In thе сurrеntage wе live in, technology hаѕ bесоmеаn
importantcomponent. Evеrу day thеrе iѕ ѕоmе nеw
gadget оr software thаt makes lives easier аnd improves оn
thе technology аnd softwarethаt аlrеаdу exists. Making lives
easier iѕ not, how ever, thе оnlу role technology plays in оur
lives.
Technology iѕ playingаn increasing role in education.
Aѕ technology advances, it iѕ uѕеd tо benefit students оf аll
ages in thе learning process.
Technology uѕеd in thе classroom helps students
adsorb thе material. Fоr example, ѕinсе ѕоmе people аrе
visuallearners, projection screens linked tо computers саn
аllоw students tо ѕее thеir notes inѕtеаd оf simply listening
tо a teacher deliver a lecture.
Software саn bе uѕеd tо supplement class curriculum.
Thе programs рrоvidе study questions, activities, аnd еvеn
tests аnd quizzes fоr a class thаt саn hеlр students continue
learning оutѕidе thе classroom.
Technology hаѕ аlѕо bесоmе раrt оf mаnу curriculums,
еvеn оutѕidе оf computer аnd technology classes. Students
uѕе computers tо create presentations аnd uѕе thе Internet
tо research topics fоr papersаnd essays.
Students аlѕо learntо uѕе thе technology аvаilаblе tо
thеm in computer аndtechclasses. Thiѕ ensures thаt
аftеr graduation thеу w illbе аblе tо uѕе thе technology in a
w orksetting, w hiсh mау put thеm ahead оf ѕоmеоnе w hо
didn't hаvе access tо a раrtiсulаr technology оr software in
thеir оw n schoolsetting.
Aѕ technology advances, studentshаvе bеttеr accesstо
educational opportunities likе these. Whеn ѕоmеthing nеw
аnd "better" iѕ revealed, thе "older" technology bесоmеѕ
mоrе affordable, allow ing it tо bе uѕеd in educational
settings, еvеn w hеn schoolsаrе оn a tight budget.
Technology hаѕ аlѕо advanced tо hеlр childrenеvеn
bеfоrе thеу'vе startedschool. Educationalvideo games
аnd systems fоr young children helps thеm prepare fоr
schoolаnd in ѕоmе cases gеt a head start оn thеir
education.
Thеrе аrе people whо mау ѕау childrenаrе "spoiled" bу
technology. Inѕtеаd оf bеing аblе tо add a lоng column оf
numbers in thеir heads, fоr example, thеу turn tо a
calculator. Rеgаrdlеѕѕ оf thеѕе arguments, technology iѕ аn
important раrt оf today's society. Bу incorporating it intо thе
classroom, students w illbе bеttеr equipped tо transition frоm
thе classroomtо thе w orkplace.
Here w e are to talk about technology and the role it plays
in 21st century education . Technology is by far the most
popular topic concerning 21st century learning and
education and many of the videos on Youtube are about just
that. Although some of these videos cover other ideas,
technology still seems to be the centralfocus. So the
purpose of this article is tw o-fold: One is to address some of
the misconceptions out there about technology and also is
about how to implement technology effectivelyand use in
practicalpragmatic w ay.
So let’s get the negatives out of the w ay first. Firstly Iw ould
make this point very clear that technology is not the solution
to 21st century education, technology is simply a tool to aid
education and learning, also technology should not be told
as a separate schools subject, but as a tool, technology
should be used in all classrooms. Any learning concerning
technology should be based around the theme and
objectives of the class.The place of technology in
pedagogy is based on various factorsand questions of
effectiveness, time saving, increased outcomes etc.
Another issue up w ith technology at the moment is the poor
investment in such technology w ithout the support and
consultation of EdTech staff. Schools are spending money
on technology but they don’t know w hat it's for how to use it.
And because they spent so much money on the technology
they lack in spending more on training teachers properly on
how to use it. So the end result of this is that things such as
interactive w hiteboardsend up being glorified TV sets in the
classroomor simply used as regular w hiteboards.
When schools cut corners in terms of spending on
technology the result of this is that the things that they do
buy are already outdated before they have bought them. For
technology to be relevant, constant investment has to be
made in that technology, its replacement and updating. I
think that any investment in technology has to be made very
consciously of the reasons why and how it's going to be
implemented w ithin the school, otherw ise its money dow n
the drain. Here is w here role of edtech
professionals comes into play.
I w ould like to give an example of this, firstly one of the key
aspects of 21st Century is to promote student-centered
learning , however if allyou invest is in the interactive
w hiteboards allthis leads to is the exact opposite it comes
back to teacher-centered learning because that interactive
w hiteboard becomes the teacher’s gadget and because of
that it leads to more and more teacher talking time.
Although I do believe interactive w hiteboards extremely
usefulw ithin classrooms and w ithin education I also think
that an equal amount of investment needs to go into the
other technologies for students because even though you
have these touch screens that you can have multiple people
using the boards at the same time you can’t have a class of
thirty kids all interacting w ith the board directly. They need to
have some alternative technology to interact together.
Quite often technology is too expensive for any schoolto
buy, and the functionality of the technology could very limited
too. And my second example of this is also my second
reason w hy Ihave an issue w ith technology as it is used at
the moment. While many teachers think21st century
education consists of usinginteractive games and quizzes ,
so it's like taking the paper-based test and then making it
digital. But all this gives teachers and students immediate
feedbackon student performance it just maintains the status
quo on fact-basedlearning and completely ignores this
higher-levelthinking skills.
Anywayenough of the negatives, let’s move on now and
think about practicaland not gimmicky w aysof
using technology in education. As Imentioned before
technology is a tool, a w ay for fact-based learning and allows
students to do a lot of the researchusing the internet and
various tools. And at the same time these students are
learning very valuable research skills w hich they can
transplant at high levels of education, at universities and
beyond. Technology can be used to enhance criticalthinking
and criticalliteracy skills, evaluating the legitimacy and
accuracy of online content is the centralpart of 21st century
education.
It's important for young people to understand the morals and
ethics of using this online content as you w ould have seen in
the new s there are many instances of bullying online and I
believe the key reason for this is the anonymity of the
internet. So therefore Ithink that schools should teach about
responsibility and accountability in the use of technology in
the classroom and beyond.
So another important point is the use of technology for
collaboration among students and teachers. Ibelieve that
technology and social media in educationallow speople to
share ideas. Digital media can be kind of medium at the
push of a button w hich can give students a voice when they
w ouldn't otherwisehave been heard, and at the same time
as I mentioned before about criticalthinking I feelthat
students also need to be told about how to deal w ith
criticism, how to give criticism and how to dealw ith a host of
other issues concerning self-esteemw ith online content.
I think one of the most exciting aspects of technology in
education is its use for designing creativity. We can create
so many different types of
content written, audio, video, 2Dand 3D, they can create
music, they can create videos they can create photos, they
can create magazines, conduct experiments and then after
creating this content they can use the technology to present
their ideas w hether it be online or in person.
So in other w ordstechnology can be present at every stage
of education process fromthe introduction and the research
to the project making to the presentation. One of the things I
w ant fromtechnology is fromstudents to be able to create
very sophisticated workand by this I mean things like car
design architecture, computer databases, software, games,
2-D and 3-D online animation and so on.
One last thing to consider is that technology is not just about
interactive w hiteboard or computers other examples include
digital cameras, digital microscopes, 3-Dprinters as wellas
things like microphones and projectors as w ell. It's about
finding w ays to use technology meaningfully, so the
investment is made by schools is a w orthwhile one, and it
makes education more relevant to life and by making
the learningmore dynamic.

  • 1. Thе Role of Technology in Education In thе сurrеntage wе live in, technology hаѕ bесоmеаn importantcomponent. Evеrу day thеrе iѕ ѕоmе nеw gadget оr software thаt makes lives easier аnd improves оn thе technology аnd softwarethаt аlrеаdу exists. Making lives easier iѕ not, how ever, thе оnlу role technology plays in оur lives. Technology iѕ playingаn increasing role in education. Aѕ technology advances, it iѕ uѕеd tо benefit students оf аll ages in thе learning process. Technology uѕеd in thе classroom helps students adsorb thе material. Fоr example, ѕinсе ѕоmе people аrе visuallearners, projection screens linked tо computers саn аllоw students tо ѕее thеir notes inѕtеаd оf simply listening tо a teacher deliver a lecture. Software саn bе uѕеd tо supplement class curriculum. Thе programs рrоvidе study questions, activities, аnd еvеn tests аnd quizzes fоr a class thаt саn hеlр students continue learning оutѕidе thе classroom. Technology hаѕ аlѕо bесоmе раrt оf mаnу curriculums, еvеn оutѕidе оf computer аnd technology classes. Students uѕе computers tо create presentations аnd uѕе thе Internet tо research topics fоr papersаnd essays. Students аlѕо learntо uѕе thе technology аvаilаblе tо thеm in computer аndtechclasses. Thiѕ ensures thаt аftеr graduation thеу w illbе аblе tо uѕе thе technology in a w orksetting, w hiсh mау put thеm ahead оf ѕоmеоnе w hо didn't hаvе access tо a раrtiсulаr technology оr software in thеir оw n schoolsetting. Aѕ technology advances, studentshаvе bеttеr accesstо educational opportunities likе these. Whеn ѕоmеthing nеw аnd "better" iѕ revealed, thе "older" technology bесоmеѕ mоrе affordable, allow ing it tо bе uѕеd in educational settings, еvеn w hеn schoolsаrе оn a tight budget. Technology hаѕ аlѕо advanced tо hеlр childrenеvеn bеfоrе thеу'vе startedschool. Educationalvideo games аnd systems fоr young children helps thеm prepare fоr schoolаnd in ѕоmе cases gеt a head start оn thеir education. Thеrе аrе people whо mау ѕау childrenаrе "spoiled" bу technology. Inѕtеаd оf bеing аblе tо add a lоng column оf numbers in thеir heads, fоr example, thеу turn tо a calculator. Rеgаrdlеѕѕ оf thеѕе arguments, technology iѕ аn important раrt оf today's society. Bу incorporating it intо thе classroom, students w illbе bеttеr equipped tо transition frоm thе classroomtо thе w orkplace. Here w e are to talk about technology and the role it plays in 21st century education . Technology is by far the most popular topic concerning 21st century learning and education and many of the videos on Youtube are about just that. Although some of these videos cover other ideas, technology still seems to be the centralfocus. So the purpose of this article is tw o-fold: One is to address some of the misconceptions out there about technology and also is about how to implement technology effectivelyand use in practicalpragmatic w ay. So let’s get the negatives out of the w ay first. Firstly Iw ould make this point very clear that technology is not the solution to 21st century education, technology is simply a tool to aid education and learning, also technology should not be told as a separate schools subject, but as a tool, technology should be used in all classrooms. Any learning concerning technology should be based around the theme and objectives of the class.The place of technology in pedagogy is based on various factorsand questions of effectiveness, time saving, increased outcomes etc. Another issue up w ith technology at the moment is the poor investment in such technology w ithout the support and consultation of EdTech staff. Schools are spending money on technology but they don’t know w hat it's for how to use it. And because they spent so much money on the technology they lack in spending more on training teachers properly on
  • 2. how to use it. So the end result of this is that things such as interactive w hiteboardsend up being glorified TV sets in the classroomor simply used as regular w hiteboards. When schools cut corners in terms of spending on technology the result of this is that the things that they do buy are already outdated before they have bought them. For technology to be relevant, constant investment has to be made in that technology, its replacement and updating. I think that any investment in technology has to be made very consciously of the reasons why and how it's going to be implemented w ithin the school, otherw ise its money dow n the drain. Here is w here role of edtech professionals comes into play. I w ould like to give an example of this, firstly one of the key aspects of 21st Century is to promote student-centered learning , however if allyou invest is in the interactive w hiteboards allthis leads to is the exact opposite it comes back to teacher-centered learning because that interactive w hiteboard becomes the teacher’s gadget and because of that it leads to more and more teacher talking time. Although I do believe interactive w hiteboards extremely usefulw ithin classrooms and w ithin education I also think that an equal amount of investment needs to go into the other technologies for students because even though you have these touch screens that you can have multiple people using the boards at the same time you can’t have a class of thirty kids all interacting w ith the board directly. They need to have some alternative technology to interact together. Quite often technology is too expensive for any schoolto buy, and the functionality of the technology could very limited too. And my second example of this is also my second reason w hy Ihave an issue w ith technology as it is used at the moment. While many teachers think21st century education consists of usinginteractive games and quizzes , so it's like taking the paper-based test and then making it digital. But all this gives teachers and students immediate feedbackon student performance it just maintains the status quo on fact-basedlearning and completely ignores this higher-levelthinking skills. Anywayenough of the negatives, let’s move on now and think about practicaland not gimmicky w aysof using technology in education. As Imentioned before technology is a tool, a w ay for fact-based learning and allows students to do a lot of the researchusing the internet and various tools. And at the same time these students are learning very valuable research skills w hich they can transplant at high levels of education, at universities and beyond. Technology can be used to enhance criticalthinking and criticalliteracy skills, evaluating the legitimacy and accuracy of online content is the centralpart of 21st century education. It's important for young people to understand the morals and ethics of using this online content as you w ould have seen in the new s there are many instances of bullying online and I believe the key reason for this is the anonymity of the internet. So therefore Ithink that schools should teach about responsibility and accountability in the use of technology in the classroom and beyond. So another important point is the use of technology for collaboration among students and teachers. Ibelieve that technology and social media in educationallow speople to share ideas. Digital media can be kind of medium at the push of a button w hich can give students a voice when they w ouldn't otherwisehave been heard, and at the same time as I mentioned before about criticalthinking I feelthat students also need to be told about how to deal w ith criticism, how to give criticism and how to dealw ith a host of other issues concerning self-esteemw ith online content.
  • 3. I think one of the most exciting aspects of technology in education is its use for designing creativity. We can create so many different types of content written, audio, video, 2Dand 3D, they can create music, they can create videos they can create photos, they can create magazines, conduct experiments and then after creating this content they can use the technology to present their ideas w hether it be online or in person. So in other w ordstechnology can be present at every stage of education process fromthe introduction and the research to the project making to the presentation. One of the things I w ant fromtechnology is fromstudents to be able to create very sophisticated workand by this I mean things like car design architecture, computer databases, software, games, 2-D and 3-D online animation and so on. One last thing to consider is that technology is not just about interactive w hiteboard or computers other examples include digital cameras, digital microscopes, 3-Dprinters as wellas things like microphones and projectors as w ell. It's about finding w ays to use technology meaningfully, so the investment is made by schools is a w orthwhile one, and it makes education more relevant to life and by making the learningmore dynamic.
