Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. WHATARE 21STCENTURYSKILLS?
Everybody seems to be talking about learning 21st century skills, but what does it all
mean for the classroom teacher who needs better technology in education and more
resources for tomorrow's mathematics or history lesson?
Concerned about preparing today's children for tomorrow's world, the Partnership for
21st Century Skills and International Society for Technology in Education have drafted
frameworks and guidelines that outline what our students need to know to meet the
challenges of the modern age. Mastery of core content areas, such as language Arts
(including English language arts, reading, Spanish, etc....), mathematics, science and
history, remains the centerpiece. But these two organizations emphasize the
importance of cultivating interdisciplinary themes, such as global awareness and
financial, civic and health literacy's, and weaving key skill areas (creativity and
innovation, communication and collaboration, research and information fluency, and
critical thinking, problem solving and decision making) into core subject matter.

Technology in the field of education can be a
powerful tool. The Importance Of Technology
In Education Info graphic presents 5 benefits
of technology in education:
Future Oriented: The future is all about
technology and multi-screening. Education can’t
lag behind.
Learning Becomes Interesting: It engages and
challenges students with brand new and
interactive methods.
Improves Skills: digital learning,
communication, collaboration, building teams,
mobile learning, listening, planning, valuing
diversity, problem solving, self direction, global
awareness, social, presentations.
Increases Collaboration: Students can work
and collaborate with people in other
locations. Distance learners can join online
communities.
Reduces Weight: Instead of carrying lots of
books, students just carry a laptop, a tablet or a
mouse which contain all their books and projects.
4. TECHNOLOGY is a big help for the students,
especially in researching their assignments.
TECHNOLOGY makes the students life easier.
TECHNOLOGY is useful to the students to
engage new ideas and explore new things.
TECHNOLOGY is a big part of the students in
their daily life.
5. TECHNOLOGY is important to the students in developing their critical
thinking.
TECHNOLOGY allows the students to be more creative in doing
document files.
TECHNOLOGY helps the students developing new skills and grasping an
understanding of how things work.
TECHNOLOGY can provide students with a wealth of information and
knowledge.
6. The use of technology in schools
Technology is an increasingly important aspect of modern school life
and has dramatically changed the way teachers and students go about
their daily activities.
“Computer technology”
For children
For children, computer technology has provided an indescribable wealth
of resources, information and knowledge; since the introduction of the
internet, students are now able to access information on whatever
subject they want, wherever they want. Resources include journals,
articles, e-books, practice tests and examinations, model answers and
research findings. Research has also suggested that computer
technology has helped students to improve their grades in other
subjects, most notably science. Practically, students can work much
faster using a computer which enables them to do more study in the
same period of time.
7. For staff
Computer technology has enabled teachers to make their lessons more
interactive and therefore more interesting and rewarding; this method has also
been shown to improve pupil performance as lessons are more memorable and
therefore students are able to retain information more effectively. Teachers, like
students, can also find a whole host of resources on the internet which can
provide inspiration and advice for classes; teachers are also able to recommend
good resources to student to further encourage and stimulate their learning.
“Practical improvements”
Computer technology has enabled systems of obtaining and
recording information much more efficient and effective; computer records
are much harder to misplace than realms of paper records. Additional
changes such as submission of work via email and responding to enquiries
online save time and energy.
8. Media technology
In addition to computers, many schools and colleges are using new methods of technology to
enhance the learning experience; these include digital television channels, DVDs, digital
radio and sophisticated forms of communication technology. Digital radio and television
allow students to access a wealth of different channels which cover a vast range of
different subjects including languages, science, history and geography to name just a few.
Children are used to new technology as they have grown up with it; it is therefore
undoubtedly beneficial that they have the option to use it to increase their learning
capacity and pursue their interests. Educational programmers and podcasts are now
widely available to download to your computer or MP3 player; this makes education more
modern and multi-faceted.
Scientific technology
Science and technology are closely linked and often become intertwined. In schools, new
technology can help students to understand science and make ideas that were previously
banished to the pages of books, a visible or tangible reality. Technology undoubtedly makes
the learning process more interactive and therefore more interesting and memorable.
Research has also shown a positive correlation between computer technology and better
results in scientific subjects. Technology in constantly evolving which means that we are
able to understand more; this is also true in schools where students are able to access the
newest technology to explore new concepts and ideas.

10. How important is technology in education?
The world is changing, and sometimes it probably seems you're in a race to catch
up. The latest technology probably takes a chunk out of your yearly budget, and then
you have to reeducate yourself about how to do things in new and different ways -- like
how to turn the flat screen on and off or set the programmable timer on your HVAC
system. Sure, technology is neat. It can make it easy to video conference with your
associates in Tokyo or read the headlines on your tablet while Web surfing at your
favorite java joint. You can bank, shop, research your medical symptoms and get free
legal advice all online. You can use technology to plot your driving route to Disney
World, complete with turn-by-turn verbal instructions. If driving is too much of a
hassle, you can investigate the best airline deals and accommodations with a click of
your trusty mouse. And these are just a few of the more straightforward things
technology can do to make your life easier. You may be concerned about the collateral
damage caused by technology, like loss of privacy, but like a rushing tide, technological
advancements are always coming -- and they're coming fast. From the development of
genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to nanotechnology that may make it possible to
cure a disease using microscopic machines that operate like mini-medics inside the
human body, technology impacts so many areas of modern life that it's impossible to
ignore. Using it as a teaching tool and also making it a topic of study in schools is an
important feature of a comprehensive, broad-based education. Like reading, writing
and math, technology is fundamental.

11. Advantages and disadvantages of technology in the 21st century
Modern technology has the greatest impact towards our daily lives in
this generation. living in a single-click-base society is such a wellness living
that will leads to easy access to information and communication pursuance.
Technology helps to interacts distinct boundaries and connect it as the
technology was made for. It riches no exemption as the existence of its
connection is present for communication purposes. It innovates the way of
living of every people through changes of the convinced of each technological
aspects, it gives every human the right for indulgence and pleasure,
a sumptuous living that takes a effort for satisfaction. Hence unfavorable
situation takes place at the most precious lure of the humanity.
12. As a part of growing improvement, lost of man power is the
most mischievous alter or effect of the modern innovations
since machinery and robotics has the greatest accuracy and program
precision, it replaces each mans job for it takes only to program them
and operate unlike for mistake-prone man power. It is also use for system
hacking that ruins the aspect of security and privacy protection.
Radiation related has exist due to over exposure to machines and
gadgets. It is a tied-up process to balance each principles of advantages
and disadvantages of technology, but in the proper usage of it, we are
able to be a part the innovation that will surely leads to national and
human kind progress.

13. To end up this topic of having an
importance of technology in
education. I must say that
technology has a big role in
students learning to improve their
potential in making their own
documentation files and It helps
their research works in easier and
faster ways by not abusively using
it.
