Characteristics of active learning
method
Bonwell And Eison –Five Charateristics,
Students are involved in class beyond listening.
Less emphasis is placed on transmitting information
and more emphasis is placed on developing the skills
of the students.
The students are involved in higher order thinking
such as analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluation.
The students are involved in activities like
reading,discussion and writing.
Greater emphasis is placed on the exploration of
student values and attitudes.
• Active learning method can also overcome the
individualistic and compatitive nature of
education.
• (Wrote Johnson, Johnson and Smith 1991)-
when engaged in cooperative activities,
individual seek outcomes that are beneficial to
themselves and to all other members of the
group.
• Cooperative learning is the instructional use of
small groups so that students work together to
maximize their own and each others learning.
How to incorporate Active Learning into
classroom
• Think –pair-share: It is a simple activity you can
use in classroom. Give students time to think about a
topic, time, their neighbour for a short discussion, and
then share the rest of the class.
• Minute papers: provide students with the
opportunities to synthesize their knowledge and to
ask unanswered questions .
• Give students a few minutes at the end of the class
to answer following questions in writing: What was
the most important you learned today? What
important questions remain unanswered?
• Variations of these questions and the questions and
answers they generate, enhance your students
learning process and provide you with feedback on
students understanding of the subject material.
Writing activities: provide opportunity to think and
process information
 Ex. Inaddition minute papers, pose questions and
students free write their answers.
Brainstorming :
Whole class in a discussion
Introduce a topic or problem and ask for
student input, which you record on the board.
Games:
 Incorporated into classroom to foster active
learning and participation.
Matching, mysteries, group discussion and
solving puzzeles.
Debates
Effective tool for students to think
about several ideas of an issue.
Group work
 Allows every participant the chance to speak
personal views.
Cooperative group work
break the class into five group.
Give each group articles to read, questions
and answer and discuss, information to share.
Case studies:
Use real life stories that describes what
happens in a community, family, school, or
individual .
Promote students to integrate their classroom
knowledge with their knowledge, world
situations, actions and consequences.
Merits of active learning methodology:
Students are involved in more than listening
Greater emphasis on students skill
Students are involved in activities.
Student have the opportunity to remember
upto 50% of the content of each session.
