics are...or most of us...are machines with flaws inside that can t be repaired, flaws born in, or flaws beat in over so many years of the guy running head on into solid things that by the time the hospital found him he was bleeding rust in some vacant lot (Kesey, 16). The chronics are patients that are metaphorically described as broken machines that can t be fixed. Once the machines get fixed again they can once again function back into society and be normal . Society rejects broken machines because it does not match their ideal idea of how society should be or work. Society does this because the society itself decides who is sane or insane. Which in other words, those who can conform are sane and those who can t conform are insane. This is the ideal idea that society wants, which is that society forces people to conform. Another example of the author using machine imagery is... The amphora storage jar is made out of terracotta and it is eleven inches in height. Then it was painted on with black and brown paint. This jars colors are used to create contrast, the lines are used to unify it, the shapes on the object are the most important part of the image and patterns are used on the jar to help fill the space on the jar. Therefore colors are used to create contrast. There are three different colors on the jar: the natural colorof the terracotta, the brown paintand the black paint. Since terracotta is a neutral color it provides an excellent background for the painting. Black is a very dark color and it makes the people and the designs stick out. People use black paint when they want their design to be important. Brown is a neutral color and it is used to show the not so prominent part of the image. The little bit of brown paint shows the ground the people are standing on. It also unifies the other places where it appears. Looking at the top there is a pattern painted with both the black and brown paint to show contrast. After contrast is seen unity is also seen with lines. Lines are used to unify the artistic image on the Greek storage jar. The thicker the line the more important it is, the thinner the line the less important it is. The lines create objects which then create the entire image. Many different patterns are also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One episode in particular, Homer s Phobia, first aired in 1997, the Simpsons family decide to visit a collectibles shop, where they meet the store dealer, John. The family and John become friendly, leading to Homer wanting to invite him and his wife for dinner next time. However, Marge eventually tells Homer that John is gay; Homer is completely shocked and instantaneously, his attitude and demeanor changes toward John. The hyper irony behind this episode is a reflection of the way American society is portrayed; through the television show, the depiction of homosexuality aids American society to take charge of whom they are as an individual. Carl Matheson, a philosopher, states the following, Furthermore, this process of undercutting runs so deeply that we cannot regard the show as merely cynical; it manages to undercut its cynicism too. The constant process of undercutting is what I mean by hyper ironism (312). I assisted in looking after the kids during their after school program, Kidstop, and my responsibilities ranged from consoling teary eyes to assisting with the reading of a girl attending Spanish immersion school. I genuinely enjoyed cultivating relationships with curious kids from numerous diverse backgrounds. Throughout my volunteering experience, I utilized teaching styles and knowledge gained in Education111 to include diverse learners, create a safe learning environment for everyone, and communicate effectively with students. The first standard effective procedure (SEP) I utilized during my volunteering at Discovery was accommodating diverse learners (SEP 3). This SEP requires educators to recognize the diversity in their classroom and effectively address and include their multiple groups. The sub SEP I used is 3.4H, which states that educators must understand diversity and actively provide connections into the curriculum. To me, this SEP is important because it centers around refusing to be colorblind and ignoring the various backgrounds in a classroom. Growing up in Sartell, this SEP vastly improved my ability to recognize and embrace diversity. Throughout my own education, I was exposed to some economic diversity, but I met few people with a race or ethnicity significantly different than my own. At Discovery, I was ...
