Biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Essay
Biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, (1882 1945), 32nd of the United States. Roosevelt became president in
March 1933 at the depth of the Great Depression, was reelected for an unprecedented three more
terms, and died in office in April 1945, less than a month before the surrender of Germany in World
War II. Despite an attack of poliomyelitis, which paralyzed his legs in 1921, he was a charismatic
optimist whose confidence helped sustain the American people during the strains of economic crisis
and world war.
He was one of America s most controversial leaders. Conservatives claimed that he undermined states
rights and individual liberty. Though Roosevelt labored hard to end the Depression, he had limited ...

Her father, one of James business associates, had made and lost fortunes in the China trade before
settling with his wife and 11 children on the west bank of the Hudson. Sara had sailed to China as a
girl, attended school abroad, and moved in high social circles in London and Paris. Though only half
her husband s age of 52 at the time of her marriage in 1880, she settled in happily at Hyde Park. Their
marriage was serene until broken by James death in 1900.
His record at Harvard, which he attended between 1900 and 1904, was only slightly more impressive.
Thanks to his excellent preparation at Groton, he was able to complete his course of study for his B.A.
in 1903, in only three years. During his fourth year he served as editor of the Crimson, the college
newspaper. However, he was not accepted for Porcellian, Harvard s most prestigious social club, and
he did not receive much stimulation in the classroom. As at Groton, his grades were mediocre, and he
showed no excitement about his studies.
At this point politics gave him a sense of purpose. The Democratic organization in Dutchess county,
the area around Hyde Park, needed a candidate for the New York state Senate in 1910. Party leaders
recognized that although Roosevelt had no political experience he had assets as a candidate: the
wealth to finance a campaign, and the best known political name in the United States. Roosevelt
worked as never before during the campaign.

Department Of Defense (DOD) Group Analysis
According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Group 1 is the first classification of a UAV. This
classification includes UAVs that have a maximum weight of approximately 0 20 pounds. These two
classifications of Group 1 UAVs are Micro and Nano UAVs. On average Micro/Nano UAVs has a low
speed, small size, weight, and low operating altitude. They weigh as little as 100 grams (Qassim,
2014), which limits their capability to carry large payloads, airspeed and normal operating altitude.
The majority of hobbyist UASs resides in this category. The second classification UAS is Group 2,
which are slightly larger and longer ranged than Group 1 UASs. According to Qassim Group 2 UAVs
has a maximum gross takeoff weight of navigation is approximately ... Show more content on

The group 3 UASs have traditionally been reserved for large commercial or governmental planes.
However, it also includes some very large hobbist planes. According to Qassim Group 3 is considered
large UAV with maximum gross takeoff weight of 1320 pounds. This UAV is capable of flying up to
an altitude of 18,000 MSL. Group four is also a large UAV which is similar to group 3. The one major
gap that group four has its weight, which can be greater than 1320 and its ability to fly at any airspeed
up to 18000 MSL. Lastly group 5 which is the largest UAS technology. It has a maximum Gross
Takeoff weight of 1320 pounds and has the capability to fly over 18000 MSL at any airspeed (Qassim,
2014). UAVs may be fixed wing aircraft, or rotary wing aircraft. Each type comes with own advantage
and disadvantage. The fixed wing can have higher endurance since it can glide. Although it has the
upper hand in endurance, it is not agile enough for delivery or any kind contraband usage. On the
other hand the Rotary wing has agility since it has the ability to hover and maneuver in a confined
area. The downside of this type of UAS is endurance as a result of not being able to glide unlike the
fixed wing

Marilyn Monroe Pros And Cons
Norma Jeane Mortenson: Marilyn Monroe in the Making Marilyn Monroe is considered to be one of
the biggest movie goddesses, and prime sex symbols to be alive in her time. Yet, she also wished to be
known as more than just a pretty face, but as a serious, talented actress (Owings). She was born June
1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California with the name of Norma Jeane Mortenson and had endured a
difficult childhood growing up. Despite living in an orphanage, and her mother Gladys Baker in and
out of her life, Monroe managed to out weight the cons with the pros (Porter). Though having endured
such hard times, Marilyn Monroe took her hard knock life and turned it around causing her to boom in
the 1950s changing the outlook of the world. Due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marilyn herself was a struggling starlet who had big dreams. She worked hard to attain her goals, even
if it meant that she had to go without eating to spend every dime she made on classes to get her a big
break in movies. She even showed a single minded dedication and much ambition to make something
of herself and do it all on her own without the help of filthy rich business men who would rather her
body than what she has to offer as an actress or a model (Winder). Monroe not only endured the
struggles of determination but during this time she even showed kind heartedness and made
anonymous donations to several different organizations and always made time for children. She was
not like others who allowed the fame to get to their heads. She always made sure to take time and do
the right things because she knew that everyone struggled with different issues and she did not want
others feeling alone. She knew exactly what it was like to have nothing and struggled for the longest
and wanted to stand up for what she believed in (Porter). Marilyn wanted nothing but the best for
everybody and equal rights, so every chance that she got she took and stood up for what she believed
in. Another one of Marilyn s greatest assets to the world was that she stood up for her right as a
woman and for everyone else as well. This caused a major impact on the world,

American Protocol Vs Kyoto Protocol
The Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol has both established its place in history for climate and
environmental enforcement. While the Montreal Protocol provided for a stepping stone in the history
of environmental regulation, its follow up, the Kyoto Protocol, fell short of the same success. In this
particular instance, the difference in types of politics has an imperative effect on the different schemes.
The type of politics, client politics, that followed the Montreal Protocol scheme is exhibited in its
success while the Kyoto Protocol scheme s amount of success paled in comparison.
The Montreal Protocol was a large stepping stone for environmental regulation as it directly targeted
the substances that were depleting the ozone layer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Montreal Protocol was specific in what it desired to eliminate with an area the nations wanted to
target. More importantly, the nations also had a common enemy in which everyone agreed upon. It
was unmistakable that the ozone depletion was an effect from the chlorofluorocarbons. Overall, the
Montreal Protocol had a large enough consensus of what was the problem and what actions were
needed. There were distributed costs because of the various nations that were on board with phasing
out the chlorofluorocarbons from commercial production and in particular, the aerosol industry. It was
a multilateral success story that had its concentrated benefits: decreasing depletion in the ozone and

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Polyhydroxybutyrate
STUDY OF POLYHYDROXYBUTYRATE PRODUCING MARINE BACTERIA
Sonal Shinde; Vatsala Singh; Guide: Mrs. Reshma Pol; | M. Tech Integrated [Date]
ABSTRACT:
Bioplastic is a form of plastic synthesized from renewable resources such as plant starch and microbial
species. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a carbon reserve and biodegradable polyesters which are
synthesized by many bacteria. Marine organisms have strategies to produce novel compounds like
PHB due to the unique environment they survive. They are accumulated intracellularly as carbon and
energy reserves under certain conditions like, in the presence of excess carbon source.
Polyhydroxybutyrate have been drawing much attention as biodegradable substitutes for conventional
non biodegradable plastics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Diversity Is Considered A Defining Strength For The Workforce
Diversity is considered a defining strength for the workforce and an essential element in
accomplishing the various missions that reflects the nations or community that we serve. Ensuring a
diverse and inclusive workforce enables the department or agency to be more responsive to the public
it serves and offers every individual an equal chance to attain his or her professional goals. A diverse
workforce contributes fresh ideas and offers unique perspective which is vital in achieving the desired
success. Diversity is not limited to race, gender, or ethnicity. A diverse group includes people of
different religions, sexual orientation, ages, work experience, cultures, physical abilities, military
experience, and educational background (Security, 2015). Although those differences are a source of
benefits, they can also be very hard in the work settings and there are two reasons behind that. First,
the difficulty to deal with all the different kinds of people without having a misunderstanding that
arise between the supervisor and the employees. Second, problems that arise must be mediated or
arbitrated by the supervisor. It can be hard for supervisors to recognize the needs of individuals from
other backgrounds and to know how to persuade those individuals to do well. Even if that does not
happen, they may simply misunderstand one another and those misunderstandings may lead to
conflict. In these ways, a diverse workplace can lead to difficulties for supervisors.

Christopher Weaver on Obamacare
This article by Christopher Weaver in the Wall Street Journal brings up some key points about the
number of enrollees in Obamacare as the enrollment deadline closed on Monday. Along the way, the
website has had its downfalls with the Congress shut down and technical issues. This may have
hindered the number of people who potentially would have signed up but got frustrated during the
process. It has been estimated that 7.1 million people have enrolled in the market place. The impact of
this number on the health law is yet to be determined. It also is unseen how this will impact premiums
in the long run, as well as if these insurance companies can maintain the plans offered on the exchange
(Weaver, 2014). Furthermore, the effect of many of the provisions and mandates are yet to be seen; it
will be an interesting next few years to see how it pans out. For example, Weaver asks how many of
these millions were previously uninsured. The main point of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was to
attract the uninsured population to get insurance under the law. Prior to the implementation of the
ACA, there were over 50 million uninsured in America. It is worth knowing how many of these
people were just switching plans or how many of them are new to the health insurance market. This
would be the better measure of the effectiveness of this law in regard to decreasing the total number of
uninsured in America. Even though this will still leave some insured, there are some reasons this may

Asteroid Exploration And Utilization By George Botbyl
The Earth is nearing depletion of its natural resources at a time when human beings are rapidly
expanding the frontiers of space. The resources which may exist on asteroids could have enormous
potential for aiding and enhancing human space exploration as well as life on Earth. With the possibly
limitless opportunities that exist, it is clear that asteroids are the next step for human existence in
space. The resources of the Earth are not infinite, in fact, some are depletable within the next several
decades. Once high grade reserves are used up, low grades ores will have to be used. These effects of
using low grade ores on the environment and society were discussed in the article Asteroid
Exploration and Utilization by George Botbyl as a cycle of negative consequences which build upon
each other. In order to protect Earth, the next 25 years must bring a new era in space development.
Even presidential policy confirms that the United States of America is committed to the establishment
of a permanent human presence in space. The earliest studies of asteroid mining proposed retrieving a
main belt asteroid. Because of the very long travel times to the main asteroid belt, attention has shifted
to the asteroids whose orbits bring them fairly close to the Earth. In these schemes, the asteroids
would be bagged and then processed during the return trip, with the asteroid itself providing the
reaction mass to propel the mission homeward. A mission to one of these near Earth

eCommerce Strategy
Introduction In this assignments I will discuss internet customer expectation and how much they differ
from high street customers, the potential impact of ecommerce applications and planning and
managing an ecommerce strategy. I will also discuss the risk of linking business systems to the
internet.
Impact of e Commerce on business
Internet customers expect to have 24/7 service that is quick and easy with little to no contact with
human members of staff. Speed is key. Maintaining a quick and high performing website is integral to
ecommerce success, particularly during high demand times. Internet customers will become frustrated
quickly if access is slow or not attainable and so will give up and try another rival business due to the
ease of being able to visit multiple competitors within minutes. Surveys have shown that customers
get frustrated with e commerce sites due to pop up adds, difficulty with finding specific items, service
isn t as good as in the actual store and the service isn t personalised. For ecommerce businesses,
customer expectations have become very high. They want cheaper products, in good condition with a
quick delivery time and good customer service if they were to come into contact with an employee.
When a business becomes a click business or adds on to an existing brick, then their target customers
increases and could become global, whereas with solely a brick business their customers are restricted
to those within the

of the full range of financial audit such as reliability of financial statements, regularity of transactions
and functioning of internal control and procurement systems. Inclusion of some aspects of
performance audit (such as e.g. value for money in major infrastructure contracts) would also be
expected of a high quality audit function.
With the Auditor General adopting International Auditing Standards the envisaged wider role of the
Auditor General in auditing circumstances changed. The timing of audits has changed and now has to
be done during the busy periods due to reporting deadlines imposed by the PEFA. This implies that
Auditor General will need to staff up in order to be in a position to meet the reporting deadlines.
Moreover Devolution has changed the way government money is spent in Pakistan. Responsibility for
well over billions of rupees a year now lies with the devolved administrations. These changes in
accountability for public money have also meant changes in the audit arrangements.

The Practice Of Polygamy Throughout A Wealthy Family
In a wealthy family, polygamous housing consists of a separate housing unit for each wife and her
children (Metz, 1993). These units can be separate houses or houses within a walled family compound
(Metz, 1993). A compound can include a separate house that the men of the family share and use for
male gatherings, such as meals with guests or business meetings (Metz, 1993).
The practice of polygamy is decreasing significantly due to urbanization, education, development, and
the cost of living (Al Saif, 1997). Generally, educated and employed women have more independence
and reject polygamy as a part of their marriage expectations. Gharaib (1991) found that 86.8% of
husbands in the Gulf (Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia) have
only one wife, 9.6% have two wives, 1.1% has three wives and 0.33% only has four wives; 74.7% had
married their relatives; and 25.5% live with their extended families. Al Saif (1997) found that in Saudi
Arabia, only 4.8% of parents approves of their daughters marrying a husband who has another wife.
This rate is much lower than the previous rate of 14.5% (Al Saif, 1997). Traditionally the decision to
marry made mainly by both families and marriage is often contracted by agreement amongst families
in order to expand their circle of alliances and enhance their prestige (Metz, 1993). A partner is chosen
by a person s family, not based on the Western concept of romantic love (Metz, 1993). A woman s
opinion may be respected

Hershey s Way Of Making Chocolate
Chocolate is one of the most popular products consumed in the United States and all around the world.
Hershey Chocolate Company originated in 1894, by Milton Hershey (Hershey Company, 2015). He
was the first American who began producing milk chocolate bars, and eventually created multiple
flavors that changed the chocolate industry forever. With such mass production and success, Hershey
was able to make milk chocolate, a once luxury item for the wealthy, into an affordable treat for all
(Hershey Company, 2015). Hershey s way of making chocolate is one of a kind. Hershey starts the
chocolate making process by importing cocoa beans from cacao trees found in tropical regions near

The milk is mixed with sugar into a taffy like consistency where it will then be blended with chocolate
liquor. The milk adds the sweet taste and smooth texture while the chocolate liquor adds the chocolate
flavor. By combining chocolate liquor, milk and sugar it creates a chocolate crumb where it is then
ground into a fine powder to create chocolate paste. The chocolate paste is refined in the conching
machine where it brings out more of the rich chocolate flavor. The final step to Hershey s chocolate
making process is sending the chocolate to the drying rack where it will be cooled, wrapped and
distributed all around the world for consumption. For the S mores taste test, four different types of
Hershey chocolate were used to conduct the experiment. There are multiple differences between all
four types of Hershey s chocolates and ingredients used to make them. Milk Chocolate(remove

products such as the chocolate bars, kisses, etc. Hershey s milk chocolate is very smooth, and even has
a little gritty texture. This chocolate is very sweet and not too chocolaty. Hershey s milk chocolate
contains milk, which gives it a creamy texture, sweet flavor and a light brown color. Hershey s special

feel like math is very fun, once you get used to it. When I asked him about specifically about problem
solving, he told me You have to think about problem solving like a game! Like in division, you have
to destroy creatures and figure out how to put the creatures in equal groups . I gave Dave the problem
of Legs and Heads . Dave specifically told me he wanted to learn algebra, so I figured he would
appreciate the challenge of this problem. Before we started solving the problem, I asked Dave a few
questions about the problem. I asked him what the problem was trying to figure out. Dave told me
This problem is trying to figure out how many cows and how many chickens Then I asked him what
knowledge did he have to know about cows and chickens to solve this problem. Dave answered That
cows have 4 legs and chickens have 2. They both have one head. In addition to what the problem is
asking, Dave also needed to have pre algebraic thinking, division skills, multiplication, the law of
conservation and basic addition and subtraction skills. Then we began to work on the problem.

Analysis Of Angelina County Shared Cultural Ties With...
The stats mentioned above demonstrate that a significant number of non slaveowners resides in
Angelina. Due to the lack of financial resources to purchase slaves, they relied on their own labors to
sustain a livelihood for their homestead creating a different economy not associated with the
plantation system. The large population of non slaveholders, small farms, translates to economic and
political power within this county. McCaslin argues that since the slave population had declined to less
than half of the regional average the propaganda tactics utilized in the other counties had little effect
on this county. Voters instead listened to attorney James W. Guinn chooses to follow the voice of

Finally, McCaslin challenges scholars seeking understanding of Unionism they need to study the

The House Of Candles Essay
ABSTRACT: Wilfrid Wilson Gibson (1878 1962) occupies a distinct place among Georgian poets.
His name is associated with such poets as Rupert Brooke, Edward Marsh, Walter de la Mare and
Siegfried Sassoon. He has written a large number of poems on diverse themes like nature, love,
unemployment and the sufferings of common people, old age and childhood. Besides, the plight of
women also gets expression in some of his poems like Agatha Steel, The Operation, The Call, The
Wound and many others. The House of Candles is such a poem that deals with the predicament of a
woman in bearing an illegitimate child. Man and woman are equally responsible for the act of sexual
intercourse out of wedlock. If this mating results in pregnancy of woman, it cannot be called an act of
chance or accident. Unfortunately, society is of two minds towards female sexuality and in such
circumstances women are blamed and all the punishment and criticism are meted upon them. No one
cares for the man who is responsible for such condition of a woman. In fact, the society is real culprit
for the predicament of women. In this article, an attempt has been made to discuss Gibson s The

colonists caused ( out of 2,200 troops, 268 British soldiers and officers had been killed; another 828

Most of the loyalists served the British in the American Revolution (1775 1783).As American rebels
fought for independence from Britain, Loyalists supported Britain for many different reasons. A lot of
loyalists felt a personal loyalty to Britain. Some were afraid that revolution would bring chaos to
America. Numerous amounts of loyalists agreed with the rebels view that Britain has mistreated
America, but believed the solution could be worked out within the British Empire. Recent immigrants
from Europe also tended to support the Crown. Their reasons for becoming Loyalists were as varied as
their backgrounds. Some had strong ties with Britain: others had simply supported what turned out to
be the losing side. Local incidents, fear of change, self interest, political principles, emotional bonds
all of these influenced their decision to remain loyal to the Crown. As American Revolutionary War
raged on, the Loyalists became increasingly worried about their future as it became evident that the

The Yellow Wallpaper from the Point of View of a Doctor s...
The Yellow Wallpaper from the Point of View of a Doctor s Wife The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte
Perkins Gilman, is a story told from the first person point of view of a doctor s wife who has nervous
condition. The first person standpoint gives the reader access only to the woman s thoughts, and thus,
is limited. The limited viewpoint of this story helps the reader to experience a feeling of isolation, just
as the wife feels throughout the story. The point of view is also limited in that the story takes places in
the present, and as a result the wife has no benefit of hindsight, and is never able to actually see that
the men in her life are part of the reason she never gets well. This paper will discuss how Gilman s

No matter what a woman did or thought, she was still seen as the lesser of the sexes. Like the narrator,
women of that time were directed to suppress their creativity as it threatened the dominating male s
sense of control. By having the narrator be forced to write in secret, There comes John, and I must put
this away he hates to have me write a word, Gilman was able to show that even the simplest things,
like wanting to write were forbidden, lest the male approved (392). Prohibited from working and not
being able to contribute to the household as a proper wife, the narrator begins to feel helpless: So I...
am absolutely forbidden to work until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas (390).
The narrator s husband and brother both exert their own will over hers, forcing her to do what they
think is the appropriate behavior for a sick woman. She has been given a schedule[d] prescription for
each hour in the day; [John] takes all care from me (391). The way that she is required to act involves
practically no exertion of her own free will. Instead, she is expected to obediently accept the fact that
her own ideas are mere fancy, and only the opinions of the men in her life can be trusted. The fact that
she is not allowed to think for herself is narrowing the extent of her authority in her life and of her
autonomy. With no creative outlet her mind starts to find things upon which to dwell, things that only
she can see. Virtually imprisoned in

What Is The Role Of Laura Ingalls Wilder s Early Childhood
The role of a pioneer women usually involved cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. The
school houses were really far apart from where most people lived because everything was so spread
out, so most of the kids in the pioneer days were taught at home by the women in the house, or they
went to the school houses by wagon or they had to walk depending on how close it was. Some of the
women worked as partners with the pioneer men with establishing homes. Once and in a while they
would bring the wood in, but they mostly just did the household stuff, and they took care of the kids.

Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis and The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood
The adolescent years are often associated with turbulence, illusion, and self discovery; however,
Kingsley Amis s Lucky Jim and Margaret
Atwood s The Edible Woman demonstrate that more often than not, the twenties possess these
qualities to a greater extent than adolescence. The age period of the twenties often consists of
relationships, employment and self issues and using the premise of these uncertain times, Amis and
Atwood effectively satire various societal systems. Moreover, Amis and Atwood both implement the
use of the foil, a character who, by contrast with another character, accentuates that character s
distinctive characteristics. In

Thus, Jim was inwardly laughing at Christine s mannerisms and yet, when Carol
Goldsmith asks him What s the joke?, Jim replies Oh, nothing (Amis

show Jim s disparity between his outward and inward character. However, towards the climax of
Lucky
Jim, Jim becomes furious with Bertrand Welch for telling Jim to stay away from Christine and for the
first time, Jim reconciles his thought and his action. The bloody old towser faced boot faced totem
pole on a crap reservation, Dixon thought. You bloody old towser faced boot faced totem pole on a
crap reservation, he said (Amis 209).
This signifies the maturation of Jim s character and the union of his outward and inward personage.
Moreover, this character growth would never have occurred without the use of a foil because without
the contrast of Christine to Margaret, Jim would have never appreciated
Christine s appealing attributes. Similarly, in The Edible Woman,
Atwood shows the maturation of Marian s character. However, unlike the character of Jim, Marian s
outward and inward character divergence occurs after Marian meets one of her love interests: Duncan.

Examples Of Mall Observation
I chose to observe the library I work for, which is the Squirrel Hill location of the Carnegie Library of
Pittsburgh system. I performed my observation around 3:30 PM on Monday, September 19th.
There are technically three outdoor entrances, but two of them actually lead to the main inner
entrance. You can see the main entrance from the street, which allows paid parking. The library itself
is positioned above a parking lot (also paid parking), which is where the second main entrance is seen.
Both of these two main entrances lead to the same lobby area where you can either take the steps or
the elevator to the library floor. The third entrance is located on the opposite side of the branch along
the side street, which is residential and free parking, but you can t see the entrance until you physically
walk up the driveway.
Upon entering, there are no signs indicated the layout of the library. At potentially strategic locations
as determined by the Facilities department, there are extremely vague maps indicating emergency
exits for the building, but they are small and not very noticeable. By the main outer entrances, there is
an elevator, stairs, and a space for flyers (bulletin board and a shelf); by the inner main entrance, there
s a bench outside. Upon entering the library, the magazine collection and first security stand is
immediately to the left. On the right are New books in paperback format that are strung up in display.
Ahead is the New and Bestseller collection

Essay on The Duel Between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton
In the battle between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton was one of the most famous duels in the
early 19th century. Both men were very significant political leaders of the United States. The men had
clashes throughout the 1790 s which lead to a duel between the two and Alexander Hamilton lost his
life. Aaron Burr was born in New Jersey in 1756. He was involved in many political events though out
his life. He was the second president of Princeton, and he was the grandson of Jonathon Edwards. This
man had politics woven all through him. While at the college of New Jersey, which later became

New York s politics. In 1782, Hamilton was elected to the Continental Congress. As Alexander
Hamilton s political career began to get under way, things seem to be going as planned. He played a
major role in the constitution. He was one of America s first Constitutional lawyers, and wrote most of
the Federalist Papers, a primary source for Constitutional interpretation. He was perhaps the best
lawyer in America at the time of his death and his views were remarkably consistent and coherent. He
also had a clear vision of the new nation and believed that it could learn much from British economic
policy and governmental practice. Since he played such a major role in the Constitution Convention,
he obviously was going to serve a major role in the new government. He proved himself a brilliant

to assume the unpaid debts of the various states. In his later years, he was a strong member of the

Effects Of Taiwanese Resistance Of Japanese Oppression...
Douglas Wu Chinese 35 TA: Teng Xu Taiwanese Resistance of Japanese Oppression through
Literature The Taiwanese Literature Movement started in the 1930s while Taiwan was under Japanese
occupation and was a combined effort of authors, writers, poets, and publishers to establish awareness
and recognition of Taiwanese literature and culture. This happened because many Taiwanese writers
realized the oppressive colonial government had suppressed and censored a large amount of original
Taiwanese cultural identity and literature. The authors use of literature in the Taiwanese New
Literature movement symbolized the Taiwanese common people s struggle under a merciless and
repressive government that had plagued people with poverty. Lu He jo, Lai Ho, and Yang K uei s texts
are similar because they all wrote under the Taiwanese New Literature movement s ideals and their
works revealed how the Japanese were incompatible with the Taiwanese and to influence the people to
reject the Japanese rule. One of the writers during the Japanese colonial era was Lu He jo, who wrote
about the common man s struggle under the Japanese government.. In the text The Oxcart by Lu He
jo, the story centers on a man named Yang T ien ting, who is struggling to keep food on the table for
his family because he is losing business to the motor machines brought by the Japanese. In The
Oxcart, Old Lin states, That s right. It s stupid to work. Look at this Japanese era. All the work where
you can make a lot of money, they ve taken it all away. Right? I say it s stupid for us to work (Lu 33).
Just like the writers of the Taiwanese New Literature movement, the character in the story, Old Lin,
agrees that the Japanese have taken too much from the Taiwanese people and completely changed
them, leaving behind poverty and cruelty. In addition, the old man in The Oxcart talks about Japanese
technology in his society: It s not just oxcarts. Everything from the old Ch ing dynasty none of it s any
good in this Japanese era (Lu 25). The old man realizes that the Japanese machines are more advanced
and better; yet, they are not improving anyone s lives and are incompatible with the Taiwanese society.

Bhopal, India Disaster Of 1984
Introduction This paper will examine the Bhopal, India disaster of 1984 focusing on the ethical
responsibility of Union Carbide. In the rest of this document is the case that a corporation has a
responsibility to behave ethically if for no other reason than increase in long term profitability.
Background In 1969 the Union Carbide plan was built in Bohpal India. The plant was operated by

Union Carbide India Ltd was a subsidiary), 22% of the plan was owned by the Indian Government and
the remaining 27.1% ownership was spread over approximately 23500 Indian Citizens (Trotter, Day,
Love, 1989). In 1977 an additional plant began construction though before completion in 1979 some
portions of the plant were redesigned. The plant was built to have a maximum annual production
capacity of 5000 tons of Sevin though this production level was never reached. In 1982 an audit of the
plant pointed out 10 safety deficiencies, of which 2 remained unresolved by 1984. However the plant
managers at the plant had writing Union Carbide in the US stating that all problems from the 1982
audit had been rectified. (Trotter, Day, Love, 1989) The Union Carbide plant in Bhopal had been
losing money and a number of cost saving measures were taken. These measures resulted including
the reduction of equipment operators in 1983 from 12 to 5 employees per shift. This change caused

Rigel Research Paper
Rigel is a blue supergiant, binary star system, brightest star in the Orion constellation and it is also the
7th brightest star overall. It s 10 million years old and it is relatively a young star, compared to our
Sun, which is 4,6 billion years old. It also is 74 times the radius of our Sun. So large, in fact, that if
Rigel was replaced with our Sun, it would stretch to the orbit of Mercury. That is the result of swelling
up, because it has depleted its hydrogen supply. Rigel is around 800 light years away from Earth. And
it is 40,000 times brighter the luminosity, and around 12,000 C, more than twice as hot as our Sun.
Similarly, to other stars of this kind, it will soon burn through the hydrogen in its core, if it hasn t
happened already, will become a supernova. If so, it will be as bright as a quarter moon.
The name Rigel comes from an Arabic phrase, Rijl Jauzah al Yusrā. It means the left leg of the Jauzah,

Positive And Negative Effects Of Gender Stereotyping
Throughout society there are many different cultural and social perceptions that allow people to form
judgmental beliefs about society. Encompassed within these perceptions are stereotypes and prejudice.
Stereotypes and prejudice are examples of categorizations of people which allow our brains to fill in
the types or interactions that may happen with people. There are different positive and negative forms
of stereo types and prejudice that effect our interaction with individuals resulting in judgmental
affliction upon individuals or groups. This essay will analyze and provide examples of the positive and
negative effects of gender stereotyping and prejudice. Stereotyping can come in many different forms
and have many different subjects. One form of stereotyping is of gender. Just about everyone holds
stereotypes of women and men some positive and some negative. Women are more empathic and
talkative; men are more competent and aggressive. For example, are women really more empathic
than men? Which women? Empathic toward whom? When women s and men s actual behavior is
observed systematically under a variety of conditions, the sexes do not differ in having feelings of
empathy or in its expression (book, p. 365). Social pressures influence how we conform to these
stereotypes, however it does create a problem when people are victimized by the negative stereotypes
of their gender or group. There are different connotations that can be identified when stereotyping:
positive, women are better caregivers and men are better breadwinners or money makers. These
positive connotations can be taken negative towards the other gender or even their own gender men
can be caretakers too and women can make money. In the early 1900 s there was a high discrimination
towards women, women entering the work force worked in factory lines, while men worked
management which resulted in lower pay for women kept the men in charge. Over the years gender
roles have taken a turn and there is now a significant increase with women working and taking on
management roles. Roles in society are different between genders and those differences either positive
or negative will hopefully diminish after time.

Ethnic And Ethnic Conflict In The Rwanda s Genocide
Rwanda is a small landlocked East African country with a rich cultural background and tightly knit
community it was a small country primarily surviving as an agricultural economy, with one of the
highest population densities in Africa. Rwanda had previously gained independence from Belgium on
July first, 1962, but as tensions rose between the majority population the Hutu, and the minority
population the Tutsi, violence broke out leading to the beginning of a full fledged genocide that began
on April 6, 1994, and would take between 500,000 to 1 million lives of the Rwandan people.
The sociological perspective that lead to the beginning of this genocide is extremely unique, as most
ethnic conflict and violence in history has occurred due to a conflict within two ethnic groups beliefs
and cultures, yet in the case of the Tutsi and Hutu, they had very similar racial and cultural traits. It
was rather a division of socio economic status between the pastoralists being the Tutsi, and the
agriculturists representing the Hutu. Even more, this difference between the Tutsi and Hutu is a open
class system, as a Hutu could become a Tutsi if they acquired cattle and vice versa. This class mobility
and lack of ethnic and cultural conflict makes this situation so unique given its sociological
perspective. Ethnic identity became so powerful in the Rwandan culture because Under Belgian rule,
the difference in status between the Hutu and Tutsi became socially fixed, the entire

The Effects Of Global Warming On Human Activity
Debates about global warming have received much attention in the last few years. Opponents may say
global warming is a natural cause however, the reality is global warming is occurring due to human
activity. Global warming is best defined as a term used to describe a gradual increase in the average
temperature of the Earth s atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently
changing the Earth s climate. Global warming does not only increase temperature it is also capable of
decreasing temperature in Earth s climate. Global warming is occurring due to human activity because

Ever since the industrial revolution earth s atmosphere has begun to heat up. The Industrial Revolution
was the transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between
1820 and 1840. During that time period burning coal was used to power machines and factories. Coal
is considered a fossil fuel, it is unreplaceable. Also burning coal is harmful for the environment.
Although the use of coal has decreased, it is still in places and its harming the environment.
Greenhouse gases harm the environment dramatically. Green house gas is best known as any gaseous
compound in the atmosphere that is capable of absorbing infrared radiation, thereby trapping and
holding heat in the atmosphere (A Blanket Around the Earth, 1). By increasing the heat in the
atmosphere, greenhouse gases are responsible for the greenhouse effect, which ultimately leads to
global warming. Most climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is
human expansion of the greenhouse effect (A Blanket Around the Earth, 1). So its obvious greenhouse
gases which are a caused by human activity are a major contribution to global warming. Long lived
gases that remain semi permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to
changes in temperature and described as forcing climate change (A Blanket Around the Earth, 1). This

Genetically Modified Organism s ( Gmo ) Essay
Genetically Modified Organism s (GMO) have been gaining public spotlight as scrutiny over their
safety has recently been popularized. A GMO is defined as an organism whose genetic material has
been altered by means of genetic engineering, (Dictionary.com, 2015). The debate for both sides of the
argument have been detrimental to the other and have yet to be copiously presented without a bias.
While any organism can be genetically modified, the unrest between consumers and producers is
centered around GMO crops because of the potential impact they could have on human health
(Bushak, 2015).
While the popularity of GMOs has only recently started to skyrocket, GMOs have been around for
thousands of years. A reporter for Vice, Isobel Yeung, stated, Essentially, farmers have been modifying
crops for thousands and thousands of years we ve been cross breeding our best possible, most
productive hybrids to create the best crops, (Bushak, 2015). However, the difference today is there are
genes being added that otherwise would not be there (Bushak, 2015).
The fight today over GMOs has become more volatile than ever before. While there are a variety of
organizations fighting for and against GMOs, two have become prominent faces for their respective
arguments. Monsanto, a bioengineering company, has been experimenting with genetically modified
seeds since 1987 when the US Department of Agriculture allowed them to field test genetically

Words Affecting A Child s Second Language
A child s first words, a jumble of sounds that no longer sound like gibberish, which cause grown men
and women to turn into ecstatic five year olds, and show the beginning of a child s path in learning
language. From that point and onwards the child only picks up more words, understanding their
meaning and the context in which they can be used, but eventually that child speaks a different kind of
first word. A first word that causes those same parents to cringe, and flinch in disgust, as these are the
common reactions that society wants one to believe occur in response to the use of vulgar words.
These words that are taboo in society in every culture, and all corners of the world, words that caused
many to learn what soap tastes like, to know what it feels like to get an earful for saying a mouthful,
and also understand the pain that come from the instinctive smack to the back of the head from a ...

In fact by the age of two, most children begin picking up their first cuss word, and by the age of five
will have attained most of the blasphemous language that they themselves will go onto use. These
obscene words are in frequent use still, as in reality they play a vital function of helping to relieve
stress, become more persuasive, and help manage pain. Already these various patterns of letters
(known as words ) help us to communicate our emotions to others from love to hate, happiness to
sadness, and many other deep and complex feelings. By excluding cuss words, it infringes on our
ability to communicate and express ourselves, almost directly limiting a right to a freedom of speech.
By as a society conforming and allowing these expressions to be used, it will help to expand the
fundamental values of the human race by expanding this constitutional right as well as allowing us as
a whole to feel the benefits these expletives can

New Greatest Generation
The New Greatest Generation 1. They are the most threatening and exciting generation since the Baby
Boomers brought about social revolution, not because they re to take over the Establishment but they
re growing up without one. (p.28, 2nd column) I do not agree with this quote at all. There has always
been an establishment but us millennials do not use it. We are far more less social then any previous
generation in existance. We tend to avoid people in public unless we really have too. We hide behide
technology and for that we are not really able communicate in the real world. Without our technology
we would not be able to function socially. 2. They have less civic engagement and lower political
participation than any previous group. (p.28, 2nd column) Without a doubt in my mind I one hunderd
percent agree that this quotation is correct. Millennials could care less about whats going on in our
government. From my experience, millenials only care for themselves, they don t care whats going on
around them. They don t care at a point where they are considering voting for Trump for laughs and
giggles. 3. What Millennials are most famous for besides narcissism is its effect: entitlement. (p.28,
3rd column) Every millennial feels entitlement that they deserve without even giving it effort. They

Some Millennails want to break out of their shell and explore what the world s has in store for them.
However, from my experience, Millennials are more about materialistic things. When there is a new
apple product, almost every Millennial freak out and get excited for it. Millennials are happy with
materialistic things. Along with being materialistic happy, not all millenials are cool and reserved.
From my experience, they are stressed and anxious. Life is not easy at the moment and they
experience the pain from it. They may be not all that passionate but no Millenial is

Essay about Criminal Law and The War on Drugs
Criminal Law and The War on Drugs
These records of wars, intrigues, factions, and revolutions, are so many collections of experiments, by
which the politician or moral philosopher fixes the principles of his science, in the same manner as the
physician or natural philosopher becomes acquainted with the nature of plants, minerals, and other
external objects, by the experiments which he forms concerning them. (David Hume.)2
Our long armed and hairy ancestors had no idea of redress beyond vengeance, or of justice beyond
mere individual reprisal. 3
To determine what constitutes criminal law, is, as one learned judge has opined, a work of art, it is
something that may be easier to recognize than define ... 4 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That effect may be in relation to social, economic or political interests; and the legislature has had in
mind to suppress the evil or to safeguard the interest threatened. 8
And further, it cannot be neither a static catalogue of offences nor order of sanctions. The evolving
and transforming types and patterns of social and economic activities are constantly calling for new
penal controls and limitations and that new modes of enforcement and punishment adapted to the
changing conditions are not to be taken as being equally within the ambit of parliamentary power is, in
my opinion, not seriously arguable. 9
In the relatively recent case of RJR Macdonald v. Canada (1995), the Supreme Court of Canada, it
was determined that the exercise of the power to make an act a criminal one, a test is to be applied;
one of substance, not form. 10 To be fully fledged criminal law, the act prohibited must pose a
significant, grave and serious risk of harm to public health, morality, safety or security ...
And, so, how does this established judicial view apply to the business of keeping in check those
substances which may prove to be harmful to the individuals who misuse them?
As to the nature of the various illegitimate drugs and their effect on human beings well, I shall have to
leave that to the medical doctors; but, I just simply wonder, what is so wrong with

  • 2. Biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Essay Biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt, (1882 1945), 32nd of the United States. Roosevelt became president in March 1933 at the depth of the Great Depression, was reelected for an unprecedented three more terms, and died in office in April 1945, less than a month before the surrender of Germany in World War II. Despite an attack of poliomyelitis, which paralyzed his legs in 1921, he was a charismatic optimist whose confidence helped sustain the American people during the strains of economic crisis and world war. He was one of America s most controversial leaders. Conservatives claimed that he undermined states rights and individual liberty. Sara had sailed to China as a girl, attended school abroad, and moved in high social circles in London and Paris. Though only half her husband s age of 52 at the time of her marriage in 1880, she settled in happily at Hyde Park. Their marriage was serene until broken by James death in 1900. His record at Harvard, which he attended between 1900 and 1904, was only slightly more impressive. Thanks to his excellent preparation at Groton, he was able to complete his course of study for his B.A. in 1903, in only three years. During his fourth year he served as editor of the Crimson, the college newspaper. However, he was not accepted for Porcellian, Harvard s most prestigious social club, and he did not receive much stimulation in the classroom. As at Groton, his grades were mediocre, and he showed no excitement about his studies. At this point politics gave him a sense of purpose. The Democratic organization in Dutchess county, the area around Hyde Park, needed a candidate for the New York state Senate in 1910. Party leaders recognized that although Roosevelt had no political experience he had assets as a candidate: the wealth to finance a campaign, and the best known political name in the United States. Roosevelt worked as never before during the campaign. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Department Of Defense (DOD) Group Analysis According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Group 1 is the first classification of a UAV. This classification includes UAVs that have a maximum weight of approximately 0 20 pounds. These two classifications of Group 1 UAVs are Micro and Nano UAVs. On average Micro/Nano UAVs has a low speed, small size, weight, and low operating altitude. They weigh as little as 100 grams (Qassim, 2014), which limits their capability to carry large payloads, airspeed and normal operating altitude. The majority of hobbyist UASs resides in this category. The second classification UAS is Group 2, which are slightly larger and longer ranged than Group 1 UASs. The group 3 UASs have traditionally been reserved for large commercial or governmental planes. However, it also includes some very large hobbist planes. According to Qassim Group 3 is considered large UAV with maximum gross takeoff weight of 1320 pounds. This UAV is capable of flying up to an altitude of 18,000 MSL. Group four is also a large UAV which is similar to group 3. The one major gap that group four has its weight, which can be greater than 1320 and its ability to fly at any airspeed up to 18000 MSL. Lastly group 5 which is the largest UAS technology. It has a maximum Gross Takeoff weight of 1320 pounds and has the capability to fly over 18000 MSL at any airspeed (Qassim, 2014). UAVs may be fixed wing aircraft, or rotary wing aircraft. Each type comes with own advantage and disadvantage. The fixed wing can have higher endurance since it can glide. Although it has the upper hand in endurance, it is not agile enough for delivery or any kind contraband usage. On the other hand the Rotary wing has agility since it has the ability to hover and maneuver in a confined area. The downside of this type of UAS is endurance as a result of not being able to glide unlike the fixed wing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Marilyn Monroe Pros And Cons Norma Jeane Mortenson: Marilyn Monroe in the Making Marilyn Monroe is considered to be one of the biggest movie goddesses, and prime sex symbols to be alive in her time. Yet, she also wished to be known as more than just a pretty face, but as a serious, talented actress (Owings). She was born June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California with the name of Norma Jeane Mortenson and had endured a difficult childhood growing up. Despite living in an orphanage, and her mother Gladys Baker in and out of her life, Monroe managed to out weight the cons with the pros (Porter). Monroe not only endured the struggles of determination but during this time she even showed kind heartedness and made anonymous donations to several different organizations and always made time for children. She was not like others who allowed the fame to get to their heads. Diversity Is Considered A Defining Strength For The Workforce Diversity is considered a defining strength for the workforce and an essential element in accomplishing the various missions that reflects the nations or community that we serve. Ensuring a diverse and inclusive workforce enables the department or agency to be more responsive to the public it serves and offers every individual an equal chance to attain his or her professional goals. A diverse workforce contributes fresh ideas and offers unique perspective which is vital in achieving the desired success. Diversity is not limited to race, gender, or ethnicity. A diverse group includes people of different religions, sexual orientation, ages, work experience, cultures, physical abilities, military experience, and educational background (Security, 2015). Although those differences are a source of benefits, they can also be very hard in the work settings and there are two reasons behind that. First, the difficulty to deal with all the different kinds of people without having a misunderstanding that arise between the supervisor and the employees. Second, problems that arise must be mediated or arbitrated by the supervisor. It can be hard for supervisors to recognize the needs of individuals from other backgrounds and to know how to persuade those individuals to do well. Even if that does not happen, they may simply misunderstand one another and those misunderstandings may lead to conflict. In these ways, a diverse workplace can lead to difficulties for supervisors. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Christopher Weaver on Obamacare This article by Christopher Weaver in the Wall Street Journal brings up some key points about the number of enrollees in Obamacare as the enrollment deadline closed on Monday. Along the way, the website has had its downfalls with the Congress shut down and technical issues. This may have hindered the number of people who potentially would have signed up but got frustrated during the process. It has been estimated that 7.1 million people have enrolled in the market place. The impact of this number on the health law is yet to be determined. It also is unseen how this will impact premiums in the long run, as well as if these insurance companies can maintain the plans offered on the exchange (Weaver, 2014). Furthermore, the effect of many of the provisions and mandates are yet to be seen; it will be an interesting next few years to see how it pans out. For example, Weaver asks how many of these millions were previously uninsured. The main point of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was to attract the uninsured population to get insurance under the law. Prior to the implementation of the ACA, there were over 50 million uninsured in America. It is worth knowing how many of these people were just switching plans or how many of them are new to the health insurance market. This would be the better measure of the effectiveness of this law in regard to decreasing the total number of uninsured in America. • 11. Asteroid Exploration And Utilization By George Botbyl The Earth is nearing depletion of its natural resources at a time when human beings are rapidly expanding the frontiers of space. The resources which may exist on asteroids could have enormous potential for aiding and enhancing human space exploration as well as life on Earth. With the possibly limitless opportunities that exist, it is clear that asteroids are the next step for human existence in space. The resources of the Earth are not infinite, in fact, some are depletable within the next several decades. Once high grade reserves are used up, low grades ores will have to be used. These effects of using low grade ores on the environment and society were discussed in the article Asteroid Exploration and Utilization by George Botbyl as a cycle of negative consequences which build upon each other. In order to protect Earth, the next 25 years must bring a new era in space development. Even presidential policy confirms that the United States of America is committed to the establishment of a permanent human presence in space. The earliest studies of asteroid mining proposed retrieving a main belt asteroid. Because of the very long travel times to the main asteroid belt, attention has shifted to the asteroids whose orbits bring them fairly close to the Earth. In these schemes, the asteroids would be bagged and then processed during the return trip, with the asteroid itself providing the reaction mass to propel the mission homeward. • 12. Customer Expectation And How Much They Differ From High... eCommerce Strategy Introduction In this assignments I will discuss internet customer expectation and how much they differ from high street customers, the potential impact of ecommerce applications and planning and managing an ecommerce strategy. I will also discuss the risk of linking business systems to the internet. Impact of e Commerce on business Internet customers expect to have 24/7 service that is quick and easy with little to no contact with human members of staff. Speed is key. Maintaining a quick and high performing website is integral to ecommerce success, particularly during high demand times. Internet customers will become frustrated quickly if access is slow or not attainable and so will give up and try another rival business due to the ease of being able to visit multiple competitors within minutes. Surveys have shown that customers get frustrated with e commerce sites due to pop up adds, difficulty with finding specific items, service isn t as good as in the actual store and the service isn t personalised. For ecommerce businesses, customer expectations have become very high. They want cheaper products, in good condition with a quick delivery time and good customer service if they were to come into contact with an employee. When a business becomes a click business or adds on to an existing brick, then their target customers increases and could become global, whereas with solely a brick business their customers are restricted to those within the ... • 14. The Practice Of Polygamy Throughout A Wealthy Family In a wealthy family, polygamous housing consists of a separate housing unit for each wife and her children (Metz, 1993). These units can be separate houses or houses within a walled family compound (Metz, 1993). A compound can include a separate house that the men of the family share and use for male gatherings, such as meals with guests or business meetings (Metz, 1993). The practice of polygamy is decreasing significantly due to urbanization, education, development, and the cost of living (Al Saif, 1997). Generally, educated and employed women have more independence and reject polygamy as a part of their marriage expectations. Gharaib (1991) found that 86.8% of husbands in the Gulf (Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia) have only one wife, 9.6% have two wives, 1.1% has three wives and 0.33% only has four wives; 74.7% had married their relatives; and 25.5% live with their extended families. Al Saif (1997) found that in Saudi Arabia, only 4.8% of parents approves of their daughters marrying a husband who has another wife. This rate is much lower than the previous rate of 14.5% (Al Saif, 1997). Traditionally the decision to marry made mainly by both families and marriage is often contracted by agreement amongst families in order to expand their circle of alliances and enhance their prestige (Metz, 1993). His name is associated with such poets as Rupert Brooke, Edward Marsh, Walter de la Mare and Siegfried Sassoon. He has written a large number of poems on diverse themes like nature, love, unemployment and the sufferings of common people, old age and childhood. Besides, the plight of women also gets expression in some of his poems like Agatha Steel, The Operation, The Call, The Wound and many others. The House of Candles is such a poem that deals with the predicament of a woman in bearing an illegitimate child. Man and woman are equally responsible for the act of sexual intercourse out of wedlock. If this mating results in pregnancy of woman, it cannot be called an act of chance or accident. Unfortunately, society is of two minds towards female sexuality and in such circumstances women are blamed and all the punishment and criticism are meted upon them. Some had strong ties with Britain: others had simply supported what turned out to be the losing side. Local incidents, fear of change, self interest, political principles, emotional bonds all of these influenced their decision to remain loyal to the Crown. As American Revolutionary War raged on, the Loyalists became increasingly worried about their future as it became evident that the cause of independence was going to succeed. Many of them began to scrutinize sailing for Britain while many others considered alternative British Colonies as a destination for resettlement. The Yellow Wallpaper from the Point of View of a Doctor s Wife The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a story told from the first person point of view of a doctor s wife who has nervous condition. The first person standpoint gives the reader access only to the woman s thoughts, and thus, is limited. The limited viewpoint of this story helps the reader to experience a feeling of isolation, just as the wife feels throughout the story. The point of view is also limited in that the story takes places in the present, and as a result the wife has no benefit of hindsight, and is never able to actually see that the men in her life are part of the reason she never gets well. This paper will discuss how Gilman s choice of point of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No matter what a woman did or thought, she was still seen as the lesser of the sexes. Like the narrator, women of that time were directed to suppress their creativity as it threatened the dominating male s sense of control. By having the narrator be forced to write in secret, There comes John, and I must put this away he hates to have me write a word, Gilman was able to show that even the simplest things, like wanting to write were forbidden, lest the male approved (392). Prohibited from working and not being able to contribute to the household as a proper wife, the narrator begins to feel helpless: So I... am absolutely forbidden to work until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas (390). The narrator s husband and brother both exert their own will over hers, forcing her to do what they think is the appropriate behavior for a sick woman. She has been given a schedule[d] prescription for each hour in the day; [John] takes all care from me (391). The way that she is required to act involves practically no exertion of her own free will. Instead, she is expected to obediently accept the fact that her own ideas are mere fancy, and only the opinions of the men in her life can be trusted. The fact that she is not allowed to think for herself is narrowing the extent of her authority in her life and of her autonomy. Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis and The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood The adolescent years are often associated with turbulence, illusion, and self discovery; however, Kingsley Amis s Lucky Jim and Margaret Atwood s The Edible Woman demonstrate that more often than not, the twenties possess these qualities to a greater extent than adolescence. The age period of the twenties often consists of relationships, employment and self issues and using the premise of these uncertain times, Amis and Atwood effectively satire various societal systems. Douglas Wu Chinese 35 TA: Teng Xu Taiwanese Resistance of Japanese Oppression through Literature The Taiwanese Literature Movement started in the 1930s while Taiwan was under Japanese occupation and was a combined effort of authors, writers, poets, and publishers to establish awareness and recognition of Taiwanese literature and culture. • 35. Positive And Negative Effects Of Gender Stereotyping Throughout society there are many different cultural and social perceptions that allow people to form judgmental beliefs about society. Encompassed within these perceptions are stereotypes and prejudice. Stereotypes and prejudice are examples of categorizations of people which allow our brains to fill in the types or interactions that may happen with people. There are different positive and negative forms of stereo types and prejudice that effect our interaction with individuals resulting in judgmental affliction upon individuals or groups. This essay will analyze and provide examples of the positive and negative effects of gender stereotyping and prejudice. Stereotyping can come in many different forms and have many different subjects. One form of stereotyping is of gender. Just about everyone holds stereotypes of women and men some positive and some negative. Women are more empathic and talkative; men are more competent and aggressive. For example, are women really more empathic than men? Which women? Empathic toward whom? When women s and men s actual behavior is observed systematically under a variety of conditions, the sexes do not differ in having feelings of empathy or in its expression (book, p. 365). Social pressures influence how we conform to these stereotypes, however it does create a problem when people are victimized by the negative stereotypes of their gender or group. There are different connotations that can be identified when stereotyping: positive, women are better caregivers and men are better breadwinners or money makers. These positive connotations can be taken negative towards the other gender or even their own gender men can be caretakers too and women can make money. In the early 1900 s there was a high discrimination towards women, women entering the work force worked in factory lines, while men worked management which resulted in lower pay for women kept the men in charge. Over the years gender roles have taken a turn and there is now a significant increase with women working and taking on management roles. Roles in society are different between genders and those differences either positive or negative will hopefully diminish after time. Prejudice often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sociological perspective that lead to the beginning of this genocide is extremely unique, as most ethnic conflict and violence in history has occurred due to a conflict within two ethnic groups beliefs and cultures, yet in the case of the Tutsi and Hutu, they had very similar racial and cultural traits. It was rather a division of socio economic status between the pastoralists being the Tutsi, and the agriculturists representing the Hutu. Even more, this difference between the Tutsi and Hutu is a open class system, as a Hutu could become a Tutsi if they acquired cattle and vice versa. The debate for both sides of the argument have been detrimental to the other and have yet to be copiously presented without a bias. While any organism can be genetically modified, the unrest between consumers and producers is centered around GMO crops because of the potential impact they could have on human health (Bushak, 2015). While the popularity of GMOs has only recently started to skyrocket, GMOs have been around for thousands of years. • 40. Words Affecting A Child s Second Language A child s first words, a jumble of sounds that no longer sound like gibberish, which cause grown men and women to turn into ecstatic five year olds, and show the beginning of a child s path in learning language. From that point and onwards the child only picks up more words, understanding their meaning and the context in which they can be used, but eventually that child speaks a different kind of first word. A first word that causes those same parents to cringe, and flinch in disgust, as these are the common reactions that society wants one to believe occur in response to the use of vulgar words. These words that are taboo in society in every culture, and all corners of the world, words that caused many to learn what soap tastes like, to know what it feels like to get an earful for saying a mouthful, and also understand the pain that come from the instinctive smack to the back of the head from a ... In fact by the age of two, most children begin picking up their first cuss word, and by the age of five will have attained most of the blasphemous language that they themselves will go onto use. These obscene words are in frequent use still, as in reality they play a vital function of helping to relieve stress, become more persuasive, and help manage pain. Already these various patterns of letters (known as words ) help us to communicate our emotions to others from love to hate, happiness to sadness, and many other deep and complex feelings. By excluding cuss words, it infringes on our ability to communicate and express ourselves, almost directly limiting a right to a freedom of speech. By as a society conforming and allowing these expressions to be used, it will help to expand the fundamental values of the human race by expanding this constitutional right as well as allowing us as a whole to feel the benefits these expletives can ... • 41. New Greatest Generation The New Greatest Generation 1. They are the most threatening and exciting generation since the Baby Boomers brought about social revolution, not because they re to take over the Establishment but they re growing up without one. (p.28, 2nd column) I do not agree with this quote at all. There has always been an establishment but us millennials do not use it. We are far more less social then any previous generation in existance. We tend to avoid people in public unless we really have too. We hide behide technology and for that we are not really able communicate in the real world. Without our technology we would not be able to function socially. 2. They have less civic engagement and lower political participation than any previous group. (p.28, 2nd column) Without a doubt in my mind I one hunderd percent agree that this quotation is correct. Millennials could care less about whats going on in our government. From my experience, millenials only care for themselves, they don t care whats going on around them. They don t care at a point where they are considering voting for Trump for laughs and giggles. 3. What Millennials are most famous for besides narcissism is its effect: entitlement. (p.28, 3rd column) Every millennial feels entitlement that they deserve without even giving it effort. They are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some Millennails want to break out of their shell and explore what the world s has in store for them. However, from my experience, Millennials are more about materialistic things. When there is a new apple product, almost every Millennial freak out and get excited for it. Millennials are happy with materialistic things. Along with being materialistic happy, not all millenials are cool and reserved. From my experience, they are stressed and anxious. Life is not easy at the moment and they experience the pain from it. They may be not all that passionate but no Millenial is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Essay about Criminal Law and The War on Drugs Criminal Law and The War on Drugs These records of wars, intrigues, factions, and revolutions, are so many collections of experiments, by which the politician or moral philosopher fixes the principles of his science, in the same manner as the physician or natural philosopher becomes acquainted with the nature of plants, minerals, and other external objects, by the experiments which he forms concerning them. (David Hume.)2 Our long armed and hairy ancestors had no idea of redress beyond vengeance, or of justice beyond mere individual reprisal. 3 To determine what constitutes criminal law, is, as one learned judge has opined, a work of art, it is something that may be easier to recognize than define ... 4 ... That effect may be in relation to social, economic or political interests; and the legislature has had in mind to suppress the evil or to safeguard the interest threatened. 8 And further, it cannot be neither a static catalogue of offences nor order of sanctions. The evolving and transforming types and patterns of social and economic activities are constantly calling for new penal controls and limitations and that new modes of enforcement and punishment adapted to the changing conditions are not to be taken as being equally within the ambit of parliamentary power is, in my opinion, not seriously arguable. 9 In the relatively recent case of RJR Macdonald v. Canada (1995), the Supreme Court of Canada, it was determined that the exercise of the power to make an act a criminal one, a test is to be applied; one of substance, not form. 10 To be fully fledged criminal law, the act prohibited must pose a significant, grave and serious risk of harm to public health, morality, safety or security ... And, so, how does this established judicial view apply to the business of keeping in check those substances which may prove to be harmful to the individuals who misuse them? As to the nature of the various illegitimate drugs and their effect on human beings well, I shall have to leave that to the medical doctors; but, I just simply wonder, what is so wrong with ...
