Editor's Notes

  1. Coatings mixed with solvent is one of the greatest concerns in the shop. The coatings and waste contains VOCs, precursors to ozone and PM formation, two of the most serious air pollutants. Exposure to ozone may result in reduced lung function and respiratory symptoms (coughing, wheezing) (state and natl standards exceeded)
  2. There are opportunities to reduce paint waste in the mixing room and during painting. Throughout the shop, the main way to reduce costs and waste is not to have to do the job over again because of mistakes in the finish. We’ll review ways to minimize paint and solvent waste.
  3. The inventory management is similar to that in many other businesses. Use just-in-time ordering to avoid overstocking and wasting out of spec. materials. The mixing device agitates the paint and so its ready to be used.
  4. Reduce thickness matching mistakes and the need to re-paint. Saves labor, material, and waste. This is mostly used for hard to mix paints and primers. If you routinely start with a small amount of coating and make a mistake with the thickness only a small amount is wasted. Some other things painters can do to improve mixing are: Take advantage of other painters’ knowledge and experience. Become repetitive and attentive when mixing
  5. Many shops have a computerized scale and recordkeeping system that prescribes the amount of paint and additives to mix for specific colors. The system works well to track product use and report to the air district as required.
  6. To troubleshoot – painters and computer record the amounts they are mixing; the shop manager reviews reports to find any problems, such as over-estimating, mixing colors, re-doing job. All of these mistakes or problems will add to the paint + thinner waste stream.
  7. Left-over paint can be used, it does not have to be wasted. Its useful to use to cover colors or under dark colors. But be aware that if color coats are mixed into ground or primer coat, color coats generally have higher VOC than primers –if mixed in it won’t take much to exceed regulatory limit for primer. Mixed paint can also be saved for a limited time and used later, especially for commonly used colors.
  8. Calibrated liners may be used to reduce paint and cleaning solvent waste.
  9. Shown here are paint cups that hold the liners. The disposable liner goes inside this outer reusable cup
  10. The advantages to using paint cup liners is that less paint is wasted by transferring from one container to another; the cup provides better application of the coating and the paint cup does not have to be cleaned. Cost benefits are gained from using less coating material, and generating less cleaning waste. The biggest cost benefit may be increased production from significantly reduced labor to do the same job. The plastic cups are waste.
  11. Schedule jobs to do as many like jobs back-to-back as possible. Mix and spray the same primer or color coatings all at once. When using waterborne primers, allow time to dry unless using special drying equipment
  12. Poor technique wastes paint, necessitates more clean-up, uses more time, labor and energy of painter. Effective training will improve application efficiency and finish quality, which correlates to reduced product use and costs, air emissions (VOCs), waste generation, spray booth maintenance, and labor Painters can get training and use higher efficiency spray guns and targeting device to improve transfer efficiency, reduce paint waste, need to re-work part , i.e. sanding re-painting
  13. Training is available for painters to paint more efficiently. The STAR program developed by Iowa waste reduction center,IWRC is designed to increase TE and part of the training is done using the LaserPaint targeting device. IWRC also has training for defense application. The CARB web page has information on these programs. The web addresses are shown here.
  14. The laserpaint is a tool increase painter’s efficiency. It was developed by the IWRC with the STAR training to improve technique.
  15. Here is what the tool looks like. It attaches to the spray gun, and will fit most guns. Currently it is used in military for defense equipment and industrial applications. Increases TE by 11% in automotive shop use.
  16. The verification was done with the original name LaserTouch. The licensing changed, now laser touch is sold for home use only. Application efficiency can be improved with high TE spray guns. Painters and shop owners can check the EPA verification reports when considering spray gun purchases.
  17. Painting inside a permitted spray booth is required in some air districts. The spray booth provides a safe clean atmosphere for refinishing. And captures paint particulate so it is not emitted to the air.
  18. Down-draft is the more efficient type. The air down-draft flow helps keep contaminants off the refinishing surface and draws paint out of worker zone better

  21. Depending on outside temperature may need heat during paint application. Many shops are using these higher end spray booths to increase production.
  22. These are items to look at when evaluating for purchase. We will talk a little bit about the paint booth equipment needed for drying waterborne paint later.
  23. Air comes in from top through filters and flows out through the floor
  24. View of intake filters
  25. Overloaded paint filters can impede air flow and result in poor quality refinishing. If the filters are loaded, the fans may get paint solids built up. Keep the inside of spray booth very clean to get better results

  27. Shops have incentive to reduce paint waste, it correlates directly to cost savings for product and disposal. It usually helps to involve employees, to ask for their input and also offer incentives to reduce materials waste.
