Introduction
What is Electric Vehicle ?
An electric vehicle (EV) is one that operates on an
electric motor, instead of an internal-combustion engine
that generates power by burning a mix of fuel and
gases. Electric vehicles now include cars, transit buses,
trucks of all sizes, and even big-rig tractor trailers that
are at least partially powered by electricity.
 Cost Effective
 Reduce Harmful Gases
 Cheaper to maintain
 Reduced Noise Pollution
 Energy Independent
Why Electric Vehicle ?
Basic of Automobile
A self propelled vehicle used for transportation of
goods & passengers on the ground is called an
Automobile.
A vehicle producing power within itself for its
propulsion is known as a Self propelled vehicle.
Eg. Moped, Scooter, motorcycle, Car, jeep, truck,
tractor, ships, aircrafts, rocket etc.

Engine : It is a Source of power.
Frame & Chassis : It supports the Engine, wheel, body,
braking system, steering, etc.
Transmission : It transmit power from engine to wheel. It
consists of clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft, axle,
differential.
Vehicle body : It is the main supporting structure of a
vehicle, to which all other components are attached.
(BIW)
Accessories : consists of Light, AC, wiper, stereo, etc.

Components of
Electric Vehicle
1. Traction Battery Pack
Traction battery pack is also known as
Electric vehicle battery (EVB) . It powers
the electric motors of an electric vehicle.
The battery acts as an electrical storage
system. It stores energy in the form DC
current.
2. DC-DC Converter
The traction battery pack delivers a
constant voltage. But different components
of the vehicle has different requirements.
The DC-DC convertor distributes the
output power that is coming from the
battery to a required level. It also provides
the voltage required to charge the auxiliary
battery.

3. Electric motor
Electric traction motor is the main
component of an electric vehicle. The
motor converts the electrical energy into
kinetic energy. This energy rotates the
wheels. Electric motor is the main
component that differentiates an electric
car from conventional cars
4. Onboard charger
Onboard charger is used to convert the
AC supply received from the charge port to
DC supply. The on-board charger is located
and installed inside the car. It monitors
various battery characteristics and controls
the current flowing inside the battery pack.

5. Controller
Power electronics controller determines
the working of an electric car. It performs
the regulation of electrical energy from the
batteries to the electric motors. The pedal
set by the driver determines the speed of
the car and frequency of variation of
voltage that is input to the motor. It also
controls the torque produced.
6. Power Inverter
It coverts DC power from the batteries to AC power. It also
converts the AC current generated during regenerative braking
into DC current. This is further used to recharge the batteries.

Electric Vehicle
BEVs are also known as All-Electric Vehicles (AEV).
Electric Vehicles using BEV technology run entirely on a
battery-powered electric drivetrain. The electricity used to
drive the vehicle is stored in a large battery pack which can
be charged by plugging into the electricity grid. The charged
battery pack then provides power to one or more electric
motors to run the electric car.

Plug-In-Hybrid
Electric Vehicle
The PHEVs are also known as series hybrids. They have
both engine and a motor. You can choose among the fuels,
conventional fuel (such as petrol) or alternative fuel (such
as bio-diesel). It can also be powered by a rechargeable
battery pack. The battery can be charged externally.
Example: BMW i8, Hyundai SONATA

A hybrid vehicle is simply one that relies on two different
power sources for motion. The two different power sources are
typically petrol and electricity. This vehicles have both an ICE &
Electric motor. The battery however only charge by ICE with the
help of generator.

Series Hybrid EV
A series hybrid is like a battery electric vehicle (BEV) in
design. Here, the combustion engine drives an electric generator
instead of directly driving the wheels. The generator both charges a
battery and powers an electric motor that moves the vehicle. When
large amounts of power are required, the motor draws electricity
from both the battery and the generator.
Example: Cadillac ELR, Chevrolet Volt, and Fisker Karma.

Parallel Hybrid EV
A parallel hybrid is propelled by both an internal
combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor connected to a
mechanical transmission. Power distribution between the engine
and the motor is varied so both run in their optimum operating
region as much as possible. There is no separate generator in a
parallel hybrid. Whenever the generator's operation is needed,
the motor functions as generator. The electric motor turns on
only when a boost is needed.

A series-parallel is a flexible system wherein the IC
engine, and electric motor can work in conjunction or
independently. The power delivery or the power distribution
helps the vehicle achieve maximum efficiency in terms of
power output or fuel-efficiency.
Example : Toyota Prius
Fuel cell EV
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), also known as
fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) or Zero Emission Vehicle, are
types of electric cars that employ fuel cell technology to
generate the electricity required to run the vehicle. In this
type of vehicles, the chemical energy of the fuel is converted
directly into electric energy.

 They Are Also Researches Being Done On Fuel Cell.
 Creating Building Codes, That Makes It Easier To Construct
New Charging Stations.

  • 3. Introduction What is Electric Vehicle ? An electric vehicle (EV) is one that operates on an electric motor, instead of an internal-combustion engine that generates power by burning a mix of fuel and gases. Electric vehicles now include cars, transit buses, trucks of all sizes, and even big-rig tractor trailers that are at least partially powered by electricity.

  • 5. Basic of Automobile A self propelled vehicle used for transportation of goods & passengers on the ground is called an Automobile. A vehicle producing power within itself for its propulsion is known as a Self propelled vehicle. Eg. Moped, Scooter, motorcycle, Car, jeep, truck, tractor, ships, aircrafts, rocket etc.
  • 7. Main Component of Automobile Engine : It is a Source of power. Frame & Chassis : It supports the Engine, wheel, body, braking system, steering, etc. Transmission : It transmit power from engine to wheel. It consists of clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft, axle, differential. Vehicle body : It is the main supporting structure of a vehicle, to which all other components are attached. (BIW) Accessories : consists of Light, AC, wiper, stereo, etc.

  • 9. Components of Electric Vehicle 1. Traction Battery Pack Traction battery pack is also known as Electric vehicle battery (EVB) . It powers the electric motors of an electric vehicle. The battery acts as an electrical storage system. It stores energy in the form DC current. 2. DC-DC Converter The traction battery pack delivers a constant voltage. But different components of the vehicle has different requirements. The DC-DC convertor distributes the output power that is coming from the battery to a required level. It also provides the voltage required to charge the auxiliary battery.
  • 10. Components of Electric Vehicle 3. Electric motor Electric traction motor is the main component of an electric vehicle. The motor converts the electrical energy into kinetic energy. This energy rotates the wheels. Electric motor is the main component that differentiates an electric car from conventional cars 4. Onboard charger Onboard charger is used to convert the AC supply received from the charge port to DC supply. The on-board charger is located and installed inside the car. It monitors various battery characteristics and controls the current flowing inside the battery pack.
  • 11. Components of Electric Vehicle 5. Controller Power electronics controller determines the working of an electric car. It performs the regulation of electrical energy from the batteries to the electric motors. The pedal set by the driver determines the speed of the car and frequency of variation of voltage that is input to the motor. It also controls the torque produced. 6. Power Inverter It coverts DC power from the batteries to AC power. It also converts the AC current generated during regenerative braking into DC current. This is further used to recharge the batteries.

  • 14. Battery Electric Vehicle BEVs are also known as All-Electric Vehicles (AEV). Electric Vehicles using BEV technology run entirely on a battery-powered electric drivetrain. The electricity used to drive the vehicle is stored in a large battery pack which can be charged by plugging into the electricity grid. The charged battery pack then provides power to one or more electric motors to run the electric car. Example: Tata NEXON, Tata TIGOR
  • 15. Plug-In-Hybrid Electric Vehicle The PHEVs are also known as series hybrids. They have both engine and a motor. You can choose among the fuels, conventional fuel (such as petrol) or alternative fuel (such as bio-diesel). It can also be powered by a rechargeable battery pack. The battery can be charged externally. Example: BMW i8, Hyundai SONATA
  • 16. Hybrid Electric Vehicle A hybrid vehicle is simply one that relies on two different power sources for motion. The two different power sources are typically petrol and electricity. This vehicles have both an ICE & Electric motor. The battery however only charge by ICE with the help of generator. What is Hybrid Vehicle ?   • 17. Series Hybrid EV A series hybrid is like a battery electric vehicle (BEV) in design. Here, the combustion engine drives an electric generator instead of directly driving the wheels. The generator both charges a battery and powers an electric motor that moves the vehicle. When large amounts of power are required, the motor draws electricity from both the battery and the generator. Example: Cadillac ELR, Chevrolet Volt, and Fisker Karma. Fig. Series HEV
  • 18. Parallel Hybrid EV A parallel hybrid is propelled by both an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor connected to a mechanical transmission. Power distribution between the engine and the motor is varied so both run in their optimum operating region as much as possible. There is no separate generator in a parallel hybrid. Whenever the generator's operation is needed, the motor functions as generator. The electric motor turns on only when a boost is needed. Example : Honda CIVIC Hybrid
  • 19. Series-Parallel Hybrid EV A series-parallel is a flexible system wherein the IC engine, and electric motor can work in conjunction or independently. The power delivery or the power distribution helps the vehicle achieve maximum efficiency in terms of power output or fuel-efficiency. Example : Toyota Prius
  • 20. Fuel cell EV Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), also known as fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) or Zero Emission Vehicle, are types of electric cars that employ fuel cell technology to generate the electricity required to run the vehicle. In this type of vehicles, the chemical energy of the fuel is converted directly into electric energy. Example : Toyota MIRAI

Future Scope of EV  About 5 Million Ev-Cars Will Be On The Road By 2025.  Creating Incentive To Promote Zero Emission Vehicles.  Currently Working To Create More Efficient And Lighter Batteries.  They Are Also Researches Being Done On Fuel Cell.  Creating Building Codes, That Makes It Easier To Construct New Charging Stations.
