  Our ability to identify and understand our
             emotions and others’
         …and how we control ours

Why should we care?
  – Career?
Importance of work relationships
 – Carnegie Institute of Technology: 85% of
   Leadership Success is due to skills in
   communicating, leading and negotiating,
   attributing 15% to technical knowledge.
                                             (Forbes 2012)
 – I.Q. Does not significantly change over one’s
   lifetime, but E.Q. can based on one’s desire to
   learn and grow
                                   (Psychology Today 2013)
Importance of work relationships
 – EQ of leaders has a direct influence on workplace
   climate; workplace climate influences metrics
   like productivity, employee engagement, and
   overall productivity

    various interests and pursuits.

• What is it? 3 components
   1. Ability to express emotion
   2. Ability to express opinion, even when unpopular
   3. Ability to stand up for personal rights
     …without being aggressive or abusive

• What is it?
  – Thinking without influence of others’ thoughts,
    emotions. Sifting through the input
  – It takes courage…why?
• Why should we care?
  – It’s about relying on your own judgment enough to
    trust it.
  – It’s about not having your confidence tied to
    anything out of your control

#7 Interpersonal Relationships
• What is it?
  – The arena where we put EQ into practice
  – They are mutually satisfying
     (what do I get? what do I give?)…render some control
  – How many is too many?

• Why should we care?
  – We’re not wired to be isolated
  – We must get better at sharing resources

#8 Empathy
• What is it?
  – Understand, be aware of, and be sensitive to the
    feelings/thoughts/experiences of another
  – “reading” people…not reacting to people

• Why should we care?
  – It’s the only way we can give people feedback
  – As our world moves faster, we take less time to pay
    attention to others
  – Dramatically more accurate communication
  – Collaboration

• What is it?
  – Assuming responsibility for well-being of the group


• Why should we care?
  – Competition v Collaboration
  – Value your social engagements (meetings, church)

#10 Problem Solving (really?)
• What is it?
  – We almost never solve hard problems with facts alone
  – Emotions have an effect on decision making
  – We don’t just confront the problem, we confront, accept
    and resolve the emotional challenges that accompany them

• What is it?
   – Knowing what is actually happening
   – Do we “prepare ourselves” for certain situations?


• Why should we care?
   – We only see reality through our own perceptions
   – These questions/tests are critical

• What is it?
  – An urge that compels us to act
  – Can be helpful or harmful

• Why should we care?
  – Many of us are action oriented (Type A)
  – Action-oriented people don’t usually notice their
    WAKE
  – Controlling impulses improves SELF REGARD

#13 Flexibility
• What is it?
   – Adjusting to circumstances w/o compromising core
     values
   – Willing to yield to the influence of others
   – Adaptable, tolerant, thinks on their feet

• Why should we care?
   – Change is everywhere
   – Complainers? “should be” …too stuck to core

#14 Stress Tolerance
• What is it?
   – Not a question of if, rather when & how often
   – Causes fight or flight response, even if none is required



• Why should we care?
   – Analyze situation better and resourcefully deal
   – Can’t manage stress? Cant live well, can’t function optimally

• What is it?
  – Silver lining… but why is it hard sometimes?
  – Reality and the people in it are essentially good
  – Any negative outcome is a temporary setback

  – Physical health, persistence, flexibility, Self regard

• What is it?
  – Satisfaction, having or getting what we desire

• Why should we care?
  – Linked to everything we do and how well we do it
