Personal Roles In The Gus Chronicles, By Charles Appelstein
Charles Appelstein is a highly respected social worker. He wrote The Gus Chronicles about a thirteen
year old boy and his perspective on several topics. Gus is a victim of childhood abuse and offers a
look into a variety of things such as residential treatment centers. Despite being difficult to read at
times, overall the book was extremely insightful, educational, and an excellent read. In the following
paper I will discuss the author Charles, the book, as well as my personal opinions. Charles D.
Appelstein, M.S.W., is the President of Appelstein Training Resources (ATR). Along with his wife,
Cheryl, and their daughter, Julie, Charles currently lives in New Hampshire. He is an active outdoors
man in his spare time (American Entertainment International Speakers Bureau, Inc., 2017). According
to Learn.org (2017), M.S.W stands for Master of Social Work. It also states that an individual
possessing a master s degree in social work works in social services settings such as schools,
hospitals, as well as government agencies. LLC (ATR) implements professional strength based

assisting children and youth who are struggling with emotional as well as behavioral challenges

Modernism And Postmodernism
Modernism is very troublesome to define with clarity because of the fact that the term revolves around
various genres of movements be it artistic or philosophical. Nonetheless, there are some primary
beliefs of the Modernist genres that appeal in someway or the other to the various movements and also
the writers.
Modernism in general can broadly be described as the deviation from the ancient and classic manner .
(Johnson, J., The New Royal and Universal English Dictionary, Millard, 1763). It is the radical
movement away from the past in search of new styles of expression. It refers to a reforming
movement away from the traditional forms in various fields like architecture, art, music, and literature
during the late 19th century and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
1997.)
As post modernism was a direct reaction to modernism, the two along with their respective theorists
often criticize each other and often justify their views in various debates and discourses.
Habermas and the Unfinished Project of Modernity is a collection of essays, which show us the
discourse between modernism and Post modernism. Jürgen Habermas is a German social theorist who
is also a strong defender of modernity. He vigorously counteracts various criticisms made by post
modernist theorists on modernism. Many intellectuals in the modern day have become skeptical about
the emancipatory potential of modernity but Habermas still believes and continues to insist on the
idealistic utopian potential of modernity as the child of enlightenment . As modernism take has
influences from democracy and reason, Habermas sees it as an unfinished project. By this Habermas is
trying to state that there is still so much to be done in the domain of modernism before contemplating
a move to the post modern world.
Marx influenced Habermas as he had an association with the Frankfurt School of social thought, but
nonetheless believed that Marx s views needed to be thoroughly changed in order to make them
genuinely contemporary and modern. Considering this, Habermas came up with two important
theories namely The Theory of Communication, and The Theory of Rationalization of System and
Life world. In his theory of communication, Habermas assigns himself to redefine the Marxian

Status And Social Status
It is said that humans are social beings and we want to connect with other people, therefore it should
come as no surprise that social interaction is an essential part of our everyday lives. Social interaction
is a dynamic sequence of social actions between two or more individuals or groups and the foundation
of social structures. Social structures are patterns that guide our behaviour in everyday life and there
are two building blocks of social structure, status and role. A status is a culturally defined social
position that is a part of our social identity that defines our relationship to others. Statuses can be
ascribed, achieved or master. An ascribed status is fixed and involuntary, it is a status we are often
born into such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we choose to become a parents, husband and wife also become father and mother and the boy or girl
born is given the status of baby. As a mother and father, each has a responsibility to love, protect and
teach their baby about right and wrong, how to speak and use language, both verbal and non verbal to
communicate. Parents have an important role as a baby s first teacher, the foundation socialization. In
Belize, as a multi cultural nation, babies may be taught by parents to speak the language of their
culture for example Mennonites may speak German or Spanish, the Garinagu speak Garifuna and the
Hispanics speak Spanish. However, as an English speaking nation, mothers and fathers also teach their
baby to speak English so that they can interact with other people in society. Eventually as a baby
grows into a toddler, an understanding develops about the role of a mother and father and the toddler
learns that parents should be given respect which influences the interaction between parents and
children throughout their lifetime. In our society and societies around the world, children are taught
from an early age to not only to show respect for parents but to show respect for elders as well. If we
were to think back to our childhood, we would remember being afraid to answer our parent questions
or commands in an ill or threatening manner. A sure that we bid them time of day to our elders and
said please and thank you.

Why Nursery Rhymes Are Good For Children
Why Nursery Rhymes Are Good For Children
Intro Nursery rhyme; a short rhyme for children that often tells a story. For over 200 years, nursery
rhymes have had a great impact on children and their minds. Nursery rhymes make kids laugh, give
them a sense of imagination, and boost their early vocabulary development.
Para #1 To begin, nursery rhymes are great at making kids laugh. The rhyme Humpty Dumpty is just
one of the many laughter filled rhymes that just simply make children giggle. Afterall, as the saying
goes, laughter is the best medicine! When children laugh, they produce chemicals in their bodies that
relieve stress, and help their physical or mental health. According to Charlie Chaplin, A day without
laughter is a day wasted.

Riddles Of The Sphinx Essay
Riddles of the Sphinx is critically acclaimed and extremely hard to understand feature which uses
several interesting perspective of story telling. This movie generalizes the broad topic of feminism in
playful demonstration through camera lens. Interesting long 360 pans and close ups on Egyptian
Sphinx makes the movie outstandingly unique and delicate. Mainly focused in a story of a mother,
movie revolves around so many factors trying to make comparison between existing examples and
feminism theory. In Riddles of the Sphinx Mulvey and Woolen create an altogether different project
for the mother within the organizing system of the gaze.

Pan moves us slowly along entire room and kitchen. This sense of being closer to the characters tends
us to predict what might be the next move or who else or what else we could see in the house. We also
see Louise and Anna outside the home, Louise at work as a phone operator at a switchboard and Anna
at day care. Louise converses with other women workers, especially her friend Maxine, about their
working conditions and the possibility of having child care on the worksite. Visible in the background
of their break room is a poster depicting dunes within a desert scene an image reminiscent of the films
opening desert scene with the woman as sphinx suggesting power and change from previous authority.
In one of the following scenes, Louise s ex husband asks them to watch a film he is editing. Artist,
writer and theorist Mary Kelly appears in the film reading from her journal about problems she is
having regarding her son going to day care. She is wearing a dark shirt with lighter crescent shapes,
the same that documents her own postpartum Project (1973 79) maternal project.
At that time Kelly was in the midst of producing her groundbreaking project, whose concerns about
the formation of a maternal space in language and culture dovetail with those being explored by
Mulvey and Wollen. Riddles of the Sphinx also discusses on how social issues coexist with the
psychic space of maternal. In a following scene the mothers

Graham Greene s Use of Characterization in A Little Place...
Graham Greene s Use of Characterization in A Little Place off the Edgware Road
In A little place off the Edgware Road there are two focal characters. We learn the name of only one of
these characters and the other remains unnamed throughout the story. This is the first interesting thing
about Greene s use of characterization. By not naming one of the characters we see him as more
mysterious and it helps us to realise at the end that he is just a figment of Craven s imagination.
Greene writes in the third person rather than giving us the ultimate insight into Craven s head by
writing in the first person. This also gives us a certain distance from Craven and this is much like real
life as we always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recent research on the life of Graham Greene has shown that he hired many prostitutes. This is
reflected in Craven s view that you need money for love, which is what Greene also believed.
Craven is also losing his faith in God.. He asks himself, Why should he be asked to believe in the
resurrection of this body he wanted to forget? We also get the impression from this Craven might be
old and his body decaying. But this decay of his body is not merely in the physical sense. It has a
spiritual meaning too. In the Christian religion resurrection of the body upon the return of Christ is an
important theme. Again this is interesting because it gives us another insight into Greene himself. He
came from a very strict Catholic background which he rebelled against. Consequently much of his
work is about guilt, conscience and the effects of straying from godliness.
Craven finds posters advertising a theatre which is showing a film. This theatre is much like Craven.
Old, decaying and tired. The film he goes to see is about death and suicide. I think that the fact that
this is the only film that is showing is meant to show that death is inevitable and unavoidable and there
is no choice about it, it just happens. There is an interesting line from the film Craven is watching
which says, I am not afraid of death, Lucius in your

The Roll Of A Leader
Dominic Harris
Nash, Becknell
11/11/2015
The roll of a leader is more than basically holding an initiative position or being able to lead.
Everybody is fit for being a leader, yet not everybody practices their initiative capacities. Every
individual s concept of initiative is distinctive. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and
being a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and Grace College men s soccer team
has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership rapidly than what it was four years ago.
According John Carter, Director of the Indiana Olympic Development Program, ODP is a national

I have such respect for me parents so I work hard to not forget what they taught me at home. So when
I play with ODP I learn to understand other player to be a better captain and I work hard on and of the

led by other so I try to work harder to set a good leading example with other around me.
My own philosophy of authority is the ability to impact change through showing others how it is done,
taking activity, and inspiring others. There have been numerous things that have affected my theory of
initiative. Something that has affected me as leader is this values I life by now. One of my center
values is responsibility. As a leader, it is vital I comprehend what to do and what is anticipated from
me. When I am dependable as a leader, those I am attempting to lead are all the more ready to do what
I request that they do. Another of my values is respect. Previously, I am constantly pleasant and listen
to the thoughts of others regardless of the fact that they are not the least demanding individuals to be
around. I would say, it has been simpler to procure the admiration of my constituents and respect them
as well. My central beliefs will continue to influence my behavior as a leader in the future to come.
The development of my leadership philosophy has also been a result of watching my leaders. One
leader that has affected me a lot has been my father. I never

Dislodged cells undergo a Special type of cell death named anoikis based on loss of cell matrix
interaction mediated by intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathway. In intrinsic pathway after cell ECM

Mesenchymal and amoeboid movement. Motile cells with Mesenchymal form exhibit pro survival

Figural Statues In Ancient Rome
Rome was a powerful empire that took substantial pleasure in creating lifelike figural statues that they
learned from Greek sculptures. However, their unique eyes caught beauty in the imperfection of the
human form instead of washing them over with idealism. There are many surviving statues that show
just how realism played an important role for Roman artist. Contrary to the Greeks, during the
republic and imperial eras, Rome strived to perfect realism, which one sees with their figural busts and
full standing sculptures.
Firstly, the strive to capture literal details can be seen with the way Romans created their busts for
both men and woman. A bust is a sculpture of just a person s head, neck and chest. Busts were very
popular in Roman times and their focus was creating realistic ... Show more content on

Romans are known for their outstanding lifelike full figure statues that replicate the person flawlessly.
While they created figural sculptors of their emperors to celebrate their victories, they still focused on
actual details rather than erasing their imperfections. The bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius riding
horseback, even weathered as it is, one can see creases carved into both man and horse. As well as,
both look like they were captured in a moment of action, which is depicted with the horses raised hoof
and slightly turned head. Another example of this capturing of realism is of a Roman aristocrat
holding the busts of his ancestors. Not only does this show how this was similar to today s
photographs and how important having a bust of a loved one was to the ancient Romans, but the
sculpture itself captures an older gentleman. He was carved to represent who he was at that moment
with balding head and wrinkles. Keeping the sculptures as real looking as possible was a way of
keeping a record of reality and it proved to be extremely important to them

A Penny Saved
A penny saved is a penny earned is one of the most well known sayings in American culture, or,
perhaps, used to be one of the most well known sayings in America. According to Jenny Che, an
associate business editor at The Huffington Post, America has a serious problem when it comes to
financial literacy and the problem starts with the kids in the school system who are not being taught
how to manage money. Che states in her April 2016 blog post titled, America Is Not Teaching Kids
How To Manage Money. And That s A Problem, that the United States was ranked far lower than most
people would expect when it comes to financial literacy, and little is being done to resolve this issue.
Through alarming observations and data, Che successfully makes her point: America is not integrating
financial curriculum into their education system, and this must change. Although Che s post is fewer
than 500 words, she presents an impressive amount of well supported information. A large portion of
her post focuses on recent studies and research to back her argument, building ethos. All of the sources
have been published in very recent years, adding a consistent and current time period to her argument.
She poses statistics such as the amount of debt American students have accumulated, the staggering
number of people who are behind on their loan payments, and the small number of schools who are
actively incorporating financial education curriculum into their system. She references an extensive

Building America Term 1
October 26, 2017
Patrick Henry and His Influence Patrick Henry was an American lawyer born in the colony of Virginia
while it was under Britain s rule. He is mostly known for his rebellion and his call to action against
British rule. Henry s call to action was through a speech known as Give me liberty, or give me death!
This speech was an inspiring to many people throughout Early America and it was vital in convincing
the convention to pass a resolution delivering Virginian troops for the Revolutionary War. He is seen
as someone similar to Martin Luther King Jr. Patrick Henry was born on May 29, 1736 in Hanover

They wanted to do so by allowing payment in paper money at two pence per pound when tobacco sold

defended Virginia against claims for back wages, vetoes of laws for the good, and securing a jury
award of one penny damages. Handling all of this for Virginia had boosted his popularity. Patrick was
now deeply into Virginian Politics. Later on, in his life he went on to become the governor of the state.
This was big for him since he was born here. It wasn t till 1776 that he won the first of three
consecutive gubernatorial terms. He remained in office till June 1, 1779. In 1795, George Washington
offered him the position of Secretary of State but he politely declined.
In 1775, he made his famous speech, Give me liberty or give me death! He had the talent to take his
political ideology and translate into the language of a common man. Everyone knew that he opposed
the British so if he were to make a public statement on them it wouldn t be all that surprising but it
was. Patrick Henry made it clear that a war was on the horizon and it was going to happen no matter
what.
As soon as Patrick Henry delivered his speech in Virginia, it left people questioning the British rule.
Part of the speech was even specifically addressed to the president, Peyton Randolph at the time. This
showed the seriousness of his speech. He was into

Disadvantages Of Securitization
As securitization seems to be a lucrative way for banks to not only enhance liquidity and diversify risk
but also improves their performance considerable incentive problems occurred during the turmoil and
among the different parties. Those incentive problems led to information asymmetries and moral
hazard among the involved stakeholders .As the Bank/Originator creates reference pool sells them to
the bankruptcy remote trust (such as Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac) Bankruptcy remote trust buys
reference pool and securitizes it sells them to the capital market where potential investors exists to
purchase securities purchase of securities by investors 6 gap between mortgage originators and
investors increases, it reduces the incentives for lenders to screen mortgage applicants thoroughly.
During the turmoil banks had more and better information about the Mortgage Backed Securities and
their performance value in contrast to third parties as they knew more about the mortgage applicant
and the underlying mortgage loan .As bank incentives are to issue more mortgage loans and then sell
them to bankruptcy remote trusts to securitize them, they did not bear the risk of the mortgage default

A Brief Look at the Human Heart
The heart is one of the most important organs in the entire human body. It is really nothing more than
a pump, composed of muscle which pumps blood throughout the body, beating approximately 72
times per minute of our lives. The heart pumps the blood, which carries all the vital materials which
help our bodies function and removes the waste products that we do not need. It is so essential to our
survival that any malfunction or congenital or acquired defect can lead to major complications and
possibly death. Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a congenital heart disease that affects the
membranous part of the interventricular septum. A defect in the interventricular septum allows
communication between the systemic and pulmonary circulations. As a result, flow moves from a
region of high pressure to a region of low pressure. In other words, blood flows from the left ventricle
to the right ventricle, hence the name left to right shunt. There are various degrees of severity for this
disease by having either a small or large shunt. Patients with a small shunt are asymptomatic and their
life prognosis is very optimistic compared to those with a large shunt. In the latter case, a medium to
large shunt increases pulmonary blood flow, which causes pulmonary disease and may cause cardiac
failure. This congenital heart disease is the most common of form of congenital cardiovascular
anomalies. Other forms of congenital heart disease (CHD) include atrial septal defect (ASD),

Us And Mexico Border
On August 13, 1998, a group of seven individuals were found huddled together about twenty five
miles away from the U.S. Mexico border. However, these people were no longer suffering. They were
found dead, after failing to cross into California illegally. Among them was Julio César Gallegos, a
husband and father, whose story, like many others, has largely attributed to U.S. law enforcement
policies along the border. Many policies have been made about the U.S. Mexico border due to the
death of migrants, like Gallegos. These laws have affected many individuals and are still in use today.

In 1998, Julio César Gallegos tried to cross again. This time he and several others would not be so
lucky. The group was waiting to be picked up by a vehicle that never came. The extreme heat killed
them in a matter of weeks, and were soon found. Groups like Gallegos risk their lives each day to
enter the United States without authorization from Mexico. This helps explain why the boundary
simultaneously serves as both an obstacle and a gateway functions that are both contradictory and
complimentary (78). The border is a gateway that allows individuals to travel between both countries
with legal documentation. On the other hand, the boundary is an obstacle because it is a danger to the
people who try to cross illegally. That is why U.S. law enforcement policies have been put in place.
These policies have changed the way people travel to and from Mexico and the United States. By
strengthening the enforcement efforts along the border, law enforcement has made it safer for all
migrants who are looking to enter the U.S. legally. The effect of U.S. immigration enforcement is not
so much to stop migration, but to define the status of people as subordinate once they have arrived
(111). Many people were blocked from entering the country, such as imbeciles, homosexuals, and
contract laborers. Although, it has been the nonwhite, poor, minorities that have been, and still are, the

Roman Shades
As summer fades, the temperature outside starts to decrease on a seemingly daily basis. Soon, warm
sunshine gives way to cool crisp air and flurries of colorful leaves fill the yard. It s the perfect time to
think about doing some seasonal changes to your décor. One of the quickest, easiest changes you can
make is new window treatments. Changing out lighter curtains, or blinds, for roman shades will not
only give your room a fresh look, but it will also help to insulate your home from the impending cold.
Huge Variety of Materials
Roman shades can be made from fabric, textiles, bamboo and even wood, making them an extremely
versatile window treatment. Whether your home is conventional, historic, modern or eclectic, you re

They do not require a toolbox full of tools, curtain rods, or hooks. In fact, the only tools needed are a
measuring tape, pencil and screwdriver. First, you will want to remove the current window treatment
and associated hardware. Next, measure the width of the window to determine placement of the
brackets. Use the pencil to mark the holes where screws will be. You ll then use your screwdriver to
drive the screws into place, being sure to keep the bracket straight. Insert the shade into the bracket
and enjoy your new window treatment.
Insulating Properties
Heavier roman shades are the best option for fall and winter, for obvious reasons. Many roman shades
are made using multiple layers of fabric and batting to create an insulated layer. They act much like a
blanket, keeping out cold air that permeates through glass and help to block drafts that make their way
through seams. Some have a white side and a darker side. The lighter side, when facing outward,
reflects sunlight in warmer months. The darker side, conversely, attracts the heat from the sun, helping
to heat your home in cooler times.

Introduction A trip to 42nd street circa 1990 was certainly no destination fit for a family. Walls of
graffiti adorn the peeling awnings of storefronts and theatres promise private dances and live nude
women. Porn shops dotted the city block with colorful invitations to sex hotlines and signs prohibiting
entry to anyone under the age of eighteen (Wollman 445). Decades earlier, during the Prohibition era,
speakeasies and brothels lined the city, creating New York s red light district. Today s Times Square,
however, bares no hint of resemblance to its former image of sleaze and mystery. Neon lights that
once illustrated silhouettes of burlesque dancers have since been fashioned into the welcoming faces
of cartoon characters. Signs visible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The commencement of renovations, then, relied heavily on the support of the city and state of New
York s investment, and because of the potential profit to be made from tourism, the state obliged
(Wollman 1). This investment greatly contributed to The Walt Disney Company s decision to lease the
New Amsterdam Theatre. Prior to 1994, the theatre spent decades without use and had fallen into
decay. Professor of Performance Studies and academic, Elizabeth Wollman detailed the deal between
Disney and the city in an article analyzing the interaction between theatre and corporations. She
explained:
Disney agreed to spend approximately $6 million to renovate the huge, ninety five year old New
Amsterdam on 42nd Street, Disney would enjoy exclusive use of the New Amsterdam, which it now
occupies under a long term, forty nine year lease and currently uses to house the musical version of
The Lion King. The city and state agreed to lend Disney an additional $28 million in low interest
loans in return for 2 percent of all ticket receipts from shows staged at the theater. (Wollman 447)
With its acquisition of the theatre Disney opened Beauty and the Beast, a stage musical based on the
company s popular musical film, and not long after its opening did investors such as Time Warner and
Madame Tussauds hop on the 42nd street bandwagon (Nelson 74). The reopening of the New
Amsterdam Theatre marked a transformation to the New Times Square which, as

Analysis Of Theatre Of Cruelty
You are casually taking a stroll near a bridge on a bright sunny day and you happen to stop to take in
the gentle breeze and soak in the sun. To your right a middle aged man hops over the railing of the
bridge and is now standing on the edge. You faint and you never find out the faith of the man. Not
knowing what has happened to the man on the ledge, is how we re left feeling at the end of Death and
the Maiden, we re left guessing at what has happened to Roberto and the state of mind that Paulina is
left in. To figure out what Ariel Dorfman wants us to believe, it is important to look at Theatre of
Cruelty and the ghosts of our past. Examined more closely, Paulina seems to be imagining Roberto s
presence in the concert hall. Theatre of Cruelty is a theatre practice created by Antonin Artaud. The
purpose of this practice is to present real problems and have the audience reflect on how they would
act in these given situations. Theatre of Cruelty highlights the lives of those who were tormented as a
result of those in power. This leads to audience members walking out and reanalyzing their own lives
and actions (Cash). Considering Theatre of Cruelty, Roberto must be imagined because of the final
monologue by Paulina and the stage directions that follow. She poses several questions to Roberto, as
she reaches the climactic moment of shooting Roberto and asks, And why does it always have to be
people like me who have to sacrifice, why are we the ones who have to make concessions

Success Is Counted Sweetest
Only those who have experienced failure can truly appreciate success, is the central theme that Emily
Dickinson follows in her poem entitled Success is counted sweetest. This theme is manifested not only
through her encouraging tone, but also through several literary devices, such as imagery, metaphors
and allusions. Dickinson begins the poem by restating the title, which is followed by an example
where nectar symbolizes success. Next, she writes about a solider that hears the winning team
celebrating. However, he hears the victorious group as he is lying on the ground dying. From this,
some may say that the poem is about how people who have been defeated, appreciate success more
than those who simply win. Although, this is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So clear of victory. From the start Dickinson is talking about the soldiers who have died. Then she
addresses how the soldiers that lived can not begin to fathom the value of success since they were able
to go home. They did not lose their lives as other soldiers did, and the ones who did could only wish to
exchange places with the ones who survived. In addition to Dickinson using tone to emphasize her
point, she also incorporated various literary devices, similar to imagery, metaphors and allusions.
Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, The distant strains of triumph, Burst
agonized and clear! This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the sound of victory in the near
distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of sorrow within the readers, since
they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is demonstrated in the lines two and
three when she says, To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest need. In this instance, nectar symbolizes
success. Thus, in order for anyone to reap victory, they must overcome an obstacle. Yet, to fully
interpret this, one has to analyze the meaning of the metaphor, which makes the readers think deeper
and enables the to get a better understanding of message that is being portrayed. In the same way, the
allusions were applied

The Ethics of Crowdsourcing
Stephanie Lee
Ethics of Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing ; Innovation or Exploitation?
Abstract
Crowdsourcing is the concept of mass collaboration of external outsourced tasks typically from an
institution to its community (Howe, 2005). This paper explores the two sides of crowd sourcing;
whether this net enabled community collaboration is accelerating innovation or exploiting the laborers
with menial tasks of little to no benefit through an analysis of Soylent, one of the latest innovations in
crowd sourcing using John Rawls Theory of Justice, the Veil of Ignorance, I aim to demonstrate how
can we all benefit from crowdsourcing and harness the true power of collective intelligence and mass
collaboration just by maintaining a fine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1714, the British Government was stuck for a solution to what they called The Longitude Problem
which made sailing difficult and deadly (killing 1,000s of seamen every year) (Thomas, 2011).
Inaccurate Longitude charts were causing sailors to be lost at sea, and in some cases people starved.
Seeking innovation, the British Government offered £20,000 for people to invent a solution (£20,000
in 1714 is around $4.7 million dollars in 2010) (Thomas, 2011). Innovative scientists and sailors came
together to formulate information that is more accurate. This is possibly the first ever example of
crowdsourcing; thus, solving the problems for many sailors. The contest was considered unsolvable by
many. John Harrison, the son of a carpenter, won the Longitude contest. Harrison invented the marine
chronometer (i.e. an accurate, vacuum sealed pocket watch) (Thomas, 2011). His knowledge and
brilliance helped solve navigation in the 1700 s. The aristocrats were hesitant to award Harrison the
prize but eventually paid him the £20,000 (Thomas, 2011). This example of crowdsourcing is a great
one because it highlights one of the principles of crowdsourcing innovation and creativity can come
from anywhere (Thomas, 2011). In the early 18th century, being able to navigate accurately was the
difference of returning home or not. Getting lost on a transoceanic voyage did not just mean that a

Long Duration Human Space Flight Missions
Introduction: Long duration human space flight missions are next big thing in space that have capture
our imagination for years. Highly sustainable habitats are necessary to support long duration human
space flight missions as it impractical to re supply logistics (Shaw and Weck, 2014). At the time when
national space policies have given top priority to human space flight missions, study of closed loop
habitats are essential. Thus, it is essential to review development in this area and discuss various
issues related to political, technical, engineering, economic aspects of closed loop life support

Most of the life support systems for isolated environment use physiological process. The use of bio
regenerative process is relatively new. Bio regenerative process currently in use in terrestrial confined
environment include controlled plant growth chamber in Antarctica and biosphere 2. Plant growth has
been tested in ISS but only for scientific study and not as a part of life support system. For the future
manned space mission, hybrid life support systems in which biological components are used at the
same time with physiochemical technology in a balanced mechanism for controlling life support
parameters. Hybrid life support systems are envisioned for sustainable long term space habitats but
there are concerns about the reliability of bio regenerative process incorporated to the physiochemical
systems. The optimal combination of physiochemical and bio generative life support systems needs
tradeoff among different factors. Numerous bio regenerative technology should be tested and
performance should be evaluated to characterize it. A common study could be about food subsystem
and computation of equivalent system mass. NASA have given top priority to the long duration
manned space flight missions. Asteroid retrieval mission and manned mars mission have become long
term set goals. This has motivated systematic examination and engineering of sustainable closed loop
life support systems. NASA has developed road maps for development of necessary technologies.

Pliny The Elder Summary
INDUSTRY S KNOWLEDGE OF THE HARMFUL EFFECTS
Numerous authors believe that the risks associated with asbestos exposure were known more than
2000 years ago when Greek Geographer Strabo pointed out that slaves who wove asbestos into clothes
developed a sickness of the lung and that a similar observation was also made on asbestos miners, by
Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist.3,9,120 However, Browne et al describes Strabo s and Pliny s
stories to be inaccurate due to mistranslation. He points out that Strabo was referring to arsenic
disulphide, and that Elder Pliny was referring to sulphide of mercury, and not asbestos.121 Regardless
of the accuracy of these anecdotes, there is a myriad of evidence of early knowledge of asbestos s
health danger. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Daniel Jenkins, testified for the asbestos insulation manufacturers for several years. Also, Dr. Leary, a
physician specialized in chest diseases who worked for Travelers Insurance Company, diagnosed
Tomplait with emphysema, and did not mention asbestosis. Leary s finding was completely refuted
when Dr. Selikoff reviewed Tomplait s X rays and said that his diagnosis of extensive pulmonary
asbestosis is as certain as anything can be in medicine . Asbestos manufacturing companies and their
lawyer similarly, denied knowledge of the association between asbestos exposure and lung disease,
and argued consistently in every lawsuit that this association wasn t known until Selikoff s landmark
article that was published in 1964. It was made conspicuous, however, that literally hundreds of
studies were published in the 1920s and 1930s on the association between asbestos exposure and
asbestosis. Stephenson was also able to compile a bibliography of 86 articles on asbestosis most of
them published before 1938. Another example of the unethical conduct was what Dr. Cooper (an
occupational health professor) said about not being able to have known that a 15% asbestos product
would be unsafe in 1961, and that the early studies conducted in England, were on workers who were
exposed to a lot heavier asbestos dust. Dr. Cooper also referred to a study conducted in 1945 by
Fleisher et al that found low incidence (0.3%) of asbestosis among asbestos pipe covers (3 out of
1074). Despite the low incidence, the authors recommended the use of exhaust ventilation and to keep
the total dust concentration low. In Fleisher s study125, the majority (95%) of workers had been
employed for less than 10 years, way less than the needed latency period to develop the disease. It is

In order to examine the first research question, which focuses on whether the two sets of
environmental behaviors are essentially the same or not they are systematically analyzed using
confirmatory factor analysis. The foundation of this analysis relies on the fact that environmental
behavior may take many forms and that those who are concerned about the environment may engage
in some behaviors more so than other forms. This possible difference in engagement may be due to
opportunity structures that help or hinder the feasibility of engaging. For example, if one does not
have access to a curbside recycling program, it would follow that the likelihood of engaging in this
specific behavior would be lower than someone who did. This is just one ... Show more content on

this is that in some cases, the modification indices had two suggested paths to add and regardless of
which one was added the model would fit the same, or nearly the same hundredths of a point

Llewellyn Moss, a welder and Vietnam veteran, who happens to stumble upon several murdered

seize the money and consequently sets off a chase for his life against the old hand sheriff Ed Tom Bell

Cause Of Air Pollution Essay
Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause
harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment
or built environment, into the atmosphere.
The atmosphere is a complex dynamic natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on planet
Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletiondue to air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human
health as well as to the Earth s ecosystems.
Indoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed as two of the world s worst pollution problems in

Smog is a kind of air pollution; the word smog is a portmanteau of smoke and fog. Classic smog
results from large amounts of coal burning in an area caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur
dioxide. Modern smog does not usually come from coal but from vehicular and industrial emissions
that are acted on in the atmosphere by ultraviolet light from the sun to form secondary pollutants that
also combine with the primary emissions to form photochemical smog.
 Ground level ozone (O3) formed from NOx and VOCs. Ozone (O3) is a key constituent of the
troposphere (it is also an important constituent of certain regions of the stratosphere commonly known
as the Ozone layer). Photochemical and chemical reactions involving it drive many of the chemical
processes that occur in the atmosphere by day and by night. At abnormally high concentrations
brought about by human activities (largely the combustion of fossil fuel), it is a pollutant, and a
constituent of smog.
 Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) similarly formed from NOx and VOCs.
Minor air pollutants include:
 A large number of minor hazardous air pollutants. Some of these are regulated in USA under the
Clean Air Act and in Europe under the Air Framework Directive.
 A variety of persistent organic pollutants, which can attach to particulate matter.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that are resistant to

The Inhumanity Of Zoos
Masters of Disguise: The Inhumanity of Zoos
Every year approximately 175 million people go to aquariums, and zoos to spectate and ponder at the
vast number of wildlife from every corner of the world ( Static Brain, n.p.). Little do visitors know
that they are witnessing firsthand the imprisonment and inhumane treatment of innocent animals.
Wildlife should not be kept captive where they are exposed to overwhelming isolation, a shortened life
span, and in the rare occasion when they are released back into the wild deprived of natural instincts to
help them survive.
Similar to humans, animals are living creatures who require interaction with their own kind; however,
when they are kept in captivity these animals are frequently exposed to isolation. Wild animals
commonly live in groups, whether it be a pride of lions, pack of wolves or a pod of whales. One
particular example pertains to the natural grouping of elephants in the wild versus the complete
solitary environment in which they are kept in when captive. That being said, elephants naturally live
within large family groups and are one of the most socially complex animals outside of man. Yet in
zoos they are kept either alone or with only one or two other unrelated elephants ( Los Angeles Times,
n.p.). As if removing them out of their natural habitat was not enough, zoos separate animal s families
and place them in different exhibits with other animals they are not accustomed to; thus, each
individual is left feeling

German Soldiers Going To War Analysis
For those trying to rouse a nation to war this type of psychological pressure was systematic and
deliberate. It was to be repeated and reinforced many times by peers, parents and even children. A well
known poster of the time showed children questioning a man why he was not going to war after all it
was common knowledge that German soldiers delighted in killing children and raping women! Stories
exposing these atrocities had little basis in fact, but some of the most outrageous were seized upon and
circulated in an attempt to maintain this frenzy for war. For some weeks Belgium had been depicted as
a violated maiden and the hysteria darkened to hatred of all things German. Stories spread that
German troops had tied Belgian nuns to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The History of Microsoft Windows
Microsoft was co founded by Paul Allen and Bill Gates in 1975. Microsoft had a huge vision of
putting a computer on every desk top and in every home. In June 1980 IBM approached Microsoft
about a project called CHESS . They came up with a new operating system called MS DOS this
introduced a whole new language to the general public, since the system brought difficulty to people
to read they set out to find a better way to make an operating system. In 1982 1983 Microsoft becomes
the first to work on the new operating system the code name is interface manager, but they then decide
in 1983 on the name windows because it describes and fits the description of a computer screen. It was
said that skeptics called it vaporware. It took two years to develop windows after it was thought up. In
November of 1985 Microsoft ships out Windows 1.0, with this software you were able to navigate

Internship At The Evanston Vineyard
1. Background
I serve as a pastoral intern at the Vineyard Christian Church of Evanston. This marks my second year
of internship at this church. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of becoming familiar with the
culture of a non denominational setting of the church. The Evanston Vineyard comprises of 57 nations
of the world. The church is not only unique because of this particular diversity (for example, there is a
Spanish speaking congregation that convenes every Sunday in the La Viña auditorium, one of multiple
auditoria in this church) but also because of its hospitable and welcoming environment. This church
context serves as the backdrop for the events and discussions that comprise the remainder of this

Intrapersonal Reflection: Cultivating Self Awareness
During my conversation with Muria, I was mindful of learning about her as a person her interests, her
passion and her serious mindedness about what kind of help she would like to offer to the church and
why. I wanted to encourage her in every possible way I could, and understand what differences could
lie in various church roles and ministries. I advised her talking to the senior pastor and the executive
pastor so as to avoid providing any extra information about the church administration.
Since Muria is not a church member at the Evanston Vineyard, whether it is the English speaking
congregation, the La Viña congregation or the Neighborhood Campus, (this is name of a church
campus at new location), I thought it might be best if I did not personally announce any authority on
her .Though I am a pastoral intern at this church, I am not the sole authority. My conversation was a
source of knowledge to her like the contents of a book that can help her receive some synopsis if it is a
good fit for her or not. Furthermore, if she would be interested in reading and learning about a hope
that can help her discover if that knowledge is of any use to her not. Since this was my second time

Tanks
Jack Elmes
How did tank innovation impact warfare and the soldiers who fought in the trenches during World War
One?
World War One was known as the First World War or The Great War. It began on the 28th of July
1914 and lasted until the 11th of November 1918. Thirty countries were involved in the war. Over nine
million soldiers died and twenty one million were wounded. Undeniably World War One was one of
the biggest and most devastating wars in history. Trench warfare took those who signed up by

know it. Tanks were a very important part of WW1 as they increased mobility on the front line and
broke the stalemate of trench warfare. The first tank ever used in military conflict was at the battle of
Flers Courcelette in September 1916. The first prototype tank came out in 1915 by the British it was
called little Willie, weighed 14 tons and could only travel at two miles per hour. This tank was not
used in warfare. Big Bertha was the most famous tank it had a 48 ton gun capable of firing a shell over
9 miles. It took 200 men several hours to assemble the gun.

LLC (ATR) implements professional strength based training, consultation, publications, CDs, as well as DVDs to anyone who works with children and/or youth experiencing emotional and behavioral issues. Jürgen Habermas is a German social theorist who is also a strong defender of modernity. He vigorously counteracts various criticisms made by post modernist theorists on modernism. Many intellectuals in the modern day have become skeptical about the emancipatory potential of modernity but Habermas still believes and continues to insist on the idealistic utopian potential of modernity as the child of enlightenment . As modernism take has influences from democracy and reason, Habermas sees it as an unfinished project. By this Habermas is trying to state that there is still so much to be done in the domain of modernism before contemplating a move to the post modern world. Marx influenced Habermas as he had an association with the Frankfurt School of social thought, but nonetheless believed that Marx s views needed to be thoroughly changed in order to make them genuinely contemporary and modern. Social structures are patterns that guide our behaviour in everyday life and there are two building blocks of social structure, status and role. Parents have an important role as a baby s first teacher, the foundation socialization. In Belize, as a multi cultural nation, babies may be taught by parents to speak the language of their culture for example Mennonites may speak German or Spanish, the Garinagu speak Garifuna and the Hispanics speak Spanish. Eventually as a baby grows into a toddler, an understanding develops about the role of a mother and father and the toddler learns that parents should be given respect which influences the interaction between parents and children throughout their lifetime. In our society and societies around the world, children are taught from an early age to not only to show respect for parents but to show respect for elders as well. However, their unique eyes caught beauty in the imperfection of the human form instead of washing them over with idealism. There are many surviving statues that show just how realism played an important role for Roman artist. Contrary to the Greeks, during the republic and imperial eras, Rome strived to perfect realism, which one sees with their figural busts and full standing sculptures. It is really nothing more than a pump, composed of muscle which pumps blood throughout the body, beating approximately 72 times per minute of our lives. The heart pumps the blood, which carries all the vital materials which help our bodies function and removes the waste products that we do not need. It is so essential to our survival that any malfunction or congenital or acquired defect can lead to major complications and possibly death. Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a congenital heart disease that affects the membranous part of the interventricular septum. Not knowing what has happened to the man on the ledge, is how we re left feeling at the end of Death and the Maiden, we re left guessing at what has happened to Roberto and the state of mind that Paulina is left in. To figure out what Ariel Dorfman wants us to believe, it is important to look at Theatre of Cruelty and the ghosts of our past. Examined more closely, Paulina seems to be imagining Roberto s presence in the concert hall. Theatre of Cruelty is a theatre practice created by Antonin Artaud. The purpose of this practice is to present real problems and have the audience reflect on how they would act in these given situations. Theatre of Cruelty highlights the lives of those who were tormented as a result of those in power. This leads to audience members walking out and reanalyzing their own lives and actions (Cash). Considering Theatre of Cruelty, Roberto must be imagined because of the final monologue by Paulina and the stage directions that follow. She poses several questions to Roberto, as she reaches the climactic moment of shooting Roberto and asks, And why does it always have to be people like me who have to sacrifice, why are we the ones who have to make concessions ... Success Is Counted Sweetest Only those who have experienced failure can truly appreciate success, is the central theme that Emily Dickinson follows in her poem entitled Success is counted sweetest. This theme is manifested not only through her encouraging tone, but also through several literary devices, such as imagery, metaphors and allusions. Dickinson begins the poem by restating the title, which is followed by an example where nectar symbolizes success. Next, she writes about a solider that hears the winning team celebrating. However, he hears the victorious group as he is lying on the ground dying. From this, some may say that the poem is about how people who have been defeated, appreciate success more than those who simply win. Although, this is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So clear of victory. From the start Dickinson is talking about the soldiers who have died. Then she addresses how the soldiers that lived can not begin to fathom the value of success since they were able to go home. They did not lose their lives as other soldiers did, and the ones who did could only wish to exchange places with the ones who survived. In addition to Dickinson using tone to emphasize her point, she also incorporated various literary devices, similar to imagery, metaphors and allusions. Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, The distant strains of triumph, Burst agonized and clear! This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the sound of victory in the near distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of sorrow within the readers, since they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is demonstrated in the lines two and three when she says, To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest need. In this instance, nectar symbolizes success. Thus, in order for anyone to reap victory, they must overcome an obstacle. Yet, to fully interpret this, one has to analyze the meaning of the metaphor, which makes the readers think deeper and enables the to get a better understanding of message that is being portrayed. Seeking innovation, the British Government offered £20,000 for people to invent a solution (£20,000 in 1714 is around $4.7 million dollars in 2010) (Thomas, 2011). Innovative scientists and sailors came together to formulate information that is more accurate. This is possibly the first ever example of crowdsourcing; thus, solving the problems for many sailors. The contest was considered unsolvable by many. John Harrison, the son of a carpenter, won the Longitude contest. Asbestos manufacturing companies and their lawyer similarly, denied knowledge of the association between asbestos exposure and lung disease, and argued consistently in every lawsuit that this association wasn t known until Selikoff s landmark article that was published in 1964. This possible difference in engagement may be due to opportunity structures that help or hinder the feasibility of engaging. The Inhumanity Of Zoos Masters of Disguise: The Inhumanity of Zoos Every year approximately 175 million people go to aquariums, and zoos to spectate and ponder at the vast number of wildlife from every corner of the world ( Static Brain, n.p.). Little do visitors know that they are witnessing firsthand the imprisonment and inhumane treatment of innocent animals. Wildlife should not be kept captive where they are exposed to overwhelming isolation, a shortened life span, and in the rare occasion when they are released back into the wild deprived of natural instincts to help them survive. Similar to humans, animals are living creatures who require interaction with their own kind; however, when they are kept in captivity these animals are frequently exposed to isolation. Wild animals commonly live in groups, whether it be a pride of lions, pack of wolves or a pod of whales. One particular example pertains to the natural grouping of elephants in the wild versus the complete solitary environment in which they are kept in when captive. That being said, elephants naturally live within large family groups and are one of the most socially complex animals outside of man. Yet in zoos they are kept either alone or with only one or two other unrelated elephants ( Los Angeles Times, n.p.).
