The course, designed as a beginner’s guide to cancer genetics is open to anyone interested in understanding cancer without having studied biology at school or university. The course was adapted from a second year, campus-based undergraduate course that Momna Hejmadi teaches on, so it offered a perfect opportunity for students to gain real-life perspectives from the public. It also extended the learning space to a global community of learners from school pupils, health professionals to cancer-survivors.

However, disadvantages are that it can eliminate developing physical skills, cause frustration if equipment fails, and replace teachers if self-learning is done inefficiently. Overall, technology is preferred to improve education when used appropriately.

This talk will introduce the challenges and opportunities many young autistic students encounter during their higher education journey. Details and findings will be presented from two EU-funded research projects: Autism&Uni which focused on the transition into university, and IMAGE which is currently ongoing and focuses on the transition out of university, into the workplace. Both projects have a strong digital angle with the design of online toolkits specifically aimed at autistic students.
Through a participatory design approach, students were directly involved in conception and production of these digital tools. Leeds- Beckett University have learnt a lot about the skills and preferences autistic students have, and how technology can help them fulfil their aspirations. Along the way pre-conceptions were thoroughly challenged.
Both projects champion two important principles: Firstly, a strength-based view of autism that focuses on skills and abilities rather than deficits. And secondly a universal design approach to learning that provides choices, depending on an individual's preferences and abilities. This puts the onus on universities to consider how established practices and technologies must change to fully support autistic students in an inclusive way - and any other group of students.
Digital learning
This document outlines 10 key things that teachers and educational leaders should know about students and digital learning based on an annual survey of K-12 students, parents, teachers and administrators. It finds that students are adept users of technology both in and out of school, using devices and social media for learning in various ways. Abstract:
Data and analytics are transforming how organisations work in all sectors. While there are clearly ethical issues around big data and privacy, there may also be an argument that educational institutions have a moral obligation to use all the information they have to maximize the learner's progress. So, assuming education can't (arguably shouldn't) resist this revolution, the question is how to harness this new capability intelligently. Learning Analytics is an exploding research field and startup market: do leaders know what to ask when the vendors roll up with dazzling dashboards? In this talk I'll provide an overview of developments, and consider some of the key questions we should be asking. Like any modelling technology and accounting system, analytics are not neutral, and do not passively describe sociotechnical reality: they begin to shape it. Moreover, they start with the things that are easiest to count, which doesn't necessarily equate to the things we value in learning. Given the crisis in education at many levels, what realities do we want analytics to perpetuate, or bring into being?
Bio:
Simon Buckingham Shum is Professor of Learning Informatics at the UK Open University's Knowledge Media Institute. He researches, teaches and consults on Learning Analytics, Collective Intelligence and Argument Visualization. His background is B.Sc. Psychology, M.Sc. Ergonomics and Ph.D. Human-Computer Interaction. He co-edited Visualizing Argumentation (Springer 2003), the standard reference in the field, followed by Knowledge Cartography (2008). In the field of Learning Analytics, he served as Program Co-Chair of the 2nd International Learning Analytics LAK12 conference, chaired the LAK13 Discourse-Centric Learning Analytics workshop, and the LASI13 Dispositional Learning Analytics workshop. He is a co-founder of the Society for Learning Analytics Research, Compendium Institute, LearningEmergence.net, and was Co-Founder and General Editor of the Journal of Interactive Media in Education. The future focus principle cited above has been a feature of our NZ Curriculum Framework since it was published in 2006. Since then we’ve seen all sorts of activities and programmes introduced in schools under the banner of ‘future focus’ – including things such as TechFutures Week, Futures Problem Solving, Enviro-schools, Robo-challenges, Young Enterprise Schemes and Youth Parliament to name just a few. Despite this, however, in a comparison of the individual principals evident in school’s curricula reported on by ERO in 2011, Future Focus was the least evident.
The history of our current education system is premised on the notion that we are preparing young people for their future. When schools were first established that meant preparing students with the literacy and numeracy skills they would require in the factories and other industrial settings they would leave school to work in. Two hundred years later the jobs may have changed, but the drivers remain much the same.
But what if the future our tamariki will face is less certain? What about the global issues and concerns that threaten to disrupt the way we have known life on this planet for the past few centuries? What are the areas of knowledge, skills and dispositions they will need in order to face these challenges, to cope with this uncertainty, and to thrive in the world of the future?
In a world where we’re focused on short-term solutions and seeking immediate gratification for our efforts, can ‘thinking long’ provide an alternative way of viewing what we do and how we go about it? Is ‘thinking long’ the key to future focused learning in our schools?
In this Leaders Connect we will explore what it means to be Future Focused in our approach to our work as educators, and in the design of programmes for our students.

The future focus principle cited above has been a feature of our NZ Curriculum Framework since it was published in 2006. Since then we’ve seen all sorts of activities and programmes introduced in schools under the banner of ‘future focus’ – including things such as TechFutures Week, Futures Problem Solving, Enviro-schools, Robo-challenges, Young Enterprise Schemes and Youth Parliament to name just a few. Despite this, however, in a comparison of the individual principals evident in school’s curricula reported on by ERO in 2011, Future Focus was the least evident.
The history of our current education system is premised on the notion that we are preparing young people for their future. When schools were first established that meant preparing students with the literacy and numeracy skills they would require in the factories and other industrial settings they would leave school to work in. Two hundred years later the jobs may have changed, but the drivers remain much the same.
But what if the future our tamariki will face is less certain? What about the global issues and concerns that threaten to disrupt the way we have known life on this planet for the past few centuries? What are the areas of knowledge, skills and dispositions they will need in order to face these challenges, to cope with this uncertainty, and to thrive in the world of the future?
In a world where we’re focused on short-term solutions and seeking immediate gratification for our efforts, can ‘thinking long’ provide an alternative way of viewing what we do and how we go about it? Is ‘thinking long’ the key to future focused learning in our schools?
In this Leaders Connect we will explore what it means to be Future Focused in our approach to our work as educators, and in the design of programmes for our students.
