2. Intro Information
• There are two parts to learning: questioning
and challenging.
– critical educator: Individual who teaches for social
justice.
Freedom in the classroom is necessary for student
success.
- pop quizzing restricts freedom to learn
To increase student learning make the material
meaningful and interesting.
3. Discourse!!!
• Discourse: Conversation
- Conversation in the classroom allows all
students to participate and engage in the
lesson.
- Critical thinking skills are enhanced through
conversation.
- Discourse brings out the conversation of
academic writing such as text books.
4. Discourse Continued….
• New teachers tend to instruct their lessons
“by the book” by using the textbook as the
one source of knowledge in their field
– Lessons should be based around the discussion of
material instead of just lecturing about material.
5. Modernist Project
• Behavior psychology: A scientific aspect of
learning that shows behavior is controlled.
• Teachers are the ones who train students to
learn new things and preform certain
outcomes.
- This allows for more of a structured
classroom setting.
6. Modernist Project
• Binet and Simon introduced intelligence
testing.
• Intelligence: Construct that involves logical
thinking and linguistic ability.
• Intelligence is not good to measure due to the
fact it does not take their economic
background into account.
– Towns with more funds have better resources,
textbooks etc….
