Chinese Empire Building In The Qing Dynasty
Starting in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Qing dynasty had built an immense
territory that greatly proceeded that any other empire of its time. The Chinese empire incorporated
many non Chinese people and continued to expand its empire. When the Qing dynasty conquered
China, they wanted to keep their ethnic distinctiveness so they forbade intermarriage between the
Chinese and themselves. The ruling elites of the Qing dynastymastered the Chinese language and
used the bureaucratic system of government to rule the empire. Three major features of Chinese
empire building in the early modern era were bringing non Chinese into the territory, security
concerns, and cultural respect among neighboring peoples. These three distinctive features helped
shape Chinas empire to what it is today.
Chinese empire building vastly enlarged the territorial size of China and brought a number of non
Chinese people into the region (Strayer, 640). This influx of different people allowed China to
grow as a nation and introduced China to many different cultures. New people meant new
languages, new skills, and new technology which aided in the strong empire building. China

The Qing dynasty started an eighty year military effort (1680 1760) that brought these huge
regions solidly under Chinese Control (Strayer, 640). Despite its economic need, security was
what caused this aggressive action to begin. Chinese expansion was viewed as a defensive
necessity (Strayer, 640). Although the Qing dynasty was taken over by the Manchus, their
campaigns against the Mongols marked the evolution of China into a Central Asian empire
(Strayer, 640). The Chinese wanted to unify the people of Eurasia. The Qing dynasty made use of
China s military technology by taking over central Eurasia. The Chinese made use of local notables
as they attempted to gain control of the

Eating Disorders and Alcohol Abuse Essay
Eating Disorders and Alcohol Abuse
The relationship between eating disorders and alcoholism has become a widely researched topic
only in the last fifteen years. Since 1985, there have been an increasing number of research and case
studies substantiating a correlation between these two behavioral and addictive disorders.
Alcoholism affects nearly 14 million United States citizens (http://silk.nih.gov/silk/niaaa1
/publication/booklet.htm ). The four basic elements of this disease include a craving for, loss of
control over, physical dependence on, and tolerance to alcohol (http://silk.nih.gov/silk/niaaa1
/publication/booklet.htm). Unfortunately, there is no cure for alcoholism, although various forms of
treatment have become available. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mean age of the subjects was 32 years and 7 months and they were equally divided among
the upper two social classes. The goal of this research was to examine the past and present eating
habits of female alcoholics to determine whether or not a correlation between the two disorders
existed. Two methods of research were used to evaluate the subjects: an interview and a
questionnaire. One of the authors interviewed each subject individually. The interview consisted
of two parts: (1) a detailed assessment of past and present eating behaviors and (2) an evaluation
of drinking patterns. The first part of the interview based eating disorders on a variety of patterns,
including binge eating behaviors that lasted for at least 6 months. The second part of the interview
used a pre determined interview created by Stockwell et al. to determine levels of alcohol
dependence. The questionnaire consisted of the Eating Attitudes Test, which is a standardized
measure of anorectic and bulimic behavior (Lacey et al., 1986: pp. 390).
The results of this study supported a correlation between past or present eating disorders and
alcoholism. The sample had mild to moderate dependence on alcohol, ranging from continuous to
fluctuating intake. 11 members of the sample had experience with binge eating. Nine of the patients
had a history of purging to deter weight gain. All of the patients were menstruating and all but one
were in normal weight ranges (Lacey et al., 1986). Although six

Gasoline Refinement Essay
Gasoline
Gasoline as we know it today comes from crude oil. Crude oil, which is a fossil fuel, is a
nonrenewable (once its gone, its gone for good) fuel source. Fossil fuel is comprised of
naturally decaying plants and animals which once lived in oceans and seas millions of years
ago. Where we find crude oil deposits we also find ancient oceans and seabeds. When extracted
from the earth, crude oil may have colors ranging from clear to jet black and resistance to flow
or viscosity from water to a molasses type substance. Crude oil that is low in metals and sulfur
content, light in color and flow easy are said to be light and cost more where those which are high

Holding tanks can hold up 16 millions gallons of crude per tank. Holding tanks have containment
areas surrounding them to hold the total contents of the tank in a rare case that the tank was
ruptured.
When the refinery is ready to turn the crude oil into useful substances such as gasoline, diesel fuel
and other products. It goes through several basic steps, which are distilling, cracking, treating,
reforming and blending. The crude oil is pumped through pipes into a hot furnace; this first step is
the distilling process (involves several columns or towers which, most of us believe to be smoke
stacks) that separates light hydrocarbons from heavy ones. This process must be monitored very
closely. If the crude oil is over heated it will cause thermal decomposition and create unwanted
waste. As the crude oil is heated the hundreds of different hydrocarbons vaporize at different
temperatures. Light materials like butane, propane, natural gas and petroleum ether will vaporize
between 68 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It will then condense at the top of the column. Medium
weight materials such as gasoline and diesel fuel will vaporize between 104 and 390 degrees
Fahrenheit, then condenses in the middle of the column. Kerosene vaporizes at 150 500 degrees
Fahrenheit, fuel oils between 500 750 degrees Fahrenheit and lubricants above 750 degrees
Fahrenheit. Heavy

Injustice, Discrimination and Racism in Obasan by Joy...
I am black of an African American decent. I am Chinese of a Korean decent. I am white, I am
Canadian. These statements are common examples of how many people view their race and
identity. Similar to the statements made in the novels, Obasan by Joy Kogawa and More by Austin
Clarke. Both novels illustrate people as attaching an individual s identity through their race, colour
and ethnicity. Naomi Nah Cane characterized in Obasan, is born in Canada but is looked upon
and is treated as an immigrant, similar to Idora Morrison who has a Canadian citizenship and
has lived in Canada for many years is still viewed as an immigrant. Although, Naomi and Idora
both raise questions on why they don t belong in the white community, however Idora truly fights
back and raises a voice rather than Naomi who is more silent in such discriminations. Naomi was
born in Vancouver; British Colombia but always is categorized as a Japanese woman and never
accepted as a Canadian because of her physical characteristics and the past history of the war. Due
to the war in 1942 caused by the attack on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese and some British
territories, the Canadians restricted and alienated the Japanese from all of their activities; they
seized their homes and property without any compensation, evacuated the Japanese from coastal
British Columbia and even restricted them to go back. It is unreasonable to take such actions to the
Japanese and continue keeping them eliminated and alienated from

To Kill A Mockingbird Racism Quotes

Racism within To Kill a MockingBird There are many things cause by humans that can separate
a world and hurt very many people at one time. Anger or greed are some of the things we are all
fighting. However, neither of those come close to racism. The world s worst prejudice is racism,
To Kill a Mockingbird presented us with racism within their community and everyone was being
hurt by it. To Kill a Mockingbird was written during the depression when racism was
unfortunately accepted. This book shows how a family in a small southern town wanted it to
stop. In every situation life throws at us someone always disagrees. In Maycomb, there was a
whole crowd. As read in this Novel by Harper Lee, she shows that a community with differences
always goes down as a whole. Racism took a huge role in every little part of To Kill a
Mockingbird. By far the worst victim was Tom Robinson. Tom is the black man who plead guilty
of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Tom was accused by Mayella s lying father Bob Ewell.
Tom was brought to court and had a all white jury. Atticus knows that Tom would never do such a
thing and is completely innocent, and shows as much evidence as he could. Even though all the
evidence Atticus put on the table showed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The people of Maycomb were slowly starting to understand that their town looked great to an
outsider but was uglier than a New York City rat on the inside. They were dividing all because of
racism. Some folks of Maycomb did not like it, but all the others accepted it as every other town
did during the depression. The black community had many different views from the folks in
Maycomb. Some folks changed theirs while others kept the same ugly view of it. All in all, the

The Large Regulatory Subunit
The large regulatory subunit PriL
The large subunit (PriL) of the primase is a regulatory, non catalytic subunit, where its exact role is
still undefined. Nonetheless, PriL, and in particular PriL C terminal domain (PriL CTD), has been
shown to have an essential role at the initiation stage of primer synthesis, but not during the
extension step. In fact, it is an essential gene in yeast. It has also been inferred that PriL CTD, is
involved in the primase counting mechanism (p58 .counting..). The PriL CTD has an iron sulfur
cluster which seems to play a structural role in conserving the correct three dimentional structure
of the CTD (Agarkar et al. 2011 ; Sauguet et al. 2010 ; Vaithiyalingam et al. 2010 ). To date, the
structure of PriL has not been solved in its integrity. Instead, substructures of a C terminally
truncated version of PriL (PriL О”CTD) have been solved in archaea and human (....). In addition,
the structure of PriL CTD has been reported for both yeast and human. In fact, two crystal structures
were reported for the human p58C (C terminal domain of the human large subunit) (.....).
In both archaeal and eukaryotic primases, PriL CTD exhibits a similar structure consisting of two
main domains; PriLО± and PriL SBD. PriLО± is a larger globular helical domain, while PriL SBD
is a smaller domain with a mix of both О± and ОІ secondary structures. PriL SBD represents the
surface binding domain that is in direct contact with PriS and constitute the dimerization interface.

The Behavioral Perspective Of Human Development
Human development is a process that occurs throughout the lifespan, and lifespan development
theories offer frameworks for which to understand human growth. Different approaches focus on
specific aspects of human life to determine which has the most significant influence on
development. However, one theory usually does not account for all variables of humangrowth so
more than one perspective may be used to analyze development. Two such perspectives, the
behavioral and the contextual, explain development in different ways. The behavioral perspective
focuses on observable behavior, while the contextual perspective focuses on interrelated systems
that influence development. When applied to the case study in the index, the differences in the
behavioral and contextual theories become evident.
The Behavioral Perspective
The behavioral perspective of development suggests that human development can be understood by
observing how people behave in response to environmental stimuli. This theory denies distinct
universal stages in development and insists that environmental factors influence how a person will
change and adapt in their society. From this perspective, people will have positive developmental
experiences if they grow up in a nurturing environment. B.F. Skinner introduced the operant
conditioning theory which asserts that children develop in response to reinforcement or punishment
(Feldman Landry, 2014, p. 15). Reinforcement increases the likelihood of someone

responsibility for something gives you something to measure up to. Personal responsibility is the

you won t advance in your career. It all comes down to this; being responsible and doing well in

Video Game Console Developed And Manufactured By Nintendo
The is a 32 bit table top 3D video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was
marketed as the first portable video game console capable of displaying true 3D graphics out of the
box.
It was released on July 21, 1995 in Japan and August 14, 1995 in North America at a price of
around US$180. It proved to be a commercial failure and was not released in other regions. Its
negative reception was unaffected by continued price drops. Nintendo discontinued it the following
year on March 2, 1996. The Virtual Boy is Nintendo s lowest selling console.

Development
The New York Times previewed the Virtual Boy on November 13, 1994. The console was
officially announced via press release the next day, November 14. Nintendo promised that Virtual
Boy would totally immerse players into their own private universe. The system was formally
unveiled the next day at the Shoshinkai Show. Nintendo of America showed the Virtual Boy at the
Consumer Electronics Show on 6 January 1995. This was following the collapse of a potential deal
with Sega, which decided to pass on the technology.
Problems emerged when Nintendo attempted to turn its vision into an affordable console,
searching for low cost hardware components. Color was also said to have caused jumpy images in
tests. Design News described the Virtual Boy as the logical evolution of the View Master 3

he joined the American Ambulance Corps and arrived in France as World War I ended. When

Police Department And The Law Enforcement
The police department and the law enforcement sector as a whole has been thought of having
myriad challenges with regards to situations of the breaking of law. This is mainly because an
officer is not always aware of what type of situation he/ she is going to encounter next in the
course of maintaining law and order which is their basic mandate; having said that, it is an all too
familiar situation to the law enforcement officers that any particular situation is entirely different
from another. With respect to that, an officer may encounter some breaking of the law in one
particular street; in such a street or state, the citizens may be having a very good record as far as
observing the law is concerned. On the other hand, the same policeofficer may encounter a
situation whereby a citizen has gone contrary to the law in a street infamous for the breach of
law and order. In both cases, police discretion is highly advised. It would not be a surprise to see
the officer acting harsh on the latter scenario as a result of the pre formed mindset as far as
history of a particular area of jurisdiction is concerned. It is for that reason that police discretion
appears to be quite a challenging issue of concern in any typical society as a result of controversies
which tend to occur in the process of exercising police discretion as asserted by Ross, (2012).

Police discretion in this context refers to the ability of a law enforcement officer to make a quick

The Pros And Cons Of Dystopian Society
In literature, dystopias have always been given a bad reputation for being detrimental to a
society. However, this belief does not represent the positives of a society being dystopian. It is
known that any dystopia, a detrimental society, was created originally as a utopia, a pleasant
society. This means that any dystopia was started with the hope of helping people, but since no
government can make everyone happy, the society eventually breaks down into a dystopia. The
fact that many dystopias are rooted in good intentions means that, while contrary to popular
belief, there must be some good things to a dystopian society. Despite most people thinking that
dystopias are completely rotten, there are in fact some benefits to a society being dystopian.
One positive of a dystopia is that people feel safer. While the idea of safety in a society that is
known to be dystopian may be strange to some, it makes sense that a strong government will
take action to protect its citizens from the external threats they are faced with to keep their
loyalty. Safety may come in the form of lowering the crime rate, making people feel less
discriminated, and/or withholding troubling information from the people. In the movie The
Minority Report, the police have the ability to know when someone will commit a crime before
the crime itself occurs (Dick and Spielberg). This allows the police ample time to make an arrest
before any offense can take place. Since the police have the ability to know when

Formal Critique of “Indian Summer Hudson River” Essay
Albert Bierstadt (1830 1902) was an American artist and member of the Hudson River School.
He was one of the first of the Hudson River Artist s to paint beyond New York and see the

titled Indian Summer Hudson River was completed in 1861. It is an oil on canvas painting, which
measures twenty four inches in height by forty one inches wide. One looks out across a secluded
section of the Hudson River. It is late afternoon, and the sun is beginning its decent. The sun is

Implied line is used to draw the viewer s eyes to the cattle which are crossing in the sun s
reflection upon the river, then up toward the sun where it guides one s eyes around the outsides of
the painting. Bierstadt uses both a restricted palette and analogous color scheme of reds oranges
and yellows, which differ in their levels of intensity, thus giving a sense of time to the artwork. By
use of these colors the viewer can determine the time of the year in the painting is fall, and the time
of the day could be perceived to be early morning or late afternoon. While one is unable to touch
this painting to determine its physical texture, what one cannot help but be impressed with is the
painting s visual texture. Bierstadt use of texture helps to aid in the illusion of the painting s three
dimensional quality. He achieves texture with the illusion of light, through color choice, and in
suggested motion of the water and leaves through repetition and patterns. The most dominant
element in this painting would be the sense of space it exhibits. Bierstadt achieves this again
through the use of implied line in the trees which move upward toward the sky and down into the
water. In continuing the analysis of Bierstadt s painting, one must also explore the principles of art
in his painting and what elements create them. The emphasis or focal point of Bierstadt s Indian
Summer is undoubtedly the sun. The sun is painted with such

Asbestos
What is asbestos you ask? Well asbestos is the name for a group of naturally occurring silicate
minerals that can be separated into fibers. The fibers are strong, durable, and resistant to heat and
fire. They are also long, thin, and flexible, so that they can even be woven into cloth. Because of
these qualities, asbestos has been used in thousands if consumer, industrial, maritime, automotive,
scientific and building products. During the twentieth century, some 30 million tons of asbestos
were used in industrial sites, homes, schools, shipyards and commercial buildings in the United

Asbestos in the home can be very dangerous. It is very common for homes built or remodeled
before the 1970 s to have asbestos containing materials in them. During the twentieth century,
about 30 million tons of asbestos fibers were used in the United States, and some of this asbestos
ended up in residential buildings. If you have purchased a home or are considering the purchase
of one, the presence of asbestos is nor necessarily a problem. The majority of individuals with
asbestos related diseases have been in the business of manufacturing, installing and/or removing
asbestos products. Fortunately, most people exposed to small amounts of asbestos do not develop
asbestos related health problems. However, there is no known safe level of exposure, therefore, all
exposure to asbestos should be avoided.
The worst possible place asbestos can be is in your school. Asbestos containing products were
used extensively in the construction of schools and other public buildings in the 1970 s. In 1986,

asbestos materials in schools that are intact generally do not pose a health risk, and includes

same as regular baseball, except the games were played in a field that was the equivalent to a
sand lot of today. He also played basketball, and was interested in track, but there was no track
team, so Jim had to run against friends in unofficial meets. As Jim once said, Our lives were lived
in the open, winter and summer. We were never in the house when we could be out of it, and we
played hard. I emphasize this because the boys who would grow up to be strong men, must lay the
foundation in a vigorous youth.
In May of 1896, Hiram decided to take Jim and Charlie hunting. They made plans for the trip and
both boys grew very excited every day. However on the day of the trip, Charlie fell violently ill
and was unable to go on the trip. Still enthused about the trip, Jim and Hiram set off and
dedicated the trip to Charlie. That day on his first hunting trip Jim saw a deer. He aimed his rifle
at the deer and as Hiram looked on, Jim shot the deer almost directly in the heart and dropped it
where it stood. Jim was excited and couldn t wait to get back and show Charlie what had
happened, so a few days later they packed up and headed home. The day they returned home they
received bad news; Charlie had been sent to the infirmary in

The History Of British Warfare
Warfare has been apart of British history for many centries. During the 1700 s, battles such as
The Battle of Quebec, The Battle of Yorktown, The Battle of Bunker Hill, and The Battle of
Ticonderoga helped show the strength and weakness of the British Army. During the 1800 s,
battles such as The Battle of Lake Erie, The Battle of Waterloo, and The Battle of Rorke s Drift
helped demonstrate and give examples of alliances, national pride, and victories. During the 1900s,
battles such as The Battle of Mons, The Battle of Britain, and The Battle of Singapore demonstrated
positivity and defense. From the early 1700s to the late 1900s, numerous British battles took place

Cornwallis couldn t help the British in anyway, and they were outnumbered. On October 19,
1781, the British surrendered. The importance of this battle was that the surrender of the British
was a main loss for them. It ultimately ended The American War for Independence and solidifies
their loss of control over the colonies. Then, The Battle of Bunker Hill was a battle between the
British and the Americans on June 17, 1775. It took place in Charlestown, Massachusetts on
Breed s Hill. William Prescott lead American troops to the top of Bunker Hill where they dug
trenches looking down upon the British Naval force. The colonists shot through two fleets of
British soldiers that tried to attack. There were many accounts of the attack. ... our men reserved

Introduction
Our world today is based off of technology and one form of technology in particular seems to
control us more than we control it. Cell phones. The iPhone in particular is one of the most popular
forms of technology in the world. On June 29, 2007, Apple released the first iPhone ever (Nguyen).
The public had mixed feeling on the newest touch screen phone, some thought it was a step towards
a greater future in technology and others thought it was too complicated and technology is moving
too fast for mankind. Little did we know that the iPhone would become the most popular

(McKeen, Price 5). The iPhone was the first true touchscreen phone on the market that grabbed
people s attention. Ever since the first release of the iPhone, sales have increased every year for
every new iPhone that Apple releases.

Women In Antigone
No matter how close brothers and sisters are, siblings will ultimately disagree at one time or
another. Just like oil and water, Antigone and Ismene don t mix. In the play Antigone by Sophocles,
Ismene acts as a foil to her sister Antigone by highlighting their differing opinions as women in a
Greek society.
One conflict always brought upon Antigone and Ismene is the power of man versus the power of
the Gods. While Ismene believes that she has no strength to break laws that were meant for the
public good (Prologue 62 63), her opposite believes that everyone will remember what things [she
suffers], and at what men s hands, because [she] would not transgress the laws of heaven (4. 734

Environmental Impact And Sustainability Issues Related For...
Environmental Impact and Sustainability Issues related to PBDEs
In chapter fourteen of our textbook, Environment: The Science Behind The Stories, it is made clear
that the United States does not use the precautionary principle approach when it comes to
evaluating how toxic a substance is (Withgott Laposata, 2014, p. 382). This lack of precaution has
proven to be dangerous when it comes to chemicals, especially when using polybrominated
diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). PBDEs are chemically engineered flame retardants used during the
manufacturing process of clothing, bedding, and many other household goods. These flame
retardants work by eliminating the fire s oxygen supply, resulting in less damage to the item and a
decrease in the chance of a larger fire (Hester Harrison, 2013, p. 45). While PBDEs may have been
necessary during a time when there were fewer fire regulations, it is clear that the negative effects
of these flame retardants outweigh the benefits in today s times.
According to the journal of Environmental Science Technology (2016), the toxicity of PBDEs was
first discovered in Sweden, when a study exposed an unsafe and increasing level of flame
retardants in the breast milk of women. This study showed that PBDEs were potentially toxic and
highly bioaccumulative, meaning that they accumulate in the body instead of being broken down.
PBDEs were identified as mutagens, as well as possible carcinogens. Because of these findings,
PBDEs were banned in some countries and

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, by Robert Frost Essay
Robert Frost uses metaphor and symbolism extensively in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy
Evening , developing deeper and more complex meanings from a superficially simple poem. Frost s
own analysis contributes greatly to our appreciation of the importance of metaphor, claiming that
metaphor [is] the whole of thinking, inviting the reader to interpret the beautiful scene in a more
profound way. However, the multitude of possible interpretations sees it being read as either
carefully crafted lyric, a suicide poem, [or] as recording a single autobiographical incident . Judith
Oster argues, therefore, that the social conditions individual to each reader tangibly alter our
understanding of metaphor. Despite the simplicity of language,... Show more content on

The issues that Frost explores are universalised by metaphor, with allusions to literary traditions
such as in Hamlet s soliloquy, where the nature of life is explored. These conflicts between our
duties and the promise of sleep are pre eminently relevant to both the personal dilemma faced by the
traveller but also to the reader, who is no closer to determining whether the final conclusion made is
one of suicide and rest or whether the promises outweigh the traveller s intemperance with the
woods. As the poem becomes increasingly complex, the conventional metaphor of falling snow
contributes layer upon layer of meaning. The downy flake transcends its literal sense, becoming a
blanket that both obscures and numbs the senses, hiding the dangers whilst tempting the traveller to
stop. The coldness and darkness of the setting contrasts the purity of snow with the shadowy, even
sinister idea that nature is enticing us with eternal rest. Frost s allusions to the poem, Keen fitful

Rhetorical Analysis Of Stop Being A Sugar Cookie
Stop Being a Sugar Cookie On May 11th 2013, my grandma passed away due to pancreatic

The logos Admiral William McRaven includes in his speech helps to strengthen his claim that all
it takes is just one person s actions to affect many others. In the opening of his speech, the
Admiral recalls the university s slogan and explains that the average American will meet 10,000
people in their life time (McRaven 1) and that if every one of the 8,000 graduates changed the
lives of just ten people and each one of those folks changed the lives of another ten people just
ten then in five generations 125 years the class of 2014 will have changed the lives of 800
million people, (1) the audience grasps the idea that they really can change an abundant number
of lives if they believe they can and act upon those beliefs. Throughout his speech, McRaven s
tone remains powerful as he relays his message to the audience and uses his own experiences to
inspire them. Admiral McRaven also uses logos when stating that his SEAL class was down to
just 35 (4) men, when it had started with 150. And then again in describing the obstacle course
which contained 25 obstacles including a 10 foot high wall, a 30 foot cargo net (McRaven 6).
McRaven elaborates on the most challenging obstacle (6) which had a three level 30 foot tower
at one end and a one level tower at the other. In between was a 200 foot long rope, (6) called the
slide for life. McRaven includes this description to illustrate how difficult his time was at

Also add the ingredients of their favorite recipes. You can use this list every week and keep

Trudeau s approach to the situation provided Canadians security and safety. During Trudeau s time
in office, Quebec separatism was becoming an alarming issue. A terrorist organization, Front de
Liberation du Quebec (FLQ), was formed in an effort to separate Quebec from the rest of
Canada. The extremist brought havoc to Quebec and demanded separation from the Anglo

Cross. They demanded the release of FLQ members, the payment of $500,000, the publication of
the FLQ manifesto and an airplane ticket to either Cuba or Algeria. After, the FLQ went on to
kidnap Quebec Cabinet Minister of Labour and Immigration, Pierre Laporte, on October 10,
1970. In retaliation and for the security of the people, Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act.
The War Measures Act, called in military personnel in Quebec to restore order, provide security
and to help bring an end to the FLQ. With these circumstance the War Measures Act was
appropriate action taken, as it brings security to the people of Quebec. Furthermore, it is key to
remember the FLQ was a terrorist organization and it was important that Trudeau eliminate the
threat they posed to Canadians. Ricci writes in his novel Pierre Elliott Trudeau, FLQ had been

The Effects Of Malnutrition On Educational Disparities
The Impact of Malnutrition on Educational Disparities in Africa
By: Merette Khalil and Blessing Kuebee, African Students Association At the start of the
millennium, various United Nations (UN) partners came together to tackle some of the world s
deadliest and most pressing social and economic problems, and in doing so, established the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the past 15 years, the MDGs have been evaluated
and re evaluated. This year the UN has declared a new set of 17 goals for the next 15 years called
the Sustainable Development Goals. The first issue on both agendas is the eradication of extreme
poverty and hunger, a problem that is specifically significant for the entire continent of Africa.
Clarifying a few terms based on the World Food Program s definition is essential to understanding
the scope of the problem.
Hunger is not having enough to eat to meet energy requirements. It can lead to malnutrition, which
is a condition when one s diet does not provide adequate nutrients for growth and maintenance or
when a person is not able to adequately utilize the food consumed due to illness. Undernutrition,
being nutrient deficient, being underweight and even being overweight are all complications that
result from hunger.
Undernourishment is when a person is not able to acquire enough food to meet the daily minimum
dietary energy requirements, over a period of one year.
Wasting is rapid weight loss or a failure to gain weight and is strongly related

My Experience In Counselling
My first experience with counselling was when I was roughly 17 years old. Back then I was a
part of the people who believed in the myths surrounding counselling, back then it was my last
option but I can still look back and say that I took that decision on my own and I was prepared to
face resistance which I did, in the form of my parents who thought that it was an option for people
who had gone mad . Overcoming these resistances I finally went ahead for counselling and to my
absolute disappointment, the sessionwas useless and at times even offensive to me. The counsellor
asked me my age and started telling a long list of problems I may be facing. She didn t stop there

The first of which are issues that are personal to me, I realise that there are experiences in my
past that may hinder me as a counsellor the most important of which is my inability to maintain

session might convey a very negative impression to the client for they may interpret it as my
disinterest. This issue has prompted me to go to personal therapy and also has increased the
relevance and importance of personal therapy in my eyes. Through this experience I have also
realised how unresolved issues in the past can impact the counselling process with or without you
being aware about them. There are many areas that I need to work on expect this and the major
among them is my competence as a counsellor, I still need to develop various professional skills
that I will be required to employ in the counselling session and that is something I believe I will
gain from my course. The most important thing that believe I need to work on are my own beliefs
about counselling, for a long time I didn t realise that despite being trained for becoming a
counsellor I never realised that even to me counselling seemed appropriate as the last option, a
choice you make when all else fails and also that with time things will eventually get better and
you don t need therapy to work through it. Both of these beliefs seem wrong to be now that I
have gained more objective knowledge of counselling. Firstly, to keep counselling as a last resort
the person is embracing a very likely possibility that things would get worse then on rather than
better and if proper therapy is undertaken at the very beginning of a problem it will improve
things for the individual for definite and may also be more effective and efficient in comparison to
if you let it blow to proportion that may severely

The End Of Remembering And Susan Griffin s Our Secret
Memory what it is, how it works, and how it might be manipulated has long been a subject of
curious fascination. Remembering, the mind boggling ability in which the human brain can
conjure up very specific, very lucid, long gone episodes from any given point on the timeline of
our lives, is an astounding feat. Yet, along with our brain s ability of remembrance comes also the
concept of forgetting: interruptions of memoryor an inability of consciousness to make present to
itself what it wants (Honold, 1994, p. 2). There is a very close relationship between remembering
and forgetting; in fact, the two come hand in hand. A close reading of Joshua Foer s essay, The
End of Remembering , and Susan Griffin s piece, Our Secret , directs us... Show more content on

Susan Griffin, a feminist writer and finalist for the Pulitzer Price in non fiction, explores the
concept of forgetting in her chapter Our Secret . Unlike Foer, Griffin (1992) doesn t seem to be
too much a fan of remembering, describing memory to be like a long, half lit tunnel, a tunnel
where one is likely to encounter phantoms of a self, long concealed, no longer nourished with the
force of consciousness, existing in a tortured state between life and death (p. 258). In fact, Griffin
might argue that there are several benefits to forgetting, and that the collective memories of a
traumatic past should not be remembered or preserved. Failure to retrieve memories may not
always be a bad thing, in fact, unwanted memories of childhood trauma, emotional rejection, or
any of life s inevitable disappointments have the ability to torment and mentally exhaust a person.
Throughout her essay, Griffin explores the hidden shame and pains that several characters carry,
herself included, and the consequences they bring. She writes of one woman s memories of the
cold war, who, as a young child, witnessed shoes in great piles. Bones. Women s hair, clothes,
stains, a terrible odor , all of which left her sobbing and screaming in fear (Griffin, 1992, p. 233).

The Use Of Alternative Energy Sources
Alternative energy sources can be implemented for house and car factories and any other facility

As of April, 2015, forms of euthanasia and PAS have been legalized in six countries and four US
states (Marker). In North America, the only country where PAS is completely legal currently is
Canada. In a 1995 verdict made by the Canadian Senate (Boudreau and Somerville 1 12):
[t]he court ruled that laws making physician assisted death illegal violated Canadians constitutional
rights in cases where an adult clearly consents to the termination of life and has a grievous and
irremediable medical condition. (Larson)
This decision has been met with a mostly positive response, with statistics showing that more than
four out of every five of the Canadian general public approve of the decision. They attribute this to
the freedom of choice to one s body and medical care that the law modifications permit. Another
reason surrounding this response is that:
[...] it is no longer a crime to commit or attempt to commit suicide [...] why, then, is it a crime to
assist it? What is the difference between suicide and assisted suicide that justifies making the one
lawful and the other a crime, that justifies allowing some this choice, while denying it to others?

Analysis Of Karjon s Tale
On the way back, the two were discussing what they might do about all that they had discovered.
Karjon was keen to expand his knowledge and discuss with experts in the field. But first he had
to find an expert in this field or at least a similar field. If one did exist. He was reticent to blindly
accept the premise by Murfon that there was no expert in this area. There had to be someone. The
Hive could not be so ignorant about the skyaround them to not bother with picking someone to
study it.
Murfon s stance was one of caution. He knew that Karjon s insatiable curiosity had got him into
trouble before. The Hive Elders were running out of patience with his endless questions about how
and why the Hive did what they did. Karjon was most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If he is, then why aren t the Elders helping us mine the stuff as well? Besides I got off with another
warning anyway. I did manage to put some doubt into their minds at least. Karjon said with some
pride.
Yes, but it was your last warning. Any more awkward questions to the Information Centre, and you
are going to be demoted down to a cleaner or something, or worse yet, reclamation. It has
happened before you know. So promise me you won t be going to the Centre to pursue this directly.
Murfon was almost pleading but noticed a wry smile on Karjon s face. That was enough to
convince Murfon that Karjon was going to do something. His curiosity had an overwhelming power
over his decision making.
Back at the Hive, Karjon and Murfon immediately sought out Tamblin. He was in his usual area,
at the Rail Area, working on one of the Rails. He crawled out from under it when he saw the
familiar feet of his friends.
Well look what the Drones have sent me. I should send it back. How are you two? Sorry I
couldn t see you this period but this repair job is an emergency. It s the life of an engineer.
Tamblin said. He was glad to see his two friends though.
You ll never guess what we saw at the methane pool? Well, Karjon s special methane pool. The
most amazing sight I have ever seen. You ve got to come out and see it with us. Murfon was almost
exploding with enthusiasm. Karjon was smiling at him.

Five Elements Of Hilia
Mid August The four elements Fire, Air, Water, and Earth are what makes up Hilia (ha lay a),
without these elements Hilia as we know it would be no more. To protect the elements, the
elements would give special powers every 200 years to five children. Those five children that
the elements chose, would be taken away from their family at a young age and would be taught
everything about the world and more things no one could even imagine. Once the five children
learned all that they could, the elements would choose the most powerful one of them all, to be
the leader of Hilia and also know as the light element. With the good comes evil, Hilia has to
have a balance of both to remain stable, so the elements must pick another five children, but
those children would not serve as light, they would serve as the darkest part of Hilia. I was only
two years old when I was taken from my family, I don t even know what my family looks like, or

Ernst s Art
As a Surrealist pioneer, Ernst s art displayed some of the most radical and unorthodox imagery in
the early 1920s. Violence and pain were perhaps the most avant garde elements of Ernst s art,
and this perception is on full display in one of Ernst collages displayed during Breton s Paris Au
Sans Pareil exhibition, The Preparation of Bone Glue. It depicts a diathermy process in which an
electrical current treats joint ailments (Kavky 2012); his use of violence and pain as both cause
and cure intensifies the victimization of the woman (Kavky 2012). The Preparation of Bone Glue
is widely considered as an early example of Surrealist art, and Ernst s early work with the mentally
ill provided significant influence into the troubled minds of some patients.
From a personal perspective, Massacre of the Innocents, released in 1920, represents one of the
more unique and grotesque representations; the imagery in the collage is akin to a modern day
crime scene. Ernst made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Various sources quote Breton as expressing unparalleled admiration (Susik 2011) and Surrealism
found immediate confirmation in [Ernst s] collages from 1920, which reflect a completely new
concept of visual organization (Spies, et al. 2005). Furthermore, one article described this moment
in Surrealist art as central to the movement s research into psychoanalytic theory and the
development of its visual practice (Kavky 2012). The impact of Ernst s contributions motivated
Breton to pen a brief essay entitled Max Ernst reflecting Breton s bald enthusiasm for Ernst s
unique brand of collages (Susik 2011); Breton practically wrote the essay overnight following the
unpacking of Ernst s crate of collages (Susik 2011). Furthermore, Breton called Ernst one of the
most remarkable minds of the age (Susik

Sexual Selection Definition
Survival of the Sexiest
Have you ever noticed that most animals of the same species look completely different in that
some are more beautiful than others? Some fish have vibrant colored ornate tails while others do
not. Some birds have an array of radiant colors while others are dull and drab; their feathers usually
consisting of one monotone color. Science has discovered that gender plays a key role in the
selection of physical qualities. It has been identified that animals of male gender have more dynamic
physical characteristics than the female gender. Female animals are usually one drab color, without
any significant physical qualities. This concept is called sexual selection. What exactly is the
concept of sexual selection, and what is its purpose in the animal kingdom?
Sexual selection is defined as a form of natural selection in which, according to Darwin s theory,
the mate or female is attracted by certain characteristics, form, color, behavior, etc., in the opposite
sex, thus modifications of a special nature are brought about in the species ( Sexual Selection ).

The first is combat. Males of the same species battle for the female s attention and, in turn, get to
mate with her and produce offspring. The second is display. Display is important since the
ornate male features are used to attract females. The female animal sees the male ornaments to
be an indication of the male s vitality (Brown 1 6). The suggestion is that the bigger, more
colorful males have proved themselves to be of better quality and thus the female will be more
attracted to them. The male who is small and not as colorful will probably not produce nearly as
many offspring as the male who is big and bright. Females want high quality males so that they can
produce high quality offspring (Zahavi

My First Memory Of A Young Girl
My earliest memory of anything connected to Jesus was at the age of 8, my mum bought me a
series of books called Alice in Bibleland, which tell the adventures of a young girl as she enters
into famous bible stories and interacts with the characters. I thought the books were spectacular,
well drawn, and a rich source of comfort.
Around this time, I would stay with my grandparents on the weekends. Sometimes my
grandmother (whom I simply call Nanny) would take me and my sister to church. At one point
in the service they would always say the Lord s Prayer, seeing that I didn t know it off by heart,
my grandmother was determined I learn it; she wrote it out, put it in a frame and gave it to me to
put on my bedroom wall. Now I had no excuse. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She would regularly invite me to church and I would normally offer up a very vague excuse.
Catching on to my lack of interest, she warned that the devil could be trying to hinder me from
coming to the truth. I found her boldness offensive and cut all contact.
At the age of 17 my dad became a Christian. I specifically remember changing the religious views
section on my Facebook account to: I respect all religions , subtly saying to my dad, that unlike
him I believed there were many ways to God, if God did indeed exist.
A few months after this, I began the process of applying to university. Since I was getting older I
thought I might attempt to do things properly . It was proper to be a Christian and it was proper to
endure church, even if it was boring. Now this is clear evidence that I was darkened in
understanding, without and without Christ, but God was being exceedingly patient with my folly.
At the age of 18 I received an offer to attend Bath Spa University to study Drama Studies and
Creative Writing. I signed up to the Christian Union at the Fresher s Fair and went along to the
Thursday night meeting. I smiled through the songs and greeted the people. Someone asked me if
I was born again, my response was, What s that? All in all I didn t enjoy the evening and planned to
never return.

Of Mice And Men By Robert Burns
The title of this book is actually comes from a poem To a Mouse , which is written in Scots
dialect, by the 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns. It is about a mouse which carefully
builds a winter nest in a wheat field, but it was destroyed by a ploughman. The mouse had
dreamed of a safe and warm winter but now it have to face the harsh reality of cold, loneliness
and possible death. This is relevant to the novel Of Mice and Men in two ways. First, the
characters in the story are seem to be at the mercy of fate, almost as powerless as mice. For
example, Lennie can be likened to the mouse in the poem by his harmless, innocent, gentle, and
childlike characteristics since he has just as weak as a mouse. Second, it is actually related to
one of the major themes in the novel which is the shattered dreams. Lennie and George are
migrant farm workers who dream of having their own home and land, but this dream is wrecked,
just like the mouse s nest in the poem. The poem also demonstrates that future is unpredictable,
which is related to the story that people cannot control their life and fate is uncertain. Moreover,
the Men in the title could refer to the common men who work on the ranch such as Slim, Candy,
George and Lennie. They are laborers who have simple desires, which is they want to obtain their
own land, so that they may work for themselves and obtain independence. The Mice in the title are
one of the examples of symbolism, it appear in the story for multiple

A Visit From The Goon Squad Analysis
Every work of literature requires a theme for it to be worth reading. Jennifer Egan s A Visit from
the Goon Squad mainly presents the theme of ruin and redemption throughout the novel. This
theme is present alongside with other minor themes like the shift of American culture, and how
the characters self centered ways are crush by time. All of the major characters will find
themselves at some sort of low point in their lives throughout the novel. Jocelyn becomes
addicted to drugs and spends a great amount of her adult life going in and out of rehab; Benny
will lose his record label contract and will be seen as a failure by most of those still in the
industry; and Sasha will show falling into ruin due to her stealing addiction, self isolation from
family, and lack of self love. The idea of ruin and redemption is also present alongside the
characters setting. Theses characters live in a post 9/11 New York City
, where the towers are
destroyed, the streets and rivers are polluted, and surveillance is amplified, making New York
City reflect this theme in a mournful way. The same for the story Goodbye, My Love , Ted goes
to Italy, and notes the ways Naples is degrading. Theses images of ruin, that the characters are
consciousness of, are a representation of ruin in their own lives. Despite the self destruction that
each character faces throughout the novel, a counterbalance for the self destruction is created when
a sense of redemption is introduced. Two of the stories main

  • 2. Chinese Empire Building In The Qing Dynasty Starting in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Qing dynasty had built an immense territory that greatly proceeded that any other empire of its time. The Chinese empire incorporated many non Chinese people and continued to expand its empire. When the Qing dynasty conquered China, they wanted to keep their ethnic distinctiveness so they forbade intermarriage between the Chinese and themselves. The ruling elites of the Qing dynastymastered the Chinese language and used the bureaucratic system of government to rule the empire. Three major features of Chinese empire building in the early modern era were bringing non Chinese into the territory, security concerns, and cultural respect among neighboring peoples. These three distinctive features helped shape Chinas empire to what it is today. Chinese empire building vastly enlarged the territorial size of China and brought a number of non Chinese people into the region (Strayer, 640). This influx of different people allowed China to grow as a nation and introduced China to many different cultures. New people meant new languages, new skills, and new technology which aided in the strong empire building. China appealed to many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Qing dynasty started an eighty year military effort (1680 1760) that brought these huge regions solidly under Chinese Control (Strayer, 640). Despite its economic need, security was what caused this aggressive action to begin. Chinese expansion was viewed as a defensive necessity (Strayer, 640). Although the Qing dynasty was taken over by the Manchus, their campaigns against the Mongols marked the evolution of China into a Central Asian empire (Strayer, 640). The Chinese wanted to unify the people of Eurasia. The Qing dynasty made use of China s military technology by taking over central Eurasia. • 3. Eating Disorders and Alcohol Abuse Essay Eating Disorders and Alcohol Abuse The relationship between eating disorders and alcoholism has become a widely researched topic only in the last fifteen years. Since 1985, there have been an increasing number of research and case studies substantiating a correlation between these two behavioral and addictive disorders. Alcoholism affects nearly 14 million United States citizens (http://silk.nih.gov/silk/niaaa1 /publication/booklet.htm ). The four basic elements of this disease include a craving for, loss of control over, physical dependence on, and tolerance to alcohol (http://silk.nih.gov/silk/niaaa1 /publication/booklet.htm). Unfortunately, there is no cure for alcoholism, although various forms of treatment have become available. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mean age of the subjects was 32 years and 7 months and they were equally divided among the upper two social classes. The goal of this research was to examine the past and present eating habits of female alcoholics to determine whether or not a correlation between the two disorders existed. Two methods of research were used to evaluate the subjects: an interview and a questionnaire. One of the authors interviewed each subject individually. The interview consisted of two parts: (1) a detailed assessment of past and present eating behaviors and (2) an evaluation of drinking patterns. The first part of the interview based eating disorders on a variety of patterns, including binge eating behaviors that lasted for at least 6 months. The second part of the interview used a pre determined interview created by Stockwell et al. to determine levels of alcohol dependence. The questionnaire consisted of the Eating Attitudes Test, which is a standardized measure of anorectic and bulimic behavior (Lacey et al., 1986: pp. 390). The results of this study supported a correlation between past or present eating disorders and alcoholism. The sample had mild to moderate dependence on alcohol, ranging from continuous to fluctuating intake. 11 members of the sample had experience with binge eating. Nine of the patients had a history of purging to deter weight gain. All of the patients were menstruating and all but one were in normal weight ranges (Lacey et al., 1986). Although six ... • 4. Gasoline Refinement Essay Gasoline Gasoline as we know it today comes from crude oil. Crude oil, which is a fossil fuel, is a nonrenewable (once its gone, its gone for good) fuel source. Fossil fuel is comprised of naturally decaying plants and animals which once lived in oceans and seas millions of years ago. Where we find crude oil deposits we also find ancient oceans and seabeds. When extracted from the earth, crude oil may have colors ranging from clear to jet black and resistance to flow or viscosity from water to a molasses type substance. Crude oil that is low in metals and sulfur content, light in color and flow easy are said to be light and cost more where those which are high in metal and sulfur content dark in color and must be heated to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holding tanks can hold up 16 millions gallons of crude per tank. Holding tanks have containment areas surrounding them to hold the total contents of the tank in a rare case that the tank was ruptured. When the refinery is ready to turn the crude oil into useful substances such as gasoline, diesel fuel and other products. It goes through several basic steps, which are distilling, cracking, treating, reforming and blending. The crude oil is pumped through pipes into a hot furnace; this first step is the distilling process (involves several columns or towers which, most of us believe to be smoke stacks) that separates light hydrocarbons from heavy ones. This process must be monitored very closely. If the crude oil is over heated it will cause thermal decomposition and create unwanted waste. As the crude oil is heated the hundreds of different hydrocarbons vaporize at different temperatures. Light materials like butane, propane, natural gas and petroleum ether will vaporize between 68 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It will then condense at the top of the column. Medium weight materials such as gasoline and diesel fuel will vaporize between 104 and 390 degrees Fahrenheit, then condenses in the middle of the column. Kerosene vaporizes at 150 500 degrees Fahrenheit, fuel oils between 500 750 degrees Fahrenheit and lubricants above 750 degrees Fahrenheit. Heavy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Injustice, Discrimination and Racism in Obasan by Joy... I am black of an African American decent. I am Chinese of a Korean decent. I am white, I am Canadian. These statements are common examples of how many people view their race and identity. Similar to the statements made in the novels, Obasan by Joy Kogawa and More by Austin Clarke. Both novels illustrate people as attaching an individual s identity through their race, colour and ethnicity. Naomi Nah Cane characterized in Obasan, is born in Canada but is looked upon and is treated as an immigrant, similar to Idora Morrison who has a Canadian citizenship and has lived in Canada for many years is still viewed as an immigrant. Although, Naomi and Idora both raise questions on why they don t belong in the white community, however Idora truly fights back and raises a voice rather than Naomi who is more silent in such discriminations. Naomi was born in Vancouver; British Colombia but always is categorized as a Japanese woman and never accepted as a Canadian because of her physical characteristics and the past history of the war. Due to the war in 1942 caused by the attack on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese and some British territories, the Canadians restricted and alienated the Japanese from all of their activities; they seized their homes and property without any compensation, evacuated the Japanese from coastal British Columbia and even restricted them to go back. To Kill A Mockingbird Racism Quotes Kade Kloster Hodak ENglish 10 Period 7 Mrs.Guritz Racism within To Kill a MockingBird There are many things cause by humans that can separate a world and hurt very many people at one time. Anger or greed are some of the things we are all fighting. However, neither of those come close to racism. The world s worst prejudice is racism, To Kill a Mockingbird presented us with racism within their community and everyone was being hurt by it. To Kill a Mockingbird was written during the depression when racism was unfortunately accepted. This book shows how a family in a small southern town wanted it to stop. In every situation life throws at us someone always disagrees. In Maycomb, there was a whole crowd. As read in this Novel by Harper Lee, she shows that a community with differences always goes down as a whole. Racism took a huge role in every little part of To Kill a Mockingbird. By far the worst victim was Tom Robinson. Tom is the black man who plead guilty of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Tom was accused by Mayella s lying father Bob Ewell. Tom was brought to court and had a all white jury. Atticus knows that Tom would never do such a thing and is completely innocent, and shows as much evidence as he could. • 9. The Large Regulatory Subunit The large regulatory subunit PriL The large subunit (PriL) of the primase is a regulatory, non catalytic subunit, where its exact role is still undefined. Nonetheless, PriL, and in particular PriL C terminal domain (PriL CTD), has been shown to have an essential role at the initiation stage of primer synthesis, but not during the extension step. In fact, it is an essential gene in yeast. It has also been inferred that PriL CTD, is involved in the primase counting mechanism (p58 .counting..). The PriL CTD has an iron sulfur cluster which seems to play a structural role in conserving the correct three dimentional structure of the CTD (Agarkar et al. 2011 ; Sauguet et al. 2010 ; Vaithiyalingam et al. 2010 ). To date, the structure of PriL has not been solved in its integrity. Instead, substructures of a C terminally truncated version of PriL (PriL О”CTD) have been solved in archaea and human (....). In addition, the structure of PriL CTD has been reported for both yeast and human. In fact, two crystal structures were reported for the human p58C (C terminal domain of the human large subunit) (.....). In both archaeal and eukaryotic primases, PriL CTD exhibits a similar structure consisting of two main domains; PriLО± and PriL SBD. PriLО± is a larger globular helical domain, while PriL SBD is a smaller domain with a mix of both О± and ОІ secondary structures. • 10. The Behavioral Perspective Of Human Development Human development is a process that occurs throughout the lifespan, and lifespan development theories offer frameworks for which to understand human growth. Different approaches focus on specific aspects of human life to determine which has the most significant influence on development. However, one theory usually does not account for all variables of humangrowth so more than one perspective may be used to analyze development. Two such perspectives, the behavioral and the contextual, explain development in different ways. The behavioral perspective focuses on observable behavior, while the contextual perspective focuses on interrelated systems that influence development. When applied to the case study in the index, the differences in the behavioral and contextual theories become evident. The Behavioral Perspective The behavioral perspective of development suggests that human development can be understood by observing how people behave in response to environmental stimuli. This theory denies distinct universal stages in development and insists that environmental factors influence how a person will change and adapt in their society. From this perspective, people will have positive developmental experiences if they grow up in a nurturing environment. B.F. Skinner introduced the operant conditioning theory which asserts that children develop in response to reinforcement or punishment (Feldman Landry, 2014, p. 15). Reinforcement increases the likelihood of someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Video Game Console Developed And Manufactured By Nintendo The is a 32 bit table top 3D video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was marketed as the first portable video game console capable of displaying true 3D graphics out of the box. It was released on July 21, 1995 in Japan and August 14, 1995 in North America at a price of around US$180. It proved to be a commercial failure and was not released in other regions. Its negative reception was unaffected by continued price drops. Nintendo discontinued it the following year on March 2, 1996. The Virtual Boy is Nintendo s lowest selling console. History Development The New York Times previewed the Virtual Boy on November 13, 1994. The console was officially announced via press release the next day, November 14. • 16. Police Department And The Law Enforcement The police department and the law enforcement sector as a whole has been thought of having myriad challenges with regards to situations of the breaking of law. This is mainly because an officer is not always aware of what type of situation he/ she is going to encounter next in the course of maintaining law and order which is their basic mandate; having said that, it is an all too familiar situation to the law enforcement officers that any particular situation is entirely different from another. With respect to that, an officer may encounter some breaking of the law in one particular street; in such a street or state, the citizens may be having a very good record as far as observing the law is concerned. On the other hand, the same policeofficer may encounter a situation whereby a citizen has gone contrary to the law in a street infamous for the breach of law and order. In both cases, police discretion is highly advised. It would not be a surprise to see the officer acting harsh on the latter scenario as a result of the pre formed mindset as far as history of a particular area of jurisdiction is concerned. It is for that reason that police discretion appears to be quite a challenging issue of concern in any typical society as a result of controversies which tend to occur in the process of exercising police discretion as asserted by Ross, (2012). • 17. The Pros And Cons Of Dystopian Society In literature, dystopias have always been given a bad reputation for being detrimental to a society. However, this belief does not represent the positives of a society being dystopian. It is known that any dystopia, a detrimental society, was created originally as a utopia, a pleasant society. This means that any dystopia was started with the hope of helping people, but since no government can make everyone happy, the society eventually breaks down into a dystopia. The fact that many dystopias are rooted in good intentions means that, while contrary to popular belief, there must be some good things to a dystopian society. Despite most people thinking that dystopias are completely rotten, there are in fact some benefits to a society being dystopian. One positive of a dystopia is that people feel safer. While the idea of safety in a society that is known to be dystopian may be strange to some, it makes sense that a strong government will take action to protect its citizens from the external threats they are faced with to keep their loyalty. Safety may come in the form of lowering the crime rate, making people feel less discriminated, and/or withholding troubling information from the people. In the movie The Minority Report, the police have the ability to know when someone will commit a crime before the crime itself occurs (Dick and Spielberg). This allows the police ample time to make an arrest before any offense can take place. Since the police have the ability to know when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was one of the first of the Hudson River Artist s to paint beyond New York and see the unexplored west. Bierstadt s paintings focused more upon the sublime in nature. His painting titled Indian Summer Hudson River was completed in 1861. It is an oil on canvas painting, which measures twenty four inches in height by forty one inches wide. One looks out across a secluded section of the Hudson River. It is late afternoon, and the sun is beginning its decent. Implied line is used to draw the viewer s eyes to the cattle which are crossing in the sun s reflection upon the river, then up toward the sun where it guides one s eyes around the outsides of the painting. By use of these colors the viewer can determine the time of the year in the painting is fall, and the time of the day could be perceived to be early morning or late afternoon. While one is unable to touch this painting to determine its physical texture, what one cannot help but be impressed with is the painting s visual texture. Bierstadt use of texture helps to aid in the illusion of the painting s three dimensional quality. He achieves texture with the illusion of light, through color choice, and in suggested motion of the water and leaves through repetition and patterns. The most dominant element in this painting would be the sense of space it exhibits. Bierstadt achieves this again through the use of implied line in the trees which move upward toward the sky and down into the water. • 24. Environmental Impact And Sustainability Issues Related For... Environmental Impact and Sustainability Issues related to PBDEs In chapter fourteen of our textbook, Environment: The Science Behind The Stories, it is made clear that the United States does not use the precautionary principle approach when it comes to evaluating how toxic a substance is (Withgott Laposata, 2014, p. 382). This lack of precaution has proven to be dangerous when it comes to chemicals, especially when using polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). PBDEs are chemically engineered flame retardants used during the manufacturing process of clothing, bedding, and many other household goods. These flame retardants work by eliminating the fire s oxygen supply, resulting in less damage to the item and a decrease in the chance of a larger fire (Hester Harrison, 2013, p. 45). While PBDEs may have been necessary during a time when there were fewer fire regulations, it is clear that the negative effects of these flame retardants outweigh the benefits in today s times. According to the journal of Environmental Science Technology (2016), the toxicity of PBDEs was first discovered in Sweden, when a study exposed an unsafe and increasing level of flame retardants in the breast milk of women. This study showed that PBDEs were potentially toxic and highly bioaccumulative, meaning that they accumulate in the body instead of being broken down. PBDEs were identified as mutagens, as well as possible carcinogens. Because of these findings, PBDEs were banned in some countries and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Effects Of Malnutrition On Educational Disparities The Impact of Malnutrition on Educational Disparities in Africa By: Merette Khalil and Blessing Kuebee, African Students Association At the start of the millennium, various United Nations (UN) partners came together to tackle some of the world s deadliest and most pressing social and economic problems, and in doing so, established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the past 15 years, the MDGs have been evaluated and re evaluated. This year the UN has declared a new set of 17 goals for the next 15 years called the Sustainable Development Goals. The first issue on both agendas is the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, a problem that is specifically significant for the entire continent of Africa. Clarifying a few terms based on the World Food Program s definition is essential to understanding the scope of the problem. Hunger is not having enough to eat to meet energy requirements. It can lead to malnutrition, which is a condition when one s diet does not provide adequate nutrients for growth and maintenance or when a person is not able to adequately utilize the food consumed due to illness. Undernutrition, being nutrient deficient, being underweight and even being overweight are all complications that result from hunger. Undernourishment is when a person is not able to acquire enough food to meet the daily minimum dietary energy requirements, over a period of one year. • 34. My Experience In Counselling My first experience with counselling was when I was roughly 17 years old. Back then I was a part of the people who believed in the myths surrounding counselling, back then it was my last option but I can still look back and say that I took that decision on my own and I was prepared to face resistance which I did, in the form of my parents who thought that it was an option for people who had gone mad . Overcoming these resistances I finally went ahead for counselling and to my absolute disappointment, the sessionwas useless and at times even offensive to me. The counsellor asked me my age and started telling a long list of problems I may be facing. She didn t stop there and then asked me about my weight and any problems that I may be having... This issue has prompted me to go to personal therapy and also has increased the relevance and importance of personal therapy in my eyes. Through this experience I have also realised how unresolved issues in the past can impact the counselling process with or without you being aware about them. There are many areas that I need to work on expect this and the major among them is my competence as a counsellor, I still need to develop various professional skills that I will be required to employ in the counselling session and that is something I believe I will gain from my course. The most important thing that believe I need to work on are my own beliefs about counselling, for a long time I didn t realise that despite being trained for becoming a counsellor I never realised that even to me counselling seemed appropriate as the last option, a choice you make when all else fails and also that with time things will eventually get better and you don t need therapy to work through it. Both of these beliefs seem wrong to be now that I have gained more objective knowledge of counselling. Firstly, to keep counselling as a last resort the person is embracing a very likely possibility that things would get worse then on rather than better and if proper therapy is undertaken at the very beginning of a problem it will improve things for the individual for definite and may also be more effective and efficient in comparison to if you let it blow to proportion that may severely ... • 35. The End Of Remembering And Susan Griffin s Our Secret Memory what it is, how it works, and how it might be manipulated has long been a subject of curious fascination. Remembering, the mind boggling ability in which the human brain can conjure up very specific, very lucid, long gone episodes from any given point on the timeline of our lives, is an astounding feat. Yet, along with our brain s ability of remembrance comes also the concept of forgetting: interruptions of memoryor an inability of consciousness to make present to itself what it wants (Honold, 1994, p. 2). There is a very close relationship between remembering and forgetting; in fact, the two come hand in hand. Susan Griffin, a feminist writer and finalist for the Pulitzer Price in non fiction, explores the concept of forgetting in her chapter Our Secret . Unlike Foer, Griffin (1992) doesn t seem to be too much a fan of remembering, describing memory to be like a long, half lit tunnel, a tunnel where one is likely to encounter phantoms of a self, long concealed, no longer nourished with the force of consciousness, existing in a tortured state between life and death (p. 258). In fact, Griffin might argue that there are several benefits to forgetting, and that the collective memories of a traumatic past should not be remembered or preserved. Failure to retrieve memories may not always be a bad thing, in fact, unwanted memories of childhood trauma, emotional rejection, or any of life s inevitable disappointments have the ability to torment and mentally exhaust a person. Throughout her essay, Griffin explores the hidden shame and pains that several characters carry, herself included, and the consequences they bring. She writes of one woman s memories of the cold war, who, as a young child, witnessed shoes in great piles. Bones. Women s hair, clothes, stains, a terrible odor , all of which left her sobbing and screaming in fear (Griffin, 1992, p. 233). Another gruesome account Griffin (1992) writes of, is as ... Violence and pain were perhaps the most avant garde elements of Ernst s art, and this perception is on full display in one of Ernst collages displayed during Breton s Paris Au Sans Pareil exhibition, The Preparation of Bone Glue. It depicts a diathermy process in which an electrical current treats joint ailments (Kavky 2012); his use of violence and pain as both cause and cure intensifies the victimization of the woman (Kavky 2012). The Preparation of Bone Glue is widely considered as an early example of Surrealist art, and Ernst s early work with the mentally ill provided significant influence into the troubled minds of some patients. • 48. Of Mice And Men By Robert Burns The title of this book is actually comes from a poem To a Mouse , which is written in Scots dialect, by the 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns. It is about a mouse which carefully builds a winter nest in a wheat field, but it was destroyed by a ploughman. The mouse had dreamed of a safe and warm winter but now it have to face the harsh reality of cold, loneliness and possible death. This is relevant to the novel Of Mice and Men in two ways. First, the characters in the story are seem to be at the mercy of fate, almost as powerless as mice. For example, Lennie can be likened to the mouse in the poem by his harmless, innocent, gentle, and childlike characteristics since he has just as weak as a mouse. Second, it is actually related to one of the major themes in the novel which is the shattered dreams. Lennie and George are migrant farm workers who dream of having their own home and land, but this dream is wrecked, just like the mouse s nest in the poem. The poem also demonstrates that future is unpredictable, which is related to the story that people cannot control their life and fate is uncertain. Moreover, the Men in the title could refer to the common men who work on the ranch such as Slim, Candy, George and Lennie. They are laborers who have simple desires, which is they want to obtain their own land, so that they may work for themselves and obtain independence. Jennifer Egan s A Visit from the Goon Squad mainly presents the theme of ruin and redemption throughout the novel. This theme is present alongside with other minor themes like the shift of American culture, and how the characters self centered ways are crush by time. All of the major characters will find themselves at some sort of low point in their lives throughout the novel. Jocelyn becomes addicted to drugs and spends a great amount of her adult life going in and out of rehab; Benny will lose his record label contract and will be seen as a failure by most of those still in the industry; and Sasha will show falling into ruin due to her stealing addiction, self isolation from family, and lack of self love. The idea of ruin and redemption is also present alongside the characters setting. Theses characters live in a post 9/11 New York City , where the towers are destroyed, the streets and rivers are polluted, and surveillance is amplified, making New York City reflect this theme in a mournful way. The same for the story Goodbye, My Love , Ted goes to Italy, and notes the ways Naples is degrading. Theses images of ruin, that the characters are consciousness of, are a representation of ruin in their own lives. Despite the self destruction that each character faces throughout the novel, a counterbalance for the self destruction is created when a sense of redemption is introduced. Two of the stories main ...
