The Role Of Fate In Oedipus And A Job
Meyer Fortes explains the two ways Greeks understood fate or moira in his work on Oedipus and
a Job . Fortes defines fate to its original meaning of lot and portion. He found that the first aspect
was impersonal and focused on the supreme over both gods and men (50). With this Fortes
means that actions are being determined by other things beyond the individual s control like
gods. The impersonal aspect could also be considered as the deterministic view of fate. The
second aspect was individual, being that each person has a particular apportionment of good
and evil. . . which is decided at birth (Fortes 50). Forte means to say that the individual s good
and evil is given to them at birth. Yet, Fortes speaks directly about Oedipus adding that, an
individual s fate is in part determined by the fate of his parents and in turn affects that of his
offspring (50). Here Fortes is trying to say that there were so many different things that took
shape of Oedipus life and that of his offspring s. At the very beginning Oedipus life took shape
because of Laius and Jocasta, first they his life formed but later they tried to take in away
because of an oracle. As Oedipus life continued he would make decisions that would ultimately
lead him to his own demise. Finally the decisions that Oedipus made in his lifetime would
negatively affect his children. Kirkwood Gordon M. Kirkwood believes that there are three types
of oracles, but in his writing, Oracles and Dramaturgy, he only

Bullies Vs Bystanders
Your clothes are ugly. Your hair is in a mess. Gross, you need to shave. The smallest things could
make such a big impact on someone. A lot of people are bullied in different ways like, cyber,
physical, or verbal. Bullies are worse than bystanders because they are the ones who start doing the
damage on someone. For an example, some people have never experienced bullying, and so when
they do they start making the victim s life worse and it may be suicide. Bullies also make the
person feel bad about their self. These were just a couple of things. First of all, bullies are the
worse than bystanders. They are the ones who starts the cruel bullying. Many bullies start bullying
to feel like their in a group so they can connect with other

The Waterway And Wild Trout Fishery
The Motueka is a nationally important waterway and wild trout fishery. The river drains and
area of 2076km2 of mountainous and hilly land that is located about 40 km west of Nelson,
South Island, New Zealand. The catchment elevation ranges from sea level up to around 1600
to 1800 meters. The river rises in the southeast of the catchment and flows north into Tasman
Bay about 116 kilometers. The main stem of the Motueka River rises in the Red Hills and flows
north to the sea. The Motueka River is joined from a succession of small and medium size
tributaries draining hilly land underlain by Moutere gravels and some of much larger tributaries
originating in a complex combination of sedimentary and igneous rocks which form the
mountainous terrain of the Arthur Range on the western boundary of the catchment. The
Motueka Catchment is a large rural. It delivers up to 90% of the freshwater to a large and
productive coastal bay. The whole catchment was originally covered in beech forests and
podcarp. The major productive land uses are content 25% of exotic forest, 35% of native plants,
19% of smaller areas of pastoral grassland, 12% scrub and 7% tussock grasslands and increasing
dairying. More than half of the catchment has been cleared with in exotic, plantation forestry and
few in dryland pasture or cropland. The Motueka River flow generation is controlled by rainfall
distribution and geology. The largest contributors to river flow in the lower Motueka are the west

Market Theory, Capital Asset Pricing Model
Capital market has deep developed this century, more and more investors go into this market.
Which security is better? How to invest? Investors need numeric index to make decision. There
are some theories to help investors: portfolio theory, capital asset pricing model (CAPM), option
pricing model and so on. This essay will explain portfolio theory firstly. Secondly, this essay will
explain CAPM and discuss the importance of the assumptions of CAPM. Thirdly, this essay will
explain arbitrage pricing theory (APT) and factors model. Finally, this essay will compare CAPM
with APT and factors model. Harry Markowitz put forward portfolio theory in 1952; portfolio
theory is that using portfolio diversification to eliminate non systematic risk; portfolio theory uses
mathematical methods Пѓanalysis the relationship between risk (variance) and expect return
(mean) (Brealey, Myers and Allen,2014). Mean variance criterion is very important for Portfolio
theory. The mean is the expect return of portfolio, the formula of expect return for one asset is: E
(r) = ∑_(all states)в
–’гЂ–rГ—y(states)гЂ— r is return; y is the probability of return. Formula of
expect return for portfolio is: E(r) =w_1*E (r_1) + w_2*E (r_2) + ... + w_n*E (r_n) w is the weight
of an asset in the portfolio. The variance represents risk of portfolio, and the formula of portfolio s
variance is: Пѓ^2=E [гЂ–(r ВЇr)гЂ—^2] = ∑_(i,j=1)^nв
–’гЂ–w_1 w_2 Cov(r_1,r_2)гЂ— Cov is

Elizabethan Poor Law Research Paper
Despite previous efforts to provide assistance to the poor, the Elizabethan Poor Law was the first
national policy enacted to do so. This law required parish governments to tax households and
distribute aid to the deserving poor. Those that were considered deserving of aid were people
unable to work due to disability or old age. This corresponds to today s Supplemental Security
Income program. This is also a national, or better currently known as federal, policy that is
designed to provide assistance to people with little income. It, too, determines those that are
deserving of assistance as people who are elderly or who have a disability.

Next, the second hypothesis will be that, the short term return of the bidder firm is insignificant and
negative. Lastly, the long term hypothesis will be that, the abnormal return of the acquiring firm is
negative or negligibly close to zero. Literature review:
Empirical studies examining stock market reaction to M A announcement find little evidence of
wealth creation, with shareholders of the target firms gaining at the expense of the bidder firms. A
merger is said to create value, if the combined value of the bidder or target firm increases on the
announcement of the merger (Houston et al., 2001) (Ghosh Dutta, 2015) (Campa, 2004). Moreover,
the synergistic gains hypothesis of corporate acquisitions underlined by Isa Yap (2004) states that, a
combination of two firms will result in a combined gain that is, more than the sum of the value of
the individual firm. These gains may be attributed to the increasing efficiencies and synergies of the
companies involved.
While some studies show there may be little or no improvements in the post acquisiton operating
performance of merged banks, M As do create value. This is observed by the positive or negative
reactions of stock prices during M A announcements (Isa Yap, 2004) (Campa, 2004) (Drymbetas
Kyriazopoulos, 2014). Most studies find that cumulative abnormal returns occur in the days
following or prior to the announcement date (Andrade et al., 2001).

Michigan University Of Michigan Football Team
The title says it all. The University of Michigan Football Team has been transformed into a
monster from the start of the Harbaugh Era. Before Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach
Michigan suffered a devastating 5 7 season and missed a bowl game under Brady Hoke. The team
is now on the up rise. Even though the statement may offend some, it is true. There are those critics
that firmly disagree because of the big plays the defense sometimes allows, an inexperienced
quarterbackand weak schedule. Despite their few flaws, Michigan has a championship caliber team
capable of monumental wins because of their; prodigious coaching staff, unmatched defensive line,

The staff combines to have an impressive thirty two years of experience in the NFL. (Kenyon
1). Many coaches have also worked with head coach Harbaugh in his past coaching gigs, which
includes his own son. Michigan has a plethora of notable names to their coaches roster. Names
like Jedd Fisch, Tyrone Wheatley, Jay Harbaugh, Michael Zordich, Brian Smith and new coach
Don Brown to name a few. Brown coached the number one defense in the nation last year at
Boston College. He along with the other remarkable coaches has put together a defense that is
unmatched anywhere in the nation. The Michigan defense so far this year has been nothing short
of superb. In their first six games, the defense only allowed two rushing touchdowns and less than
one hundred total rushing yards a game. (Brouwer 1). Outstanding. As sports reviewer Chris
Peterson proclaims in his review for gbmwolevrine.com, [...] when you dive deep into the numbers,
[it is] hard not to call Michigan football s defense the best in the country (3). With their great plays
on defense frustrating opposing offenses game after game, Michigan has definitely rebuilt their
defense. The defense is one of the main reasons why the team is national championship worthy.
Another area that the team is working on is developing their fresh quarterback. Junior Wilton
Speight leads Michigan s offense this year, taking over the quarterback position for Jake Rudock.

Essay On Terrorist Violence
Despite the struggle to bring about a resolution to the conflict during the 1970s and 80s, terrorist
violence continued to be a problem into the early 90s, and British troops remained in full force.
In 1981, ten IRA prison hunger strikers starved to death after they used hunger strikes to protest
against losing their special category status and against wearing prison uniforms. This democratic
success persuaded Republicans of the benefits of politics instead of violence as a way of getting
what they wanted. In 1985 British and Irish prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Garrett
Fitzgerald signed the Anglo Irish Agreement. This recognised the Republic of Ireland s right to
have an advice giving role in the affairs of Northern Ireland.

The government in Northern Ireland is made up of all the main political parties according to their

political foes: the loyalist Democratic Unionist Party and the republican Sinn FГ©in Party (Law,

In April 2002 weapons inspectors were satisfied that a substantial amount of IRA arms was safely
stored and could not be used without detection. By 2005 the IRA had renounced clearly the use of

Theories Of Durkheim
Г‰mile Durkheim is widely considered to be one of the founders of the science of sociology.
Towards the end of his book, The Rules of Sociological Method, he writes that a science cannot be
considered definitively constituted until it has succeeded in establishing its own independent status
(150), a statement that strongly suggests that with this work Durkheim is trying to definitively
constitute[] (150) sociologyas a science. Contrary to this sentiment, Durkheim appears to rely on
already established sciences and scientific methods. Though he is definitely founding something
new, Durkheim fundamentally relies on the methods of traditional science to give sociology
credibility within the scientific community and beyond. One of the most obvious way Durkheim
does this is through his use of heightened and scientific language. He describes sociological
principles as being empirical postulate[s], the product[s] of a legitimate induction (Durkheim 149),
and claims that one of the key characteristics of sociology is that it... Show more content on

In showing the similarities between the two sciences Durkheim necessarily implies that sociology
is as legitimate of a science as biology. In Chapter III, Rules for the Distinction of the Normal
from the Pathological (144) Durkheim focusses on establishing the differences between what is
normal and what is pathological in sociology by discussing how health and sickness are determined
within the biological sphere. Every sociological phenomenon, just as every biological phenomenon,
although staying essentially unchanged, can assume a different form for each particular case (147),
therefor making every sociological phenomenon as real and as scientific as every biological
phenomenon. This comparison also serves to separate sociology from philosophy, a distinction
which Durkheim considers to be the first characteristic[] of the sociological method

Movie Review of Stigmata
I m not a big movie watcher, in fact when I watch a movie, I rarely finish it. However, there are
just a few that I ve got to see. These usually include comedy, but more often mystery. About two
years ago I saw a preview for the movie Stigmata. Before the previews I had never heard of stigmata
, and even after this didn t know what it was. My cousin explained what stigmata were to me, and
then I wanted to see the movie. Stigmata are defined as the plural of stigma; marks resembling the
wounds of the crucified body of Christ, said to be supernaturally impressed on the bodies of cetain

were many sites that had the exact same information under different titles. There were even a few
that were described as stigmata defined, and were literaly the definition of stigmata but nothing

it is uncertain if stigmata is psychosmatic or if it is Divine Intervention, and the authenticity of
many cases of stigmata are questioned. Several different web sites state St. Francis of Assissi is

Fanny Taylor s False Claim in Rosewood Report and Film
January of 1923 became one of the most horrific times in U.S. history and for hundreds of
African Americans, when a white women named Fanny Taylor falsely claimed that she had
been beaten at the hands of a black man. Outraged at these alleged allegations, white men of
rosewood would parade the town in search for the person responsible. According to the
rosewood report these angered mobs had killed about eight blacks including Sam Carter who
supposedly knew where the acclaimed suspect was headed. There were numerous reports of the
massacre from newspapers, citizens, and later the survivors of the rosewood events. Many if
not all would offer there bias opinion as to what happen in the events of Rosewood, It was said
in the report that Most major Florida and Southern white newspapers ran the AP stories but did
not editorialize. They expressed alarm at the extent of racial violence, but generally said it
resulted from an attack on Fannie Taylor and blamed the subsequent deaths on the action of black
residents (Rosewood report, p.28) Many of these newspapers in the south and some in the north
would try to justify the violence of the massacre, some like the Tampa Morning Tribune stating
that it was the abuse of a defenseless white women that stirred up the white men to cause the
violence they did. It was also said in the report that African American newspapers Condemned the
entire episode. (Rosewood report p.2) In 1997, almost 74 years after the Rosewood events, John

The background of Japanese Monetary policy in Bubble economy period
As Walsh (2003) said that, a social loss function dependent on inflationand output gap is the
appropriate objective of monetary policy which indicates that the level of inflation and output are
the major factors that affect monetary policy of all countries. Moreover, Castelnuovo and Surico
(2010) claimed that inflation are the key elements to decided a monetary policy for a county. For
the Japan economy, it experienced a disaster during the period 1986 1991, which named Japanese
asset price bubble (Wood, Christopher, 2005). It leaded a long term economic depression japan after
that. The main reason for the bubble economy is the extremely high inflation rate and output. As

The Hero Of Odysseus As An Epic Hero
Even Odysseus Bought Bitcoin: As Ricky Martin once said, Amongst the qualities a hero should
have, I would include determination, loyalty, courage, perseverance, patience, focus, intrepidity
and selflessness . According to dictionary.com, an Epic Hero is a brave and noble character in an
epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. In the epic poem The
Odysseyby Homer, the protagonist Odysseus displays the characteristics of an epic hero
throughout his entire journey home after battling bravely at the war in Troy. No matter how
daunting the challenge, Odysseus demonstrates heroic qualities as the god like person he is.
Odysseus leadership and loyalty allow he and his men to escape deadly fates, while his ability to
be adventurous and brave helps him to face foes along the way, and finally, his witty intelligence
in every situation truly characterize him as the ideal epic hero. Odysseus s faith and guidance
towards his men are what accurately characterize his as an epic hero. For instance, when they

(Book 12, 193). Odysseus proves his skillful leadership by protected his men from the siren s

Guatemala is home to a centuries old weaving tradition through which indigenous women assert a
sense of belongingness to family and community. The women and their families are descendants
of the ancient Maya Indians, and the tools of their trade are cotton yarn, the backstrap loom, and
time proven patterns and techniques. Each village and region is identifiable for its own weaving
design and colors. Techniques and designs are passed from mother to daughter and traditional
clothes are still preferred by most. Some believe that the different patterns existed before the
Spaniards arrived. Others believe they were brought from Europe. It is known that the
conquistadors used the clothing to label people and control the populations. The traditional
technique was to wrap the threads on a warping board, and then mount them on back strap loom
where a panel was woven. Panels were decorated with brocade designs depending on the textile
tradition of the weaver s community as well as her personal taste and skills. Finally, the woven
panels were sewn together to make a garment (Guatemalan Culture).

economics for years to come. To explain the first part of the back on how the rivals between clubs
and human beings is explained in the chapter How Soccer Explains the World The Pornography of
Sect. One of the biggest rivals in European soccer history is the Glasgow Ranger versus Glasgow
Celtics. For example when the Glasgow Rangers wear their orange jerseys which were showing
the color of Protestantism walking into their stadium during game day, they sing vulgar and
racist chants and getting into brawls outnumbering the Glasgow Celtic supports by 37, 000. A
chant you might hear is If you hate the f***in Fenians clap your hands (Foer 35) shows the great
hatred between the Protestants (Rangers) versus Catholics (Celtics) still going on today. This
was no who had more championships rivalry but the ancient history of the Glasgow Club. The
hatred of the Protestant to the Catholics is horrible and vice versa. For all capitalist goals,
however, Rangers don t try too hard to discourage religious bigotry. They continue to hawk orange
jerseys. They play songs on the loudspeakers that they know will provoke anti Catholic lyrics:
Tina Turner s Simply the Best culminates 40,000 screams of F*** the pope! (Foer 39) Of course,

Assess The Importance Of Caring In Nursing
The most compelling reason that one cares for another is that the other is a human being worthy of
dignity and respect (Fealy, 1995). Seeing the person behind the patient demonstrates a powerful
acceptance and a nurse s attempts to confirm a patient s dignity, as well as supports the idea that
those in their care are intrinsically valuable as human beings (Halldorsdottir Hamrin, 1997).This
concern about how a patient views the world is fundamental to caring and when a nurse
acknowledges a patients inherent value and feelings, the patient is helped or cared for on the
patient s own terms. It advocate a view of the whole person the goes beyond their physical or
biomedical care, and instead takes a mind body spirit emotion environment approach

Battle Of Chancellorsville Essay
The rather grave period from 1861 1865 was known as the Civil War. The Civil War stands as an
American phenomenon and important significance to the history of our country (qtd. in Stout,
Baptism in Blood ). One of the bloodiest and most notorious battles occurred in 1863, and was
known as the Battle of Chancellorsville. The battle was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863, and
was considered one of the Confederacy s greatest victories as well as, arguably, the best victory for
General Robert E. Lee. Another significance of this battle is the death of the famous Stonewall
Jackson, which devastated Lee. This essay will explain the events that happened during the 1863
Battle of Chancellorsville.
During the winter of 1862 1863, the Army of the Potomac was dismayed and in disarray after the
brutal and crushing defeat of the Union at the Battle of Fredericksburg (Krick 197). There were
many doubts from officers and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite Hooker s earlier claims that he had the finest army on the planet, they suffered more
than 17,000 casualties, while Lee s army suffered approximately 13,000 ( Battlefields of the
Civil War ). Lee and Jackson were able to defy the low odds and eventually come out on top. As
aforementioned, the battle of Chancellorsville was arguably Lee s greatest victory, despite a
nearly two to one ratio. Despite this, he was also devastated by the death of Jackson (
Battlefields of the Civil War ), his best friend, who had died from pneumonia after being injured.
Some have said that Hooker s downfall began right after the battle. During the Gettysburg
campaign, he was relieved from his command and fought the rest of the war by the orders of
General William Tecumseh Sherman ( Battlefields of the Civil War ). He died in 1879 due to,
rumors have put it, his own injuries during Chancellorsville. This battle helped to prove that,
despite all odds, it is possible to come out on

Aesthetic Disinterestedness Analysis
Jameson Hoffman HON 3310 Dr. Hayan Charara November 17, 2017 Disinterestedness and
Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness
Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the
virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners
and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the
perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133).
While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being
disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of
objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea,
goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must
admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not
a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a
Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an
interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely
incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher
exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free
beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of
the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty
of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general
concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty
(15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own
ideas and wishes onto it or become swayed by the physical pleasure that accompanies it (15). A
functional object which is good for the thing itself in accordance with its purpose, however, is a
hindrance to the the

Why Did The Comanche Tribes Gain Their Power
The Comanche were one of the most powerful Indian tribes that America has ever seen. They
stopped the Spanish from expanding to the north and farther into America. However they weren t
always that way. S.W. Gwynne compared them to a young, bullied boy who grew into a strong,
vengeful man. There were quite a few different factors that made the Comanche evolve into this
powerhouse in the west. The Comanche were able to hold this power for some time, that is, until
things took a turn for the worse, and they were forced to surrender and their power was gone.
Before exploring how the Comanche gained their power, one must look into the history of the
Comanche tribe. The word comes from a Ute word meaning anyone who wants to fight me all the
time. The Comanche were originally part of the Shoshone group, but 10,000 members left after they
were introduced to horses. They moved to the Texasand Oklahoma region. They chose that land
specifically for the buffalo population. This land they settled in was called Comancheria. Part of
that land included the Llano Estacado, a plateau in Texas and New... Show more content on

One of the most well known uses of the Comanche power is raiding. Over the time of their
power, there is an estimation of 20,000 captives taken by the Comanche tribes. The Comanche
had a process when it came to their raids. Adult males and newborns to the age of two would be
killed. Children from the age of three to ten would be taken as captives. Women would normally
be raped and sometimes killed. Once the Comanche realized they had low fertility rates, they
started to take the women as captives in order to raise their populations. The captives were also
used as slaves to take care of the livestock. The Comanche would do horrendous things to their
captives and those they were raiding. Examples are torture, gang rape, scalping,

Essay about Josephine Baker
Josephine Baker
While Jim Crow laws were reeking havoc on the lives of African Americans in the South, a
massed exodus of Southern musicians, particularly from New Orleans, spread the seeds of Jazz as
far north as New York City. A new genre of music produced fissures in the walls of racial
discrimination thought to be impenetrable. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington,
King Oliver and Fletcher Henderson performed to the first desegregated audiences. Duke Ellington
starred in the first primetime radio program to feature an African American artist. And a quirky little
girl from Missouri conquered an entire country enthralled by her dark skin, curvaceous body and
dynamic personality. Josephine Baker was more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While still in elementary school, she began dancing part time in a local chorus line. She left home at
the age of 13; waiting tables most of the time and working on stage whenever possible. She
joined a group of street musicians who called themselves the Jones Family Band. The work with
the Band paid off when Baker acquired her first stage appearance at the Booker T. Washington
Theater, St. Louis s black vaudeville house. Also appearing was the all black dance troupe, the
Dixie Steppers. The manager of the Dixie Steppers took a liking to Baker and decided to make
her part of the group. Since he couldn t find anything for her to do onstage, she became a dresser,
principally for the troupe s star, Clara Baker. # By 1920, she was married, divorced and married
again the second time to Willie Baker, a Pullman porter, from whom Baker took the name she
used on stage. In April 1921, while the Dixie Steppers were touring in Philadelphia, one of the
chorus girls hurt herself. For nearly a year, Ms. Baker had been studying the choreography of the
show and practicing the steps behind the scenes. Another dancer was aware of Baker s abilities
and suggested she fill in for the injured chorus girl. Ms. Baker took her place in the chorus line.
Because she was much more lively and animated, she stood out from the rest of the ladies, which,
obviously, is not the point of a chorus line. When the lyricist/composer team of Nobel Sissle

Communication, The Exchange Of Nonverbal And Interpersonal...
Think Piece #1
To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages
between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that interpersonal communication is inevitable,
irreversible, and unrepeatable due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for
us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal
communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand:
your culture, the other person s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things
you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and
intercultural relationships.
The first point in my theory is that you can better your skills as an interpersonal communicator by
better understanding your own culture. DeVito states that there are. several major cultural
distinctions that are crucial for more effective communication they are: individualism or
collectivism, high or low context, high or low power distance, masculinity or femininity, high or
low ambiguity tolerance, long or short term orientation, and indulgent or (p. 34). To be able to
understand your or anyone else s culture you must be able to understand the ways that these things
affect communication. Once you understand the ways that you are oriented in these seven
categories due to enculturation you can understand how you communicate and become a more

Gender And Kinship Roles In Society
Reflecting upon gender and kinship roles in contemporary United States of America society:
Gender roles are deeply engrained within society, therefore it is no surprise that they would reflect
through into the care work employed in organ transplantations. Within society one is culturally
groomed to reflect a gender role, a person ultimately becomes a cultural construct of what is
believed to be their set genderidentity. The creation of gender roles dates back to the European
approach to setting up an economic unit that was a household (Stone 2009). Due to the way
society was structured with males being the recipient of inheritance, he therefore bought more
economic recourses to the marriage than the woman. A woman could bring a dowry but
because of the structure of society it was the only financial contribution she could contribute to
the relationship as she was not allowed to work. Men tended to marry older as it gave them
more time to amass their wealth. They then tended to take a younger bride because she was
more likely to be fertile and thusly continuing the family line (Stone, 2009). Social class also
played a role in the persistent gender roles that exist within the contemporary United States of
America. In the past female virginity was prized therefore to guard her virginity families would
sequester her away in the home as a method of protection. There in itself created a double standard
as males could have premarital sex. It further asserted the male dominance of being allowed to
participate in society. The sociopolitical dimension of marriage relegate the woman to offset her
lack of financial contribution due to her inability to participate in society by performing the
household task, thusly proving herself valuable in a marriage. These values that have spanned time
have been embodied by the American people and are reflect into Laura Heinemann s work on organ
transplantation kinshipand care networks in the form of gendered care.
Heinemann s critical engagement as aforementioned with embodiment was not strong. However
she did highlight with her extensive fieldwork the embodiment of the set gender roles within the
domestic sphere. The image she painted of contemporary America illustrated women

not become a part of the cultural world sets him apart from the average man. In the end when he
realizes that he does not need to shut himself off anymore and that the cultural world will not hurt
him, he finally finds the freedom and the words to release all the emotions and thoughts inside of
him. It is then the reader sees that Ralph is a glorious, wonderfully emotional man capable of
feeling. It is his words that give inspiration and hope to Indiana and saves them both from
committing suicide. Sir Ralph began as a man destined to be emotionless and isolated and by the

The Romantic spirit was one that stressed the inherent goodness of humans and individualism
outside of society at this time. They believed that man, through human nature is good and well
behaved, but society and so called civilization is what disrupts the minds and emotions of people.
The Romantics were mostly in response to the Enlightenment movement and their emphasis of
reason over emotion. To a Romantic, if man is inherently sinful, reason restrains his passions, but if
he is naturally good, then in the proper environment, his emotions can be trusted. This gives
credibility to the idea of individualism and the flourishing of human emotions and needs. They

The Mexican Revolution of 1910 set many influences in motion shaping the course of Mexican
history between 1920 up into the 2000s. There are several patterns that take its cue from the

Mexican Revolution is an extremely long and complicated subject to perceive without much

Cultural Dislocation and the Sense of Loss: A Study of Ashima s Predicament in The Namesake
Abstract
Due to increasing urbanization, dislocation and migration, a person s identity is caught up in many
contradictions. While trying to locate oneself in between their root and their new existence, the
sense of belonging to a particular place often gets blurred. Modern and postmodern fiction bears a
true reflection of this universal human condition in the present world. With the diasporic writers
these issues find the most powerful, striking and convincing expression. Narrating the story of a
Hindu middle class Bengali couple that settles in the US, Jhumpa Lahiri s The Namesake depicts the

She chronicles dislocation and its resulting sense of loss in a strikingly powerful manner. She
blends the two cultures and creates inner turmoil for many of her characters who struggle to
balance the Western and Indian influence. To sum up, one must acknowledge that the story
beautifully portrays the postmodern predicament in the multicultural juncture. Ashima s sense of
loss and trauma, the vacuum in her heart, speaks of the universal fate of an immigrant life. Though
not easily acceptable, this painful experience is an inextricable part in expatriate life.

Hollow Face Impression Analysis
The hollow face illusion is an illusion produced by ambiguity of visual depth processing
(Gregory 1970). It occurs when a concave, hollow mask is perceived as a convex face i.e. with
facial features protruding towards the observer (Hill and Johnston, 2007). Hill and Bruce (1993)
propose that the illusion is a result of the contradictory information received from depth cues.
Contrary to this, Hill and Johnston (2007) assert that this is not the case. Rather, they emphasise
alternative explanations such as the familiarity of faces and a general inclination towards convexity.
A number of studies support these assertions, and moreover provide evidence that suggests a
number of factors are critical in creating the illusion. Primarily, these include motion, shading, and
orientation. (Marr, 1982; Gregory, 1973; Hill and Bruce, 1993; Georgeson, 1979).... Show more

Our brain receives input that is processed by the visual system in order to create perception. This is
referred to as bottom up processing, as the information travels through a hierarchy of structures
ranging from early cortical areas to higher functioning systems (Oram and Perret, 1994). In
contrast, our brain often makes inferences about what we perceive, as a function of top down
processing (Cauller, 1995). In the case of the hollow face illusion, our brain knows what we are
observing is a face, and that faces are typically associated with convex objects (Gregory, 1973).

A murky fog wrapped itself around Shukov and made him cough painfully. The temperature out
there was 17. Shukov s temperature was +99 (Solzhenitsyn 23). Illness is inevitable in the
despairing weather conditions and lack of proper health care. The men begin to lose hope in living,
and neglect their assigned tasks. Man vs. nature conflict signifies the recurring weather conditions
the men battle through. This conflicting aspect has the most impactful effect on the Zeks because
the cold temperatures and frozen precipitation weaken them, increasingly by the hour. Weather
clashes with them at all times because they are not given proper shelter. The conditions in the
bunks are near what it is like out in the elements, therefore they do not have a place to return for
their bodies to recover and gain heat. Because the men are not able to cope in the freezing weather,
their bodies begin to shut down. The repeated exposure increasingly weakens and kills off many of
the Zeks. Therefore, the most prominent form of conflict is through man vs. nature, which creates

Queer History In America Chapter 1 Summary
America has a long and complicated history, some of which has been forgotten or almost hidden
away until recently, specifically LGBT history. The history of LGBTQIA+ people as a whole is
something that has only been written about since the 1970s. Considering the fact that queer people
have been around for much longer than that, their history is still not as developed as it should be.
Michael Bronski, a cultural critic, independent scholar, progressive activist, and college professor,
has been writing extensively on LGBTissues for four decades and has accumulated his knowledge
into A Queer History of the United States. Publishing this queer history , his goal is to educated
those who are willing to listen on the buried and forgotten LGBTQIA+... Show more content on

She wrote Out in the Union: A Labor History of Queer America in order to expose the
LGBTQIA+ issues in the labor union. It provides insight on the struggles that Americans had to
face with a different kind of hiring discrimination. Using stories of those who faced their own
battles in the labor union, Frank tries to fill a large gap in history. Starting around the 1970s, she
first discusses those who are coming out in unionized workplaces and follows both queer and
straight advocates for gay rights in their fight against harassment in the workplaces and union
halls. Many LGBTQIA+ people have come out in the union to make their place in labor s
campaign for economic justice. They made a part of their identity public in order to fight for the
equal rights they deserve. The battle for equal rights of transgender workers is also mentioned,
their first affirmation in labor agreements being in the 1980s. Miriam moves on to sharing what
she found out about the alliances that were formed between organizers in queer communities and
labor activists to prioritize gay labor issues. Gay labor campaigns began popping up everywhere,
and Miriam wraps up her review of history with the mention of the passage of the Marriage
Equality Act in the State of New York in June

The Positive and Negative Effects of Mongol Practice and...
Ruta Malsky 11 26 11 Pd 6 The Positive and Negative effects of Mongol Practice and Belief The
Mongol empire was the world s largest empire. The Mongol s practices and beliefs had both
positive and negative effects. The large Mongolian empire promoted communication and diversity;
however, despite this positive effect, the Mongolian empire housed the deaths of many innocent
people. In addition to this, the Mongol empire fostered various religions, but enforced the same
practices on everyone, no matter what religion they may follow; this brought order amongst the
Mongolian empire. The Mongolian empire was, and still is to this day, the largest empire known to

After the Mongols would sack a city, they would drive out the city s citizens and chop off their
heads, and after the heads were they would sort the heads into piles: one for men, one for
women, and then one for children (Doc 4). In some cases they even buried people alive upside
down (Doc 5)! However, this document, document 5, may be biased. This document came from
a Persian manuscript, so the Persians could have over exaggerated the strictness of the Mongols
and portrayed them as wicked people. It is very possible that the Persians could have does this
especially if they despised the Mongols for taking over their land. Very few people survived, if
any were to have survived, then the survivors were most likely artisans or slaves, since the
Mongols sought them out before they began to murder the city s inhabitants with an axe (Doc
3). However, inhabitants of cities were not the only ones who suffered assassination; soldiers of
the Mongolian army suffered manslaughter as well. In the Mongolian army there was a captain
who oversaw ten soldiers, then there was a captain supervised one hundred soldiers, and so on
(Doc.2). If a few men out of a group of ten were to run away, then all of the ten men would be put
to death (Doc 2). Same applies to men in a group of one hundred; if ten men were to flee from a
group of one hundred, then every man, from that group of one hundred men, would be

The Origin Of The Banshee
Connor Harkins
Jonathan Tyler
English 102 10
1 February 2017
The Banshee The banshee is a phantom that is said to wail whenever a person is about to die. It
would visit a friend or a family member of a Irish person who was dying. People are afraid of
them because it shows us our mortality. We are afraid of death because we do not know what is
on the other side, so naturally we would be afraid of the harbinger of death. The origin of the
banshee is intertwined with death as it is in its spectre form. There are many legends that the
banshee came from. It ranges from women who took alcohol to mourn the death a member of a
powerful family to ancient goddesses that the Christian church turned into a demon. No matter what

The banshee is said to be a woman that were paid with alcohol to mourn the death of a person.
The family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a
their deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did
not like this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are
being punished for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place
unlike many ghosts. The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life
of mourning for the family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more
supernatural myth to it.
In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing
that it is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known
as the Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De
Danann, the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from
Greece (some say, of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which
hid the sun and their appearance for three days and nights... (White 18). This supports the idea of
the church that the banshee is a demon, because it is the descendant of a Pagan goddess. Women
are that to be bringers of life because they give birth to children. So the tale of the banshee being the

Albigence Waldo Essay
There comes a soldier, his bare feet are seen thro his worn out shoes, his legs nearly naked from
the tatter d remains of an only pair of stockings... (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) Dr. Waldo was
one of the thousands of soldiers barely scraping themselves through this mess. Sick soldiers, small
huts, poor ventilation, and vomiting. These are only some of the poor conditions at the American
Revolution winter camp known as Valley Forge. In the winter of 1777, soldiers were living under
ruthless predicaments with a 10% probability of death. Smallpox was spreading fast and many
would never see their family again. Washington s position as a general was being doubted by
members of congress, instead assuming that his leadership efforts will lead the Americans to
retreat. A soldierin the Continental Congress should leave, because of the rapid increase of death

describes the terrible food, the sickness, the ripped clothes, and the terrible environment.
Furthermore, Dr. Albigence Waldo records, Heartily wish myself at home, my skin and eyes are

Essay Risk Management Issue
Risk management is the most important part of any organization to face the risks that might arise
when a new project started. It should be a first concern when the decision is being made. Risk
management is the practice of looking at the exposure to risk and deciding how to best handle that
exposure. The idea behind riskmanagement is to decide if the benefit outweighs the risk. This
process will help you to identify risks that might normally be overlooked so when things come up,
they do not surprise you by having a plan in place on how to solve them.
Risk management would help to identify and then manage threats that could severely impact or
bring down the organization. This could be done by reviewing operations of the organization, ...

They are: perimeters and access controls to protect residents from the outside world, internal
security to protect residents from threats within the facility, measures to protect residents who
cannot protect themselves or are a danger to themselves, and measures to protect caregivers and
loved ones.
LTC facility could protect residents from the dangers of the outside world by having adequate
controls securing the perimeter and managing access to buildings and grounds. It is important to
find out geographical risks and area s crime trends. The grounds assessment should include existing
lighting, fencing, landscaping, and natural surveillance. LTC could also protect their residents by
using interior patrols, front desk management, sing in, and badging.
Elements to consider when assessing threats within LTC environment include current employee
recruitment processes, screening, and background checks, and supervision of employees. The
demand for entry level resident care and custodial workers is high. Staff turnover in these jobs is
also high, and some organizations have chosen to reduce costs by cutting back on references checks
that provide vitally important information about potential employees. These organizations could be
under negative publicity when incidents or accidents occur.
Another concern is the treat that residents may pose to one another. This issue could be addressed
by patient background screening program similar to employee preemployment screening.

Gotham City is one of the most well known cities to DC comic book readers and to any super

alter ego the Batman. His mission is to rid the many criminals that preside over Gotham and to
bring these tyrants to justice. As he says in the Dark Knight film, I m going to show the people of
Gotham that the city doesn t belong to the criminals and the corrupt. In one scene, Wayne speaks

lower class society standards. The Joker s goal is to force the citizens of Gotham down to his

The current economic situation is terrible. In 2011, blacks made 66 cents for every dollar earned
by whites, compared to 55 cents for every dollar earned by whites in 1963. How do Black
Americans break the poverty cycle? What caused this? One suggestion says that under resourced
schools and mass incarceration drives this cycle. Both must be eradicated, neither is adequate in
itself. Schools in poor neighborhoods most of the time are inadequate to handle the mission of
educating the youth. On the other hand, a black student in a suburban school is six times more
likely to graduate on time and be college ready than a black student in a segregated urban school.
Five times as many Whites are using drugs as African Americans, yet African Americans are sent
to prison for drug offenses at 10 times the rate of Whites. This is due to unfair drug laws, over
policing and prosecutions in black neighborhoods and overenthusiastic district attorneys. If
America can find a way to improve educational attainment for black males and eliminate disparate
rates of incarceration for drug offences would begin to break the poverty cycle. The main

The Influence Of Gothic Elements In Tim Burton s Movies
Tim burton is very good at using color to establish a mood. As seen in many of his hit movies,
color is a large part. Tim burton uses certain cinematic techniques such as color symbolism. For
example, in Alice in Wonderland , you can see that Tim burton purposefully makes queen
Iracebeth s castle dark and red to show that she is angry or even dangerous while Tim Burton
makes Mirana of Marmoreal s castle white to show tranquil and goodness. Even the small things
matter to Tim Burton. All colors are specially chosen because it would change the whole movie if
he changed a white castle to a black castle. This technique can also be found in Charlie and the
Chocolate Factoryin the scene when they are riding on the boat down the chocolate river.... Show

Gothic elements such as castles, or ancient prophecies are used all throughout his movies. If you
asked many people would say this is the factor that tells them that a movie was directed by Tim
Burton. Throughout all of his movies there are always one or two gothic elements included. For
example, in Edward Scissorhands , you can find two gothic elements. Setting in a castle and
inexplicable events. Edward Scissorhands is found in a dark, supposably haunted castle when
peg finds him in a dark corner. If Edward was found in the middle of the desert it wouldn t be
intense. The explicable event is that Edward was converted to a normal human but he was a robot
and he has scissors for hands. Tim Burton makes these gothic elements very obvious so it can
change the tone of the movie from happy to creepy. Tim burton also uses gothic elements in Alice
in Wonderland . Again, he uses a castle as the setting for most of the movie but also adds an
ancient prophecy. The castle is used to show the scary queen and the ancient prophecy is used to
depict what will happen throughout the rest of time. Tim Burton likes to use these to change the
mood very quick, which is one reason why Tim burton loves using this

who won the cover contest. When I saw the winning cover, I became discouraged. It was much
better than anything I could draw. I thought I wouldn t have a chance in next year s contest. I
continued on in the fair, wondering at what would happened if I entered next year. In May of 2017,
I gained my enthusiasm back. This time, I became determined to win the cover contest. More

Analyse Two or Three of Heaney s Poems to Show How Common...
Heaney s first anthology Death of a Naturalist is the best source for poems that show how common
and often mundane things are described in beautiful language and rediscovered as meaningful
activities. Digging , Blackberry Picking and Personal Helicon are prime examples of Kavanagh s
words.
When reading the name of the poem Digging , it seems like it will be about nothing at all.
Digging is a basic and ordinary activity and the reader does not expect anything meaningful when
reading the poem. This is deceptive, because the first two lines present readers with a sense of
choice. Heaney immediately makes them aware of the deeper issue of the subject he is about to
explore and therefore creates an alertness in them.
Heaney labels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He digs with such intensity that he rests only to drink a bottle of milk before returning to his task.
The grandfather s professionalism is contrasted to Heaney s clumsiness, because he brings his
grandfather a bottle of milk corked sloppily with paper (20).
It is clear that the seventh stanza is no longer about digging. It is about something far more
significant. Heaney remembers the act of digging and it is no longer poetic. He describes the
smell of potato mould as cold (25) and the sounds are no longer clean and precise. This sudden
reality of the messiness of digging implies that Heaney is no longer referring to the activity, but
rather is returning to the violence of the first stanza. The choice he gives is the pen or the gun and
in the last line of the seventh stanza Heaney states that he has no spade to follow men like (28) his
father and grandfather.
Ultimately. Heaney chooses the pen over the gun and therefore poetry over violence. The last stanza
shows that Heaney has faith in his poetry to make a difference. He believes that it can solve
problems that can not be resolved with a gun.
Digging is not a poem about an ordinary and simple activity, but rather a metaphor of choice
between poetry and violence. Blackberry Picking is similar in its function, but broaches a different
subject.
Again the heading names a simple and ordinary

Beginning to the Great Alaskan Race
In 1925 a diphtheria epidemic broke out in the small Alaskan town of Nome. With the town at
the risk of death they urgently needed an antiserum. So twenty dogs sled teams relayed the
serum from the town of Nenana to Nome. The hardships of the dogs and mushers went through
along with the hero dogs, and teams of mushers and dogs will forever be alive in Alaskan
history. This journey is a gratifying accomplishment and a proud moment in Alaskan history.
There were twenty teams of dogs varying from seven dogs to twenty three dogs with a total of
over a hundred dogs running from town to town carrying a life saving serum to the people of
Nome. These teams of dogs carried the antiserum from Nenana to Nome. William Shannon picked
up the serum in Nenana from the steam train that had brought it from Anchorage. As the first team
to handle the serum they took off with a fast start. The lead dog Blackie guided the team fifty two
miles from Nenana to Tolovana. They serum was passed from musher to musher until Edgar
Kalland picked the serum up in Nine Mile he was the seventh musher to have the serum. He took
the serum to Kokrines through temperatures of forty four degrees below zero. Another musher that
handled the serum through harsh conditions was, Charlie Evans. He took the serum thirty miles
from Bishop Mountain to Nulato. It was negative sixty four degrees on the trail when he had the

  • 2. The Role Of Fate In Oedipus And A Job Meyer Fortes explains the two ways Greeks understood fate or moira in his work on Oedipus and a Job . Fortes defines fate to its original meaning of lot and portion. He found that the first aspect was impersonal and focused on the supreme over both gods and men (50). With this Fortes means that actions are being determined by other things beyond the individual s control like gods. The impersonal aspect could also be considered as the deterministic view of fate. The second aspect was individual, being that each person has a particular apportionment of good and evil. . . which is decided at birth (Fortes 50). Forte means to say that the individual s good and evil is given to them at birth. Yet, Fortes speaks directly about Oedipus adding that, an individual s fate is in part determined by the fate of his parents and in turn affects that of his offspring (50). Here Fortes is trying to say that there were so many different things that took shape of Oedipus life and that of his offspring s. At the very beginning Oedipus life took shape because of Laius and Jocasta, first they his life formed but later they tried to take in away because of an oracle. As Oedipus life continued he would make decisions that would ultimately lead him to his own demise. Finally the decisions that Oedipus made in his lifetime would negatively affect his children. Kirkwood Gordon M. Kirkwood believes that there are three types of oracles, but in his writing, Oracles and Dramaturgy, he only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A lot of people are bullied in different ways like, cyber, physical, or verbal. Bullies are worse than bystanders because they are the ones who start doing the damage on someone. For an example, some people have never experienced bullying, and so when they do they start making the victim s life worse and it may be suicide. Bullies also make the person feel bad about their self. These were just a couple of things. First of all, bullies are the worse than bystanders. They are the ones who starts the cruel bullying. • 4. The Waterway And Wild Trout Fishery The Motueka is a nationally important waterway and wild trout fishery. The river drains and area of 2076km2 of mountainous and hilly land that is located about 40 km west of Nelson, South Island, New Zealand. The catchment elevation ranges from sea level up to around 1600 to 1800 meters. The river rises in the southeast of the catchment and flows north into Tasman Bay about 116 kilometers. The main stem of the Motueka River rises in the Red Hills and flows north to the sea. The Motueka River is joined from a succession of small and medium size tributaries draining hilly land underlain by Moutere gravels and some of much larger tributaries originating in a complex combination of sedimentary and igneous rocks which form the mountainous terrain of the Arthur Range on the western boundary of the catchment. The Motueka Catchment is a large rural. It delivers up to 90% of the freshwater to a large and productive coastal bay. The whole catchment was originally covered in beech forests and podcarp. The major productive land uses are content 25% of exotic forest, 35% of native plants, 19% of smaller areas of pastoral grassland, 12% scrub and 7% tussock grasslands and increasing dairying. More than half of the catchment has been cleared with in exotic, plantation forestry and few in dryland pasture or cropland. This essay will explain portfolio theory firstly. Secondly, this essay will explain CAPM and discuss the importance of the assumptions of CAPM. Thirdly, this essay will explain arbitrage pricing theory (APT) and factors model. Finally, this essay will compare CAPM with APT and factors model. Harry Markowitz put forward portfolio theory in 1952; portfolio theory is that using portfolio diversification to eliminate non systematic risk; portfolio theory uses mathematical methods Пѓanalysis the relationship between risk (variance) and expect return (mean) (Brealey, Myers and Allen,2014). Mean variance criterion is very important for Portfolio theory. The mean is the expect return of portfolio, the formula of expect return for one asset is: E (r) = ∑_(all states)в –’гЂ–rГ—y(states)гЂ— r is return; y is the probability of return. Formula of expect return for portfolio is: E(r) =w_1*E (r_1) + w_2*E (r_2) + ... + w_n*E (r_n) w is the weight of an asset in the portfolio. The variance represents risk of portfolio, and the formula of portfolio s variance is: Пѓ^2=E [гЂ–(r ВЇr)гЂ—^2] = ∑_(i,j=1)^nв –’гЂ–w_1 w_2 Cov(r_1,r_2)гЂ— Cov is the covariance. • 6. Elizabethan Poor Law Research Paper Despite previous efforts to provide assistance to the poor, the Elizabethan Poor Law was the first national policy enacted to do so. This law required parish governments to tax households and distribute aid to the deserving poor. Those that were considered deserving of aid were people unable to work due to disability or old age. This corresponds to today s Supplemental Security Income program. This is also a national, or better currently known as federal, policy that is designed to provide assistance to people with little income. It, too, determines those that are deserving of assistance as people who are elderly or who have a disability. Lastly, the long term hypothesis will be that, the abnormal return of the acquiring firm is negative or negligibly close to zero. Literature review: Empirical studies examining stock market reaction to M A announcement find little evidence of wealth creation, with shareholders of the target firms gaining at the expense of the bidder firms. A merger is said to create value, if the combined value of the bidder or target firm increases on the announcement of the merger (Houston et al., 2001) (Ghosh Dutta, 2015) (Campa, 2004). Moreover, the synergistic gains hypothesis of corporate acquisitions underlined by Isa Yap (2004) states that, a combination of two firms will result in a combined gain that is, more than the sum of the value of the individual firm. These gains may be attributed to the increasing efficiencies and synergies of the companies involved. While some studies show there may be little or no improvements in the post acquisiton operating performance of merged banks, M As do create value. This is observed by the positive or negative reactions of stock prices during M A announcements (Isa Yap, 2004) (Campa, 2004) (Drymbetas Kyriazopoulos, 2014). Most studies find that cumulative abnormal returns occur in the days following or prior to the announcement date (Andrade et al., 2001). The view of value creation for ... • 9. Michigan University Of Michigan Football Team The title says it all. The University of Michigan Football Team has been transformed into a monster from the start of the Harbaugh Era. Before Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach Michigan suffered a devastating 5 7 season and missed a bowl game under Brady Hoke. The team is now on the up rise. Even though the statement may offend some, it is true. There are those critics that firmly disagree because of the big plays the defense sometimes allows, an inexperienced quarterbackand weak schedule. Despite their few flaws, Michigan has a championship caliber team capable of monumental wins because of their; prodigious coaching staff, unmatched defensive line, a developing quarterback, improved offense, and the man himself, Jabrill Peppers.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The staff combines to have an impressive thirty two years of experience in the NFL. (Kenyon 1). Many coaches have also worked with head coach Harbaugh in his past coaching gigs, which includes his own son. Michigan has a plethora of notable names to their coaches roster. Names like Jedd Fisch, Tyrone Wheatley, Jay Harbaugh, Michael Zordich, Brian Smith and new coach Don Brown to name a few. Brown coached the number one defense in the nation last year at Boston College. He along with the other remarkable coaches has put together a defense that is unmatched anywhere in the nation. The Michigan defense so far this year has been nothing short of superb. In their first six games, the defense only allowed two rushing touchdowns and less than one hundred total rushing yards a game. (Brouwer 1). Outstanding. As sports reviewer Chris Peterson proclaims in his review for gbmwolevrine.com, [...] when you dive deep into the numbers, [it is] hard not to call Michigan football s defense the best in the country (3). With their great plays on defense frustrating opposing offenses game after game, Michigan has definitely rebuilt their defense. The defense is one of the main reasons why the team is national championship worthy. Another area that the team is working on is developing their fresh quarterback. Essay On Terrorist Violence Despite the struggle to bring about a resolution to the conflict during the 1970s and 80s, terrorist violence continued to be a problem into the early 90s, and British troops remained in full force. In 1981, ten IRA prison hunger strikers starved to death after they used hunger strikes to protest against losing their special category status and against wearing prison uniforms. This democratic success persuaded Republicans of the benefits of politics instead of violence as a way of getting what they wanted. • 11. Theories Of Durkheim Г‰mile Durkheim is widely considered to be one of the founders of the science of sociology. Towards the end of his book, The Rules of Sociological Method, he writes that a science cannot be considered definitively constituted until it has succeeded in establishing its own independent status (150), a statement that strongly suggests that with this work Durkheim is trying to definitively constitute[] (150) sociologyas a science. Contrary to this sentiment, Durkheim appears to rely on already established sciences and scientific methods. Though he is definitely founding something new, Durkheim fundamentally relies on the methods of traditional science to give sociology credibility within the scientific community and beyond. One of the most obvious way Durkheim does this is through his use of heightened and scientific language. He describes sociological principles as being empirical postulate[s], the product[s] of a legitimate induction (Durkheim 149), and claims that one of the key characteristics of sociology is that it... Every sociological phenomenon, just as every biological phenomenon, although staying essentially unchanged, can assume a different form for each particular case (147), therefor making every sociological phenomenon as real and as scientific as every biological phenomenon. • 24. Aesthetic Disinterestedness Analysis Jameson Hoffman HON 3310 Dr. Hayan Charara November 17, 2017 Disinterestedness and Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133). While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea, goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty (15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own ideas and wishes onto it or become swayed by the physical pleasure that accompanies it (15). Joseph DeVito states that interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships. The first point in my theory is that you can better your skills as an interpersonal communicator by better understanding your own culture. DeVito states that there are. several major cultural distinctions that are crucial for more effective communication they are: individualism or collectivism, high or low context, high or low power distance, masculinity or femininity, high or low ambiguity tolerance, long or short term orientation, and indulgent or (p. 34). • 30. Gender And Kinship Roles In Society Reflecting upon gender and kinship roles in contemporary United States of America society: Gender roles are deeply engrained within society, therefore it is no surprise that they would reflect through into the care work employed in organ transplantations. Within society one is culturally groomed to reflect a gender role, a person ultimately becomes a cultural construct of what is believed to be their set genderidentity. The creation of gender roles dates back to the European approach to setting up an economic unit that was a household (Stone 2009). Due to the way society was structured with males being the recipient of inheritance, he therefore bought more economic recourses to the marriage than the woman. A woman could bring a dowry but because of the structure of society it was the only financial contribution she could contribute to the relationship as she was not allowed to work. Men tended to marry older as it gave them more time to amass their wealth. They then tended to take a younger bride because she was more likely to be fertile and thusly continuing the family line (Stone, 2009). Social class also played a role in the persistent gender roles that exist within the contemporary United States of America. In the past female virginity was prized therefore to guard her virginity families would sequester her away in the home as a method of protection. There in itself created a double standard as males could have premarital sex. It further asserted the male dominance of being allowed to participate in society. The sociopolitical dimension of marriage relegate the woman to offset her lack of financial contribution due to her inability to participate in society by performing the household task, thusly proving herself valuable in a marriage. These values that have spanned time have been embodied by the American people and are reflect into Laura Heinemann s work on organ transplantation kinshipand care networks in the form of gendered care. Heinemann s critical engagement as aforementioned with embodiment was not strong. However she did highlight with her extensive fieldwork the embodiment of the set gender roles within the domestic sphere. The image she painted of contemporary America illustrated women ... Sir Ralph began as a man destined to be emotionless and isolated and by the end him and his emotions are all that can save the weak, emotion wrecked Indiana. The Romantic spirit was one that stressed the inherent goodness of humans and individualism outside of society at this time. They believed that man, through human nature is good and well behaved, but society and so called civilization is what disrupts the minds and emotions of people. The Romantics were mostly in response to the Enlightenment movement and their emphasis of reason over emotion. To a Romantic, if man is inherently sinful, reason restrains his passions, but if he is naturally good, then in the proper environment, his emotions can be trusted. This gives credibility to the idea of individualism and the flourishing of human emotions and needs. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Hollow Face Impression Analysis The hollow face illusion is an illusion produced by ambiguity of visual depth processing (Gregory 1970). It occurs when a concave, hollow mask is perceived as a convex face i.e. with facial features protruding towards the observer (Hill and Johnston, 2007). Hill and Bruce (1993) propose that the illusion is a result of the contradictory information received from depth cues. Contrary to this, Hill and Johnston (2007) assert that this is not the case. Rather, they emphasise alternative explanations such as the familiarity of faces and a general inclination towards convexity. A number of studies support these assertions, and moreover provide evidence that suggests a number of factors are critical in creating the illusion. Primarily, these include motion, shading, and orientation. (Marr, 1982; Gregory, 1973; Hill and Bruce, 1993; Georgeson, 1979).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Illness is inevitable in the despairing weather conditions and lack of proper health care. The men begin to lose hope in living, and neglect their assigned tasks. Man vs. nature conflict signifies the recurring weather conditions the men battle through. This conflicting aspect has the most impactful effect on the Zeks because the cold temperatures and frozen precipitation weaken them, increasingly by the hour. Weather clashes with them at all times because they are not given proper shelter. The conditions in the bunks are near what it is like out in the elements, therefore they do not have a place to return for their bodies to recover and gain heat. Because the men are not able to cope in the freezing weather, their bodies begin to shut down. The repeated exposure increasingly weakens and kills off many of the Zeks. Therefore, the most prominent form of conflict is through man vs. nature, which creates the most immense battle within the novel, forcing the laborers to fight daily for their lives. The family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a their deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did not like this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are being punished for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place unlike many ghosts. The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life of mourning for the family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more supernatural myth to it. In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing that it is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known as the Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De Danann, the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from Greece (some say, of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which hid the sun and their appearance for three days and nights... • 49. The Influence Of Gothic Elements In Tim Burton s Movies Tim burton is very good at using color to establish a mood. As seen in many of his hit movies, color is a large part. Tim burton uses certain cinematic techniques such as color symbolism. For example, in Alice in Wonderland , you can see that Tim burton purposefully makes queen Iracebeth s castle dark and red to show that she is angry or even dangerous while Tim Burton makes Mirana of Marmoreal s castle white to show tranquil and goodness. Even the small things matter to Tim Burton. All colors are specially chosen because it would change the whole movie if he changed a white castle to a black castle. This technique can also be found in Charlie and the Chocolate Factoryin the scene when they are riding on the boat down the chocolate river.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gothic elements such as castles, or ancient prophecies are used all throughout his movies. If you asked many people would say this is the factor that tells them that a movie was directed by Tim Burton. Throughout all of his movies there are always one or two gothic elements included. For example, in Edward Scissorhands , you can find two gothic elements. Setting in a castle and inexplicable events. Edward Scissorhands is found in a dark, supposably haunted castle when peg finds him in a dark corner. If Edward was found in the middle of the desert it wouldn t be intense. The explicable event is that Edward was converted to a normal human but he was a robot and he has scissors for hands. Tim Burton makes these gothic elements very obvious so it can change the tone of the movie from happy to creepy. Tim burton also uses gothic elements in Alice in Wonderland . Again, he uses a castle as the setting for most of the movie but also adds an ancient prophecy. The castle is used to show the scary queen and the ancient prophecy is used to depict what will happen throughout the rest of time. Tim Burton likes to use these to change the mood very quick, which is one reason why Tim burton loves using this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Cover Contest Reflection In the summer of 2016, I decided to enter the Luzerne county fair s guide cover contest. I came across a problem, however; I missed the deadline and would need to wait till next year. I still went to the fair in September to see my competition in other categories I entered, and to look at who won the cover contest. When I saw the winning cover, I became discouraged. It was much better than anything I could draw. I thought I wouldn t have a chance in next year s contest. I continued on in the fair, wondering at what would happened if I entered next year. In May of 2017, I gained my enthusiasm back. This time, I became determined to win the cover contest. More importantly, I became determined to gain confidence in myself. I started working on ... • 51. Analyse Two or Three of Heaney s Poems to Show How Common... Heaney s first anthology Death of a Naturalist is the best source for poems that show how common and often mundane things are described in beautiful language and rediscovered as meaningful activities. Digging , Blackberry Picking and Personal Helicon are prime examples of Kavanagh s words. When reading the name of the poem Digging , it seems like it will be about nothing at all. Digging is a basic and ordinary activity and the reader does not expect anything meaningful when reading the poem. This is deceptive, because the first two lines present readers with a sense of choice. Heaney immediately makes them aware of the deeper issue of the subject he is about to explore and therefore creates an alertness in them. Heaney labels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He digs with such intensity that he rests only to drink a bottle of milk before returning to his task. The grandfather s professionalism is contrasted to Heaney s clumsiness, because he brings his grandfather a bottle of milk corked sloppily with paper (20). It is clear that the seventh stanza is no longer about digging. It is about something far more significant. Heaney remembers the act of digging and it is no longer poetic. He describes the smell of potato mould as cold (25) and the sounds are no longer clean and precise. This sudden reality of the messiness of digging implies that Heaney is no longer referring to the activity, but rather is returning to the violence of the first stanza. The choice he gives is the pen or the gun and in the last line of the seventh stanza Heaney states that he has no spade to follow men like (28) his father and grandfather. Ultimately. Heaney chooses the pen over the gun and therefore poetry over violence. The last stanza shows that Heaney has faith in his poetry to make a difference. He believes that it can solve problems that can not be resolved with a gun. Digging is not a poem about an ordinary and simple activity, but rather a metaphor of choice between poetry and violence. Blackberry Picking is similar in its function, but broaches a different subject. Again the heading names a simple and ordinary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So twenty dogs sled teams relayed the serum from the town of Nenana to Nome. The hardships of the dogs and mushers went through along with the hero dogs, and teams of mushers and dogs will forever be alive in Alaskan history. This journey is a gratifying accomplishment and a proud moment in Alaskan history.
