Right now, right at this very instant, a silent war all across the nation is being waged. A violation
of humanity, a crime that is least prosecuted, and a great threat endangering the lives of thousands
of women and children daily. Of course, I am talking about harsh reality of domestic violence. We
live in a time where domestic violence is kept a taboo subject, a shameful secret that shouldn t be
let out. We know it s happening, and even hear or see the events. But who s taking action?
I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic?
Sadly enough, people look at this endless crime as just a figure or percentage, we re shocked at
first but nothing more. So today, I am taking the first step, a step towards justice, a step to end the
struggle, and a step to save our nation.
And yes, I m not anyone special, I don t study the topic, nor am I a survivor of domestic violence
myself. But I m here to tell a story. I m here to make a change. And I m here to encourage all of
you to do the same.
I m going to share an experience I had. Something that I ve regretted and hated myself for since,
knowing that help could ve been sought earlier. A few years back, I was catching up with a
family member and noticed a faint bruise on her face. Naturally, I asked her what had happened
but she just brushed it off, told me it was nothing but a sport injury. Weeks progressed, and the
bruises became worse and worse, but I stop questioning. To me, she still seemed the happy go
lucky girl I knew and loved, the only difference were these markings. But let me tell you,
sometimes the people who seem happiest, are actually hurting the most. And this was exactly the
case. Flashforward a few months, and her partner was being trialled and charged under the case of
domestic abuse.
Although there were so many signs, my ignorance restrained me from helping her help herself.
Needless to say, I was absolutely disgusted. And to this day, I still can t even begin the fathom how

This Small Town Means Business: Improving Local Economy When you grow up in a small town
the one thing that is the most difficult to withstand is boredom. At least, that s how it is for the
youth of the area. However, when you look at it from an older and more mature perspective you
might realize that the main issue with some small towns is job availability, as well as the town s
revenue for different projects, etc. Recently my hometown has been undertaking a few different
projects that will really benefit the area and it s economy. The youth league softball program has
grown tremendously within the past few years. Due to that improvement, Sallisaw was chosen to
host a state tournament. Which was wonderful until we realized that our softball complex was not
best suited for a tournament of this magnitude. This is when talk began on building an entirely new
sports complex for all of the youth league sports in the area. One other issue arose through hosting
this tournament. Out of sixty three teams who were in the tournament last summer, only one team
stayed in Sallisaw. The rest of the teams were sent to stay in hotels here in Fort Smith, all because
the hotels that are located in Sallisaw did not have an indoor swimming pool. The teams would
rather make a thirty minute commute than stay in a hotel that does not have a swimming pool. The
next project Sallisaw is undertaking is bringing in a well known hotel

Stephen R. Covey writes that there is not a greater investment to grow in new habits, and he
invites his readers to study these habits and be patient with ourselves. I like that he writes, be
patient with ourselves, because we are people that are not perfect and we cannot achieve that
perfection in ourselves. The first two habits are, Be Proactive and Begin with the End in Mind. Both
of these habits are about moving from independence to interdependence that focus mainly on our
choices or mastering your thoughts. I like Covey s statement, I am responsible for me, and I can
choose.
Proactive
When I first thought of proactive, it meant to recall all of the scenarios that may come up so that
I may be ready. Actually, this is how Covey uses his right brain, in imaging all the things that can
go wrong and dreaming up ways to help. This is natural for me to meditate this way. However,
this kind of proactive can create worry and keep me up late over visualizing. I prefer praying and
sitting with Jesus, because it is impossible to come up with everything alone in my own head and
this causes too much work. I believe in working with a team and what comes to each of us in a
situation is valuable and ideas that could only come from someone who ruminates different that I
