Traditional Herbal Medicines Used For The Treatment Of...
Radix Paeoniae Alba (RPA), a well known Chinese herbal, ( Bai Shao in Chinese) has been widely
used in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. It is made from the root of P. lactiflora after boiling
in water and peeling off the bark (China Pharmacopoeia Committee, 2010). Its constituents have been
recognized as valuable traditional herbal medicines used for the treatment of diseases with a long
history in TCM (Fang et al., 2009). Empirical evidence suggests that various peony root preparations
have broad therapeutic benefits for pain, muscle spasm, inflammation, menstrual dysfunction, and
neurodegenerative disorders, stroke (Wu 1985; Wu et al. 2010; Guo et al.2012). These therapeutic
benefits are believed to be mainly derived from its major constituents that possess multiple
pharmacological properties, in particular neuroprotective effects. To date, more than 15 constituents
have been identified from this Chinese herbal material, including the isomers paeoniflorin (PF) and
albiflorin (AF), are the main representative monoterpene glycosides (structures see Fig. 1). Figure 1
The structures of albiflorin and paeoniflorin. The loss of neurological functions is caused by massive
loss of neurons resulting from stress reaction and other reasons. Up to now, several hypotheses have
been put forward, such as Ca2+ overload, oxidative injury, excitotoxicity, protein misfolding,
apoptosis (). A complex interplay between different factors and signal cascades results in neuronal cell

Media And Gender Roles In The Media
At a young age, children begin to comprehend gender roles, which are a set of societal norms that
determine what is considered acceptable, desirable and appropriate based on an individual s sex. We
obtain these gender associated roles from various places and one dominant source with direct
influence is the media. Media plays a critical role in influencing gender roles through impacting the
career choices we make, the behavioral patterns we implement in our lives and the sexual stereotypes
we have been conditioned to accept. In the first place, society has grown to associate certain
occupations with a particular gender. One reason this occurs is as a result of mass media displaying a
certain gender occupying a particular job position more than the other genders. Females are often
displayed on television, magazines and internet sources as occupying positions such as housewives,
nurses, receptionists and teachers. On the other hand, males are portrayed in roles such as the family s
breadwinner, doctors and principles. For example, in the show I Love Lucy , Lucy is a housewife
looking to escape her domesticated lifestyle. In the process of doing so her ventures quickly turn to
antics, leaving husband Ricky, who is the family s breadwinner, to correct the mess she creates (Rosie
357). Similarly, in another show called Our Miss Brooks , Miss Brooks is a teacher who battles with a
bossy school principal, Mr. Conklin. These two sitcoms present females in positions with less

A Reflection On The Lost Palace Of Sparta
A REFLECTION ON MY NEWS STORY
When I googled on the Internet about a news story relating to Classical Studies, I happened to found
an interesting article on The Lost Palace of Sparta Possibly Uncovered in Live Science. My main
reason for choosing this news story was because I have always been interested in Late Bronze Age
Mycenaean
Civilization, since Mycenaean culture appears to be connected with Homer s Iliad s Trojan War.
Secondly, I took a course on Classical Archaeology as an undergraduate student in Classics.
Therefore, I studied the nineteenth century archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann and his excavation of
Agamemnon s palace and his gold mask at Mycenae inspired me very much. For me, the most striking
aspect of my news story was the Linear B tablets found on the site. Ghose (2015) stated that the
inscriptions represented the earliest form of the Greek language. Although the fire baked the tablets,
the fascinating writings on these Linear B tablets discussed clearly the centralized distribution of
goods like wool and grain, noted (Killgrove 2015). These inscriptions on the Linear B tablets give the
readers a history of palatial events in the Mycenaean period.
Yes, I was thinking about doing an article from the Ottawa Citizen about Ancient Menoral Roman
Treasure, but I did not know very much about the Gothic King Alaric. Therefore, I chose The Lost
Palace of Sparta Possibly Uncovered instead, because I have studied Homer s Iliad, Classical
Archaeology,

Emma Watson Research Paper
Emma Watson is a 27 year old British actress who has starred in movies like the Harry Potter series,
The Perks of Being a Wallflower and most recently Beauty and the Beast. Not only is an amazing
actress but she is a strong supporter of women s rights and equality. She spends most of her time,
when she wasn t being Hermione Granger, being a U.N. Women s ambassador. She was appointed this
position in the July of 2014. Emma started the #HeforShe campaign which was a gender equality
movement that ended up becoming very popular. She has encouraged men to join in of the fight

I chose Emma for this essay because of how strong she is. Even after all of the backlash her
#HeforShe campaign got, she continued to do what she felt was right. That is one trait we have in
common. No matter how much someone talked about her or said something harsh about her
movements, she persisted. Also, she isn t someone who is constantly in the spotlight, she would rather
be in the background making changes. A lot of celebrities talk about wanting to make changes in today
s society but most of them never DO anything, they just TALK about how they WISH they could do
something. Emma decided that she wasn t going to say anything, she was gonna make the changes
first and do all the talking later. I look up to her as a feminist. She is helping America become equal
one step at a time and I couldn t thank her enough. I m a feminist because I ve known sexism since I
was eight years old , said Emma during her first speech as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. She has
been in the limelight since she was nine years old with her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry

Personal Narrative-Fair Job Analysis
From the New Year approaching, and I am still looking for work in the state. This week the most
important thing is Tuesday s job fair. I got my resume ready early, and I got to know more interested
companies. Before the job fair, I was fortunate enough to have received a phone call from a company
that had previously voted on the talent website and was invited to attend the interview. I went to an
early education institution, the interviewer is very friendly, briefly describes some of their company s
situation, as well as the main work content. I also asked the most concerned about the issue, and one
by one to be answered. But this institution is often a night shift, which is inconvenient for me, home at
night will be more dangerous, the interviewer also expressed understanding, and let me go home to
ask the views of parents, give them back. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

professional counterparts, but I think all things as long as the learning can be completed, as long as

Brick Lane Mosque In The 19th Century
Brick Lane Mosque, similarly to other mosques across the globe, displays non existent segregationist
attitudes and is open to the public regardless of taste and social class. This is further emphasised
through the cultural and religious practices of the Muslims in the mosque, referring to each other as
brothers and sisters , indicating zero arrogance or ignorance though social status. This is due to the
primary belief which binds each agent, which is, in this case, the followers of Islam, who despite taste
and social class, share one invaluable thing in common... religion.
However, despite Brick Lane Mosque being a place of worship for the followers of Islam and serving
as a place where Muslims can come together and perform acts of devotion,

Example Of Pyramid System
A hierarchical system in a company does not allow for growth within that company, along with not
utilizing every employees skills. A system related to this will typically look a pyramid an owner on
top, then trickles down to vice president, CFO s, COO s, then continuing with positions along the lines
of, general manager, assistant manager, and shift manager. Towards the bottom of a pyramid system
will be your full time employees and if you have part time employees they might be even lower.
Pyramid system was used in the article Pyramids and Pancakes by Michael Lewis, which Lewis seems
to imply that a pyramid system is an unpleasant work environment for employees towards the bottom.

Therefore the bosses do not apply everyone s strengths, which would enable more growth. Instead a
pyramid system, bosses make the decisions on what is right and what is wrong, or what the employees
should or should not do for the company. An example of a pyramid system preventing workers from
doing good work is a journalist, named Suarez, who ultimately ended up hating his job because of the
boss and the profit hungry people in charge. In Good Work, Well Done: A Psychological Study by
Howard Gardner, Suarez, who was a journalist for a pyramid system was incharge of a story about the
dangers of video games. However, Suarez soon discovers that there is little truth to this story and does
not want to continue to write the story. When Suarez tried to abandon the story, Gardner explains
Suarez had tried to get out of covering the story, but his boss insisted that he go on and file it (4).

company however, he demands Suarez to cover a story about video games being harmful to kids,

My Local Organic Farming Community
For the past few years I ve slowly started getting involved with my local organic farming community
to learn pressing issues young farmers face. I almost immediately notice that Sonoma County, which
is quite a large, has extremely knowledgeable leaders on the topic of food politics. Furthermore, I
found these people are generous and living an organic local lifestyle. Aside from the given importance
of eating local and healthy, there are two major factors which make it critical for me to learn and eat
organic foods.
I have special needs nephew named Lucas you must eat organically. In fact, all his food is measured
and blended to get the proper nutrients and enough calories for the day. He is quite sensitive to food,

Shortly after getting involved with local Farmers Guild, which now has 11 chapters, I realized the dire
importance to spread the word and message about the future of young farmers. The typical American
farmer is over 57, white and male; he often has no succession plan. One of my clients, Larry Peter the
Owner of Petaluma Creamery worked in agriculture as a young man picking prunes and raspberries.
He washed milk bottles; bottle fed calves, and drove a forklift for ten years while he learned the
business. He saved his money, bought run down houses, fixed them up, and rented them out. In doing
research, I found farmers and ranchers earned a median annual income of nearly $61,000 in 2010,
according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. (1) Seven of the 10 best paying U.S. cities for
farmers were in California, ranking at $80,0000 $87,000 annually. According to a recent report
commissioned by the USDA, there will be 20,000 fewer university graduates in the fields of
agriculture and the environment than will be needed in just the next five years. In order to feed 9
billion people by 2050, we will need a diverse population of agriculture researchers who can think
outside the hectare and leverage the experience of nontraditional learners including veterans, refugees
from rural backgrounds, migrant farmworkers and female farm owners. (5)

The Advanced Practice Nurse Is On The Front Lines Of Care
The advanced practice nurse is on the front lines of care being received or falling short within their
community. By having direct asses to the success and failures of health care in the community, the
advanced practice nurse (APN) can be the voice of patient to the officials having an impact on health
care accessibility. The purpose of this paper is to address a current problem by evaluating multiple
influencing factors and investigate a policy capable of changing and providing a more positive
outcome.
Problem Identification
Men and women serve in the United States armed forces in hopes of receiving the promise of a
dependable income and reliable benefits. The primary influence for those joining the armed forces is
tuition reimbursement followed by health care benefits (Clever, Segal, 2013). The majority of enlisted
military only serve for seven years and often work in minimum wage jobs without health insurance
after departing from the military. Before the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, veterans
could only utilize veteran hospitals and outpatient clinics for military related health problems (United
States Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). Once the Affordable Care Act was initiated, all veterans
could utilize veteran medical services for any of their health care needs. The problem needing to be
addressed is the number of veteran facilities available to provide treatment for the vast amount of
veterans now qualified for medical services.

The Battle Of The Civil War
It was a group of radical Republicans and southern Democrats in 1865 that set the tone for one of the
most infamous and earlier gridlock stories in Congress. After the assignation of Abraham Lincoln,
Andrew Johnson became president and the dispute incurred over how to fix the country. The Civil War
had left the country with insurmountable damage and Congress could not agree on how to rectify the
situation. Northern Republicans wanted to open voting rights to former slaves, which is exactly what
the southern Democrats did not want. These Republicans, wanting to get more votes, passed two
voting right pieces of legislation, which Johnson vetoes. Thus begins not only gridlock in Congress,
but also attempted impeachment of Andrew Jackson. Gridlock is brought about by valid and
meaningful pieces of legislations that both major political parties cannot agree to instate and while
Congress may not agree to pass it, most often it is the citizens that suffer. (Browning)
There are various reasons for Congress to achieve gridlock. Wikipedia defines congressional gridlock
as, a situation when there is difficulty in passing laws that satisfy the needs of the people... when the
ration between bill s passed and the agenda of the legislature decreases. (Wikipedia) Sarah Binder
writer for Brookings states, Alexander Hamilton was complaining more than two centuries ago about
the deadlock rooted in the design of the Continental Congress. In many ways, gridlock is endemic to

Herpevac Trial Essay
The Herpevac trial was a randomized, double blind study done by Belshe et. al (2012) was conducted
on HSV 1 and HSV 2 seronegative women. The trial consisted of a HSV 2 vaccine (GlaxoSmithKline)
containing a glycoprotein D from the virus verses an inactivated hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix,
GlaxoSmithKline) as the control. This trial was used to test the theory of two other HSV 2 vaccine
tests among discordinant couples. The Herpevac vaccine was inept against the virus after two doses of
the vaccine, with an overall efficacy of 20%. Despite being ineffectual against HSV 1 and HSV 2, the
vaccine did provide some protection against infection. However, this protective effect was observed
mainly with HSV 1, not with HSV 2. HSV 2 antibodies were detected after the second dose of the
vaccine, but fell to undetectable levels by the 6 month of the study. A third dose was administered; the
levels were detectable again, but fell soon to undetectable ranges soon after. Another study done by
Delgrave et. al (2012) studied the efficacy of using ACAM529, a replication defective vaccine against
HSV 2 administered intramuscularly instead of a subcutaneous injection or intradermal injection.

Racial Segregation Research Paper
Racial segregation in the United States continued even after the Civil War, in the form of laws
requiring separation of people by race and in the form of ubiquitous discrimination and widespread
social resistance to integration. But even during the height of racial segregation and discrimination,
people in the performing arts pushed their audiences to reconsider their prejudices and assumptions
regarding classification and disparate treatment of people based on race. Broadway s and Hollywood s
most famous musical theater writing team, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein Jr., both
reflected and powerfully commented upon these racial tensions in two of their most famous musicals:

This show differed from the King and I in many ways, including the fact that the first couple shown in
the show traveled to Vanuatu together instead of meeting there. South Pacific was considered by many
to be Rodgers and Hammerstien s greatest show, winning a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1950 as well as
10 Tony awards (The Broadway League), (Broadway Across America). This Show, thanks to its
immense popularity in the 1950 s and 60 s, had two revivals, including one starring TV stars Kelli O

The Importance Of Race In The Film Slumdog Millionaire
If you can do nothing else, do whatever is in your power to make the people in your life feel
completely unashamed of who they are (Killermann). As times change and our society continues to
evolve, the importance of human rights and acceptance are constantly emphasized. Through the
movie, Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle I learned about discrimination relating to social
class. Additionally, in the song, Small Town Boy by Bronski Beat, I learned about how gay individuals
may be judged by society. Through further analyzing and exploring these texts, I could seek real life
examples of how human rights can be violated. These texts prove that we must move away from the
deep rooted issue of discrimination and learn to accept, love, and celebrate our differences not only as
individuals but as a society.
In Danny Boyle s movie, Slumdog Millionaire , the use of pathos allows readers to understand how
discrimination relating to social class is a real issue. The movie follows the life of a Muslim boy
named Jamal, living in a Hindu environment. Jamal decides to participate in an Indian game show and
has made it to the final round that could win himself one million dollars. As the audience settles down
and the question is announced, the game show host turns to Jamal and says, Do the right thing in
approximately three minutes and you will be as famous as me. And as rich as me. Almost (Boyle).

How To Write An Essay About Jaycee Dugard s Kidnapping
Jaycee Lee Dugard was an average 11 year old girl in fifth grade. While she was walking to her bus
stop on a June day a car came up beside her and a man and woman jumped out and grabbed her.
Jaycee Dugard s conflict with her kidnapping teaches the reader how to overcome any obstacle
through her strength and desire to live a normal life after being discovered 18 years later with two
daughters. Jaycee was kidnapped in 1991 by a man and his wife at the age of 11. She was put through
rapes, and unusual living situations for 18 years. Unlike most kidnappings that society knows, Jaycee
was never abused other than the rapes. Her kidnappers, Phillip and Nancy never mentally or
physically abused her. They wanted to keep her happy so that she wouldn t try to escape or rebel
against them. But as an 11 year old girl it was hard for Jaycee to be happy. Her life became her being
handcuffed and laying on a bed naked for hours or days on end. Eventually Phillip would ... Show

She did this only in hopes to get out alive. I had plenty of practice keeping calm and unaffected on the

her true feelings on anything, all so that she could protect her daughters and herself.
Jaycee now celebrates the fact that she is free and that she lives the almost average life she pictured

the life she has now. She is working on improving herself, and trying to be the best mother that she

The World Of Aboriginal And Or Torres Strait Islander...
Five hundred words gives very limited opportunity to delve into the complex world of Aboriginal
and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. I will be as broad as possible and I have not referenced any
websites or books. This is sourced from my general knowledge and experiences and from speaking
with people who are more familiar with the Aboriginal culture than me over the years. Quite simply,
until (relatively) recent years the Aboriginal culture has been largely unrepresented in Tasmania. There
are recent improvements, for example members of State Government will sometimes acknowledge the
traditional owners or an elder may give a welcome to country at events. When white man colonised
Tasmania they massacred the local tribes where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, a result of this is that general society in Tasmania is broadly more tolerant and sympathetic to the
plight of the Aboriginal culture because they are not exposed to the confrontational issues found in
many parts of Australia. There is therefore a sense of indifference around the Aboriginal culture which
has two angles. Firstly, an Aboriginal child is far less likely to be discriminated against (based on their
culture) because they are more easily accepted without prejudice or preconception as happens in other
parts of Australia. Secondly, and sadly, because they are more easily accepted on a level footing as any
other child their cultural identity can be ignored. I am not aware of any attending Aboriginal children
in the Centre that I am planning on doing my placement. While I understand the importance of the
Aboriginal culture in Australia, I believe that if an Aboriginal child starts attending the Centre then
their cultural direction should be managed as it would be with any other child from a certain culture in
close liaison with their parents. From experience I know that some (urban assimilated) Aboriginal
families are embarrassed about their recent culture (ie after colonisation) and in particular the issues
around, for example, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and petrol sniffing and how their culture is
viewed by white man. It should not be assumed that just because a child is Aboriginal they should be
treated in any way

Comparison Of Harper s Weekly And Time Magazine
Have you ever thought about what people back in the day read in their spare time since we all just
immediately get on our phones? I compared and contrasted the August 2015 Time magazine, and the
June 4th 1864 edition of Harper s Weekly. I have come to the realization that when people say times
have changed, they are not kidding. It is crazy to read in between the lines and see how Americans
lived over 150 years ago. The way things are placed and discussed are very different in both Harper s
Weekly and Time Magazine, but the two are similar in some ways also.
Although there are many differences between the two, there are some similarities. I found that both
have an article or two about foreign countries. By having these articles this means that Americans
have always been interested in what other countries are up to. For example, in Time Magazine on page
11 there is an article written by Julia Zorthian that talks about Brazil turning against their president,
and the antigovernment rallies. Another example in Time Magazine is on page 40 and it talks about
the explosion that happened in a chemical warehouse in Tianjin, China. They said that this explosion
is a symbol of the way others look at China. The covers on both of the magazines are pictures of
political figures that are impacting and did impact Americans in the United States. In Time Magazine

Dorothea Lange Migrant Mother Summary
In the article, Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother, and the Culture of the Great Depression by James C.
Curtis, we understand what it takes to get the perfect photo to represent a message. Dorothea Lange
became very popular during her time and is known especially for her photo, Migrant Mother, which
documents life during the Great Depression. James C. Curtis does a good job explaining the artistic
decisions to this most famous shot and how many different steps Lange took in order to really create a
powerful message depicting life in poverty. Curtis begins this article by describing how Lange was a
little different from traditional documentary photographers. Tradition was honesty, directness, and a
lack of manipulation. Lange and other influential photographers like Walker Evans, knew that they
had to document life with a purpose but in order to really convey their message they had to include
artistic elements. Aesthetic was an important part of her work, she wanted her photos to have an
artistic value which could help capture the universal struggle of those living in poverty. In order to do
this she had to do many different shots with different angles, different positions of the subjects, and
sometimes including or excluding certain sitters. For example the teenage daughter of the family was
excluded in some of the photos because it presented awkward questions. According to Curtis, While
middle class viewers were sympathetically disposed to the needs of impoverished

Domestic Violence and Social Problems
Domestic violence is a devastating social problem that impacts every sector of our population.
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to
gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner(USDOJ,2012). Domestic violence
can be physical, economic, emotional, sexual, or psychological. Physical domestic violence is an
attempt to impose physical injury such as grabbing, slapping, hitting, biting, etc. Physical violence can
also be withholding necessary resources to sustain health such as medication, food, sleep, or forcing
alcohol or other drug use. Economic abuse is an attempt to make the victim financially dependent.

Children who encounter domestic violence face increased risk of exposure to traumatic events. These
risks may include neglect, being directly abused, losing one or both of their parents. At birth, a baby s
brain is 25% of its adult weight, increasing to 66% by the end of the first year due to the brain growth
spurt which occurs between the seventh prenatal month and the child s first birthday. The developing
brain is the most vulnerable to the impact of traumatic experiences during this time. New research on
the brain development suggests that exposure to extreme trauma will change the organization of the
brain, resulting in difficulties in dealing with stress later in life(NSW, 2002). Exposure to domestic
violence can subject children to pervasive traumatic stress which leads to Post traumatic Stress
Disorder also known as PTSD. Post traumatic stress disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. It can occur
after you have gone through an extreme emotional trauma that involved the threat of injury or death.
Summarizing several studies, Rossman and colleagues report that 13 50% of youth exposed to
interparental violence qualify for diagnosis of PTSD (NCBI,2007). Each child responds differently to
trauma, some may be rigid and not exhibit negative effects. In 2011, child protective services received
3.4 million referrals, over 75 percent suffered from neglect which is one of the effects from children
exposed to domestic violence. The National Comorbidity Survey

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Sharing System
The development situation of sharing system
Sharing system ,which was a brand new concept appeard in 2015 has already become a fashionable
life style. Most people, especially those in first tier cities may have an intensive feeling that sharing

The Impact Of Emperor Titus On The Roman Empire
Throughout the period of Roman emperors, there were many good emperors who brought wealth and
prosperity, but there were bad emperors who brought terror and poverty. Emperor Titus Augustus was
one of the emperors who brought wealth and prosperity. He had one of the most popular rules, even
though he only ruled for about 3 years. He was, also, nicknamed the darling of the human race by
Suetonius (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Although Emperor Titus had a short rule, he
brought wealth and prosperity, thus making his rule have a positive impact on the Roman Empire.
To begin, Titus was born in 39 A.D. His father, Vespasian, was a high ranking military official at the
time. Titus early life consisted of serving in his father s legion. After the evil emperor Nero died,
Vespasian was anointed emperor of Rome. Vespasian then gave Titus charge of the Jewish war and his
legion. Titus successfully captured and destroyed Jerusalem in September of A.D. 70. To
commemorate Titus glorious victory, an arch was built, which is now known as the Arch of Titus.
After that victory, Titus was made Praetorian Guard by his father and they became close in ranks, but
Vespasian avoided putting Titus on an equal rank as him. From then until the end of Vespasian s reign,
they worked closely and peacefully. The early life of Titus included serving and commanding under
his father s legions and serving as a Praetorian Guard.
Then, when Vespasian died on June 23rd, 79 A.D. Titus immediately

The Benefits Of Attending College After High School
College After High School Every young adult knows the importance of getting an education. The
future holds many opportunities, including a job that one can excel in and enjoy. Some people think
that those who go to school waste their life on furthering their education, but who have longer lasting
jobs and a bigger paycheck? According to The College Board Organization, going to college will let
you explore various jobs and help find the career path that fits you (College: What It s About). College
gives someone the chance to be more independent and social. College sets a realistic plan for goals,
making dreams more achievable and attainable (Beckstead). Attending college after high school
expands your knowledge, helps the transition to adulthood, and prepares you for the future. Trying to
stay motivated and on track after high school is hard. But going to college, keeps you on track and
gives a reason to apply yourself. People who get a college degree are more productive to society (Is
College Worth It?). More than half of college graduates donate blood compared to high school
graduates (Is College Worth It?). Bureau Labor of Statistics found that 43% of the 2008 2009 college
graduates volunteered. While only 19% of high school graduates volunteered (Is College Worth It?).
Also some college graduates specialize in certain fields which are necessary for society. For example,
the medical field provides us with services like doctors and dentists. People without a college

MERCURY ATHLETIC FOOTWEAR
Problem statement:
West Coast Fashions, Inc a large business of men s and women s apparel decided to dispose of one of
their segments; Mercury Athletic. John Liedtke, head of the business development for Active Gear, Inc
saw it has a possible opportunity for them to acquire it. The footwear industry is very competitive,
with low growth and stable profit margins. AGI is very profitable but it is smaller than its competitors,
which is becoming a disadvantage. Therefore, Liedtke believes that if they takeover Mercury will

It is important to look at it because it is a measure that investors can use to evaluate the financial
health of the company. However Liedkte being more conservative he says that the combined
businesses could achieve and EBIT of 9 % and when looking at the projections for Mercury from
2007 2011 we can see a growth in earnings. So then what are the cash flows if Liedtke thinks the
combined businesses will have a revenue growth of 2% in year 2011 considering we discounting back
to 2006. We need to calculate the Free Cash Flow (FCF) in order to determine if the Net profit Value is
positive or negative. Knowing that we will know if the acquisition should be undertaken. When
looking at the excel sheet we can see that the NVP using the discount rate given by the case 7.65 %

value of the investment made today to the same value of the amount in the future. So that is the
amount AGI needs to pay up front. The free cash flows are made from the financial statement given in

Historical Context and Performance Reflection of Ocean Alley
Ocean Alley is an ensemble consisting of 6 musicians (guitarist/vocalist, lead guitarist, rhythm
guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and drummer), which was established in 2010 on the Northern Beaches,
Sydney. Ocean Alley is currently touring various local pubs around Sydney and is also going to begin
recording its next EP as of next month. The band encompasses elements of natural, beat driven reggae
as well as various components of psychedelic rock through a large number of inspirations(Alley). This
has given the band a highly diverse, unique sound of psychedelic rock/reggae fusion(Alley). This
review will examine the historical context in which this band has grown from as well as the textural
and structural characteristics in its live performance, as well as in comparison to its studio recordings.
It will focus on the compositions of Yellow Mellow and Freedom Lover to highlight how the use of
texture, density and the fusion of two genres can create a highly distinctive sound that sets them apart
from other ensembles.
One of the main genres that Ocean Alley has embraced is reggae. Reggae is a specific genre created in
Jamaica, formed through heavy rhythmical elements where the rhythm guitar can almost be seen as a
percussion instrument on its own through the use of the expressive technique known as staccato. This,
in combination with distinctive drum and bass rhythmic structures, as well as a particular chord
structure has created a genre that has combined elements of funk,

The Canadian Constitution And The Minimum Wage
INTRODUCTION
The Canadian Constitution is the base for every subject that affect Canadian citizens, permanent
residents and temporary residents as well directly. The Canadian Constitution outlines many topics
including how the government should deal with people in the country and the way that people must
deal with the government. As any other constitution, being a part of the country requires rights and
duties, which the Constitution disposes in its content. It wouldn t be different for the minimum wage.
The Canadian Constitution sets how this matter will be treated and specify that each province should
has its own responsibility for enacts the minimum wage subjects.
Minimum Wage can be a subject of high level of discussions since it affects lots of people and there
are multiple factors that affect how the minimum wage is implemented, measured, and fair. From a
basic perspective, the factors that are included in minimum wage are not well defined as critical
factors, but employability and poorness are some of the main factors that are assessed when the
government of each province decide to increase the minimum wage of the province. During all the
history of minimum wages a bunch of studies were made to analyse the effects that the minimum
wage changes can bring to employee s life. In the oldest studies, the institutions that worked on it
couldn t find a significant change on the employees, job searches and employee s behaviours. The

The Jungle Essay example
The book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair had a major impact on the way the world saw the American
Meat Packing Industry. While Upton Sinclair originally intended to appeal to the public s heart
concerning the conditions and the treatment of workers, it was obvious that the book had more of an
impact on the meat industry. The public was outraged by the stories of waste meat being canned as
wholesome meat, workers falling into vats and being processed as lard, and dead animals being
processed when the inspectors weren t looking. Upton was quoted in saying, I aimed at the public s
heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach (Kantor 1976). The impact that this fictitious novel had,
can still be seen today. After the outrage of hearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On numerous occasions, the packing companies were tried for selling bad products, but the packing
companies always came out on top (Yeager 1906). Many people felt that the trials were unfair and that
the Beef Trust had its hands in the politics that lead to the false innocence of the packing industries
(Yeager 1906). In 1902, Dr. Harvey Wiley created the Division of chemistry, also known as the Poison
Squad. This Division of Chemistry analyzed products that were created by the packing companies.
They looked for any kind of dyes, preservatives, or adulterants that may have been added to the meats.
The Division of Chemistry found, in the numerous products sampled, that the meat was wholesome
and contained no adulterants, dyes, or any preservatives other than the types and amounts that were
allowed. They also inspected meat packing plants to find that the sanitation was acceptable in almost
all cases (Young 1908). The book gave examples of potted ham, which was said to be the waste of
beef or pork. The pieces of meat were too small for any other product so they were gathered together
and made into its own product. Some of the parts included tripe, which were supposedly dyed so that
they would not appear white. Harvey Wiley at first was very pessimistic about this potted meat. Upon
analyzing the product, he found that the meat was indeed wholesome and free of dyes or adulterants

Misconceptions Of Nitrates And Nitrites
The Misconception Concerning Nitrates and Nitrites With new advances in technology and
innovations in the medical field, the implementation of chemicals and preservatives into consumables
has changed the way food is manufactured. Recently, negative light has surrounded the products that
include these additives. More specifically, the consumption of nitrates and nitrites has caught the
attention of many and led to further investigations concerning this topic to decipher the possible health
risks or benefits that can come from their ingestion. The usage of nitrates and nitrites in products has a
negative connotation, however, it only poses a threat in specific conditions, and is otherwise proved to

Nitrates and nitrites are added to processed meat in order to preserve their color and prolong their
shelf life. When exposed to the protein, or amino acids, in these meats, they are capable of forming
compounds called nitrosamines when exposed to high temperatures (Healthy Child Healthy World).
Cooking processed meat creates the perfect conditions for nitrosamines, which can be lethal
carcinogens. More recently, the government has mandated that the manufacturers add Vitamin C,
which inhibits nitrosamine formation (National Center for Biotechnology Information). This shows
that the processed meats being manufactured daily have been regulated to significantly decrease the
probability of the negative effects of chemicals such as nitrate and nitrite. By moderation and
awareness, these issues can easily be avoided and even seem insignificant. An individual could
manage their consumption of meat and choose organic, lean subsitutes, or even consume more

Poverty Between Poverty And Poverty Essay
Poverty in America is severe. One third of our population lives under the poverty line. The poverty
line being a family of three or more surviving on $36,000 or less. This transfers to 20.5 million
people. Seven million of these people being women with children. 6.7% of our population has an
income less than 9,000 for a family of three. These numbers are astounding and they are only on the
rise. This means that more families are going without food. This means more children are starving and
getting sick and dying. One in four families are going without food. This is a huge problem. Everyone
says that poverty is a problem but most people are ignorant to the fact that it is beyond our
comprehension how big it is. Many think it is easily solved just by getting a job. Minimum wage is ten
dollars. Most people living under the poverty line are working minimum wage and struggling to make
ends meet. This now totals 103 million, meaning that one third of the population with an income of
36,000 for a family of three. Out of the 20.5 million, 6 million have no income at all other than food
stamps. As Ronald Reagan s once said, we fought a war with poverty and poverty won. This problem
is so common and widely spread that if you walk outside your door and drive ten minutes you will
find a place where there are homeless people living without a shelter. Just driving to my local grocery
store; two minutes away, there is a homeless camp in the parking lot not too far from the door.

AT T And T-Mobile Merger
Case: AT T and T Mobile Merger
Question 4 :
Should the merger be approved?
The AT T and T Mobile merger should not be approved, as the merger may cause more harm than
benefits to consumers and for the related market. A horizontal practice is one that involves mergers
and activities in the same industry. A horizontal merger comes under Section 7 of Clayton Act and
under Section 2 of Sherman Act, as it would create a monopoly. As AT T and T Mobile both operates
in same industry, the merger is clearly horizontal. The concern with horizontal arrangements is that it
may increase market power, leading to lessened competition and higher prices. Many of interest
groups(like other companies like SprintNextel, the Competitive Carriers Association, Cellular South,
Leap Wireless, MetroPCS, Computer and Communications Industry Association, Yankee Group,
group of seven NGOs including Consumer unions , National Hispanic Media Coalition, Future of
Music Coalition, etc.) opposed. Most of them expressed concerns that the merger will stifle the
competition, may result in increased prices for consumers, will reduce innovation and technological
progress in the field, and it will leave with fewer options for consumers to shop around for cell phone
plans. The decrease in consumer choice happens as the merger will reduce the number of mobile
wireless carrier who has decent nationwide coverage. Consumers Union stated that there is great deal
of data and evidence that this transaction will lead

Self Esteem Leads To Success
How Self Esteem Leads to Success
The strongest factor for success is self esteem: Believing you can do it, believing you deserve it,
believing you can get it. by anonymous. Self esteem is the key to success because without confidence
you lose faith in yourself. Too much confidence can affect your way to success also. Success is being
comfortable with who you are.
According to Meaghan Ramsey in her TED talk Why thinking you re ugly is bad for you she states
that About six out of ten girls are now choosing not to (do the activities that they like) because they
don t think they look good enough . If girls are choosing to give up on what they are good at because
of their appearance, they might think their whole life they are not good enough for any of their
favorite activities, or even what they always dreamed being in the future when they were younger. She
next claims that Thirty one percent, nearly one in three teenagers are withdrawing from classroom
debate. They re failing to engage in classroom debate because they don t want to draw attention to the
way they look. Teens are now being afraid of participating in class because of what they think that
other people judge them. Students shouldn t be failing a class because of how they look, or what other
people think about them. Students should be proud to know the answer to a question and be able to
raise their hand without being afraid. This shows how self esteem affects your way to success.

The Wal-Mart Case
The week one study is about a case that was considered one of the largest lawsuits in United States
History. The United States Supreme Court had to come to a decision on a class act lawsuit between
1,000,000 female Wal Mart employees and their greatly established employer. The discrimination suit
mainly focused on the lack of promotions amongst the plaintiffs and the unequal pay received
compared to their male colleagues. Unfortunately, in this case, despite the statistics generally
exploiting the difference in compensation and advancement amongst the two sexes fell in favor of the
retail giant. The decision was made mainly on plaintiffs lack of ability to demonstrate the
discrimination that each individual encountered while employed with the large retailer. This reflective
paper will look further into the court process, the opinions of a Supreme Court Judge, and the
jurisdiction of the federal court.
During the reading of the Textbook, The Legal Environment of Business, 7th edition , it was
discovered that the U.S. Supreme Court heard this case by it initially being decided by a lower court.

went from optimistic to cynical because of the King s refusal to take action against the French. Instead
of taking action, many viewed James II as becoming like the French monarch. In conjunction with a

feared that James II wanted to change the English government to one modeled after the French
Government. This fear escalated when James II attempted to suspend the test acts by issuing the
Declaration of Indulgence. Although this declaration was supposed to encourage religious tolerance,
many English citizens did not view it that way. They viewed it as treat to the established parliament in
England. This increased fears because many compared James II declaration to Louis XIV s acts when
he invaded the supreme legal authority of France. Because of their fear of being Frenchified, the
English invited the Prince of Orange to invade England, starting the revolution. To justify this action,
Pincus describes it best. He said, English loyalty was primarily to English law and English customs
[national identity] rather than a particular monarch. Since James had violated that law, he ceased to be
an English king and was no longer owed obedience. In the end, the Prince of Orange arrived with the
support of the majority of the English. As a result, James II abdicated and fled to France. The
Nationalist revolution of 1688 1689 had

A Comparison Of Vietnam And Martin Luther King s Speech
War is often seen as a sensitive and debatable topic and one of the most controversial wars to have
ever been fought was the Vietnam War. In Lyndon B, Johnson s Speech on Vietnam (September
29.1967) and Martin Luther King s speech, Why I am opposed to the War in Vietnam we are offered
two different perspectives on this matter. While Johnson provides reasoning on why we should fight
the war, it is King s speech that shows a more compassionate side to Vietnam that I agree with. Kings
speech offered many relevant points but the one that stood out and made me strongly support him was
him pointing out the unfairness that affects American citizens. But it is estimated that we spend
$500,000 to kill each enemy solider, while we spend only fifty three

Life in the Medieval Era Essay
Life in the Medieval Era
Living in the medieval time period was not as glamorous as it is often portrayed; peasants and serfs
led hard lives, however, kings, lords, and knights lived lavishly and at the expense of those under
them. In this paper you will read about all of these lifestyles, as well as the castles in which these lords
and kings lived in. Mainly castle designs, fortifications, and siege tactics will be revealed to you; yet
there are several sections, dealing with the lifestyles of the above mentioned, leading up to that.
The Feudal System
The social structure of the Middle Ages was based on the practice of feudalism. Feudalism meant that
the country was not governed directly by the king, but by individual lords ... Show more content on

The rest of the time the villagers were free to work their own fields.
During the Middle Ages a peasant s life was, indeed, very rough, there were anywhere from ten to
sixty families living in a single village; they lived in rough huts on dirt floors, with no chimneys, or
windows. Usually one end of the hut was given over to storing livestock. Furnishings were quite
sparse; three legged stools, a trestle table, beds softened with straw or leaves and placed on the floor;
the peasant diet was mainly porridge, cheese, black bread, and a few homegrown vegetables. Peasants
had a hard life, yet they did not work on Sundays, and they could travel to nearby fairs and markets.
The basic diet of a lord consisted of meat, fish, pastries, cabbage, turnips, onions, carrots, beans, and
peas, as well as fresh bread, cheese, and fruit. This is by no means equivalent to the meals the peasants
ate, a lord might even feast on boar, swan, or peacock as well.
However both lords and peasants rarely drank water, due to the degree of contaminates in it, instead
they often drank wine or beer. Serfs had neither freedom nor personal possessions and had to ask
permission to be married, for they were bound to a lord for life. A serf could not leave the land under
any circumstances, unless he ran away; if he chose to run to a town and managed to stay there for a
year and a day, he was

Describe 3 features of the structure or organization shared by all three of these types of muscle that tell
you that these tissues ought to be classified as muscle. These should be features found in all types of
muscle but not in any other tissue.
Muscle tissues all have elongated cells.
5. Now compare 3 features of the structure or organization of all three types of muscle that make them
different from each other and easy to identify. You need to describe THREE features and compare
them in ALL types of this tissue. Be sure to compare specific features you have observed as they
appear in all three of these tissues.
The appearance of their cells are all different. Skeletal are unbranched and parallel, smooth are spindle
shaped, and cardiac are branched and connected. They also vary in striations. In skeletal, they are
present and obvious. There are no striations in smooth. The striations are in cardiac but are very faint.
Their nucleus are also different. Skeletal have more than one nucleus. Smooth have just one nucleus
and cardiac varies.
Note: Since this is an exercise based on what you can observe in a microphotograph your descriptions
should involve structure only and not function or location, since these are not observable in these
images. If you use notes or other information from the web site, text, or other resources, be sure you
are writing about something you can actually observe on the

  • 2. Traditional Herbal Medicines Used For The Treatment Of... Radix Paeoniae Alba (RPA), a well known Chinese herbal, ( Bai Shao in Chinese) has been widely used in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. It is made from the root of P. lactiflora after boiling in water and peeling off the bark (China Pharmacopoeia Committee, 2010). Its constituents have been recognized as valuable traditional herbal medicines used for the treatment of diseases with a long history in TCM (Fang et al., 2009). Empirical evidence suggests that various peony root preparations have broad therapeutic benefits for pain, muscle spasm, inflammation, menstrual dysfunction, and neurodegenerative disorders, stroke (Wu 1985; Wu et al. 2010; Guo et al.2012). These therapeutic benefits are believed to be mainly derived from its major constituents that possess multiple pharmacological properties, in particular neuroprotective effects. To date, more than 15 constituents have been identified from this Chinese herbal material, including the isomers paeoniflorin (PF) and albiflorin (AF), are the main representative monoterpene glycosides (structures see Fig. 1). Figure 1 The structures of albiflorin and paeoniflorin. The loss of neurological functions is caused by massive loss of neurons resulting from stress reaction and other reasons. Up to now, several hypotheses have been put forward, such as Ca2+ overload, oxidative injury, excitotoxicity, protein misfolding, apoptosis (). • 3. Media And Gender Roles In The Media At a young age, children begin to comprehend gender roles, which are a set of societal norms that determine what is considered acceptable, desirable and appropriate based on an individual s sex. We obtain these gender associated roles from various places and one dominant source with direct influence is the media. Media plays a critical role in influencing gender roles through impacting the career choices we make, the behavioral patterns we implement in our lives and the sexual stereotypes we have been conditioned to accept. In the first place, society has grown to associate certain occupations with a particular gender. One reason this occurs is as a result of mass media displaying a certain gender occupying a particular job position more than the other genders. Females are often displayed on television, magazines and internet sources as occupying positions such as housewives, nurses, receptionists and teachers. On the other hand, males are portrayed in roles such as the family s breadwinner, doctors and principles. For example, in the show I Love Lucy , Lucy is a housewife looking to escape her domesticated lifestyle. In the process of doing so her ventures quickly turn to antics, leaving husband Ricky, who is the family s breadwinner, to correct the mess she creates (Rosie 357). Similarly, in another show called Our Miss Brooks , Miss Brooks is a teacher who battles with a bossy school principal, Mr. Conklin. These two sitcoms present females in positions with less ... • 4. A Reflection On The Lost Palace Of Sparta A REFLECTION ON MY NEWS STORY When I googled on the Internet about a news story relating to Classical Studies, I happened to found an interesting article on The Lost Palace of Sparta Possibly Uncovered in Live Science. My main reason for choosing this news story was because I have always been interested in Late Bronze Age Mycenaean Civilization, since Mycenaean culture appears to be connected with Homer s Iliad s Trojan War. Secondly, I took a course on Classical Archaeology as an undergraduate student in Classics. Therefore, I studied the nineteenth century archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann and his excavation of Agamemnon s palace and his gold mask at Mycenae inspired me very much. For me, the most striking aspect of my news story was the Linear B tablets found on the site. Ghose (2015) stated that the inscriptions represented the earliest form of the Greek language. Although the fire baked the tablets, the fascinating writings on these Linear B tablets discussed clearly the centralized distribution of goods like wool and grain, noted (Killgrove 2015). These inscriptions on the Linear B tablets give the readers a history of palatial events in the Mycenaean period. Yes, I was thinking about doing an article from the Ottawa Citizen about Ancient Menoral Roman Treasure, but I did not know very much about the Gothic King Alaric. Therefore, I chose The Lost Palace of Sparta Possibly Uncovered instead, because I have studied Homer s Iliad, Classical Archaeology, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Also, she isn t someone who is constantly in the spotlight, she would rather be in the background making changes. One of my clients, Larry Peter the Owner of Petaluma Creamery worked in agriculture as a young man picking prunes and raspberries. He washed milk bottles; bottle fed calves, and drove a forklift for ten years while he learned the business. He saved his money, bought run down houses, fixed them up, and rented them out. In doing research, I found farmers and ranchers earned a median annual income of nearly $61,000 in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to a recent report commissioned by the USDA, there will be 20,000 fewer university graduates in the fields of agriculture and the environment than will be needed in just the next five years. By having direct asses to the success and failures of health care in the community, the advanced practice nurse (APN) can be the voice of patient to the officials having an impact on health care accessibility. The purpose of this paper is to address a current problem by evaluating multiple influencing factors and investigate a policy capable of changing and providing a more positive outcome. Problem Identification Men and women serve in the United States armed forces in hopes of receiving the promise of a dependable income and reliable benefits. The primary influence for those joining the armed forces is tuition reimbursement followed by health care benefits (Clever, Segal, 2013). The majority of enlisted military only serve for seven years and often work in minimum wage jobs without health insurance after departing from the military. Before the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, veterans could only utilize veteran hospitals and outpatient clinics for military related health problems (United States Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). Once the Affordable Care Act was initiated, all veterans could utilize veteran medical services for any of their health care needs. The problem needing to be addressed is the number of veteran facilities available to provide treatment for the vast amount of veterans now qualified for medical services. Background Social ... • 11. The Battle Of The Civil War It was a group of radical Republicans and southern Democrats in 1865 that set the tone for one of the most infamous and earlier gridlock stories in Congress. After the assignation of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson became president and the dispute incurred over how to fix the country. The Civil War had left the country with insurmountable damage and Congress could not agree on how to rectify the situation. Northern Republicans wanted to open voting rights to former slaves, which is exactly what the southern Democrats did not want. These Republicans, wanting to get more votes, passed two voting right pieces of legislation, which Johnson vetoes. Thus begins not only gridlock in Congress, but also attempted impeachment of Andrew Jackson. Gridlock is brought about by valid and meaningful pieces of legislations that both major political parties cannot agree to instate and while Congress may not agree to pass it, most often it is the citizens that suffer. (Browning) There are various reasons for Congress to achieve gridlock. Wikipedia defines congressional gridlock as, a situation when there is difficulty in passing laws that satisfy the needs of the people... when the ration between bill s passed and the agenda of the legislature decreases. • 12. Herpevac Trial Essay The Herpevac trial was a randomized, double blind study done by Belshe et. al (2012) was conducted on HSV 1 and HSV 2 seronegative women. The trial consisted of a HSV 2 vaccine (GlaxoSmithKline) containing a glycoprotein D from the virus verses an inactivated hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix, GlaxoSmithKline) as the control. This trial was used to test the theory of two other HSV 2 vaccine tests among discordinant couples. The Herpevac vaccine was inept against the virus after two doses of the vaccine, with an overall efficacy of 20%. Despite being ineffectual against HSV 1 and HSV 2, the vaccine did provide some protection against infection. However, this protective effect was observed mainly with HSV 1, not with HSV 2. HSV 2 antibodies were detected after the second dose of the vaccine, but fell to undetectable levels by the 6 month of the study. A third dose was administered; the levels were detectable again, but fell soon to undetectable ranges soon after. Another study done by Delgrave et. al (2012) studied the efficacy of using ACAM529, a replication defective vaccine against HSV 2 administered intramuscularly instead of a subcutaneous injection or intradermal injection. Racial Segregation Research Paper Racial segregation in the United States continued even after the Civil War, in the form of laws requiring separation of people by race and in the form of ubiquitous discrimination and widespread social resistance to integration. South Pacific was considered by many to be Rodgers and Hammerstien s greatest show, winning a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1950 as well as 10 Tony awards (The Broadway League), (Broadway Across America). This Show, thanks to its immense popularity in the 1950 s and 60 s, had two revivals, including one starring TV stars Kelli O Hara and Matthew Morrison. As times change and our society continues to evolve, the importance of human rights and acceptance are constantly emphasized. Through the movie, Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle I learned about discrimination relating to social class. Additionally, in the song, Small Town Boy by Bronski Beat, I learned about how gay individuals may be judged by society. Through further analyzing and exploring these texts, I could seek real life examples of how human rights can be violated. These texts prove that we must move away from the deep rooted issue of discrimination and learn to accept, love, and celebrate our differences not only as individuals but as a society. In Danny Boyle s movie, Slumdog Millionaire , the use of pathos allows readers to understand how discrimination relating to social class is a real issue. The movie follows the life of a Muslim boy named Jamal, living in a Hindu environment. Jaycee Dugard s conflict with her kidnapping teaches the reader how to overcome any obstacle through her strength and desire to live a normal life after being discovered 18 years later with two daughters. Jaycee was kidnapped in 1991 by a man and his wife at the age of 11. She was put through rapes, and unusual living situations for 18 years. Unlike most kidnappings that society knows, Jaycee was never abused other than the rapes. Her kidnappers, Phillip and Nancy never mentally or physically abused her. Quite simply, until (relatively) recent years the Aboriginal culture has been largely unrepresented in Tasmania. So, a result of this is that general society in Tasmania is broadly more tolerant and sympathetic to the plight of the Aboriginal culture because they are not exposed to the confrontational issues found in many parts of Australia. There is therefore a sense of indifference around the Aboriginal culture which has two angles. Firstly, an Aboriginal child is far less likely to be discriminated against (based on their culture) because they are more easily accepted without prejudice or preconception as happens in other parts of Australia. Secondly, and sadly, because they are more easily accepted on a level footing as any other child their cultural identity can be ignored. I am not aware of any attending Aboriginal children in the Centre that I am planning on doing my placement. While I understand the importance of the Aboriginal culture in Australia, I believe that if an Aboriginal child starts attending the Centre then their cultural direction should be managed as it would be with any other child from a certain culture in close liaison with their parents. From experience I know that some (urban assimilated) Aboriginal families are embarrassed about their recent culture (ie after colonisation) and in particular the issues around, for example, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and petrol sniffing and how their culture is viewed by white man. The way things are placed and discussed are very different in both Harper s Weekly and Time Magazine, but the two are similar in some ways also. Although there are many differences between the two, there are some similarities. I found that both have an article or two about foreign countries. By having these articles this means that Americans have always been interested in what other countries are up to. Another example in Time Magazine is on page 40 and it talks about the explosion that happened in a chemical warehouse in Tianjin, China. Curtis begins this article by describing how Lange was a little different from traditional documentary photographers. Tradition was honesty, directness, and a lack of manipulation. Lange and other influential photographers like Walker Evans, knew that they had to document life with a purpose but in order to really convey their message they had to include artistic elements. Aesthetic was an important part of her work, she wanted her photos to have an artistic value which could help capture the universal struggle of those living in poverty. In order to do this she had to do many different shots with different angles, different positions of the subjects, and sometimes including or excluding certain sitters. The developing brain is the most vulnerable to the impact of traumatic experiences during this time. New research on the brain development suggests that exposure to extreme trauma will change the organization of the brain, resulting in difficulties in dealing with stress later in life(NSW, 2002). • 32. The Jungle Essay example The book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair had a major impact on the way the world saw the American Meat Packing Industry. While Upton Sinclair originally intended to appeal to the public s heart concerning the conditions and the treatment of workers, it was obvious that the book had more of an impact on the meat industry. The public was outraged by the stories of waste meat being canned as wholesome meat, workers falling into vats and being processed as lard, and dead animals being processed when the inspectors weren t looking. Upton was quoted in saying, I aimed at the public s heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach (Kantor 1976). The impact that this fictitious novel had, can still be seen today. On numerous occasions, the packing companies were tried for selling bad products, but the packing companies always came out on top (Yeager 1906). Many people felt that the trials were unfair and that the Beef Trust had its hands in the politics that lead to the false innocence of the packing industries (Yeager 1906). In 1902, Dr. Harvey Wiley created the Division of chemistry, also known as the Poison Squad. This Division of Chemistry analyzed products that were created by the packing companies. They looked for any kind of dyes, preservatives, or adulterants that may have been added to the meats. The Division of Chemistry found, in the numerous products sampled, that the meat was wholesome and contained no adulterants, dyes, or any preservatives other than the types and amounts that were allowed. They also inspected meat packing plants to find that the sanitation was acceptable in almost all cases (Young 1908). The book gave examples of potted ham, which was said to be the waste of beef or pork. The pieces of meat were too small for any other product so they were gathered together and made into its own product. Some of the parts included tripe, which were supposedly dyed so that they would not appear white. Harvey Wiley at first was very pessimistic about this potted meat. Upon analyzing the product, he found that the meat was indeed wholesome and free of dyes or adulterants (Young 1908). In 1906, the Pure Food and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

More recently, the government has mandated that the manufacturers add Vitamin C, which inhibits nitrosamine formation (National Center for Biotechnology Information). This shows that the processed meats being manufactured daily have been regulated to significantly decrease the probability of the negative effects of chemicals such as nitrate and nitrite. • 35. Poverty Between Poverty And Poverty Essay Poverty in America is severe. One third of our population lives under the poverty line. The poverty line being a family of three or more surviving on $36,000 or less. This transfers to 20.5 million people. Seven million of these people being women with children. 6.7% of our population has an income less than 9,000 for a family of three. These numbers are astounding and they are only on the rise. This means that more families are going without food. This means more children are starving and getting sick and dying. One in four families are going without food. This is a huge problem. Everyone says that poverty is a problem but most people are ignorant to the fact that it is beyond our comprehension how big it is. Many think it is easily solved just by getting a job. Minimum wage is ten dollars. Most people living under the poverty line are working minimum wage and struggling to make ends meet. This now totals 103 million, meaning that one third of the population with an income of 36,000 for a family of three. Out of the 20.5 million, 6 million have no income at all other than food stamps. • 36. AT T And T-Mobile Merger Case: AT T and T Mobile Merger Question 4 : Should the merger be approved? The AT T and T Mobile merger should not be approved, as the merger may cause more harm than benefits to consumers and for the related market. A horizontal practice is one that involves mergers and activities in the same industry. A horizontal merger comes under Section 7 of Clayton Act and under Section 2 of Sherman Act, as it would create a monopoly. As AT T and T Mobile both operates in same industry, the merger is clearly horizontal. The concern with horizontal arrangements is that it may increase market power, leading to lessened competition and higher prices. Many of interest groups(like other companies like SprintNextel, the Competitive Carriers Association, Cellular South, Leap Wireless, MetroPCS, Computer and Communications Industry Association, Yankee Group, group of seven NGOs including Consumer unions , National Hispanic Media Coalition, Future of Music Coalition, etc.) opposed. Most of them expressed concerns that the merger will stifle the competition, may result in increased prices for consumers, will reduce innovation and technological progress in the field, and it will leave with fewer options for consumers to shop around for cell phone plans. The decrease in consumer choice happens as the merger will reduce the number of mobile wireless carrier who has decent nationwide coverage. The United States Supreme Court had to come to a decision on a class act lawsuit between 1,000,000 female Wal Mart employees and their greatly established employer. The discrimination suit mainly focused on the lack of promotions amongst the plaintiffs and the unequal pay received compared to their male colleagues. Unfortunately, in this case, despite the statistics generally exploiting the difference in compensation and advancement amongst the two sexes fell in favor of the retail giant. During the reading of the Textbook, The Legal Environment of Business, 7th edition , it was discovered that the U.S. Supreme Court heard this case by it initially being decided by a lower court. • 41. Louis XIV And The Development Of English Nationalism In 1688 1689, England underwent a revolution that reshaped its monarchy. When James II took the throne in 1685, the public was optimistic, but this quickly changed. The public s view of James II went from optimistic to cynical because of the King s refusal to take action against the French. Instead of taking action, many viewed James II as becoming like the French monarch. In conjunction with a declining support, James II and his wife had produced a male heir in the summer of 1688, insuring that a catholic would inherit the throne. The birth of a Catholic heir was the breaking point for the English. The result was the English sending secret messages to Prince William of Orange, inviting him to invade England. When James II inherited the throne in 1685, the public expected James II to take action against the French monarch King Louis XIV. The English people feared King Louis XIV s would try to create a universal monarch. If Louis XIV had created a universal monarch, all other countries would have lost their independence. For the English, it would have meant the end to the national identity they all valued. Unfortunately for James II, he did not take action against France. Instead, many believed and feared that James II wanted to change the English government to one modeled after the French Government. This fear escalated when James II attempted to suspend the test acts by issuing the Declaration of Indulgence. Although this declaration was supposed to encourage religious tolerance, many English citizens did not view it that way. They viewed it as treat to the established parliament in England. This increased fears because many compared James II declaration to Louis XIV s acts when he invaded the supreme legal authority of France. Because of their fear of being Frenchified, the English invited the Prince of Orange to invade England, starting the revolution. To justify this action, Pincus describes it best. He said, English loyalty was primarily to English law and English customs [national identity] rather than a particular monarch. Since James had violated that law, he ceased to be an English king and was no longer owed obedience. In the end, the Prince of Orange arrived with the support of the majority of the English. As a result, James II abdicated and fled to France. The Nationalist revolution of 1688 1689 had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Usually one end of the hut was given over to storing livestock. Furnishings were quite sparse; three legged stools, a trestle table, beds softened with straw or leaves and placed on the floor; the peasant diet was mainly porridge, cheese, black bread, and a few homegrown vegetables. Peasants had a hard life, yet they did not work on Sundays, and they could travel to nearby fairs and markets.
